There was little sign when Shale was sixth on debut behind Oodnadatta in a seven-furlong Leopardstown maiden June 21 that she would hit these heights, but that has turned out to be a smart contest from which the subsequent G3 Marble Hill S. winner Minaun (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) sprang, among others. Off the mark over a mile on testing ground next time at Gowran Park July 8, the daughter of the emphatic G1 1000 Guineas heroine Homecoming Queen (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) may have been in part benefitting from a front-runner’s bias back at Leopardstown as she held Pretty Gorgeous at bay in the Silver Flash reverting to this trip. When she was put in her place so readily in the Debutante last time, that looked to be the deciding blow in the contest but Shale’s doughtiness ultimately told in this championship bout.

“The ground was a little bit more in our favour today,” Donnacha added. “She’s a very low mover, so you would think she wants quick ground but her mother was the same and when they are very clear-winded and tough they tend to go on most conditions. I definitely thought she’d be closer today, but I wasn’t going to say that I thought she’d go and win as we don’t look under the bonnet at home. She has a few options–it could be the [G1 Prix] Marcel Boussac or Newmarket [for the G1 Fillies’ Mile] and after that she could go to America for the Breeders’ Cup. She’ll be even better when she goes back up in trip.” Pretty Gorgeous’s rider Declan McDonogh said, “It was a bit messy early, but I headed the winner and she then got a bit tired. I’ve no excuses–she ran a blinder.”

Homecoming Queen, who took the 2012 renewal of the Newmarket mile Classic by nine lengths, is another of the Coolmore broodmares locked on to Galileo and she now has three black-type performers including the stakes-placed First of Spring (Ire) and the G2 Futurity S. third Berkeley Square (Ire). Her dam Lagrion (Diesis {GB}) produced the mighty Arc hero Dylan Thomas (Ire), the juvenile champion Queen’s Logic (Ire) (Grand Lodge) and the G1 Epsom Oaks second Remember When (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) whose son Serpentine (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is this year’s G1 Epsom Derby hero. His G2 Kilboy Estate S.-winning full-sister Wedding Vow (Ire) was also runner-up in the G1 Nassau S., while Queen’s Logic produced the G2 Diadem S. and G2 Lowther S. winner and G1 Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp and G1 Haydock Sprint Cup runner-up Lady of the Desert (Rahy). Homecoming Queen’s 2019 Galileo is a colt.

Aidan’s other contender Snowfall (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) was fourth behind Donnacha’s Shale (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Joseph’s TDN Rising Star Pretty Gorgeous (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}) in the G3 Silver Flash S. over this seven-furlong trip at Leopardstown Aug. 6 and that form could be key. One notable withdrawal from the Silver Flash was Jim Bolger’s 11-length July 28 Galway maiden scorer Meala (Ire) (Epaulette {Aus) and she will pose fierce opposition to the O’Briens if in the same heart.

One domestic pattern race that Aidan does not hold the record in is the Futurity, where the late great Dr Vincent O’Brien still holds sway with his 16 renewals. Just three behind at this stage, the current master of Ballydoyle has won six of the last seven and the last four and it is significant that Heffernan sticks with the maiden Van Gogh (American Pharoah) who was a neck second to the stable’s Military Style (War Front) in Leopardstown’s G3 Tyros S. over this seven-furlong trip Aug. 6. Whether Van Gogh is another Giant’s Causeway, Hawk Wing, Gleneagles (Ire) or Churchill (Ire) remains to be seen, but as a son of the Triple Crown hero and the operation’s 2001 G1 Epsom Oaks and G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Imagine (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells) he is a truly special commodity.

