The four-day Arqana Vente d'Elevage concluded on Tuesday, with four fillies and mares making €1 million or more, and 668 horses (77%) marked as sold for a gross of €47,135,000.

Overall, the average was down 8% to €70,561, however, the median rose to €20,000, an increase of 16% off of 2022's mark. The sale was topped by Group 1 winner Place Du Carrousel (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) at €4.025 million from leading buyer Portofino Bloodstock.

Taking just Tuesday's trade into account, 109 lots sold (79%) for a gross of €581,500. The day's average was down 5% to €5,335, while the median increased by 14% to €4,000.

Tuesday's top lot was lot 919, the Kingman (GB) mare Crispina (GB). From the family of stallions Cityscape (GB) and Bated Breath (GB), the Haras d'Annebault-consigned 6-year-old was sold in foal to G1 Deutsches Derby hero Laccario (Ger) and brought €52,000 from SARL Trotting Bloodstock.

A named filly foal, Laskaria (Fr) (Laccario {Ger}), was the day's dearest foal, changing hands for €25,000 from the draft of Haras d'Annebault. Richard Venn Bloodstock bought the April foal on behalf of Paola Beacco Bd.

La Motteraye Consignment was the leading vendor, offering 39 mares, fillies and foals for a gross of €4,971,000, including Channel (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}) for €1.2 million.

Arqana President Eric Hoyeau and Executive Director Freddy Powell said, “In a record-breaking year, the 2023 edition of the Vente d'Élevage has concluded with very good results. With four fillies and mares making over €1 million, including an historic top price of over €4 million, turnover from the December sale exceeded €45 million for the second time. Driven by buyers from all over Europe, as well as from the United States, Australia, Japan, India, Turkey and France, demand remained buoyant. The middle market segment also remained strong, with a high level of activity both internationally and domestically. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our vendors, as well as the buyers who once again turned out in force. We would also like to thank all our teams, in the yards, the stud farms and in the offices, for their involvement during this great marathon that is the Vente d'Elevage. As this marks the end of the sales year, we wish everyone a very happy holiday season.”

Al Shaqab Racing's Place Du Carrousel (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), already a Group 1 winner in last year's G1 Prix de l'Opera, defeated defending champion Iresine (Fr) (Manduro {Ger}) by a neck to take Sunday's G2 Qatar Prix Foy at ParisLongchamp. The latter was a half-length to the good of 2022 G1 Deutsches Derby and G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis Bayerisches Zuchtrennen hero Sammarco (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) in third.

The 4-year-old filly was the 13-5 second choice behind her G1 Prix Ganay conqueress Iresine at 1-2. Content to race midfield as Plesant Jane (Fr) (Pivotal {GB}) forged to the front while watched by Fenelon (Fr) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), Place Du Carrousel perched one off the fence next to Sammarco with Iresine last of the quintet. Drifting back a spot to fourth on the bend, the daughter of G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris victress Traffic Jam (Ire) (Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}) remained well covered up, as the field neared the straight. Closing willingly when given her cue, she quickly drew on even terms at the 200-metre mark and found just enough late to withstand the withering run of Iresine in the final strides.

Rupert Pritchard Gordon, racing manager for Al Shaqab Racing, said, “The filly showed that she's in good form. She's still fresh because she hasn't run much this year, due to a slight setback in the spring. The weather conditions are exceptional today, and Monsieur Fabre preferred to go for the Qatar Prix Foy rather than the [G1] Qatar Prix Vermeille, anticipating that there would be less pace in the Foy.”

Since her Opera heroics last October, Place Du Carrousel was a never-nearer fifth in the Ganay this spring, but after a break, was a winner over good to soft ground in the G3 Prix Gontaut-Biron at Deauville in August. Connections are now dreaming of the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

“When we decided to keep her in training at four, after her success in the Prix de l'Opéra Longines last year, the idea was

to aim her at the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe,” he added. “So if all goes well between now and then, we'll be heading to the race of dreams.”

Mandore International Agency, on behalf of Al Shaqab Racing, picked up the bay for €260,000 out of the Arqana Select Sale at Deauville in September of 2020 from the Ballylinch Stud draft.

Pedigree Notes

One of 19 Group 1 winners for her Ballylinch sire, Place Du Carrousel is the first foal out of Traffic Jam, who also ran second in the G2 Prix de Pomone. Since foaling the Foy winner, she has delivered four fillies–the 3-year-old Nariman Point (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), a 1.05-million gns Kingman (GB) juvenile named Monyat Galby (Ire), a yearling by Sea The Stars (Ire) who is consigned as lot 158 by Ballylinch to the upcoming Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1, and a full-sister to the winner this term.

