Many of the 15 horses signed on for Sunday's G2 Sapporo Kinen were on trial for future events on foreign soil, and while the lion's share of those toiled in the tricky underfoot conditions, Shadai Race Horse's Prognosis (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) was the one standing tallest at the finish as he galloped home a decisive winner.

Winner of the G2 Kinko Sho over the 2000 metres in March, Prognosis accepted an invitation to Hong Kong for the G1 FWD QE II Cup the following month, and, with record-setting Zac Purton at the controls, ran on from the back to finish two lengths adrift of the G1 Cox Plate-bound Romantic Warrior (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}).

Void of early speed, Prognosis managed to get all the way down onto the fence after leaving from gate 13 and raced last but one around the first turn as Unicorn Lion (Ire) (No Nay Never) crossed over from the 15 hole to head them off, as expected. Sensing a moderate pace over a course that had taken plenty of rain, Yuga Kawada asked Prognosis for a middle move at the halfway stage, and the team rallied one off the inside to race just ahead of midfield and just to the outside of the 3-year-old Top Knife (Jpn) (Declaration of War) nearing the third corner. Unicorn Lion hoisted the white flag 600 metres out, and Top Knife took advantage, but Kawada had Prognosis poised four wide at the head of the straight and opened up on them late. Fellow Shadai runner So Valiant (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}) outfinished G1 Dubai Turf runner-up Danon Beluga (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) for third. The winner would be a likely runner in the G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) Oct. 29 and a return trip to Hong Kong for the G1 Longines Hong Kong Cup is a distinct possibility.

Shahryar (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) was using the Sapporo Kinen as a possible steppingstone to the GI Breeders' Cup Turf, but struggled home 11th and was later found to have displaced. He will undergo a corrective procedure and his Breeders' Cup status is in doubt. Win Mighty (Jpn) (Gold Ship {Jpn}) holds Cups entries in Australia, but beat just two home Sunday.

Pedigree Notes:

Shadai acquired Velda subsequent to her daughter Vorda's runner-up effort in the 2013 Prix Morny and victory in that year's G1 Cheveley Park S. Prognosis is the fourth Shadai-bred produce for Velda, and she is also represented by a 2-year-old colt by Orfevre (Jpn), her final live foal, as she sadly passed away in April 2022.

Sunday, Sapporo, Japan

Sunday, August 6, 2023
5th-SAP, ¥13,720,000 ($96k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1800mT
MISS MATENRO (f, 2, Into Mischief–Miss Panthere {Jpn}, by Daiwa Major {Jpn}) is the first foal for her dam, who carried the silks of owner and breeder Chiyono Terada to victory in Group 2 company in Japan in 2018, where she had future Horse of the Year Lys Gracieux (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) back in third. Miss Panthere continues to reside in Kentucky, where she has since foaled a full-brother to Miss Matenro and a colt by Authentic before visiting Flightline this year. Norihiro Yokoyama rode Miss Panthere to her Group 2 win and has the call on Miss Matenro. Into Mischief is the sire of 22 winners from 24 Japanese starters. B-Chiyono Terada (KY)

6th-NII, ¥13,720,000 ($96k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1800m
HAPPY IMAGE (JPN) (f, 2, Good Magic–Sassy Image, by Broken Vow) is out of a winner of the GI Humana Distaff S. and GI Princess Rooney H. and was purchased in utero by Big Red Farm for $110,000 at the 2021 Keeneland January Sale. The Apr. 30 foal is related to three winners from five to race, including the 15-time winner V J Day (War Front) and is bred on a cross over Fappiano-line dams that has resulted in Grade II-winning juveniles Vegas Magic and Dubyuhnell. B-Big Red Farm

