Deauville's month-long racing fest is back upon us on Sunday, with the G1 Prix Rothschild the key event on a talent-packed card. British and Irish interests always excel at this meeting, so the first port of call must be the reinvented miler Rogue Millennium (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) who was able to transfer the scintillating speed she had shown over middle distances of late to this trip in Royal Ascot's G2 Duke of Cambridge S. The pride and joy of Tom Clover's stable may have found an ideal opportunity to garner one of these precious contests with the big cats playing elsewhere.

“She travels so well and it is hard to have a horse to take her far enough through her races,” Clover said. “We won over a mile, so it makes sense to stay at a mile. Obviously it was a fantastic day at Ascot and one we will always remember, but let's hope we can continue on the path we've been going on. She seems well and has been since Ascot and hopefully we have some luck.”

Also from England is Wathnan Racing's G1 Coronation S. and G1 Falmouth S. runner-up Remarquee (GB) (Kingman {GB}), who has the edge over the Jessie Harrington challenger Sounds Of Heaven (GB) (Kingman {GB}) on the Coronation form, while France's best chance of keeping this at home could rest with the Wertheimers' TDN Rising Star Kelina (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). She beat the subsequent shock G1 Prix Jean Prat heroine Sauterne (Fr) (Kingman {GB}) in Chantilly's G2 Prix de Sandringham last time and is only going one way at present.

Richard Brown, racing adviser to Wathnan, said of Remarquee, “We are conscious it is her third run in a fairly short space of time, but we are going to give her a break next, win, lose or draw. She has come out of Newmarket in great form. She's still quite green and still learning her job. She came up against Nashwa at her best last time and that is a hard task for any filly.”

An Elite Cabourg…
In the fixture's G3 Prix de Cabourg, Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's Listed National S.-winning sensation Elite Status (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) goes up to six furlongs for the first time having been found out for sharpness in Royal Ascot's G2 Norfolk S. Bad news for him is he has White Birch Farm's TDN Rising Star Havana Cigar (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) lying in wait having entered the leading juvenile conversation when dynamic at Chantilly at the start of the month. Then there is the Fabre unknown in Prince Faisal's Saint-Cloud scorer Sajir (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}), who follows in the steps of the likes of Zamindar, Xaar (GB) and Earthlight (Ire) (Shamardal). François Boutin still holds the record of nine wins in this important staging post, but one more for Fabre and it will be shared.

Sunday's Support…
Also at Deauville, the seven-furlong G3 Prix Six Perfections Sky Sports Racing for 2-year-old fillies features Gousserie Racing and Jean-Etienne Dubois's Classic Flower (GB) (Calyx {GB}), who will give further evidence in the ongoing investigation into the true merit of TDN Rising Star Ramatuelle (Justify) who thrashed her in the G2 Prix Robert Papin. Fabre saddles a granddaughter of Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa) for Juddmonte here in the Chantilly winner Cavalletti (GB) (Kingman {GB}), while Ecurie des Charmes' impressive Compiegne debut winner Minoushka (GB) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) could be another big name for the Lerners. Munich's G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis sees Liberty Racing's G1 Deutsches Derby hero Fantastic Moon (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) take on Godolphin's GI Saratoga Derby winner Nations Pride (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) who is back in Europe after his third from a horror draw in the Mar. 25 G1 Dubai Turf.

Whether or not connections of Via Sistina (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) allow the G1 Pretty Polly S. heroine to run in Friday's G1 Tattersalls Falmouth S. at Newmarket, the elephant in the room is the supplemented Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}) who could just be ready for a reinvention at the July Festival. Not seen at this trip since the 6 1/2-length Haydock novice success that earned her TDN Rising Star status, the apple of Imad Al Sagar's eye has been as far as 12 furlongs when a creditable third in the Oaks before apparently settling into a niche at or around a mile and a quarter with wins in the G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Nassau S.

While it is on the face of surprising that she is winless since the latter contest, there has been a creeping feeling that the intermediate trip is too far for her now that she has filled her substantial frame. That was no more obvious than last time, when she had Al Husn (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) beaten until tying up in the last handful of the extra 42 yards added to the 10 furlongs of Newcastle's G3 Hoppings Fillies' S. Attempts to curb her enthusiasm have proven fruitless even for the ultra-skilled hands of Hollie Doyle and it would be no surprise to see her allowed to rock and roll from the front on a track that strongly favours that approach.

