The TDN's popular annual series 'Mating Plans, presented by Spendthrift,' continues today in a conversation with Haymarket Farm's Chip Montgomery.

“I've always been enamored with the deep pedigrees of the stalwarts of the industry and have gravitated recently to granddaughters, etc. of Personal Ensign, My Flag and Storm Flag Flying,” said Montgomery. “About once a quarter, I will put on the video of the 1988 Breeders' Cup Distaff to hear Tom Durkin's call of Personal Ensign's nose win against Winning Colors to retire undefeated. It's an honor to own several fillies and mares with this royal blood in their veins, and makes me proud to be a Kentuckian!”

BLESSING THE FLAG, 6, (Distorted Humor–Fly the Flag, by Giant's Causeway). To be bred to Medaglia d'Oro.

We bought her as a yearling and made $130,000 but couldn't win a race! As a maiden, we will breed her to Medaglia d'Oro as this cross works very well, not only in the population in general, but also within her family (Vigilantes Way and Major Dude, among others).

FLY THE FLAG, 17, (Giant's Causeway–My Flag, by Easy Goer). To be bred to Upstart or Annapolis.

Honoring our investment in stallion shares here as she's in foal to Upstart (bred like Zandon and Trademark) and will likely go back to Upstart or possibly Annapolis.

STAND FOR THE FLAG, 8, (Super Saver–Raise the Flag, by Awesome Again). To be bred to Proxy.

A winner of $290,000, we bought her as a broodmare prospect and she is in foal to Olympiad and going to Proxy. Both good crosses and beautiful animals!

WYCHWOOD, 8, (Tale of the Cat–Queens Wood, by Tiznow). To be bred to Street Sense.

A daughter of a GI-producing mare, she has already produced our homebred stakes winner Cats inthe Timber (Honor Code) as her first foal. Barren this year, she will be bred to Street Sense, needing that size and two-turn power.

QUEENS WOOD, 16, (Tiznow–Salon Prive, by Private Account). To be bred to Forte.

The queen herself, currently in foal to Jackie's Warrior, will be bred to Forte, a proper cross and a powerful two-turn hopeful.

CTIMENE, 15, (Consolidator–Persimmon Hill, by Conquistador Cielo). To be bred to Mitole.

A half-sister to GI producer Once Around, she had a breakthrough stakes winner this past year with Katonah (Klimt) and is being bred to Mitole. A big, course mare, she will benefit from Mitole's sprinter physique.

GOOD TOHAVE AROUND, 4, (Good Samaritan–Ctimene, by Consolidator). To be bred to Yaupon.

A more elegant rendition of her mother, as a maiden, will be bred to the magnificent looking Yaupon.

Secret Oath (Arrogate–Absinthe Minded, by Quiet American), whose accomplishments include a win in the 2022 GI Kentucky Oaks, has been retired due to a minor problem with her right front ankle, reports trainer Wayne Lukas.

She will sell at the Fasig-Tipton November sale.

The story was first reported by Ron Flatter of Horse Racing Nation.

Owned by Rob and Stacy Mitchell, Secret Oath came down with the injury after working five furlongs in :58.60 on Sept. 28 at Churchill Downs. Lukas said that the injury caused him to keep her out of Sunday's GI Spinster S. at Keeneland and with her missing that race he did not think she could make the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff.

“She's fine and she's sound,” he said. “But she was not going to make the Spinster. Rather than try to get her back together we decided to just go ahead and sell her.”

Secret Oath, a homebred, flourished as a 3-year-old. After she won the GIII Honeybee S., Lukas ran her against males in the GI Arkansas Derby, where she finished third. The Oaks was up next and she won that race by two lengths over eventual Eclipse Award winner Nest (Curlin).

“There are about 10,000 female horses born every year and she's the only one among them who won the Oaks,” Lukas said. “Those are the one-of-a-kind accomplishments every trainer strives for.”

After the Oaks, Secret Oath lost five straight but rebounded with a decisive win in the GII Azeri S. to kick off this year's campaign. She ran four more times, a stretch that included second-place finishes in the GI Apple Blossom H., the GI La Troienne S. and the GI Personal Ensign S.

“She was a picture of consistency,” Lukas said. “She showed up every time. Whenever I ran her she was right there. Secret Oath was good every time we started her. She always hit the board.”

A year ago, the Mitchells announced that Secret Oath would be sold in the Fasig-Tipton November sale, but they changed their minds and withdrew her so that they could race her one more year.

“She's going to bring some serious money,” Lukas said. “They still own the mother and a half-sister to Secret Oath. They are a small breeding operation so she has been a real blessing for them.”

