Bred by Bernd and Ute Schone in County Offaly, La Petite Coco provided Paddy Twomey with his first Group 1 winner when landing a memorable Pretty Polly S. at the Curragh in June.

She carried the colours of Barry Irwin's Team Valor for the majority of her racing career, including her five wins, and the man behind that ownership vehicle thinks that the 4-year-old appeals to a broad spectrum of prospective buyers.

Irwin said, “I think that La Petite Coco has a chance to become a really good producer. It's a loaded family. There's a lot of top-class horses over middle distance and staying distances in there. She should have plenty of international appeal, especially amongst the Japanese. They seem to have a wider scope than Europeans. The fact that they can race another year or two if they want, should appeal to them.”

La Petite Coco is sold as a filly-in-training and Twomey says there are plenty of miles left in the tank. So much so, the County Tipperary-based trainer revealed that he would be delighted if her new owners decided to keep her in training for one more season with him.

Twomey said, “La Petite Coco is being sold as a horse-in-training and is lightly-raced with 10 runs and five wins. She won the G1 Pretty Polly S. and was third in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks on ground that was probably quicker than ideal at the time. The winner [Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB})] is as good a filly we've seen in Europe for some time and the second [Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})] won the Oaks and at the Breeders' Cup. It was a very good race and it was probably a trainer error on my behalf as I ran her back a bit soon at York. She's not a big work horse at home and you have to feel your way as you go along with her. That was a big mistake on my part.”

He added, “After that, Barry mooted the idea of selling her and I said I'd keep her fresh. She's one you'd love to see racing on next year if the opportunity came its way. If she is sold and her new owner asked me to take her back I'd be delighted to have her back to train. I think she's a filly who has more in her. For example, Pearls Galore (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) had the best season of her life as a 5-year-old and I don't think La Petite Coco is any different. She's by a son of Galileo who won a Derby and she's five champions on her page and is very well-bred. She has two career-paths open to her and, while one will end up being her ultimate goal, if she ends up coming back into training before she goes breeding, that will be up to her new connections.”

The world-renowned green and red silks of Team Valor have been carried by a number of top-notchers down through the years but, according to Irwin, the operation is becoming more commercial. The sale of La Petite Coco is a statement of that fact.

He explained, “We're commercial now. I've done this thing [syndicated horses] since the middle of the eighties and it's fun–everybody enjoys it. But as I've gotten older and wiser, hopefully, I think that at some point you have to start taking some money off the table.

“The market today is definitely a seller's market. It's not a buyer's market. It reminds me of the early eighties. There was one Keeneland sale where they sold more than 30 yearlings for a million dollars, the prices were outrageous. It is difficult to buy horses right now. So I think if we sell horses that still have racing life in them, we'll get a premium and then we can take that money and turn around and buy some more.”

He added, “I think she should get better with age. There's no reason why she shouldn't. Both her sire and the dam side indicate she should get better with age.

He added, “We have sold a few fillies down through the years who have produced very good horses. Blue Rose Cen (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}), who won the Prix Marcel Boussac by five [lengths] is out of a mare that Gary Barber and I raced and we sold her to Fasig-Tipton. And through the years, we've sold a lot of fillies and mares that went on to produce Grade I and Group 1 winners and champions. We have a particularly good record selling to Japanese owners. Some of the foundation stock for the Shadai Stud family hails from a couple of mares that they bought from me.”

The sire of Group 1 winners Iridessa (Ire) and La Petite Coco (Ire), Ruler of The World–who will stand for €5,000 in 2023–is co-owned by the Coolmore and Al Shaqab Racing. Morpheus, who is owned by Haras do Bois, will stand for €3,500 next year.

Both stallions will be managed by Mattia Cadrobbi, Marco Bozzi and Guido Berardelli.

Trained on her first two starts by Andrew Kinirons, La Petite Coco's initial foray for this stable resulted in a 4 1/4-length defeat of the subsequent G1 Irish 1000 Guineas fourth Belle Image (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}) over a mile at Killarney last May and her next stop happened to be her last defeat as she was second in the 10-furlong Listed Naas Oaks Trial the following month. After a return confidence-boosting win at Killarney in a conditions event over 11 furlongs in July, she registered a 5 1/2-length success in Cork's G3 Give Thanks S. in August before inching out Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the Blandford here in September, where last year's Pretty Polly heroine Thundering Nights (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) was three lengths back in third. “The plan was to start mid-season and I didn't think it was outrageous giving her an Arc entry the other day,” Twomey added. “The Yorkshire Oaks, the [QICPO Champions] Fillies and Mares at Ascot and the Breeders' Cup are on her agenda, as a mile and a half is her optimum.”

