The breeding game is rooted in patience, but any long-term strategy is best balanced out with some short-term yields, and a high-performing Pennsylvania-bred and -sired juvenile can provide just that.

Through the first 10 months of the year, no 2-year-old displayed that better than Notice of Action, a Hoppertunity colt who brought in a combined $178,800 in state incentive awards to his various connections through Oct. 31. That made him the second-highest earner of Pennsylvania incentives in 2023 through that time period, trailing only the 4-year-old Twisted Ride at $178,944.

Notice of Action went unbeaten in three starts through the end of October, all at Parx Racing, running for owner Andy Hawthorne and trainer Bobbi Anne Hawthorne.

The colt put the Pennsylvania-bred juvenile ranks on notice in his debut, a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight on Aug. 21, where he led at every point of call and drew away to win by four lengths.

After an eye-popping debut, Notice of Action rocketed up the class ladder to test the Prince Lucky Stakes, a 6 1/2-furlong sprint for Pennsylvania-bred and -sired juveniles on Sept. 23. He was never far off the pace in the Prince Lucky under jockey Andy Hernandez, and after drawing clear in the stretch, he fended off a late charge from Lost and Confused to prevail by a half-length.

Notice of Action closed out the run with a six-furlong allowance optional claiming race on Oct. 25, where he decimated the field by five lengths.

In addition to the purse money, Notice of Action earned the Hawthornes $12,000 in owner bonuses. Depending on the track within the state, owner bonuses can tack on a boost of up to 40 percent on an overnight race's purse.

Notice of Action was bred in Pennsylvania by Bryan Minnich, out of the unraced Jump Start mare Be a Gem. His three-race winning streak earned Minnich $67,920 in breeders' awards.

For horses bred and sired in Pennsylvania, breeders earn a 50 percent bonus on purse earnings for maiden races run within the state. Runners bred in the state but sired by a horse standing elsewhere are eligible for a 25 percent bonus. For all other races within the Keystone State, runners bred and sired in Pennsylvania can earn a 40 percent bonus, while those by out-of-state sires earn their breeders a 20 percent bonus.

The colt also earned Northview Stallion Station, owner of sire Hoppertunity, $16,080 in stallion awards.

The owner of a Pennsylvania-based stallion at the time of a foal's conception is eligible for stallion awards generated by that foal. Stallion owners receive 10 percent of the purse earned when a registered Pennsylvania-bred and- sired runner finishes in the top three in any pari-mutuel race within the state.

Another six-figure earner of Pennsylvania incentives was Aoife's Magic, who brought in a combined $138,600 awards through the end of October.

The daughter of Smarty Jones won both of her starts in that timeframe, both at Parx, taking a maiden special weight by 10 3/4 lengths, then winning the Imply Stakes by 4 1/4. David Dotolo trains Aoife's Magic for owner A and J Racing Stable.

Aoife's Magic was bred in Pennsylvania by Mohns Hill Farm, which picked up a $45,120 breeder's award for the filly's first two wins. Patricia Chapman, owner of champion Smarty Jones, earned $10,680 in stallion awards from her success.

Though it closed its Pennsylvania branch at the close of the 2020 breeding season, Northview Stallion Station still has a massive presence in the Keystone State's breeding program through the sons and daughters of the stallions that resided there.

Through the end of September, Northview Stallion Station leads all entities by Pennsylvania stallion award earnings, with $314,838. Coming in second was WynOaks Farm at $159,062.

The owner of a Pennsylvania-based stallion at the time of a foal's conception is eligible for stallion awards generated by that foal. Stallion owners receive 10 percent of the purse earned when a registered Pennsylvania-bred and -sired runner finishes in the top three in any pari-mutuel race within the state.

Leading the way among the Northview stallions is the late Jump Start, who tallied $108,115 in stallion awards through the first nine months of 2023. Jump Start was a perennial leader among Pennsylvania stallions by award earnings for nearly a decade, giving him a deep pipeline of runners to continue earning.