With the 76th renewal of Friday's GI Personal Ensign S. at Saratoga billed as a clash between division heavyweights Nest (Curlin) and Clairiere (Curlin), it was the other daughter in the field by Hill 'n' Dale's super sire Curlin who would prevail in a pillar-to-post mild upset. IDIOMATIC (f, 4, Curlin–Lockdown, by First Defence), a Juddmonte homebred trained by Brad Cox and ridden by Florent Geroux, threw her name into the figurative hat, winning her third consecutive graded race and first Grade I. Last year's GI Kentucky Oaks winner Secret Oath (Arrogate) outbattled Nest for second, while Clairiere never got involved over the sloppy track and finished fifth.

Idiomatic broke from the rail and quickly skipped to the lead, ears pricked while under a hold as 45-1 longshot and Midwest shipper Malloy (Outwork) tracked her through a :24.53 first quarter and a :48.84 half. Nest was third early while Secret Oath followed and the pair of Sixtythreecaliber (Gun Runner), a July 19 Spa allowance winner, and Clairiere trailed. The tempo quickened with a half-mile to go; Idiomatic still traveled easily. Approaching the eighth pole, Geroux started riding as Nest attacked from Idiomatic's outside and Secret Oath countered from the inside. Despite drifting late, Idiomatic put both away to win by a healthy four-length margin as runner-up Secret Oath outpunched Nest by just a neck. Final time for the nine furlongs was 1:49.12.

Eclipse champion Nest suffered her first defeat at the Spa, while four-time GISW Clairiere was off the board for the first time since an uncharacteristic poor effort in last year's Personal Ensign.

“Based off the paper, I felt pretty confident [my filly] could establish a pretty solid lead,” said Cox. “I liked her [on a wet track], just the way she's made, she's big but she's not real heavy. I thought she could bounce through it, I really did.”

Cox continued when asked about his thoughts on defeating Nest and Clairiere: “It's huge. They're champions. They've accomplished so much and they're still in good form. I'm very proud of her to win by a few lengths there. Big race and I'm very proud of her.”

Fresh off back-to-back wins in the July 8 GII Delaware H., despite an ugly stumble at the break, and the June 3 GIII Shawnee S. with corresponding dual triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures, Idiomatic has done her best running when loose on the lead. She's taken an interesting path to this level, debuting with a win in April of her sophomore year at Turfway Park. Five of her first six starts–sandwiched around a seven-month, mid-year break–were on the all-weather surface at Turfway. After posting three consecutive wins there to kick off her 4-year-old campaign, which included a first stakes try in the Latonia S. Mar. 25, Cox shipped her to Belmont, where she made her graded debut May 6 with a distant second behind Pass the Champagne (Flatter) in the GII Ruffian S. Idiomatic hasn't lost since.

“I want to congratulate Juddmonte, Prince Khalid, and his family for keeping the legacy going,” said Cox. “They have a tremendous operation worldwide and this is a huge update for the farm and their operation. This filly is a homebred, so it means a lot.

“The week before I ran her in the Ruffian, I told [Juddmonte's] Garrett [O'Rourke] this filly will run on the dirt. It was an unbelievable breeze. She was second that day to Pass the Champagne, but her works on the dirt have been great all spring and into the summer. She gave us a lot of confidence this spring and summer. I've been confident in her for a while.”

Pedigree Notes:

Not too many significant racing weekends in recent memory don't involve a son or daughter of Curlin as a major player. It's impossible to overstate the chestnut's prowess as a sire of racehorses. The Hill 'n' Dale stallion is indisputably one of the best stallions of this generation and, with the Personal Ensign result, currently ranks second on the leading sire list behind only Into Mischief. Those two, along with Tapit, harken back to the days of Mr. Prospector, Danzig, and Seattle Slew, a trio who also interchangeably dominated just a few decades ago. Idiomatic is one of 54 graded winners and 96 black-type winners for Curlin, and his 21st at the Grade I level.

Idiomatic is a fourth-generation Juddmonte-bred and hails from the direct female line of Broodmare of the Year Best in Show (Traffic Judge), whose daughters have been brilliant producers and are responsible for a plethora of top horses over the last 50 or so years. One of those top horses was Juddmonte homebred, 'TDN Rising Star', and champion Close Hatches (First Defence), a full-sister to Idiomatic's stakes-winning and multiple Grade I-placed dam, Lockdown. Close Hatches is the dam of Tacitus (Tapit), whose big wins included the 2019 GII Wood Memorial S. and whose placings included the GI Kentucky Derby and GI Belmont S.

Broodmare sire First Defence, another Juddmonte homebred descending from the operation's wonderful Broodmare of the Year Toussuad (El Gran Senor), has 14 stakes winners out of his daughters. He now stands in Saudi Arabia.

