The Gerry Dilger Equine Scholarship Foundation would like to express its gratitude and appreciation to all its supporters that have contributed to the charity that assists young people starting off in the bloodstock business.

Based in Lexington, Kentucky, the foundation commenced its activities just three years ago in memory of County Clare native Gerry Dilger whose Dromoland Farm specialized in successful sales pinhooks and an elite breeding operation with great partners that produced consecutive Kentucky Derby winners Nyquist (Uncle Mo) and Always Dreaming (Bodemeister). However, Gerry was equally renowned as a nurturer of young people who found their way to Dromoland and gained so much life and work experience. The foundation was established by the Dilger family and friends to continue his teaching for the next generation and in a short period of time has awarded eighteen scholarships and three bursaries to students from around the world. Our partner schools in Ireland include University College Dublin, University of Limerick, CAFRE, KIldalton College and the Irish National Stud.

We were delighted to recently announce that Luis Ettedgui and Grace Hamilton were awarded scholarships to the Irish National Stud. Luis, a Venezuelan native, and a graduate from the University of Kentucky's Equine Science and Management program has experience working at Stonerside, Juddmonte, with Brad Cox and is currently working in Australia with Godolphin. Grace, originally from South Carolina is a University of Kentucky senior majoring in Equine Science and Management and minoring in Business. She has worked in many areas of the business including Coldwater Farm, Blandford Stud, Godolphin at Jonabell Farm and Marette Farrell, agent.

The board was very encouraged this year with the quality of applications for its various programs and will be announcing soon other award winners including the recipients of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Experience Scholarship. In a change of format for this particular scholarship, the awardees will be placed for one year with Springhouse Farm in Lexington and Hunter Valley Farm in Versailles.

The board also extends its thanks to all participants and organizers of the second foundation golf tournament which takes place Tuesday, Oct. 10 at Houston Oaks in Paris. Our first year was such a success that we will once again have a full turnout of twenty-nine teams of four. Further details of the charity's work and programs can be found here.

The Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation (TERF) has awarded $12,000 to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. In alignment with a mission to support and promote equine education by supporting organizations that are educating the public on the proper care of horses, TERF's scholarship recipients are Brooke Schiltz and Kaitlin Dullea. Schiltz hopes to go into racetrack practice in Florida and Dullea hopes to pursue a surgical residency.

“The Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine is very grateful for the support TERF is providing to its students, especially those planning to pursue equine medicine,” said Sheila Reakes, Director of Annual Giving at Cornell. “The College is embarking on a concerted effort to help students lower their debt-to-salary ratio, and generous scholarships like these can make a big difference in the lives of new graduates.”

Students enrolled in the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program (RTIP) can now apply for the 2023 Elizabeth Bracken Memorial Scholarship, which aims to support students aspiring to build careers in Thoroughbred racing, NYRA announced.

The scholarship was created in 2021 to honor the memory of Elizabeth Bracken, an RTIP graduate who spent 16 years at NYRA before returning to RTIP as Associate Coordinator and an instructor. Bracken died in November 2019; she was 52.

“We can't thank NYRA enough for their continued support of the RTIP via this scholarship and their sponsorship of the Global Symposium on Racing,” said RTIP Chair Robert Hartman. “NYRA has provided meaningful internship opportunities to RTIP students for decades, from my NYRA internship in 1992 to the present. The RTIP's unique blend of classroom and experiential learning prepares graduates to contribute to racing organizations on Day One. We are proud of our alumni that serve in leadership positions on the NYRA team to help further the organization's mission.”

The 2022 winner was Eric DeCoster, an RTIP senior from Chandler, AZ. DeCoster spent the summer interning at NYRA's racing office, at both Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course; and said he hoped to build a career in a racing office, ultimately as a racing secretary or director of racing.

The $10,000 annual scholarship will be split into two parts–with $5,000 awarded for the fall semester and $5,000 for the spring semester. Click here for more information.

Applications for the Odds On Racing Scholarship, a four-year, full-tuition scholarship award for new and transfer students to participate in the University of Arizona's Race Track Industry Program beginning this coming fall.

“This is an incredible opportunity for students who may have thought that attending the University of Arizona to prepare for a career in racing was financially out of reach” said Robert Hartman, Chair of the Race Track Industry Program. “This scholarship covers all tuition costs of attending the UArizona's Race Track Industry Program.”

The scholarship is thanks to a very generous donation from racing enthusiast and horse owner Dana Parham and is named for his standardbred racing operation, Odds On Racing Stable. Parham donated the funding for the scholarship to support an industry that he's passionate about and has been involved with in a variety of areas over the years. Through this gift, he's supporting the next generation of professionals who will steward the sport into the future.

