The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) announced today that the breakthrough performance by Japanese horses Loves Only You (JPN) and Marche Lorraine (JPN) at the 38th Breeders' Cup World Championships at Del Mar last November has been voted the 2021 FanDuel Racing-NTRA Moment of the Year based on the results of 3,000 votes cast via Twitter and an online poll.

The FanDuel Racing-NTRA Moment of the Year will be recognized this evening at the 51st Annual Eclipse Awards presented by 1/ST Racing, FanDuel Racing Group and the NTRA at Santa Anita Park. The Eclipse Awards ceremony will air live on TVG and Racetrack Television Network (RTN) beginning at 8 p.m. ET.

In addition to TVG and RTN, the ceremony will be streamed live on NTRA.com, americasbestracing.net (ABR), Bloodhorse.com, DRF.com, Equibase.com, MyRaceHorse.com (YouTube), santaanita.com/live Thoroughbred Daily News (TDN.com), TOBA.org and XBTV.com.

In voting concluded Feb. 2, fans voted for #JapaneseDuo as the top Moment of 2021. On 13 previous occasions, Japanese-based horses had failed to win a race at the Breeders' Cup World Championships, but all that changed dramatically at last year's Breeders' Cup at Del Mar. On Nov. 6, DMM Dream Club's 5-year-old mare, Loves Only You, slipped between horses and won the Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, and gave Japan its first-ever Breeders' Cup triumph. Not to be outdone, but just two hours later, U. Carrot Farm's Marche Lorraine shocked the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff, winning by a nose at 49-1, and awarding Japan its second win at the World Championships.

Moment of the Year voters chose from 11 occurrences in 2021 illustrating a range of human emotions as well as outstanding displays of equine athleticism. Following #JapaneseDuo in second place was #DiversityStepForward when George Leonard became the first African American trainer to compete in the Breeders' Cup World Championships.

Past Moments of the Year

The first-ever “NTRA Moment of the Year” was the touching scene between Charismatic and jockey Chris Antley following the 1999 Belmont Stakes. The next year's winner was the stretch run of the 2000 Breeders' Cup Classic, which saw Tiznow hold on for a dramatic victory against Giant's Causeway.

Tiznow won again the following year as fans selected his stirring repeat victory in the Classic over Sakhee. In 2002, fans cited the passing of the last living Triple Crown winner, Seattle Slew. In 2003, the popular Kentucky Derby win by Funny Cide was selected. Birdstone's upset win in the Belmont Stakes over Smarty Jones took down top honors for 2004. In 2005, fans selected Afleet Alex's spectacular victory in the 2005 Preakness Stakes.

Voters in 2006 chose Barbaro's gallant struggle to recover from his Preakness injury while at the New Bolton Center. The 2007 Moment of the Year was a historic victory by the filly Rags to Riches over Curlin in the Belmont Stakes. In 2008, it was Zenyatta's win in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic. Zenyatta “repeated” in 2009 as fans selected her triumph in the Breeders' Cup Classic.

In 2010, fans selected Blame's narrow Breeders' Cup Classic victory over Zenyatta. Drosselmeyer's hard-fought win over Game on Dude in the Breeders' Cup Classic was the public's choice for 2011. For 2012, the recovery of Paynter from near-deadly battles with laminitis and colitis captured the hearts of voters like no other story. In 2013, fans recognized Mucho Macho Man's nose victory in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic for his popular connections. The 2014 award went to California Chrome's dominant win in Kentucky Derby 140. In 2015 there was a landslide vote in favor of American Pharoah's historic Triple Crown-clinching Belmont Stakes win. In 2016, California Chrome was again part of the winning moment – a dramatic Dubai World Cup victory that came as Victor Espinoza's saddle slipped out from underneath him.

In 2017, the tragic fire at San Luis Rey and the industry's response led the way among the votes cast while Justify's sweep of the Classics to become just the 13th Triple Crown winner was the clear pick the following year. In 2019, Maximum Security's historic disqualification in the 145th Kentucky Derby — the first winner in Derby history to be demoted for a racing infraction — earned the distinction.