Lockdown died in 2022 after producing just three foals. She has an unraced 3-year-old filly named Abditory (Medaglia d'Oro) and a yearling filly by Into Mischief.

In this continuing series, we examine the past winners of significant filly/mare races by the lasting influence they've had on the breed. Up today is Saratoga's GI Personal Ensign S., renamed in 1998 to honor the undefeated Hall of Fame Phipps mare.

Originally known as the Firenze H. and then the John A. Morris H., the Personal Ensign dates to 1948. While members of the Phipps family have won six editions of the race which now holds one of the greatest names associated with the stable, Personal Ensign never actually ran in the contest.

In 1987, when the great mare was three, she had not yet returned to the races from a broken pastern bone in her left rear leg sustained as a juvenile. That year's race was run on Aug. 30; Personal Ensign would not come back until a week later in a Belmont allowance, her first start in nearly 11 months. The race would also miss the champion's dance card in 1988, but for a very different reason. She was fresh off a win over males in the GI Whitney S. just three weeks prior.

The transcendent mare's champion granddaughter, Storm Flag Flying (Storm Cat), did win the Personal Ensign S. in 2004. Like her legendary granddam, she was a Phipps homebred raised at Claiborne Farm and trained by Shug McGaughey.

Not only was Personal Ensign an unblemished champion on the racetrack, she also was named Broodmare of the Year in 1996. She produced one champion, three Grade I winners, and a dynasty through her daughters that is still churning out major winners today, including 2023's GISW Arabian Lion (Justify), who is set to run in Saturday's GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial S., and GSW Major Dude (Bolt d'Oro).

Following are highlights of some of the most important Personal Ensign winners by what impact they've had on the sport through their sons and daughters.

Cavorting (2012, Bernardini–Promenade Girl, by Carson City), bred by Swettenham Stud: A mare this young with two stakes winners to her name wouldn't normally make a list of matriarchs, but one of her foals is Clairiere (Curlin), a four-time GISW and 5-2 morning-line second choice in this year's Personal Ensign.

Heavenly Prize (1991, Seeking the Gold–Oh What a Dance, by Nijinsky II), bred by Ogden Phipps: This Phipps homebred and Hall of Famer produced MGISW Good Reward (Storm Cat), as well as GSW and good sire Pure Prize (Storm Cat). Her descendants include GISW Persistently (Smoke Glacken), a 2010 Personal Ensign winner for Phipps Stable, as well as more recent GISWs Instilled Regard (Arch) and Queen Goddess (Empire Maker).

Number (1979, Nijinsky II–Special, by Forli {Arg}), bred by Claiborne Farm: Japanese champion and MG1SW Gold Dream (Jpn) (Gold Allure {Jpn}), Breeders' Cup and GI Met Mile winner Corinthian (Pulpit), French G1 winner and Japanese sire Jade Robbery (Mr. Prospector), and a 'number' of other graded performers trace to this incredibly well-bred mare from one of the most 'special' families in the stud book.

Relaxing (1976, Buckpasser–Marking Time, by To Market), bred by Ogden Phipps: How fitting that this mare's greatest son would be bred to Personal Ensign, resulting in that mare's greatest daughter, My Flag. This 1989 Broodmare of the Year produced champion and Classic winner Easy Goer (Alydar), as well as GI winners Cadillacing (Alydar) and Easy Now (Danzig). Her descendants include GISW Strolling Along (Danzig), MGSW Cat Cay (Pleasant Colony), and MGSW & MGISP Abaco (Giant's Causeway).

Sugar Plum Time (1972, Bold Ruler–Plum Cake, by Ponder), bred by Calumet Farm: A number of big winners trace to this mare, who was the first Phipps mare to win the then-Firenze, although she wasn't a homebred. Among her descendants are GISWs Grand Slam (Gone West), Christmas Kid (Lemon Drop Kid), and Kudos (Kris S.); MGSW Christmas Gift (Green Desert); and MSW & MGISP Bright Candles (El Gran Senor).

Kittiwake (1968, Sea Bird {Fr}–Ole Liz, by Double Jay), bred by Martin Andersen: This bay Florida-bred produced French G1SW Kitwood (Nureyev), six-time GISW Miss Oceana (Alydar), and MGSW & GISP Larida (Northern Dancer). Among the top horses tracing to her are European champion and MG1SW Dawn Approach (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), GISW Aruna (Mr. Greeley), and English G1SW Magic of Life (Seattle Slew).

