Forestry (Storm Cat–Shared Interest, by Pleasant Colony), winner of the 1999 GI King's Bishop S. at Saratoga and sire of GI Preakness S. winner Shackleford and fellow GISWs Discreet Cat, Forest Danger and Diplomat Lady, passed away at the age of 27 in Paraná, Brazil on Wednesday.

One of the longest-lived and most successful sires in all of South America, Forestry died due to health problems caused by old age, according to Dr. Joaquim Antunes, chief veterinarian of Haras São José da Serra.

Bred by Robert S. Evans in Kentucky, Forestry was purchased by Aaron U. and Marie D. Jones for $1.5 million as a yearling at the Keeneland July sale.

He entered stud in 2000 at Taylor Made in Kentucky. In 2014, Forestry was acquired by a group of Brazilian breeders and resided at Haras São José da Serra. He produced 18 black-type winners in Brazil, including the Grade 1 winners Oceano Azul, Itaperuna, Gata Y Flor, and Hembra.

Stilleto Boy (Shackleford), so often a major player in graded races but seldom a winner, finally got the big one, winning the GI Santa Anita H. Saturday at the Great Race Place. He was third in last year's Big 'Cap, had filled out the trifecta in both the 2022 and 2023 GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational S., and had placed in another two Grade I races. Saturday was his day to shine, as he wore down pacesetting favorite and GISW Defunded (Dialed In)–whom he finished one slot behind in the Pegasus–and held off GISW Proxy (Tapit) to post a 13-1 upset.

Hall of Fame rider Kent Desormeaux was aboard the winner, giving him his first win in the race since 2002, when he won with Milwaukee Brew (Wild Again). He also scored in 1992 with Best Pal (Habitony {Ire}). Juan Hernandez–on third-place finisher Defunded–wasn't even born when Desormeaux won his first Santa Anita H.

At the break, Stilleto Boy flashed his speed to take the lead, but promptly surrendered to a determined Defunded before the :23.34 first quarter. Stablemates Defunded and Hopper (Declaration of War) slugged it out up top through a :46.16 half while the blaze-faced winner patiently kept to the inside behind the top two. Although shuffled back a bit between horses as the six furlongs unfolded in 1:10.72, Stilleto Boy was moving well and was clearly still aiming to factor at the mile marker. The 5-year-old gelding swung wide and kept grinding down the lane, steadily making progress on the frontrunners as Desormeaux kept busy. A final surge propelled Stilleto Boy to the wire just in time with Proxy missing by a mere neck and Defunded just another half-length in arrears. The final time was 2:01.96.

“I've been telling everyone that he is the best horse in racing,” said winning trainer Ed Moger, Jr. “I really think he is the best horse, the race in the Pegasus was a really strong race and we had him go out of the 11 hole that day. Defunded barely beat us that day, so I knew we could beat him because we had beaten him before; I thought he was the horse to beat. I thought [my horse] could win, and he's been training great.”

Acquired for $420,000 at the Fasig-Tipton July Selected Horses of Racing Age sale in 2021 off a win in the Iowa Derby while under the tutelage of Doug Anderson, the chestnut has run exclusively in stakes company since his purchase by the Moger brothers. Steve owns; Ed trains. Stilleto Boy has given them only two wins since then, but they've been substantial. In addition to Saturday's Big 'Cap, he also won the GII Californian S. last April with a 108 Beyer Speed Figure. He's placed in another seven graded races for the Mogers and more than repaid his sales price, earning nearly $1.5 million since his purchase.

Pedigree Notes:

Stilleto Boy is one of eight graded winners for the charismatic 2011 GI Preakness S. winner Shackleford, who also is the sire of 23 black-type winners. A flashy chestnut like his son, Shackleford first stood at Darby Dan Farm in Central Kentucky before being sold just before the 2020 breeding season to continue his career in South Korea. Interestingly, Shackleford's two Grade I winners–Stilleto Boy and Promises Fulfilled–are both out of Marquetry mares. Marquetry, another flashy chestnut with plenty of chrome, died at age 26 in 2013 after being pensioned to Old Friends. Marquetry has 50 stakes winners out of his daughters.

Dam Rosie's Ransom, whose last reported foal is the now-juvenile colt Irish Ransom (Gormley), has produced three stakes performers, but Stilleto Boy is heads and shoulders above the rest. He is the first-ever graded winner produced in his immediate female family, although a very distant relation is 1972 champion older mare Typecast (Prince John).

