After initially saying he was uninjured following a spill he was involved in on Sunday at Monmouth Park–and even riding two races later–jockey Jorge Luis Gonzalez revealed Monday that he suffered a stable fracture of his L3 vertebrae from the incident that could sideline him four to six weeks.

Gonzalez went for tests at Monmouth Medical Center late Sunday night after feeling discomfort.

“I'm in a lot of pain now,” he said.

In addition, jockey Samy Camacho, involved in the same spill, will undergo further evaluation Monday in Florida to learn the extent of a right shoulder injury he suffered during the mishap, according to his agent Mike Moran.

Camacho, second in the rider standings at Monmouth Park with 29 wins, flew to Tampa Sunday night. Camacho lives in the Tampa area.

“His shoulder is sore, but the X-rays (taken Sunday at Monmouth Medical Center) did not show anything broken,” said Moran. “It could be dislocated, we're not sure. But the initial X-rays did not show a break.”

Camacho hit the turf in the fourth race when his mount, Bingo's Girl (Yoshida {Jpn}), could not avoid a fallen Momma Kim (Noble Mission {GB}) and jockey Jorge Gonzalez. Momma Kim went down after clipping heels with Gold Alliance (Goldencents), who drifted out at the three-eighths mark of the five-furlong grass event for 2-year-old fillies.

Because of the uncertainty over the extent of the injury, Moran did not yet have a timetable for Camacho's return. The 35-year-old from Caracas, Venezuela, has been riding first call for Klaravich Stables and Chad Brown at Monmouth Park, having won with eight of 14 starters for those connections at the meet.

“He will be off at least a week, maybe a couple of weeks,” said Moran. “We should know more after he sees the doctor today. He wants to be 100 percent when he does come back.”

Gonzalez, who has five wins from 42 starts at the Monmouth meet, said he has scheduled a follow-up with an orthopedist.

He said he initially did not think he had suffered any injuries in the spill and even rode Bayou Shack (Shackleford) to a second-place finish two races later.

Peter Brant's Salimah (Ire) (El Kabeir), the first American starter for her Yeomanstown Stud-based sire and former 'TDN Rising Star', matched that feat with a highly impressive debut success Saturday afternoon at Tampa Bay Downs.

As skinny as 4-5 in the latter stages of the wagering, the Peter Brant runner eased out all the way to 7-5 and was 13-10 when the gates flew. Off to a hesitant beginning beneath Samy Camacho, Salimah was allowed to find a rhythm and raced with just two of her rivals behind her as they hit the first turn. Quietly ridden through the middle stages and guided out into the clear, the filly–a gray like her sire–was consigned to a four- and five-wide run on the turn and was flushed out into the seven or eight path at the top of the lane. But continuing on undaunted, Salimah leveled off beautifully down the center of the course, hit the front under a full head of steam at the furlong grounds and widened with every stride to score by a good five lengths in a time that belies the strength of the peformance.

Bred by Yeomanstown Stud out of the stakes-winning Promised Money, a mare by the nursery's stalwart stallion Dark Angel (Ire), Salimah–a half-sister to the Group 3-placed Fivethousandtoone (Ire) (Frankel {GB})–cost Brant and company 180,000gns at the 2020 Tattersalls October Yearlings Sale, easily the most expensive of 60 first-crop yearlings by El Kabeir that season. A half-sister to SW Beldale Memory (Ire) (Camacho {GB), Promised Money is the dam of a 2-year-old colt by the outstanding Lope de Vega (Ire) and a yearling filly by Invincible Army (Ire).