Authentic's stirring triumph in the 146th Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve was voted the 2020 FanDuel Racing-NTRA Moment of the Year.

The Eclipse Awards are sponsored by Roberts Communications, Four Roses Bourbon, Daily Racing Form, Breeders' Cup, FanDuel Group, The Stronach Group and 1/ST Racing, Santa Anita Park, TVG, Dean Dorton, Stonestreet Farm, Keeneland, Racetrack Television Network, Jackson Family Wines, EquinEdge, Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, Hallway Feeds and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association.

The Eclipse Awards are named after the great 18th-century racehorse and foundation sire Eclipse, who began racing at age five and was undefeated in 18 starts, including eight walkovers. Eclipse sired the winners of 344 races, including three Epsom Derbies.

Eleven of the most memorable, significant and reflective events from the last 12 months of Thoroughbred racing in North America are up for the 2021 FanDuel Racing NTRA Moment of the Year, a distinction determined by fan voting and recognized at the Eclipse Awards. Voting is now open on the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) website, NTRA.com, and via Twitter, where every retweet or use of the official hashtag for the moments as presented on the @NTRA account will be counted as one vote.

To vote on the NTRA website, go to: https://www.ntra.com/eclipse-awards/2021-moment-of-the-year/

Votes for the poll must be submitted by February 2 at 11:59 p.m. (ET).

The FanDuel Racing-NTRA Moment of the Year will be revealed during the 51st Annual Eclipse Awards Presented by Fan Duel Racing and Santa Anita Park on February 10, 2022 hosted at Santa Anita Park and streamed on multiple platforms and televised on TVG.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="433" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

The eligible 2021 moments were selected to illustrate the wide range of human emotions and achievements, as well as outstanding displays of athleticism. Events that fans can choose from are listed chronologically as follows, along with the designated hashtag that can be used to vote:

#FlavienSix – Jockey Flavien Prat wins six consecutive races on the March 12 Santa Anita Park card. Prat, a leading California rider who was born in Melun, France, becomes the first jockey to win six consecutive races at Santa Anita since five-time Eclipse Award-winning jockey Laffit Pincay, Jr. did the same on March 14, 1987. (March 12)

#LetruskaBlossom – Letruska battles back in the final strides to upset two-time Eclipse Award winner Monomoy Girl in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom at Oaklawn Park. Facing Eclipse Award winners Monomoy Girl and Swiss Skydiver in Oaklawn's premier race for older fillies and mares, St. George Stable's Letruska sets the early pace, loses the lead to Monomoy Girl and then rallies to best that foe by a nose. (April 17)

#EssentialBelmont – Essential Quality holds off Hot Rod Charlie in a battle to the wire in the Belmont Stakes. A winner of five of six lifetime starts and coming off an upset loss as the favorite in the Kentucky Derby, Eclipse Award champion Essential Quality regains his winning form by prevailing in a stretch-long battle with Hot Rod Charlie. (June 5)

#AllTimeSteve – Steve Asmussen becomes the all-time winningest trainer. The Hall of Fame trainer adds to his career accomplishments in style on Whitney Day at Saratoga by winning his record-setting 9,446th race, topping the late Dale Baird. (August 7)

#Savage – Firenze Fire savages Yaupon in the Forego Stakes. Unable to get past eventual winner Yaupon in the stretch, Firenze Fire resorts to savaging his foe in front of the large Runhappy Travers Day crowd. (Aug. 28)

#DiversityStepForward – George Leonard becomes the first African American trainer to compete in the Breeders' Cup World Championships. That moment came about when California Angel won the JPMorgan Chase Jessamine WAYI at Keeneland to earn an automatic berth into the Juvenile Fillies Turf. (Nov 5)