Sekie and Tsunebumi Yoshihara's Yuugiri (Shackleford) looked in all sorts of bother as she was besieged from either side with time ticking away in Saturday's GIII Fantasy S. at Oaklawn Park, but she refused to lay down and battled her way to a neck defeat of Beguine (Gun Runner). Second choice Bubble Rock (More Than Ready) was third in her first try on a conventional dirt surface.

Quickly into stride from gate six, Yuugiri won the race into the first turn and set the pace from the two path, with Bubble Rock chasing from second and Beguine monitoring proceedings from the box seat in third. That trio would have the race to themselves, as it would happen. Yuugiri did it well on the engine and went along comfortably, sharp though the fractions were. On a long rein with Bubble Rock stalking her wherever she went and Beguine still traveling strongly, Yuugiri was shaken up 2 1/2 furlongs from home, but appeared to be going better than Bubble Rock to her outside. In the meantime, Beguine emerged as the more serious danger at the fence and was within a head as they entered the final eighth of a mile. But the pacesetter maintained a slender advantage as the duo came together late and proved a most determined winner. Stewards launched an inquiry into the final stages, but ultimately allowed the result to stand.

“That was really not the initial plan (go to the lead), but she broke so sharp,” said winning trainer Rodolphe Brisset. “[Jockey Florent Geroux] did good to just go with the flow. The fractions were pretty fast. It's very demanding to go to the wire, going :46 and change, and she did it. It's a fun one.”

A romping 7 1/4-length debut maiden winner at Churchill Downs Sept. 17, Yuugiri was a distant runner-up in the Oct. 31 Rags To Riches S. and filled the same spot when beaten a length by Fantasy favorite Dream Lith (Medaglia d'Oro) in the GII Golden Rod S. Nov. 27. She raced prominently in the GIII Honeybee S. in her sophomore debut Feb. 26 but weakened late to be third behind leading local lady Secret Oath (Arrogate) in an effort she was likely to be in need of and sure to come on for.

Pedigree Notes:

Yuugiri is the 19th stakes winner and seventh winner at the graded level for GI Preakness S. winner Shackleford, who was sold to Korean interests to continue his stallion career in that country in 2020.

The winner's dam was campaigned by Sekie and Tsunebumi Yoshihara to a victory for trainer Michael Matz in the grassy Forever Together S. and Yuugiri is her only winner from two of racing age. Yuzuru is a half-sister to the Winchester Farm-bred Nokaze (Empire Maker), the dam of Japanese Group 2 winner Air Almas (Majestic Warrior), Japanese stakes winner Air Fanditha (Hat Trick {Jpn}) and the promising Air Sage (Point of Entry), winner of three of six starts on the demanding JRA circuit. The Yoshiharas campaign those horses in Japan under the banner of Lucky Field, the literal translation of Yoshihara. Lucky Field has also raced 1997 Tenno Sho hero Air Groove (Jpn) (Tony Bin {Ire}) and MGSW/MG1SP Air Spinel (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}).

Yuzuru is the dam of a 2-year-old colt by Air Force Blue that has already been exported to Japan as well as a yearling colt by Nyquist. She was most recently bred to American Pharoah.

With the end of the Keeneland September yearling sale clearly in view for Friday, readers and buyers can pause to reflect on sales past and the classic season from 10 years ago when all three Triple Crown winners walked the path of the Keeneland pagoda through the September sale of 2009.

Yes, each of the 2011 Triple Crown races – the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes – went to a different September sale yearling, and all of them were chestnuts too.

The sales season of 2009, however, was not the bustling and booming market we have seen at Keeneland, and elsewhere, this year. Instead, 2009 was the first yearling sale season fully impacted by the global economic crisis and Great Recession that began in 2008.

As a direct result, prices for some of the better yearlings were lower than expected, but two of our subject horses – Animal Kingdom and Ruler On Ice – brought $100,000 when put through the Keeneland auction. And the third, Shackleford, brought the highest hammer price of the trio at $275,000 but was bought back by breeders Mike Lauffer and Bill Cubbedge.

A big, rangy chestnut with a “turf” pedigree, Animal Kingdom (by 2005 turf champion Leroidesanimaux) was bred by a Team Valor partnership and was consigned by Denali Stud. The buyer was another Barry Irwin partnership under the banner of Team Valor International. The colt's results were surely the best for any Team Valor partnership because Animal Kingdom was a truly world-class racer at 10 furlongs, and he won the Kentucky Derby at three and the Dubai World Cup at five.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=3 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=4 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

In contrast to those who previously had perceived the colt as a turf horse, the Derby is raced on dirt, and the World Cup was on the synthetic track at Meydan in 2013.