Obeah (1965, Cyane–Book of Verse, by One Count), bred by Bertram N. Linder: There may not be a big placeholder for this mare in the breeding annals as her two best foals to make it to the breeding shed–MGSW/MGISP Dance Spell (Northern Dancer) and GSW/GISP Discorama (Northern Dancer)–weren't able to leave a significant mark. Regardless, this mare will forever command a special place in racing due to her beloved champion daughter Go for Wand (Deputy Minister), who was lost too soon.

Straight Deal (1962, Hail to Reason–No Fiddling, by King Cole), bred by Bieber-Jacobs Stable: Desiree (Raise a Native) was the sole Grade I winner produced by this champion, whose multi-year racing campaigns meant she didn't have her first foal until age 10. However, her daughters certainly gave her an assist, with descendants including MGISW Adored (Seattle Slew); Breeders' Cup winner Dangerous Midge (Lion Heart); GISWs Qualify (Danzig), Scorpion (Seattle Slew), and Alwajeeha (Dixieland Band); MGSW and good sire Belong to Me (Danzig); and popular MGSW and GI Kentucky Derby runner-up Eight Belles (Unbridled's Song).

Blue Banner (1952, War Admiral–Risque Blue, by Blue Larkspur), bred by Mrs. John D. Hertz: This lovely bay produced a Broodmare of the Year in Key Bridge (Princequillo {GB}), who in turn produced Horse of the Year Fort Marcy (Amerigo {GB}), champion and influential sire Key to the Mint (Graustark), additional GISW Key to Content (Forli {Arg}), and GSW Key to the Kingdom (Bold Ruler). Others tracing to the then-Firenze winner include European champion and MG1SW Silver Patriarch (Ire) (Saddlers' Hall {Ire}), English highweight and G1SW Papineau (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}), and Brazilian champion Mensageiro Alado (Brz) (Ghadeer {Fr}).

Rare Treat (1952, Stymie–Rare Perfume, by Eight Thirty), bred by Erdenheim Farms Co: Among her descendants are European champion and G1 Epsom Derby winner Golden Fleece (Nijinsky II); U.S. champion What a Treat (Tudor Minstrel {Ire}); French G1SWs Mandaean (GB) (Manduro {Ger}) and Wavering (Ire) (Refuse To Bend {Ire}); U.S. GISWs Victory Speech (Deputy Minister) and Ida Delta (Graustark); and European MGSW Be My Guest (Northern Dancer), England's leading sire in 1982.

Parlo (1951, Heliopolis {GB}–Fairy Palace, by Pilate), bred by William duPont, Jr.: Horse of the Year Arts and Letters (Ribot {GB}), champion Silverbulletday (Silver Deputy), MGISW Waquoit (Relaunch), and Chilean champion All Glory (Honour and Glory) are among the top horses that trace to this diminutive chestnut, who also produced Broodmare of the Year All Beautiful (Battlefield).

In this continuing series, we examine the past winners of significant filly/mare races by the lasting influence they've had on the breed. Up today is Belmont Park's GI Belmont Oaks Invitational S., now the first leg in New York's Turf Tiara series for 3-year-old fillies on the lawn.

Originally known as the Rare Perfume and then the Garden City, the Belmont Oaks under its current name has only been in existence since 2014, although the race itself dates to 1979. The history may not be long and some of the winners were better racemares than producers, but a trio of particularly illustrious future broodmares stands out.

Following are highlights of some of the most important Belmont Oaks winners by what impact they've had on the sport through their sons and daughters.

Sky Beauty (1990, Blushing Groom {Fr}–Maplejinsky, by Nijinsky II), bred by Sugar Maple Farm: Early in her broodmare career, she sold for $2.85 million at Keeneland and would produce just a handful of more foals, with the best on the track being England's GSW Hurricane Cat (Storm Cat). However, her great-grandson Violence is keeping her name relevant today. He's currently among the top 10 leading sires in the U.S. for 2023 by earnings.

November Snow (1989, Storm Cat–Princess Alydar, by Alydar), bred by D. J. Stable and Overbrook Farm: Although she didn't produce a stakes winner herself, November Snow's daughters have done her proud.
Personal Ensign (1984, Private Account–Grecian Banner, by Hoist the Flag), bred by Ogden Phipps: This grand mare has to be among the sport's best examples of what a top racemare remodeling into a top broodmare can look like. Considered one of the best fillies or mares of the 20th century as an undefeated champion and Breeders' Cup winner, Personal Ensign's foals included GISWs My Flag (Easy Goer), Miner's Mark (Mr. Prospector), and Traditionally (Mr. Prospector), as well as MGISP Our Emblem (Mr. Prospector). Her descendants through her daughters include champion Storm Flag Flying (Storm Cat); Breeders' Cup winner Seeking the Soul (Perfect Soul {Ire}); GISWs Mr Speaker (Pulpit) and Arabian Lion (Justify); and a plethora of other graded winners, including recent MGSW Major Dude (Bolt d'Oro).

