Coming into the race with a neck victory over a fast main track at this venue Sept. 16 after being forced to close from the back of the field, she took a diametrically opposed trip here, immediately establishing a clear lead right from the jump. Well in hand on a loose lead through both turns, she readily responded in the lane to register a 6 3/4-length victory over Gin Gin (Hightail), who got the best of heavy 1-9 favorite 'TDN Rising Star' V V's Dream (Mitole) for second.

The 14-day September meet, which runs from Sept. 15-Oct. 2, will include 11 stakes races worth a total of $3.36 million. The line-up is led by the $400,000 GII Lukas Classic for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles and the $300,000 GIII Ack Ack S. for 3-year-olds and up at one mile–a Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” race for the GI Dirt Mile–Oct. 1.

The meeting also hosts the first races on the Road to the 2023 Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks series with the $300,000 GIII Iroquois S. and $300,000 GIII Pocahontas S. on Sept. 17. Both races will also award points on the Breeders' Cup “Dirt Dozen” series for their respective divisions.

Racing during the September meet will be run exclusively on the dirt course to allow the track's new Bermuda-hybrid turf course to continue to mature to its ultimate potential. Turf racing is projected to return for the Fall Meet, which will be held Oct. 30-Nov. 27.

The Fall meet will host 15 stakes events worth $4.95 million. The meet is anchored by the Nov. 25 $750,000 GI Clark S.

Churchill Downs will host the Claiming Crown Championship Series for the first time Nov. 12. The 24th renewal of the event will feature eight races worth $1.05 million.

The condition book of scheduled races for the September meet was released online Monday and features 135 races and a record $13,791,000 in prize money, for a daily average of $985,071. Maiden special weight races have a $120,000 purse, while allowance races range from $127,000 to $141,000.

On the day that Churchill Downs ran the Street Sense Stakes, Oct. 31, a daughter of the 2006 juvenile champion and 2007 Kentucky Derby winner won the companion feature, the Rags to Riches Stakes for fillies.

Bred in Kentucky by Mark and Cindy Stansell, Sandstone won her stakes debut by 10 3/4 lengths in 1:44.18, which was faster than the colts ran in the Street Sense Stakes at the same distance.

Sandstone is the last foal out of her dam, the Seattle Slew mare Seattle Shimmer, who was 20 when she foaled this stakes winner.

Mark Stansell said, “Sandstone was one of the very best physicals out of her dam, who always threw nice babies. Seattle Shimmer had a very nice hip and would put that hip on foals, even from stallions who were a little light behind,” and due to the yearling filly's appeal on physique and pedigree, the breeders got $165,000 for Sandstone at the 2020 Keeneland September sale.

“This was a really nice yearling,” Stansell said. “One reason she only brought $165,000 was that the foals from old mares, anything over 15, are not highly sought after [in the commercial market]. If that mare hadn't been old, Sandstone would have brought more. She was that nice.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid=3 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=4 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Now a winner in two of her three starts, the Rags to Riches was the stakes debut for Sandstone, and she became her dam's first stakes winner. Two earlier foals, Sway Away (Afleet Alex) and Shaken (Uncle Mo), placed in Grade 2 company. Sway Away was second in the G2 Best Pal, San Vicente, and San Carlos; Shaken was third in the G2 Rachel Alexandra.

Yet, they almost never were.

The dam of these three talented stakes horses, as well as other good winners, was one of the last foals by Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew (by Bold Reasoning), himself a foal of 1974. The near-black champion had problems with his neck vertebrae late in life that required surgery and curtailed the last years of his stud career.

A foal of 1999, Seattle Shimmer was bred in Kentucky by Albert Finney, and Mickey and Karen Taylor. She and her stakes-winning dam received the best of care, but when the filly was born, she was “severely contracted as a foal,” said Kentucky horseman Bob Sliger, who spent many years with the Eaton Farms yearling division.

