Under his Quarter Pole Enterprises banner, noted yearling-to-juvenile reseller Eddie Woods signed for the two top horses during Wednesday's second and final session of the OBS October Sale in Central Florida. The veteran horseman paid $250,000 for a colt by promising young sire Mitole about a third of the way through the session and hung around to the bitter end, when he gave $150,000 for a colt from the first crop of Global Campaign (Curlin). The topper was the most-expensive at the October Sale since 2018, when a colt by Cairo Prince was knocked down for $340,000.

Over the course of two days of trade, OBS reported sales on 386 yearlings for gross receipts of $7,692,100, good for an average price of $19,928. The number declined by 25.7% from last year's sale–which featured a 'select' session followed by an open session–when 394 horses sold for $10,560,900 or an average of $26,804. The median also took a hit, dropping 26.5% to $12,500. In 2022, some 15 horses sold in excess of $100,000, while seven crossed the six-figure threshold this year.

“The horses near the top of the market sold good, but at the lower levels of the market, there certainly was some weakness,” said OBS President Tom Ventura. “I think it's the nature of the market reacting. We have been spoiled somewhat post-pandemic where the market has been moving, even in the face of increased interest rates and the financial markets and the general financial situation. We just keep doing what we can, recruiting horses, recruiting people trying to put the best product we can in front of our clientele.”

Woods struck first for hip 507, a Sue Vacek-consigned Florida-bred son of Mitole and Midnight Magic (Midnight Lute) and was the recipient of a positive update when his half-sister, last year's GIII Delaware Oaks heroine and two-time OBS graduate Midnight Stroll (Not This Time), padded her resume with a close runner-up effort in the GII Presque Isle Downs Masters S. Sept. 18.

With time ticking away on the sale, Woods snapped up hip 745, another Florida-bred, who fetched $82,000 when offered as a short yearling at the OBS January Sale. The late February foal was consigned to the October Sale by Richard Kaizen's Kaizen Sales, agent.

“The two horses I bought, I loved. I didn't think I could get them bought, but I did,” Woods said. “I might have stretched on the [Mitole] a little bit, but gosh, he's gorgeous, by a sire that's on the come with a fashionable pedigree, he just did everything right and that mare throws a good-looking horse.

“The Global Campaign was a magnificent-looking horse, it's just a family of runners. He looked a bit like [the stakes-winning] A. J. Melini (Matty G) [who appears in the second dam], that's a horse I had for Marion Montanari once upon a time, just a bit of a stronger version of him. Two really good, strong, physical colts.”

Ice Cold, a 2-year-old daughter of Mitole and a graduate of the Woods program, won the Oct. 4 Miss Indiana S., and the consignor thinks Mitole is a stallion with a bright future.

“They're showing up and as they get older, they're starting to get a little bit better, which is a good sign,” he said. “I thought they may be a little quick and early, but they're getting a route of ground and that usually augurs for a decent kind of stallion.”

Both of Woods's purchases are naturally ticketed for next year's breeze-up sales, and Woods is equal parts pragmatic and optimistic.

“We've got a long ways to go,” he said. “If everything goes right, they're perfect for resale candidates. They need to be quick, they need to vet well and have good videos. But they both move really well, they're both quite handsome and there's no reason to think they wouldn't do well going forward.

A total of 713 yearlings have been cataloged for the OBS October Sale, which kicks off a two-day run Tuesday morning in Central Florida.
Based on the foot traffic on the grounds over the last few days, OBS Director of Sales Tod Wojciechowski is confident there will be plenty of demand for what is on offer.

“We were very busy Sunday and by Monday afternoon we were busy again, so I feel pretty good about what we've seen traffic-wise,” he said.

October graduates don't get much important than Crimson Advocate (Nyquist), who was purchased by Dew Sweeper II from the consignment of Beth Bayer, agent, for $100,000 last fall and has won two of her three starts to date. A debut third to future GISW Brightwork (Outwork) at Keeneland this past April, the chestnut earned a trip to the Royal Ascot meeting when taking out the Royal Palm Juvenile Fillies in May and made the most of the opportunity by posting a 9-1 upset in the G2 Queen Mary S.

As recently as this past weekend, the October Sale was represented by Time Passage (Tunwoo), an $85,000 purchase by trainer Eddie Plesa for his clients Karl and Cathi Glassman, who prevailed in the Miss Gracie S. at Gulfstream Park this past Saturday.

Nothing inspires confidence in a sale than success at the races, said Wojciechowski.

“Absolutely. When you have those sorts of results, it certainly entices a buyer to come in and maybe they can find one like that,” he said.

