Delayed a day due to severe weather in central Florida, the under-tack show for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training got back underway Friday with a colt from the third crop of Spendthrift stallion Bolt d'Oro (hip 787) setting the high mark at :9 3/5. Consigned by Top Line Sales, which continued to be well-represented Friday after posting five of the top 18 fastest furlong works during Wednesday's session, the juvenile was purchased as a yearling by Cash Bloodstock at Keeneland September last year for $90,000. One of three to hit the :9 3/5 mark so far this week, he is out of a winning Speightstown dam who has produced five winners from six to race, led by stakes winner Blame J D (Blame) and stakes-placed $350,000 OBS March grad Golden Nugget (Mendelssohn).

New York Going Strong

A registered New York-bred filly (hip 752) by Central Banker posted one of only two :9 4/5 works Friday. Three Diamond Farm's Kirk Wycoff signed the ticket as Bronco Bloodstock when he went to $32,000 to purchase the filly last year at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga New York-Bred Yearling Sale. It was one of five yearling purchases made by Bronco Bloodstock over the two-day sale. Four of those five yearlings are being resold at OBS April, with two (hip 637 and hip 253) joining hip 752 by working in :9 4/5 earlier in the week. The last of the four (hip 869) is expected to breeze Saturday. All four hips sell with the Wavertree Stables consignment.

“It's two chances for the price of one,” said Ciaran Dunne of Wavertree Stables. “Kirk Wycoff is in a spot where, if something happened and he wasn't able to sell, then he's quite happy to race. That's the main appeal of the New York-breds. He likes to race at Saratoga, so he tried to pick some that he thought fit that bill.”

After several nice days of breeze-friendly weather, including a tail wind down the lane, conditions weren't quite as kind to workers Friday.

“She [hip 752] was fortunate enough that she got out there before the wind got up,” Dunne said. “I think the track was fair. We expected her to work well. I think the main difference today is that we've had the tail wind all week and then it turns around and it's in their face, so that was a double whammy.”

Hip 752 is the second foal out of the unraced Tanmawwy (Candy Ride {Arg}), a daughter of group-placed Wasseema (Danzig) and a half-sister to stakes-placed Ekhtibaar (Bernardini). This is also the family of French group winner Funny Kid (Lemon Drop Kid) and MGSW Candy Man Rocket (Candy Ride {Arg}).

The same line of storms that canceled Thursday's under-tack show dropped north of an inch of rain around the Ocala area, but Dunne was quick to compliment track conditions even after the deluge.

“The track is fine.” he said. “That's the great thing about this surface is that, even after weather like that, it's still usable and it's still safe. The wind was the bigger factor today and she was lucky to get out there early.”

Sellers, Dunne included, continue to look forward to OBS April off of a strong and steady March renewal.

“We're cautiously optimistic,” said Dunne. “March was solid without being outstanding and, I think as April gets stronger, it puts more pressure on March. People know there are 1200 hips more to come, so it's easier to sit back [in March] and say you'll wait a little. But April is obviously the big one now, so we've been optimistic.”

Also working in :9 4/5 Friday was hip 839, a colt by Army Mule out of Waltzing (Candy Ride {Arg}), who is a half-sister to graded winner Dancing Solo (Giant's Causeway) and Grade I-placed Dancing (Bernardini). The dark bay is consigned by Omar Ramirez Bloodstock on behalf of Eric Delvalle, who purchased him for $45,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale. Also on behalf of Delvalle, Ramirez sent out a filly by Omaha Beach (hip 308) to work the furlong in :9 3/5 during Monday's second session of the under-tack show.

A colt from the first crop of McKinzie (hip 862) was responsible for Friday's fastest quarter-mile work, working in :21. Out of a stakes-winning first dam, the juvenile, consigned by Pick View LLC, sold for $110,000 at Keeneland last September to Stock Thoroughbreds.

The under-tack show continues Saturday with hips 864-1035, with an additional day added Sunday for hips 1036-1208 to compensate for Thursday's unexpected cancellation. The OBS Spring sale will be held Tuesday through Friday, with bidding starting each day at 10:30 a.m.

A May foal, Noble Roger is out of a multiple stakes-placed full-sister to GSW Zindaya, whose 'TDN Rising Star' son Carl Spackler (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) posted a career-best in last year's GII National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame S. at Saratoga.

Maymun (Frosted), a $50,000 KEESEP yearling pinhooked into a $900,000 OBS April 2-year-old by Paul Neatherlin, and racing for trainer Bob Baffert and Zedan Racing Stables, absolutely rolled on the front end Saturday in his 6 1/2-furlong debut to become the latest 'TDN Rising Star'.

Maymun was an OBS April star, breezing in :9 3/5 and leaving no doubt in his now-trainer's mind of his ability.

“He was ridiculously fast,” Baffert said of the colt shortly after the sale. “He worked beautifully and came out of it well. That's half the battle.”

“This was one of the best horses in the sale, I thought,” added bloodstock agent Donato Lanni in Ocala. “He deserved to bring that kind of money.”

Entered Saturday off a best-of-65 drill Jan. 13, the betting public had plenty of confidence in Zedan Racing Stables colt, sending him off at 4-5 opposite his $1.05m stablemate Normandy Landing (Gun Runner). Driven to the lead right from the jump under Juan Hernandez, Maymun had things all his own way up front and proceeded to rocket through fractions of :21.72 and :43.91. Spinning for home, as the rest of the field was already strung out and under a drive, Hernandez tossed one look over his shoulder and unleashed his mount into the final furlong, opening up at will before gearing the son of Frosted down for the easiest of wins.