In between those two victories, Animal Kingdom had suffered a cracked hind cannon in the Belmont Stakes, was laid off for the rest of his 3-year-old season, and had a recurrence of a bone crack after his 4-year-old season debut. Then, Animal Kingdom showed what a truly versatile animal can do.

After more than six months away from racing, the big chestnut returned to Grade 1 competition in the 2012 Breeders' Cup Mile on turf at Santa Anita. Sent off a little-considered 10-1, Animal Kingdom rallied like a champion and finished second to turf champion Wise Dan.

Following the World Cup victory in 2013, Animal Kingdom was retired at the midpoint of his 5-year-old season to enter stud in Australia, having earned $8.3 million. He retired to stud at Arrowfield in Australia and shuttled to Darley at Jonabell in Kentucky. In October 2019, Animal Kingdom was sold to the Japan Bloodstock Breeders' Association and now stands in Japan.

At the same 2012 Breeders' Cup, Shackleford (Forestry) raced in the G1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, where he finished seventh. The previous year, Shackleford had been second in the Dirt Mile, and earlier in 2012, the prancing chestnut had won the Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park.

The flashy grandson of Storm Cat had personality plus, making him a favorite with fans, and he had denied Animal Kingdom's closing rush in the 2011 Preakness to prevail by a half-length. Amazingly enough, the Preakness was the first stakes victory for Shackleford, although he had been second in the G1 Florida Derby earlier in the year.

After the Preakness, Shackleford finished second in the G1 Haskell, likewise the BC Dirt Mile, then won the Metropolitan at four and ended his career with victory in the G1 Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs in 2012.

A winner of $3 million, Shackelford retired to stud in Kentucky at Darby Dan Farm in 2013 and, in 2020, was sold to the Korean Racing Authority to stand at stud in South Korea.

Just as Shackleford had done in the Preakness, Ruler On Ice (by the Fusaichi Pegasus stallion Roman Ruler) won his first stakes in the classic Belmont Stakes. Amazingly enough, it proved the only stakes the gelding ever won.

Bred in Kentucky like the two other winners of the 2011 Triple Crown races, Ruler On Ice was bred by Liberation Farm and Brandywine Farm, then sold at the September sale to George and Lori Hall.

Stakes-placed coming into the Belmont against the winners of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, Ruler On Ice was a genuine longshot to win the Belmont, and only two of the 12 racers were at odds longer than his 24.75 to 1. One of those, Isn't He Perfect, broke to the inside sharply at the start, pushing Mucho Macho Man into race favorite Animal Kingdom, who came out of the race with an injury.

Ruler On Ice tracked the pacesetting Shackleford from the start, and when the Preakness winner tired after 10 furlongs, the son of Roman Ruler took control and held off Stay Thirsty to win by three-quarters of a length.

Subsequently, Ruler On Ice was third in the G1 Haskell, fourth in the Travers, second in the Pennsylvania Derby, and third in the Breeders' Cup Classic. Those performances confirmed the racer's quality, and he raced to the midpoint of his 5-year-old season. Retired, he now lives on the farm of his owners near Versailles, Ky.

As with the classics a decade ago, when we look back on the September sale of 2021, someone may very well have taken home a classic winner.

Lothenbach Stables' Bell's the One, a multiple graded-stakes winning millionaire, leads a talented field of nine in Wednesday's $200,000 Grade 2 Honorable Miss, a six-furlong sprint for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Trained by Neil Pessin, Bell's the One, who boasts a record of 18-8-3-2, captured the 2020 Grade 1 Derby City Distaff at Churchill Downs by a nose over Serengeti Empress. Her graded stakes ledger also includes scores in the 2019 Grade 2 Raven Run at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky., and last year's Grade 3 Winning Colors at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

The 5-year-old Majesticperfection bay enters from a three-quarter length score in the Roxelana under returning rider Corey Lanerie on June 19 at Churchill.

“I'm really not scared of any sprint filly in the country right now, to be honest,” Pessin said. “It's just a question of if she runs her race. If she does, she's going to be tough to beat no matter who shows up. I respect them all, but I don't fear any of them. I'm very confident in my filly's abilities.”

Bell's the One rated closer to the pace last out in the 6 1/2-furlong Roxelana before popping outside rivals to secure the win.

“I'm trying to get her a little more that way, so we're not so pace dependent,” Pessin said. “In her last race, they didn't go fast early but we weren't far off of it. She was stuck in between horses – there were three across the track – and Corey let her suck back a little bit so she could get to the outside. When she turned for home, she just kicked on. She won by three-quarters, but it was a handy three-quarters.”

