More than $100,000 was raised during this year's Breeders' Cup Pledge, New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program announced Monday. That total was driven by four horses with pledge connections–Fierceness (City of Light), Unquestionable (FR) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), Goodnight Olive (Ghostzapper) and Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn})–winning their races on Future Stars Friday and Championship Saturday.

Additional pledges are still coming in as of Monday and final donations are being tallied. Now in its 14th year, the Pledge has raised more than a million dollars, with 100 percent of funds going directly to support the program's rehabilitation, retraining and rehoming efforts, which serves more than 500 retired racehorses a year.

“I'm thrilled to support the Breeders' Cup Pledge as it's a great way to raise the much-needed awareness and funds for New Vocations and their aftercare efforts,” shared owner Mike Repole. I'm a strong advocate for ensuring my retired racehorses receive proper aftercare within my control whether it's to an adoption program or a retirement facility. These amazing athletes mean so much to us and always deserve the best. We all need to do more, including me. Thoroughbred aftercare will be a major focus of my newly formed NTA.”

In addition to Repole Stable, winning connections include Coolmore and Partners (Unquestionable (FR) and Auguste Rodin (IRE)) and Team Hanley (Goodnight Olive). This year's pledge participants also included Jena Antonucci, Bob and Jill Baffert, Blue Rose Farm, Bradley Thoroughbreds, Peter M. Brant, Cheyenne Stables, D.J. Stable, eFive Racing Thoroughbreds, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Mark B. Grier, Graham Motion, Joe R. Peacock, Jr., Pin Oak Stud, Todd Pletcher, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, J. Kirk and Judy Robison, SF Racing, Siena Farm, Spendthrift Farm, Starlight Racing, Stonestreet Stables, Three Diamonds Farm, Wertheimer et Frere, West Point Thoroughbreds, Whisper Hill Farm and WinStar Farm.

“We feel very blessed to have 56 horses with pledging connections run during the two days of Championship races,” said Anna Ford, New Vocations Thoroughbred Program Director. “The funds raised are greatly needed as we have seen a 20% increase in the number of horses we have taken in compared to this time last year.”

This year's event–held concurrently with the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event, which will take place at the nearby Kentucky Horse Park–will be part of the nation's oldest and largest racehorse adoption charity's year-long 30th Anniversary celebration.

“We can't wait to welcome guests back to New Vocations at Mereworth Farm,” said Anna Ford, New Vocations' Thoroughbred Program Director. “We've made a few exciting changes to the event this year and this Open Barn & BBQ will be the best one yet.”
Guests can expect an expanded educational program featuring live demos by: retired GI Kentucky Oaks and Breeders' Cup-winning jockey, aftercare advocate and OTTB trainer Rosie Napravnik; New Vocations' Lexington Trainer and Facility Director Leandra Cooper; and Veterinarian Dr. Sarah Escaro.

Jen Roytz–manager of Brownstead Farm, past executive director of the Retired Racehorse Project and an OTTB owner and rider–will moderate the sessions. Attendees will have the chance to meet adoptable horses, tour the facility's barns, enjoy live music from Trippin' Roots and partake in a celebratory 30th Anniversary dessert. Guests will be able to enjoy delicious delights from four food trucks and a boutique bar (two drinks included with each ticket), featuring the event's signature Peach Kentucky Mule or other selections from Jackson Family Wines, Braxton Brewing, Pinhook Bourbon and Tito's Handmade Vodka.

Guests can also bid on exciting items and experiences (including a trip to Africa) in the always-popular silent auction and–new for 2022–will have the chance to try their luck in a wine pull. All proceeds from these fundraisers will go directly to support New Vocations' mission to rehab, retrain and rehome retired racehorses.

Gates will open at 3:00 p.m. with the first demo getting underway at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased here ($30 for adults, $10 for children 12 and under). Proceeds from the event will benefit New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

The Retired Racehorse Project (RRP) has expanded the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) Makeover Marketplace catalogue to include adoptable Thoroughbred Makeover prospects eligible for the 2022 competition. The catalogue also will continue to feature sport horse prospects who are offered for sale by their trainers at the conclusion of the Makeover process.

The expanded catalog is expected to include hundreds of transitioned and restarted Thoroughbreds, most of which will compete at the 2020-21 Thoroughbred Makeover this October at the Kentucky Horse Park. Up to 100 off-track prospects from non-profit organizations will be listed as well, all of which will be 2022 Makeover-eligible.

“The ASPCA Makeover Marketplace is a premier horse shopping and adoption opportunity for equestrians looking for well-started sport horse prospects,” said executive director Jen Roytz. “The Makeover provides the ultimate venue to browse multiple prospects listed in the catalog, watch them perform in competition, ride prospects, and have horses vetted on-site.”

Makeover graduates have traditionally undergone extensive preparation for the event, with former graduates having gone on to successful careers in eventing, hunter/jumper, field hunter, western performance, pleasure, and trail riding.

The catalogue will be printed as an insert in the fall issue of the RRP's Off-Track Thoroughbred Magazine, with a digital catalogue available at TBMakeover.org after August 15. Listing organizations must pre-register by July 10; horse registration will open July 15.

Former jockey and horse aftercare advocate Rosie Napravnik will join Fair Grounds host Joe Kristufek on the live feed for “New Vocations Day at the Races” at the New Orleans venue, the track announced on Tuesday. Napravnik, who won four titles at the Fair Grounds, will help build awareness, promote success stories, and inspire donations for Thoroughbred aftercare throughout the racing card.

“Rosie is one of our favorites and it's great to have her back at the Fair Grounds to help shed light on such an important cause and to share her valuable insight with the fans,” said Fair Grounds Senior Director of Racing Jason Boulet.

