Arqana's inaugural September Yearling Sale, a replacement for the v.2 Yearling Sale, started its two-day run on Thursday, and a smart colt by the former French-based stallion Toronado (Ire) brought a session-topping bid of €120,000 from Mathieu Alex on behalf of Pauline Chehboub's SAS Yellow Agency.

Part of the Fairway Consignment draft and already named Tomokay (Fr), lot 34 is the fifth foal from his dam, the winning Hold That Tiger mare Loumaxaye (Fr). His half-brother Hayejohn (Fr), by first-season sire Johnny Barnes (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), carried all before him in the Listed Prix des Jouvenceaux et des Jouvencelles at Vichy after the catalogue was published.

This is also the extended family of the dual listed winner Sully (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) and G1 Futurity S., G1 Queen Elizabeth S. and G1 Caulfield Cup S. heroine Aqua d'Amore (Aus) (Danehill).

Second on the buyers' sheets was lot 82, Tiger King (Fr) (Inns Of Court {Ire}). Originally a €9,500 in utero purchase by Jean-Claud Olivier out of the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale in 2020, the colt was re-sold one year later in that same sale for €19,000 to Six of Us. Offered by Haras de Grandcamp on Thursday, the February-foaled colt was snapped up for €85,000 by John Hassett of The Bloodstock Connection for GET IN THE GAME. Out of the listed-placed Pink Cloud (Fr) (Octagonal {NZ}), his dam is a half-sister to two-time listed winner Pink Gin (Fr) (Kouroun {Fr}), as well as the stakes-placed Pink Anabella (Fr) (Anabaa).

John Hassett said, “He's a magnificent colt, that comes from a good stud. I'm very pleased with this purchase. It's possible that he might come back to Deauville for the Breeze Up next May, but nothing is decided yet.”

Hassett had struck for a colt by Shalaa (Ire) earlier in the day, when shelling out €68,000 for lot 71 as JCH Bloodstock. Haras de Castillon consigned the bay, whose dam is a half-sister to none other than outstanding third-crop sire and dual Group 2 winner Mehmas (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), who was also runner up in the G1 National S. and third in the G1 Middle Park S.

John Hammond bought four on the day for owner Gerard Augustin-Normand ranging in price from €5,000 to €80,000. Leading the quartet was a colt by City Light (Fr) (lot 101) from the draft of Haras d'Aspel. His dam is a half-sister to the stakes winner and stakes producer Rioticism (Fr) (Rio de la Plata), responsible for three-time stakes winner and G3 Round Tower S. third Ladies Church (GB) (Churchill {Ire}), while his half-brother by Birchwood graduated at Deauville this summer for Joel Boisnard. This colt will also join the Boisnard string.

Thursday's most expensive filly was a daughter of Ten Sovereigns (Ire) (lot 47). Purchased for €77,000 by Hammond from Haras de la Haie Neuve, the well-bred miss is from the same family as Group 1 winner Sequoyah (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), the dam of dual Classic winner Henrythenavigator (Kingmambo), and the Classic-placed Group 3 winner Queen Cleopatra (Ire) (Kingmambo); while Sequoyah's half-sister Listen (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) took the G1 Fillies' Mile and was runner-up in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. Carrying this filly, her dam brought €55,000 from Narvick International at the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale in 2020.

“She's a lovely filly, that is very like her sire,” said Hammond. “I really like her physique and she has a lot of strength. We'll decide on her future at a later date.”

At the end of the day, 101 yearlings (71.6%) had sold from 141 offered. The gross was a respectable €2,113,000. The average was €20,921 and the median settled at €15,000.

The sale continues Friday at 2 p.m.

Bred by Noel O'Callaghan's Mountarmstrong Stud, the €190,000 Goffs Orby RNA yearling raced for Charles, Noel and Paul O'Callaghan. She won at second asking at Roscommon last July and ran fourth in the G2 Prix du Calvados in August of 2020 before taking second in a listed race at Leopardstown that September. The bay ended her juvenile season with another fourth, this time in the G3 Weld Park S.