He hasn't got all day; nor, doubtless, do you. So let's cut to the chase. We won't dwell on the journey that has made Dr. Larry Bramlage a doyen of orthopedic science, in its daily application to the racehorse: not the alphabet soup of honors and distinctions, nor the long experience that has honed the sharpest diagnostic eye in the business through 23 years with Rood and Riddle. We have simply dropped into the clinic, on a recent visit to Lexington, to direct a brief sunbeam of his knowledge and insight into the practices of those who depend for a living on the miraculous but fragile equilibrium of the bones that support a Thoroughbred.

“Racehorses are so good because they produce their skeleton based upon what they do,” Bramlage begins. “They're not born with it. Their skeleton is the minimum weight that they can produce and still carry them around the racetrack. So they have a big engine, but their undercarriage is no heavier than it needs to be. And that's why they're fast.”

That's true, in some evolutionary measure, of all horses–and other animals, too, people included.

“The skeleton is different than hearts and lungs and muscles,” Bramlage explains. “Those train to a volume of work that you're doing. Skeleton trains to the level of work that you do.”

He recalls a series of experiments conducted on turkeys some years ago, where one wing was restricted and the fowls learned to flap the other to get food. The idea was to establish how many cycles of this activity were required to stimulate bone.

“Well, it's interesting,” Bramlage says. “Because when you reach 36 cycles in a day, that's the maximum the bone will respond to. You can go to 2,000 and it won't get any stronger than in those 36. And that's what makes a trainer's job tough. Because they have to push the horses hard enough, that they get strong enough to carry themselves around the racetrack. But if you do too much, then those extra cycles begin to be destructive.”

Those 36 cycles, for our purposes, apparently equate to about a furlong. Which, Bramlage explains, means that your fastest eighth will be the level for which your horse produces bone. Obviously that doesn't happen overnight, albeit bone is far more dynamic than most laymen assume.

“But the stimulus is there that it'll try to reach that next level before the exercise does,” Bramlage explains. “And then you repeat that over and over, and eventually the skeleton gets appropriate enough that you don't acquire any damage during those 36 cycles. So while there's some always ongoing wear-and-tear, the most important part of making a racehorse is usually up to four or five races. Once they get there, their skeleton is virtually made.”

The living nature of bone, however, does mean that the “made” skeleton can regress once taken out of training. But Bramlage is keen to address a misapprehension, which took root maybe a decade ago, that persistently galloping a young horse creates the foundation for a strong skeleton.

“Galloping a horse a lot helps the heart and lungs–but once you go past those 36 cycles in a day, the rest of them are just wear-and-tear,” he explains. “A lot of horses were actually harmed by excess galloping.”

Previously there had also been the attempt to extrapolate the principles of interval training, in human athletes. “I knew a couple of people who, as runners themselves, were going to interval train and beat everybody,” he recalls. “And they ended up with 4-year-old maidens with splints on their hind legs. Because the skeleton just can't take that that many fast intervals. In people, the limiting system is the heart and lungs, not the skeleton. Horses have such great heart and lungs that, unless they're bleeders, they virtually never limit. The horse's heart and lungs can respond to anything you throw at them. But the skeleton has to do it in little stair steps. And that's how, in young horses especially, the heart and lungs often get ahead of the skeleton.”

Though the tibia also registers trouble here–it absorbs a lot of force, in locking the reciprocal motion of stifle and hock–the most familiar symptom is shin trouble.

“You go too fast, the wear-and-tear begins to exceed the response and you get bucked shins,” Bramlage continues. “Shins have to triple in size. The front cortex of a cannon bone in a 'made' racehorse is three times thicker than in the yearling that started training.”

So how does this translate, ideally, into building up a young horse towards a race? Bramlage suggests a pretty familiar scenario: one or two furlongs at a rather higher level than the rest of the exercise, in effect showing the skeleton where it's going to be asked to go in three days' time. The real skill, in training, is monitoring attitude.

“People ask, what makes a good trainer?” he says. “For me, it's an easy question. It's being able to understand when the horse is happy and when he's not. When horses are adapting well, they're happy to train. When a horse starts not wanting to go to the track in the morning, not wanting to load in the gate, those are the kind of things you need to look out for. It's a real art for trainers to understand when to push a horse and when to back off.”

Obviously you would hope that trial and error, over the generations, should have brought horsemen's intuitions pretty close to where they might land through learned science.

