Cleverly named Godolphin homebred Combustion (Jpn) (Discreet Cat) shot to the head of the leaderboard on the 'Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby' with a determined 3/4-length defeat of Geraldo Barows (Jpn) (Sinister Minister) in Sunday's Listed Hyacinth S. going a one-turn mile at Tokyo Racecourse. American-bred Sea Vixen (Into Mischief), the only filly in the field of 14, was a brave third.

Ridden forward by Breeders' Cup-winning jockey Yuga Kawada, Combustion raced handy to a good pace set by Sea Vixen and was glued to the fence as the field reached the midway stage. Asked for his best with 400 meters to travel, Combustion charged through inside of the front-runner a bit more than a furlong from home and held firm as Geraldo Barows, third in the course-and-distance first leg of the series, the Cattleya S. back in November, took a run at him late.

Combustion is the 36th stakes winner for GI Cigar Mile H. hero Discreet Cat and the sire's second Japanese stakes winner. Smoldering, a half-sister to three-time SW Fashionista (Jpn) (Street Sense), is the dam of a yearling full-brother to Combustion and was most recently covered by Godolphin's dual G1 Dubai World Cup hero Thunder Snow (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}).

Combined with the eight points he earned for his runner-up effort to Dry Stout (Jpn) (Sinister Minister) in the Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun in December, Combustion–who was not among the original nominees to the Triple Crown–now sits on 38 points, while Geraldo Barows took his point total to 14. Cattleya S. winner Consigliere (Jpn) (Drefong) runs in Saturday's $1.5-million Saudi Derby. The final leg of the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby is the Mar. 26 Fukuryu S. at Nakayama.

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this Saturday running at Chukyo. Also of note in Japan over the weekend is a debuting Deep Impact (Jpn) colt out of GI Kentucky Oaks winner Princess of Sylmar, while the weekend's action at group level features the progressive Potager (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in the G2 American Jockey Club S. His dam Ginger Punch (Awesome Again) was the Eclipse Award-winning older mare of 2007 and, like Princess of Sylmar, was purchased for seven figures at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale:

1st-CKO, ¥9,900,000 ($87k), Maiden, 3yo, 1800m
MODICA (AUS) (f, 2, American Pharoah–More Than Real, by More Than Ready) was spotting her Northern Hemisphere rivals a fair bit of maturity, but nevertheless turned in a bold debut effort, finishing two lengths' second as the betting favorite over this track and distance Jan. 10. The September-foaled bay, an A$260K purchase out of the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, is a half-sister to SW Miss Debutante (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and her GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf-winning dam is a full-sister to Miss Always Ready, whose son Structor (Palace Malice)–himself a GI BC Juvenile Turf hero–has been sold to Japan to stand stud. Modica is bred on the exact same cross as GSW and new Japanese stallion Four Wheel Drive as well as G1 February S. hero Cafe Pharoah. B-Kia Ora Stud Pty Ltd (NSW)

4th-CKO, ¥14,250,000 ($125k), Allowance, 3yo, 1400m
SEA VIXEN (f, 3, Into Mischief–Sly Warrior, by First Samurai), a $130K Keeneland September yearling turned $500K OBS March breezer, was placed twice from three starts on the grass to begin her career, but looked a new proposition altogether when racing to a seven-length victory on dirt debut at Tokyo Nov. 28. The bay returns to the main track for this, having finished down the field in a 1400-meter turf allowance at Hanshin on Christmas Day. Sky Vixen is out of a half-sister to SP Pull Dancer (Pulpit), the dam of the versatile Good Samaritan (Harlan's Holiday). This is the extended family of Bernstein, Wiseman's Ferry, et al. 4th-NKY, ¥9,680,000 ($85k), Maiden, 2yo, 1800m
DREAM AGENDA (f, 2, Curlin–Gender Agenda {GB}, by Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) was sent off the 8-5 favorite for her Sept. 18 bow over a sloppy local course and distance and gave a strong account of herself with a runner-up effort. A $200K buyback at Keeneland September last fall, the bay is the first foal from her Grade III-winning dam, herself a half-sister to the dam of champion and G1SW Pretty Pollyanna (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). The third dam includes European Horse of the Year User Friendly (GB) (Slip Anchor {GB}). Gender Agenda was sold on for $55K in foal to More Than Ready at KEENOV last month. B-Profoal Partners 7 LLC (KY)

A $110K KEESEP RNA last year, the New York-bred, produced by a stakes-placed full-sister to MSW Miss Narcissist, fetched $160K at this year's OBS March Sale. B-Final Furlong Racing Stable (NY)

SEA VIXEN (f, 2, Into Mischief–Sly Warrior, by First Samurai) placed twice from three starts on the turf to begin her career, but most recently switched to the dirt and galloped to a seven-length graduation at Tokyo Nov. 28 (see below, SC 2). That success notwithstanding, the $130K KEESEP yearling turned $500K OBSMAR breezer gets back on the grass this weekend. In addition to the ability she has already demonstrated, she has some pedigree for it, as her is a half-sister to SP Pull Dancer (Alywow), whose son Good Samaritan (Harlan's Holiday) was a two-time graded winner on dirt, but also took the GII Summer S. on the turf. B-Breeze Easy LLC (KY)

BEYOND THE FATHER (JPN) (c, 2, Curlin–Galileo's Song {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) is the first foal from his multiple Grade III-placed dam, a $1-million purchase by Shimokobe Farm with this colt in utero at Keeneland November in 2018. Galileo's Song is a half-sister to Magnificent Song (Unbridled's Song), who came from 11th and last to validate favoritism in the 2006 GI Garden City Breeders' Cup S. on the grass at Belmont Park. Beyond the Father debuted with a five-length victory on the dirt at Niigata Aug. 7 (see below, gate 7), but tries the turf this time around. SEA VIXEN (f, 2, Into Mischief–Sly Warrior, by First Samurai) has burned money as the favorite in her first two trips to the races, each over the metric seven furlongs, finishing a debut third at Sapporo Aug. 22 before improving one spot at that track Sept. 5. A $130,000 KEESEP yearling turned $500,000 OBS March breezer, the bay is out of a half-sister to MSP Pull Dancer (Pulpit), the dam of the versatile MGSW & MGISP Good Samaritan (Harlan's Holiday) and GSW Brave Nation (Pioneerof the Nile). SEA VIXEN (f, 2, Into Mischief–Sly Warrior, by First Samurai) is out of a four-time winning half-sister to MSP Pull Dancer (Pulpit), the dam of the versatile Good Samaritan (Harlan's Holiday), a two-time graded winner and Grade I-placed on the main track and GSW/GISP on the grass; and GSW Brave Nation (Pioneerof the Nile). A $130K Keeneland September yearling, Sea Vixen fetched $500K from Yuji Hasegawa after breezing a furlong in the bullet time of :9 4/5 at OBS this past March. B-Breeze Easy LLC (KY)
