Juan Hernandez was the leading rider and Phil D'Amato topped the trainer's list at Santa Anita's 43-day Classic Meet, which concluded Sunday. Tim and Mark Cohen's Rancho Temescal and Red Baron's Barn were the meet's leading owners.

Hernandez, a 31-year-old native of Veracruz, Mexico won four races on opening day and never slowed down, adding two races on closing day Sunday to give him 63 victories for the meet, more than double that of runner-up Flavien Prat's 31.

In the all-important stakes-won category, it was Hernandez leading Prat 13 to 11, helping him to top all riders by purse money-won with $4,672,374.

D'Amato won 32 races, five better than Bob Baffert and D'Amato finished with 11 stakes wins, second to Baffert's 12.

A 57-year-old native of San Pedro, CA, D'Amato earned his third consecutive Classic Meet (formerly Winter/Spring) title and his fourth overall at Santa Anita.

The Cohen family's Rancho Temescal and Red Baron's Barn won 13 races, five of them stakes.

Santa Anita's first-ever Hollywood Meet will open Apr. 21 and run through June 18.

With the express intent of making racing partnerships 'more accessible, fun and affordable,' Tim Cohen's California-based Red Baron's Barn is teaming with Rancho Temescal and Kentucky-based bloodstock agent Joe Miller to launch Rancho Temescal Thoroughbred Partners (RTTP).

Red Baron's Barn, founded by the late Jed Cohen, and Rancho Temescal have made use of Miller's expertise over the years to acquire race-ready European and North American bloodstock through both public and private channels. The fruits of the team's labor has yielded the likes of MGISW Janet (GB) (Emperor Jones), GISW River Boyne (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) and MGISW and GI Breeders' Cup Sprint runner-up Dr Schivel (Violence). Together, Red Baron's and Rancho Temescal have campaigned no fewer than 27 horses to have won or placed in stakes company en route to earning the team champion owner honors at Santa Anita and Del Mar last year.

“Before he passed away, my father and I had many discussions about the future of horse racing, and we agreed that the individual ownership model is now going away,” said Tim Cohen. “We were fortunate to own horses without partners for over 60 years, except for a few family friends. This experience taught me that winning and racing are better with friends, associates and like-minded enthusiasts.

“With that mindset of camaraderie as our driving force, Joe Miller and I are excited to announce the creation of Rancho Temescal Thoroughbred Partners, through which we expect to share my family's successful racing model by inviting individuals to partner with us,” Cohen continued. “We believe that veteran Thoroughbred owners and newcomers alike will appreciate the international bloodstock team we have assembled, and the success it has generated.”

According to a release, the business model will be simple, with one payment up front that will cover acquisition and training and the dissolution of the partnership approximately every three years ending with a return distribution. A new collaboration may initiate each year, with prior partners preferenced to limited availability. RTTP will engage no more than 10 horses per year, to be based throughout the U.S. Daily management and partnership communications will be handled by Miller.

Grocer Jack and Hannibal Barca were the highlights on an electric second day of the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale, selling for 700,000 and 500,000 guineas respectively. The turnover for the day breached the 11 million guineas mark, a record for a session of the sale, whilst the average and median again showed significant increases and the clearance rate was above 90 percent.

Grocer Jack became the equal third highest priced horse in training sold at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale when he was knocked down to Saad bin Mishraf and Peter Doyle for 700,000 guineas.

“He is for the Saudi Cup, and with that rating he will definitely be accepted for the race,” explained Najd Stud's representative Saad bin Mishraf.

“Hopefully, he will act on the dirt, we hoped we might get him for 400,000 guineas – it was tough competition and I think it was from people with the same target!

“The prize-money fund at the Saudi Cup is driving up the market for the right horses. And it is not just the Saudi Cup, there are other valuable races on that card, too – Saudi is becoming very important on the international racing scene.”

A realistic Mishraf added: “No matter what you spend, sometimes it works, sometimes it won't work. You can spend three million on a yearling and it won't break its maiden, and that is the same everywhere.”

