ADVANCE PHAROAH (c, 2, American Pharoah–Fair Huntress, by Tiznow) debuted with a sound runner-up effort going 1400 meters over the dirt at Tokyo June 19, but shortened up to graduate nicely over 1150 meters at Fukushima last time July 17 (see below, SC 10). Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Hanshin and Fukushima Racecourses. Group 1 racing in Japan returns next weekend with the stayers center stage in the Tenno Sho (Spring) over two miles, but this Sunday's action sees the return of a pair of very exciting American-bred gallopers at the lower grades:

CUTE VILLAIN (f, 3, Arrogate–She Be Wild, by Offlee Wild) cost Katsumi Yoshida $550K at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale on the occasion of her second birthday after the daughter of 2009 Eclipse Award-winning juvenile filly She Be Wild zipped an eighth of a mile in :10 flat (see below). The dark bay began chipping away at that investment when lengthening clear to graduate by seven lengths going this distance on Chukyo debut Jan. 29 (video, SC 10) and figures tough to handle in this second go. 9th-FKS, ¥19,530,000 ($152k), Allowance, 3yo, 1200mT
GRAN APLAUSO (c, 3, Gun Runner–Fiducia, by Medaglia d'Oro) became the first winner on turf from his exciting sire (by Candy Ride {Arg})'s first crop when carrying Yutaka Take to a one-length debut in one of last year's early newcomers' races at Sapporo June 20 (see below, SC 16). Ticketed for group company off that effort, he suffered an injury which has kept him on the sidelines for the past 10 months. The colt's stakes-winning and Group 3-placed dam is a daughter of champion Believe (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), who is also responsible for MGSW & G1SP Gendarme (Kitten's Joy) and MSW & MGSP Faridat (Kingmambo). 11th-HSN, Yomiuri Milers' Cup-G2, ¥114m ($890k), 4/up, 1mT
AIR FANDITHA (h, 5, Hat Trick {Jpn}–Nokaze, by Empire Maker) is one of four winners from four to race out of a winning half-sister to SW Yuzuru (Medaglia d'Oro), whose daughter Yuugiri (Shackleford) will carry the silks of these breeders in the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks after winning the GIII Fantasy S. last time out. Air Fanditha became the second black-type winner out of Nokaze when coming from a near-impossible position to score in listed company over this course and distance Feb. 12 (see below, SC 6). The four winners out of the mare, including GSW Air Almas (Majestic Warrior), have combined to win an impressive 16 times on the extremely competitive JRA circuit. While the 3-year-old filly set was front and center for last weekend's G1 Oka Sho, their male counterparts get their chance in Sunday's G1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas), and though there are no American-bred runners in the field of 18, several of the colts were produced by mares sourced at the Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland November Mixed Sales. JASPER KRONE (c, 3, Frosted–Fancy Kitten, by Kitten's Joy), a $25K Keeneland September yearling turned $90K OBS March breezer, has already punched well above his weight, with two victories and two minor placings from five starts, including a cozy success in what amounts to a first-level allowance going six furlongs at Nakayama Mar. 26 (see below, SC 2). The chestnut, who hails from the female family of Jump Start and Mastery, is joined in the field by Dugat (Practical Joke) ($190K 2yo '21 OBSMAR), whose commonly owned stable companion Jean Gros (More Than Ready) wired the field in the G2 New Zealand Trophy Apr. 9. JEAN GROS (c, 3, More Than Ready–Goodbye Stranger, by Broad Brush), a $130K Keeneland September buyback turned $265K OBS March breezer, has won three of his seven trips to the post, his last two over the metric six furlongs, including record-setting success at Chukyo in December and an impressive victory in the Listed Marguerite S. at this venue Feb. 27. (see below, SC 7). Blackstone Farm acquired Goodbye Stranger carrying the foal that would become MGSW & GISP Tom's Ready for $40K at Keeneland January in 2013. The mare was resold to Nursery Place for $120 with this foal in utero at KEEJAN in 2019. Jean Gros stretches back out to a mile for this first attempt at group level. MOZU BONHEUR (f, 3, Street Sense–Endless Chatter, by First Samurai) was well-beaten on debut over the dirt at Chukyo last Decembeer, but showed some improvement when tried over a nine-furlong trip on the grass at this track 17 days later. A $200K KEESEP yearling, the Apr. 7 foal is out of Endless Chatter, who carried the silks of this breeder to a victory in the Summer Colony S. at Saratoga and a third placing in the GI Beldame S. in 2014. Endless Chatter, who drops back to seven furlongs here, is a daughter of Ornate (A.P. Indy), a full-sister to Claiborne's outstanding late sire Pulpit who is also the dam of SW & G1SP Whitecliffsofdover (War Front). B-Alpha Delta Stables LLC (KY)