Bell's the One launched her current campaign with a narrow loss to Kimari in the Grade 1 Madison on April 3 at Keeneland ahead of a fourth-place finish in her title defense in the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff at Churchill in May.

“Kimari beat us at Keeneland and it was my mare's first out of the year,” Pessin said. “We also got stuck on the inside and didn't get to bounce outside. If we'd got outside, I think we'd have beat her that day.”

Bell's the One breezed a bullet half-mile in :47 flat on July 20 over the Arlington Park synthetic and will arrive in Saratoga on Sunday.

“It was an OK work. She went a little faster in the first part than what I wanted,” Pessin said. “She finished good and did it fairly handily. It didn't take a lot out of her. Fitness-wise, I don't have any issues. It's just a matter of if she handles the shipping and likes the track.”

Lanerie retains the mount from the outermost post 9.

“He knows her well and rode her excellent last time,” Pessin said.

Godolphin homebred Lake Avenue enters in search of her first graded stakes win since the 2019 Grade 2 Demoiselle in the final start of her 2-year-old campaign.

Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, the 4-year-old Tapit chestnut was winless in four starts last year but has enjoyed a resurgence in 2021, posting wins in an optional claimer at Gulfstream in February ahead of a 6 3/4-length score in the Heavenly Prize Invitational in March at the Big A.

Last out, Lake Avenue made the lead at the stretch call of the Grade 3 Bed o' Roses but could not stave off Estilo Talentoso, who prevailed by a neck in the seven-furlong sprint on a sloppy Belmont main track on June 4.

Junior Alvarado will pilot Lake Avenue from post 4.

Dennis Narlinger's graded-stakes-placed Sadie Lady, a 5-year-old New York-bred daughter of Freud, boasts a record of 20-8-1-3 with purse earnings of $406,322.

The speedy mare won the open-company Correction in her seasonal debut at Aqueduct in March ahead of a strong second in the Grade 3 Vagrancy on May 8 at Belmont. Last out, Sadie Lady went gate-to-wire in the six-furlong Dancin Renee for state-breds.

Trainer Rob Atras said Sadie Lady, who breezed a half-mile in :49.26 Friday on the Saratoga main track, may consider waiting for the state-bred Union Avenue Handicap on August 19.

“We breezed her this morning and she went really well. It was just an easy half with a nice little gallop out,” Atras said. “We're probable to run but there's also a New York-bred stake in just over three weeks, so we'll talk it over with the owner.”

Atras said Sadie Lady is at her best on the engine.

“She runs her top race when she can get out front and dictate it a little bit,” Atras said.

Jose Ortiz retains the mount from post 3.

Almost Heaven Stables' Honey I'm Good enters from a neck win in the Regret, contested at six furlongs over a muddy Monmouth Park main track on July 3.

Trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, the 5-year-old Shackleford mare was a gate-to-wire winner of the six-furlong Harmony Lodge over muddy going at Belmont last June.

Honey I'm Good will emerge from post 7 under Ricardo Santana, Jr.

Truth Hurts, trained and co-owned by Chad Summers with J Stables, added blinkers and romped to a 5 3/4-length score last out under Luis Saez in the off-the-turf Perfect Sting at one mile over a sloppy and sealed Belmont main track on July 3.

The 4-year-old Ontario-bred daughter of Tonalist tried her luck at longer distances last season, including a third in the 1 1/16-mile Bison City at Woodbine.

Truth Hurts breezed a half-mile in :48.54 on July 20 on the Saratoga main track under Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Summers said he is cautiously optimistic after her last-out win.

“I think it was good for her. The first time with blinkers on she was more aggressive,” Summers said. “She came out of the gate good and sat a perfect trip. I'm proud of how she finished up and she galloped out strong. She came out of the race like nothing. I know we'll be a big price on the board, but she's doing so well. Irad came out and breezed her the other day. He liked her and it gives me a lot of confidence going into Wednesday.”

Truth Hurts, who graduated at first asking sprinting 6 1/2-furlongs in December 2019 at the Big A, will shorten up to six furlongs for the first time.

“I think seven [furlongs] is probably her game, but she can go six,” Summers said. “With Sadie Lady and a few of the others with speed in there, I'm hoping we can work out a good trip.”

Rounding out a competitive field are Ain't No Elmers [post 1, Adam Beschizza], Reagan's Edge [post 2, Jose Lezcano], Don't Call Me Mary [post 6, Saez], and Miss Mosaic [post 8, Manny Franco].