The 4-year-old son of Oasis Dream was owned and bred by Dr Christoph Berglar and trained by Waldemar Hickst and was a winner of the Group 3 Preis der Deutschen Einheit on his most recent start, having been second in the Group 1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis on his previous start.

“That was, by a long margin, more than I expected! I thought he might make between 300,000 guineas and 500,000 guineas,” reasoned consignor Ronald Rauscher. “But obviously we had a situation of two people going logger heads, and that makes a big difference.”

Out of the Doyen mare Good Donna, Grocer Jack was consigned with a 'Timeform' rating of 117 and also caught the attention of underbidder Michael Donohoe of BBA Ireland and local agent Armando Duarte.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Rauscher recalled the background to Grocer Jack: “I bought the mare Good Donna for Dr Christoph Berglar in-foal to Solider Hollow. That foal became a stakes winner and then we followed up with Jack. The mare has done nothing wrong, she is by Doyen but he was underrated – he had a very good average on ratings, especially for his fillies.

“Grocer Jack has not put a foot wrong for us, and I hope that continues for his new connections. He is a very fluent mover, and I think he prefers fast ground.”

Hannibal Barca, fourth in the Group 1 Vertem Futurity Trophy on Saturday on just his third start, was the second highest price on the day when selling for 500,000 guineas to the bid of BBA Ireland's Michael Donohoe.

“The horse looks very impressive. His maiden victory was very impressive and I thought it was a superb run in that ground at the weekend,” commented the agent. “I don't think he may have handled it all that well, but he was gutsy and it was his determination that got him through it.

“He is still quite green and he is a lovely big scopey horse, 16.1 hands with a lot of scope to him. We think he is very progressive.”

Of the colt's new connections, Donohoe said: “He has been bought for an existing client who has a couple of horses in England, Ireland and France, and he may stay in training here. We are not sure what the plans are with him, the first thing was to get him bought and we will make the plan after. He could obviously be a horse for the Classics next year, he could have the speed for a mile but I think in time he could stay 1m4f.

“We are very happy to get him. He is very clean, he has a lovely attitude and temperament, he did not turn a hair there the couple of times we saw him or in the pre-parade ring. He is rated 111, by next May or June today's price could be good value.”

Hannibal Barca is by Zoffany out of the Galileo mare Innocent Air and his sale price was the third highest for a 2-year-old in training at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale. He has run his three races in Sam Sangster's blue and green colors, and Sangster was at Park Paddocks to watch the horse sell. He explained his feelings as he watched the colt he had purchased for £55,000 have his market value increase nearly ten-fold.

“I am still buzzing, it was emotional really,” Sangster revealed. “Brian and I buy a lot of horses together on spec and we put them in the shop window, he was one of them. We loved him as a yearling, but with the year of COVID we struggled to get people to the yard and he was one of the horses we did not get sold.

“We have a lot of confidence in the horses we buy, so we raced him; full credit to Brian who believed in the horse to take him to the Doncaster race, Brian targeted the race for him. He has such a bright future, we are obviously gutted to see him go but it was good business all round.”

Top class 2-year-old colt Maglev, who was a last start fifth in the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes for trainer William Haggas, is set to head 'Stateside' after being purchased by California-based Tim Cohen of Red Baron's Barn for 300,000 guineas.

Cohen is at Newmarket with his son Cole, and was sat alongside his regular advisor Alastair Donald and Kern Thoroughbred's Joe Miller. Cohen signed under the regular purchasing banner of Red Baron's Barn & Rancho Temescal, and purchased the subsequent Grade 1 winner River Boyne at this sale in 2017 for 70,000 guineas.

“Towards the end of the year there are a couple of stakes races in California, but it is the 3-year-old year that we are looking forward to” reported Cohen of his purchase today. “His form is excellent, he vetted well, I thought one of the better two-year-olds in this sale. Alastair and Joe were very confident and we kept going.

“We've had good success with the horses we have taken back from here. We look for horses who can handle firm ground, that is what we are keen on.”

Maglev, a son of first-season sire Galileo Gold, is official rated 102 and raced for the Kuwaiti-based M M Stables who have also campaigned the top class Alenquer in 2021.

The Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale continues at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27.

