“She is a quality filly with a lot of substance and a beautiful head,” said Penny Lopez of Southern Comfort Farm. “We couldn't be happier with the mare's first foal.”

Walmac Farm has come a long way since owner Gary Broad purchased the historic property off Paris Pike in 2018. After several years spent resurrecting the farm and its signature blue and white barns, in 2022 Broad brought his multiple graded stakes winner Core Beliefs (Quality Road) home to be the first sire to stand in a newly renovated stallion complex.

This year, Broad added Grade I winner Pinehurst (Twirling Candy) to the roster, handing the farm's new stallion salesman Jay Goodwin a challenge to get the word out on the rookie sire in a short period of time after he joined the Walmac team in January.

As another breeding season quickly approaches, Walmac has doubled its stallion roster for 2024 with a pair of newcomers hailing from auspicious sire lines.

Broad's goal for this year was to lock down a new stallion by supersire Into Mischief and another by emerging influential stallion Gun Runner. He accomplished the mission with Pappacap, who stands out as the first son of Gun Runner to go to stud that was a graded stakes winner at two, and Fulsome, a multiple graded stakes-winning son of Into Mischief.

A homebred for George and Karen Russell's Rustlewood Farm trained by Mark Casse, Pappacap was a debut winner in May of his juvenile season and he returned to the winner's circle with a near-five length win in the GII Best Pal S. Later at two, he was runner-up to future Eclipse Champion juvenile Corniche (Quality Road) in both the GI American Pharoah S. and the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

Pappacap also competed against top competition at three, running second to Jack Christopher (Munnings) in the GII Pat Day Mile S. and the GI Woody Stephens S.

“To have a Gun Runner that was that precocious and that fast at two and then he came back at three and was just as talented, we were extremely happy with his race record,” said Goodwin. “He just made sense for us. He also never ran on Lasix at two or three and today that is as big of a selling point for a stallion as any.”

But it's Pappacap's physical, Goodwin said, that has impressed the breeders who have stopped by to visit since the new addition was announced in early September.

“Physically, he's probably the best Gun Runner that I've seen,” he shared. “He's got that beautiful Gun Runner shoulder and neck, but he also has a little bit more hip than you would expect.”

For Goodwin, a former partner in Select Sales Agency who had never sold stallion seasons before taking on the job at Walmac this year, the experience of announcing the arrival of Pappacap to breeders in September was completely different than his start with Pinehurst, who joined the roster at Walmac in late November of last year well after most of the newcomers to the Kentucky stallion ranks had already been announced.

“The reaction from breeders has been crazy,” Goodwin said. “We had to fight tooth and nail last year for Pinehurst because we got him in here late. We were very happy with where he ended up, but we worked our butts off to get him to where he was. With Pappacap, it has been a lot easier. We just have to answer the phone. They're rolling in and he's going to breed a full book.

Goodwin reported that Pappacap is already closing in on 150 mares, adding that the stallion's $12,500 initial fee offers value for breeders looking to send their mare to a son of Gun Runner.

“Pappacap is going to come right under a lot of these Gun Runners,” he explained. “We priced him right and we priced him to have a full book. At $12,500, I think he'll be the best deal in the stallion book.”

From the family of Peruvian Horse of the Year Al Qasr (Aptitude), Pappacap is out of a graded stakes-placed Scat Daddy mare and is a half-brother to last year's GIII With Anticipation S. winner Boppy O (Bolt d'Oro).

Broad achieved his goal in standing sons of Gun Runner and Into Mischief, but with Juddmonte homebred Fulsome, the millionaire's female family might be just as notable as his sireline.

“Fulsome's pedigree is three generations of Juddmonte,” Goodwin explained. “The pedigrees on that farm are second to none. Juddmonte bred him, raced him and stayed in on him.”

Fulsome's dam Flourish (Distorted Humor) is a half-sister to Grade I winners Sightseek (Distant View) and Tates Creek (Rahy) and her produce record includes graded stakes-placed Mr Darcy (Harlan's Holiday) and Rimprotector (Point of Entry).