El Kabeir cost Zayat Stables co-salestopping $250,000 at the 2013 OBS August Yearling Sale and earned his 'Rising Star' when hosing up by 10 3/4 lengths at second asking at Saratoga in 2014. He closed his freshman campaign with a game success in the GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. and celebrated the turn of the calendar with a 4 3/4-length romp in the GIII Jerome S. at Aqueduct. He added a convincing score in the GIII Gotham S. and was also a good third to Frosted in the 2015 GI Wood Memorial S. His first crop to the races has now yielded 18 winners in nine jurisdictions, including Group 2 scorer Don Chicco (GB) and other stakes winner Masekela (Ire) and Sa Filonzana (Ire). El Kabeir is standing his fifth year at stud for a fee of €6,000.

Samy Camacho has been performing like a man on a mission over the last six racing days at Tampa Bay Downs.

Camacho, who won last year's Oldsmar riding title with 111 victories, has ridden far more horses this season than any other jockey, a tribute to the rider's skills and athleticism as well as the hustling of his agent, Mike Moran.

And since many of the track's higher-percentage trainers like using Camacho, the winners are inevitably starting to pile up.

The 33-year-old Caracas, Venezuela product rode four winners Friday, giving him 35 for the meet – eight ahead of runner-up Pablo Morales. More notably, Camacho has 14 victories from his last 40 mounts, with 12 seconds and five thirds.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

That serious run of success includes a victory last Saturday for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott with the 3-year-old Florida-bred filly Outfoxed in the $125,000 Gasparilla Stakes.

Camacho's most exciting victory Friday came in the seventh race on the turf, a one-mile maiden special weight race for 3-year-olds. Refusing to accept defeat, Camacho kept scrubbing on the Chad Brown-trained first-time starter Napoleonic War, pushing the colt into a dead-heat with another first-time starter, trainer Christophe Clement's colt Seigneur, ridden by Hector Rafael Diaz, Jr.

“I thought I lost it when I crossed the wire, and I was a little mad because I knew he was better than the other horses in the race,” Camacho said. “He was a little bit hyper in the gate, just playing around, and when the doors opened he propped up and lost the break. The pace was slow and I was on heels all the way, but when I asked him he came flying.

“I think that horse wins by 5 lengths if he doesn't miss the break, but I kept trying and we got a dead-heat. When I ride for Chad Brown, I feel like I'm driving a Rolls-Royce,” Camacho said.

Camacho began Friday's card with victories in his first two tries. He won the second race on Mystery Mo, a 4-year-old gelding owned by Averill Racing and trained by Gerald Bennett. Camacho returned to the winner's circle after the third race with Berhanu, a 4-year-old Florida-bred gelding owned by Chuncho Bravo Stable & Farm and trained by Javier Morzan.

In the sixth race, Camacho helped 4-year-old Florida-bred filly Cajun Spice earn her first career victory for owners Karyn Philipp and Tage Boohit. Philipp is the trainer.

Camacho also had a second and a fourth on the card.

Almost two-thirds of the meet remains for Morales, five-time champion Antonio Gallardo and Fernando De La Cruz to carve into Camacho's lead in the standings. But as long as Camacho stays healthy and keeps believing in himself, his rivals will be hard-pressed to prevent him from a successful defense.

“I feel great. I have a lot of confidence in myself and Mike Moran,” Camacho said. “I feel happy when I get to ride a lot of horses, because I have more chances to win more races.”

For many 3-year-old Thoroughbred owners and trainers, January is a month when dreams can take wings.

On Skyway Festival Day Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs, the connections of a pair of Florida-breds – $125,000 Pasco Stakes winner Markhamian and $125,000 Gasparilla Stakes winner Outfoxed – gained a license to look toward even more lucrative prizes after convincing victories on the fast Oldsmar racing surface.

Markhamian, a late May 2018 colt bred and owned by Sergio Ripamonti and trained by Juan Carlos Avila, found another gear in deep stretch to post a 2 ½-length triumph from Provocateur, with favorite Cattin, the Dec. 4 Inaugural Stakes winner, third in the seven-horse field. Marcos Meneses rode the winner, who posted a 7-furlong time of 1:23.23 and paid $12.60 as the fourth betting choice.

