Charlie Appleby, runaway leading trainer this season at Meydan by both earnings ($8,915,500) and percentage of wins (40%) amongst those conditioners with more than a handful of runners at the meet, got his third winner on the Super Saturday card with LEGEND OF TIME (GB) (c, 3, Sea The Stars {Ire}-Kissable {Ire}, by Danehill Dancer {Ire}) in the Listed Jumeirah Classic sponsored by Arabian Adventures. His earlier wins on the evening came with Bold Act (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) in the G2 Dubai City of Gold and with Cinderella's Dream (GB) (Shamardal) in the Listed Jumeirah Guineas. All three of the winners are Godolphin homebreds.

Perfect in his three starts at Meydan, Legend Of Time emerged from the early scrum in an eager third and had to be hard held by jockey William Buick. Quickly settling into a comfortable spot against the rail with cover just behind the leading duo of Athan (Arg) (Orpen) and Musical Act (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), Buick bided his time with a clearly loaded mount until the straight loomed. With little visible effort, Legend Of Time tipped out and around Athan as Musical Act floated wide. Legend Of Time already found the front before Buick encouraged him with hands and heels and was a facile winner despite Musical Act finding more and briefly looking for a battle until Legend Of Time kicked clear by 4 3/4 lengths. Like the winner, Musical Act is a Godolphin homebred trained by Appleby. Athan held for third as none of the others factored at the finish. The final time for the 1800 metres was 1:49.83.

Legend Of Time has been steadily building his CV, having won his debut at Haydock last fall. Off the board when trying the G3 Tattersalls S. at Newmarket three weeks later, he was put away before reemerging in Dubai to win conditions events Jan. 5 and Feb. 2, going 1400 meters and 1600 meters, respectively.

“He's won the series now and probably 1800 metres is more to his liking,” said Buick. “He's an exciting horse for the rest of the season. The American Turf Derby series over there might suit him.”

Appleby's exacta in the Jumeirah Classic mirrored his success in the race in 2023, when he sent Naval Power (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}), One Nation (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), and Highbank (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) to fill out the trifecta. He only had the two entrants this year.

Legend Of Time is the 117th black-type winner worldwide for Gilltown Stud's all-conquering Sea The Stars (Ire). With the Jumeirah Classic winner, the remarkable sire of 70 group winners now has two stakes winners out of daughters of Danehill Dancer and an additional two out of daughters of that one's sire, Danehill. The late Danehill Dancer has 168 stakes winners as a broodmare sire.

Kissable (Ire), dam of Legend Of Time and herself a listed American stakes winner who also placed in the G1 Moyglare Stud S., is the dam of G1 Qatar Prix de Royallieu winner Loving Dream (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}) and additional American stakes winner and Grade I stakes-placed Amandine (GB) (Shamardal). Her 2022 Pinatubo (Ire) colt died as a yearling and she produced a Night Of Thunder (Ire) filly last year. Her granddam, high class English runner Eva Luna (Alleged), produced multiple Group 1 winner Brian Boru (GB) (Sadler's Wells), global multiple group winner and multiple top-level placer Sea Moon (GB) (Beat Hollow {GB}), and the unraced Soviet Moon (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), dam of G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe/G1 Espom Derby winner Workforce (GB) (King's Best). Click for the ERA chart and video.

The 2021 Australasian Horse of the Year Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ}) has passed away due to foaling complications, announced Chris Waller via X on Sunday evening.

The 11-time Group 1 winner tallied the 2021 G1 Melbourne Cup to a venerable career and had been sent to France to race for conditioner Francis-Henri Graffard. After four winless outings in the Northern Hemisphere in 2022, including appearances in the G1 Darley Prix Jean Romanet, G1 Qatar Prix de Royallieu, and her final jump in the G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S., the four-time champion had been retired and bred to Sea The Stars (Ire).

“It is incredibly sad that we pass on the news on behalf of the ownership group that Verry Elleegant has passed away due to complications giving birth to her foal,” said Waller.

“The news is just filtering through to stable staff now and other close connections who are coming to terms with the tragic news. She was in fantastic hands on a farm who did all they could for her, and we would like to thank them for their efforts which we will be forever grateful for.”