His top earner of stallion awards through the first three quarters of 2023 was Hey Mamaluke, who brought in $7,350 for Northview. The 7-year-old mare has won twice in 2023, and once in Pennsylvania. After taking an allowance optional claiming race in March at Aqueduct, Hey Mamaluke has bounced between several states in the Mid-Atlantic, returning to her home state to win a rained-off-the-turf edition of the Power By Far Stakes by a head on June 26 at Parx Racing.

Hey Mamaluke races as a homebred for Joe Capriglione, and she is trained by Patricia Farro.

Hey Mamaluke #2 wins the $100,000 Penn's Landing at Parx Racing in Bensalem, PA on March 7, 2022.
Northview was also helped greatly by Uncle Lino, a Grade 1-placed stakes-winning son of Uncle Mo who entered stud in 2017. His slate of Pennsylvania-sired runners have reaped $99,846 in stallion awards.

The biggest earner among them is One More Scoop, a 4-year-old gelding who has contributed $12,720 in stallion awards. One More Scoop has won four times this year, twice each at Parx Racing and Penn National.

The centerpiece of his 2023 resume is a half-length victory in the Fabulous Strike Stakes, a six-furlong race on Aug. 18 at Penn National where he sat in second, stalking the leader, before moving in the stretch and getting up in the final jumps. Kathleen Damasi trains One More Scoop for owner Shooting Star Stable.

Rounding out the trio of Northview stallions who made the top 10 by stallion award earnings was Hoppertunity, who had cashed in $58,625 through September.

The Grade 1-winning son of Any Given Saturday's top earner of stallion awards was Notice of Action, bringing in $11,880.

Owned by Andy Hawthorne and trained by Bobbi Anne Hawthorne, the 2-year-old colt is unbeaten in three starts at Parx, two of which came before the end of September. After breaking his maiden by a front-running four lengths on Aug. 21, Notice of Action made a successful jump in competition, holding on to win the 6 1/2-furlong Prince Lucky Stakes by a half-length on Sept, 23.

The final class of Northview-sired runners from the operation's former location in Peach Bottom, Pa., were born in 2021, making them 2-year-olds of 2023. While the pipeline for runners might have reached its end, the farm figures to continue having a presence at or near the top of this list as those last runners mature and continue to run and win at high levels.

Once Weigelia finally usurped longtime leader Jump Start's position at the top of Pennsylvania's pecking order by state stallion incentive earnings, he hasn't looked back. Even so, there might be someone nipping at his heels.

Weigelia, a 22-year-old son of Safely's Mark owned by Wyn Oaks Farm, has amassed $142,133 in Pennsylvania stallion awards through Aug. 31; just over $10,000 more than second-place Uptowncharlybrown at $131,713.

The leading contributor to Weigelia's coffer in 2023 is Disco Ebo, who earned $16,996 in stallion awards through Aug. 31.

Disco Ebo has been a top earner of Pennsylvania incentive monies across the various ways a state-bred can make money for their connections, despite the fact that the 4-year-old filly hasn't run since mid-April.

Owned by the partnership of Cash is King and LC Racing, Disco Ebo won her first three starts of the season, all at Parx Racing, culminating in a 6 3/4-length drubbing of the Penn's Landing Stakes on March 7. She then finished second in the Unique Bella Stakes at Parx on April 24 in her last start to date.

The Robert E. Reid Jr. trainee has been training consistently toward a return at Parx Racing, most recently breezing four furlongs in :47.69 seconds on Oct. 17, making her the third-fastest at the distance among 27 that day.

Another familiar name has also kicked in plenty to Weigelia's stallion incentive earnings this year, in Beren.