Outfoxed was just as impressive in the Gasparilla, which featured a field of eight ambitious sophomore fillies. Reserved in mid-pack early by jockey Samy Camacho, Outfoxed staged a tenacious rally through the stretch to catch the Dec. 4 Sandpiper Stakes winner, Strategic Bird, with Goddess of Fire rallying to grab second, three-quarters of a length back of the winner and three-quarters better than Strategic Bird.

Outfoxed, who won a pair of Florida Thoroughbreds Breeders' and Owners' Association stakes last year at Gulfstream by a combined 22 ¾ lengths, completed the 7 furlongs in 1:23.37. She paid $4.20 as the betting favorite. Now 3-for-4 lifetime, she is owned by the LNJ Foxwoods concern of Larry and Nanci Roth and their daughter Jaime Roth and trained by Hall of Fame conditioner Bill Mott.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

The best news for the connections of the winners, on this sunny and pleasant Saturday, at least, is that both were eligible for the $50,000 Florida Sire Stakes bonus and the $25,000 Florida-bred bonus (both offered through the FTBOA), meaning they each earned a cool $105,000 from the total purse.

In Saturday's third stakes, the $50,000 Wayward Lass for older fillies and mares, 7-year-old mare Nantucket Red stole away to a 6-length lead up the backstretch and had plenty left in the tank to turn back a late rally from betting favorite Allworthy by 3 lengths. Don't Get Khozy finished third.

Olaf Hernandez rode Nantucket Red, who paid $33.60 to win after completing the 1 1/16-mile distance in 1:44.53 for her first stakes victory. The daughter of Get Stormy-Scarlett Madeleine, by Smart Strike, is owned by Colebrook Farms of Canada and trained by Michael Wright, who is 5-for-5 at Tampa Bay Downs this season.

Back to the Pasco, after which Meneses, who is based at Gulfstream Park in south Florida, let out a loud whoop when asked to describe his emotions. Most in the crowd expected the invader to fade after Provocateur and Cattin put in their moves on the turn for home, but Meneses, who has ridden Markhamian in all three starts, could feel his horse was just starting to roll along the inside.

“This horse did everything perfect today,” Meneses said after the son of Social Inclusion-Peruvian Jane, by Colonel John, improved to 2-for-3 with a second. “The fractions were a little fast (22.22 seconds for the first quarter-mile and 44.86 for the half), but I knew I had the horse in the last furlong.”

Ripamonti, who campaigns Markhamian under his Santa Rosa Racing Stables banner, was delighted with the victory, which could put Markhamian on track for the Grade 3, $250,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes here on Feb. 12. “I thought he might be done on the turn, but this horse has a lot of (guts),” Ripamonti said. “Marcos did a good job urging him, and he had the heart to get it done. It was a courageous effort and he drew away at the end.

“He was coming into the race fantastic; he was in great shape and his color and skin tone were good. He was super-ready,” Ripamonti said.

Avila, who knew his horse was talented coming into the race, could have another one like his 2020 G2 Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby winner, King Guillermo. That's the beauty of this time of year; you never know.

Certainly, the connections of Outfoxed were just this side of “over the moon” after she beat a graded stakes-placed filly in Goddess of Fire and a stakes winner in Strategic Bird. Camacho, who was riding the daughter of Valiant Minister-Savingtime, by Kantharos, for the first time, was able to follow Mott's pre-race instructions nearly to the letter, and it paid off in a professional and convincing triumph for the winner, whose previous victory on Sept. 25 came in the 1 1/16-mile FTBOA Florida Sire My Dear Girl Stakes at Gulfstream.

“(Mott) said she doesn't have great early speed and to put her in the middle of the pack early, and that's what I did,” Camacho said. “I got her to relax, and when the other horses started to move I did my work and she responded pretty well. I thought I had the best horse in the race and I thought she was the best at the distance.

