Big Rock (Fr) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}) is one of the star names among 21 entries for the £400,000 G1 Al Shaqab Lockinge S. at Newbury on Saturday, May 18.

Trained by Christopher Head, Big Rock ended his three-year-old campaign with an emphatic six-length win in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. at Ascot in October, finally making the breakthrough at the top level following a hat-trick of runner-up finishes. He could be joined at Newbury by Andre Fabre's Tribalist (GB) (Farhh {GB}), who won the G3 Prix Edmond Blanc for the second year in succession at Saint-Cloud on Monday. Big Rock and Tribalist are the only French-trained entries in a race they haven't won since Keltos (Fr) struck for Carlos Laffon-Parias in 2002.

The home team is headed by three multiple Group 1 winners trained by John and Thady Gosden, namely Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}), Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}). Lord North and Nashwa both reappeared on Dubai World Cup night when they finished eighth and ninth, respectively, in the G1 Dubai Turf, while the five-year-old Inspiral has been off the track since gaining the sixth top-level success of her career in the Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita in November.

Commenting on future plans for Nashwa, Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner-breeder Imad Alsagar, said, “It depends how she comes out of the race [in Dubai]. She recovered fine, but we'll see how she takes the trip home and then we'll make a plan. She's in the Middleton [at York on Thursday, May 16] and the Lockinge and I think those would be the most likely potential targets.

“She's run a super race and everything pretty much went to plan,” Grimthorpe added of Nashwa's Dubai Turf effort. “She just had to use herself up a little too much, but she was beaten just over four lengths, so overall we were very encouraged really. We'd hope she'll improve, as she did last season.”

The Gosden yard could also be represented in the Lockinge by G3 Criterion S. winner Audience (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}) and Laurel (GB) (Kingman {GB}), who has been on the sidelines since finishing down the field in last year's renewal. Laurel is one of two possible runners in the famous Juddmonte silks which were last carried to victory in the Lockinge by the great Frankel in 2012. The other Juddmonte entry is the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Nostrum (GB) (Kingman {GB}), who hails from the most successful stable in the race's history with eight wins.

Other entries of note include the placed horses from last year's G1 2000 Guineas, Hi Royal (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) and Royal Scotsman (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}), plus Charyn (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), who impressed when making a successful return to action in the Listed Doncaster Mile S. for Roger Varian.

The first scratching stage is by noon on Tuesday, April 30, with final confirmation stage by noon on Monday, May 13.

Cheltenham Festival-winning jockey Steve Jobar was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in April 2022. Shocked to discover that there wasn't a cure or any form of effective treatment for his illness, he set about raising funds for research into a cure for future generations.

With the assistance of his committee, Jobar, who won the 1980 Triumph Hurdle for David Elsworth aboard Heighlin, has organised a fundraising lunch and race for the MND Association at Newbury on March 22.

“You will not be surprised to hear that we have received some amazingly generous support from racing folk,” said committee member Jonathan Powell.

“We have sold all 45 tables of ten at the lunch, have sponsors for his race and the wine and have been given dozens of tempting items for the auction conducted by the comedy duo of John Francome and Richard Phillips.

“Steve's Justgiving page has already raised over £7,000. In addition, we are raffling a new car at £20 a ticket. If the winner does not want the car he or she will collect £13,000.

“Every penny goes to the MND Association and to our surprise and delight we are on course to raise over £100,000 on March 22. Half will go to research into a cure for MND, the other half to the local branch of association who have provided invaluable support and pastoral care for Steve and his wife Dottie from day one.”

Powell added, “Steve is losing weight, survives on liquids now and it is impossible to understand his speech but he remains wonderfully defiant at what lies ahead.”

You can donate to Steve Jobar's campaign via his JustGiving page.

The inaugural Goffs UK Coral Gold Cup Sale of young National Hunt prospects was held after racing at Newbury on Saturday with 18 of the 21 horses offered sold for a total of £2,145,000.

Two horses shared top billing at £200,000. The Muhtahir (GB) filly Half Past Tipsy (Ire) (lot 6) was bought from Sam Curling's Skehanagh Stables by Gavin Cromwell after winning a 4-year-old mares' maiden point-to-point last month.

Matching her leading price later in the select catalogue was The Bluesman (Fr) (Crillon {Fr}) (lot 18), a 4-year-old half-brother to listed-winning hurdler Fiumcino (Fr) Sageburg {Ire}), who won his sole start between the flags for Denis Murphy's Ballyboy Stables. He was bought by agent Tom Malone on behalf of champion trainer Paul Nicholls.

The average and the median prices were closely aligned at £119,167 and £110,000, respectively.

Goffs UK's Managing Director Tim Kent said, “Say no to a one-horse race. It was on these foundations that we decided to launch our new Coral Gold Cup Sale as we firmly believe that competition is vital for the bloodstock market. To come to Newbury after a 10-year absence and deliver this sale has been a wonderful result for Goffs and we would like to thank our loyal vendors who backed this venture with some of their very best horses and were rightly rewarded. As ever, there is always an unknown element to any new venture and we are delighted to have delivered yet another vibrant and lively sale at a top-class race meeting.