“She has grown and developed a lot over the winter [and] is a really big, burly mare now,” her rider and number one fan explained. “I think she has taken a time to come to hand and has taken a few runs to get straightened out, really. It seems the obvious route to go down after her last two runs and I've no doubt she's got enough toe. Time will tell, because this is a different ballgame.”

Via Sistina Part Of Falmouth Quandary

With so many fillies going down in trip, this is a far from straightforward renewal of the Falmouth, but then this is a race which can throw curveballs such as Prosperous Voyage (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) at 16-1 last year upsetting Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}). Like Nashwa, Via Sistina is another sharpening up at a mile having beaten the aforementioned Al Husn by six lengths in devastating fashion when the rain came to Newmarket on the weekend of the Guineas Festival. That rampage over the nine furlongs of the G2 Dahlia S. outshines her subsequent triumph in the Pretty Polly and the fact is that the less give in the surface the less advantage she has.

“There are very few horses in training that can be favourite for Group 1 races over various trips and I think she has that versatility in that she stays and has got plenty of boot,” trainer George Boughey said. “She showed a proper turn of foot in the Dahlia and I think over a mile she would be equally as effective. It is a bit of a question mark coming back to the mile as she hasn't ever been there, but for her career going forward we want to try and keep some speed in her.”

Via Sistina remains the winner of the Pretty Polly Stakes at @curraghrace, and Jamie Spencer will miss the ride aboard Khaadem in Saturday's July Cup.

Is This One For The Closers?

With the memory of last year still fresh, it is hard to see anything other than Prosperous Voyage going forward again and with the increasingly free-going Nashwa here alongside another who has set the pace before in the G2 Duke of Cambridge S. runner-up Random Harvest (Ire) (War Front), this could be a case of the leaders setting it up for the finishers. Via Sistina fits that bill, but if the ground is too lively then the likes of the G1 Coronation S. runner-up Remarquee (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and Juddmonte's Sandringham H. winner Coppice (GB) (Kingman {GB}) come into the equation. There is no telling what the plan is in Ryan Moore's mind for Ballydoyle's Never Ending Story (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), another reverting to a mile after a hit-and-miss season which includes a second to Blue Rose Cen (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) in the G1 Prix de Diane which puts her in the mix.

Grand Prix

The Gosdens have a strong chance of a Group 1 double on Friday, with Lady Bamford's Oaks heroine Soul Sister (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) the fly in the colts' ointment in ParisLongchamp's Grand Prix de Paris. Partnered by Kieran Shoemark for the first time, the homebred faces Ecurie Jean-Louis Bouchard's TDN Rising Star Feed The Flame (GB) (Kingman {GB}) who was fourth in a hot G1 Prix du Jockey Club; the G3 Prix Hocquart winner First Minister (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who was beaten by Feed The Flame in the spring but who hails from the stable of the 13-times successful Andre Fabre; and Ballydoyle's Adelaide River (Ire) (Australia {GB}) who brings the G1 Irish Derby form into sharper focus.

“It's a competitive field and we're getting three pounds off the colts,” Shoemark said. “This is a tough task and it is the first time a filly has ran in the race for 10 years, so it is something that doesn't happen very often but John and Thady Gosden have her in good order and hopefully we go there with a good chance.”

Star Of Mystery Takes Aim At The Duchess of Cambridge

Charlie Appleby's opening fixture of the July Festival was a mixed bag on Thursday, so a big effort from TDN Rising Star Star Of Mystery (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) would be welcome in Friday's G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. So impressive over this course and distance in the Listed Maureen Brittain Memorial Empress Fillies' S., this comes quick enough but with a disappointing turnout of only four her claims are obvious. “Star Of Mystery came out of her recent win in good order and this looks a natural progression for her,” he said. “A couple of her rivals bring Royal Ascot form into the race, which always warrants respect, but she looks the one to beat based on her Empress Stakes display.”

Those Royal Ascot runners will not include Highclere Thoroughbred Racing's G3 Albany S. third Soprano (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), who was ruled out on Thursday due to a medication administration error, but the filly who followed her home in fourth there steps out on Friday. Amo Racing's TDN Rising Star Persian Dreamer (Calyx {GB}) is the form threat to Godolphin's favourite and trainer Dominic Ffrench Davis is hopeful.