“I feel great, because every time I ride for trainers like Bill Mott, it gives me more confidence. It's a good feeling,” added Camacho, who added the 10th race on the turf on 4-year-old filly Investmentstrategy for owner Klaravich Stables and trainer Chad Brown.

Mott, who watched the race from south Florida, figured going in that Outfoxed might have to work harder than she had in her two previous victories. “It was a different group of horses on a different racetrack , and I thought it took her about a quarter-mile to get her legs under her,” he said. “But she was able to get up in gear enough for the win and was very professional about it.

“The water is going to get deeper from here on, and I think her toughest tests are ahead of her,” said Mott, who said the $150,000 Suncoast Stakes here on Feb. 12 at a mile-and-40-yards could be an option for Outfoxed's next start. “We want to keep the doors open at Tampa and elsewhere.”

Wayward Lass Stakes winner Nantucket Red, whose five previous starts came on turf, had won an allowance/optional claiming event here on the lawn on Dec. 17 by a neck before Wright decided to try dirt, with prodding from Colebrook Farms owner John Burness.

“She got beat 17 lengths in her last start on dirt (last March at Gulfstream), but Mr. Burness told me this is different dirt at Tampa,” said Wright. Indeed, Nantucket Red worked a crackerjack half-mile here on Dec. 31 on the main surface in 47 3/5 seconds, second-fastest of 43 that day at the distance.

“That's one for the underdog,” Wright said. “She went the half-mile in (47.53 seconds), and that was it.”

Olaf Hernandez, one of several underrated jockeys here, followed his instructions almost perfectly, and was surprised the rest of the field let him get such a big lead. Although she drifted out in the stretch, Nantucket Red was never threatened.

“I want to thank Mike and all the guys in his barn, because they did a great job getting this mare ready,” Hernandez said. “I asked her again at the quarter pole and she kept going.”

Florida's Thoroughbred breeding and racing industry put its best foot forward today at Tampa Bay Downs in Tampa, Fla., and even fans who didn't cash a ticket came away feeling like winners after a pair of breathtaking stakes races.

In the fourth race, the fifth edition of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association City of Ocala Florida Sire Stakes for registered state-bred fillies and mares, unbeaten 3-year-old R Adios Jersey engineered a tour de force, dominating four rivals for an 11-length victory.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Two races later, in the FTBOA Marion County Florida Sire Stakes for registered state-bred males, owners, trainers, and spectators were left gasping as 4-year-old colt Shivaree defended his 2020 Marion County title with a desperate rally in the final strides that deprived 5-year-old gelding R Mercedes Boy of victory by a head.

Both winners earned $60,000 from the $100,000 purses, but it was the thrills they provided along the way that proved priceless. Shivaree's winning time of 1:22.58 for the seven-furlong distance was .02 seconds faster than R Adios Jersey, but it should also be mentioned she was geared down late while Shivaree was all-out at the finish.

Jockey Paco Lopez knew R Adios Jersey was virtually flying during the early stages of the City of Ocala. But the 3-year-old filly felt so comfortable beneath him, he decided it would be counter-productive to try to slow her down.

By the time she got to the 1/8-mile pole of the seven-furlong race, her four Florida-bred rivals were vying for second place. R Adios Jersey continued to roll, improving her record to 6 for 6.

An overwhelming favorite in the wagering, R Adios Jersey paid $2.40 to win. She probably would have set a stakes record had not Lopez throttled her back in the final yards, still posting a time of 1:22.60, .20 seconds off Surprise Wedding's 2017 stakes mark. Starship Nala finished second and Bramble Berry was third.

R Adios Jersey, who won the Grade 3 Charles Town Oaks on Aug. 27 in her previous start, is owned by Rich Averill's Averill Racing, Anthony Mattera's ATM Racing, and retired major league baseball outfielder Jayson Werth. Georgina Baxter trains the daughter of Adios Charlie-Marion Theatre, by Montbrook, who was bred in the Sunshine State by Ocala Stud and J. Michael O'Farrell, Jr.