“If you go back to when Aiken, South Carolina, was the winter training center–because that's how far the railroad went south–they would have the Aiken trials and those 2-year-olds, early on, would be breezing an eighth,” Bramlage says. “Those short breezes were actually very useful to the horses. Especially when you're making the horse, it's a matter of trying to train heart and lungs–because you have to do that–without overtraining the skeleton.”

When a horse is past that stage, but has to be laid off training, the skeleton will not lose much strength through the first month but the situation will change pretty rapidly after two months. And a more significant spell, say four months, notoriously invites humeral or tibial stress fractures in a small number of horses: again, because heart and lungs train back so much faster than the skeleton.

Needless to say, by the time a horse is sent into the clinic, they have typically signaled a loss of form.

“If a horse has swelling in a knee or ankle, those guys at the racetrack pick it up,” Bramlage says. “These horses [sent into the clinic] don't have any obvious pain, heat or swelling, but their form has gone down. And a lot of times they have either bilateral lameness–two fronts or two hinds, sometimes all four–or they're just early wear-and-tear injuries. I think most of the really successful trainers today understand better than they did 10 years ago that the horse is subject to that wear-and-tear; and that whenever a horse is not giving you what it can, then you need to start looking.”

Parallel advances have been made in imaging technology. It is barely 30 years since radiographs were still processed on celluloid. Digital radiographs have themselves improved dramatically, and now scanning in three dimensions via CAT and MRI and ultimately PET is available.

“Nuclear imaging was a huge tool because those scans allowed us to look for stress fractures that didn't have any outward clinical signs,” Bramlage says. “But whenever regulators think in terms of needing a PET scan to monitor horses at the racetrack, that's not really true. You need to look at them and identify the horse that needs to be looked at, not scan them all. Most of those can be unraveled using all the tools we currently have. It's just a matter of knowing when you need to look. And so more than we need more equipment, we just need to look more often.”

The role of regulatory veterinarian is a contentious and evolving one. The process is being aided, however, by a growing injury database to succeed anecdotal assumption. Already Bramlage can see where this might take the profession.

“It may not hit during my lifetime, but I think the next really exciting revolution, which is going to totally change our care of racehorses, is digital timing,” he says. “It just makes sense that it will eventually move away from clockers and all be done passively, automatically, by the equipment. Well, when you have that data, it's not a real hard step to write an algorithm that identifies [problems that may be brewing].

“You could look at a horse's exercise fingerprint because stride length and stride cycle is pretty stable for individual horses. When the length begins to shorten, he's protecting something. And so each horse will have his own digital fingerprint, and this will be automatically recorded every time a horse works, every time they race. And all of a sudden you can say, 'This horse is getting into trouble.'”

Some early research has detected patterns that might anticipate injury as many as three races ahead. Bramlage can see a future where every horse will transmit data to central monitoring for red flags. For now, until the necessary technology is available, it falls to people like Bramlage to determine the level of risk that warrants its prohibitive cost.

“But I think that in the next generation beyond me, that will become automated,” he predicts. “And that will revolutionize the prevention of injuries. It'll be the best thing that ever happened.”

And that's one of the things that maintains such youthful enthusiasm in a septuagenarian who has already witnessed such transformation in the tools of his trade: the curve is only going to steepen.

Aside from digital radiography, the biggest leaps forward have been internal screws and plates; plus arthroscopy and its adaptation from diagnosis to treatment. For internal fixation, the initial debt was apparently to a Swiss cost-benefit analysis of chronic disagreement between tibias and ski-boots. Of arthroscopy, meanwhile, Bramlage muses: “Surgery never used to happen until there wasn't anything else you could do. Then with the arthroscope it became easier, quicker, better. And so now that is the first line of defense. The horse gets a chip fracture, they take it out right away. The joint doesn't degenerate, they go back to normal.”

Horsemen nowadays have gained faith that condylar fractures can be routinely secured. One of Bramlage's most celebrated patients, Personal Ensign, went a long way to changing perceptions. Nowadays you'll find many a Breeders' Cup winner with a screw lurking somewhere in its skeleton. It's a very different world from when Bramlage started out, and yet he feels we have barely started.

“Yeah, we were dipping X-rays in chemical solutions when I was a student,” he reflects. “But the young veterinarians right now will probably see the same explosion. Probably in the biologic areas: the understanding of cell biology, and cell communication, is doing the same ramp up. The ability to treat is going to be much more pointed and effective than now.”

Bramlage is acutely aware of our industry's exposure to an ever more urban society that professes ever fiercer vigilance on behalf of animals with which it typically has little interaction, certainly compared with generations past. In that respect, veterinary regulation manifestly has a front-line role. He's excited, then, that a digital fingerprint might give mute animals a new way of telling doctor what's wrong.