The third 'Rising Star' for Frosted, Maymun is out of a full-sister to MSP Auspicious, herself the dam of $1.1m OBSAPR RNA and SP Bobby Bo (Speightster), and a half-sister GSP Flatter Than Me (Flatter). Maymun's own half-sister, Rivercame (Awesome Again), while not a winner herself, produced $300,000 OBS March grad Sweet Mini (Good Magic). Handwoven has a 2-year-old Kantharos colt and is due to Violence this year.

Wynstock (Solomini), campaigned in partnership by Los Alamitos track owner Ed Allred and one-time Hollywood Park president and current Los Al vice president Jack Liebau, provided his New York-based stallion with his second stakes winner of the afternoon and first at the graded level when narrowly outlasting Stronghold (Ghostzapper) in Saturday's GII Los Alamitos Futurity.

It was the eighth victory in the 10 runnings of the Futurity since relocating to Orange County for trainer Bob Baffert and first since 2020. Ironically, Solomini crossed the wire best in the 2017 renewal, only to be demoted to third behind his 'TDN Rising Star' stable companion McKinzie. It was nearly deja vu all over again on Saturday.

Off at 13-1, the second-longest shot in the scratched-down field of five and easily least-preferred of the three Baffert entrants was ridden aggressively from the inside gate by Kyle Frey and set the pace in advance of Wine Me Up (Vino Rosso) as Ace of Clubs (Mor Spirit) poked through between them. Stronghold and odds-on 'TDN Rising Star' Coach Prime (Quality Road) raced at the back of a compact group as they turned down the backstretch.

Urged along as they raced into the final half-mile, Wynstock was put to a more vigorous drive as Wine Me Up and Coach Prime took runs at him from the outside. Three and four wide, respectively, into the lane, that duo failed to go on with it, and Stronghold emerged the biggest danger down inside. Wynstock and Stronghold exchanged two or three bumps in the final furlong and a half, and the former gutted out a narrow victory before withstanding a stewards' inquiry. Coach Prime re-rallied late to get within a length at the finish.

“He was on his toes and actually looked like he was going to run in the Champion of Champions,” Baffert said, referring to the famed Quarter Horse race. “He's a stout, beautiful horse. I'm just really happy for Doc. We go back way back. To have this moment is special. He bought him and trusted me. I'm so excited.”

Of Coach Prime, he added: “He was sort of in and out the whole way. He got a little warm behind the gate and got shuffled back a bit. He's still green.”

A $50,000 Keeneland September yearling turned $700,000 OBS April breezer, Wynstock burned plenty of money in his first two appearances, finishing a well-beaten fourth at 8-5 on Del Mar debut Aug. 25 and fifth as the 12-5 chalk over a rain-affected Santa Anita strip Sept. 30. The bettors deserted him for his latest and those that jumped ship paid for it, as Wnystock led all the way to graduate by 7 1/2 lengths going a mile in Arcadia Oct. 15.

Pedigree Notes:

McMahon and Hill Bloodstock paid $10,500 for Timberlea at the 2020 Keeneland January sale with the express intent of breeding her to Solomini, who was standing his first year at McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds.

A half-sister to Grade III winner Untrapped (Trappe Shot) and from the deeper female family of champion Minardi and the excellent Tale of the Cat, Timberlea foaled a Mo Town filly this past Apr. 5 and returned to Solomini for her 2024 produce. The sire was also represented Saturday by New York Stallion S. heroine My Shea D Lady and the debuting Heavyweight Champs, promoted to second in the colts' division one race later.

7th-Horseshoe Indianapolis, $34,000, Msw, 9-25, 2yo, 5fT, :58.40, fm, 2 1/4 lengths.
CODE OMAHA (c, 2, Omaha Beach–Lantiz {SP, $271,821}, by Tizway) was favored by $15 over fellow firster Silent Heart (Heart to Heart) in a five-furlong turf dash Monday at Horseshoe Indianapolis and the duo comprised what turned out to be a fairly rich return to exacta players. A $180,000 Fasig-Tipton July yearling turned $550,000 OBS April breezer, the bay broke sharply, but inward, causing a bit of a chain reaction to his inside. Easing to the lead for Manny Esquivel, the bay carved out an opening quarter in :22.63 with a host of pursuers and maintained a clear advantage into the stretch. Briefly challenged by Azteca's Gold (Sharp Azteca) approaching the eighth pole, Code Omaha kicked on nicely and covered his final furlong in a smart :11.39 to score comfortably at odds of 27-10. Silent Heart was forced to cover extra ground while rallying into the final quarter mile and boxed on gamely for second to complete a $31 exacta.

CODE OMAHA (Omaha Beach) debuts here for Lauren and Rene Woolcott and trainer Jonathan Thomas. The Feb. 15 foal is the first produce for his stakes-placed dam and was purchased by Bregman Family Stable for $185,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July Sale. The bay breezed a quarter-mile in a slick :20 3/5 at this year's OBS April Sale and was originally led out unsold, but was subsequently acquired by the Woolcotts for $550,000 in a private transaction. The Complexity yearling half-brother to Code Omaha was sold to Thomas & Mitchell Bloodstock for $50,000 during the sixth session of the just-concluded Keeneland September sale. TJCIS PPs