Her third dam, Sweet Emotion (Ire) (Bering {GB}), foaled Listed Midsummer S. victor Winged Cupid (Ire) (In The Wings {GB}), who also ran second in the G1 Racing Post Trophy. This is the extended family of the high class dual Group 1 winner Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}).

Twelve months ago, Cheveley Park Stud's Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) was using Deauville's G1 Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois as a springboard back to the big time having suffered a shock reversal in the G1 Falmouth S. This time around, the John and Thady Gosden-trained homebred is in Normandy attempting to make up for another defeat having been bogged down in Goodwood's unexpectedly tacky surface in the G1 Sussex S. As she had shown when disappointing in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. on Champions Day, easy ground is not her thing and so the drying conditions ahead of Sunday offer a sense of relief to connections of the high-class filly.

“Goodwood was a sort of disappointment having been the target, but with the ground conditions she just didn't relish that at all,” the Stud's Chris Richardson said. “Frankie made his move to come to the rail and his injection of pick-up was short lived in those conditions. Conditions in France look to have dried up. I think John and Thady were happy with the fact Frankie was kind to her once her chance was gone at Goodwood. Of course there is always a slight concern, but we know she's talented, she's only had two races this year and they tell me she's in a good place. There should be plenty of pace and we will let the filly do the talking. She was kept in training to race on and that's where we are at this point.”

Inspiral was unable to get past Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's Triple Time (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in the G1 Queen Anne S. at Royal Ascot, but the times show that she had a stiff task attempting to come off that pace and Karl Burke's surprise winner has to do it all again with inevitable pace pressure from Yeguada Centurion SL's Big Rock (Fr) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}). That G3 Prix de Guiche and G3 Prix la Force winner has no meaningful form at this mile trip, but he represents the red-hot G1 Prix du Jockey Club form and is a fascinating contender.

Hisaaki Saito's Good Guess (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) is two-for-two over this straight course this season, but at seven furlongs having mastered the G3 Prix Djebel and G1 Prix Jean Prat and has stamina to prove. He was sixth behind Marhaba Ya Sanafi (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}) in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains over ParisLongchamp's round mile in May, but has developed markedly in the interim and is from a family of smart milers. Good Guess is joined by the fellow Fabrice Chappet-trained G1 Grand Prix de Paris hero Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), who is making a welcome return to action this term as he gears towards the middle-distance tests of late summer and the autumn.

Jaber Abdullah's Marhaba Ya Sanafi, who has subsequently finished six-lengths third in the Prix du Jockey Club, is one of two representatives for the owner alongside the G1 2000 Guineas and G1 Irish 2000 Guineas-placed Hi Royal (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) who is on a retrieval mission. His assistant racing manager Philip Robinson said of the pair, “This race brings out all the top horses, but our two are there and will have some kind of shout if at the top of their game. I think they will both run good races and won't be far away, but they are going to have to find a little bit better and improve a bit to win. Marhaba Ya Sanafi has got form over a mile, but I think the French Derby is his better form.”

A Renewed London In Berlin?
Sunday also sees the G1 Westminster 133rd Grosser Preis von Berlin at Hoppegarten, with Godolphin's promoted G1 St Leger second New London (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) tackle the Haras de la Perelle and Stephane Wattel's four-times group winner Simca Mille (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) in the 12-furlong feature. Given a wind operation after his disappointing return third in the Listed Fred Archer S. at Newmarket at the start of July, New London needs to catch up now so deep into the season. “New London has definitely come forward since his first start of the year at Newmarket,” trainer Charlie Appleby said. “We have been pleased with him going into this and he showed during his three-year-old campaign that he is a talented campaigner.” Last year's G1 Deutsches Derby and G1Grosser Dallmayr-Preis winner Sammarco (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and Eckhard Sauren and Liberty Racing 2020's G2 Grosser Hansa-Preis winner Assistent (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) appear the pick of a smart home team in another intriguing top-level European encounter between the Arc underdogs.

Hot Action Continues At Deauville…
Sunday also sees the 10-furlong G3 Prix Gontaut-Biron, where Al Shaqab Racing and Ballylinch Stud's G1 Prix de l'Opera heroine Place Du Carrousel (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) bids to get her season started in earnest, while the juveniles get their chance in the G3 Circus Maximus Prix Francois Boutin over seven furlongs. Godolphin's Doncaster maiden winner Majestic One (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) adds spice from the Charlie Appleby stable successful twice in the last six years along with Qatar Racing Limited's six-furlong debut course scorer Evade (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) from the Andre Fabre stable. Tuesday's G2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano will only serve to ramp up the excitement, as Gousserie Racing and Ecuries Serge Stempniak's G1 Prix du Jockey Club hero Ace Impact (Ire) (Cracksman {GB}) was among eight confirmations revealed on Saturday for the 10-furlong feature. Aidan O'Brien has declared the returning GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf hero Victoria Road (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}).

