Trainer Roger Charlton, who currently holds a joint licence with his son Harry, will give full control of the licence to his son, Charlton announced on Sunday. Harry was added to the elder Charlton's licence last year.

He told Racing TV's Luck On Sunday, “We had a joint-licence and I discussed with Harry whether that was the right approach and we thought it was, you have a sort of seamless transition and the owners get to know him better. I think it's right now, as he's extremely experienced, very able and bright person, I think it's right for him to hold the licence.

“I think it's right for Beckhampton's image to have a slightly younger image going forward, so we thought at the end of this season it [coming off the licence] was a sensible thing to do. It was just a case of when it was going to be announced and I have managed to ring all the owners already.”

Roger Charlton will continue working at Beckhampton, but not in a formal training role. Charlton was previously Jeremy Tree's assistant beginning in 1978. He began training in his own name in 1990, the same year he saddled Quest For Fame (GB) and Sanglamore to win the G1 Epsom Derby and G1 French Derby, respectively. Other top runners that bloomed under Charlton's care include Tamarisk (Ire), Group 1-winning sprinter Avonbridge (GB), Thistle Bird (GB), Al Kazeem (GB), Decorated Knight (GB) and Quest For More (Ire) among many others.

“I'm not going anywhere,” he added. “I've been there 45 years really doing the same thing I've been training for 33 years and I'm not suddenly not going to get up in the morning. I like doing it. I like horses and I love going round evening stables every day and I love going out on the downs and mowing the grass on the tractor and doing everything to keep Beckhampton going.”

A new training partnership comes into force this week in Britain between Roger Charlton and his eldest son Harry.

Charlton Sr has trained from the historic Beckhampton estate in Wiltshire since 1990, having taken over the stable from Jeremy Tree. His tenure was instantly successful when sending out Derby winner Quest For Fame (GB) and Prix du Jockey Club winner Sanglamore that same season, both for Prince Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms.

“I came to Beckhampton in 1978 and served as assistant to Jeremy Tree before taking over in 1990 and have enjoyed training at Beckhampton immensely,” said Chalrton. “In that period I have witnessed some of the great horses, future stallions and mares that have changed the world of horseracing. I am incredibly proud of what myself and the team have achieved in the last 30 years. I have had a wonderful bunch of owners throughout, many of whom are still supporting me, as well as a tremendous team at Beckhampton, a lot of whom joined when I did.”

He continued, “I felt it was time to appreciate the hard work that Harry puts in to the operation, [with him] having been working in the yard since 2014. Within that period there has been great successes including Thistle Bird, Al Kazeem, Decorated Knight and Quadrilateral. He is an integral member of the team and at the age of 36 he deserves to be recognised in an industry that values youth. Beckhampton shall carry on as usual, it is a family business and Harry has been a great help to Clare and I.”

As well as the aforementioned equine luminaries to have been trained at Beckhampton over the last three decades, other notable names include top sprinter and now successful stallion Bated Breath (GB), emerging young sire Time Test (GB), and Group 1 winners Avonbridge (GB), Patavellian (GB), Cityscape (GB), Aspetar (Fr), Tamarisk (Ire) and Quest For More (Ire). Charlton also trained Frankel's first stakes winner Fair Eva (GB).

Harry Charlton said, “It's a great honour to be joining my father on the licence at such a prestigious place as Beckhampton, where I have grown up. It is a big community with a lot of history. Having been a member of the team for so long, the day-to-day running of the yard will stay much the same but I understand the privilege that comes with the new title.

“The many successes of my predecessors set a standard to strive for and, as always, Dad and I endeavour to do the very best for our owners. My father has had a wonderful career as a sole trainer and I know we are both looking forward to training lots of winners as we move forward. Quality over quantity will continue to be the mantra and I can't wait to get going.”

Training partnerships have only been allowed in Britain since May 2020. Simon Crisford, who is also Harry Charlton's father-in-law, was among the first to take advantage of the new rule when going into partnership with his son Ed shortly after the changes were put in place. Other father-and-son teams include John and Thady Gosden, Paul and Oliver Cole, and Mark and Charlie Johnston. Daniel and Clare Kubler become the first husband-and-wife training partnership in July 2020.

Jockey Jason Watson plans to appeal a seven-day ban handed down by British Horseracing Authority stewards for his ride aboard the 2-year-old Noisy Night at Nottingham on Tuesday, reports racingtv.com.