Contracted tendons are not rare among Thoroughbred foals, and the condition's name accurately describes the problem. A foal's long tendons are tightly contracted, rather than loose and flexible, when the foal is born. This can cause considerable problems with standing and nursing, and if not addressed appropriately and as early as possible, the malady has the potential to cripple a foal for life.

Seattle Shimmer, however, was in good hands.

Sliger continued: “We used PVC pipe to help get her legs straightened out, and it helped her a lot. She was broken but never went into training. That's when they had just lost Seattle Slew, and they went out of the horse business. When they did that, they gave the mare to me.”

For Sliger and former Eaton Farms manager Billy Tillery, Seattle Shimmer bred some very nice prospects, including Sway Away.

Sliger recalled that “Mark had bought three foals out of the mare off me and was crazy about Seattle Shimmer. She was a beautiful mare, a kind and lovely mare. Just a sweetheart, and Mark really wanted the mare.”

Stansell said he “was buying weanlings to resell as yearlings, and I got to know Bob after buying the third foal out of the mare, went and bought mare and the foal at side, who turned out to be Sway Away.

“She is buried in my back yard, he continued. “I have 87 acres, but buried her there.”

To produce Sandstone, Stansell “bred her to Street Sense, and this was one of the very best physicals out of the mare.”

In addition to the other foals out of Seattle Shimmer, Stansell sold, then repurchased and raced Shaken, and the half-sister to Sandstone “has an exceptional Vino Rosso foal in Book 2 of the November sale,” the breeder concluded.

On a card focused on the stars of tomorrow, Sandstone showed she is one to watch with her multi-length win in the Rags to Riches at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. The daughter of Street Sense showed a stunning turn of foot, pulling away from a challenging Yuugiri with ease to earn her second career win and her first stakes.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=291 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid= data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

In a short field of four, Sandstone went straight to the lead, putting a length between her and Yuugiri around the first turn. She maintained that lead down the backstretch, with Yuugiri mounting her challenge around the far turn.

Tyler Gaffalione and Yuugiri pulled within a head of Sandstone on the turn, hitting the stretch nearly even with Sandstone. Under the Twin Spires, Yuugiri got her nose in front briefly, but Sandstone rallied on her inside, finding another gear and kicking away easily. At the wire, Sandstone was 10 3/4 lengths in front, with Yuugiri, Mama Rina, and Manasota Sunset rounding out the order of finish.

The final time for the 1 1/16 miles was 1:44.18. Find this race's chart here.

Sandstone paid $7.40, $3.00, and $2.10. Yuugiri paid $2.20 and $2.10. Mama Rina paid $2.10.

Bred in Kentucky by Mark Stansell and Cindy Stansell, Sandstone is out of the Seattle Slow mare Seattle Shimmer. Owned by Susan Moulton, the 2-year-old filly is trained by Kenny McPeek. She was consigned by Gainesway and sold to Kenneth McPeek, agent for $165,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. With her win in the Rags to Riches, the filly has two wins in three starts, for career earnings of $199,960.

Trainer Dale Romans' promising duo of Iroquois Stakes (Grade 3) third-place finisher Red Knobs, along with impressive maiden winner Howling Time, top an ultra-competitive field of nine 2-year-olds that were entered in Sunday's ninth running of the $200,000 Street Sense at Churchill Downs.

Sunday's 17th annual “Stars of Tomorrow I” program, which features all 2-year-old races, kicks off the 21-day Fall Meet. First post is 1 p.m. (all times Eastern). The 1 1/16-mile Street Sense shares the Sunday spotlight with the $200,000 Rags to Riches, which will also be run at 1 1/16 miles for 2-year-old fillies. The Street Sense was carded as Race 10 at 5:36 p.m. while the Rags to Riches will go as Race 5 at 3:03 p.m.