“Before and after my riding career, I've been exposed to a lot of the other things that horses can do, and that's a big part of the reason why I'm so passionate about it and why it's so important to me,” Napravnik said about Thoroughbred aftercare. “After riding so many of those horses and seeing how much they put out for us on the racetrack, it's just something I can't avoid making a part of my life.”

To make a financial donation to the Louisiana chapter of New Vocations and support the Fair Grounds Day at the Races, please go to https://horseadoption.com/donate.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program, the largest racehorse adoption charity in the United States, received the 2020 Lavin Cup from the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP).

Known as the AAEP's equine welfare award, the Lavin Cup recognizes a non-veterinary organization or individual that has distinguished itself through service to improve the welfare of horses. New Vocations was recognized Dec. 9 during the AAEP's 2020 Annual Convention & Trade Show, held virtually.

Founded in 1992, New Vocations' mission to rehabilitate, retrain and rehome retired racehorses has led to the placement of over 7,000 individuals, with nearly 500 retirees served by the program each year. With facilities in five states—Kentucky, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Louisiana—New Vocations serves over 40 racetracks, working directly with owners and trainers in need of equine aftercare options.

“New Vocations has a longstanding commitment to the health and welfare of the equine athletes that deserve help in transitioning to a healthy and productive second career,” said co-nominators Dr. Jeff Berk and Dr. Wesley Sutter. “In every sense, they have partnered with us, the equine veterinarians who seek the same goals for our patients.”

Despite COVID-19-related shutdowns in the spring that prevented potential adopters from visiting New Vocations' farms in person, the charity found suitable homes for a record number of horses in April and May through social media.

Over 50 connections of horses running in Friday and Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup races have pledged a portion of their runners’ earnings to New Vocations, the largest racehorse adoption program in the country.

Now in its 11th year, the annual pledge has raised over $650,000, with 100 percent of funds raised supporting the program’s rehabilitation, retraining and rehoming efforts.

“We pledged for two reasons: We love the New Vocations model of repurposing these magnificent Thoroughbreds for a new life, and it’s the right thing to do,” said owner B. Wayne Hughes of Spendthrift Farm.

“The New Vocations program is the best,” said owner Barbara Banke of Stonestreet Stables. “They excel at assessing the individual horse and placing them in the most suitable new homes. Some of their success stories with our retired racehorses are truly inspiring.”

Pledge participants to date include Albaugh Family Stables, Bass Stables, Bethlehem Stables LLC, Bob Baffert, Breeze Easy LLC, China Horse Club Inc, CJ Thoroughbreds, Michael Dubb, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, eFive Racing, John and Diane Fradkin, Gatsas Stables, Tim Hamm, Harrell Ventures LLC, Head of Plains Partners LLC, Heider Family Stables, R.A. Hill Stables, Michael Hui, Klaravich Stables, Robert V. LaPenta, LNJ Foxwoods, Madaket Stables LLC, Richard Mandella, Michael McCarthy, Peter Miller, Monomoy Stables, H. Graham Motion, MyRacehorse Stable, Todd Pletcher, Repole Stable, River Oak Farm, Kirk and Judy Robison, Sackatoga Stable, Domenic Savides, SF Racing LLC, Siena Farm, Jack Sisterson, Spendthrift Farm, Starlight Racing, Stonestreet Stables, Damon Thayer, The Elkstone Group LLC, Three Diamonds Farm, Wertheimer et Frere and WinStar Farm.

“Breeders’ Cup is a very exciting time of year for our industry and a great opportunity for New Vocations to share its commitment to aftercare with a world-wide audience,” said Anna Ford, the New Vocations Thoroughbred Program Director. “We are thankful for the large number of owners and trainers who are pledging their support of New Vocations mission. Funds raised through the Pledge are vital as the number of horses needing our services this year continues to grow. The Pledge is a win-win situation for all involved, most importantly the horses we all love so much.”

In its 28 years, New Vocations has placed over 7,000 racehorses, and currently serves nearly 500 annually. With facilities in Kentucky, Ohio, Louisiana, Pennsylvania and New York, New Vocations serves over 40 racetracks, working directly with owners and trainers in need of equine aftercare options

New Vocations will continue to seek pledges from connections until Nov. 7. All pledge information can be found at www.newvocations.org/donate.

New Vocations has officially launched its annual Breeders' Cup Pledge. The program is seeking owners and trainers of Breeders' Cup contenders to pledge a percentage of their Championship earnings to support its mission to rehabilitate, retrain and rehome retired racehorses. This will be the 11th year for the fundraiser, which has raised over $650,000 to date.

“The need for our services continues to grow each year,” said Anna Ford, New Vocations Thoroughbred Program Director. “This year, in particular, has been very challenging due to the obstacles presented by COVID-19. Over the last decade, we have grown this Pledge into an extremely important fundraiser and we had our most successful year yet in 2019, raising over $130,000. We hope to have another record-breaking year in 2020 and are so grateful for the generous contributions of our donors who have continued to support and value our program. The Pledge is a great way for owners and trainers to give back and support New Vocations' aftercare efforts.”

Last year, over 50 Championship contenders had owners and/or trainers who pledged a percentage of their Breeders' Cup earnings. Of those, Vino Rosso, British Idiom, Sharing, Covfefe, Uni and Bricks And Mortar were victorious in their Championship races.

This year, New Vocations hopes to grow the list of pledgers to ensure yet another successful event and help raise the much-needed funding for daily operations that ultimately help retired racehorses transition into new homes and careers.

New Vocations will continue to seek pledges from owners and trainers until Nov. 5. All Pledge information can be found here or by contacting anna@horseadoption.com or andrea@horseadoption.com.