Even with the advent of such tools, however, Bramlage believes that the essential mystique of the Thoroughbred will endure. We might be able to explain how everything fits together, and learn how to put things back together, but the key to performance will remain elusive.

“And actually I hope we never do get to that point where we understand everything about a horse,” he admits. “Because I think that's what's intriguing to people. You can improve your odds by improving your breeding. You can keep the horse healthy, you can have a trainer that's capable to that level. You can do all those things, but you still can't just go buy a Derby winner.

“Every horse is a product of a dip out of the gene pool. It's not a one-to-one combination of the mare and the stallion. There are all sorts of units. Like you've got four genes that cause eye color in people. There are all those different combinations of things. So to combine whatever comes out of that gene pool with the mental capacity, to train hard enough and compete hard enough, you never know which horse is going to have it.”

He chuckles, and asks whether you ever heard of a racing mule named Black Ruby?

“Well, she was on the California fair circuit for about 10 years and there was only one other mule could occasionally beat her,” he explains. “But they cloned her several times, and none of them could beat me. They had the exact same genetic makeup, but none of them would run like that. So that elusive factor, I think, is what keeps people intrigued. And I hope we never identify that.”

Even his exceptionally intimate professional relationship with horses, ranging from Personal Ensign to claimers at Ellis Park, has only marginally clarified the enigma.

“I don't know that there's any one thing,” he says with a shrug. “Good horses are always physically attractive, well balanced. They're almost always smart, they're very intelligent, very adaptable.”

Does that make better horses better patients, too?

“Absolutely,” he replies. “But racehorses are the best patients anyway, in my opinion. The worst patient is the 4H horse that's never felt anything but a rub rag, because when they have to deal with pain, you never know how they're going to handle it. But racehorses are just like people who train hard: you're stiff and sore next day and then it goes away and you feel better than you did before you started. They have better survival instinct.”

And while recruitment to equine practice is becoming harder, given the reduced social exposure nowadays between young people and horses, Bramlage guarantees endless fascination to the next generation. The measure of your work, he says, is so much more gratifying than in small animal practice.

“I think equine practitioners tend to practice a lot longer because there's another level of assessment,” he says. “Your horses have to go back and run. They have to win barrel races. They have to win ribbons, if they're a backyard horse they have to trail-ride. There's a couple of books I read, discussing why do armies fight? It's mostly not for abstract ideals. They fight for the people next to them, the people they trained with, the things they know and the fear of failure. And I think this level of assessment, with the possibility that you'll fail, but the rewards when you succeed, it's higher in horses.”

And there are literally hundreds of horsemen in the Bluegrass who will be relieved to hear him say that. “I could easily be retired,” he says. “At some point, physically it's not going to be possible to continue. But I think that's why people stick around. I mean, when the success barometer is the dog being able to get up on the sofa? That's not quite as intriguing!”

In this continuing series, we examine the past winners of significant filly/mare races by the lasting influence they've had on the breed. Up today is Belmont's GI Frizette S., a race with a tremendous amount of repercussion on the sport.

The 1905 mare Frizette, for whom this 2-year-old filly race is named, may have been just a minor sprint stakes winner, but she was an absolute giant in the breeding shed. A foundation mare in both the U.S. and France, Frizette's descendants through her daughters include one of yesteryear's top French sires, Tourbillon (Fr), and modern U.S. stalwarts Mr. Prospector and Seattle Slew. Among the long list of top performers tracing to her are stars as varied as Dr. Fager and Dahlia, and many, many more.

How fitting then that among the 74 previous winners of the Frizette, which was inaugurated in 1945, a number would become breed-shaping broodmares in their own right.

Some of the Frizette winners who belong on this list were previously featured in our “Background Checks” for the GI Alabama S., GI Test S., and/or GIII Schuylerville S.; please see those earlier profiles for notes on Phipps homebreds Numbered Account and Heavenly Prize and the Florida-bred Meadow Star.

Following are the some of the other most important Frizette winners by what impact they have had on the sport through their sons and daughters.

Dreaming of Julia (2010, A.P. Indy–Dream Rush, by Wild Rush): This Stonestreet homebred's only foal to make it to the races thus far is Malathaat, last year's champion 3-year-old filly after her 2021 wins included the GI Kentucky Oaks, GI Alabama S., and the GI Ashland S. She was last seen taking Saratoga's GI Personal Ensign S. Sept. 27.

Preach (1989, Mr. Prospector–Narrate, by Honest Pleasure): A fourth-generation Claiborne homebred, Preach's indelible mark on the breed will forever be through her first foal, fellow Claiborne homebred and MGSW Pulpit. Not only did he have a number of top runners as a stallion, but he's been a noted sire of sires, most especially due to his exceptional multiple-leading sire son Tapit.