Barry Irwin was keen to praise Twomey. “He's a fantastic trainer. When we bought the filly we sent her directly to Paddy, we had good hopes but we didn't know that she was this good,” he said. “Today I thought that if she really is as good as he thinks we could win it but I can't believe she hung in there, at the end she was running on fumes. She's a gutsy horse. I've backed off from racing in the United States, I'm not happy with it there. I think it will be getting better, but we've had some issues with guys taking an edge. I have a lot more faith in what's going on here and it's more fun. I've been coming here since 1971, raced a few horses and we've decided to send a few more over here. Our partners enjoy it, I've got 12 people here right now on a trip. We went to Paddy's yesterday and now we're going to England and France. I'm trying to promote to have more racing over here. I've just a few with Paddy but I'm sure we'll have more.”

William Haggas said of My Astra, who had booked her ticket with a 12-length success in Ayr's Listed Rothesay S. and proved to be one of the few who came from far back to get involved in a finish during the weekend, “She ran a great race and was probably beaten by a better one. She was a little bit wide, but I think she needs a bit of space. I didn't see her coming at Ayr and she bolted up, so I wanted to see her confirm that and she did. She wants sloshing soft and Danny [Tudhope] said this is a bit tacky. I think we'll drop Purplepay (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) back to a mile and try and find a group one race race for her, but it might be a bit difficult. She has penalties now she's won a group two.”

Rosscarbery's disqualification came as a result of Lordan weighing in five pounds light and it is believed that a malfunction of the scales was to blame. Twomey said, “The clerk of the scales told Wayne that he was five pounds too heavy, so he made him take down the saddle and take out the weights and then get back on the scales. He did that and the clerk of the scales then cleared him. He weighed him out with the correct weight and sent him out to the race. Then when he came back the clerk of the scales told him he was five pounds light. I brought the saddle from the weighing room to the filly and put it on. I was under pressure for time, as I had two runners and they took a lot of time messing around, putting in weight and taking out weight. The same saddle that went out came back in and I guess we will have to appeal it. It's a glitch with the clerk of the scales, it's an issue with the IHRB and I'd say my owner won't be impressed.”

Back at Killarney for a conditions event over 11 furlongs July 12, the bay sprung forth from that confidence boost to win by 5 1/2 lengths in Cork's Give Thanks last time. Held up early behind the leaders, she was the only member of the field able to live with Love inside the final two furlongs and made the weight-for-age and that rival's group 1 penalty count in the finial stride.

“I had mapped out a plan and wasn't going to waver, as this looked a lovely next step but I hadn't factored in Love coming here,” trainer Paddy Twomey explained. “We had taken all the baby steps we could to try and educate her, as she does what she has to do at home and I felt she was green and needed racing experience. She had a great time going around Killarney and beat good opposition well there which set her up for Cork. She is versatile enough ground-wise, but handles heavy ground better than others and a mile and a half is her thing, so there were a couple of unknowns there. Team Valor like racing, so I'd imagine she'll travel next year and they intend to have great fun with her. The [Oct. 16 G1 QICPO Champions] Fillies and Mares at Ascot has been the plan and anything after that, we'll see–it depends how she takes it.”

Wooded, who won the G1 Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp Longines on Arc Day, also won May’s G3 Prix Texanita. Toronado (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}), sire of G2 July S. hero Tactical (GB), is priced at €8,000, while Olympic Glory (Ire) (Choisir {Aus}), sire of four group winners including G1SW Watch Me (Fr) and G3 Solario S. victor Etonian (Ire) is set at €5,000. Another Group 1 sire, Ruler of the World (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) will also command €5,000.

There are a trio of sires at Bouquetot with their first 2-year-olds in 2021, and G1 Prix Jacques le Marois hero Al Wukair (Ire) (Dream Ahead)’s fee is €6,000.