11th-NII, Leopard S.-G3, ¥76,000,000 ($534k), 3yo, 1800m
MYSTIC LORE (c, 3, Arrogate–Folklore, by Tiznow) was beaten narrowly on career debut on turf back in February, but broke his maiden in fine fashion on the dirt the following month and tacked on the equivalent of a first-level allowance when last seen June 24 (see below, SC 7). Having been given a standby invitation for last month's Japan Dirt Derby, the $500,000 Keeneland September purchase finds a good spot here for his stakes debut. The son of 2005 champion 2-year-old filly Foklore boasts a big pedigree, as Folklore's half-sister Rhodochrosite (Unbridled's Song) produced Triple Crown winner Contrail (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), whose first-crop progeny flew off the shelf at last month's JHRA Foal Sale. Another half-sister to Folklore, GSP Delightful Quality (Elusive Quality), supplied 'TDN Rising Star' and two-time Eclipse Award winner Essential Quality (Tapit). Leading rider Yuga Kawada has the call. B-Lewis Thoroughbred Breeding LLC (KY)

Sunday, August 14, 2022
5th-NII, ¥13,400,000 ($100k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1800mT
TRIPLE LOOP (f, 2, Justify–Morena {Per}, by Privately Held) is the latest to make the races from her dam, three times a champion in her native Peru whose five American graded-stakes placings under the care of Michael Matz includes a third to Icon Project (Empire Maker) in the 2009 GI Personal Ensign S. at Saratoga. A $375,000 purchase by Hideyuki Mori out of last year's Keeneland September sale, the May 12 foal is a half-sister to 2016 GI Belmont S. hero Creator (Tapit), who now stands in Japan. Yutaka Take takes the call. B-Mt Brilliant Broodmares LLC (KY)

6th-SAP, ¥14,670,000 ($110k), Allowance, 3yo/up, 1700m
CANDY DRIVE (c, 3, Candy Ride {Arg}–Supreme, by Empire Maker) was well beaten in a single juvenile appearance on the turf, but is since the owner of a pair of wide-margin victories on the dirt at Mombetsu on the lesser NAR circuit this past April. A $95,000 KEESEP RNA turned $500,000 OBS March breezer, the bay is a half-brother to GI Met Mile hero Silver State (Hard Spun) and his second dam Mon Belle (Maria's Mon) was a full-sister to GI Kentucky Derby hero Monarchos. Stonestreet acquired the colt's SW & GSP dam for $800,000 at Keeneland November back in 2013. B-Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC (KY)

Dobune (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), who cost new owner Susumu Fujita a whopping ¥517.1 million (about US$4.7 million) at the Chiba 2-Year-Old Sale this past May, overcame a wide gate and belied his inexperience with a two-length debut victory in a newcomers' event going 1500 meters (about 7 1/2 furlongs) on turf at Sapporo Racecourse Saturday afternoon.

Off as the 17-10 favorite after trading at odds-on for the majority of the wagering, Dobune more or less walked out of ate 11 and was allowed to find his footing by Yutaka Take, who settled the colt in the latter third of the 12-horse field. Asked to improve his position about five wide on the turn, Dobune drifted out a bit while rallying seven deep into the straight, gathered in Speed Glamour (Into Mischief) with a little less than a furlong to race and was punched out hands-and-heels to score with relative ease (video).

Among the last handful of horses by the legendary Deep Impact, who passed away in the summer of 2019, Dobune was bred by Shadai Farm and is the fourth foal out of Premier Steps (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}), Group 3-placed in England and France before winning the 2013 Sweetest Chant S. when trained by Chad Brown for Swift Thoroughbreds, Vintage Thoroughbreds, Michael Kisber and Bradley Thoroughbreds. She was third in the 2014 GIII Wilshire S. for trainer Tom Proctor and was acquired by Shadai for $400,000 at the 2015 Keeneland January Sale.

Deep Impact's current crop of juveniles also includes Command Line (Jpn), a son of GISW Condo Commando (Tiz Wonderful), who was accorded 'TDN Rising Star' status off a facile debut defeat of Conch Pearl (American Pharoah) in early June. The latter, subsequently third on the turf, returned to break her maiden by eight lengths when trying the dirt for the first time at Kokura Racecourse. The late Shadai stallion was also responsible for heavily backed debut winner Candescent (Jpn) Saturday at Niigata.

Dobune would be a candidate for races like next month's G2 Saudi Arabia Royal Cup (1600mT) at Toyko and farther down the road, the G1 Asahi Hai Futurity (1600mT) or the G1 Hopeful S. (2000mT).

