One of the early pacesetters in this straight-course test, Frost At Dawn avoided the majority of the field while glued to the far rail. Shrugging off all challengers, she scampered home a good-looking winner, with fellow filly Star Of Mystery emerging from the field to take second. Logo Hunter (Ire) (Brazen Beau {Aus}), who was toting 12 more pounds than his sophomore challengers, was another 1 3/4 lengths back in third. Frost At Dawn is now the 26th stakes winner and ninth group/graded winner for her Darley sire. Her victory has punched a ticket in the G1 Al Quoz Sprint, where she will be required to go up in trip to 1200 metres at the end of the month.

“I had the luck to have a good draw today, so I just played my card,” said Barzalona after breaking the track record in a time of 55:41. “It's the first time I've ridden her. She's fast and I think she would travel even better over six furlongs [1200metres].”

She broke her maiden at second asking in England last November, but then has failed to win versus Manama Gold in December and January, or Cinderella's Dream in February. Tried in the Dubai Trophy, a conditions race over 1200 metres on grass on Feb. 9, the grey found only Great Truth (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) too good when a head back in second.

PRINCIDENT (World of Trouble), a $75,000 Keeneland September acquisition by Powerstown Stud, caught the eye during the under-tack preview for this year's Arqana May Breeze-Up Sale (see below) and was knocked down to Rabbah Bloodstock for €210,000, the second-priciest of 30 juveniles reported as sold from the first crop of his sire (by Kantharos). Racing in the colors of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed al Maktoum, the Feb. 12 produce is out of the MSP Truth in the Lies (Hold Me Back), a half-sister to five-time New Jersey-bred stakes winner Trueamericanspirit (Is It True).

Fayadh (Liam's Map) is the latest foal to make the races out of Class Included (Include), whose 11 career stakes successes includes the GIII Ballerina S. at Hastings Park. A $100,000 KEESEP purchase by former jockey turned bloodstock agent Ted Durcan/Longways, the chestnut colt fetched €148,148 from owner Ali Haddad at the Goffs Dubai Breeze-Up at Meydan this past March (see below). “He just looked very effective over a mile and a mile-and-one at Meydan and he has a lot of speed,” explained Ed Crisford.

“I'm not saying he doesn't stay the 10 furlongs, it's just that we felt at Santa Anita a mile may play to his strengths more.”

An impressive winner going a mile in the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge R1 in January, the 6-year-old stretched out successfully to take Meydan's main World Cup prep in February before finishing runner-up in the 1 1/4-mile marquee test for route horses. Given time off following that effort, he returned to be second in the 8 1/2-furlong GIII Durham Cup over Woodbine's Tapeta surface Oct. 7.

Having bounced out of his North American debut, the Rabbah Bloodstock-owned runner will have one final piece of work before departing for California.

“It was like a racecourse gallop to be honest, but he has come out of it super well,” reflected Crisford. “He's had that run now and has come out of it fresh and well and looks great. He is going to have a good gallop under James Doyle before he leaves and hopefully, that will be him set for the race next weekend.

“James knows him and what he can do and what is under the bonnet. He rides the American tracks really well and it should be perfect.”

According to Crisford, G2 Rockfel S. winner Carla's Way (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) will accompany Algiers on the trip Stateside. The juvenile filly is expected to start in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

“She is in good form and won well at Newmarket,” added Crisford. “She can quicken off a quick pace which is what you need in America and that track should suit her well, a two-turn mile on quick ground.”

“We opted not to go for the Fillies' Mile because that mile at Newmarket on soft ground wouldn't really be for her, but she's got a lot of ability and is progressing with each run and looks like a filly who could be a lot of fun for the future.”

Horses owned by Rabbah Bloodstock were offered by a variety of agents and filled the top three spots, with wildcard entry Midnight Lion (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) (lot 79) bringing 85,000gns from Nick Taylor, assistant to Tom Malone Bloodstock, to top the day. The recent Goodwood winner, who was offered by Kingsley Park, will now move on to a jumps career.

“He was clearly the pick of the day for us, and he has been bought for Paul Nicholls,” Taylor said. “We liked him when we saw him, Nathaniel is a big plus to go jumping, he has a lovely soft ground action and is just the type of horse we are looking for. He has the size and Charlie Johnston was very positive about him.”

Stephensen Bloodstock went to 72,000gns to secure the second-highest priced lot of the day, the 3-year-old Laafi (Fr) (Cloth of Stars {Ire}) (lot 74). The winner of the EBF Stallions Golden Horn Maiden S. at Nottingham last year was consigned by Somerville Lodge. She is out of the Smart Strike mare Mediterenea (Fr), who is a half-sister to multiple Group/Grade 1 winner and sire Erupt (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}).

