Following last week's announcement of record prize-money across the Jockey Club's portfolio of racecourses, Newbury has followed suit by increasing its prize-money for 2024 to £7 million, which is also a record figure. The 13% increase in purses will be spread across 31 fixtures, 11 of which are denoted as 'premier' meetings and the the other 20 as 'core' fixtures.

The G1 Al Shaqab Lockinge S. will this year be run for £400,000, up from £350,000, and again on a card which is one of the World Pool meetings in Britain. Also receiving as boost is the G3 Geoffrey Freer S., which is now worth £90,000, and the G2 Hungerford S., to £125,000, while the G3 Dubai International World Trophy and G2 Mill Reef S. receive prize-money boosts of £15,000 and £10,000 respectively, to £85,000 and £100,000. Furthermore, all Class 5 handicaps in Flat core fixtures are guaranteed to be run for a minimum of £11,000, up from £8,650 in 2023.

“We have been able to make two successive years of significant advances in our prize-money mainly due to our new media arrangements with Sky Sports Racing and our board are pleased to be able to do so at a time when the industry really needs such an investment,” said Julian Thick, chief executive of Newbury Racecourse.

“It is well known there are significant headwinds facing racecourses and further prize-money increases in years to come will be very much dependant on Newbury being able to navigate these and create increased commercial returns through other trading activities such as growing attendances, that can then be shared with our industry partners. Once again, my thanks must go to all our sponsors for their continued support and we very much look forward to the season ahead and welcoming horses, connections and racegoers back to Newbury to enjoy top-class racing action.”

Shaun Hinds has been appointed as the new chief executive officer of Newbury Racecourse, succeeding Julian Thick who announced his resignation in August, the racecourse announced on Wednesday. Thick served in the role for 10 years.

Hinds will begin his tenure as CEO and join the company's board in the summer of 2024 once he has served out his notice period with his current employer, Manchester Central Convention Centre. He has held that role for the past 6 1/2 years.

Dominic Burke, the chairman of Newbury Racecourse PLC, said, “Julian has made an enormous contribution to Newbury over the past ten years. We wish him the very best for the future.

“The board is delighted to be announcing Shaun's appointment following a wide-ranging and competitive search. Shaun has a longstanding interest in racing stemming from his childhood in Newmarket and will work closely with clerk of the course, George Hill. Shaun's proven success in running a business with multiple physical assets combined with his wealth of commercial experience made him the outstanding candidate.”

Hinds added, “It's a great privilege to be joining a racecourse with the prestige and heritage of Newbury, and I'd like to thank Dominic and the board for the opportunity. I'm tremendously excited to be joining such a fantastic team.”

Juddmonte's G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud runner-up Arrest (Ire) (Frankel {GB}–Nisriyna {Ire}, by Intikhab) had failed to build upon a wide-margin triumph in May's G3 Chester Vase, but regained the winning thread and punched his ticket to next month's G1 St Leger with a pillar-to-post victory in Saturday's G3 BetVictor Geoffrey Freer S at Newbury.

Remaining out wide lobbing along on the lead before taking the shortest route around the sweeping home turn, the 5-6 favourite was shaken up in the centre of the track with three furlongs remaining and maintained a high tempo inside the final quarter-mile to easily withstand the late threat of Ching Shih (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) by a geared-down 1 1/2 lengths. Roger Varian trainee Shandoz (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}) fared best of the remainder and finished six lengths adrift in third.

The G1 Derby 10th and G2 King Edward VII S. fifth becomes a record-breaking fifth winner of the contest for Frankie Dettori and a first for the Gosden stable since Presenting (GB) (Mtoto {GB}) obliged in 1995.

“Everyone expected the ground to be a bog, but it's good-to-soft, and he was the Derby favourite so he had to do that,” said Dettori. “He's one card for the St Leger, but let's see how Gregory gets on next Wednesday [in the G2 Great Voltigeur]. He's one of a bunch of top horses John [Gosden] is sending to York, it's a very strong team and I can't wait. Soft ground is not an issue with him and if it's soft at Doncaster it would be fine.”

The third annual IRE Incentive Raceday at Newbury on Friday, July 21, will be sponsored by Irish Thoroughbred Marketing.

The day's feature race will be the Listed IRE Incentive It Pays To Buy Irish Rose Bowl S. for 2-year-olds. Three additional juvenile races on the card will also be included in the ITM IRE Incentive scheme. Should the winner of any 2-year-old race on the day be Irish-bred and foal levy compliant, the winning owner will receive a €10,000 sales bonus, which can be redeemed against other Irish-bred and foal levy compliant horses at any Irish sale. To date, over €2.5 million in IRE Incentive bonuses has been paid out to over 200 individual owners. For more details, please visit the ITM website.