No Speak Alexander kicked off this season with a win in the G3 Athasi S. at The Curragh in May before running third in the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas. Unplaced in the G1 Prix Rothschild, she ecked out a neck victory in the G1 Matron S. at Leopardstown on Sept. 11 and ended her career with a sixth in the G1 Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot S. at Newmarket on Oct. 2. The daughter of listed winner Rapacity Alexander retires with a mark of 10-3-1-1 and $347,921 in earnings.

“No Speak Alexander headed off to her retirement yesterday,” Harrington tweeted. “She won three of 10 including [the] G1 Coolmore Matron S. at Leopardstown on Irish Champions Weekend and also [was] a brilliant third in the G1 Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas. Best of luck for the future, we look forward to your progeny.”

Her dam is a full-sister to Hong Kong champion Peniaphobia (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}), as well as a half to the GI Molecomb S. third Safari Sunset (Ire) (Fayruz {GB}).

13.00 Ayr, Nov, £14,000, 2yo, 7f 50yT
Jaber Abdullah's 120,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling MARHABA THE CHAMP (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) is a son of MGSW G1 Cheveley Park S., G1 Haydock Sprint Cup and G1 Prix de l'Abbaye placegetter Lady of the Desert (Rahy). The Kevin Ryan trainee is confronted by a baker's dozen in this debut.

13.45 Newbury, Cond, £16,500, 2yo, f, 7fT
Godolphin's SILK ROMANCE (IRE) (Shamardal), a daughter of G1 Fillies' Mile heroine Lyric of Light (GB) (Street Cry {Ire}), attained 'TDN Rising Star' status when posting an impressive 5 1/2-length tally over this trip in an Aug. 27 Newmarket novice heat last time and faces three prior winners in this four-runner heat. They are G2 Prix du Calvados fifth Fast Attack (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), G3 Solario S. sixth Star From Afarhh (GB) (Farhh {GB}) and Windsor novice scorer Heredia (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}).

14.03 Chantilly, Cond, €34,000, 2yo, 8fT
Juddmonte's once-raced RACLETTE (GB) (Frankel {GB}) snagged a 'TDN Rising Star' badge when impressing over 7 1/2 furlongs in a winner-producing debutantes' contest at Deauville last month. The Andre Fabre-trained daughter of MGISW distaffer Emollient (Empire Maker) encounters Al Shaqab Racing's Deauville debut scorer Welwal (GB) (Shalaa {Ire}), a half-brother to G3 Prix de la Grotte third Epistrophy (Fr) (Charm Spirit {Ire}), who was stylish when annexing the winner-producing colts' equivalent heat for the Jean-Claude Rouget stable on the same Aug. 8 card.

14.55 Newbury, Cond, £18,000, 2yo, c/g, 8fT
Godolphin's 900,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 acquisition KING OF CONQUEST (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) annexed an Aug. 22 seven-furlong maiden at Sandown on debut and returns in this renowned Haynes, Hanson & Clark conditions test won last year by subsequent MGSW G2 Great Voltigeur S. victor Yibir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). Five-strong opposition includes Juddmonte's once-raced Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who comes back off an Aug. 5 debut win over this distance at Sandown and is a Ralph Beckett-trained son of G1 Prix de la Foret third Mirabilis (Lear Fan).

Jessica Harrington trainee No Speak Alexander (Ire) (Shalaa {Ire}) came back off a break to finish 10th behind the reopposing G1 1000 Guineas heroine Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) in last month's G1 Prix Rothschild at Deauville and stepped forward to shock a stellar field in Saturday's G1 Coolmore America 'Justify' Matron S. at Leopardstown. She had previously backed up a solid five-race juvenile campaign to snag The Curragh's May 3 Athasi S. on seasonal return and hit the board back there in the May 23 G1 Irish 1000 Guineas in her penultimate start. The 25-1 outsider was positioned along the rail in a forward third after the initial exchanges of the one-mile test. Scrubbed along at the top of the straight, she was ridden to the fore entering the final furlong and kept on in resolute fashion to hold the persistent threat of Pearls Galore (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) by a neck for a career high. Coolmore's G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Prix Rothschild heroine Mother Earth endured a nightmare passage in the straight and was allowed to coast home in the closing stages to finish 1 1/4 lengths back in third.