Another Reid trainee, this time for St. Omer's Farm and Christopher J Feifarek, Beren started the year with a pair of allowance wins at Parx, with a third in the Grade 3 General George Stakes at Laurel Park sandwiched in between. Though this season hasn't seen as many high profile wins as followers have become used to seeing from Beren, she has finished in the money in the Page McKenney Handicap and the Banjo Picker Sprint Stakes, both at Parx.

Uptowncharlybrown's bid to surpass Weigelia has been led by Marion Grace, a 3-year-old filly who has tallied $7,672 for her sire.

Owned and trained by Jacinto Solis, Marion Grace started her season with a maiden claiming victory at Parx Racing, and she picked up two more claiming victories at the same track later in the year. Originally campaigned as a homebred by Uptowncharlybrown Stud, the owner of the namesake stallion, Marion Grace has been claimed twice this year, joining the Solis barn for a $25,000 tag after finishing second by a neck in a July 26 Parx claiming race.

Disco Ebo set the early pace among Pennsylvania incentive award earners for the 2023 season, and Weigelia filly has maintained that advantage through the early summer months, bringing in $193,952 to her various connections for her Keystone State roots.

That figure was compiled with Pennsylvania breeder's awards, stallion owner's awards, and owner's bonuses through July 31, creating one of the country's most lucrative incentive structures.

Disco Ebo earned her spot at the top of the list over the course of four starts, all at Parx Racing.

On Jan. 24, Disco Ebo took a four-wide trip through to a powerful stretch drive to prevail in a six-furlong race by two lengths under jockey Frankie Pennington. The same rider was aboard on Feb. 15 when Disco Ebo led at every point of call in a 5 1/2-furlong race to win easily by 6 3/4 lengths.

Disco Ebo then entered stakes competition for the first time this season, easily going wire-to-wire in the Penn's Landing Stakes on March 7 to win by a widening 6 3/4 lengths.

The filly suffered her first and lone defeat of 2023 thus far in the Unique Bella Stakes on April 24, getting clear early, but ultimately relenting to Morning Matcha to finish second. She has not raced since the Unique Bella, but she has been working toward a return at Parx.

Robert Reid Jr. trains Disco Ebo for the partnership of Cash Is King and LC Racing. Because the filly was both bred and sired in Pennsylvania, she was eligible for a 40 percent owner bonus on her purse earnings for races at Parx. In Disco Ebo's four starts, her owners earned an additional $28,560 because of her status in the Pennsylvania-bred program.

Disco Ebo was bred in Pennsylvania by Stephen and Susan Quick's St. Omer's Farm, which earned $67,984 in breeder's awards for the filly's four starts. Horses bred and sired in the Keystone State are eligible for a 40 percent purse bonus on non-maiden races.

The filly earned WynOaks Farm, the home of sire Weigelia, $16,996 in stallion's awards. Registered Pennsylvania-breds by a state-resident sire earn a 10 percent bonus on purse for first-through-third efforts at tracks within the state.

Over the course of three seasons on the track, Disco Ebo has won eight of 17 starts and earned $488,444. Three of those victories have come in stakes company – one each at two, three, and four.

Disco Ebo is out of the winning Disco Rico mare Katarica Disco, who is the dam of 10 winners from 11 foals to race.

The cross between Weigelia and Katarica Disco has proven especially effective, also producing Smooth B, a multiple stakes winner and earner of $772,267; stakes winners Fat Kat and Fore Harp, Grade 2-placed Disco Rose, and stakes-placed Pink Princess.

The month of May is a time for 3-year-olds to shine on the Triple Crown stage, but that magic can be found close to home in Pennsylvania with sophomores born and raced in the Keystone State rewarding their connections in a variety of ways.

When it comes to raking in Pennsylvania incentives, no 3-year-old did it better through the end of May than Social Success, who brought in $64,836 after five months of racing in 2023.

The daughter of Social Inclusion is unbeaten in five starts this year, including four through the end of May. Of her four victories in the qualifying timespan, there two races each at Parx Racing and Penn National for trainer Bruce Kravets and owner/breeder Shirley Lojeski.