8th-Meydan, AED500,000, Cond., 2-2, NH & SH 3yo, 1600mT, 1:36.11, gd.
Godolphin celebrated their fourth winner of the day bearing the royal blue, as LEGEND OF TIME (GB) (c, 3, Sea The Stars {Ire})–Kissable {Ire} {G1SP-Ire, SW & GSP-US, $225,919}, by Danehill Dancer {Ire}) drew off to win the Jumeirah Guineas Presented by Lincoln Nautilus by two lengths on Friday. The penultimate race of the day over 1600 metres on turf, the race marked the third win in four starts for the Charlie Appleby trainee. Content to track the first flight glued to the inside, the bay dropped a few lengths behind on the backstretch as a withering pace was set up front by Azna (Ire) (Shalaa {Ire}) and Musical Act (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) while shadowed by Shamrock Glitter (Fr) (Shalaa {Ire}). Shifting gears and with dead aim on the leading trio by halfway, Legend Of Time edged steadily closer with 500 metres to run. Swung out to produce his bid as Musical Act and Shamrock Glitter traded blows in the straight, the winner surged quickly past all comers to win easily. Athan (Arg) (Orpen) rallied strongly to take second with Shamrock Glitter hanging on for third, 4 1/4 lengths back. “He's a horse who has only improved,” said William Buick. “We always thought he would improve for stepping up to a mile and I think he'll be even more comfortable over 10 furlongs [2000metres]. Let's hope he can make all those necessary steps to put himself in that [Derby] picture. That's what these horses are there to do.” A winner at Haydock in September, he was fifth in the G3 Tattersalls S. later that month and made his 3-year-old bow a winning one when defeating Shamrock Glitter locally on Jan. 5. A half-brother to stakes winner and GI American Oaks third Amandine (GB) (Shamardal) and the G1 Prix de Royallieu heroine Loving Dream (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}), Legend Of Time has a yearling half-sister by Night Of Thunder (Ire) still to come. G1 St Leger/G1 Racing Post Trophy winner and sire Brian Boru (GB) (Sadler's Wells) is under the third dam, the G3 Park Hill S. victress Eva Luna (Alleged). Sales history: 150,000gns Ylg '22 TATOCT.

5th-Meydan, AED300,000, Cond., 1-5, NH & SH 3yo, 1400mT, 1:23.14, gd.
LEGEND OF TIME (GB) (c, 3, Sea The Stars {Ire}–Kissable {Ire} {G1SP-Ire, SW & GSP-US, $225,919}, by Danehill Dancer {Ire}) won a 7 1/2-furlong race at Haydock when unveiled in September, and plugged on to be fifth after a hampered passage in the G3 Tattersalls S. at Newmarket on Sept. 28. One of the leading fancies despite a horror draw in gate 14 of 16 in the full field for the Jumeirah Guineas Trial, he punched the breeze out wide as Athan (Arg) (Orpen) showed the way. Already only three deep as the field hit the turn, he maintained position in fourth approaching the lane. Given his cue by Buick, he soon let down past Saeed bin Suroor's Movie Maker (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), Athan, and the rallying Shamrock Glitter (Fr) (Shalaa {Ire}), who raced against the rail. The last name made a race of it inside the final 100 metres, but Legend Of Time, despite covering all of that extra real estate, was going best of the pair to win by a length and give Buick his third win on the card and trainer Charlie Appleby his second. Athan was another 1 3/4 lengths back, two lengths in front of Movie Maker. “I was very happy with him,” said Buick. “We did expect him to win but the pace wasn't overly strong and he jumped well and had to cover ground. He's a very progressive horse and will be better over a mile.” Best known for finishing third in the G1 Moyglare Stud S., the stakes-winning Kissable has already thrown stakes winner and GI American Oaks third Amandine (GB) (Shamardal) and Loving Dream (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}), who has both the G1 Prix de Royallieu and G2 Ribblesdale S. to her name. Since foaling Legend Of Time, Kissable has a 2-year-old colt by first-season sire Pinatubo (Ire) and a yearling filly by Night Of Thunder (Ire). Second dam Kitty O'Shea (GB) (Sadler's Wells) was one of four stakes winners oftlinefoaled by G3 Park Hill S. heroine Eva Luna (Alleged), whose best was G1 St Leger and G1 Racing Post Trophy victor-turned-sire Brian Boru (GB) (Sadler's Wells). Derby winner Workforce (GB) (King's Best), as well as Kodiac (GB) full-brothers Best Solution (Ire) and El Bodegon (Ire) are all Group 1 winners from this line, while Workforce's half-brother Emissary (GB) (Kingman {GB}) ran second in the G1 Melbourne Cup.

Cloudbreaker (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}–Deveron, by Cozzene) realised a final bid of 220,000 guineas from Avenue Bloodstock's Mark McStay during Thursday's Tattersalls Online December Sale. The 3-year-old, who earned black-type in August when finishing second in the Listed Aphrodite S. at Newmarket, was also fourth in the King George V S. at Royal Ascot earlier in June. Out of the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac placed Deveron, the Charlie Fellowes-trained filly is a half-sister to listed winners Lamar (Ire) and Haddaf (Ire).

“She's a lovely filly and has been extremely well trained by Charlie Fellowes,” said McStay of lot 59. “I inspected her [Wednesday] morning and was very taken by her–she's gorgeous looking with a great walk. It's a family I know very well from my days at Godolphin and Rabbah. I think it's safe to say that Sea The Stars is looking like being a very good broodmare sire. She's been bought for an Irish breeder with no mating plans yet, but we're delighted to get her.”