“I was worried because I could see a bit of interference, but we ended up keeping the race and, to me, that's the main thing,” commented Jessica Harrington. “After the Irish [1000] Guineas, we wanted to go the Group 1 route and we thought we'd go to [Royal] Ascot [for the G1 Coronation S.], but that didn't happen. We then thought we'd go for the [G1] Falmouth S. [at Newmarket] and that didn't happen. We took her to France, but she got very badly interfered with a furlong down and that was a no race for her. We ended up coming here and, thank goodness, we got the result. She's now a Group 1 winner, which is absolutely fantastic. She's a beautifully bred filly, it's lovely for all the O'Callaghans and she'll be a big asset to their stud. Her best form is with a bit of cut, but it's beautiful ground out there with a lovely covering of grass. It's totally fair ground for anyone and, if she can win on it, any horse can win on it.”

No Speak Alexander, who becomes the first top-level winner for her second-crop sire (by Invincible Spirit), is the first foal out of Listed Prix La Fleche victrix Rapacity Alexander (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}), herself a full-sister to G1 Hong Kong Sprint victor Peniaphobia (Ire). The April-foaled bay is a half to the twice-placed 2-year-old filly Making Music (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}). No Speak Alexander's fourth dam Quiet Harbour (Ire) (Mill Reef) is the dam of Listed Prix Right Royal victrix and stakes producer Cutting Reef (Ire) (Kris {GB}), the stakes-winning Jazz Ballet (Ire) (Jaazeiro) and G3 Premio Ambrosiano placegetter Guest Harbour (Ire) (Be My Guest). Guest Harbour, herself the dam of G1 Gran Premio di Milano hero Benvenue (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}), is kin to five stakes winners headed by G1 Coronation Cup hero Quiet Fling (Nijinsky), whose full-sister De Stael produced four black-type winners headed by MGISW GI Matriarch S. heroine Wandesta (GB) (Nashwan).

BLUEGRASS (IRE) (Galileo {Ire}) is the first foal out of the G1 Commonwealth Cup and G1 Haydock Sprint Cup heroine Quiet Reflection (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) to race for Coolmore, who paid 2.1million gns for her at the 2017 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. Representing the Smith/Magnier/Tabor/Westerberg partnership, the January-foaled colt debuts in the maiden in which Thunder Moon (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) sprung to TDN Rising Stardom 12 months ago.

1.55 Curragh, Cond, €28,000, 2yo, f, 7fT
HISTORY (IRE) (Galileo {Ire}) is one of two Ballydoyle runners in this Loder Irish EBF Fillies' Race and the one to make her debut, with Ryan Moore understandably opting for her winning stablemate Concert Hall (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), the daughter of Was (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). History was the second highest-priced lot at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 at 2.8million gns, due to the fact that she is the first foal out of the multiple graded-stakes winner Prize Exhibit (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) who is a full-sister to the high-class G1 Sussex S. hero Mohaather (GB).

1.58 Deauville, Debutantes, €27,000, 2yo, c/g, 7 1/2fT
DREAMFLIGHT (GB) (Frankel {GB}) is a significant Andre Fabre newcomer at Deauville August which is always such a breeding ground for future luminaries, being a son of the G2 Prix de la Nonette winner and dual GI Diana S. runner-up Dream Peace (Ire) (Dansili {GB}). Bought by Lady Bamford for 2.7million gns at the 2013 Tattersalls December Mares Sale, she has yet to produce a genuine star but her 3-year-old Guru (GB) (Kingman {GB}) has shown talent and there is time.

2.33 Deauville, Debutantes, €27,000, 2yo, f, 7 1/2fT
RACLETTE (GB) (Frankel {GB}) is a second Fabre project by the Juddmonte great, this time carrying the same silks as a daughter of the four-times Grade I heroine Emollient (Empire Maker). Among her peers is 3s Race Horse Management's Fall in Love (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), a Hiroo Shimizu-trained half-sister to last year's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Aunt Pearl (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) who at €450,000 was the top-priced filly sold at the Arqana Deauville October Yearling Sale. Jean-Claude Rouget saddles two Al Shaqab representatives headed by Taihah (Ire) (Shalaa {Ire}), a daughter of the G1 Coronation S. and G1 Prix Rothschild heroine Qemah (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), while Situveux (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) is a Wertheimer homebred trained by Carlos Laffon-Parias who combined with her half-brother, the Yeomanstown Stud resident Shaman (Ire) (Shamardal).