“The whole team at Newbury Racecourse have been fantastic to work with and the venue is superb for these sales so we are excited about a long and fruitful association with the wonderful Coral Gold Cup meeting.”

The G3 Horris Hill S. and the G3 St Simon S. have both been rescheduled for early November, the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) confirmed on Friday.

Both races were set to take place at Newbury on Oct. 28. That meeting was abandoned. The St Simon will now be staged on Friday, Nov. 3 at Newmarket, with the Horris Hill taking place at that venue the day after. Original entries for both races have been cancelled and entries for these replacement races will now close at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 31. In addition, the Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) will be making an increased contribution above the scheduled ratecard payment for these races. There will also be an additional all-weather fixture at Lingfield on Wednesday, Nov. 1, the BHA also confirmed.

The first Coral Gold Cup Sale, featuring select point-to-pointers at Newbury Racecourse on Saturday, Dec. 2, was launched by Goffs on Thursday.

Held after racing on Coral Gold Cup Day in the Newbury winner's enclosure, the sale is the latest offering by the sales company that also conducts point-to-point sales at Aintree, Punchestown, Sandown and Yorton among other locales. In the past, Newbury also featured on that list, and a sale there set a world-record price for a National Hunt horse-in-training at public auction when Un Temps Pour Tout (Ire) (Robin Des Champs {Fr}) sold for £450,000 in 2013, prior to the course's redevelopment.

Goffs, UK Managing Director Tim Kent said, “We are excited by the opportunities Newbury will offer as the racecourse has undergone extensive redevelopment since our last sale there just under 10 years ago and it now offers facilities that are second to none. Combined with the world-class Coral Gold Cup meeting, which is always attended by so many leading owners and trainers, it is ideally suited to have a sale of this nature, so we will use our extensive knowledge and experience, learned from years of offsite sales, to make this a success.

“We would like to extend our thanks to the Newbury Racecourse executive for their enthusiastic backing of this event, we look forward to working with them in the coming weeks and, of course, to offering a world-class catalogue of pointers on Saturday, 2 December.”

The two-day Coral Gold Cup meeting features the Listed Mares' Novices' Hurdle, the G2 John Francome Novices' Chase and the Coral Gold Cup.

Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby added, “No matter the industry or profession, competition is vital for a healthy market. Goffs thrives on offering vibrant competition to the market and it is in that spirit that we head to Newbury to launch The Coral Gold Cup Sale.

“Goffs have conducted off-site boutique sales all over the world with huge success; think London, Dubai, Hong Kong, as well as our PTP sales, our record speaks for itself and we will bring the same dynamic, customer focussed approach to Newbury which will benefit from our experienced and respected teams in the UK and Ireland.”

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Friday's Observations features the return of a 'TDN Rising Star'.

13.40 Saint-Cloud, Cond, €34,000, 2yo, f, 7 1/2fT
BAUHINIA (IRE) (Too Darn Hot {GB}) earned TDN Rising Star status at ParisLongchamp last month and Godolphin's daughter of the G2 Rockfel S.-placed Desert Blossom (Ire) (Shamardal) is kept away from black-type company for now by Andre Fabre. Among her opponents is Ecurie des Charmes's Deauville conditions scorer Opera Mundi (Ire) (Kingman {GB}), a Carlos & Yann Lerner-trained relative of the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud winner Plumania (GB) (Anabaa) and G1 Prix Vermeille winner Left Hand (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}).

14.25 Newbury, Cond, £20,000, 2yo, f, 7fT
INVERSION (GB) (Frankel {GB}) makes her debut in this Dubai Duty Free Full of Surprises British EBF Fillies' Conditions S. which obviously enjoys a special resonance with the Charlton stable, having won it for three of the last five years including with the subsequent G1 Fillies' Mile heroine Quadrilateral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and with this Juddmonte homebred's half-sister Lucid Dreamer (GB) (Dansili {GB}). Also successful with L'Ancresse (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}) in 2002, their runner this time is also a half-sister to the recent GI Diana S. winner Whitebeam (GB) (Caravaggio).

16.40 Kempton, Novice, £9,900, 2yo, 7fT
MILITARY LEADER (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) is introduced by Charlie Appleby at a track at which he likes to run his smart juveniles and this is a half-brother to this year's G1 Coronation S. third Sounds Of Heaven (GB) (Kingman {GB}). A 1.5million gns Tatts Book 1 purchase, he hails from the spectacularly successful Kilfrush Stud family of Galileo's Hydrangea (Ire), The United States (Ire) and Hermosa (Ire).

17.15 Kempton, Novice, £9,900, 2yo, 7fT
AGE OF BAROQUE (FR) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) is another Godolphin-Appleby project starting out on the Polytrack, being a grandson of the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp winner Grey Lilas (Ire) (Danehill) from the immediate family of the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and G1 Prix de Diane heroine Golden Lilac (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Costing €575,000 at last year's Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale, the Februray-foaled bay has some experienced peers to overcome including Victorious Racing's 360,000gns Tatts Craven Breeze-Up graduate Military Artist (Munnings) from the Roger Varian stable.