ITM CEO Charles O'Neill said, “With nine scheme races across Ireland and Britain this weekend, we are hoping for a bonus bonanza. To award nine individual owners with bonuses ahead of the Irish yearling sales beginning this September would be the dream. The scheme is proving very popular, with British and Irish trainers targeting IRE Incentive races with a view to winning a bonus or two in time for this year's Irish yearling sales.”

There was high drama at the beginning of Saturday's G3 Watership Down Stud Too Darn Hot Greenham S. at Newbury when Frankie Dettori parted company with G1 Dewhurst S. hero and leading G1 2000 Guineas contender Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) upon exiting the stalls, which allowed Manton Thoroughbreds VII's reopposing Dewhurst seventh Isaac Shelby (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}–Kentucky Belle {Ire}, by Heliostatic {Ire}) a free run to make all for a second pattern-race triumph in the seven-furlong feature. Last term's G2 Superlative S. victor was swiftly into stride, away from the early carnage, and gained immediate control. Unflustered on the front end for the most part, the 15-2 chance was shaken up approaching the final furlong and, with just the riderless Chaldean for company in the closing stages, kept on strongly to hit the line with an impressive three-length buffer back to G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte victor Charyn (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), himself 5 1/2 lengths clear of Doncaster maiden winner Theoryofeverything (GB) (Frankel {GB}).

Brian Meehan, absorbing a first success in the contest, commented, “He is smart and I've always thought so. Things went wrong at Newmarket and he came back lame, but luckily it wasn't serious. We got him right within a couple of weeks and, touch wood, he's been 100 per cent since. I was so disappointed in the Dewhurst, because he was not the finished article and there was so much more to come. Mentally he's always been a calm horse, but Newmarket was only his third run. He has won a Group 2 on good-to-firm and he seems to go on everything. Chaldean was very unfortunate and nobody wants to see that happen to anyone. It is a shame for Andrew and Juddmonte.”

However, Isaac Shelby will not be returning to Newmarket anytime soon, according to the trainer, and is set on a course for ParisLongchamp's May 14 G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches. “He is in the French Guineas, which was always the plan. He didn't go to the [G3] Craven because I was spooked by Newmarket and I don't want to go back there until he's a little older and more mature. It will be the French Guineas and then we'll take it from there.”

Despite an unexpected turn of events for the 5-4 favourite, trainer Andrew Balding reflected in positive tones. “He was fit and well and ready to run a big race, but it was one of those unfortunate things,” he said. “We are just thankful it was a trial, the horse seems to have come back fine and Frankie is fine. It is real bad luck, but it is what it is and we've got two weeks to the [G1 2000] Guineas. The Guineas was always the main aim and that's where we're going. He pulled up pretty quick, but it would have been a big problem if had he gone and done another circuit of the track. He's had a decent workout and probably enjoyed it.” Juddmonte's Barry Mahon added, “It was one of those freak things. The main thing is the horse is okay and the jockey is okay. Frankie said the horse beside him just came over and caught his leg and ripped it out of the stirrup. The horse was a little slow [from stall seven] and the horse on his outside [Streets Of Gold] came across [from stall eight] and caught his leg. No harm done and the horse has had a day out, which was the whole aim of today.”

Pedigree Notes
Isaac Shelby, one of 19 pattern-race winners for his sire (by Dubawi {Ire}), is the third of four foals and one of two winners produced by an unraced half-sister to GII Mac Diarmida H. victor Ramazotti (Honor Grades) and to the dam of dual stakes scorer Vow To Recover (Broken Vow). The April-foaled chestnut is half to an unnamed 2-year-old colt by Al Kazeem (GB). His second dam, the stakes-placed Mine Inning (Mining), is a daughter of Listed Revidere S. second Weed It Out (Clever Trick), herself kin to four pattern-race winners headed by GI American Derby hero Pocket Zipper (Full Pocket). Descendants of Weed It Out also include Listed Debutante S. winner She's My Warrior (Warrior's Reward), Listed Minnesota Derby scorer Thealligatorhunter (Overanalyze), Listed Oak Tree Sprint S. victrix Annie's Candy (Twirling Candy) and the Puerto Rican champion juvenile Wicked Runner (Wicked Strong).

Julian Richmond-Watson and Ralph Beckett tasted Classic success in 2008 with G1 Oaks heroine Look Here (GB) (Hernando {Ger}) and they are once again eyeing a moment in the spotlight after Remarquee (GB) (Kingman {GB}–Regardez {GB}, by Champs Elysees {GB}), who is from the family of Look Here, downed 11 rivals with something to spare in Saturday's G3 Dubai Duty Free S. (Fred Darling S.) at Newbury. Positioned under cover and racing a shade enthusiastically in mid division through the initial fractions of this straight seven-furlong test, the Sept. 29 Salisbury maiden winner and 7-2 chance surged forward into contention at the quarter-mile pole and quickened in impressive fashion under mild urging inside the final furlong to comfortably hold the late rally of Stenton Glider (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) by a neck, despite rider Rob Hornby dropping his whip in the closing stages.