What looked like an evenly-matched edition of the Grade 2 Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes turned into a clinic on Saturday when the 3-year-old Dr. Schivel bested older foes for a third straight time in what was his most visually impressive effort to date.

The effort will certainly improve Dr. Schivel's standing among the contenders for this year's Breeders' Cup Sprint on Nov. 6 at Del Mar. He'd already earned a Breeders' Cup Challenge “Win And You're In” berth to the Sprint by virtue of his victory in the G1 Bing Crosby Stakes on July 31 at Del Mar, and Saturday's race was another “Win And You're In” event.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=197 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=198 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

It was eventful start from the inside post for Dr. Schivel, after a buckle on his rein broke off in the opening jumps. Jockey Flavien Prat grappled with the rein across the backstretch, while also putting his mount in a forward position pressuring early leader Vertical Threat, who started from the second post.

Dr. Schivel went past his foe after an opening quarter in :21.87 seconds, and he never relinquished the lead from that point. Vertical Threat remained within a length of the leader as they passed the half-mile point in :45.07 seconds, well ahead of the rest of the field.

Dr. Schivel was well clear heading into the stretch, and after some mild urging at the top of the straightaway, Prat essentially hand rode the colt to the wire, gearing down at the finish to cross the line 3 1/4 lengths ahead of Flagstaff, who took an inside trip and held on by a nose ahead of a dogged C Z Rocket in third.

Over a fast main track, Dr. Schivel stopped the clock for the six-furlong Santa Anita Sprint Championship in 1:09.44.

Saturday's victory improved Dr. Schivel's record to five wins in seven career starts, and a perfect three-for-three in 2021, with lifetime earnings of $536,000. Mark Glatt trains the colt for owners Red Baron's Barn, Rancho Temescal, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and William A. Branch.

Dr. Schivel was bred in Kentucky by William A. Branch and Arnold R. Hill, out of the winning Mining For Money mare Lil Nugget.

Stakes horses will once again double up for a Del Mar crowd, this time on Sunday with the presentation of the 81st La Jolla Stakes and the 70th edition of the Graduation Stakes. The races will go as the 6th and 9th races, respectively, on the shore track's 10-race program.

The La Jolla, a Grade 3 affair that carries a purse of $150,000, has drawn a half-dozen 3-year-olds for a mile and one-sixteenth jaunt on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course at Del Mar Thorughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif. The Graduation also has drawn six California-bred 2-year-old starters for its five and one-half furlong spin on the main track. It offers a purse of $100,000.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

The Irish horse Cathkin Peak, owned by Sterling Stables, Nentwig, and CYBT, is a candidate to be the favorite in the La Jolla. A bay son of the Irish stallion Alhebayeb, Cathkin Peak raced once in his native land as a 2-year-old, then was purchased privately and shipped to California where he won a pair of races, including the overnight Eddie Logan at Santa Anita Park last December. He subsequently chased home the blossoming star Rock Your World in February's Pasadena Stakes, also at Santa Anita, then went on the shelf. This will be his first start in nearly six months, but trainer Phil D'Amato has put a series of steady works into him for this comeback.

Double L Stable and Natalie Baffert's Hudson Ridge hails from the powerful Bob Baffert barn and is a son of one of Baffert's Triple Crown winners, American Pharoah. The colt broke his maiden with a dead-head score in a straight maiden race at Santa Anita on May 1 and came back to win a pair of races after that, including the Cinema Stakes.

Two of the other La Jolla runners — Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal's Zoffarelli and Yuesheng Zhang's Sword Zorro also first saw light of day in Ireland. The former will be making his U.S. debut in the La Jolla, while the latter owns a victory in the Singletary Stakes at Santa Anita on grass April 25.

The Graduation – like many 2-year-old races at this time of year – is a tough one to sort out with only minimal past performances to work with. Morning line maker Jon White could barely separate two of the runners, hanging Lovingier, London, and Zondlo's Rock N Rye as an 8/5 favorite, just a tick better than Lovingier, Beckerle, and Carrillo's Thirsty Always at 9/5.