First-place money raised R Adios Jersey's career earnings to $427,400.

“That was kind of easy, but when you have a very nice, fast filly like that, it can look easy. I wanted her to go in :22 (seconds) and :46 (for the quarter-mile and the half), but (:21.79) and (:44.35). … she's just very fast,” Lopez said. “She wanted to go so hard but I didn't fight her too much, because she was doing it very comfortable. She was really sharp today and Georgina did a great job getting her ready.”

Lopez has ridden R Adios Jersey in all but one of her starts, including the Charles Town Oaks and the Florida Cup Stonehedge Farm South Sophomore Fillies Stakes here in March.

Bradenton, Fla., resident Averill, who owns Rich Averill Masonry, has built an impressive racing resume since emerging on the scene in 2005 with Florida Oaks and G2 Delaware Oaks winner R Lady Joy. With such prominent stakes winners as Lady's Island, Pay Any Price, R Angel Katelyn, Paradise Dancer, and G2 Saratoga winner R Free Roll to his credit, Averill keeps proving he's a major player.

As is customary when he competes in a stakes race at Tampa Bay Downs, he brought close to 100 family members, co-workers, friends, and friends of friends to enjoy R Adios Jersey's sheer brilliance.

“We wanted this race for the hometown team, and it's great when the plan comes together,” Averill said. “Every race, she has done better and better and better. She's 6 for 6 and you can't ask for more than that. We're taking things one race at a time with her, and we'll figure out what's next.

“I always try to plan a party here with my friends and family and co-workers, and right now it's a feeling of stress relief because I don't have to answer all the questions of 'why didn't you win.' It's fun to get new people into the game, like Anthony, who moved down from New Jersey, and Jayson, and today is a day they will always remember in a good way.”

In the Marion County, Shivaree bettered his record to 5 for 23 the hard way, digging into a deep reserve of desire in the final strides to edge a tiring but game R Mercedes Boy. Samy Camacho rode the winner for breeder-owner Jacks or Better Farm and trainer Ralph Nicks.

Shivaree, the 2020 G1 Curlin Florida Derby runner-up, raised his lifetime bankroll to $546,294.

Camacho said the race unfolded as he expected, with Shivaree making a bold move on the turn for home, until Averill Racing and partners' R Mercedes Boy kept going inside the 1/8-mile pole under Lopez.

“I was a little worried when that horse gave another kick,” said Camacho, who surprised more than a few people by knowing he'd gotten there just in time. “But my horse kept trying. I rode this horse in two stakes at Gulfstream this year and finished second by a neck and second by a head, so I know him and he did a great job. He tries all the time.”

Nicks, who watched the race from Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., was worried when Shivaree went wide on the turn for home. But the son of Awesome of Course-Garter Belt, by Anasheed, seemed to thirst for a victory that was his first in 364 days – since last year's Marion County.

“He's gritty and he's very competitive. He makes up for his size in try,” Nicks said. “I knew he would keep grinding and luckily he had room to get there. Very rarely is he not competitive.”

Shivaree paid $4.40 as the wagering favorite. His time was .90 seconds off his 2020 stakes record. Well Defined, the 2019 G3 Sam F. Davis Stakes winner, finished third, a length and a quarter behind R Mercedes Boy.

In today's other stakes at Tampa Bay Downs in Tampa, Fla., the 36th edition of the $100,000-guaranteed Inaugural for males, Florida-bred 2-year colt Cattin moved smartly to the lead on the turn for home under jockey Samy Camacho and continued like he'd appreciate more distance, winning by 2 ½ lengths from another Florida-bred, Lightening Larry.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Cattin's time for the six furlongs was 1:10.90. The victory lifted the spirits of Gulfstream Park-based trainer Ralph Nicks, whose father, long-time trainer Morris Nicks, died on Nov. 25 at 74 after a prolonged fight against cancer.