The pedigree also ties in to Walmac Farm's story. Fulsome's stakes-winning second dam Viviana is a daughter of Nureyev, who rose to prominence as a sire at Walmac several decades ago and is now buried near the stallion complex.

Earning over $1.2 million throughout his career, Fulsome won five stakes races including the GIII Matt Winn S. and the GIII Smarty Jones S. at three and the GIII Oaklawn Mile S. and GIII West Virginia Governor's S. at four. He closed out his career with a Grade I placing in the Clark S. last year.

Goodwin noted that Into Mischief is often credited for the heart he puts into his horses and Fulsome is no exception.

“He was tough,” he said. “He was not scared to take on the fight. You could see him really dig down and fight every single race. As someone who breeds mares, you like to see that. You need heart. That's the characteristic I like the most.”

Goodwin's favorite race of Fulsome's career, he said, was the 2022 GIII Oaklawn Mile S. where the Brad Cox trainee closed late to win by a neck, defeating a field that included graded stakes winners Cezanne (Curlin), Silver Prospector (Declaration of War), Roadster (Quality Road) and Law Professor (Constitution).

“I think that was probably the best field he beat,” said Goodwin. “That Oaklawn Mile ends at the mile pole and at the top of the stretch you're thinking there's no way he's going to get there. I still don't know how he gets to the wire and then he ends up winning easily. Brad loved this horse. I talked to Brad after we got him and he said that he thought he would get him a Grade I. He didn't have anything but good things to say.”

Fulsome will stand for $7,500 in 2024.

Fulsome and Pappacap's combined race record of 10 wins from 29 starts is another point of pride for the team at Walmac.

“Both of these horses were sound and ran in a lot of races,” said Goodwin. “They were very talented and were at the top of their crop. They're both well-made and correct. When you see them, you see why they stayed so sound throughout their career.”

As Walmac gears up for another breeding season, Goodwin said the plan for the farm's fledgling stallion business is to continue to grow from here.

“I think Gary wants to find a couple every year,” he shared. “He knows how hard it is to make a stallion, but he also knows you have to get the mares. He's been game. We brought him both these horses and he was ready to roll, so I think we will keep growing. We've got four really good stallions by Into Mischief, Gun Runner, Quality Road and Twirling Candy, so we've got the sire power. We're going to breed a lot of mares here in the next few years and I can't wait.”

WE THE PEOPLE (c, 4, Constitution–Letchworth, by Tiznow) was last seen in Parx's crowning GI Pennsylvania Derby as MGISW Taiba (Gun Runner), GISW Zandon (Upstart), and MGISW Cyberknife (Gun Runner) went on to fill the trifecta. Before that, he'd made a name for himself on the back of a 10 1/4-length score in the GIII Peter Pan S., and then ran fourth in the GI Belmont S. next out as stablemates GISW Mo Donegal (Uncle Mo) and Champion 3-year-old filly, MGISW Nest (Curlin) rounded a big day for their–now shared–conditioner. Making said trainer change from Rodolphe Brisset to Todd Pletcher for this start, the betting public was not dissuaded by the lengthy layoff as they made the good looking colt the 3-5 favorite, and were not disappointed. Jumping fairly and setting the pace with ears pricked, the dark bay cruised through the first turn and shifted down to the two path as a pair of challengers pressed the point nearing the final bend. Inching away at the three furlong pole, he widened his margin of advantage to three lengths as Britain's Kitten (Big Blue Kitten) came on for second.

Fasig-Tipton's December Digital Selected Sale–the company's largest digital sale to date–closed Tuesday, Dec. 13, with 97 horses of all ages grossing better than $1.9 million. A total of 358 bidders registered for the sale, with a total of 2,535 bids placed on the 129 horses on offer. The digital platform hosted better than 30,000 between Dec. 8 and 13.

