Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Tuesday's Insights features TDN Rising Star Alcantor (Fr) (New Bay {GB}) in a Deauville Conditions test.

14.33 Deauville, Cond, €34,000, 2yo, c/g, 7 1/2fT
Baron Edouard de Rothschild's ALCANTOR (FR) (New Bay {GB}), a half-brother to G2 Union-Rennen winner Boscaccio (Ger) (Mount Nelson {GB}), looked a class act when elevated to 'TDN Rising Star' status going seven furlongs at Saint-Cloud in June, but lacked a finishing kick behind subsequent G3 Prix de Cabourg third Havana Cigar (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) over six at Chantilly in early July. The March-foaled bay, who hails from the family of dual G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe heroine Treve (Fr) (Motivator {GB}), was withdrawn from a one-mile contest at Clairefontaine earlier in the month and sidesteps Thursday's Listed Criterium du Fonds Europeen de l'Elevage at this venue. He faces a stiff task in his quest for redemption and is the only one of six contenders to have not won last time out.

15.00 Nottingham, Mdn, £6,850, 2yo, f, 6f 18yT
Godolphin homebred CRYSTAL OF TIME (IRE) (Dark Angel {Ire}) is out of the stakes-winning Important Time (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and thus a half-sister to, and Charlie Appleby stablemate of, last term's GI Saratoga Derby Invitational hero and recent G1 Bayerisches Zuchtrennen victor Nations Pride (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}). Her four rivals include George Boughey trainee Rose Branch (GB) (Kingman {GB}), who is out of a full-sister to G1 Oaks heroine Qualify (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}).

15.10 Dundalk, Mdn, €15,000, 2yo, 8f (AWT)
Aidan O'Brien trainee CAPULET (Justify) is a son of G2 Kilboy Estate S. victrix and G1 Nassau S. runner-up Wedding Vow (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), herself a full-sister to G1 Derby hero Serpentine (Ire). He opens up in a contest won last year by the stable with subsequent G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud third and G1 Irish Derby and G1 Grand Prix de Paris second Adelaide River (Ire) (Australia {GB}). Opposition includes the twice-raced Huxley (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a half-brother to G1 Prix Ganay-winning sire Cloth Of Stars (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), who ran fourth behind the 'TDN Rising Star' display of subsequent G2 Superlative S. winner City Of Troy (Justify) at the Curragh last month.

Friday's Observations features Tattersalls Craven Breeze up co-topper Vandeek (Havana Grey).

14:15 Nottingham, Mdn, £6,850, 2yo, 6f 18yT
VANDEEK (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) emerges a touch later than would have been expected from a colt who at 625,000gns was the joint sale topper at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up. Simon and Ed Crisford introduce KHK Racing Ltd's grey from the family of the sires Anabaa and Key Of Luck against last month's Newmarket runner-up Never So Brave (Ire) (No Nay Never), a Saeed Suhail-Sir Michael Stoute project who was close enough to TDN Rising Star Ancient Wisdom (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}) to suggest he has ability.

14.25 Newbury, Novice, £12,000, 2yo, 7fT
TRAFALGAR SQUARE (IRE) (Too Darn Hot {GB}), a 600,000gns Book 1 graduate, is introduced by Andrew Balding for Qatar Racing in the maiden the stable won 12 months ago with Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and which saw Bayside Boy (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) prevail the year previously. A son of the G2 May Hill S. scorer and G1 Prix Marcel Boussac runner-up Turret Rocks (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and half-brother to last month's G3 Jersey S. winner Age Of Kings (Ire) (Kingman {GB}), he has it to do to match up to the Westerberg colour-bearer Maximum Dividend (Ire) (American Pharoah), a Richard Hannon-trained son of the G3 Give Thanks S. winner Sizzling (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who was such a promising nose second to Juddmonte's Starlore (GB) (Kingman {GB}) at Sandown a fortnight ago.

HOW THEY FARED
18.20 Leopardstown, Mdn, €16,000, 2yo, f, 8fT
Andromeda (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the full-sister to the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Peaceful (Ire), put up a debut full of promise in second.

Racing Welfare's Racing Staff Week returns for its seventh year this Saturday, June 24, the charity announced on Monday. The industry's annual celebration of people who work in British horseracing brings together the racing business and its followers to recognize the workers inside the industry. Sponsored by Betfair, this year will see five charity races specifically for stable staff, as well as a number of community events and a competitions with prizes of £500 in vouchers awarded to the winners. Races will be held at Ayr, Chepstow, Newbury, Nottingham and Newcastle throughout the week.