In the Inaugural, Camacho had close to a dream trip after breaking from the No. 4 post on Cattin, who improved to 2-for-4. “I think I got the perfect trip, because two horses (Magical Mousse, the fourth-place finisher, and Full Disclosure) were fighting on the lead and I was able to sit fourth or fifth early,” said Camacho, who also won the third race on the Florida-bred gelding Morgan Point for breeder-owner Robert C. Roffey, Jr., and trainer Chad Stewart.

“I got a chance to go inside (Lightening Larry) and when I put my horse in the clear, I thought the race was over. I feel great because Ralph Nicks gave me this great opportunity, and I want to keep it going.”

Camacho also won last year's Inaugural with Poppy's Pride. Grand Valley finished a non-threatening third.

Cattin, who is owned by Corinne Heiligbrodt, William Heiligbrodt, and Spendthrift Farm, was bred by Curtis Mikkelsen and Patricia Horth. The son of Neolithic-Adios Dawn, by Adios Charlie, fulfilled all the eligibility requirements, thus collected $80,000 from the purse.

He paid $11.40 to win.

Ralph Nicks's assistant, Sonny Righter, said hopes were high entering the Inaugural after Cattin finished a solid third in his most recent start, the mile-and-a-sixteenth Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association Florida Sire In Reality Stakes on Sept. 25 at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

“I thought he would run good today,” Righter said. “I was worried he might get shuffled back early, but Samy got him back in the race pretty quick and he caught a good trip after that. He was feeling good going into the race and he ran huge.”

Peter D provided Andry Blanco the first stakes win of his brief training career in Saturday's $60,000 Journeyman Stud Juvenile, scoring a 1 ½-length length victory over the Tapeta racing surface at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

The Journeyman Stud Juvenile, a mile-and-70-yard stakes for Florida-bred 2-year-olds on Tapeta, kicked off the stakes action on Saturday's 10-race program that also featured the $60,000 Khozan Juvenile Fillies Sprint, a six-furlong stakes for Florida-bred 2-year-old fillies, and the $60,000 Miami Beach, a mile overnight handicap for 3-year-olds and up.

Peter D, a son of He's Had Enough who is also owned by Blanco, saved ground into the stretch before overtaking pacesetter Mr. Rum Runner and drawing away to a comfortable victory in his first race around two turns and over an all-weather surface.

“A friend of mine offered him to me. The horse breezed pretty well over the Tapeta at OBS. He showed me the horse and I liked him and put an offer in and bought him,” Blanco said.

Peter D ($11) won at first asking in a $25,000 maiden claiming race over Delaware Park's main track Aug. 26, before finishing an even-fifth in the five-furlong Hollywood Beach on turf at Gulfstream last time out. The Florida-bred gelding ran a mile and 70 yards in 1:44.67 under Leonel Reyes to break through with a stakes victory Saturday. Mr. Rum Runner, a maiden with two in-the-money finishes going into his first race on Tapeta, held second, 2 ½ lengths ahead of C My Meister, the 2-1 favorite in a field of eight.

Peter D was Blanco's fourth winner from the 40 starters he has saddled since launching his training career last year.

The 40-year-old Blanco arrived in the U.S. from Venezuela in 2003. He rode 49 winners from 381 mounts during a career that included a seven-year break between 2005 and 2013.

“I've been breaking babies at OBS and I've been pinhooking. I'm still doing it,” said Blanco, who is currently training a stable of four. “I gallop. I break my horses. I do everything with the horses.”

In the Khozan Juvenile Fillies Sprint, Palm Beach Racing Partnership's She's So Beautiful ($12.20) wore down favored Sea Art with a determined stretch drive to prevail by a neck.

The Carlos David-trained daughter of Air Force Blue, who had won two of four starts going into Saturday's race, stalked the pace while racing three-wide before responding to Samy Camacho's urging in the stretch to win her stakes debut. She's So Beautiful ran seven furlongs in 1:25.28.