Elicia Rankin signed for the sale's top offering, the 10-year-old Moyo Honey (Mizzen Mast), who sold for $340,000 in foal to leading sire Gun Runner. Moyo Honey was making her third trip through a Fasig-Tipton 'ring', having improved into a $70,000 graduate of the 2014 Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale after making $25,000 at the October Yearling Sale the fall prior. Third in the 2016 GII Bayakoa H., the mare hails from the female family of Grade I winners Greenwood Lake, Success Express and Whitmore's Conn. Paramount Sales consigned Moyo Honey.

Rankin credits her daughter, owner Gayla Rankin, with encouraging her to get into Thoroughbred ownership and for introducing her to Fasig-Tipton Digital.

“It was very easy to use,” Rankin said of the platform. “I'm extremely pleased with my purchase.”

The sale's most active buyer as MWG LLC, who signed for 14 lots for a total of $202,500, while Town & Country Farms and Gary Broad were busy acquiring mares for new Walmac sire Pinehurst, who was also purchased out of a Fasig-Tipton Digital Sale.

Shannon Potter of Town & Country said, “We were very happy to be able to find some quality mares on Fasig Digital to support our new stallion Pinehurst. I think [Fasig-Tipton Director of Digital Sales] Leif [Aaron] and the Fasig-Tipton team did a wonderful job recruiting some quality product for availability to purchase this time of year.”

Leading consignor Carrie Brogden is another top consignor who is committed to this type of bidding and selling platform.

“Mark my words, I will try to sell all of our reasonably priced pregnant mares in digital sales,” she said. “The difference in stress and risk to pregnancy is astonishing and I am already thrilled with the pricing.”

Others to fetch in excess of six figures were Taylor Made's Kerry's Ring (Kitten's Joy), who sold for $150,000 to Kittiwake Equine in foal to Horse of the Year Authentic; a weanling colt by Omaha Beach that attracted $130,000 from WKY Thoroughbreds from the Taylor Made consignment; and the $100,000 Pinehurst Stallion Mares paid for Ryan's Rocket (Street Sense), also from Taylor Made and sold in foal to the late Flatter.”

Aaron pronounced himself extremely pleased with the performance of Fasig-Tipton Digital in its first year.

“The December Digital Selected Sale was our largest digital catalogue to date, and it marked the close of an incredibly successful year for the Digital platform,” he said. “Buyers and sellers have been very supportive of Fasig-Tipton Digital, we've sold 279 horses in our first year to the tune of around $10 million. We still have work to do but this first year has shown us that there is a need for this segment of the horse business and we look forward to expanding upon that success in 2023. This is just the beginning for Fasig-Tipton Digital.”

Entries are now open or the March Digital Sale to be held Mar. 2-7, 2023. The 2023 digital sales calendar may be viewed here.

Last year's GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity S. winner Pinehurst (Twirling Candy–Giant Win, by Giant's Causeway) has been retired from racing and will stand the 2023 breeding season at Gary Broad's Walmac Farm after being acquired in partnership with Kiki and Louise Courtelis's Town and Country Farms Nov. 22 in a Fasig-Tipton Digital 'Flash Sale.' The price, a record for a digital sales price in the U.S., was undisclosed, according to Leif Aaron, Fasig-Tipton's Director of Digital Sales.

“Tom Ryan [of SF Bloodstock] called us on Wednesday of last week and we were able to open the sale up the very next day, which showed the versatility of the website and how quickly we could get everything going,” said Aaron.

Aaron said Pinehurst appealed to both owners and breeders worldwide and, as the sale progressed, they had interested parties particularly in the Middle East and the U.S. He said Fasig-Tipton had over 1,000 people log onto the website during the sale with registered bidders from all over the world. Aaron said there were a total of 41 individual bids on the horse.

“He was already a Grade I winner and a beautiful specimen,” said Aaron, “so not only did the horse really fit some races, particularly in the Middle East, but there were also a lot of breeders who were looking at him as a stallion. We had interested parties from all over the world with people from all different backgrounds interested in the horse.

“Basically, what we tried to do was make it as beneficial for the buyers and sellers as we possibly could,” said Aaron. “What we have done more than anything is show just how liquid horses can be and how we can turn on a dime to provide an experience for the buyers and sellers that is equivalent to the experience they can expect at a live auction.”