Al Shaqab Racing's Place Du Carrousel (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}–Traffic Jam {Ire}, by Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}), off the track since failing to land a blow in Chantilly's June 19 G1 Prix de Diane, exacted revenge on that Classic's winner, 'TDN Rising Star' Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}), with a late rush to secure a career high in the flickering embers of Sunday's G1 Prix de l'Opera Longines at ParisLongchamp.

The €260,000 Arqana August graduate had earlier annexed Saint-Cloud's Apr. 29 G3 Prix Cleopatre before taking second behind another 'TDN Rising Star', Above The Curve (American Pharoah), when contesting the May 29 G1 Prix Saint-Alary over this 10-furlong course and distance in her penultimate start. With this effort, she has punched her ticket to the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Keeneland in November.

Shuffled back through the pack to race towards the rear after a sharp getaway, the 41-1 outsider responded to pressure from the turn into the straight to go fifth entering the final furlong and pounced inside the final 50 yards to deny Nashwa and Above The Curve by 3/4-of-a-length and a short head.

It was most certainly a case of right time, right place for Place Du Carrousel and breeder Ballylinch Stud, whose yearling half-sister by Kingman (GB) is due under the hammer as lot 261 on day two of Tattersalls' upcoming October Book 1 sale.

“Andre Fabre has done a magnificent job with the filly,” said Al Shaqab's racing manager Rupert Pritchard-Gordon. “He told me that she needed a break after the Prix de Diane as the filly had a hard race that day. He was worried because she hadn't had a prep race beforehand and that's why we went to Compiegne for a public gallop, which did her good. She's a tough filly, she got some good cover during the race and displayed neat powers of acceleration. To see these colours win on Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe day is very important.”

“We had a good race,” continued Mickael Barzalona. “They went off fast from the gates, but I managed to hold a good position on my filly. She did backpedal a bit during the race, but that enabled her to get a breather. She didn't expend any unnecessary energy in this ground and came with a steady run. Once she swung around [eventual fifth] Rumi, she finished with great gusto.”

The ground was a compromising factor for G1 Prix de Diane heroine Nashwa, who made a bold effort from the front only to be collared by the winner in the final metres. “She ran very well and, given her draw, it was not an easy task,” said John Gosden. “She had to make her effort quite early on and, furthermore, the very soft ground did not help her. We have no idea where she will go next. It's hard to get beaten, but she ran a good race.”

Above The Curve's trainer Joseph O'Brien reflected, “Above The Curve ran a good race on this ground. I'm proud of her as she was keeping very good company.”

Pedigree Notes

Place Du Carrousel, who becomes the 17th Group 1 winner for her sire (by Shamardal), is the first of four foals out of G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris victrix Traffic Jam (Ire) (Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}), herself the leading performer produced by a multiple-winning sibling of stakes-winning G1 Racing Post Trophy second Winged Cupid (Ire) (In the Wings {GB}). Descendants of her fourth dam Hiwaayati (GB) (Shadeed), herself a half-sister to G2 Prix Maurice de Gheest victor Lead On Time (Nureyev) and Group winning G1 Irish 2000 Guineas and G1 July Cup runner-up Great Commotion (Nureyev), include G1 Coronation S. victrix Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and this year's G1 Oaks heroine Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Traffic Jam has the hitherto unraced 2-year-old filly Nariman Point (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), the aforementioned yearling filly by Kingman (GB) and a weanling filly by Sea The Stars {Ire}) to come.

Ensuring there was no repeat of the Prix du Jockey Club double-draw farce, an independent bailiff was on hand to oversee Thursday morning's presentation for the 173rd edition of Chantilly's G1 Prix de Diane Longines. Proceedings concluded without hitch, with the overnight pre-confirmations all standing their ground and a final field of 18 is set to head postward for Sunday's €1,000,000 10 1/2-furlong Classic, turfdom's very own Competition of Elegance. Imad Al Sagar's G1 Cazoo Oaks third Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}) is among the nominees and has drawn gate two, to the outside Juddmonte's G2 Prix Greffulhe runner-up Agave (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in one. Last month's G1 Prix Saint-Alary second and third, Place du Carrousel (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and Queen Trezy (Fr) (Almanzor {Fr}), have been drawn alongside each other in stalls eight and seven. Ballydoyle's loan representative, Pouliches 11th Toy (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), has been allocated post 16.