#GodolphinApplebyTriple – Yibir wins the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf giving Godolphin and conditioner Charlie Appleby their third winner at the World Championships. In addition to Yibir, Godolphin and Appleby teamed to win Saturday's FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile with Space Blues and Friday's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf with Modern Games. (Nov. 5-6)

#JapaneseDuo – Japanese runners Marche Lorraine and Loves Only You win two races on Breeders' Cup Saturday. Breeders' Cup success had eluded Japanese runners as evidenced by an 0-13 record heading into the 2021 Breeders' Cup World Championships. That changes dramatically on November 6 when Marche Lorraine (45-1/Distaff) and Loves Only You (4-1/Filly & Mare Turf) each win for trainer Yoshito Yahagi. (Nov. 6)

#ClassicKnicks – Knicks Go caps a brilliant campaign by winning the Breeders' Cup Classic. Korea Racing Authority's Knicks Go scores impressively over ill-fated Medina Spirit to finish the year on a four-race winning streak for trainer Brad Cox. The 5-year-old son of Paynter amasses three Grade 1 wins in 2021 and earns more than $7.3 million in purse money. (Nov. 6)

#PinkLloydFinale – Seven-time Canadian Champion Pink Lloyd caps a brilliant career with a victory in the Kennedy Road Stakes at Woodbine. Nine-year-old Pink Lloyd, a fan favorite and 2017 Canadian Horse of the Year, wins the Kennedy Road Stakes for the third time and finishes his career with 29 wins from 38 starts. (Nov. 27)

#TakingFlight – Flightline posts a jaw-dropping performance in the Malibu Stakes to cap a brief but brilliant 3-year-old campaign. Undefeated. Unchallenged. Flightline canters home by 11 ½ lengths in the Malibu, his first Grade 1 attempt. The son of Tapit has won his three career starts by a combined 37 ½ lengths for trainer John Sadler. (Dec. 26)

Fans are permitted to vote for multiple moments but there is a limit of one vote per moment for each Twitter account. Subsequent votes from an account will be disqualified. Votes for the poll must be submitted by February 2 at 11:59 p.m. (ET).

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) announced today that Authentic's stirring triumph in the 146th Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve has been voted the 2020 FanDuel Racing-NTRA Moment of the Year based on the results of 3,403 votes cast via Twitter and an online poll.

The winning moment occurred on September 5, 2020 at 7:05 p.m. ET on a day that saw the Run for the Roses contested without fans at Churchill Downs due to the coronavirus pandemic. Under handling from Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, Authentic defeated heavily favored Tiz the Law in the Kentucky Derby to give Spendthrift Farm its first win in the race under the helm of B. Wayne Hughes. The Kentucky Derby triumph also gave Velazquez his 200th career Grade 1 victory and trainer Bob Baffert a record-tying sixth win in the classic.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="433" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Adding to the magnitude of the moment was the fact that Authentic's triumph ignited a celebration from the more than 5,000 owners of My RaceHorse, one of several partners in the ownership of the son of Into Mischief along with Madaket Stables and Starlight Racing.

Represented on Twitter by the hashtag #AuthenticDerby, the winning moment earned 1,363 votes.

The FanDuel Racing-NTRA Moment of the Year will be recognized and memorialized at the 50th Annual Eclipse Awards presented by Spendthrift Farm which will air live on TVG and Racetrack Television Network (RTN) on January 28 at 8 p.m. The ceremony will also be streamed on the following outlets: NTRA.com; America's Best Racing Facebook page and Twitter feed; XBTV Facebook page; DRF.com; Bloodhorse.com; ThoroughbredDailyNews.com; Equibase.com; Breeders' Cup Facebook page and YouTube channel; MyRacehorse Facebook page and YouTube channel; and TOBA.org.

Moment of the Year voters chose from 11 occurrences in 2020 illustrating a range of human emotions as well as outstanding displays of equine athleticism. Authentic's exploits actually accounted for the top two voting choices as his triumph in the Nov. 7 Longines Breeders' Cup Classic in track-record time, represented by the hashtag #AuthenticClassic, finished second in the balloting with 1,010 votes.

