Dual Classic winner and champion 3-year-old colt I'll Have Another (Flower Alley) has been donated to Old Friends by owner Paul Reddam. The 14-year-old former stallion arrived to the Thoroughbred retirement farm Wednesday.

“Welcoming I'll Have Another is an auspicious and historic moment for Old Friends,” said John Nicholson, president and CEO of Old Friends. “We are deeply grateful to Paul Reddam and Doug O'Neill for choosing Old Friends to care for this great champion and to celebrate his magnificent legacy with thousands of our annual visitors. Being able to welcome our fourth Kentucky Derby winner to retire at Old Friends is further tribute to the vision and values of our founder and my friend, Michael Blowen.”

Reddam added, “It is fantastic that he will have a permanent home at Old Friends where everyone can visit him. There was a lot of concern when he went to Japan for stud duty and that is permanently put to rest with his return to Kentucky.”

I'll Have Another is the fourth GI Kentucky Derby and GI Preakness S. winner to be retired to the farm. The other three are Silver Charm, War Emblem, and Charismatic.

“I'll Have Another is an amazing horse–very blue collar, workmanlike,” O'Neill said. “He was so naturally competitive. He meant and still means so much to us around the barn. He took us on the ride of a lifetime winning the Santa Anita Derby, Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. We're so grateful for his brilliance and being able to work alongside him during his amazing career.”

Upon his retirement, I'll Have Another was sold for $10 million to the Hokkaido-based Big Red Farm in Japan and began his stud career there in 2013. He remained there through 2018, then returned to the United States and stood at Ballena Vista Farm in Ramona, Calif. from 2019 to 2020, before moving to Reddam's Ocean Breeze Ranch in Bonsall, Calif. from 2021 to 2024.

He was pensioned in 2024.

“We are so grateful to Mr. Reddam and to Doug for trusting us to give their Derby and Preakness winner a safe, healthy, and fun retirement,” said Michael Blowen, founder and past president of Old Friends. “We're planning to put I'll Have Another in the paddock adjacent to Lava Man's. How cool is that?”

Paul Reddam's Slow Down Andy (Nyquist) assumed command of Saturday's GI Awesome Again S. from the opening bell and made every pole a winning one, earning a fees-paid berth into the GI Breeders' Cup Classic over an extra eighth of a mile of the Santa Anita main track on Nov. 4.

“I was kind of surprised, I thought everyone would try to go,” Reddam said. “The track has been pretty speed favoring all day and he just broke so smoothly that he was on top in three jumps and that worked out. We are in for the Breeders' Cup Classic.”

Favored at 2-1 to snap a five-race skid dating back to a victory in the GII Del Mar Derby on the turf last September, the homebred–third to Defunded (Dialed In) in this event before filling the same spot in the GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile–bounced beautifully from gate three and set a lively pace over the rain-affected main track. The Bob Baffert duo of Defunded and GI Preakness S. hero National Treasure (Quality Road) tried to make a race of it as they swung into the stretch, but Slow Down Andy had something left and proved an easy winner by 2 1/2 lengths.

Defunded lasted for second ahead of Senor Buscador (Mineshaft), who attacked the wire for third.

Slow Down Andy, winner of the 2021 GII Los Alamitos Futurity and 2022 GIII Sunland Park Derby, made three previous starts this season, including a second-place finish in the GII San Diego H. July 29 and a third-place finish in the GI FanDuel Racing Pacific Classic S. last time Sept. 2.

Trainer Doug O'Neill was winning the race for the first time since the legendary Lava Man (Slew City Slew) took it when contested as the Goodwood H. in 2006. Baffert had trained the last three winners of the Awesome Again and eight overall.

“First of all, he is a super easy horse to train and I have to thank the people at OBR,” O'Neill said.

“Zillah does a lot of work along with Ocean Breeze, Carlos and Casey they do such a wonderful job. If they are all like him, it is about as easy as a job as you can get. He just goes out there and gives 100 percent every morning exercising. Tony Romero gets on him, he used to get on the great Lava Man and he says this horse is very special. Just to get a Grade I for Paul, Zillah, and for Andy and OBR it is really special.”

Pedigree Notes:

Slow Down Andy becomes the fourth winner at the top level for Nyquist, who was also campaigned by these same connections to memorable wins in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile and GI Kentucky Derby. Slow Down Andy is the lone graded winner produced by broodmare sire Square Eddie.

Reddam homebred Edwina E, winless in two career attempts, has also produced the late MSW Team Merchants (Nyquist) and a Nyquist filly of this year. She was bred to Nyquist for 2024.

The daughter of Nyquist (hip 1024) turned in the day's fastest quarter-mile breeze–and second fastest of the week–when covering the distance in :20 2/5. The dark bay filly, consigned by Wavertree Stables, is out of Stiffed (Stephen Got Even), whose daughter Affirmative Lady heads into Oaks off a win in the GII Gulfstream Park Oaks.

She was purchased by the Red Wings Enterprises pinhooking partnership of Ciaran Dunne and Paul Reddam–who won the GI Kentucky Derby with her sire in 2016, for $170,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

“She is just an unassuming, quiet filly to be around,” Dunne said. “She trains every day, easy and quiet, and then when you ask her to go, she just explodes. She has done really well. She was somewhat of a nondescript yearling, but she has matured into a big, powerful filly.”

Of the filly's Classic-bound half-sister, Dunne quipped, “Typical of me, I was the last to know [about the update].”

He added, “You kind of forget about pedigrees once they are bought and in the barn. Usually it doesn't come back up until after the breeze show. So, this was kind of a pleasant surprise right at the time that this filly was doing so good to have something like that happen.”

Wavertree Stables was also responsible for a colt by Into Mischief (hip 967) who equaled the fastest furlong time of the week with his :9 3/5 breeze Friday.