As both the owner and breeder of Social Success, Lojeski reaped the greatest benefits from the filly's success, led by breeder's awards totaling $48,216.

Social Success also brought in $5,040 for Lojeski in owner bonuses. Depending on the track within the state, owner bonuses can tack on a boost of up to 40 percent on an overnight race's purse.

The filly also contributed $11,580 to the coffers of the Social Inclusion Partners in stallion awards.

Social Success' season began at Penn National on Jan. 20, where she closed from near-last to take a six-furlong maiden special weight by a length. She remained at Penn National for her next start, stretching out to a mile for a Feb. 10 allowance race, where she rated a little closer to the pace and got clear in the stretch to win by two lengths.

From there, Social Success traveled to Parx to test stakes company for the first time in the March 6 Main Line Stakes, a one mile and 70-yard. Going against her usual pattern, jockey Frankie Pennington put Social Success on the lead, locked in an early duel with Gold Medal Anna. That rival eventually relented and Social Success carried on to win by 2 1/2 lengths.

Closing out the quartet of starts and wins was an April 12 Parx allowance, where Social Success asserted her dominance to a new degree, taking a one mile and 70 yard race by 11 1/4 lengths.

Social Success is out of the unplaced With Distinction mare Schuylkilla, who is also the dam of stakes-placed Just a Thought, an Uncle Lino gelding who is in the midst of his fourth season of racing in Pennsylvania.

The purse and black type benefits that come with winning a stakes race are certainly appealing, but they're not the only way to make serious money with a Pennsylvania-bred.

Through the first four months of the year, Date Night Kisses generated $63,580 through various Pennsylvania incentive programs without making a single start in stakes company.

The 4-year-old Weigelia filly earned the bulk of that total in breeder's awards for Emilie Bateman, bringing in $33,200 in that category.

Date Night Kisses is out of the winning Oratory mare Tribal Verse, who is herself a homebred for Bateman. The filly sold to Grassroots Training and Sales for $1,500 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearling Sale.

Owner Walter Doggett III benefitted from $22,080 in owner bonuses from the first four months of Date Night Kisses' 2023 campaign. Depending on the track within the state, owner bonuses can tack on a boost of up to 40 percent on an overnight race's purse.

Meanwhile, WynOaks Farm, the owner of sire Weigelia, brought in $8,300 in stallion awards from Date Night Kisses.

Through the end of April, Date Night Kisses won two of three starts and finished third in the other effort, all coming at Parx Racing.

Trained by A. Ferris Allen III, the filly began her season with a dominant front-running seven-length score in a one-mile starter allowance on Jan. 18.

She followed up on Feb. 13 with another wire-to-wire score going a mile in an allowance optional claiming race, this time repelling a late stretch drive by a rival to win by three-quarters of a length. Her final start in the four-month period was a third-place effort in an April 11 optional claimer, where a wide trip left her empty in the stretch.

The name says it all with Uptowncharlybrown Stud: the operation built upon, and geared toward continuing, the success of veteran Pennsylvania sire Uptowncharlybrown.

Through the first four months of 2023, the plan has worked as well as any in the state, with the operation leading the way by breeders' incentive earnings, totaling $182,856. Northview Stallion Station was second, with $119,365.

Of Uptowncharlybrown Stud's top 10 runners by breeder's award earnings through the end of April, eight were by the operation's flagship stallion.

Uptowncharlybrown, a Grade 2-placed stakes-winning son of Limehouse, stands at WynOaks Farm in Delta, Pa. He's developed into a perennial upper-tier sire in the state, where he currently third among Pennsylvania sires by progeny earnings, trailing only veteran sires Jump Start and Weigelia.

However, the runner that has generated the most breeder's award monies for Uptowncharlybrown Stud is by a different sire.

For the Dreamers, a 4-year-old gelding by Talent Search, produced $25,872 in breeder's awards through April 30 to lead the way.