“Persian Dreamer ran a blinder and she was the last horse off the bridle,” he said. “I think if she had been drawn on the other side she would definitely have been in the first three, but she ran very well and has come out of the race well. Any rain would be appreciated because she does like to get her toe in a little bit. She's a lovely filly and I think she is going to stay further. She will get seven and a mile next year and I think she will get seven later this year. I think she is going to be a very classy filly if we can keep her in one piece.”

Little Big Bear Still In The July Cup

Aidan O'Brien is leaving a decision on the participation of Little Big Bear (Ire) (No Nay Never) in Saturday's G1 July Cup at Newmarket until later in the week after declaring last year's G1 Phoenix S.-winning champion juvenile. One of only nine engaged in the six-furlong feature, the TDN Rising Star had been a doubt for the contest after suffering a bruised foot but his inclusion means that Rossa Ryan has been booked for his G1 Commonwealth Cup conqueror Shaquille (GB) (Charm Spirit {Ire}). The G2 1895 Duke of York S. winner Azure Blue (Ire) (El Kabeir) and Marc Chan's G1 British Champions Sprint S. hero Kinross (GB) (Kingman {GB}) are other notables in the smallest field for the July Cup since 1997, when Compton Place (GB) (Indian Ridge {Ire}) caused a 50-1 shock.

Unplaced in the G1 1000 Guineas, the Lawn Stud-bred rebounded to run second in the G1 Coronation S., just a length behind Tahiyra (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) at Royal Ascot.

Coming through in a highly tactical renewal of the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot on Friday, The Aga Khan's TDN Rising Star Tahiyra (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}–Tarana {Ire}, by Cape Cross {Ire}) showed her class to widen her portfolio which already included an Irish 1000 Guineas and Moyglare Stud S. Sent off the 8-13 favourite to bridge a 45-year gap for Dermot Weld in this prestige event, the half-sister to Rosewell House's recent superstar Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal) was instantly faced with adversity and a conundrum for Chris Hayes as she missed the break a fraction and ended up in rear off the steady pace.

With Ryan Moore content to saunter in front on Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never), Hayes opted to sit chilly at the back to save his mount's acceleration as he had with the same target to aim at in the Moyglare in very different conditions back in September. Unleashing a 11.59 penultimate split down the outer as she and Sounds Of Heaven (GB) (Kingman {GB}) made a sandwich of Remarquee (GB) (Kingman {GB}) approaching the furlong pole, Tahiyra had forged ahead by the time the latter was in full flight. Despite Remarquee's eye-catching flourish, a length separated them at the line with a head back to Sounds Of Heaven in third.

There was an inquiry, but the result remained unaltered and Siyouni had his notable St James's Palace-Coronation double. “I can't wait to ride this filly in a truly-run mile race and see what she is really capable of,” Hayes said in the immediate aftermath. “She slipped coming out of the gates, it was Plan B and it was a slow pace so she did well considering she was running at a quickening pace. I knew this filly could over-race and that I could be there too soon, so it wasn't going to be straightforward and I just had to ride her like she was the best filly and the fastest in the field.”

Tahiyra is all class as she wins the Coronation Stakes for @chrishayes24 and Dermot Weld at #RoyalAscot! @Ascot pic.twitter.com/AW6nFP0Zw6

For Weld, who saddled Sutton Place to win this in an entirely different era as a young man at the end of his twenties in 1978, this 18th Royal success was proof of the unending expertise of the septuagenarian. “I have been very fortunate in life,” he said. “She has brilliant speed and I suppose she's learning more about racing and getting more professional. I thought she won fair and square. Her sister was a brilliant racemare and this one is equally good. They are different sorts, this one has more pace. I enjoy so much training these fillies, I know the families and do my best to train them.”

Weld is set on giving Tahiyra a break now, after three tough encounters since the start of last month and having openly expressed that Newmarket's 1000 Guineas was coming a touch too soon. “I think the plan always was to give her a nice holiday, a nice break,” he added. “She's had a very busy spring and early summer and we will look at a programme for her in the autumn.”