The October catalog features a diverse cross-section of stallions from Florida, Kentucky and New York, and should have something for everyone, Wojciechowski said.

“More and more we see a better mix of and we also have some of the sire power that has been in favor as of late,” he said. “We have some Mitoles, Complexitys sold well at the previous sales, so the quality of sire continues to grow for us here.

The October Sale comes on the heels of regional events over the past few weeks which posted mixed results year-over-year. At the Fasig-Tipton California sale, which also included a Horses of Racing Age Section, the average was fractionally higher, but the median took a significant dip while one of every three horses was bought back. The average was down slightly during last week's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale, and there remained an uneasiness in the middle market while buybacks also trended a bit higher.

“From the sales standpoint, I think we're going to see what we've seen at the yearling sales this year,” Wojciechowski offered. “The perceived upper end will sell very well and it might get a little thin in some of the middle spots. But there's no reason we should expect something totally different.”

With sessions beginning at 10 a.m. ET, hips 1-338 and supplemental entries hips 339-359 are set to go under the hammer Tuesday, followed by hips 401-739 and supplements 740-755 on Wednesday. Some 37 yearlings were added to the sale after the catalogs were printed.

The Green family's D. J. Stable acquired last year's joint $210,000 toppers, a colt by Mitole and a Filly by The Factor, each bred in Florida.

JASPER ROBUSTO (c, 2, Khozan–Prize Informant, by Marciano) was purchased by Blaz Perez Stable for $27,000 at OBSOCT last fall, but blossomed over the next several months and was sold to Mori on behalf of the 'Jasper' owner Kazuo Kato for $265,000 at OBSMAR, the best of 25 juveniles (33 ring) by the sire during this season's breeze-ups (:9 4/5). The bay is out of a stakes-winning half-sister to Wise Answer (Wised Up), who nearly swept the Florida Stallion S. series in 2007, capped by a 10-length romp in the In Reality S. at Calder. Rivermont Farm bough Prize Informant for $9,500 in foal to Valiant Minister at the 2019 OBS Winter Mixed Sale. B-Rivermont Farm (FL)

PIKARI (f, 2, Twirling Candy–Laudation, by Congrats) is the second foal to the races for her dam, a stakes winner at two for Jerry Durant and Steve Asmussen and later acquired by Peter O'Callaghan's Woods Edge Farm for $150,000 with this foal in utero at Keeneland November in 2020. Produced by a half-sister to this year's G3 UAE Oaks heroine Mimi Kakushi (City of Light) and MSW Moment Is Right (Medaglia d'Oro), this March foal fetched $265,000 from Ciaran Dunne's Red Wings Enterprises at last year's Keeneland September Sale and lit up the tote at OBSMAR to the tune of $900,000 after working a furlong in :9 4/5. B-Woods Edge Farm LLC (KY)

KINGS CROWN (JPN) (c, 2, Yoshida {Jpn}–Tulips Galore, by Giant's Causeway) is the first Japanese starter for his WinStar-based stallion and was acquired in utero for $45,000 at the 2020 Keeneland November Sale. The unplaced dam is a half-sister to New York-bred stakes winner Gambling Girl (Dialed In), runner-up in this year's GI Kentucky Oaks, third in the GI CCA Oaks and entered for Saturday's GI Alabama S. at Saratoga. The colt's third dam Eventail (Lear Fan), a half-sister to Take Charge Lady (Dehere), is responsible for Heart's Cry's dual Japanese listed winner Strong Souther (Jpn) as well as GSW Straight Story (Giant's Causeway). B-Yuki Dendo

A Mitole colt and a The Factor filly shared top billing during the select session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's October Yearling Sale, with both fetching $210,000 from the Green family's D. J. Stable.

In total, 123 head changed hands for gross receipts of $6,018,000. The average was $48,927 (up 12.1% from $43,644 for the corresponding session in 2021) and median was $40,000 (up 25% from $32,000 last year). The RNA rate was 34.2% as of this writing, but that figure does not include post-sale transactions.

D. J. Stable led all buyers, while Kaizen Sales was the leading consignor with 18 head sold for $799,000.

The auction concludes Wednesday with an open session beginning at 10:00 a.m. Visit www.obssales.com for more information.

GREEN TEAM ACTIVE IN OCALA

Len and Lois Green's D. J. Stable celebrated a big win this past Friday when their Mark Casse trainee Wonder Wheel (Into Mischief) solidified herself as one of the favorites for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies with a gutsy score in Keeneland's GI Darley Alcibiades, and the team was back at it on Tuesday adding to their roster of 2-year-olds for next year. In total, D. J. purchased five head for a combined $590,000, including both of the $210,000 toppers.