In addition to winning the Del Mar Futurity, Pinehurst also won the G3 Al Rajhi Bank Saudi Derby in Saudi Arabia and was second in the GII San Vicente S. Trained by both Bob Baffert and John Terranova, Pinehurst's current race record stands at 7-3-1-0 with earnings of more than $1.2 million. His ownership group consisted of the partnership of SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Robert E. Masterson, Stonestreet Stables, Jay A. Schoenfarber, Waves Edge Capital, Catherine Donovan, Golconda Stable, and Siena Farm. Bred on a similar cross to superstar stallion Gun Runner, Pinehurst was consigned to Fasig-Tipton by Elite, agent, as a racing or stallion prospect.

“There were 41 bids on the horse,” said Elite's Brad Weisbord. “This is a big sale for us, because we haven't sold many horses digitally. It was a great opportunity provided by SF Bloodstock and their partners to sell a young horse, a GI winner, who had some great credentials, and to their credit, they utilized this platform in a perfect way. This platform really hasn't taken off in America in the way it has in other places yet. But when utilized for high-end stock like this, I think it does have a lot of life. I think that one of the reasons it hasn't taken off is that there hasn't been enough high-end stock put online. But yesterday, we saw that when you do have quality and when you do time it right, you can get a great result. We're grateful that the SF team gave us the product to bring to the marketplace. They have been big supporters of ours with their racehorses, not just here, but throughout the year.”

A stud fee for Pinehurst will be announced at a later date.

Pinehurst (Twirling Candy–Giant Win, by Giant's Causeway), winner of last year's GI Del Mar Futurity and this year's G3 Saudi Derby, will be offered on Fasig-Tipton Digital in a one-horse auction beginning Thursday, Nov. 17 at 12 p.m. ET and concluding Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. ET. Pinehurst is being offered by ELiTE, agent, as a racing or stallion prospect.

The bay, bred on a similar cross to Gun Runner, was a debut winner at Del Mar last August and followed up with a 4 1/2-length victory in the Futurity. Making his sophomore debut in the GII San Vicente S., Pinehurst was a sound second to the talented Forbidden Kingdom (American Pharoah) and made virtually all the running over the testing one-turn mile at King Abdulaziz Racecourse in Saudia Arabia, defeating the well-regarded Japanese raider Sekifu (Jpn) (Henny Hughes).

Pinehurst has three wins from seven trips to the post for earnings of $1,213,500.

Produced by a daughter of MSW Win's Fair Lady (Dehere)–herself a full-sister to MGSW/GISP Graeme Hall–Pinehurst is out of a full-sister to GSW First Passage, the dam of GSW Berned (Bernardini) and First to Act (Curlin), second to Nest (Curlin) in the GII Beldame S. last month. Pinehurst's third dam also includes GISW Harmony Lodge (Hennessy).

“Pinehurst's credentials make him a highly attractive offering,” said Leif Aaron, Fasig-Tipton Director of Digital Sales. “He's a Grade I winner at two, an international graded stakes winner at three and impeccably bred. He should have a broad appeal to racing and stallion operations the world over.”

The Saudi Derby had been won by horses based in Japan in each of its first two runnings and the island nation swept the first three races on Saturday's Saudi Cup undercard. Given a positive ride by Flavien Prat over a racing surface that seemed kind to front-runners, Pinehurst (Twirling Candy) had his full battling qualities on display and withstood a late charge from Sekifu (Jpn) (Henny Hughes) to register a half-length success in the $1.5-million test, upgraded to Group 3 level for the first time in 2022.