Finishing third in the voting was Greg Harbut and Ray Daniels becoming the first Black owners in 13 years to have a Kentucky Derby starter when Necker Island finished ninth in the Run for the Roses. Signified by the hashtag #RepresentationMatters, that moment garnered 508 votes.

The first-ever “NTRA Moment of the Year” was the touching scene between Charismatic and jockey Chris Antley following the 1999 Belmont Stakes.
The Eclipse Awards are sponsored by Spendthrift Farm, Roberts Communications, Four Roses Bourbon, Daily Racing Form, Breeders' Cup, FanDuel Group, The Stronach Group, TVG, Dean Dorton, Stonestreet Farm, Keeneland, Racetrack Television Network, Jackson Family Wines, Florida HBPA, Runhappy, Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, Hallway Feeds and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association.

The Eclipse Awards are named after the great 18th-century racehorse and foundation sire Eclipse, who began racing at age five and was undefeated in 18 starts, including eight walkovers. Eclipse sired the winners of 344 races, including three Epsom Derbies.

The result was based on 3,403 votes cast via Twitter and an online poll.

The winning moment was held under unusual circumstances, with the race delayed from its traditional first Saturday in May spot and held without fans due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Authentic gave Hall of Famer John Velazquez his 200th career Grade I win and trainer Bob Baffert his sixth Derby victory. In addition, it was the first Derby win for B. Wayne Hughes of Spendthrift Farm, whose partners included MyRacehorse.com and over 5,000 microshare owners.

The FanDuel Racing/NTRA Moment of the Year is scheduled to be recognized at the 50th Annual Eclipse Awards presented by Spendthrift Farm Thursday evening. Authentic also accounted for second choice in voting for the Moment of the Year with his Nov. 7 GI Breeders' Cup Classic win. Third in the voting was Greg Harbut and Ray Daniels becoming the first Black owners in 13 years to have a Derby starter when Necker Island (Hard Spun) finished ninth.

An “NTRA Moment of the Year” has been recognized every year since 1999, when the late jockey Chris Antley held Charismatic (Summer Squall)'s leg while waiting for help to arrive following the GI Belmont S.

Eleven of the most memorable, significant and reflective events from the last 12 months of Thoroughbred racing are up for the 2020 FanDuel Racing NTRA Moment of the Year, a distinction determined by fan voting and recognized at the Eclipse Awards. Voting is now open on the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) website, NTRA.com, and via Twitter, where every retweet or use of the official hashtag for the moments as presented on the @NTRA account will be counted as one vote.

To vote on the NTRA website, go to: https://www.ntra.com/2020-moment-of-the-year/. Votes for the poll must be submitted by Jan. 12 at 11:59 p.m. (ET).

The FanDuel Racing-NTRA Moment of the Year will be revealed during a virtual ceremony for the 50th Annual Eclipse Awards on Jan. 28, 2021 hosted from historic Spendthrift Farm in Lexington that will be streamed on multiple platforms and televised on TVG.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="433" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

The eligible 2020 moments were selected to illustrate the wide range of human emotions and achievements, as well as outstanding displays of athleticism. Events that fans can choose from are listed chronologically as follows, along with the designated hashtag that can be used to vote:

#FonnerWillRogers – Fonner Park and Will Rogers Downs shatter respective handle records as they were among the few tracks to continue to operate during the pandemic. With much of racing paused during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, Fonner Park and Will Rogers had the stage largely to themselves as all of their races were shown on TVG and the two tracks posted record numbers for their meets. (March/April)

#BelmontStrong – The Belmont Stakes is the first major sporting event to come back in the state of New York since the start of the coronavirus pandemic and is captured by New York-bred Tiz the Law. With New York Governor Andrew Cuomo giving the call for Riders Up, Tiz the Law was able to give owners Sackatoga Stable their first win in the Belmont Stakes when he prevailed by 3 ¾ lengths. (June 20)