The Roger Charlton trainee veered sharply to the left after the start, and wound up nearly a dozen lengths behind the field early on.

Watson guided Noisy Night across the wire in second-last, beaten approximately 26 lengths.

A statement from the stewards acknowledged the slow start, but added that the ban was handed down because Watson: “had failed to ride the colt in such a way that he could be seen to ask Noisy Night for any form of effort or encouragement to get competitive or improve its position in the final stages of the race.”

Watson took to social media, replying: “I feel very victimized and unsure of the true intentions of the BHA. Today I done what any horseman would have done in the circumstances having been onboard a first time out 2 year old. My priority lies with the horses welfare.”

Trainer Charlton was contacted about the ride, and did not have a complaint.

Love Is You (Ire) (Kingman {GB}), trained by Roger Charlton for Normandie Stud, will next appear on the racecourse in the Apr. 14 G3 Nell Gwyn S. Unveiled at Ascot on Sept. 5, the daughter of Fallen For You (GB) (Dansili {GB}) narrowly won going a mile, and followed up with another victory, this time over seven furlongs in the Listed Radley S. at Newbury on Oct. 24. If her Nell Gwyn mission is a success, the May 2 G1 1000 Guineas is next on her dance card at Newmarket.

“Everyone seems happy with her at this stage,” said Roger Charlton. “Preparation has been so far without issues, and the plan is to run in the Nell Gwyn. It's been a fair winter–luckily we didn't have snow to hold us up. She's been ticking along.

“It's pretty miserable and cold for fillies right now, but that's also what normally happens at this time of year. It's never easy, or ideal, but it's the same for everybody.”

“I think she's developed well,” he added. “The main competition normally comes from the other side of the Irish Sea–and they've got quite a few reserves as well, I suspect.

“Her last race was run on pretty appalling ground–I don't think it's what she needs, particularly, but she did it well. We'll find out more when she runs at Newmarket, I guess.

“She dealt with the ground [at Newbury]. I don't think going is an issue for her. That was an extreme–nobody would choose to run on it, but there weren't too many other choices.”

Juddmonte’s juvenile Group 1 winner Quadrilateral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) will appear next in the Oct. 3 G1 Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot S. at Newmarket. A winner of the G1 bet365 Fillies’ Mile at Ascot last fall, Quadrilateral has not found the winner’s circle this season, but finished third in both the June 7 G1 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and fourth in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot later that month. She was last seen in action running fourth in the G3 Atalanta S. at Sandown on Aug. 23.

“The only race for her at this stage is the Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket,” said Roger Charlton. “If she is well we will be heading there. I thought she needed the race at Sandown, because she had her setback and she just blew up.”

TDN Rising Stars kept coming at Ascot on Saturday, with Normandie Stud’s newcomer Love Is You (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) swooping to take the well-contested Moet & Chandon British EBF Fillies’ Novice S. over a mile at the Berkshire venue. A daughter of Fallen For You (GB) (Dansili {GB}), who had her finest hour over this course and distance when winning the 2012 G1 Coronation S., the homebred half-sister to last year’s G2 Hungerford S. winner Glorious Journey (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) was held up early at the back by Jason Watson. Looking set for minor honours only as the 6-5 market-leader Monsoon Moon (GB) (Kingman {GB}) loomed with menace on the home turn, the 3-1 second favourite instead delivered a flourish as that half-sister to last year’s G1 St Leger hero Logician (GB) (Frankel {GB}) began to fade in the closing stages. It was Godolphin’s prior winner Last Sunset (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) who looked to have edged it, but Love Is You was flying out wide and grabbed her in the final strides for a neck success, with Monsoon Moon eventually 1 1/4 lengths behind in third.

“She will have learnt plenty from that,” trainer Roger Charlton said of the G1 Fillies’ Mile entry. “She was very relaxed early on and I was concerned the game was up when the favourite cruised up, but she picked up well and her last furlong was her best. I think it was quite a decent field and the favourite will also improve a lot, as she looked to get tired. They are nice fillies and she won going away. I entered her in her group 1 three days ago, as she’s been pleasing us.”