The Honorable Miss is slated as Race 9 on Wednesday's 10-race card. First post is 1:05 p.m. Eastern. Saratoga Live will present daily television coverage of the 40-day summer meet on FOX Sports.

Coming off an impressive victory in the Grade 2 George E. Mitchell Black-Eyed Susan Stakes on May 14, Army Wife invaded Prairie Meadows in Altoona, Iowa, to take Friday night's Grade 3, $225,000 Iowa Derby by 3 3/4 lengths as the even-money favorite.

The Oaks was one of two graded stakes on the night, along with the G3 Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap. The third big race of the evening was the $250,000 Iowa Derby

Trained by Mike Maker and racing for W. Kirk Wycoff's Three Diamonds Farm, Army Wife was ridden to victory by Joel Rosario, who was aboard the Declaration of War filly for the first time in the Black-Eyed Susan at Pimlico. She covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.10 and paid $4 to win, It was her fourth victory from nine career starts.

Shesa Mystery finished second, with 8-5 second choice Pauline's Pearl 2 1/2 lengths farther back in third and The Grass Is Blue fourth in the field of six 3-year-old fillies. Sister Annie finished fifth, with Windmill trailing the field. Oliviaofthedesert was scratched.

Rosario was content to secure a cozy spot on the rail aboard Army Wife, who raced in fourth position early and in the run down the backstretch. Sister Annie hung up fractions of :24.27, :48.18 and 1:12.06 for the first six furlongs, with Shesa Mystery putting pressure on her going into the far turn.

Sister Annie and Shesa Mystery battled for the lead on the turn for home, but Rosario had them both measured, swinging Army Wife off the rail three wide into the stretch, hitting the front nearing the eighth pole and drawing off for the victory.

In the $250,000 Iowa Derby, New York-based jockey Jose Ortiz gunned Stilleto Boy to the lead at the start and the Kentucky-bred gelding by Shackleford relaxed on the front end, repelled a challenge from Flash of Mischief around the far turn, then cruised to victory by 4 1/2 lengths.

Trained by Doug Anderson and bred by John and Iveta Kerber, the Iowa Derby winner is owned by the Kerbers, Michael Coleman, Aaron Kennedy and trainer Anderson. Stilleto Boy was winning for the second time in seven career starts, having earned his maiden diploma in his fifth start, going wire to wire at Oaklawn Park on April 17. In his most recent start, Stilleto Boy finished fourth after never getting the lead in the Prairie Mile Stakes at Prairie Meadows on June 4.

Sent off the longest shot in the field of six (following scratches of Proxy, Bourbon Thunder and Snow House), Stilleto Boy paid $35.40 for the win. He ran the 1 1/16 miles on a fast track in 1:42.64 after setting fractions of :23.79, :47.73, 1:11.48 and 1:36.12.

“We wanted him on the front end and Jose did a fantastic job of getting him there,” said Andersen.

Flash of Mischief, who chased Stilleto Boy throughout, held second as a 12-1 outsider for trainer Karl Broberg, with Gagetown2 1/2 lengths back in third and 2-1 second choice Super Stock a neck back in fourth. Nova Rags, the 9-5 favorite, finished fifth, with Rightandjust trailing the field.

A filly by Shackleford (hip 573) worked the fastest quarter-mile of the week when covering the distance in :20 3/5 during Saturday's fourth session of the under-tack show ahead of next week's Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's June Sale of 2-Year-Olds. Consigned by Jonathan Navas's Navas Equine, the bay filly is out of Moondancer (Cuvee) and from the family of Grade I winner Kitten's Dumplings.

“She was always training well and has a good mentality,” Navas said. “But last week when she prepped at OBS, she went :21 1/5. I usually prep at 70%, nothing crazy. So that was a very good solid preparation and she just kept improving from there. She was eating good and feeling better every single morning getting closer to the breeze show. Fortunately enough, this morning she just repeated or improved what she had been showing me.”

Navas purchased the youngster for $7,500 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

“You just have to be in the right place at the right time,” Navas said of the bargain purchase. “I just happened to be lucky–maybe a few people had already purchased their horses and I was lucky to be there at the right time when the ring was a little lonely and there wasn't too much competition. I fell in love with her right away. I liked her body, her conformation and her size–she's got to be taller than 16 hands. It seemed like the right price, so I just went for it.”

From a racing family in Venezuela, Navas has been in the U.S. since 2005.

“I've always been around the racetrack,” he said. “I've been an assistant trainer for a few people and I exercise horses.”