Fellowes added, “She was a very good racemare, she ran a massive race to finish fourth at Royal Ascot and got some black-type after that. We felt that the Online Sale worked really well for her because we felt she stood out, and we were delighted with the price we got for her. I am very much look forward to following her babies when they no doubt turn up at Tattersalls!”

Also included among Thursday's leading lots: 2-year-old Regal Defence (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) (lot 5), who finished an eye-catching third at Kempton on debut Wednesday night and realised 52,000 guineas to trainer Ian Williams. Recent Dundalk winner Never Cry Never (Ire) (No Nay Never) (Lot 52) was purchased for 21,000 guineas by Ger O'Leary from Fozzy Stack's Thomastown Castle Stables and the 4-year-old filly Reinitinruby (Ire) (Leading Light {Ire}) (Lot 125), a recent third in a competitive point to point, brought the same amount from Dan Astbury, acting on behalf of Stockton Hall.

At the close of bidding the Tattersalls Online December Sale realised a turnover of 566,800 guineas for the sale of 53 lots from 111 offered, at an average of 10,694 guineas. Almost 250 bidders registered for the sale from across Great Britain, Ireland, North America, Japan, Germany, Spain, Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands, Greece, Italy, and the Gulf region.

Wednesday's Insights features a daughter of G1 Golden Slipper heroine Estijaab (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}) set for her debut at Kempton.

16.55 Kempton, £6,800, Nov, 2yo, f, 8f (AWT)
Emirates Park's homebred EJAABIYAH (GB) (Frankel {GB}) is a Roger Varian-conditioned daughter of G1 Golden Slipper heroine Estijaab (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}), who encounters a baker's dozen in this unveiling. She was due to make her debut at Yarmouth last month, but was denied her opportunity with the abandonment of that meeting. Her opponents include Sean Woods newcomer Cherry Burton (GB) (Cracksman {GB}), who is a 110,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 daughter of stakes-winning G1 Oaks placegetter Shadow Dancing (GB) (Unfuwain), and Valmont's similarly unraced Seek And Destroy (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), a sale-topping 260,000gns Tattersalls December yearling and a full-sister to G1 Australian Cup-winning sire Fifty Stars (Ire), from the Ralph Beckett stable.

18.00 Kempton, £9,900, Nov, 2yo, 8f (AWT)
Rockcliffe Stud's MIDNIGHT GUN (GB) (Kingman {GB}) is out of MG1SW 1000 Guineas heroine Sky Lantern (Ire) (Red Clubs {Ire}) and thus a homebred half-brother to G1 Falmouth S. victrix Snow Lantern (GB) (Frankel {GB}). The Ed Walker trainee encounters a dozen in this debut, including Qatar Racing and David Howden's Sword (GB) (Kingman {GB}), who is a 500,000gns Book 1 son of G1 Prix Jean Romanet runner-up Ame Bleue (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), representing John and Thady Gosden.

Godolphin's G1 Derby winner Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}–Anna Salai, by Dubawi {Ire}) will join Hukum (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) at Darley Japan for stallion duty in 2024, Darley announced on Thursday. Fees for the G1 King George-winning duo will be revealed later.

The first horse to win the Derby and the King George in the same year since his paternal grandsire Galileo (Ire), Adayar was retired in July.

The bay broke his maiden by nine lengths at Nottingham at second asking at two for Charlie Appleby, and was group-placed prior to winning the 2021 Derby at Epsom before adding the King George in his next start. In two starts at four, he was second in the G1 Champion S., and resumed this term with a victory in the G3 Gordon Richards S. in May. After a third-placed run in the G1 Prince Of Wales's S. at Royal Ascot, he concluded his career with a second in the G2 Princess Of Wales's S. at Newbury in July. Overall, he earned $2,553,575 and boasts a record of 13-5-4-1.

A full-brother to the stakes winner Military Order (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), Adayar is out of G3 Prix de la Grotte winner Anna Salai, who also ran second in the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas. His dam is a half-sister to stakes winners Iguazu Falls (Pivotal {GB}) and Advice (GB) (Seeking The Gold), who both placed at group level. He is also kin to G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner National Defense (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), among others.

Hukum, a full-brother to the brilliant miler Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) won nine stakes races for his owner/breeder Shadwell, including the 2023 King George and the G1 Coronation Cup at Epsom. His female family features Shadwell blue hen Height Of Fashion (Fr) (Bustino {GB}).

Harry Sweeney, president of Darley in Japan said, “We are really excited to be able to stand two brilliant stallions in Japan, Derby winner Adayar by Europe's leading stallion Frankel, and King George winner Hukum by Sea The Stars. We hope that these excellent bloodlines will not only succeed in Japan, but also spread to Europe and the rest of the world. We look forward to welcoming you to view these stallions.”