Rock N Rye is a homebred by Always Thirsty who was a handy winner of a straight maiden race in his second start at Santa Anita on May 30 in his most recent outing. He's been training steadily for this return date at both San Luis Rey Downs and Del Mar.

Thirsty Always, also by Stay Thirsty, scored in his first start at Santa Anita on May 16, then shipped up to Pleasanton and captured the Nevin Stakes there on July 10.

Trainer Walther Solis conditions both juveniles.

The field for the Graduation lays out like this: Lovingier or Templeton Horses' Mr. T's Thirsty (Tyler Baze, 2-1); McMahon or Rudy's Trip to Spain (Frey, 2-1); Thirsty Always (apprentice Cesar Ortega); Rock N Rye (Rispoli); Moger, Burke or Estrada, et al's Northvale Road (Tiago Periera, 6-1), and Branch or Hill's Fowler Blue (Edwin Maldonado, 12-1).

The eyes of Luis Mendez took on a little extra sparkle Sunday morning when the subject turned to Dr. Schivel's victory on Saturday in the Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif.

Mendez trained Dr. Schivel in his first four career starts as a 2-year-old in 2020, culminating in a victory in the $300,000 Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity. The colt was privately purchased after an impressive maiden victory a month earlier and the new ownership, Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal, kept him in Mendez's care through the Futurity pending transfer to the stable of Mark Glatt.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

And even though Dr. Schivel is no longer on his shedrow, the horse's success understandably generates feelings of pride in Mendez.

“It was beautiful, lovely, the best possible feeling,” Mendez said. “I'm really happy for the owners and Mark Glatt, too. I'm glad that the horse keeps going up and up. We had a barbeque and watched the race. I got some texts from people saying congratulations. It makes you feel good inside.”

Getting Dr. Schivel to the point he did has had a positive effect on Mendez and his career.

“I'm more comfortable and confident,” Mendez said. “Trainers I respect are now asking me (for advice) sometimes and I take that as a compliment.”

There's a large wooden sign with his name on it that identifies the area where Mendez has 18 stalls in the Del Mar stable area. And he'll saddle a couple of prospects from those stalls when Week Four of the summer season starts Thursday.

Mendez has Ko Olina and Drizella entered in Thursday's featured $100,000 California Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (CTBA) Stakes for California-bred 2-year-old fillies.

Sagely, Mendez isn't about to favor one over the other. He just cites their individual characteristics and is glad that sorting out the jockey assignments for them worked out without excess stress on himself.

[Story Continues Below]

Edwin Maldonado, who had ridden them both in recent maiden wins, opted for Ko Olina, a daughter of Stanford owned by C T R Stables. That put Juan Hernadez, who had ridden Drizella in her first two starts, comfortably back in the irons of another daughter of Stanford owned by William R. Peeples.

“Ko Olina had me worried before she won here because she was really nervous and washed out before the race,” Mendez said. “Drizella had been very aggressive and kind of nervous going to the track to train before, but I like the way she has settled down and is acting now.”

The CTBA field from the rail with jockeys in parenthesis: Madiha (Umberto Rispoli); At the Spa (Tyler Baze); Lion's Lair (Tiago Pereira); Gianna's Wild Cat (Jessica Pyfer); Carmen Miranda (Giovanni Franco); Irish Wahine (Abel Cedillo); It's Simple (Mario Gutierrez); Ko Olina (Edwin Maldonado) and Drizella (Juan Hernandez).

Flavien Prat, Del Mar's leading rider, was aboard the colt for his fourth victory of the day. He now has 17 wins in the first nine days of racing and also a remarkable streak in the Crosby: he's won six of the last seven runnings of the race. Mark Glatt is the trainer of Dr. Schivel and he also was the conditioner of last year's winner, the then 3-year-old Collusion Illusion (who was entered and scratched in this year's Crosby).

Finishing second in the Crosby was Coolmore Stud, Madaket Stables or Starlight Racing, et al's Eight Rings, while running third was the 3-2 race favorite, Madaket Stables, Barber or Kagele's C Z Rocket.

Dr. Schivel, who was making only the sixth start of his career, scored his fourth victory and picked up a winner's check for $180,000 and increased his bankroll to $416,000. The bay youngster had won last year's Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity for former trainer Luis Mendez, then was put on the shelf for nine months before coming back to win an allowance race at Santa Anita in June.