Racing as a homebred, under the guidance of trainer Edward Coletti Jr., For the Dreamers won two of three starts during that timeframe, all at Parx Racing.

He took his seasonal debut on Jan. 11, when he bid three-wide and kicked away in the stretch to win a six-furlong allowance optional claiming race by 1 1/4 lengths. Two starts later, For the Dreamers led at every point of call to win a March 20 six-furlong claiming race by two lengths.

Among Uptowncharlybrown Stud's runners by its flagship sire, the earners of breeder's awards are led by Rolls Royce Joyce, who made $23,676 in incentives for her breeder.

The 6-year-old mare won two of five starts through the end of April, and she finished in the money in two other starts, all coming at Parx.

Like For the Dreamers, she won her seasonal bow – a 6 1/2-furlong starter optional claiming race on Jan. 4, where she held on to win by a neck. On March 6, she added another victory in another starter optional claimer at the same distance, this time rallying from the middle of the pack to prevail by three-quarters of a length.

Rolls Royce Joyce races for owner Richard Malouf and trainer Scott Lake.

After a long rein by the late Jump Start at the top of the Pennsylvania sire ranks, it appears there is a new sheriff in town.

After leading all Pennsylvania sires by stallion awards earned for the first time in 2022, Wyn Oaks Farm's Weigelia is once again setting the pace through the first quarter of 2023, leading longtime rival Jump Start by a margin of $61,206 to $44,250.

Weigelia's rapid ascent in 2023 makes plenty of sense when one accounts for the fact that the top five individual earners of stallion awards on the racetrack were each by the leading sire.

Chief among them is Disco Ebo, who earned $9,996 in stallion awards for Weigelia's owner through the end of March.

The 4-year-old filly went three-for-three in that time frame, taking a pair of allowance races at Parx Racing in January and February, then leading at every point of call and drawing off by 6 3/4 lengths to win the Penn's Landing Stakes at the same track on March 7.

Date Night Kisses was Weigelia's second-leading earner of stallion awards, bringing in $7,728.

Also a 4-year-old filly, Date Night Kisses went unbeaten in two starts through the end of March, leading all the way around to win a Parx starter allowance on Jan. 18 by 7 3/4 lengths, then going to the front once again in a Feb. 13 Parx optional claiming race, where she hung on to win by three-quarters of a length.

Rounding out the quintet of top earners on behalf of Weigelia were Captain Chazz ($4,872); Ninetypercentbrynn ($4,872); and Beren ($4,788).

Weigelia, a 22-year-old son of Safely's Mark, stands at WynOaks Farm in Delta, Pa., for a private fee.

He won 13 of 48 starts during his on-track career and earned $1,007,708, highlighted by victories in the Grade 3 Carry Back Stakes and Kenny Noe Jr. Handicap, with four additional graded stakes placings.

It doesn't take long for a good Pennsylvania-bred to make serious money for their connections within the state's program, and Disco Ebo displayed this notion to perfection through the first two months of 2023.

The 4-year-old Weigelia filly earned a combined $78,540 in breeder's awards, stallion owner's awards, and owner's bonuses through Feb. 28, to pace all horses within the program.

That money was earned by a pair of allowance sprint victories through the first two months of the year, both at Parx Racing.

After the cutoff date for these rankings, Disco Ebo added a victory in the Penn's Landing Stakes on March 7 at Parx, once again getting loose on the lead and drawing off to win the 6 1/2-furlong race by 6 3/4 lengths as the overwhelming favorite. The Penn's Landing was Disco Ebo's third career stakes victory, and her first since taking the Youngstown Oaks at Mahoning Valley Race Course on Nov. 21 of last year.

Robert Reid Jr. trains Disco Ebo for the partnership of Cash Is King and LC Racing. Because the filly was both bred and sired in Pennsylvania, she was eligible for a 40 percent owner bonus on her purse earnings for races at Parx. For those two victories, her owners earned an additional $28,560 because of her status in the Pennsylvania-bred program.