While Remarquee lost some momentum when checked at the furlong pole, her trainer Ralph Beckett was not feeling unlucky. “She has run her legs off today,” he said. “By the time she did get rolling, the gap was closing–you don't see many of ours with a sheepskin noseband and she wears it because she is still green and has not had that much racing. I am not disappointed with her in the slightest. The Guineas was a non-event–she had only had two starts and is a slow learner! She will go for the Falmouth next, I think that will suit.”

Sounds Of Heaven's jockey Ronan Whelan said, “It was a great run. On paper it looked straightforward from my point of view and thankfully the race went like that. My filly has run a belter and I think there is more to come from her. She is not the finished article yet. She will be better as the year goes on.”

Pedigree Notes
Tahiyra's dam is the Listed Oyster S. and Listed Martin Malony S. winner and G3 Curragh Cup-placed Tarana, whose first foal was the aforementioned triple top-level scorer and Breeders' Cup Turf heroine Tarnawa. The second dam Tarakala (Ire) (Dr Fong) captured the Listed Galtres S. and was third in the G3 Noblesse S. and is related to the G1 Prix Royal-Oak hero and G1 Prix du Cadran runner-up Tiraaz (Lear Fan), the G1 Phoenix S. heroine Damson (Ire) (Entrepreneur {GB}) who took the G2 Queen Mary S. at this meeting in 2004 and that year's G3 Norfolk S. winner Blue Dakota (Ire) (Namid {GB}). Second in the Dewhurst, G2 Richmond S. scorer Royal Scotsman (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) will attempt to turn the tables for Mrs. Fitri Hay and trainers Paul and Oliver Cole.

Ahmad Al Shaikh's G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud winner Dubai Mile (Ire) (Roaring Lion) remains in the race for Charlie Johnston, as do the Godolphin/Charlie Appleby pair of G2 Gimcrack S. winner Noble Style (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf runner-up Silver Knott (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}).

The Coolmore partners and Aidan O'Brien field a quintet led by Group 1 scorers Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and Little Big Bear (Ire) (No Nay Never). G3 Killavullan S. hero Cairo (Ire) (Quality Road) is also signed on, as is G3 2000 Guineas Trial S. winner Hans Andersen (GB) (Frankel {GB}).

Third behind Auguste Rodin and Tuesday's Listed Weatherbys Digital Solutions Blue Riband Trial hero Epictetus (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) in the Vertem Futurity Trophy, Holloway Boy (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}) is one of three in the race for Karl Burke. Burke runner Indestructible (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), who won the G3 Craven S. over the course-and-distance of the Guineas, will also take part. Group winners Charyn (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Sakheer (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) hail from the stable of Roger Varian.

There is also still a chance of a royal runner, as the King and Queen Consort's two-for-two Slipofthepen (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) has also retained his entry for John and Thady Gosden.

In the fillies' equivalent on Sunday, May 7, 26 nominees have stood their ground, among them Group 1 winners Lezoo (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}), Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never), and Tahiyra (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) for trainers Ralph Beckett, Aidan O'Brien, and Dermot Weld, respectively.

Beckett has also entered G3 Fred Darling S. heroine Remarquee (GB) (Kingman {GB}), while Hugo Palmer trains the runner-up in Stenton Glider (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}). Juddmonte's Juliet Siera (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), a Group 3 winner, is also part of Beckett's Guineas challenge.

The first and second-place finishers from the G3 Nell Gwyn S. also have entries in Mammas Girl (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) for Richard Hannon and Fairy Cross (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) for Charlie Appleby. Saeed bin Suroor's G2 Duchess Of Cambridge S. heroine and G1 Cheveley Park S. third Mawj (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) has been entered. G2 May Hill S. heroine Polly Pott (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) for trainer Ben Pauling is also part of the fray.

O'Brien is double-fisted in the Guineas, as his G3 1000 Guineas Trial S. victress Never Ending Story (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) defeated Kieran Cotter's Matilda Picotte (Ire) (Sioux Nation) by 2 1/2 lengths at Leopardstown earlier this month.

