One year removed from winning this race with his GISW Mandaloun (Into Mischief) before taking the GI TVG.com Haskell S., Brad Cox returned to the Jersey Shore with Home Brew. Minus one bad run when he caught a sloppy track for Oaklawn's Smarty Jones S. Jan. 1, the son of Street Sense boasted a nearly unblemished record, with his only other loss a second Nov. 14 in his first start for Cox at Churchill Downs. After a three-month absence following the Smarty Jones, Home Brew returned to take the Apr. 23 Oaklawn S. and post a career-high 84 Beyer Speed Figure. The 3-2 second choice for Saturday's contest, Home Brew saved ground along the inside in third as Cyberviking led the field through an opening quarter in :23.70. Maneuvered out around the far turn, he rallied three wide at the quarter-pole and inhaled the early leaders, pulling away in the final sixteenth to win by an easy 6 1/4 lengths.

“He's not a real big horse and I think we've just kind of taken our time with him and let him mature and I think that has helped a lot,” said assistant trainer Blake Cox. As for whether or not Home Brew could contest the July 23 Haskell along with stablemate Cyberknife (Gun Runner), Cox said: “I'm not sure about that. We have to see where we are. We've had good luck in the Haskell so we'll see.”

Home Brew has a 2-year-old full-brother named Day Trade who is his dam's last reported foal.

On the day Coolmore America sire Munnings got a new 'TDN Rising Star' in Dubai with Shahama, he also added a new stakes winner on the Derby trail with Dash Attack in Oaklawn's Smarty Jones S. Earning 10 points on the 'Road to the Kentucky Derby' in this one-mile event, Dash Attack broke from the rail, took a little hop out of the gate, and settled midpack behind fractions of :23.03 and :46.38. The chestnut edged closer in earnest on the turn, but was still saving ground in eighth as six panels were clocked in 1:12.34. Tipped out about six wide coming off the turn to find running room, he flew down the lane with his ears pricked to win with authority.

“I'm just really pleased with the job [rider] David [Cohen] and my team did over there,” said winning trainer Kenny McPeek from Florida. “Just an impressive run by that colt. Look, he's still just figuring it out, this horse. I knew he would come from off the pace. I saw that he got off a little awkward. I just didn't want David to rush things and it looked to me like he started to, but then as the race unfolded, he kind of ended up in a pocket for a while. But good horses overcome things and he's done that, for sure.”

Dash Attack had made one previous start, a Dec. 5 victory over track and trip that resulted in a 74 debut Beyer Speed Figure. McPeek's family is part of both the ownership group and the breeding partnership that resulted in the Smarty Jones winner. With his wide blaze, chestnut coat, and consecutive trips to the winner's circle, Dash Attack calls to mind another sophomore colt by Munnings, GI Champagne S. winner and 'TDN Rising Star' Jack Christopher, who was scratched the day prior to the GI TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile as the likely favorite due to a stress fracture.

Dam Cerce Cay is a half to MSW & MGSP Song of Navarone (Sultry Song). She has a freshly minted 2-year-old colt by Noble Mission (GB) and a yearling full-sister to the winner.

Caddo River (Hard Spun) made good on his 'TDN Rising Star'-worthy graduation at third asking with a facile first stakes score in Oaklawn's Smarty Jones S., good for 10 points on the Road to the GI Kentucky Derby.

Away well from his outside post, the 3-5 chalk seized the early advantage and clocked an unpressured opening quarter in :23.12 and a half in :47.16. Extending clear with ease on the backstretch run, the bay rolled home the easiest of winners under a hand ride from Florent Geroux.

Caddo River was second in his first two attempts at seven furlongs, debuting at Saratoga Sept. 5 and next out at Belmont Oct. 11. He took the field from gate to wire next out in a powerhouse performance going a mile at Churchill Nov. 15, romping by 9 1/2 lengths, defeating future Dania Beach S. winner Kentucky Pharoah (American Pharoah), among others.

“He broke very alertly,” Geroux said. “Very nice and relaxed. You want to see these type horses doing it the right way. It's easy to go to the lead and keep on going. You want them to relax and do everything right. He did everything perfect. The distance doesn't look like it's going to be a problem. Very excited about what's coming up ahead of us with him. Looks like he can run all day, which is a good problem. Hopefully, we can go on, go up the stepping stones and have a nice horse for the first Saturday in May.”

The victor, named for a river in Arkansas, has a 2-year-old half-sister by Into Mischief named Como Square and his thrice graded stakes-placed dam produced a Nyquist colt in 2020 before being bred back to Hard Spun. Second dam It's True Love was a SW as well and is responsible for recent GIII Allaire DuPont S. winner Eres Tu (Malibu Moon).

‘TDN Rising Star‘ Caddo River (Hard Spun), who broke his maiden by 9 1/2 lengths over Churchill’s one-turn mile Nov. 15, is being pointed for a sophomore debut in the $150,000 Smarty Jones S. at Oaklawn Park Jan. 22.

Bred and raced by John Ed Anthony’s Shortleaf Stable and trained by Brad Cox, the son of Pangburn (Congrats) made his first two career starts going seven furlongs on the New York circuit, finishing a debut second at Saratoga Sept. 5 before filling the same spot at Belmont Park Nov. 11. He made all the running last time, stopping the clock in a very strong 1:35.22.

Cox believes the best is yet to come.

“He’s a very good colt,” Cox told the Oaklawn notes team. “He ran against two really good colts in New York. He was able to break his maiden, one turn at Churchill. He’s big, tall, rangy, leggy colt. I really do think that he’s going to be better around two turns. He’s got what I think it takes to be a serious horse. He’s got speed and he can carry it.”

Since shipping in from Kentucky, Caddo River has logged a pair of breezes over the Oaklawn main track, including a half-mile drill that was timed in :48 flat (3/87) Jan. 3.