Having caused a 50-1 shock in Royal Ascot's Buckingham Palace H., William Stobart's Witch Hunter (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) was at it again on Saturday as he swooped to conquer in Newbury's seven-furlong G2 Hungerford S. Tried over six furlongs after his Royal success, the Richard Hannon-trained gelding had found the action a touch too quick when third in Newcastle's G3 Chipchase S. before failing to handle Chester's tight track when third in the Listed City Plate S. and running fourth over a mile in Pontefract's Listed Pomfret S. Switched off in rear early by Sean Levey, the 12-1 was delivered stand's side to overhaul the 3-year-old New Endeavour (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) with half a furlong remaining and score by a length, with 3 3/4 lengths back to the winner's stablemate and 2-1 favourite Chindit (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) in third.

Richard Hannon wins the @BetVictor Hungerford Stakes, but not with the one you might have expected!

The improving Witch Hunter storms home from off the pace to land the G2 feature, while stablemate Chindit, sent off 2-1 fav, was left trailing in third.@NewburyRacing pic.twitter.com/NFDnis31Vf

“He won at Royal Ascot and you can't get better then that, but he's improved all year,” Hannon said of the winner. “I'm a bit disappointed with Chindit, but he's not as good when confronted with a rain-softened surface. Chindit was the best horse and you couldn't see Witch Hunter winning, but looking back he was very unlucky not to win the all-weather championships at Lingfield, while Jamie Spencer gave him a great ride at Ascot. Chindit will go to Mr Poonawalla's stud in India.”

Pedigree Notes
Witch Hunter, who is kin to the Listed Criterium du FEE winner Medley Chic (Ire) (Medicean {GB}), is out of the G3 Prix d'Arenberg scorer Sorciere (Ire) (Orpen). She is the leading performer out of Serandine (Ire) (Hernando {Fr}), a half to the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud winner Shaka (GB) (Exit To Nowhere) who was responsible for the listed scorer Seralia (GB) (Royal Academy), in turn the dam of three black-type performers headed by Exit To Nowhere's G3 Prix de Psyche winner Serisia (Fr).

Serisia produced the G1 Norton S. and G1 Ranvet S.-winning Australian champion miler Contributor (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}), while this is also the family of this year's G2 King Edward VII S. winner and G1 Derby and G1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth S.-placed King Of Steel (Wootton Bassett {GB}). Sorciere's yearling colt by Hello Youmzain (Fr) had sold for €90,000 24 hours prior to this race to Marco Bozzi Bloodstock at the Arqana Deauville August Sale.

ARRAY (IRE) (No Nay Never) wins the award for the day's best-bred newcomer, being the sixth foal out of Juddmonte's prized mare Joyeuse (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) who shares her famed dam Kind (Ire) (Danehill) with the great Frankel (GB). Not surprisingly, given his achievements with the Juddmonte giant's son Chaldean (GB), Andrew Balding has been handed care of homebred whose half-siblings include the Group 1-placed Maximal (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and Jubiloso (GB) (Shamardal).

16.45 Haydock, Novice, £9,999, 2yo, 6f 212yT
HIDDEN PASS (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) was a big deal at the Arqana May Breeze Up, with Godolphin going to €400,000 for the Shadwell-bred half-brother to the G2 Let's Elope S. winner Turaath (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). Charlie Appleby introduces the February-foaled chestnut in the race which saw Desert Hero

(GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) earn TDN Rising Star status 12 months ago and which also plays host to Coverdale Stud's Tribal Rhythm (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}), a James Horton-trained half-brother to last month's G1 King's Stand S. hero Bradsell (GB) (Tasleet {GB}).

QIPCO British Champions Series (QBCS) will sponsor a set of maiden races this autumn to help strengthen the 2-year-old programme in Great Britain. The four races will be run at the QBCS racecourses of Doncaster, Goodwood, Newbury and York. Each race will be run for a total prize fund of £30,000.

The QIPCO British Champions Series-sponsored maidens are scheduled from late-August to October, offering a springboard to compete in the 2024 Series, which kicks off at the QIPCO 2000 Guineas in May.

David Redvers, QIPCO's representative and Racing Manager to Qatar Racing, said: “We are delighted to be supporting this initiative to boost prize money for developmental races and enhance the competitiveness of the British racing and breeding industries.”

The four newly sponsored races are made up as follows:

Tuesday, Aug. 29 – Newbury

QIPCO British Champions Series Maiden Fillies' S., 6f

Wednesday, Sept. 27 – Goodwood

QIPCO British Champions Series EBF Maiden S., 1m 2f

Saturday, Oct. 14 – York

Coral EBF Maiden S. (QIPCO British Champions Series 2YO Race), 1m

QIPCO British Champions Series EBF Maiden Fillies' S., 1m

Richard Wayman, Chief Operating Officer for the BHA, said: “Well-funded development races provide an opportunity to boost returns to owners in the early stages of their horse's career, thereby potentially supporting the yearling market and, in doing so, assisting breeders at all levels.”
