Made the 2-5 jolly to follow up on a giant, 'TDN Rising Star'-worthy debut, for which he earned a towering 101 Beyer Speed Figure, Watson, Weitman and Pegram's Cave Rock (Arrogate) made it a sweep of the weekend main-track juvenile Grade Is for his late sire and gave trainer Bob Baffert an unprecedented 16th victory in the GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity.

Having graduated by a half-dozen lengths on his Aug. 13 debut, the $210,000 Keeneland November weanling and $550,000 Keeneland September yearling was squeezed back between fellow 'Rising Star' stablemate Newgate (Into Mischief) to his inside and the commonly owned GIII Best Pal S. hero Havnameltdown (Uncaptured) to his outside, but he easily made up the length or so he'd lost to shade Havnameltdown for the lead through a quarter that was posted in a strong :21.56. Dueling heads apart around the turn as the pace remained breakneck, Cave Rock and Havnameltdown pulled well clear of the remainder as they hit the stretch, but the former found extra–particularly when switching his leads at the eighth pole–and went on to score by an imposing margin before galloping out strongly. Skinner (Curlin) picked up the pieces for third. The final time of 1:20.99 for the seven furlongs breaks the previous stakes record of 1:21.29 set by future champion Declan's Moon (Malibu Moon) set in 2004.

“He's a good horse; very professional,” said jockey Juan Hernandez, winning his meet-leading 12th stakes event. “And he's fast. He broke a step slow, but then he got right in gear and made the running. I tried to slow him down some, but he wasn't having it. So I just let him go on and do his thing. When we hit the quarter pole, I asked him and he changed leads and took off. He just wanted to go. He's something.”

Pedigree Notes:

Cave Rock is the third graded winner–all Grade I winners–and the sixth black-type winner overall for the much-missed Arrogate. Like Saturday's GI TVG Del Mar Debutante heroine And Tell Me Nolies, Cave Rock was prepared for his first trip through the sales ring by Mulholland Springs, and like the Debutante victress, the colt also hails from a Danzig-line dam. Danzig also appears on the bottom side of the pedigree of Arrogate's other black-type placegetters Catiche and Caragate.

Cave Rock's yearling full-brother topped this year's Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Sale on a bid of $700,000 from Tom McCrocklin, agent for Champion Equine, and 2011 GIII Schuylerville S. winner Georgie's Angel produced an Improbable filly this year before being bred back to Connect.

Pinehurst scooted to the front in the seven-furlong Runhappy Del Mar Futurity Monday, then just kept on scooting all the way around to score a handy 4 1/2-length triumph in the 74th edition of the seaside track's Grade 1, $300,000 2-year-old championship race.

It was closing afternoon for the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club's 82nd summer season in Del Mar, Calif., and it ended as many have over the past 25 years, with trainer Bob Baffert saddling the winner of the Futurity. This time was No. 15 for the Hall of Fame conditioner who has shown an affinity with young horses that few other trainers can even think of.

Another Hall of Famer, old pro Mike Smith, rode Pinehurst and nursed him through quick fractions of :22.09, :44.77, 1:10.17 and a final of 1:23.55. It was Smith's first stakes score of the summer and his first in the Futurity.

Finishing second was Lovingier, Fasihuddin or Navarro's Finneus, who had a half length on Downstream Racing's American Xperiment.

“When we ran last time, he stumbled pretty badly coming out of there, but he still made the lead,” said Smith. “So I knew he was plenty quick. We beat a horse that day (August 1) named Enbarr and I knew they were real high on him. So I figured I was sitting on a good horse. When you ride for Bob (trainer Baffert), you ride with confidence. He puts so much foundation under them and they all come running. So glad I got to win a stakes at Del Mar; and best to do it with a Grade 1.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid=290 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid= data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Pinehurst won a first prize of $180,000 for his efforts and, added to the $42,000 he was awarded for his maiden victory at Del Mar on Aug/. 1, he now shows a bankroll of $222,000. He's a bay colt by Twirling Candy who cost $385,000 as a yearling at the Keeneland September Sale. Pinehurst was bred in Kentucky by Fred W. Hertrich III and John D. Fielding. He races for SF Racing LLC, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables LLC, Robert E. Masterson, Stonestreet Stables LLC, Jay A. Schoenfarber, Waves Edge Capital LLC, Catherine Donovan, Golconda Stable and Siena Farm LLC.