Inaugurated in 2005, Churchill Downs' “Stars of Tomorrow” programs have helped launched the careers of numerous graded stakes winners, including more than 50 future Grade 1 winners led by Horse of the Year champions Gun Runner (2017) and Rachel Alexandra (2009), Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver (2010), Kentucky Oaks winners Rachel Alexandra (2009), Believe You Can (2012) and Monomoy Girl (2018), Preakness winners Shackleford (2011), War of Will (2019) and Swiss Skydiver (2020), Belmont winner Creator (2016) as well as 2012 Breeders' Cup Classic and 2013 Stephen Foster hero Fort Larned and 2013 champion 3-year-old Will Take Charge.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Albaugh Family Stables' Howling Time, a 2-year-old son of Not This Time, broke his maiden on Sept. 25 at Churchill Downs by 1 ½ lengths in a six-furlong maiden special weight contest. The $200,000 purchase from the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale stopped the teletimer in 1:10.15 to earn a stout 91 Brisnet Speed Rating. Howling Time will be ridden by Joe Talamo from post position No. 6.

Meanwhile, his stablemate, Jim Bakke and Gerald Isbister's Red Knobs, was only defeated by one-length in the $300,000 Iroquois to Major General and Tough to Tame. The chestnut son of Union Rags broke his maiden this summer at Ellis Park by an impressive 6 ¼ lengths. He'll be ridden by James Graham from post 9.

Among the other top contenders in the Street Sense field are Silverton Hill's Kentucky Downs Juvenile Sprint winner Red Danger; Paradise Farms Corp., Skychai Racing and David Staudacher's Kentucky Downs Juvenile Mile runner-up Kiss the Sky; Lucky Seven Stable's Ellis Park Juvenile runner-up Lucky Boss; and Daniel Alonso's 10 ½-length maiden breaker Skippylongstocking.

The complete field for the Street Sense from the rail out (with jockey and trainer): Guntown (Ricardo Santana Jr., Steve Asmussen); Luni Sima (Adam Beschizza, Jack Sisterson); Skippylongstocking (Tyler Gaffalione, Saffie Joseph Jr.); Red Danger (Julien Leparoux, Brian Lynch); Kiss the Sky (Corey Lanerie, Mike Maker); Howling Time (Talamo, Romans); Lucky Boss (Brian Hernandez Jr., Kenny McPeek); Sport Pepper (Florent Geroux, Kerry Zavash); and Red Knobs (Graham, Romans).

The Street Sense and Rags to Riches both serve as the local prep races to the $400,000 Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) and $400,000 Golden Rod (G2), respectively, as part of the “Stars of Tomorrow II” program on Saturday, Nov. 27.

After Sunday's opener, live racing will be conducted on a Wednesday-Sunday schedule with dark days on Mondays and Tuesdays. Most race days feature 10 live races. There will be 11 on Sunday's opener plus a trio of Saturdays: Nov. 6, 13 and 20. Twelve-race cards are scheduled over the final four days, Nov. 25-28.

Meanwhile, Susan Moulton's nine-length maiden winner Sandstone, along with Sekie and Tsunebumi Yoshihara's 7 ¼-length debut hero Yuugiri, headline a compact field of five 2-year-old fillies that were entered in Sunday's ninth running of the $200,000 Rags to Riches at Churchill Downs.

The Rags to Riches, run at 1 1/16 miles, will go as Race 5 of 11 with a post time of 3:03 p.m.

Sandstone, a daughter of Street Sense, broke her maiden on Oct. 3 at Churchill Downs over a “sloppy” surface. The Kenny McPeek-trained filly covered the one-mile distance in 1:37.43 and earned a 90 Brisnet Speed Rating.

Two weeks prior to Sandstone's open-length maiden score, the Rodolphe Brisset-trained Yuugiri cruised to a decisive victory. The homebred-daughter of Shackleford completed the six-furlong maiden special weight contest in 1:09.55 and earned a 95 Brisnet Speed Rating.