Navas launched his consignment last year and his first group of graduates includes Windy City Red (Chitu), who sold for $54,000 at last year's OBS June sale and went on to finish third in last year's Speakeasy S. before competing in the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.

“I like competition and I don't get comfortable doing just one thing,” Navas said of the decision to start Navas Equine. “I like challenging myself. And that's one of the things that led me to try to open my own consignment and go and do great things if it's possible. At least to try it out.”

Based in Ocala, Navas aims to pinhook between 10 and 15 yearlings a year.

“I have clients, but not a lot of clients, so most of them are my horses,” Navas said. “But I've been doing breaking and training and getting good feedback. I have Marc Tacher, which is Sonata Stables. I am the one who is doing all of his breaking and training and then we send them to another consignment for them to finish the preparation and go to sales and racing. I've been fortunate to have good people supporting me.”

Seven horses worked the furlong in a co-bullet :10 flat Saturday: hip 570, a filly by Neolithic consigned by Hidden Brook on behalf of Patricia Generazio (video); hip 603, a colt by Central Banker consigned by RiceHorse Stable (video); hip 648, a filly by Bal a Bali (Brz) consigned by Little Farm Equine (video); hip 660, a colt by Bal a Bali consigned by Harris Training Center (video); hip 661, a gelding by Neolithic consigned by Two Oaks Equine (video); hip 697, a filly by Klimt consigned by Sugar Hill (video); and hip 713, a filly by The Big Beast consigned by Envision Equine (video).

The under-tack show concludes with a final session beginning at 7:30 a.m. Sunday. The June sale will be held next Wednesday through Friday with bidding beginning daily at 10:30 a.m.

Shackled Love and Maythehorsebwithu, separated by half a length in Saturday's $100,000 Private Terms at Laurel Park, could wind up meeting again for their next starts in the April 17 $125,000 Federico Tesio at the Laurel, Md., racetrack.

The 1 1/8-mile Tesio, headlining a program of seven stakes worth $750,000 in purses, once again serves as a 'Win and In' qualifier for Triple Crown-nominated horses to the $1 million Preakness Stakes (G1) May 15 at Pimlico Race Course.

Neither Shackled Love nor Maythehorsebwithu were among the 326 horses nominated to the Triple Crown for $300 by the initial Jan. 23 deadline. Horses can be nominated again by Monday, March 29 for a $6,000 fee.

Trainer Gary Capuano said that ZWP Stable, Inc. and Non Stop Stable's Maryland homebred Shackled Love, a son of 2011 Preakness winner Shackleford, emerged from the race well. It was the first stakes attempt for the bay gelding, who was the second-longest shot in the seven-horse Private Terms at odds of 21-1.

“He's good. He came out of the race good. It was a good race, a good effort,” Capuano said. “He's a good-feeling, nice kind of horse. He's definitely been improving quite a bit.

“It's amazing how things sometimes work out,” he added. “We stuck him in and looked at the race. His numbers fit with the race and he's been improving, so it was worth taking a shot. He had a good post position, the whole thing. It looked like he could be competitive in there if he ran his race.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

After winning in debut last fall at Delaware Park, Shackled Love had lost four straight races with back-to-back seconds entering the Private Terms. He pressed pacesetting even-money favorite Maythehorsebwithu from the gate, took a narrow lead in mid-stretch and dug in to the wire.

“He had been training good. It was a solid field and his numbers had been improving each race even though he's been beat,” Capuano said. “He got beat by a couple of those but he's been improving and training well, so it was worth taking a shot at it. We would have liked going through another condition first, but it works out better this way. If you're going to lose your condition you might as well lose it in a stake for $100,000. It's all good.”

Next up for Shackled Love is the Tesio, a race Capuano won in 2003 with Cherokee's Boy, also bred and owned by ZWP Stable. Cherokee's Boy won 19 times, 14 in stakes including the 2005 Salvator Mile Handicap (G3), from 48 starts and more than $1 million in purse earnings, and ran eighth in the Preakness.

“I would think so, as long as he comes out of race good and trains good. I don't see why we wouldn't,” Capuano said. “There's no other races for 3-year-olds, you have to run in a stake anyway. He's in the same boat as Shackqueenking and Brittany's horse. You have to run in the stake or you don't run for a while.”

Pocket 3's Racing's Shackqueenking, nose winner of the 1 1/16-mile Howard County to cap his juvenile season, moved into a contending position on the far turn but was unable to gain any ground and wound up fourth, beaten a total of 3 ½ lengths.