Aside from winning the Coronation, Fallen For You was also second in the G2 May Hill S. as a juvenile and her second foal Glorious Journey was purchased for 2.6million gns at the 2016 Tattersalls October Sale Book 1. He went on to win the G2 Al Fahidi Fort, G3 Prix Daphnis and G3 Prix la Rochette as well as the aforementioned Hungerford, GSW-UAE, GSW-Eng, MGSW-Fr, $473,188. The second dam Fallen Star (GB) (Brief Truce) captured the Listed Silver Trophy and was runner-up in the G3 Premio Sergio Cumani before also producing the Listed Heron S. winner Fallen Idol (GB) (Pivotal {GB}). Also the ancestress of the G3 Prix de Flore winner Loving Things (GB) by Pivotal, she is kin to the G1 Lockinge S. hero Fly To the Stars (GB) (Bluebird) and National Day (Ire) (Barathea {Ire}) who produced the G2 German 2000 Guineas scorer Peace At Last (Ire) (Oasis Dream {Ire}). Also connected to the G1 Levin Classic hero Age of Fire (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), Fallen For You’s unraced 3-year-old colt Turquoise Kingdom (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) was sold for 500,000gns at the Book 1 Sale, while she also has a foal full-sister to Love Is You to come.

Hollie Doyle recorded a 899-1 five-timer at Windsor on Saturday, in the process becoming the first female rider to win five races on a card in the UK.

Doyle has enjoyed a landmark campaign, earning a first win at Royal Ascot in June before taking her first group race with Dame Malliot (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) in the G2 Princess of Wales’s S. in July and gaining a riding contract with Imad Al Sagar. It was for that boss that she won the card’s featured G3 Winter Hill S. aboard Extra Elusive (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}). She also took the other stake on the card, the Listed August S., aboard Aziz Kheir’s Le Don De Vie (GB) (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}).

“When I woke up this morning I thought it could go one way or the other. I could have a good day or a really bad day,” Doyle told Sky Sports Racing. “The last few years have been awesome, but you’ve got to keep on improving and pushing more and more. I like riding under pressure, I feel with the better rides I get I like it more. I love riding horses, you’ve got to to do this job.”

Extra Elusive’s trainer Roger Charlton said, “I’m really pleased for him and for Hollie, it was a great ride. It wouldn’t be his choice of ground or his choice of track, but he did it well and I would say it’s the best performance he’s put up. Hollie is remarkable–he’s not an easy horse, he’s quite keen but she had him very settled there. The biggest work is carrying the saddle out for her, I think there must have been three stones of lead in there.”

G2 York S. winner Aspetar (Fr) (Al Kazeem {GB}) is bound for Australia’s G1 Cox Plate, having had to miss the G1 Juddmonte International earlier this month.

“If we can get him there, we’re going to run in the Cox Plate,” Charlton told Sky Sports Racing. “He has to do quarantine himself for two weeks, then they [Charlton’s staff] have to go via Sydney for two weeks before the horse arrives. Currently there are no flights to Sydney, so there are a lot of hurdles to jump. He would get there at the beginning of October and the race is the middle of October.

In addition to this year’s York S. Aspetar took last year’s G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly and G1 Preis von Europa, but Charlton indicated he thinks the 5-year-old gelding is below the cut required to win a G1 Champion S.

“If you ran him in a Champion S. here he might be fourth or fifth, he’s an honourable little horse, but it’s a sharp track out there and I think it will suit.”

Aspetar (Fr) (Al Kazeem {GB}), who won last year’s G1 Preis von Europa at Cologne in September, will make his next start in the Aug. 19 G1 Juddmonte International S., trainer Roger Charlton confirmed on Monday. After a fruitless run in the G1 Longines Hong Kong Vase in December, the gelding made his 5-year-old bow in the Listed Gala S. at Sandown on July 5 and ran second to Magny Cours (Medaglia d’Oro). He returned to the winner’s circle in the G2 York S. on July 25, but Charlton is being realistic about his charges chances.

“He could run in the Juddmonte International, [but] I think realistically we’re trying to get placed,” he said. “I think there were a few disappointments in the York S. It was a great effort from our horse–and he won well–but he’s not going to beat the Appleby horse [Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire})], he’s not going to beat Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and he’s not going to beat Kameko (Kitten’s Joy) if he turns up.

“If we could finish third or fourth it would be great. There aren’t many options if you win a Group 2. I looked in France, and you have to carry a 4 1/2-pound penalty taking on horses like Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr})- you’ve got no chance. We might as well try and be third or fourth at York.”