“Our expectations are always to try and find value,” said D. J. general manger Jon Green when asked if last week's win had anything to do with Tuesday's activity. “We have people looking at every sale for us with the idea that if horses fall within the price ranges that we anticipate that we'll go ahead and strike. It's really a matter of value, and we felt like the horses we picked up at this sale, although they weren't inexpensive by any stretch, they represented value for the athleticism and the pedigrees they possessed.”

The Greens also purchased the $600,000 Curlin colt topper earlier this yearling season at Fasig-Tipton July.

The first of their high-priced buys Tuesday was a Mitole colt consigned by Bobby Jones Equine LLC, Agent II as hip 122. The Florida-bred is the first foal out of an unraced Uncle Mo half-sister to grade/group winners Giant Gizmo (Giant's Causeway), Eons (Giant's Causeway) and Tableaux (Giant's Causeway) and to the dam of MGSW Cheermeister (Bodemeister).

“The reason why we went as high as we did on the Mitole colt is that he doesn't look like a typical sprinter that you would expect from a champion sprinter like Mitole,” said Green. “He's bred 3×3 to Indian Charlie and he looks like he's going to be a big 16.3 kind of colt once he's all done growing. So, for us, it was the appeal of getting a horse who could potentially have the turn of foot and speed that Mitole had during his career, but still have the scope to go two turns like this colt should be able to do and like his female family suggests he should.”

Green also noted that D. J. had bought another Mitole colt at Keeneland September after he RNA'd for $190,000, “but we probably got outbid on four or five others.”

Also among D. J.'s acquisitions was a filly by The Factor (hip 150) who received a well-timed pedigree update when her 2-year-old half-sister Delight (Mendelssohn) romped in the GII Jessamine S. one race before the Alcibiades. Delight sold for $90,000 at this auction 12 months ago and then for $400,000 at OBS March off a sparkling breeze (10.1) and gallop out. Like Delight last term, hip 150 was consigned by Stuart Morris.

“It was a combination of things,” Green said when asked how much of the filly's $210,000 price tag was the pedigree and how much was the physical. “Mark Casse, who will train her, had her down in his opinion as the top filly in the sale. We were actually present when Delight won the Jessamine at Keeneland and I was just very impressed with her in the paddock–with her demeanor–and we were one of the many underbidders on her at OBS March. [Trainer] Jonathan Thomas has done a great job campaigning her and I fully anticipate that Delight is going to hit the board in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, and if that's the case it'll be a tremendous update for this filly as well.”

The D. J. team has a connection to a third Breeders' Cup-bound juvenile filly in GI TVG Del Mar Debutante S. and GII Chandelier S. heroine And Tell Me Nolies (Arrogate), who they bought for $70,000 as a KEEJAN short yearling upon the recommendation of bloodstock agent Kim Valerio and then sold for $230,000 at OBS April.

“The team starts with Kim Valerio,” Green said. “She's been outstanding as far as finding athletes for us. Kim has so many years of experience in the industry across the board in various aspects, and she's used to working with end users like us and knows what things we can live with vs. pinhookers for example. Kim does an outstanding job of finding these athletes and giving us a short list, and then it's up to our trainers to take the short list and narrow it down even more, but I would have to say for the majority of the horses on Kim's short list, our trainers concur and feel confident in vetting and subsequently bidding on and buying.”

D. J. will be seeking a second Breeders' Cup Juvenile fillies title (Jaywalk, 2018) next month, and Green said all systems are go: “Wonder Wheel, knock on wood, came out of the race outstanding. We fully anticipate for her to compete and run a good race in the Breeders' Cup. I've said previously in other interviews, and as silly as it sounds, the Spinaway (in which Wonder Wheel was second as the favorite Sept. 4) is a Grade I at Saratoga, so you'd think that would be very high up on everyone's list for trying to win it. But our goal was to set her up for the Alcibiades and then the Breeders' Cup, so on the one hand we were a little disappointed we ran second, but we weren't squeezing the lemon for that race. We were really trying to make sure she had two more big races in her arsenal and I think she's setting up to run a great race.”

Sent off the 1-2 chalk on the strength of a 2 1/4-length debut victory going five furlongs July 24, Mike Pegram, Karl Watson & Paul Weitman's Havnameltdown (Uncaptured) was made to work for it, but in the end proved too classy for his rivals in Sunday's GIII Best Pal S., coming away late to take it by open lengths.