Pinehurst paid $10.00, $5.40 and $4.00 across the board. Finneus returned $18.00 and $7.80 and American Xperiment paid $5.00.

Earlier in the card, ERJ Racing and Kenney's Mackinnon outran eight rivals in the $102,000 Del Mar Juvenile Turf, finishing the mile on the grass in 1:36.24.

The winner was handled by Juan Hernandez and is trained by Doug O”Neill.

Finishing second was Aiden Butler's Thirty Four Coupe, just a nose ahead of Sierra Racing or Sterling Stables' Silver Surfer.

“He broke his maiden (here July 31) in a manner that we were hoping this day would come but you never know,” said O'Neill. “So much credit to the owners being so patient and Juan (Hernandez) being so patient with this colt. I was a little bit concerned as the race unfolded. I knew that (Optimising) was the X-factor. I knew he was in from Europe and had been working well and had great connections and was in a great spot. But when Juan called on MacKinnon and he responded I started smiling. If he stays injury free the ($1 Million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf on Nov. 5) is the goal.”

Mackinnon earned $60,000 for his win and increased his bankroll to $117,860. As the 8/5 favorite he paid $5.20 $3.40 and $240. Thirty Four Coupe returned $14.60 and $7.00, while Silver Surfer paid $3.20.

Mackinnon is a chestnut colt by Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.

Bob Baffert's odds-on favorite in Monday's GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity did little running, but it was no matter, as Baffert's 'other' colt, Pinehurst (Twirling Candy), picked up the slack and ran away from his foes to give Baffert an incredible 15th victory in the seaside oval's annual closing day feature.

Gutting out a hard-fought debut victory as a 17-10 chalk going five furlongs on this track Aug. 1, the $385,000 Keeneland September buy was made a distant second choice despite owning the best Beyer figure in the field as all the money poured in on Murray (Street Sense). Assuming command early with no riders showing much appetite for using their mounts' speed, Pinehurst dictated terms through a :22.09 quarter while just lightly pressed by the favorite as the other two single-digit odds horses, Pappacap (Gun Runner) and American Xperiment (Nyqust), comprised the third flight.

Murray came under the gun fairly early on the turn and was pushed along through a :44.77 half while making no dent on the leader's margin. Shifting out one path at the top of the lane, Pinehurst left the rail open for Pappcap, but that rival could not quicken with him as the leader drew away into mid-stretch. Longshot Finneus (Stay Thirsty) rallied down the center of the track to get into second, but was never within shouting distance of Pinehurst, who came home comfortably in charge under Mike Smith, remarkably winning the Del Mar Futurity for the first time. American Xperiment edged out Pappcap for third, with Murray checking in a dull fifth.

“I could see that Murray didn't have it today. He was struggling early on. I'm just glad that I had two good horses and one of them had it even if the other one didn't,” said Baffert. “I've been blessed over the years with so many good owners and so many good young horses. Mike Smith broke his maiden, so it was natural to have him back. He's a great rider and you give him a live one he knows what to do.”

“When we ran last time, he stumbed pretty badly coming out of there, but he still made the lead. So I knew he was plenty quick,” added Smith. “We beat a horse that day named Enbarr and I knew they were real high on him. So I figured I was sitting on a good horse. When you ride for Bob, you ride with confidence. He puts so much foundation under them and they all come running. So glad I got to win a stakes at Del Mar; and best to do it with a Grade I.”