Second best in the May 4 Listed Cheshire Oaks, TDN Rising Star Above the Curve (American Pharoah) made sure she was front and centre where it mattered in Sunday's G1 St Mark's Basilica Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary at ParisLongchamp. Sent up to track the steady pace by Ryan Moore in a close second, the 7-5 favourite was committed with 300 metres remaining and stayed on to deny Place du Carrousel (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) by a length, with Queen Trezy (Fr) (Almanzor {Fr}) the same margin away in third. “They went steady and that was against her–it turned into a sprint, she's still babyish and is still learning and there is plenty to come,” Moore said of the Joseph O'Brien-trained winner.

Above the Curve, who had earned TDN Rising Star status at the expense of Thoughts of June (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in a maiden over this trip at Leopardstown Apr. 6 before losing out to that rival on easier ground tackling an extended 11 furlongs at Chester, could be heading back to Ireland for next start according to Hermine Bastide, representing Coolmore. “She has entries in all the big fillies' races including the Prix de Royallieu and the Prix de Diane, but her next race is likely to be the Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh,” he said. “She is a lovely filly and Joseph is delighted with the performance. Maybe she will be bred to St Mark's Basilica in the future. She is lightly-raced and there is probably more room for improvement, she has a lovely temperament and ticks all the boxes.”

Trainer Yann Lerner said of Queen Trezy, “She is so cold it's unbelievable. We fitted her with sheepskins to motivate her, but still she was caught for speed and doing the bare minimum. On the other hand, it is sometimes an advantage for a horse to be so relaxed and it helps on big occasions when you have to deal with the pressure. There is no doubt that a mile and a half will be her game, but I think we will try the Prix de Diane first.”

Above the Curve's dam is an unraced daughter of the revered Mariah's Storm (Rahy), which makes her a half-sibling to Giant's Causeway. Already responsible for the G3 Irish 1000 Guineas Trial and G3 Weld Park S. third Thinking of You, Fabulous is a half to the “Iron Horse's” G2 Cherry Hinton S.-winning sister You'resothrilling which links her to the Galileo clan of Gleneagles (Ire), Happily (Ire), Joan of Arc (Ire) and Marvellous (Ire). Also connected to that sire's G1 Irish Champion S.-winning sire Decorated Knight (GB), she has been bred to Justify for the past three seasons, with 2-year-old and yearling fillies followed by a colt foal.

Off the mark over nine furlongs at Fontainebleau Apr. 12, Al Shaqab Racing and Ballylinch Stud's Place du Carrousel (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) came through her first major test in style to annexe Friday's G3 Prix Cleopatre at Saint-Cloud. Bred to appreciate at least this 10 1/2-furlong trip, being out of the G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris winner Traffic Jam (Ire) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}), the Andre Fabre trainee was held up in last early in contrast to her last outing when she was sent forward from the break. Nudged along by Mickael Barzalona to close at the top of the straight, the 23-10 favourite was produced wide to overhaul Samahram (Fr) (Sea the Moon {Ger}) and Kawida (GB) (Sir Percy {GB}) with 100 metres remaining and beat that duo by 3/4 of a length and a head respectively.

Rupert Pritchard Gordon, representing Al Shaqab in France, said, “When she won last time at Fontainebleau she jumped the pedestrian path after the finish line, unseated Mickael Barzalona and was knocked by the filly behind her that fell–it was a scary moment and she was given a few days off to recover,” he explained. “Lately, she was fine at home and pleasing in her work and she confirmed that today in good style. She was perfectly relaxed behind and she quickened brilliantly, so we have to be delighted. She is in both group 1s, the [May 29] Saint Alary [at Parislongchamp] and the Diane [at Chantilly June 19], and Andre Fabre will make the call.”

Place du Carrousel, who was a €260,000 purchase by Mandore International Agency at the 2020 Arqana Deauville Select Sale, is the first foal out of the aforementioned Traffic Jam who was also second in the G2 Prix de Pomone and is a half to the dam of the Australian group 3-placed Last Sight (NZ) (Showcasing {GB}). Her family features the G1 Racing Post Trophy runner-up Winged Cupid (Ire) (In the Wings {GB}) and the G1 Coronation S. and G1 Matron S. heroine Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), which links her to Galileo's Minding (Ire) and Empress Josephine (Ire) and Sunday's G1 1000 Guineas hopeful Tuesday (Ire). The dam has the 2-year-old filly Nariman Point (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), a yearling filly by Kingman (GB) and a filly foal by Sea the Stars (Ire).