Off to a good start from a wide gate, last year's GI Del Mar Futurity hero found his way to the front after the opening 400 meters, as the locally trained I Am Magic (Ire) (Magician {Ire}) tried to keep pace inside, with Cattleya S. hero Consigliere (Jpn) (Drefong) close in tow. Maintaining a slender advantage on the turn as I Am Magic retreated, Pinehurst was narrowly in front turning for home as Sovereign Prince (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) chimed in three out, kept finding into the final eighth of a mile under a vigourous ride and boxed on gamely as Sekifu pulled back the winning margin to a half-length. Consigliere was rather one-paced in third, while the previously unbeaten Alnaader (KSA) (Teletext) fought on bravely to be a creditable fourth.

“I'm very proud of him and happy for my team,” winning trainer Bob Baffert said from afar. “It's exciting to win after coming up short a couple of times over there. I hate when they show that 100-meter line on the screen because I've lost so much money in that last 100 meters at that track the past two years, but we got it done today.”

Baffert suggested that Pinehurst, who was exiting a runner-up effort in the seven-furlong GII San Vicente S. Jan. 29. would run next in the G2 UAE Derby at Meydan Mar. 26 over a more-demanding 1900-meter journey around two turns.

Pedigree Notes:

One of his sire's seven top-level winners and 14 graded winners, Pinehurst hails from a talented and deep Sabine Stable family.

His dam, acquired by breeder Fred Hertrich III for $95,000 at Keeneland January in 2015, is a daughter of Sabine's dual stakes-winning Win's Fair Lady, whose Grade III-winning daughter First Passage (Giant's Causeway) produced GIII Molly Pitcher S. heroine Berned (Bernardini). The colt's third dam, the Grade III winner Win Crafty Lady, not only bred MGSW & GISP Graeme Hall (Dehere), but also $1.65-million Fasig-Tipton Calder grad and future GISW Harmony Lodge (Hennessy), whose Grade III-winning son Stratford Hill (A.P. Indy) coincidentally stands stud in Saudi Arabia.

Giant Win is the dam of a 2-year-old colt by Cairo Prince, a yearling colt by Liam's Map and is due to Twirling Candy this term.

Forbidden Kingdom (American Pharoah) upset the highly touted Bob Baffert trio to register a front-running victory in Santa Anita's GII San Vicente S. Saturday. Longshot What in Blazes (Straight Fire) burst from the outside post in this five-horse affair with the rest of the field breaking in tandem to his inside. Forbidden Kingdom sprinted up the fence to take command with Grade I winner Pinehurst (Twirling Candy) and his stablemate McLaren Vale (Gun Runner) tracking from about a half-length back through a :21.86 opening quarter. 'TDN Rising Star' Doppelganger (Into Mischief) shadowed his two Baffert barnmates and What in Blazes watched from last after his sharp start. Carving out a half-mile in :44.49, Forbidden Kingdom showed the way into the lane and continued strongly to the wire for a good-looking 2 1/4-length victory. The rest of the field maintained their positions to the finish.

“He's as quick as they come,” said Richard Mandella, who indicated his colt would make his next start Mar. 5 in the GII San Felipe S. “In his last race, he tore a piece of his foot off [after stumbling at the start] and then we had a quarter crack. We had to fix it up and it is good and we hope it stays good. We'll have to try two turns down the road here. He's gotten better about everything. He was so professional today, everything went well. He used to get a little antsy in the gate. He's stumbled a few times.”

Forbidden Kingdom went wire-to-wire in his 5 1/2-panel unveiling at Del Mar Aug. 21. Third next out in the turf sprint Speakeasy S. at Santa Anita Oct. 1, he led every step of the way of Del Mar's seven-panel GIII Bob Hope S. Nov. 14, only to be run down by the Baffert-trained 'TDN Rising Star' Messier (Empire Maker) and forced to settle for second, beaten 3 1/2 lengths.

Pedigree Notes:

Forbidden Kingdom is the 13th graded winner and 24th black-type victory for Triple Crown hero American Pharoah. He is out of GSW Just Louise, who is a half-sister to MGSW Sara Louise (Malibu Moon). The 14-year-old mare is also the dam of a juvenile colt by Bolt d'Oro, who summoned $275,000 from Vekoma Holdings at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale, and a 2021 filly by Not This Time. She is currently in foal to Tiz the Law.