Personal Ensign (1984, Private Account–Grecian Banner, by Hoist the Flag): A horse can't do any more than this grand girl did. She was perfection: an undefeated champion as a racehorse and a Broodmare of the Year in her second career. A Phipps family homebred, Personal Ensign produced MGISW My Flag, as well as GISWs Miner's Mark and Traditionally. Her daughters have produced a number of top-flight runners, including champion Storm Flag Flying, who emulated her granddam and won the Frizette in 2002; GISWs Mr Speaker and Seeking the Soul; and this summer's GII Suburban S. winner Dynamic One.

Regal Gleam (1964, Hail to Reason–Miz Carol, by Stymie): A number of high-caliber horses trace to this Bieber-Jacobs Stable runner, none better than her grandson Caerleon. A Group 1 winner in both England and France, he later distinguished himself with leading sire titles in both England and Ireland.

Priceless Gem (1963, Hail to Reason–Searching, by War Admiral): Like Regal Gleam, above, Bieber-Jacobs Stable bred this lovely mare, whose most important foal was French Horse of the Year and G1 Prix d l'Arc de Triomphe victress Allez France. She's also the ancestress of GISWs Al Mamoon, La Gueriere, Ordway, Honor in War, and Icon Project, as well as of current top 10 leading sire Munnings.

My Dear Girl (1957, Rough'n Tumble–Iltis, by War Relic): Not too many mares produce seven stakes winners and not many leave a sire son as impactful as In Reality. Among his best runners and stallion sons were Relaunch, Known Fact, and Believe It, while the legacies left out of his daughters included Broodmare of the Year Toussaud. My Dear Girl was bred in Florida by Ocala Stud Farms.

Bimlette (1944, Bimelech–Bloodroot, by Blue Larkspur): Bred by E. R. Bradley's Idle Hour Stock Farm and out of the 1946 Broodmare of the Year, Bimlette delivered three stakes winners, including 1963 Wood Memorial winner and sire No Robbery. Champion and Breeders' Cup winner Beautiful Pleasure and her full-brother, MGISW Mecke, both trace to her, as does champion Tempest Queen, GISW Dream Dancing, a host of other GSWs, and a current leading sire in New York, Mission Impazible.

Behind every winning race is a winning ride, and the Breeders' Cup has produced some of the most impressive piloting efforts the sport has seen.

When considering those winning trips, a share of the credit must, of course, go to the jockey's agents who booked the mounts for their riders. An agent knows a good ride when they see it.

With 37 years of Breeders' Cup races to draw from, we polled six jockey's agents to get their picks for the greatest riding effort in Breeders' Cup history. The answers cast a wide net from personal victories, to betting scores, to rooting for childhood heroes.

Doug Bredar

“For obvious reasons, it would be Gun Runner in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar. I'm still surprised that Arrogate went off as the favorite. The bettors thought that Gun Runner would have issues going a mile and a quarter, but the connections felt otherwise. Arrogate had beaten him a couple of times, and it was not only an incredible thrill watching Florent Geroux win the race, but redemption for the way he did it. The fractions were 22.4, 46.1, 1:10.2 and 1:35. He went wire-to-wire and I thought it was an exceptional ride. Very fond memories of a special race.”

“Arazi and Zenyatta are the most impressive horse races I've seen. Even when Zenyatta ran second, she was impressive. Alysheba and Personal Ensign are my favorite wins. My favorite ride was Pat Day on Wild Again in the 1984 Classic.”

“Randy Romero on Personal Ensign in the mud getting up the last jump to nail Gary Stevens on Winning Colors (1988 Distaff). He was my idol as a kid and I couldn't have been more happy and proud of him.”

“Pat Valenzuela aboard Fraise in the 1992 Turf stands out the most. It was the first Breeders' Cup that I was old enough to 'legally' bet and I put $100 across the board on him. He came from last and P-Val made every right move weaving his way through the pack through the turn. When they straightened, he dove down and snuck through along the fence and nipped Sky Classic right on the money. There's no other path that he could've taken and had the same result.”

“Gulch in the 1988 Sprint. Angel Cordero Jr. was masterful!”

Brian Beach

“Julie Krone's ride on Halfbridled in the 2003 Juvenile Fillies was one of the best I've seen. It's not always about weaving though traffic and getting up at the wire. It's sometimes about getting your horse to perform its best under adverse circumstances, and that's what happened in this race. They broke from the 14 post and Julie was able to get her filly to relax while going wide and still not expending too much energy until she could get a better position down the backstretch. By the time they turned for home Julie had Halfbridled in a perfect winning position with something left in the tank for the run to the wire.”