Pedigree Notes:

With the victory, Pinehurst becomes the 30th stakes winner, 11th graded stakes winner and sixth Grade I winner for Lane's End Farm's Twirling Candy, following Finley'sluckycharm, Gift Box, Concrete Rose, Collusion Illusion and this year's GI Preakness S. victor Rombauer. He is the third foal to race out of My Meadowview homebred Giant Win, a full-sister to GSW First Passage out of MSW Win's Fair Lady. Third dam Win Crafty Lady was a GSW who produced four-time GSW and sire Graeme Hall (Dehere), GISW Harmony Lodge (Hennessy) and GSW Win McCool (Giant's Causeway). Giant Win has a yearling colt by Cairo Prince and produced a Liam's Map colt this season before returning to the winner's sire.

4th-Santa Anita, $65,000, Alw (NW2$X), Opt. Clm ($62,500), 6-18, 3yo/up, 6f, 1:09.46, ft, neck.
DR. SCHIVEL (c, 3, Violence–Lil Nugget, by Mining for Money), winner of the GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity when last seen at the races last September, made a promising return to action Friday afternoon, taking a six-furlong Santa Anita allowance in good style. Off at odds of 6-5 after touching 4-5 in the latter stages of the wagering, the bay colt was away from the one hole without incident and was settled in third position by Flavien Prat, as Canadian Pride (Creative Cause) set the pace inside of Speed Pass (Bodemeister). Going nicely in hand passing the quarter pole, Dr. Schivel was angled off the fence and into the two path in upper stretch, engaged the front-runner at the furlong grounds and fought his way past in the dying strides in an effort that will likely springboard him back into stakes company in the not-too-distant future. “We've actually been hoping he'd come back and run a race like this in his comeback race. There's a couple races for 3-year-olds at Saratoga in August and we've been planning on getting him back there,” the winning trainer said, referring to the GII Amsterdam S. Aug. 1 and the GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial S. Aug. 28. “That kinda keeps us from stretching him out. There will be a time to stretch him out, but if we can take a shot at a Grade I at the end of August for 3-year-olds, that's gonna be right up his alley.”Formerly trained by Luis Mendez for his breeders William Branch and Arnold Hill, Dr. Schivel soundly defeated heavily favored Spielberg (Union Rags) by 5 3/4 lengths at Del Mar last August. Red Baron's Barn, Rancho Temescal and Dean Reeves, but not Hill, were part of the new ownership group when Dr. Schivel validated 7-5 favoritism in the Futurity, but he was put away for the season thereafter and was having his first start for the Mark Glatt barn Friday afternoon. Lil Nugget, a half-sister to GISW Ultra Blend (Richly Blended), is the dam of Dr. Schivel's 2-year-old half-brother Barsini Red (Midshipman), third in a Cal-bred maiden allowance May 30 for Branch and Hill and Mendez. Sales history:$37,000 RNA Ylg '19 KEEJAN. Lifetime Record: GISW, 5-3-1-1, $236,000. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

DR. SCHIVEL (Violence), a Grade I winner at two, will make his sophomore debut in this allowance/optional claimer sprint Friday at Santa Anita. Placing in a pair of tries to start his career with Beyers of only 57 and 52, the bay jumped way forward with an 86 when romping to a 5 3/4-length graduation last August at Del Mar, a race that included three next-out winners as well as future Grade II victor Spielberg (Union Rags). Bought into by Rancho Temescal and Red Baron's Barn after that effort, he was backed to 7-5 in the GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity and obliged with a 1 3/4-length success. Transferred from the Luis Mendez barn to Mark Glatt since, Dr. Schivel drew the rail against four rivals in here and shows a lengthy local worktab, highlighted by a five-furlong spin in :59 2/5 (4/61) June 5. TJCIS PPs

Dr. Schivel (Violence), sidelined since recording an impressive victory in the GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity Sept. 7, has returned to light training at Mark Glatt's Santa Anita base with an eye on a late spring/early summer return.

“He's been back in training for approximately a month and seems to be doing quite well so far,” Glatt said. “We will start picking it up with him now. The first month, you're just doing a lot of jogging and legging up. So not a hell of a lot to report at the moment, but he's healthy. He grew up quite a bit and he's filled out into his frame as most 2-year-olds turning three do. We're just looking forward to putting a little bit more pressure on him now, getting some workouts into him and seeing where he can take us this spring and summer.”