Sea Art held second under Emisael Jaramillo, a neck ahead of late-closing Demurely, who was ridden by Luca Panici.

Stonehedge LLC's Gil and Marilyn Campbell collected their 16th success in the FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes series Saturday when Cajun's Magic edged stablemate Dean Delivers in the $100,000 Dr. Fager at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

“It's quite a thrill,” said winning trainer Michael Yates. “They've been such a big part in the Florida breeding industry. To be a part of the team is an honor, for sure.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

The Dr. Fager, a six-furlong open-division sprint, co-headlined Saturday's 13-race program with the $100,000 Desert Vixen, a six-furlong event for fillies won by My Sassenach, kicking off the 2021 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes, a tradition-rich series for juveniles sired by accredited stallions standing in Florida.

Cajun's Magic ($15) rallied from far off the pace to win a stretch duel with Dean Delivers by a neck to complete a Michael Yates-trained exacta in what turned out to be a two-horse race in the stretch.

“After they broke their maidens, Mrs. Campbell asked me which one I liked best. I said, 'Personally, at this point,' I feel like we have the exacta. I don't know which one's the best,” Yates said.

Saturday, Cajun's Magic proved the better Yates trainee by a very narrow margin in the Dr. Fager. Making his third start after finishing second in his debut and breaking his maiden by 4 ¾ lengths July 1, Cajun's Magic settled well off the pace under Jesus Rios, as Laki Lio set the pace along the backstretch, pressed by Hope in Him, the 8-5 favorite ridden by Samy Camacho, and Dean Delivers and jockey Miguel Vasquez. On the turn into the homestretch, Laki Lio and Home in Him began to falter as Dean Delivers took command and took the lead into the stretch. Cajun's Magic launched a three-wide drive on the far turn and quickly joined his stablemate, who was the 8-5 second choice in the wagering.

Cajun's Magic passed his stablemate in mid-stretch but was all-out to hold off a resurgent Dean Delivers approaching the wire. Gold Special rallied under Marcos Meneses to finish third, 10 lengths farther back. Home in Him checked in sixth of seven starters. Cajun's Magic ran the six furlongs in 1:11.01.

Both Cajun's Magic and Dean Delivers are sons of Cajun Breeze, who was owned and trained by Yates during his racing career in which he earned $246,000 the hard way while competing in allowance and stakes company in South Florida. Believing that the son of Congrats was a better horse than he showed on the racetrack, Yates took a leap of faith and stood him at stud upon his retirement in 2015. Cajun Breeze immediately proved to be a promising Florida stallion.

“It's pretty surreal. He's throwing some nice horses. I think the best is yet to come from him,” Yates said. “His first couple crops, he had some pretty small numbers from some pretty ordinary mares. Mr. and Mrs. Campbell have bought half of him and have bred a decent number of mares to him. The proof's in the pudding.”

The Florida Sire Stakes has a storied history dating back to 1982, when it was created by Ocala Breeder and owner Dan Lasater. The six-race series has produced six Eclipse Award champions: Awesome Feather (2010 Juvenile Filly), Big Drama (2010 Sprint), Holy Bull (1994 Horse of the Year and 3-Year-Old Male), Smile (1986 Sprint), Brave Raj (1986 Juvenile Filly), and Not Surprising (1995 Sprint Champion).

The Florida Sire Stakes series will continue Aug. 28 with the $200,000 Affirmed and the $200,000 Susan's Girl for fillies, both slated for seven furlongs, and Sept. 25 with the $400,000 In Reality and the $400,000 My Dear Girl for fillies, both to be run around two turns at 1 1/16 miles.

Breeze Easy LLC's Mike Hall and Sam Ross made a considerable leap of faith when they bought a modestly bred son of Chitu for $190,000 at this year's OBS March sale for 2-year-olds in training.