Julian Richmond-Watson and Ralph Beckett tasted Classic success in 2008 with G1 Oaks heroine Look Here (GB) (Hernando {Ger}) and they are once again eyeing a moment in the spotlight after Remarquee (GB) (Kingman {GB}–Regardez {GB}, by Champs Elysees {GB}), who is from the family of Look Here, downed 11 rivals with something to spare in Saturday's G3 Dubai Duty Free S. (Fred Darling S.) at Newbury. Positioned under cover and racing a shade enthusiastically in mid division through the initial fractions of this straight seven-furlong test, the Sept. 29 Salisbury maiden winner and 7-2 chance surged forward into contention at the quarter-mile pole and quickened in impressive fashion under mild urging inside the final furlong to comfortably hold the late rally of Stenton Glider (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) by a neck, despite rider Rob Hornby dropping his whip in the closing stages.

Remarquee's triumph was a fifth in the contest, and first since 2015, for Beckett, who insisted a crack at the May 7 G1 1000 Guineas was now very much on the cards. “It's great, it's everything I'd hoped for and more,” the trainer beamed. “She was green and running away and Rob [Hornby] dropped his stick by the time she was running away from the crowd. Richard Hannon's filly [Magical Sunset] leant on her a bit, so she had Kevin Stott's stick in her face for a couple of strides. She doesn't know very much, but she will know more after today and we will certainly go to Newmarket [for the 1000 Guineas]. I think she is very good and she has got to go there on the back of that. Her mother wanted fast ground and maybe she handles this ground, but I don't see fast ground being a problem.”

Hornby added, “She seems a good mover and she has a high head carriage, which is a bit like Kingman. They tend to be a bit like that, but it doesn't stop her. It is probably what she finds comfortable and she was still running true all the way to the line. She will definitely stay further and, while you don't know until you've tried it, I'm sure she will act well on the course at Newmarket. She is not short of speed and I think a mile will be right for her.”

Pedigree Notes
Remarquee, who becomes the 35th pattern-race winner for her sire (by Invincible Spirit {Ire}), is the fourth of six foals and one of two winners for MGSP Listed Hoppings S. victrix Regardez (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}). The March-foaled homebred bay is kin to the unraced 2-year-old colt Reveal (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and a yearling filly by Study Of Man (Ire). Regardez is kin to the ill-fated G1 Prix Royal-Oak hero Scope (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), stakes-winning G2 Prix de Sandringham third Glance (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and the stakes-placed Compton (GB) (Compton Place {GB}). They are out of a half-sister G1 Oaks heroine Look Here (GB) (Hernando {Fr), herself the dam of Listed Noel Murless S. victrix and G2 Lancashire Oaks third Hereby (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}). Remarquee's fourth dam Derniere Danse (GB) (Gay Mecene), whose descendants include Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial winner Kayah (GB) (Kahyasi {Ire}), is half-sister to G2 Prix Maurice de Gheest hero and MG1SP sire Pursuit of Love (GB) (Groom Dancer) and MGSW G1 Prix Morny runner-up Divine Danse (Fr) (Kris {GB}).

Now that Indestructible (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) has boosted the 2000 Guineas credentials of Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) when winning Newmarket's G3 Craven S., it is up to the star of Andrew Balding's Kingsclere base to strengthen them further in a fascinating G3 Watership Down Stud Too Darn Hot Greenham S. at Newbury.

Relentless during a 2-year-old campaign that took in York's G3 Acomb S., Doncaster's G2 Champagne S. and the all-important G1 Dewhurst S. at Newmarket, the chestnut offers perhaps the sternest competition to Ballydoyle's pair of loaded guns in a fortnight's time but first he has to get through soft ground again as he did at Doncaster.

“Like all of these trials, he's not 100% tuned up, but he's fit and well and ready to run a good race and we will see where that takes us,” Juddmonte's racing manager Barry Mahon explained. “These trials are so tight, it's only two weeks to the Guineas from Newbury, so you don't want to go there 100% and have a hard race and leave your Guineas behind. He'll be 85 to 90% and in good form and as long as he runs a race with promise, no matter where he finishes, it will build us into the Guineas in two weeks time.”

Into The Heat Of Battle

Up against Chaldean is KHK Racing's unbeaten TDN Rising Star Knight (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), who overcame heavy ground in the G3 Horris Hill S. over this course and seven-furlong distance in October. Into black-type company for the first time, the similarly unbeaten money-spinner Streets Of Gold (Ire) (Havana Gold {Ire}) and impressive Doncaster novice scorer Theoryofeverything (GB) (Frankel {GB}) add weight to a Classic trial far deeper than its Newmarket equivalent.