Dr. Schivel paid $6.80, $4.00 and $2.60 across the board. Eight Rings returned $10.80 and $4.80, while C Z Rocket paid $2.40 to show.

In the track's Pick 6 Single Ticket Jackpot wager, there was a carryover for the seventh day in a row. The pool going into Sunday is now up to $566,809.

The Grade 1 Clement L. Hirsch heads Sunday's card. First post for the day is 2 p.m.

FLAVIEN PRAT (Dr. Schivel, winner) – “No special instructions; just ride. He broke well, then when we went across the gap, he grabbed the bit. He was running well, pretty much all the way around. He was game late. Good win.”

MARK GLATT (Dr. Schivel, winner) – “They went fast early, maybe not as fast as we thought. Flavien (Prat) rode him perfectly, gave him a good trip, and the outside post was a benefit. This is a real racehorse. He beat the olders today, and hopefully in November he'll be able to do it again. (Scratch of Collusion Illusion?) He grabbed a quarter training yesterday and he just wasn't perfect on it today. It probably would have been safe to run him but the ownership group and I thought it was best to err on the conservative side and have him run another day.”

:21.83 :44.67 :57.39 1:10.47

The stakes win was the sixth of the meeting for rider Prat and his sixth (of the last seven) in the Bing Crosby. He now has 66 stakes wins at Del Mar.

The stakes win was the first of the meeting for trainer Glatt, but his second in the Bing Crosby (Collusion Illusion, 2020). He now has 12 stakes wins at Del Mar.

Sent off the 12-5 second favorite while facing his elders in Saturday's GI Bing Crosby S., a 'Win and You're In' qualifier for the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint over course and distance in November, Dr. Schivel (Violence) jumped fairly from an outside gate and was outsprinted through the early stages, covering favored C Z Rocket (City Zip) from the second flight. Beginning to warm up to the task three-eighths out, Dr. Schivel was flushed four wide outside of Eight Rings (Empire Maker) into the lane, was put to a left-handed drive at the furlong grounds and outfinished Eight Rings for the victory. C Z Rocket raced far back into the final 2 1/2 furlongs and found his best stride too late. The race lost some of its luster when defending champion Collusion Illusion (Twirling Candy)–a stablemate of Dr. Schivel's–was scratched, having grabbed a quarter training Friday.

“This is a real racehorse,” said winning trainer Mark Glatt. “He beat the olders today, and hopefully in November he'll be able to do it again.”

A maiden winner at third asking for former trainer Luis Mendez, Dr. Schivel added the GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity before being given the balance of the year off. Programmed for a late-season sophomore campaign, he returned to action with a tough neck victory in a six-furlong Santa Anita allowance June 18.

Pedigree Notes:

With his Futurity victory late last summer, Dr. Schivel became the third of three Grade I winners in 2020 for his sire, joining 'TDN Rising Star' No Parole and Volatile. One of 31 stakes winners (11 grade) for Violence, he is the only black-type winner from a daughter of former Jeff Bonde trainee Mining for Money (Mining), a half-brother to MGSW Intrusion (Top Command), who was a maiden winner and stakes placed in two trips to the post. A half-sister to GI Clement L. Hirsch S. winner Ultra Blend (Richly Blended), Lil Nugget is the dam of the 2-year-old colt Barsini Red (Midshipman), did not produce a foal in 2020 or this year and was most recently bred to Anthony's Cross.

The scopey chestnut jumped right into the bridle and took them along at a good clip, covering the first couple of furlongs in a sharp :22.19. Galloping along on her own courage on the turn, Dance to the Music cut the corner into the lane, was a touch tardy in switching her legs, but took off when she did to take it by 4 3/4 lengths over Bicameral (Constitution). Walnut Stream Enterprises, a pinhooking partnership led by 2-year-old consignor Paul Sharp, snapped up the filly for a mere $40,000 at Keeneland September last fall. Seven months later, the long-striding chestnut was hammered down to Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal for $575,000 at OBS this past April after breezing in a bullet :10 flat.