#AuthenticDerby – With no fans in attendance at Churchill Downs, Authentic defeats favored Tiz the Law in the Kentucky Derby to give Spendthrift Farm its first win in the race under the helm of B. Wayne Hughes. The Kentucky Derby triumph also gave Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez his 200th career Grade 1 victory and trainer Bob Baffert a record-tying sixth win in the classic, and was framed by a celebration from the more than 5,000 owners of My RaceHorse, one of several partners in the ownership of the Derby winner. (Sept. 5)

#RepresentationMatters – Against the backdrop of a nationwide reckoning on racial injustice and ongoing protests in Louisville in the wake of the death of Breonna Taylor, Greg Harbut and Ray Daniels become the first Black owners in 13 years to have a Kentucky Derby starter when Necker Island finishes ninth in the Run for the Roses. Harbut and Daniels were featured on both the NBC broadcast and in major outlets such as CNN and they used their platform to champion for greater diversity throughout Thoroughbred racing. (Sept. 5)

#SwissMiss – Swiss Skydiver becomes just the sixth filly to win the Preakness Stakes when she outduels Kentucky Derby winner Authentic. Trained by Kenny McPeek, Swiss Skydiver had previously taken on males in the Blue Grass Stakes, where she finished second, and her Preakness triumph marked her fifth triumph and second G1 victory of 2020. (Oct. 3)

#BreedersCupBrad – Trainer Brad Cox puts a stamp on his outstanding season by winning four Breeders' Cup races during the two-day World Championships at Keeneland, tying the single-event record set by Hall of Famer Richard Mandella. Cox saddled Aunt Pearl to victory in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, Essential Quality to the win in the Juvenile, Knicks Go in the Dirt Mile, and champion Monomoy Girl to her second win in the Breeders' Cup Distaff. (Nov. 6-7)

#HeresWhitmore – Fan-favorite Whitmore showed his 7-year-old legs were as good as ever when he closed to win the Breeders' Cup Sprint in his fourth try, giving trainer Ron Moquett his first career Breeders' Cup win. Whitmore, who competed in the 2016 Kentucky Derby, first raced in the Breeders' Cup in 2017 and had finished second in the Sprint in 2018. (Nov. 7)

#MileSweep – Champion trainer Aidan O'Brien saddles the top three finishers in the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile after previously going 0-for-22 in the race with 73-1 shot Order of Australia delivering the victory. That Mile victory gave O'Brien his 13th career Breeders' Cup win triumph and first victory in the event since 2017. (Nov. 7)

#ReturnOfTheQueen – Monomoy Girl, who missed all of 2019 due to injury and illness, becomes just the fourth horse to win the Breeders' Cup Distaff twice and first since Beholder to win the race in non-consecutive years when she prevailed in 2020. The daughter of Tapizar defeated a field that included Preakness Stakes winner Swiss Skydiver in the Distaff to cap off a 4-for-4 comeback campaign in her 5-year-old season. (Nov. 7)

#AuthenticClassic – Authentic wins the Breeders' Cup Classic in track record time to become the leading contender for multiple seasonal championship honors. After giving trainer Bob Baffert his record-tying sixth win in the Kentucky Derby, Authentic provided his Hall of Fame conditioner his fourth Breeders' Cup Classic victory. (Nov. 7)

#GlamourGirl – One day after winning her second Breeders' Cup Distaff, Monomoy Girl sells to Spendthrift Farm for $9.5 million at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale where it is announced she will remain in training for 2021. Monomoy Girl's final price tied her for second all-time among racing or broodmare prospects sold at public auction in North America. (Nov. 8)

Fans are permitted to vote for multiple moments but there is a limit of one vote per moment for each Twitter account. Subsequent votes from an account will be disqualified. Votes for the poll must be submitted by Jan. 12 at 11:59 p.m. (ET).

Past Moments of the Year:

In 2019, Maximum Security's historic disqualification in the 145th Kentucky Derby – the first winner in Derby history to be demoted for a racing infraction— earned the distinction.