Thady Gosden said of the latter, “He is a smartly-bred colt, so we decided he should take his chance in a very competitive race. It is as strong a Greenham as we have seen for a while, with plenty of smart horses in there and obviously it will be only his second run of his life. He is a good-moving colt who obviously handled deep ground at Doncaster and he'll handle the ground at Newbury.”

Is She Remarqu-able?

If the Greenham is hot, the G3 Fred Darling S. is equally intriguing despite not boasting a standout performer like Chaldean. Any one of the unexposed fillies in the line-up could burst on to the 1000 Guineas scene and one who is attracting notable support is Julian Richmond-Watson's smooth Salisbury novice winner Remarquee (GB) (Kingman {GB}). From the family of the Oaks heroine Look Here (GB) (Hernando {Fr}), the Ralph Beckett trainee has something to find on bare form but has abundant promise and will be doing all her best work at the finish. “She has done well this winter. She will need the run, but she is training well,” Beckett simply said.

Clarehaven Ambitions Clear

John and Thady Gosden are still looking for Guineas candidates and throw three at this with Godolphin's Yarmouth novice scorer Bridestones (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), a daughter of White Moonstone (Dynaformer), and Lady Bamford's Doncaster maiden winner Soul Sister (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) the ones with genuine potential. Amo Racing's golden spell could continue with Magical Sunset (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), who issued a five-length beating to another Gosden runner here in Fully Wet (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) in the course-and-distance Listed Radley S. in October. It is worth remembering that she beat Sakheer (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) on debut at Windsor in August, a point that Amo's racing manager Tom Pennington was ken to stress on Friday.

“To beat Sakheer on debut on quick ground at Windsor was impressive and she was a bit unlucky not to win the Goffs Million at the Curragh, she suffered some really bad interference at halfway. We thought she would run well at Newbury but we didn't think she would win by five lengths, so we were delighted by that. Richard [Hannon] is very happy with her and she has been showing him all the right signs at home.”

Making Up For Lost Time

In Newbury's opening G3 John Porter S., Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) bids to remind all what he is made of after a frustrating 2022 campaign. Denied a clear run at any stage by the lengthy dry spell, one of the previous season's leading lights is re-opposed by old foe Mojo Star (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) who also showed up only briefly as a 4-year-old.

“You cannot fault the horse at home. He retains all his old zest and he looks great,” Charlie Appleby said of Hurricane Lane. “We will know early in his 5-year-old campaign whether or not the Arc is a realistic target.”

In front of Hurricane Lane in the 2021 Derby but behind him in the Irish equivalent and St Leger, Amo Racing's older flagship Mojo Star split the staying giants Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in Royal Ascot's G1 Gold Cup on what was to be a notable sole visit to the races last term.

Trainer Richard Hannon said, “He's done plenty of work and been away to gallop, so should be pretty straight. But this is his first run in a while, so he's entitled to improve for it and we're working back from the Ascot Gold Cup. I'm very happy with him and while the trip is on the short side, this is a good place to kick off his season.”

Big Guns Re-Emerge At Navan

At Navan, the Listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Committed S. sees a star cast assemble in Ballydoyle's G1 Middle Park S. runner-up The Antarctic (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and G2 Futurity S.-winning 'TDN Rising Star' Aesop's Fables (Ire) (No Nay Never) and The Aga Khan's G2 Railway S. winner Shartash (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), with Royal Ascot's sprints on the horizon.

Starting the road to the G1 Gold Cup at that meeting are the impressive G3 Loughbrown S. scorer Emily Dickinson (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and fellow Aidan O'Brien-trained Bolshoi Ballet (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the Listed Vintage Crop S. which is often the launchpad for the stable's key stayers.

The 2023 Oaks contenders take in the Listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Salsabil S., with another from Rosegreen in the Naas maiden scorer Jackie Oh (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) looking set to start favourite. Out of Jacqueline Quest (Ire) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}), the Triermore Stud colour-bearer encounters Flaxman Stables' Foniska (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a daughter of the 2015 Salsabil winner Bocca Baciata (Ire) (Big Bad Bob {Ire}) from the same Jessica Harrington yard.