The G3 Sapporo Nisai S. featured nine juveniles, but it was the June 26 debut winner Geoglyph (Jpn) (Drefong) who was the star of the show on Saturday, drawing off to win by four lengths.

The first black-type winner for his GI Breeders' Cup Sprint-winning sire, the even-money favourite hopped slightly at the start and was last entering the first turn. Tucked in behind as Top Cast (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}) cut out the early running, pilot Christophe Lemaire kept the chestnut in touch with his foes and began to make up some ground as the pacesetter covered five furlongs in 1:00.30.

Geoglyph's rallying rush continued on the far turn and he had moved up to fourth with a quarter-mile yet to travel. The Sunday Racing colourbearer came charging three deep into the lane, took command and skipped away to win as much the best. Ask Wild More (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}) closed to take second four lengths back and 1 ½ lengths to the good of fellow closer Tosen Vanno (Jpn) (Vanquish Run {Jpn}).

Pedigree Notes

Drefong, named Eclipse Champion Sprinter Stateside in 2016 and a three-time Grade I winner, has 78 foals from his first crop that are 2-year-olds of 2021. The son of dual Eclipse Champion Grass Horse (2009/2010) and 2009 Eclipse Champion Older Horse Gio Ponti (Tale of the Cat) stands at Shadai Stallion Station.

The fourth foal and runner from his dam, the G1 Shuka Sho and G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. third Aromatico (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}), Geoglyph is the third winner and first black-type scorer. Since foaling Geoglyph, she has a yearling colt by Epiphaneia (Jpn) and a weanling filly by Harbinger (GB) to her credit. Aromatico is out of the Sunday Silence mare Nasca (Jpn), who is a half-sister to MGSW Inti Raimi (Jpn) (Special Week {Jpn}); Group 3 hero San Valentin (Jpn) (Special Week {Jpn}); SW Over the Wall (Jpn) (Dr Devious {Ire}); and the winning dam of MGSW Albert (Jpn) (Admire Don {Jpn}).

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Kokura, Niigata and Sapporo Racecourses. It could be a good weekend for Into Mischief and for his son Practical Joke, who is to be represented by one of his first-crop runners in Group 3 company Sunday at Kokura:

Saturday, September 4, 2021
5th-SAP, ¥13,400,000 ($122k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1500mT
SPEED GLAMOUR (f, 2, Into Mischief–Island Escape, by Petionville) was led out unsold on a bid of $250,000 at Keeneland September last year, but breezed a furlong in the joint-bullet time of :9 4/5 at this year's OBS March Sale and was knocked down to owner Yuji Hasegawa for $500,000. A half-sister to treble GSW–a pair on turf and another in the slop– Tricky Escape (Hat Trick {Jpn}), the February-foaled bay hails from the extended female family of GISW Awesome Humor (Distorted Humor). B-Machmer Hall (KY)

5th-KOK, ¥13,400,000 ($122k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1200mT
JODELN (c, 2, More Than Ready–Her Majesty's Flag, by Midshipman), a $100,000 KEESEP acquisition by trainer Hideyuki Mori, is the first foal to the races for his dam, a stakes winner over the Woodbine all-weather track and stakes placed on conventional dirt. The colt's stakes-winning third dam Regal Pennant (Banner Bob) dropped GSW Regally Appealing (Valid Appeal); SW Regal Miss Copelan (Copelan), the dam of MGSW Rockport Harbor (Unbridled's Song); and SP Patti's Regal Song (Unbridled's Song), dam of recent GI CCA Oaks victress Maracuja (Honor Code). B-Mercedes Stables LLC (KY)

5th-NII, ¥13,400,000 ($122k), Newcomers, 2yo, 2000mT
KIMIKOSO SHACHO (c, 2, Arrogate–Delicate Lady, by Thunder Gulch), whose dam was third in the 2015 GII Adirondack S., was offered in utero at Fasig-Tipton November in 2018, but was bought back when bidding stalled out at $225,000. Purchased by Mori for $200,000 at KEESEP last fall, the gray colt descends from the female family of SW Pistols Drawn (First Defence) from the same Unbridled's Song sire line, and GISW A Wild Ride (Wild Again).