“He ran good. He just hung there the last part. He had every opportunity turning for home, but the other two they were just running comfortable,” Capuano said. “He's got a tendency to hang a little bit the last eight of a mile anyway, so we tried to get him moving so we could get some momentum and he did that but then he just kind of hung there the last part. He got beat three or four lengths which wasn't terrible.”

Michael Dubb and Bethlehem Stables' Maythehorsebwithu was making his two-turn debut in the about 1 1/16-mile Private Terms off a dominant four-length score over multiple stakes winner Kenny Had a Notion – trained by Capuano's older brother, Dale – in the one-mile Miracle Wood Feb. 20.

Ridden by Sheldon Russell, Maythehorsebwithu set a pace of 23.97 and 47.44 seconds before grudgingly yielding the lead, then came back on again after being passed.

“I thought he had him and then you see Gary's horse like, 'No, not now. I've got you.' It was a good horse race. You have to give them both a lot of credit. They both ran big,” trainer Brittany Russell said. “Absolutely, we're delighted. Another big effort. He's consistent and he runs hard every time, so what's not to be happy about?”

Maythehorsebwithu has done his best running at Laurel, with two wins and two seconds from four starts. He was beaten a neck by Kenny Had a Notion in the seven-furlong Spectacular Bid Jan. 16 to kick off his sophomore season and is also headed toward the Tesio.

“More than likely. We'll get him back to the track and see how he is. I'm definitely going to give him an easy couple weeks here, if he allows it,” Brittany Russell said. “This morning, he was laying down in his stall. He was exhausted. That's probably the first time I've noticed him do that after a run. We'll just let him kind of catch his breath and make a plan, but why wouldn't we try? He's doing nothing wrong in the afternoon.”

Russell reported that Madaket Stables, Ten Strike Racing, Michael Kisber and Black Cloud Racing Stable's Whereshetoldmetogo was doing well after opening his 6-year-old campaign with a victory in Saturday's $75,000 Not For Love for Maryland-bred/sired horses that marked his third consecutive win, all in stakes.

Despite never switching over to his right lead, Whereshetoldmetogo ran six furlongs in 1:09.82 to win the Not For Love by 2 ½ lengths as the 1-5 favorite in a field of seven.

“He's the greatest. We love him. He ran so good. It's tough because you watch these races sometimes where you're the heavy favorite like that and it just seems like you're not a lock,” Russell said. “Things can happen. Regardless, he steps up and gets the job done. Left lead and all, he did it.”

Next up for local sprinters is the $100,000 Frank Y. Whiteley going seven furlongs on the Tesio undercard April 17. Whereshetoldmetogo won the Whiteley, contested at six furlongs and rescheduled to Nov. 28 amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“I haven't spoken to anybody yet but I would love to keep him home,” Russell said. “He obviously likes it here, and keep a good thing going.”

Joel Politi's Littlestitious, a determined half-length winner of Saturday's $100,000 Beyond the Wire for 3-year-old fillies, remains at Laurel after shipping in from Louisiana for trainer Tom Amoss to earn her second career stakes victory.

Laurel has been under restrictions after a horse tested positive for the equine herpesvirus March 8, but no additional cases of EHV1 have been identified by the Maryland Jockey Club.

“She came out of the race in good shape. I spoke to the barn early this morning. We're trying to determine what stage we're in with the herpes [virus],” Amoss said. “That's going to have a lot to do with what our plans are. We know that we're there for another week, minimum with the horse, but that's just a logistics thing.

“Other than that, she came out of the race in good shape. We're really pleased with the way she ran. We think that there's a real future there as the races go a little further in distance and she transitions back to two turns, which is what we're going to do in the next start.”

The next local race for 3-year-old fillies is the $125,000 Weber City Miss, contested around two turns at about 1 1/16 miles April 17 and an automatic qualifier to the $250,000 Black-Eyed Susan (G2) May 14 at Pimlico.

Littlestitious, under Sheldon Russell, came with a steady run down the center of the track after tracking pacesetting favorites Street Lute and Fraudulent Charge, and edged the latter in the final sixteenth of a mile to win by a half-length. Street Lute, a six-time stakes winner including five in a row, wound up third as the 3-5 favorite in her first race beyond seven furlongs.

“I had great respect for the favorite in that race. I mean, what a record she had going in. I did not know how the race was going to play out [but was] confident in the sense that I thought our horse would run her race, but whether it was good enough against the other horses there, that was unclear,” Amoss said. “Watching the race unfold and watching the way she ran, I give a great deal of credit to the rider. He rode her really, really well.”