Hope in Him rewarded their confidence in his stakes potential with a sensational debut victory that instantly established him as a leading prospect for the 2021 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes. The annual series for juveniles sired by accredited stallions standing in Florida gets under way Saturday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., where a mandatory payout of the Rainbow 6 carryover pool will also be held.

The Joe Orseno-trained Hope in Him, the 8-5 favorite, is scheduled to meet eight other juveniles in the $100,000 Dr. Fager, a six-furlong sprint that will co-headline Saturday's program with the $100,000 Desert Vixen, a six-furlong dash for 2-year-old fillies.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

“The owner, Mike Hall, and the fellow who picks out our horses, Tom McGreevy, did all the work [in Ocala]. When I got there, they said, 'Meet us at the barn. We want you to take a look at this colt. We like him and want to know what you think,'” Orseno said. “I went over there, and I just fell in love with him.”

Hope in Him made an auspicious debut in a 4 ½-furlong maiden special weight race at Gulfstream June 4, breaking sharply from the gate to set the pace before drawing away to a five-length triumph.

“He lived up to our expectations. He really did. I thought he was a nice horse when we bought him,” Orseno said. “We took him down here and he trained forwardly with everything he did. He's a natural out of the gate.”

Samy Camacho has been named to ride Hope in Him, replacing the recuperating Edwin Gonzalez.

Hope in Him's victory became even more impressive when runner-up Lightening Larry came back to score a solid maiden special weight win June 18. Lea Farms LLC's Lightening Larry is slated to take on Hope in Him again in the Dr. Fager.

The son of Uncaptured chased Hope in Him in his debut, finishing 2 ¼ lengths clear of the third-place finisher. Two weeks later, the Jeff Engler-trained Florida-bred graduated by two lengths, drawing clear after pressing the early pace in the five-furlong sprint.

“We knew we had a nice horse. I was pleased with his first start. Obviously, the other first-time starter left there running and never stopped,” Engler said. “I thought Larry ran on well and got a lot of education from that race. It showed in his second race, because he ran much better and finished better.”

Engler said he expects Lightening Larry, 6-1, to appreciate the six furlongs of the Dr. Fager.

“I think the added-distance in the stake will help us against Hope in Him. We'll just have to see, but I know he's doing really well,” Engler said.

Romero Maragh has the return mount aboard Lightening Larry

Stonehedge LLC's Gil and Marilyn Campbell, who have won 15 Florida Sire Stakes races, will be represented by homebreds Dean Delivers (4-1) and Cajun's Magic (5-1) Saturday. Dean Delivers won his debut by 7 ½ lengths June 26, kicking away to an impressive score after pressing the early pace in a five-furlong maiden special weight race at Gulfstream.

“I expected if he ran back to his breezes, he'd run well,” Yates said. “He kind of showed himself, with a couple others, early on in their training. We were probably pretty conservative bringing them up to their races. They didn't have a lot of fast works.”

Cajun's Magic, who finished a close second in his May 29 debut, graduated by 4 ¾ lengths July 3 at Gulfstream.

Miguel Vasquez has the call on Dean Delivers, while Jesus Rios has the return mount on Cajun's Magic.

Alex and JoAnn Lieblong's Big and Classy (8-1) is also coming off a dominating victory, breaking his maiden in his second career start by 5 ¾ length at the seven-furlong distance June 18. The David Fawkes-trained son of The Big Beast had finished an even fourth in his five-furlong debut a month earlier.

Emisael Jaramillo has the return mount.

Bella Inizio Farm's Laki Lio (10-1), a debut winner at Gulfstream April 16 by 3 ½ lengths; Arindel's Merlin (15-1), who has finished second in all three career starts; Amalio Ruiz-Lozano's Gold Special (20-1), a six-length winner in a maiden $35,000 claimer in his second start; and Joseph Imbesi's Palimonium (15-1), who finished fourth in his recent debut; round out the field.

The Florida Sire Stakes series will will continue Aug.