“This award allows the best and brightest students, from any financial background, who are interested in racing to attend the University of Arizona and join the list of distinguished RTIP alumni,” said Hartman. Especially appropriate is the name of the scholarship–Odds On Racing. This gift will certainly allow the recipient to be the odds-on favorite to succeed in their career goals.”

The Indiana Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (ITOBA) awarded its first Herb and Darlene Likens Scholar Award recently at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. John Hernandez of Monticello, Ind. is the recipient of the first $2,500 scholarship from the newly installed program.

John is a graduate of Twin Lakes High School in Monticello, Ind. He is currently attending Ivy Tech in Lafayette, Ind. His father, Martin, works at Elliott Farms in Brookston, Ind., making John eligible for the award earmarked to families associated with Thoroughbred racing in the state of Indiana.

“This award was initiated by ITOBA this past spring to offer something to the thousands of people working behind the scenes in the Thoroughbred industry in the state,” said Tom Mosley, President of ITOBA. “Martin, John's father, has had his hands on so many horses that have emerged from this state. Martin is a prime example of a hard-working, dedicated, loyal horseman who is the backbone of the Indiana Thoroughbred industry.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Elliott Farms is Indiana's largest and oldest farm in the state. It is well known nationally for breaking, training, breeding and sale prep of the horses raised at the farm. Martin Hernandez has been a huge part of the entire services offered by Elliott Farms for more than two decades.

The Herb and Darlene Likens Scholar Award was created to assist Indiana's breeders, owners, farms, and their employees and families in their post high school educational expenses. The award is named after the Likens, longtime owners and breeders in the state, who assist with the award. The Likens are still active in breeding and racing Thoroughbreds from their farm in Madison County.

The Likens' Scholar Award leads into ITOBA's biggest event of the year, Indiana Champions Day set for Saturday, Oct. 30 at Indiana Grand. Racing begins at 12 p.m. and will feature four Thoroughbred stakes with followed by five Quarter Horse stakes, pushing purses for the day to more than $1 million. Numerous activities will complement the afternoon racing card, including a Cigar Rolling Station with free cigars to the first 200 racing fans, sweatshirt, hat, and license plate giveaways, two $1,000 handicapping contests, five $1,000 Megabet drawings, strolling entertainment, and food and beverage specials. The afternoon will be capped off with an appearance by the Headless Horseman.

Indiana Champions Day will also include two book signings associated with racing. Otto Thorwarth, who portrayed Ron Turcotte in the Disney movie “Secretariat,” will be available to sign his new book “No Ordinary Champion.” Tina Cleary, former Quarter Horse jockey, will also be available to sign her book “Growing Up With Moocher” based on a former Indiana racehorse. Both signings will take place trackside from 2 until 5 p.m.

The 19th season of Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing is now in progress and continues through Thursday, Nov. 11. Live racing is conducted at 2:25 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 11. First post all other Thursdays leading up to the end of the meet begin at 3:25 p.m. A special Indiana Champions Day highlighting the state's top Thoroughbred and Quarter Horses will be held Saturday, Oct. 30, beginning at noon. More information about the 2021 racing season is available at www.caesars.com/indiana-grand.

The Kentucky Equine Education Project Foundation (KEEP), and The Race For Education (RFE) are proud to announce their 2021 scholarship recipients.

The KEEP Foundation board of directors approved over $35,000 in scholarships to 11 students attending 10 universities across the Commonwealth. All of the 2021 scholarship recipients are students currently enrolled with a university or college in Kentucky in an equine and/or agriculture related major.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

In addition to these 11 Kentucky students, the Race For Education awarded it's annual Robert J. Frankel Scholarship to 3 New York state students: Reina Ceballos, Joseph Lee and Carlos Lopez. Now in it's 11th year, the Robert J. Frankel Scholarship, in honor of the late Robert (Bobby) J. Frankel, is awarded to a student whose family is employed in the Thoroughbred industry, pursuing any field of study at a college or university in California or New York state. All three Frankel Scholarship recipients, whose parents work in the barns at various tracks in New York, will be attending universities in New York.

“Kentucky is the horse capitol of the world and having the Commonwealth's colleges and universities prepare the next generation of leadership is vital to the horse industry's continued success. KEEP congratulates this year's scholarship awardees and looks forward to the future impact they will have on the industry,” said Elisabeth Jensen, KEEP's Executive Vice President.