Missing from the Tyros as Leopardstown’s ground firmed up was Alpha Racing 2020’s Cadillac (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), who had impressed when winning by nine lengths on debut over that course and distance July 1. This easy surface will suit ideally and Jessie Harrington could be celebrating another major win with a son of the sire after the G1 Phoenix S. success of Lucky Vega (Ire) earlier this month. “He’s in great form, he’s doing very well,” Harrington said. “The only reason I didn’t run him at Leopardstown was because the ground was very quick that day. I took him out then, but he has been in great form since and we’re hoping for a big run from him.”

Other important 2-year-old action takes place at Deauville, with the G2 Shadwell Prix du Calvados featuring two significant overseas raiders in the July 21 Listed Star S. winner Fev Rover (Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}) and the O’Callaghans’ impressive July 7 Roscommon maiden scorer No Speak Alexander (Ire) (Shalaa {Ire}) with the stranded Frankie booked for the ride on the latter. He also partners the July 5 G2 Oaks d’Italia heroine Auyantepui (GB) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) in the G2 Shadwell Prix de la Nonette, but she should at best be playing second-fiddle to the sponsors’ five-length June 14 G1 Prix Saint Alary winner Tawkeel (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) in that 10-furlong contest.

At York, the G2 Sky Bet City of York S. sees Lael Stable’s dual G1 Prix de la Foret heroine One Master (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) look to build on her latest success over this seven-furlong trip in the G3 Oak Tree S. at Goodwood July 31. She should be a tough nut to crack with conditions ideal, but Roger Varian could have thrown a spanner in the works by dropping San Donato (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) back in trip following his eyecatching effort when sixth in the G1 Sussex S. also at Goodwood July 29.

“She’s a lovely filly and I’m very grateful that connections let me keep the ride,” commented Ryan, the Co. Tipperary-born five-pound claimer. “She had won her maiden nicely on slow ground and our only worry was the quicker ground today, but she’s a very versatile filly with a lot of class. She travelled into the race well and stayed on gamely. Donnacha said to make sure we were up and forward, as she has a wicked high cruising speed and she’s probably a miler ideally. I think that was a good race and I know Joseph thinks his is a classy filly.”

Shale, who was sixth on debut in the course-and-distance maiden in which the subsequent G3 Marble Hill S. winner Minaun (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) was second June 21, had taken her Gowran maiden by 3 1/4 lengths last time and is a filly with limitless potential given her outstanding pedigree. Donnacha was on hand to say, “She had improved plenty from her maiden and her work was good–the race worked out nicely, as they went a good gallop and she got a nice tow into it. To look at her, you would say she wants quick ground so I was a bit surprised how well she handled it the last day. Joseph likes his filly a lot and obviously it’s quick enough out there and not easy to make up ground, So I’d say they are two smart fillies. We’ll look at the [G2] Debutante and the [G1] Moyglare. It would be the obvious path with those two-year-old fillies.”

In the pre-Serpentine era, Homecoming Queen was one of the first examples of what her trainer could do with slow learners as she took eight starts to break her maiden before going to Newmarket and winning the 2012 renewal of the mile Classic by nine lengths. Bred solely to Galileo, Shale is her third black-type performer and her best after the stakes-placed First of Spring (Ire) and G2 Futurity S. third Berkeley Square (Ire). She is a daughter of Lagrion (Diesis {GB}), which makes her a half-sister to the former Ballydoyle great Dylan Thomas (Ire), the juvenile champion Queen’s Logic (Ire) (Grand Lodge) and Remember When (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) who was promoted to second in the 2010 G1 Epsom Oaks.

Remember When has produced five black-type winners all by Galileo headed by the aforementioned G1 Epsom Derby hero Serpentine (Ire) and Wedding Vow (Ire) who captured the G2 Kilboy Estate S. and was runner-up in the G1 Nassau S. Queen’s Logic, whose unbeaten career was cut short by injury, has produced the G2 Diadem S. and G2 Lowther S. winner and G1 Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp and G1 Haydock Sprint Cup runner-up Lady of the Desert (Rahy) who is in turn the dam of Queen Kindly (GB) (Frankel {GB}) who also took the Lowther.