Brian Hernandez Jr. will have the return mount on Sandstone from post No. 3 while September Meet leading rider Tyler Gaffalione will pilot Yuugiri from post 4.

The Rags to Riches field also includes Harold Lerner, AWC Stables, Scott Akman, Nehoc Stables, Paul Braverman and Magdalena Racing's Pocahontas Stakes (G2I) runner-up Mama Rina; Joe Sharp's Ellis Park Debutante third-place finisher Manasota Sunset; and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners' Jessamine Stakes (G2) fourth-place finisher Dressed.

Here's the field for the Rags to Riches in order of post position (with jockey and trainer): Manasota Sunset (Ricardo Santana Jr., Sharp); Mama Rina (Julien Leparoux, Kenny McPeek); Sandstone (Hernandez, McPeek); Yuugiri (Gaffalione, Brisset); Dressed (Florent Geroux, Catalano).

Coach remained unbeaten in three starts when she drew away from Lady Traveler in deep stretch to win Sunday's eighth running of the $98,000 Rags to Riches Overnight Stakes for 2-year-old fillies by 2 ½ lengths on opening day at Churchill Downs.

Ridden by Florent Geroux and trained by Brad Cox, Coach ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.14 while making her two-turn debut. Previously she recorded dominant victories in sprints at Indiana Grand, including a 4 ¼-length maiden win and a first-level allowance score by 9 ¾ lengths.

Malibu Bird and Salty as Can Be dictated the Rags to Riches pace as they led the field of nine 2-year-old fillies through opening splits of :23.44, :47.98 and 1:12.98. Coach tracked from third in the clear down the backstretch and took over the lead leaving the far turn. Lady Traveler rallied into contention down the stretch but was no match for Coach who drew clear late.

“We sat a really good trip all along,” said Geroux, who has won the Rags to Riches in three of the last four years (note: the other wins came with Monomoy Girl in 2017 and Mother Mother in 2018). “It was her first time at two turns and she really handled the extra distance well. We galloped out really strong, too.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Coach paid $6.80, $4.40 and $3.40 as the second betting choice. Lady Traveler, ridden by Joe Talamo, returned $5.60 and $4.20. It was another 1 ½ lengths back in third to Oliviaofthedesert, who paid $4.20 under Brian Hernandez Jr.

Dash to the Top, 2-1 favorite Midnight Ballerina, Torsie's Charm, Orsetto, Malibu Bird and Salty as Can Be completed the running order.

Sunday's payday was worth $58,440 and Coach improved her record to 3-3-0-0—$96,540 for owner Rick Kueber's Kueber Racing LLC.

By Commissioner, Coach is a Kentucky-bred filly out of the Exchange Rate mare And Stay Out. She was bred by Three Lyons Racing.

“With the pedigree, we thought she would like the extra distance,” Cox said. “With a horse making their start around two turns for the first time, you never really know how they'll handle the extra ground. She showed today that she loved it.”

Sunday's race is named in honor of Derrick Smith and Michael Tabor's 2007 Kentucky Oaks (GI) winner. Three years ago, Michael Dubb and Monomoy Stables' Monomoy Girl, also trained by Cox, cruised to a 6 ½-length score in the Rags to Riches prior to her triumph in the 2018 Kentucky Oaks.

Coach took her record to a perfect three-for-three with an authoritative victory in the Rags to Riches S. at Churchill Downs Sunday. The dark bay filly, a 4 1/2-length debut winner sprinting six furlongs at Indiana Grand Aug. 10, romped home by 9 3/4 lengths going 5 1/2 furlongs at that oval in a Sept. 15 allowance contest. Hustled up to keep pace with the early frontrunners, Coach was a tracking third down the backstretch. She strode up to challenge for the lead with a three-wide move on the far turn and took control into the lane, turned back Lady Traveler late and pulled away in the final sixteenth. And Stay Out has a yearling colt by Klimt and a weanling filly by Collected. She was bred back to Enticed this year. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