Drawn widest of all, the $16,000 OBS October Yearling turned $200,000 OBS April breezer (:9 4/5) pinged the stalls and showed good early speed to get down into the three path, where he cut the opening quarter-mile in a sharp :21.74 despite having to do some work. Maintaining a narrow advantage into the turn, the Florida-bred raced in the two path and faced a fresh challenge from $400,000 OBS March graduate Agency (Bolt d'Oro), who rolled up three wide, looking every bit poised to capitalize on the favorite's early exertions. The latter got to within about a half-length with three-sixteenths of a mile to travel, but Havnameltdown had something in the locker and kicked home about 2 1/2 lengths to the good. Longshot Man Child (Creative Cause) rounded out the trifecta. Havnameltdown was providing trainer Bob Baffert with a record-extending ninth Best Pal, but first since Klimt (Quality Road) in 2016. The same ownership group won the 2009 Best Pal with future champion 2- and 3-year-old male Lookin At Lucky (Smart Strike).

“I was outside and my plan was to stay second or third, but he was real aggressive out of the gate,” said winning rider Juan Hernandez. “He wanted to go to the front so I just let him run and do his thing. At the quarter pole he was getting kind of lazy so I woke him up a bit and he picked it up really well and got to the wire.”

Pedigree Notes:

Havnameltdown is the 11th stakes winner and sixth graded winner for Uncaptured, who was sold by Ocala Stud to South Korea to continue his stud career in late 2019 and covered a total of 137 mares in his first two seasons there, including 92 in 2020. The 12-year-old is a son of Lion Heart, whose record as a sire of sires–particularly in Florida–is well documented, as his son Kantharos achieved great success before being moved to Hill 'n' Dale. The latter's son Bucchero is off to a promising start at Pleasant Acres Stallions. Produced by a half-sister to three full black-type winners and to the dam of 2020 GIII Selene S. winner Two Sixty (Uncaptured), Havnameltdown has a yearling half-sister by Tapiture. Ashley's Babe was barren to both World of Trouble and Maximus Mischief for 2022 and was most recently bred to the latter.

ARMAN (Bolt d'Oro) has drawn widest in what appears a very salty field of 12 as he looks to become a seventh first-crop winner for his Spendthrift-based stallion. Bought back on a bid of $52K at the 2021 OBS October sale, the Jan. 25 foal one of just four horses to breeze a furlong in :9 4/5 at this year's OBS March sale and was hammered down to Kaleem Shah for $600K, one of seven of the 49 Bolt d'Oro juveniles reported as sold to fetch $500K or more this year. The Florida-bred is out Beautissimo (Uncle Mo), an unraced half-sister to the stakes-winning and multiple graded-placed dirt router Two Thirty Five (Stay Thirsty). Other first-timers with significant pedigree appeal include Tulsan (Into Mischief), a full-brother to debut romper and fellow Spendthrift sire Maximus Mischief; the Valentine's Day-foaled How Did He Do That (Good Magic), whose stakes-placed dam Stormin Maggy (Storm Cat) is a half-sister to dual Classic winner Afleet Alex (Northern Afleet) and his SW/MGSP full-brother Unforgettable Max; and Sivako (More Than Ready), a half-brother to dual Grade II-winning dirt marathoner Lone Rock (Majestic Warrior) and to last year's Tempted S. winner and GI Frizette S. runner-up Gerrymander (Into Mischief). TJCIS PPs

An Indiana-bred filly from the first crop of the Florida-based MGSW Bucchero (Kantharos) was hammered down for $48,000 to Roger Speiss, Randy Klopp and Liz McCready Klopp to top the Indiana Thoroughbred Owner's and Breeder's Association's 2021 Fall Mixed Sale held Oct. 16 at Indiana Grand in Shelbyville, IN. The price is believed to be a record for a yearling at the sale.

Cataloged as hip 40, the April foal–already named Honey Red–is the fourth from Spousal Privilege (Successful Appeal), who has already produced the Indiana-bred stakes-winning duo of Black Nova (Holiday Promise) and Maters N Taters (Santiva). She is also responsible for seven-time winner Rooster (City Weekend), victorious in the ITOBA Stallion Season S., a non black-type race. Hip 40, bred by Crystal Chapple DVM and Michael Phelps, was consigned to the ITOBA sale by the duo's Stone Cut Farm and carries the same Kantharos/Valid Appeal cross as dual-surface Grade I winner World of Trouble.

