The Kentucky Derby Museum has launched a $1-million upgrade to its 'Riders Up!' exhibit. Construction began this month and the new exhibit is expected to debut Apr. 12.

The museum originally built the 'Riders Up!' exhibit in 2000 as a way to immerse visitors in the Derby and race day experience from the viewpoint of a jockey and Thoroughbred racehorse. The game was last updated in 2010 during a previous museum expansion project. With significant changes in virtual and augmented reality since then, the new version will look to captivate visitors with state-of-the-art technology designed to bring the thrill of horse racing into the 21st century.

“This exhibit has been a fan favorite for guests of all ages ever since the original debuted in 2000,” said Chris Goodlett, Kentucky Derby Museum Senior Director of Curatorial and Educational Affairs. “With 'Riders Up!,' we're not just entertaining; we're bringing the Derby's rich history to life. This exhibit drives home our mission of engaging everyone with the excitement of Derby every single day.”

Involved in the exhibit upgrade are Catalyst, an Australian-based production studio dedicated to virtual and augmented reality, and The Laboratory Creative, a design company based in Southern Indiana.

“We're not just upgrading a game; we're revolutionizing the way you experience the magic of the Derby,” said Patrick Armstrong, Kentucky Derby Museum President and CEO. “Every day, we're committed to sharing the exhilaration and history of Derby with all our guests. Bigger and bolder with cutting-edge technology, the new 'Riders Up!' is the epitome of that commitment.”

The Kentucky Derby Museum is partnering with The Jockey Club in England to display a replica Derby Trophy at the Epsom Downs Racecourse for the 244th running of the Epsom Derby June 3. The Epsom Derby was the inspiration for the Kentucky Derby, which will celebrate its 150th running in May 2024.

A representative from Kentucky Derby Museum will attend the Epsom Derby to answer questions about the trophy and to engage guests in the unique ties between British and American racing. The trophy's journey to England will launch the museum's line-up of celebrations leading up to Kentucky Derby 150.

“The Kentucky Derby Museum is honored to be a guest at the Epsom Derby,” said Patrick Armstrong, Kentucky Derby Museum President and CEO. “We're excited to travel back to our Derby roots and share how the greatest two minutes in sports is an integral part in Louisville's story and Kentucky's success. We believe a trip to Derby 150 will be a bucket-list item for British horseracing fans, and we're excited for the museum to be part of Louisville's continued growth in international tourism.”

Kentucky Derby Museum is pleased to announce the Grand Prize winner of its Black Heritage in Racing Community Art Contest, sponsored by Watson's, Derby City Gaming and The Storage Project. Lance G. Newman of Louisville was notified of his win for his work, The Will of Aunt Eliza. Newman will receive a $2000 cash Grand Prize from contest sponsor Derby City Gaming.

When speaking about his work, Newman describes it: “The Will of Aunt Eliza is an ode to a pioneering black horsewoman [Eliza Carpenter]. Born into slavery, she quickly inflicted her will on her condition and rose above and beyond the social standard of that day. The Will of Aunt Eliza stands as a reminder that no amount of oppression can halt the will of freedom.”

Kentucky Derby Museum is proud to play a role in the continued dialogue about the significant impact African American trainers, horse owners, and jockeys have had and continue to have on the sport of horse racing and the Kentucky Derby.

“We are grateful for the support of our community partners in working to ensure the stories of Black horse men and women are told as an integral part of the Kentucky Derby's history,” said Patrick Armstrong, Kentucky Derby Museum President and CEO.

In addition to the Grand Prize, cash prizes were also awarded to first, second and third place. Honorable mention awards were also given out to four other participating artists. Artist Simone Brown was awarded honorable mention and given an additional prize from Watson's which included a $2,500 gift card good for use in-store at their locations. Click here for a full list of winners. This link will take you to images of the top five winning art pieces.

Artwork submitted to the contest will be displayed at the Kentucky Derby Museum and Watson's starting later this Spring. Additional art will be displayed by our community partners: the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, KMAC Museum, Louisville Free Public Library, and the Muhammad Ali Center.

During the months of February and March, Kentucky Derby Museum will be offering visitors FREE admission to the Black Heritage in Racing Tour on select Saturdays at 1 P.M as part of Louisville Tourism's Unfiltered Truth Program. The Museum invites the community to take part in the tour to further their knowledge of some of the most important African American influencers in Thoroughbred racing.

NFL legend Terry Bradshaw's Bourbon Dinner at the Kentucky Derby Museum raised $32,246 to benefit the museum Thursday night.

“Terry Bradshaw gained another fan this week–the Kentucky Derby Museum,” said Patrick Armstrong, President & CEO of the Museum. “But not just for his superstar status. Terry showed up for us in a big way. He donated his time, shared his bourbon with our guests, and had everyone laughing and smiling the whole night. What you see on TV is what you get in person. It was a great night for Terry to promote Bradshaw Bourbon, but we're not quite sure he realizes the impact he has had on the museum, after such a tough year financially.”

Ticket sales, sponsorships and sales of Bradshaw Bourbon all helped contribute to a successful night. Additionally, two raffle winners each received a football and bottle of Bradshaw Kentucky Straight Rye, both autographed by Bradshaw. The Bradshaw Kentucky Straight Rye is not available on store shelves yet, and made its debut at the event.

Kentucky Derby Museum has been hosting its Legends Series for eight years. The bourbon series showcases a variety of bourbons and high-profile bourbon experts each year.

Tickets are selling quickly for Kentucky Derby Museum's Gala presented by Central Bank & Trust Co, with limited tickets remaining for purchase. The elegant evening filled with dinner and dancing, serves as the premier fundraising event for the Kentucky Derby Museum. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the gala was canceled during the Derby 146 season.

It marks the 34th year for the event, which will be held on Friday, April 23, 2021, starting at 6:00 pm.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="433" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

“Kentucky Derby 147 is on, and so is our Gala. This decision was made carefully and with much discussion between Museum staff and our Board of Directors. It has been a tough year financially for the Museum, like many other non-profit organizations,” said Patrick Armstrong, President & CEO of Kentucky Derby Museum. “But tourism is slowly bouncing back. We are seeing a nice flow of guests through the Museum daily, and feel that people are ready to safely celebrate the Kentucky Derby. As a GBAC STAR certified facility, we can provide both a safe and fun event to kick off Derby week.”

GBAC STAR certification is the gold standard for prepared facilities. This accreditation means the Museum staff is trained in proper cleaning, disinfection and infectious disease prevention protocols.

The Kentucky Derby Museum Gala is the nonprofit's largest annual fundraising effort. The money raised through ticket sales supports the Museum's curatorial and educational programs, and other services of the Museum. The Museum's education team teaches over 30,000 students each year in the classroom, on field trips, and through virtual experiences, the demand of which has increased tremendously during the pandemic. Funds raised also go towards the curatorial department, tasked with the important job of preserving and sharing artifacts and history of the Kentucky Derby with the public.

The night will kick-off with cocktails, followed by a seated dinner and dessert on the Museum's Oaks Terrace, an outdoor, open-air, covered space, followed by dancing with live music. Kentucky Derby Museum's COVID-19 protocols meet or exceed the social distancing, capacity, and health and safety guidelines outlined by local, state and CDC authorities, and these protocols will be implemented during the Gala. Guests will be required to wear masks, except while eating or drinking. The Museum will have hand sanitizing stations throughout the event for the safety and convenience of guests.

Tickets, tables and sponsorship packages are now available at DerbyMuseum.org or by contacting Sheridan Gates at sgates@derbymuseum.org.