After announcing his presence with a powerful maiden victory over Spielberg (Union Rags) at third asking for his co-breeders William A. Branch and Arnold R. Hill at Del Mar last summer, Red Baron's Barn, Rancho Temescal and William Dean Reeves joined the ownership group ahead of his final start for trainer Luis Mendez, a 1 3/4-length, stalk-and-pounce victory over that same rival in the seven-furlong Del Mar Futurity.

The Cohen family's Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal subsequently transferred Dr. Schivel to Glatt to focus on a 3-year-old campaign. Along with the Cohens, Glatt campaigned the hard-knocking MGSW Sharp Samurai (First Samurai), runner-up in last year's GI TVG Pacific Classic S. and third-place finisher in the GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Keeneland.

Dr. Schivel, a $37,000 RNA as a KEEJAN short yearling, was produced by a half-sister to GISW Ultra Blend (Richly Blended). He was one of three North American Grade I winners for young sire Violence in 2020.

“Playing it by ear,” Glatt said when asked if Dr. Schivel was close to breezing. “We're going a little bit slower with him this first month or two than we normally would given the type of issues that he had and the reasons he was turned out. I would certainly say, conservatively, I expect to be breezing him here by the end of this month.”

Regarding the ailments that kept Dr. Schivel on the shelf, Glatt added, “I really don't want to be too specific. He did not require surgery. He had multiple minor things going on that could've turned into dangerous things and we erred on the conservative side with him.”

The aforementioned Spielberg has since added to his resume with a third-place finish in the GI American Pharoah S., a narrow win in the GII Los Alamitos Futurity and a second-place finish behind returning champion Essential Quality (Tapit) in last weekend's GIII Southwest S. at Oaklawn Park.

“It's very exciting,” Glatt said of having Dr. Schivel join his barn. “I haven't ever even breezed the horse myself yet, but obviously his record speaks for itself. It's been nice to follow Spielberg, who he beat pretty handily in the Del Mar Futurity. He's maintained his form and that's always good to see. If you have a horse on the bench and you're paying attention to the horses that they beat, I think that gives you a very good indicator as to where your horse fits down the road. It's been good to see Spielberg holding his own.”

Glatt concluded, “At the moment, I'm just focusing on keeping him healthy and getting him back to the races. If we do that part of it, the races will be there. When we get closer, we'll map out a plan.”

During these unprecedented times of global pandemic and spectator-free stands, the 81st Del Mar summer meet wrapped up Monday with a gripping battle to the wire between Flavien Prat and Umberto Rispoli for leading jockey honors. They were tied at 49 races apiece going into the GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity, with Prat winning on Dr. Schivel (Violence) and Rispoli finishing fourth on Scooby (Fast Anna). It was the penultimate race of the meet and left Prat alone atop the rider standings with 50 wins and $2,968,918 in earnings. It marked the fourth leading jockey title at Del Mar for Prat in the last five years, who won 15 black-type events during the meet.

Trainer Peter Miller was a runaway winner of the trainer title, notching 28 wins and $1,498,472 in earnings. It was his fourth leading training title of Del Mar’s summer meet. Conditioner Phil D’Amato came in second with 20 wins. Leading owner honors went to both Reddam Racing and Hronis Racing with the former having higher earnings–$452,180–and the latter having more wins with seven.

Del Mar closed out the summer meet with an 8% increase in total wagering compared to last year, in spite of having 27 racing days in 2020 compared to the 36 days of 2019. Total wagering was $466.68 million, an increase of $34.71 million compared to the $431.98 million of 2019. Average daily handle was $17.28 million, an increase of 44% from 2019 when fans were allowed. Online wagering increased by 125% in the state of California, with out-of-state wagering growing by 65%. Del Mar was a first-time host of California’s wagering for the GI Kentucky Derby with the seaside track handing $24.8 million on the day, the fourth-highest wagering day in Del Mar’s history.