The 4-year-old filly Timeless Melody (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) (lot 51) rounded out the top three on the day when the hammer fell at 42,000gns for the Leicester novice winner. Matt Coleman of Stroud Coleman Bloodstock signed the ticket for the daughter of Dufay (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who came from the Somerville Lodge consignment. The filly's second dam is Group 1 winner White Moonstone (Dynaformer).

“She has been bought for Alec Waugh's Normandy-based Jedburgh Stud,” Coleman said. “Alec has had a lot of luck, as many people have, with mares by Teofilo–he is a phenomenal broodmare sire, and just getting better and better.”

Bred by Rabbah Bloodstock Limited, Noor Al Hawa raced in the early part of his career for Jaber Abdullah and was trained by Andreas Wohler. He came to hand at three in 2016, posting a breakthrough black-type success in the Listed Prix de Tourgeville at Deauville and added a pair of German Group 3 tests before being acquired by the Qatar-based Al Wasmiyah Stud.

A three-length winner of the US$500,000 Qatar Derby (Listed), the chestnut was runner-up in the Listed H.H. The Emir's Trophy the following February and again in 2018 before winning the G3 Grand Prix de Vichy for trainer Elias Mikhalides that summer.

Permanently relocated to Doha in late 2018 and transferred to Georges Mikhalides, Noor Al Hawa went on to win 10 of 17 starts, including the 2021 Amir Trophy at his fifth attempt (video). His final racetrack appearance was a gallant fourth in defence of his Amir Trophy crown last February and he heads to the breeding barn with a career record of 18-6-5 from 37 starts for prize money of US$2,755,942.

“He's a remarkably tough horse, who has traveled extensively while performing over every surface and a large variety of distances,” renowned Qatar trainer Alban de Mieulle told Jour de Galop. “He's also a beautiful horse, very correct, with a great personality and I think that he will be a success as far as a sire of jumpers, for example. His owner is going to support him with flat mares.”

A half-brother to German stakes winner Majestic Jasmine (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), Noor Al Hawa is out of Majestic Roi, who carried Abdullah's silks to a 16-1 upset in the 2007 G1 Sun Chariot S. at Newmarket after causing a 25-1 boilover in that year's G3 Fred Darling S. She was also second in that year's G2 Prix de Sandringham at Chantilly. The listed-winning second dam L'Extra Honor (Hero's Honor) was also responsible for G3 Arc Trial hero Black Spirit (Black Minnaloushe). Noor Al Hawa's deeper female family includes the outstanding Holy Roman Emperor (Ire) (Danehill).

“Royal Scotsman likes a bit of cover and switches off well,” commented trainer Paul Cole. “Our main worry was just getting some cover, but nothing could have gone better today and it all went exactly as we'd hoped it would go. Nothing worries him and he is a fantastic horse. There is the possibility of stepping up in trip, but he has a lot of speed and is out of a fast mare. I can't see anything around that has as much speed as him. There are very good races on the horizon such as the [G1 Prix] Morny and potentially York. I'm not good at making quick decisions. I've had two or three other great horses, but leading up to this race he gave me a better vibe. You're never certain, as anything can happen, but everything went well and I couldn't comprehend being beaten. If you're looking at the [G1] 2000 Guineas, good horses can win over a lot of trips and the way he behaves is very good. Whether he gets a mile or not I don't know, but he is bred for it.”

Winning rider Jim Crowley, remaining on a high plateau after the G1 Sussex S. success of Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), added, “Royal Scotsman had the best form in the book, his Coventry form has worked out well and he was unlucky that day as I was drawn one and got a bump. He still travelled very strongly today, he would be even better with a bit of cut in the ground, and it was a nice performance. If the gap had shut, I would have kicked myself for not going. He was always going nicely and, once we got inside the final two furlongs, it was all over really. He has a lot of speed and could be a horse for the [G1] Prix Morny. He is physically strong and has lots of speed. The more he learns to relax, he will be able to go further.”

Jim Hay, husband of owner Fitri Hay, continued, “That was thrilling and it's why we do it. Paul and Oliver [Cole] were as confident as you can be coming into Goodwood. This is a very tricky track and there are no shoo-ins. We love coming to Goodwood and had a lot of success here. Win, lose or draw here, you have a fantastic day. Royal Scotsman is a serious horse.”