“Racing Staff Week is the highlight in our community calendar,” Racing Welfare's Head of Community Engagement Adam Ferguson said. “It provides a brilliant opportunity for everyone in the industry to celebrate the dedication, passion and skill of racing's people, whether that be through supporting our stable staff riders, attending or hosting a community event or entering the thank you competition. We're looking forward to getting started on Saturday and encourage anyone working in racing to get involved if they can.”

Tracking the early pace under Rob Hornby, the Ralph Beckett-trained 7-2 shot mastered the 4-6 favourite Desert Master (GB) (Blue Point {Ire}) approaching the furlong pole before staying on strongly to beat that rival by 3 3/4 lengths.

“He'll be better over six–he's a laid-back horse and he needed to be kept interested but galloped out strongly once he figured out what to do,” his rider said of the son of the dual listed-placed Pack Together (GB) (Paco Boy {Ire}). “It was a case of keeping him racing and competitive and that's how he's been trained at home. He's a big strong and heavy colt and all there. He's shown a bit of class and this is a minimum trip for him–he's done that on raw ability.”

On a day when there was a lurch in the Derby market, there was enough intrigue and substance in Nottingham's Visit racingtv.com Novice S. to make it a mini-Classic trial and enough in the performance of the Simon and Ed Crisford-trained West Wind Blows (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) to earn TDN Rising Star status. Carrying a seven-pound penalty for his debut score over this 10-furlong trip on Newcastle's Tapeta after Christmas, Abdulla Al Mansoori's son of the G1 Prix de Diane heroine West Wind (GB) (Machiavellian) from the family of Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) soon wrested control on the front end from Return To Dubai (Ire) (Ribchester {Ire}) under forcing tactics from Jack Mitchell. Powerful throughout, the hooded bay who started at 17-2 lugged towards the rail when the result was already settled inside the final furlong but hit the line strong in a smart time to record a five-length success from that Saeed bin Suroor trainee. There was another 1 3/4-length margin back to the Gosdens' Franz Strauss (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}) in third, with that G3 Sandown Classic Trial fourth getting seven pounds from the impressive winner.

Prior to Friday's demolition job, the wilful West Wind Blows had been withdrawn from Newbury's 10-furlong Dubai Duty Free Golf World Cup British EBF Conditions S. Apr. 17 after he unseated his rider and got loose before the start. Godolphin's Walk of Stars (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) won that and runs in Saturday's Listed Lingfield Derby Trial, but West Wind Blows also holds an entry in the June 4 G1 Cazoo Derby and his rider was not pouring cold water on the idea of his mount taking up the option. “I don't see why not,” Mitchell said. “The Derby is quite wide open this year and he's done everything right. I think he'll get a mile and a half–he just needs to cool down a bit in his head but he's a horse going places. That felt very good–coming to a novice with a penalty is hard enough, but Simon and Ed always said how nice he is. He's a typical Teofilo and is a bit quirky, but he's got talent. There was some good form in that race.”

As mentioned, the winner is the eighth foal out of the 2007 Diane heroine whose sole black-type performer to date is the G3 Eclipse S. runner-up Setting Sail (GB) (Dansili {GB}), GSP-Aus, $125,876. The second dam is the G2 Sun Chariot S. winner Red Slippers (Nureyev), whose daughter Eastern Joy (GB) (Dubai Destination) has emerged as one of Godolphin's most distinguished producers. She is responsible for six black-type scorers including the four-times group 1 and grade I-winning dual Dubai World Cup hero Thunder Snow (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}), the G2 May Hill S. winner and G1 1000 Guineas-placed Ihtimal (Ire) (Shamardal) and Always Smile (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) who was runner-up in the G1 Sun Chariot S. and third in the G1 Falmouth S.

Also out of Eastern Joy is the G3 Oh So Sharp S. scorer First Victory (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), whose aforementioned son Coroebus provided the latest major update to the family on Saturday. This is a dynasty steeped in Godolphin success, with Red Slippers being a half-sister to the G1 Irish Derby and G1 Epsom Oaks heroine Balanchine (Storm Bird). Under the third dam Morning Devotion (Affirmed) is the G1 Irish Derby hero Sovereign (Ire), by Teofilo's sire Galileo (Ire). West Wind's 2-year-old colt is a full-brother to the winner, who is the second TDN Rising Star for his sire after the recent splash made by Wexford Native (Ire).