Disco Ebo was bred in Pennsylvania by Stephen and Susan Quick's St. Omer's Farm, which earned $39,984 in breeder's awards for the filly's two victories. Horses bred and sired in the Keystone State are eligible for a 40 percent purse bonus on non-maiden races.

For a pair of victories, Disco Ebo earned WynOaks Farm, the home of sire Weigelia, $9,996 in stallion's awards. Registered Pennsylvania-breds by a state-resident sire earn a 10 percent bonus on purse for first-through-third efforts at tracks within the state.

Disco Ebo was the centerpiece of a big two months for veteran sire Weigelia, whose offspring occupied each of the top five spots among total Pennsylvania incentive earners.

That start to the season put Weigelia comfortably in the lead among stallion's award incentive earners through the first two months of the year, with his total of $43,770 safely outpacing second-place Uptowncharlybrown at $29,368. After playing second fiddle to cornerstone Pennsylvania sire Jump Start for several years in the stallion award earnings race, Weigelia finally overcame his late rival for the first time in 2022, bringing in $186,200 compared with Jump Start's $178,938.

Pennsylvania features one of North America's most lucrative breeder's awards for Thoroughbred racing, and no farm took advantage of that in 2023 quite like Blackstone Farm.

The Pine Grove, Penn.,-based operation of Christian Black and Douglas Black (no relation) finished 2022 as the state's leading earner of breeder's awards, bringing in $423,292, well ahead of second-place William J. Solomon with $312,162.

Blackstone Farm's fortunes were led in 2022 by Divine Miracle, a Distorted Humor gelding who generated $42,682 in breeder's awards. Last year's campaign was the strongest by Divine Miracle to date, racking up six wins in 11 starts, all at Parx Racing, with just one out-of-the-money effort.

His season started with a three-race winning streak, starting with a pair of seven-furlong sprints and concluding in a 1 1/16-mile starter handicap, where he set the early pace and held on by a neck. Divine Miracle finished second in the following start, then he won three of his next four races, with the most lucrative being a $75,400 one-mile allowance optional claiming race on Aug. 3, where he stalked the leader, took command in the stretch, and drew off by 6 3/4 lengths.

Divine Miracle is trained by Jamie Ness, who co-owns the gelding with Morris Kernan Jr., and Yo Berbs Racing.

He is out of the unplaced Giant's Causeway mare La Boheme, who was purchased by Blackstone Farm for $65,000, pregnant for the first time to Exchange Rate, at the 2013 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

La Boheme was sold again for $75,000 at the 2019 Keeneland January Horses of All Age Sale, notable for the fact that she was offered as one of just five mares that was ever impregnated by the subfertile Battle of Midway before his ill-fated return to the racetrack. The ensuing foal, a filly named Velvet Revolution, is unraced.

Finishing closely behind Divine Miracle among Blackstone Farm's award earners was Love in the Air, a daughter of Constitution who earned $42,360 for her breeders in 2022.

Like Divine Miracle, Love in the Air enjoyed a career season in 2022, winning three of seven starts for owner Main Line Racing Stable and trainer John Servis.

After starting her season with a runner-up effort at Gulfstream Park and a win at Monmouth Park, Love in the Air raced in her home start for the first time in the Lyphard Stakes at Penn National on June 3, where she recovered from a troubled start to finish second by 1 1/2 lengths to Maldives Model, and 16 3/4 lengths ahead of third-place Wildcat Cartridge.

Love in the Air continued to climb the class ladder in her next start, where she finished third in the Grade 3 Dr. James Penny Memorial Stakes at Parx Racing. Her next two starts were convincing victories against state-bred competition at Parx, trouncing the Mrs. Penny Stakes on Aug. 22 by six lengths, then leading at every point of call to take the Plum Pretty Stakes on Sept. 24 by two lengths.