In addition, Del Mar field size increased from 8.0 runners per race last year to 8.4 runners per race this year.

“Given the extraordinary circumstances, we are very pleased with our results,” said Joe Harper, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s CEO. “The racing product was first-rate and players around the country responded in kind. It is especially gratifying that we were able to achieve positive business results while maintaining our commitment to the health and safety of our workforce and our neighbors despite the obvious challenges.”

Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal's new acquisition – the 2-year-old colt Dr. Schivel – paid instant dividends on closing day at Del Mar near San Diego, Calif., when he shook off a pair of rivals into the stretch and raced on to score by a length and three quarters in the 73rd edition of the Grade 1, $250,000 Runhappy Del Mar Futurity.

Rider Flavien Prat was aboard the son of the Kentucky sire Violence and it was his 50th win of the 27-day meeting. As it turned out, it also gave the 28-year-old Frenchmen his fifth Del Mar riding title after a fierce, season-long battle with the Italian newcomer Umberto Rispoli, who finished one behind with 49.

“He broke well, then he got a little aggressive on me,” said Prat. “I tried to give him a little breather on the turn, then when I asked him he was a runner. He's a nice colt.”

Prat was reminded the win put him ahead of Rispoli in the jockeys' race.

“Well,” Prat said, “if that's how I win the riding title, then that's great. At least now I know I can't get beat. However it turns out, it was good competition. He's a real competitor and an excellent rider. It was great to go against him.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid=290 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid= data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Dr. Schivel ran the seven furlongs of the Futurity in 1:24.16 and, as the race favorite, returned $4.80, $3.00 and $2.20 across the board. The $150,000 winner's share of the purse gave him a fresh bankroll of $197,000 after his second win in four starts.

Finishing second in the juvenile headliner was SF Racing, Starlight Racing or Madaket Stable's Spielberg and third was Drakos or Hanson's Weston.

Red Baron's Barn is the nom du course of veteran owner Jed Cohen of Encino, CA. Rancho Temescal is the racing moniker for his son, Tim, of Piru, CA. Together, they made a private purchase of Dr. Schivel from his owners/breeders – William Branch and Arnold Hill shortly after his maiden-breaking race at Del Mar on August 8. The colt ran today for his original trainer, Luis Mendez – giving him his first Grade 1 stakes win – but now will shift to the barn of the Cohens' trainer Mark Glatt.

“I loved the way he was moving (down the backstretch); he looked comfortable,” said Mendez. “And around the turn it looked like he had a lot of horse so I felt really good. And he got it done. I'm very proud of myself and the team for what we've done getting him to win this race. Now (that the horse is being transferred to another trainer) I thank the owners for giving me this horse and I've got to go back home and start breaking babies for them. I don't have any other feeling than that.”

Prat was scoring his 15th stakes win of the session, a Del Mar record for a reinsman. The previous mark of 13 was set by Rafael Bejarano in 2012.

In the race prior to the Futurity, Legacy Ranch's Big Fish triumphed by a length in the ninth running of the Del Mar Juvenile Turf. The 2-year-old colt by Mr. Big covered a mile on turf in 1:38.21 with Victor Espinoza in the tack and picked up a check for $60,000 from the total purse of $102,500. David Hofmans trains Big Fish.

Finishing second was Altamira Racing Stable's Ebeko and third was Reddam Racing's Ambivalent.

Big Fish paid $11.40, $6.20 and $4.20 across the board. He now has won two races and purses of exactly $100,000.

The Labor Day card was the final one of the 81st summer season at Del Mar. Racing will resume on Saturday, October 31 for the Bing Crosby meeting.

Dr. Schivel (Violence), making his first start for new owners Red Baron’s Barn and Rancho Temescal, glided to a 1 3/4-length victory in the GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity on closing day at the oceanside oval Monday. Made the 7-5 favorite to build on a smart-looking Aug. 8 maiden victory for breeders William Branch and Arnold Hill, Dr. Schivel sat a stalking trip three wide, went after favored Spielberg (Union Rags) entering the stretch and proved a little too tough for that rival, edging away down the stretch to give Hill ‘n’ Dale stallions a sweep of the holiday Grade I juvenile races on both coasts and giving his sire Violence his third Grade I winner of the year.