“I am thrilled with his run on only his second start,” Tom Clover said of Al Karrar's second-place finish. “Experience has just caught him out there, as he was on and off the bridle the whole way. He hit the line really strong and galloped out. He has done everything bar win. He is a lovely horse with a lovely future. I think we have done the right thing coming here and to be second in a Richmond is pretty good. What is lovely for us is that he should improve for the experience. We have him in the [G2] Champagne S. [at Doncaster] and, whether we will go six furlongs or seven furlongs next time, I don't know. If we get a smooth run through the autumn, he is a lovely horse for next year.”

Jake Warren, advisor to Chateau's owner Isa Salman Al Khalifa, said, “He has run very well considering the tight turnaround from Newbury. He was a bit unlucky in running, he got caught on the rail and nearly had to start his race again at the halfway point. He has finished off really well. He is a lovely horse and we will try and find a nice race for him. We will look at the [G2] Gimcrack [at York] and the 2-year-old Pattern as it unfolds. Havana Golds tend to be sharp horses, he is a nice big-framed animal and one would have to think that it could be possible [to go up in trip] in time. We will see.”

Belhab-raced 7-year-old's best performance was a third in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. in 2018, while throughout his 35-start career, he was also placed another four times at group level. Overall, Century Dream's record stands at 10 winners and another eight top three finishes to go with $723,357 in earnings.

“It was a very strong race today, but we've always believed this filly to be high class and we're very happy she won,” commented trainer Roger Varian. “The first half of the season didn't really work out for her, so we gave her a break and she's done well since. She's matured, she's been excellent in training at home and we were confident of a good performance and hopeful of a win. She ran at York in the [G3] Musidora over 10 furlongs, but was very fresh that day. She wasn't that well behaved, but still ran a good race behind Snowfall. She then went to the [G1 Epsom] Oaks where the ground was heavy and had a hard race, which took a lot out of her. She didn't enjoy it and is a filly who likes a sound surface. She's a big-framed filly, we had to give her time and I'd like to thank owner Ali Saeed for being very patient.”

Next month's Oct. 3 G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe looms large on the horizon and Varian will take his time before confirming connections' plans. “We'll see how she is in her training at home over the next one or two week,” he added. “The Arc is under consideration, of course, and we'd like the sun to keep shining, but it's very important to see what her condition is beforehand. We'll speak with the owner and see what he wants to do.”

Bemoaning a perceived lack of urgency on the front end, rider Frankie Dettori sought to explain the first reversal of Snowfall's sophomore campaign and said, “I found myself too far from the front end and I think the pacemaker [La Joconde] didn't go fast enough. The race turned into a sprint and the winner kicked on first. The other filly has more speed than Snowfall and that's what made the difference.”

Teona, who becomes the 16th top-level winner for her sire, is the second runner and second pattern-race winner out of the smart Ambivalent (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}). Ambivalent's five victories include G1 Pretty Polly S. and G2 Middleton S. wins. She also ran third in the G1 Coronation Cup and G1 Dubai Sheema Classic and her first produce is G2 Prix Hocquart victor Al Hilalee (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). “It is with a heavy heart that we have decided to retire Prince of Arran,” Fellowes tweeted of the Rabbah Bloodstock-bred. “He has taken me places I could never have dreamed of and I am delighted he was here to witness my first domestic group winner. Happy retirement old boy.”

The trainer added, “An amazing day. It was quite apt Prince Of Arran was here on a day I got my first domestic group winner. It's been a long time coming and we've gone so close on so many occasions, including with Prince Of Arran, and for it to happen with him here was fantastic. A special day. One I will never forget.”

Originally, Prince of Arran's last race was to have been the 2021 Melbourne Cup on Nov. 2. However, the 8-year-old gelding was barred from competing in a fourth edition by the Australian authorities. Besides the September S., Prince of Arran's other 2021 starts was a fifth-place in the G3 Sagaro S. at Ascot in April. A two-time Group 3 winner in Australia, his record stands at 49-6-8-10 with $2,599,090 in earnings. He placed at the group level in England in the 2017 and 2020 Sagaro S. and the 2019/20 G3 September S. Prince of Arran also ran third in the GII Belmont Gold Cup Invitational S. in 2018.

Fellowes continued, “The plan had been to run him in the Melbourne Cup and retire him after that. This was going to be his last year racing whatever. The run today was very good for him. It's as good as he's run in this race.

“He ran well up to form and it was lovely to see him much better than he was at Ascot in the spring. If we'd been allowed to go to Australia we'd have gone, but now that's off the cards there's not much else here for him now.

“We retire a sound and happy horse and he'll have a fantastic retirement wherever that may be. For someone at this stage of my career with a horse like him, some of the days I've had have been so special.

“He's won over £2m in prize-money, we've travelled all around the world with him and he's been an utter superstar. I can't thank his owners enough or the many people in our yard who have had such an impact on his career.”