“The Into Mischief colt has been a wonderful horse all year,” Dunne said. “He's the kind that makes you want to get up in the morning and go to the barn. Everything he does is effortless. He just acts like he is very special. And to this point, he hasn't done anything to prove us wrong.”

Purchased by Red Wing Enterprises for $300,000 at Keeneland last September, the bay colt is out of multiple stakes winner and graded-placed Singing Kitty (Ministers Wild Cat).

The two bullet workers led a big day for the consignment, which was also represented by a Coal Front filly (hip 924, video) and a colt by Omaha Beach (hip 961, video) who worked the week's second-fastest furlong time of :9 4/5. Wavertree also had a pair of fillies by Omaha Beach work in :9 4/5 earlier in the week.

“We've had a great day,” Dunne said. “We are very fortunate to have a tremendous group of clients who support us and give us horses like these. And we have a crew at the farm who work all winter to make days like this happen. Days like this don't just happen. You work towards them. The horses that worked today, we had high expectations coming into today. It was a little nerve-wracking, but I think for the most they showed up and performed like we expected them to.”

DeBerdt Hopes More Success With Spooky Woods

The Speightstown filly (hip 1012) became the third juvenile of the week to work a furlong in :9 3/5 early in Friday's first set. She is consigned by Scanlon Training & Sales as agent for Bruno DeBerdt's Excel Bloodstock.

“I knew she was going to work well,” DeBerdt, who watched the work from his California home, said. “How well, I didn't know. She's been training really well for us and if there were any of the horses that were going to have a black-type work, I thought she could do it. But until you lead them up there and they show up, you just don't really know.”

Of the end result, DeBerdt continued, “Obviously we were very pleased with the way she did it and the fact that she did it well within herself and galloped out very strongly. She showed her true ability. And she's got a great mind. A good horse requires two things. One, obviously the ability, but equally important they have to have the mind. If they don't have the mind, it doesn't matter how much ability they have, it's not going to work.”

DeBerdt and Scanlon Training purchased the chestnut for $135,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

“I like the sire and I liked the filly as an individual,” DeBerdt said of the youngster's appeal last fall. “She was a little bit rough around the edges, but nothing that I thought would preclude her from developing into a nice horse. So I guess you might say we looked for the diamond in the rough and, with good diet and training, nature took care of the rest.”

DeBerdt also had a positive association with the filly's dam, Spooky Woods (Ghostzapper), whom he pinhooked for $250,000 at the 2016 Barretts March sale. She finished third for West Point Thoroughbreds in the 2017 GIII Santa Ysabel S. and sold again, with hip 1012 in utero, for $400,000 to Yeguada Centurion at the 2020 Keeneland November sale.

Spooky Woods is a half-sister to multiple graded-placed Kinsley Kisses (Congrats), as well as to the dam of graded-stakes winning sophomore Arabian Knight (Uncle Mo).

The under-tack show concludes with a final session beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday. The Spring sale will be held next Tuesday through Friday and bidding commences each day at 10:30 a.m.

When signing for a $340,000 Uncle Mo filly at this year’s OBS March Sale, Dennis O’Neill, noted bloodstock advisor and brother of trainer Doug O’Neill, told the TDN’s Steve Sherack that he “kept telling [owner] Paul [Reddam] that she was my female Nyquist.” The April foal, now named Get On the Bus, looks a live chance on debut as she breaks from the rail in Friday’s GII Sorrento S. at Del Mar.

The April foal, produced by a winning half-sister to G1 Dubai World Cup hero African Story (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), was a $150,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling and was hammered down to O’Neill after working an eighth of a mile in :10 1/5 over the SafeTrack surface at OBS.

“She’s real racey and athletic looking,” O’Neill continued. I just loved her breeze and she galloped out really good. She’s a very classy filly. We’re very excited to get her in the barn.”

Erich Brehm homebred My Girl Red (Texas Red) became the first winner for her freshman sire (by Afleet Alex) with a pacesetting, 4 1/4-length victory going 4 1/2 furlongs at Santa Anita June 14. Flavien Prat elects to stick with My Girl Red for her graded-stakes debut.

The hot-riding Abel Cedillo replaces the Frenchman atop morning-line favorite September Secret (Grazen). A debut ninth against Cal-bred maiden allowance company at Los Alamitos July 2, the gray filly was dangled for a $50,000 tag when facing state-breds at this venue July 24 and made light work of nine rivals, scampering clear to graduate by 7 3/4 lengths.

Trainer Jim Chapman sends out three of the Sorrento’s seven runners, the most promising of which looks to be Scaterra (Verrazano), a seven-length winner over the Arlington Poly July 25. Umberto Rispoli sees fit to take the call.

Reddam Racing’s Fore Left (Twirling Candy), winner of the G2 UAE 2000 Guineas at Meydan in February, has been added to the field for Saturday’s GI Belmont S. The colt had been expected to go postward in Saturday’s seven-furlong GI Woody Stephens S.

“Fore Left has settled in and is training really well over the Belmont surface,” said trainer Doug O’Neill, confirming the story first reported by Daily Racing Form‘s Dave Grenig. “He’s coming off a really strong performance in Dubai and we really like the one-turn 1 1/8-miles layout and the lack of a lot of speed projected in there.”

Fore Left, third in last year’s GII Best Pal S., has not started since the Feb. 6 UAE Guineas. He has worked twice at Belmont Park this month, going five furlongs in :59.05 (1/19) June 4 and six furlongs in 1:12.52 (2/2) June 13.

“If we’re ever going to take a shot with him, he’s telling us that now is the time,” O’Neill said. “I’m optimistic he’ll put in a solid effort under Jose Ortiz.”