“I loved the way he was moving [down the backstretch]; he looked comfortable,” said winning trainer Luis Mendez. “Around the turn, it looked like he had a lot of horse, so I felt really good. And he got it done.”

A $1-million Keeneland September yearling, Spielberg showed the way early from GII Best Pal S. upsetter Weston (Hit It a Bomb), with Flavien Prat and Dr. Schivel keeping an eye on those two from the outside. But he had the answers when push came to shove at the quarter pole and, although Spielberg boxed on gamely down on the inside, Dr. Schivel got the job done by the better part of two lengths.

“He broke well, then he got a little aggressive on me,” Prat said. “I tried to give him a little breather on the turn, then when I asked him, he was a runner. He’s a nice colt.”

Dr. Schivel was third behind Weston while sprinting

4 ½ furlongs in his debut at Santa Anita June 21 and runner-up behind subsequent GII Best Pal S. third-place finisher Sonic Brees (Maclean’s Music) going 5 ½ furlongs at Los Alamitos July 4. But he put it all together for his third start, cruising to a

5 3/4-length victory over Spielberg in that colt’s debut effort going six furlongs Aug. 8. He was purchased privately after that victory and the Futurity was his final start for Mendez.

“I’m very proud of myself and the team for what we’ve done getting him to win this race,” Mendez, who was winning his first Grade I, said. “I thank the owners for giving me this horse and I’ve got to go back home and start breaking babies for them. I don’t have any other feeling than that.”

Jed Cohen’s Red Baron’s Barn and the Rancho Temescal of Cohen’s son Tim will now send Dr. Schivel to their trainer Mark Glatt.

Dr. Schivel’s victory gave jockey Flavien Prat his 50th win of the meet, putting him one ahead of Umberto Rispoli to earn the Del Mar riding title. The win was his 15th stakes victory of the meet, a record at the oval.

“Well, if that’s how I win the riding title, then that’s great,” Prat said heading into the meet’s final race Monday. “However it turns out, it was good competition. He’s a real competitor and an excellent rider. It was great to go against him.”

Pedigree Notes:

Dr. Schivel is the first black-type winner for his dam, Lil Nugget, who has a yearling colt by Midshipman and was bred back to Anthony’s Cross this year. The 18-year-old mare is a half-sister to Grade I winner Ultra Bend (Richly Blended).

Dr. Schivel (Violence), a blowout maiden winner last out, plus a pair of horses yet to earn their diploma make up a quality trio of major contenders in Monday’s GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity.

Backed down to 3-2 debuting June 21 at Santa Anita, the Luis Mendez trainee rallied to be third after some trouble and was runner-up July 4 at Los Alamitos. Jumping way forward in his local bow Aug. 8, the bay blasted clear to a 5 3/4-length victory, earning by far his highest career Beyer with an 86.

Returning to take another crack at him is the runner-up from that day, Spielberg (Union Rags). Selling for a cool $1 million at Keeneland September, the chestnut was backed down to 4-5 debuting for Bob Baffert, but was no match for Dr Schivel. Breaking from the rail, he drilled five furlongs in :59 3/5 (2/74) over this track Aug. 22.

Dixie’s Two Stents (Quality Road) looks to give Doug O’Neill his third Del Mar Futurity win. Narrowly bested by Baffert’s odds-on Freedom Fighter (Violence) debuting locally Aug. 1, the $60,000 Keeneland November buy clocked his final furlong in :11.49 that day and has come back to blow out five panels in a bullet :59 flat (1/58) Aug. 30.

Weston (Hit It a Bomb), a 21-1 victor over Dr. Schivel in the aforementioned Arcadia heat, backed up that result with a game tally in the GII Best Pal S. Aug. 8. He’ll likely need a big figure boost off his career top of 67 to make it three in a row.