ZWP Stable and Non Stop Stable homebred Shackled Love pressed Maythehorsebwithu from the gate, forged a narrow lead in mid-stretch and dug in gamely when the even-money favorite surged again near the wire to spring a 21-1 upset of Saturday's $100,000 Private Terms at Laurel Park.

The 32nd running of the Private Terms at about 1 1/16 miles is the second step in Laurel's series of stakes for 3-year-olds following the one-mile Miracle Wood Feb. 20 and preceding the 1 1/8-mile Federico Tesio April 17, a 'Win and In' qualifier for Triple Crown-nominated horses to the 146th Preakness Stakes (G1) May 15 at Pimlico Race Course.

A gelded bay son of 2011 Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Shackleford, Shackled Love ($45.60) completed the distance in 1:43.56 over a fast main track to become a stakes winner in his first try. It was also the first career stakes win for rider Charlie Marquez, Maryland's leading apprentice of 2020 who turned 18 Jan. 25.

“I'm just so excited. I'd like to thank the trainers and owners and everybody that's gotten me here from when I first started,” Marquez said. “I'm lost for words. I don't really know what to say.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid=291 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid= data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Shackled Love was a late addition to the Private Terms field, having been entered for a race March 12 before the program was cancelled as a precaution after a horse at Laurel tested positive for EHV-1. Trainer Gary Capuano also saddled stakes winner Shackqueenking, another son of Shackleford.

“He ran such a game race last time out and he ran a pretty decent number. He's got some staying power, so we thought we'd take a shot,” Capuano said. “He drew a good post and there was nothing coming up right away. He's got some talent.”

Maythehorsebwithu, a four-length winner of the Miracle Wood trying two turns for the first time, got out quickly and assumed the lead from Post 2, going the opening quarter-mile in 23.97 seconds and the half in 47.55 with Shackled Love at his right hip. Shackqueenking ranged up into a contending spot in third around the turn racing on the far outside but was unable to keep up with the top two as they straightened for home.

“I expected to be close. The inside, Sheldon Russell, I thought he was going to be close and I thought my outside had a little bit of pace [Zertz],” Marquez said. “We were walking up front, so I wanted to push the pace a little bit and give my horse the confidence that he needed.”

Shackled Love stuck a head in front at the top of the stretch but jockey Sheldon Russell and Maythehorsebwithu was stubborn on the inside and came back for more, grudgingly giving way in the final yards. It was two lengths back to Excellorator in third, with Shackqueenking fourth by another length.

Zertz, Royal Number and Commodore Perry competed the order of finish.

“The race kind of set up the way we thought. We thought Sheldon on the inside was going to show some speed, and we had speed. It was just [Zertz], we didn't know what he was going to do,” Capuano said. “We thought that the pace would set up just about like that. Shackqueenking had a good shot turning for home and he just kind of hung. The other two just kind of kicked on.”

Shackled Love broke his maiden in debut last fall at Delaware Park but had lost his last four races, all at Laurel, beaten in separate entry-level optional claiming starts in December and January by Maythehorsebwithu and Royal Number. The Tesio in five weeks is a likely landing spot.

“I think so,” Capuano said. “As long as he comes back good, we'll try that.”

Private Terms raced in the colors of Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Janney's Locust Hill Farm, winning 12 races, nine stakes and more than $1.2 million from 1987-89 including the 1988 Federico Tesio (G3) and Wood Memorial (G1) and 1989 Mass Cap (G2). His track record of 1:47 1/5 in winning the 1989 Never Bend Handicap at Pimlico still stands. He sired Grade 1-winning millionaires Soul of the Matter and Afternoon Deelites.

Notes: Jockey Sheldon Russell scored a natural hat trick Saturday with Littlestitious ($10.20) in the $100,000 Beyond the Wire, Glory March ($4) in Race 4 and Whereshetoldmetogo ($2.40) in the $75,000 Not For Love. Both Whereshetoldmetogo and Glory March are trained by his wife, Brittany Russell … Five-pound apprentice Charlie Marquez doubled aboard Six Pack Sara ($6.20) in Race 2 and Shackled Love ($45.60) in the $100,000 Private Terms … Jockey Victor Carrasco also won twice, with Cordmaker ($8.60) in the $100,000 Harrison E. Johnson Memorial and Kiss the Girl ($6) in the $75,000 Conniver … There will be a jackpot carryover of $13,587.89 in the 20-cent Rainbow 6 for Sunday's nine-race program (4-9). Multiple tickets with all six winners Saturday each returned $282.58.
