The first-place King of the Turf finisher will receive an entry to the 2025 National Horseplayers Championships (NHC) and an entry into the 2024 Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge (BCBC), worth $10,000. In addition, the winner gets the designation as National Turf Handicapper of the Year and receives the Global Tote King of the Turf Championship belt.

At least five NHC packages and two BCBC berths are guaranteed to be awarded to the King of the Turf's top finishers. Additional prizes will be awarded based on the total number of entries. The tournament host takes no money out of the entry fees, with 100% going to the prize pool and players' bankrolls.

The 2024 meet will also feature two Play-In tournaments on Aug. 29 and Sept. 1. These competitions will have a $300 and $400 entry fee, respectively. Each event will feature two 2025 NHC entries plus entries to the $2,500 King of the Turf finals. Additional prizes will be awarded based on the number of entries. Online qualifiers for the King of the Turf finals and the Play-In tournaments will be announced later.

“We reconfigured the King of the Turf Handicapping Challenge into a single-day extravaganza that will offer more prize money and more prizes,” said Ted Nicholson, Kentucky Downs' vice president for racing. “We think the format will be attractive to big bettors and contest players while also providing play-in tournaments with much smaller entry fees. With inexpensive and sometimes free online qualifiers to both the play-in and championship, everyone has a chance to try to be King of the Turf and get the Global Tote belt.”

Phil Lam, the 2023 King of the Turf winner, will be presented his personalized Global Tote belt at the NHC at Horseshoe Las Vegas (formerly Bally's) March 15-17.

Players must bet a minimum of $300 per race for at least five races on the 12-race card, utilizing win, place, show, exacta and daily double wagering. The contest is conducted via online wagering through FanDuel/TVG, Xpressbet, NJBets and HPI Canada.

Online qualifiers for entries into the play-in tournaments and the 2024 King of the Turf Championship will be announced later.

Costello had already qualified twice for the NHC Finals, the maximum number of seats for the final prize money in Las Vegas set for March 2024. So, his seat was allotted to the fifth-place finisher as the top four players advanced to the NHC Qualifier from the event.

Joining Costello to earn prize money was Pat Cronin finishing second and winning $2,000, Kevin Harrell who finished third and won $1,000 and Mark Myrick who finished fourth and won $500. Bob Mack was the fifth-place finisher and will join Cronin, Harrell and Myrick for a seat at the final held at Las Vegas March 15-17, 2024.

“I play in several tournaments each year, but not a lot,” said Costello. “I've played in this one at Horseshoe Indianapolis before. I like the format and it worked out where I had the day off to run down and play in it.”

“Protecting the integrity of the NTRA and the NHC tournament is among my highest priorities in this job,” said NTRA President and CEO Tom Rooney. “By not initially releasing the names of the players involved, even though our rules give us broad discretion to do so for all prize winners, I believed I was doing what was best for the NHC. The demand from the public we have received far outweighs my personal beliefs. I highly value the opinion of the horseplayers' community, without whom our sport would not be what it is and whom we work with to protect all NHC sanctioned contests throughout the year.”

These three players controlled five entries in the 2023 NHC. The event paid out to the top 78 entries. The NTRA has officially disqualified the five entries controlled by these individuals and will proceed to move all other entries up in the prize structure. The entries that finished 79-83 who did not make the initial cut will be moved into the prize structure. Additionally, the NTRA will distribute the difference in prize money for all other entries that move up in the prize structure. The NTRA will mail checks to all individuals involved and the official leaderboard has been updated.

TAA will also be on site for the Last Chance First Chance NHC Qualifier to which NTRA donated a VIP opportunity through TAA's Off to the Races online auction of VIP race experiences. The winning bidder will compete for their spot to remain at Horseshoe Las Vegas and enter the NHC in the following days.

“The NTRA is proud to recognize the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance as an official charity of the National Horseplayers Championship (NHC),” said NTRA President and CEO Tom Rooney. “The competition and camaraderie among the participants, along with their universal love of the Thoroughbred, are a big part of what makes the NHC such a great event.”

“Thank you to NTRA for once again recognizing and supporting accredited Thoroughbred aftercare on the national stage of the NHC event,” said TAA Office Manager Catherine Flowers. “TAA is proud to be supported by the racing industry, which includes these talented horseplayers, and it is so exciting to celebrate horseplayers giving back to the Thoroughbreds that have given all of us so much.”

The suspension was issued by the NTRA following discussions and a recommendation by the NHC Players' Committee, a group of NHC players who act as a sounding board on NHC policy and rule matters. The suspension covers the 2022 and 2023 NHC Tour seasons and the 2023 and 2024 NHCs.

“Maintaining the integrity of the NHC is of the utmost importance,” said NTRA President and CEO Tom Rooney. “We look forward to making the 2022 NHC Tour and the 2023 NHC the best ever.”

According to a report in HorseRacingNation.com, the disqualified player was Jonathon Kinchen, the Fox Sports racing analyst and a tournament regular who won the NHC Tour title in 2015. Kinchen reportedly left Las Vegas to attend Saturday's Pegasus World Cup day races at Gulfstream Park in Florida and had his tournament bets made in Las Vegas by an associate.