Including Saturday's results, Bucchero, who stands at Pleasant Acres Stallions in Morriston, has had 12 yearlings sell from 15 through the ring this year for an average of $32,417, better than six times his introductory stud fee of $5,000. A first-crop filly out of the stakes-winning Sliver of Hope (Value Plus), also bred in Indiana, was sold to Albert Davis for $75,000 during the select session of the OBS October Yearling Sale in Ocala Oct. 12.

Robert LaPenta's Nicky the Vest impressed trainer Jonathan Thomas in his career debut win in the finale on Friday's program, where he led gate-to-wire in securing a 3 ¼-length triumph under Kendrick Carmouche in a time of 1:40.67.

Bred in New York by Highclere, the juvenile son of freshman sire Runhappy garnered an 82 Beyer first out against his Empire State-bred counterparts at odds of 5-1 going a one-turn mile.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Thomas has not thought past Nicky the Vest's debut victory but will sort out his options and expressed excitement in what the future holds.

“The scenario played out well and the horse did everything you could ask a firster to do,” Thomas said. “We're still going to see how he comes out of his race. I'm sure we'll keep options open and see how things shake out. He ran a good number, a good number no matter the company. We're really happy with what we saw the other day. He had been training nicely in the morning, so it was good to see that replicated in the afternoon.”

Nicky the Vest is out of the Cat Thief mare Tazarine, whose six offspring of racing age are all winners. He was purchased for $110,000 from the 2019 OBS October Yearling Sale from consigner Stuart Morris.

A colt from the first crop of California-based stallion Danzing Candy topped the open yearling session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s October sale on a $115,000 bid from agent Donato Lanni. Overall numbers held up reasonably well compared to last year, especially considering the current economic pressures brought about by COVID-19.

After 2-year-olds, horses of racing age and selected yearlings sold Tuesday, Wednesday’s open session saw 256 yearlings bring a combined $2,859,400 at an average of $11,170 (down 11.1% year over year) and median of $8,000 (unchanged). The RNA rate was 21.5% compared to 24.6% 12 months ago.

Bred in Kentucky by Dan and Valencia Leach and consigned by Lisa McGreevy’s Abbie Road Farm, Agent II, session-topping hip 632 is out of the winning mare Bosserette (Street Boss), who was herself a $155,000 OBSAPR grad in 2013. Bosserette is half to SW Meditations (Out of Place) and a full to MSP Butch Walker and from the family of graded winners Lindon Lime and Regal Thunder.

Danzing Candy was trained to 2017 wins in the GIII Lone Star Park H. and GII San Carlos S. by close Lanni associate Bob Baffert. The Rancho San Miguel resident’s previous priciest yearling was $42,000 (a half-brother to Swiss Skydiver {Daredevil} RNA’d for $145,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase).

Besecker Goes Back to the Well…
While Pennsylvania-based owner Joseph Besecker had dispersed much of his stock last year, he has remained involved in the sport on a smaller scale, and went to $62,000 Wednesday to reacquire an Exaggerator filly (hip 615) who he had co-bred and sold as a weanling. The dark bay was purchased by consignor Sandi Dorr’s Sennebec South Farm for $37,000 the 2019 Keeneland November sale.

Hip 615 is the second foal out of stakes-placed Bazinga B (Lion Hearted), who Besecker claimed for $13,000 in 2016.

“She was part of my dispersal,” Besecker confirmed of the Pennsylvania-bred, who was a foal share with the Exaggerator Syndicate. “[Dorr] did a phenomenal job with the horse. We have the Uncle Lino [2-year-old half-sister named Bazinga Babe] ready to race, who we’re very high on; and we have the Hoppertunity [foal colt] who looks like one of the nicest-looking babies I’ve seen in a long time… There were five live people on this horse–I didn’t bid until late. She went for more than I would have thought, but knowing what we know [I thought she was worth it].”

Besecker said Bazinga Babe is in training with Tim Kreiser at Penn National, and noted that he and Kreiser won with a firster on Wednesday at Parx who has been less impressive in the mornings than hip 615’s half-sister. An Exaggerator filly herself, Expurgated–a $40,000 OBSAPR acquisition–aired by 8 1/4 lengths in a $25,000 maiden claimer.

“I was at many, many, many more horses [before the dispersal],” Besecker said when asked of his decision to continue owning horses after seeming like he was getting out of the business. “All the reasons I said I got out were the reasons I got out, and I’m still frustrated with some things–especially during COVID. But, now, I’m applying a new business concept.”

Besecker noted that of the six 2-year-old in training purchases he made this spring, three have won, two have finished second and one has finished third.