Remarquee's triumph was a fifth in the contest, and first since 2015, for Beckett, who insisted a crack at the May 7 G1 1000 Guineas was now very much on the cards. “It's great, it's everything I'd hoped for and more,” the trainer beamed. “She was green and running away and Rob [Hornby] dropped his stick by the time she was running away from the crowd. Richard Hannon's filly [Magical Sunset] leant on her a bit, so she had Kevin Stott's stick in her face for a couple of strides. She doesn't know very much, but she will know more after today and we will certainly go to Newmarket [for the 1000 Guineas]. I think she is very good and she has got to go there on the back of that. Her mother wanted fast ground and maybe she handles this ground, but I don't see fast ground being a problem.”

Hornby added, “She seems a good mover and she has a high head carriage, which is a bit like Kingman. They tend to be a bit like that, but it doesn't stop her. It is probably what she finds comfortable and she was still running true all the way to the line. She will definitely stay further and, while you don't know until you've tried it, I'm sure she will act well on the course at Newmarket. She is not short of speed and I think a mile will be right for her.”

Pedigree Notes
Remarquee, who becomes the 35th pattern-race winner for her sire (by Invincible Spirit {Ire}), is the fourth of six foals and one of two winners for MGSP Listed Hoppings S. victrix Regardez (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}). The March-foaled homebred bay is kin to the unraced 2-year-old colt Reveal (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and a yearling filly by Study Of Man (Ire). Regardez is kin to the ill-fated G1 Prix Royal-Oak hero Scope (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), stakes-winning G2 Prix de Sandringham third Glance (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and the stakes-placed Compton (GB) (Compton Place {GB}). They are out of a half-sister G1 Oaks heroine Look Here (GB) (Hernando {Fr), herself the dam of Listed Noel Murless S. victrix and G2 Lancashire Oaks third Hereby (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}). Remarquee's fourth dam Derniere Danse (GB) (Gay Mecene), whose descendants include Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial winner Kayah (GB) (Kahyasi {Ire}), is half-sister to G2 Prix Maurice de Gheest hero and MG1SP sire Pursuit of Love (GB) (Groom Dancer) and MGSW G1 Prix Morny runner-up Divine Danse (Fr) (Kris {GB}).

Susan Roy's homebred 4-year-old gelding Grand Alliance (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}–Endless Love {Ire}, by Dubai Destination) was winless in six starts since registering early-season scores at Chelmsford and Donaster last year and, with dual Classic hero Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) failing to fire on seasonal return, stepped forward to notch as shock victory in Saturday's G3 Dubai Duty Free Finest Surprise S. (John Porter S.) at Newbury. Fourth over course and distance in October's G3 St Simon S. when last seen, the 18-1 outsider was patiently ridden from the outset and found a comfortable rhythm off the pace in fifth. Making eyecatching headway on the bridle in the straight, he launched his challenge passing the quarter-mile pole and surged clear, despite drifting towards the far-side rail, under a drive in the closing stages to secure a career high in game fashion. At the line, he was 2 1/4 lengths too good for Farhan (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), who edged Max Vega (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) by a neck for second.

Grand Alliance, who ran 11th in last year's G1 Derby, snatched defeat from the jaws of victory when drifting late in Royal Ascot's G2 King Edward VII and was gelded before running third behind Max Vega in the St Simon last time. “He has done that to a pretty decent field, they were a good bunch and he has done it pretty handily in the end,” said trainer Charlie Fellowes. “I don't think he was doing a huge amount out in front. He was on and off the bridle, but that's him and he has got a lot better than he was last year. He was particularly quirky last year, but he's settled down a lot. It was rattling quick when he threw that race away at Ascot and I think he goes on any ground. He has a [G2] Yorkshire Cup entry, but James [Doyle] said afterwards he wouldn't be jumping to step up further in trip. I think I need to have a sit down and talk to the owner and make a plan.”

Doyle, celebrating his 35th birthday in style, added, “He was on and off the bridle, but that is what he has does and he has always hinted he has been pretty good. He should have won at Royal Ascot last year, but he just hung across the track. He is very versatile ground-wise and he's got such small feet that it's amazing he does go on this type of heavy ground. He does go on fast ground, so hopefully we can have a bit of fun with him. On better ground he could possibly go up to a Yorkshire Cup trip, but on testing ground like it is today, I think this trip is about right.”

Notwithstanding Hurricane Lane's eclipse, the 6-4 favourite eased when beaten on unsuitable going, there was a downbeat air to the epilogue with the news G1 Derby, G1 St Leger and G1 Gold Cup runner-up Mojo Star (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) may have run his final race after finishing fourth. “He came in lame and has gone straight to the vets in Newbury,” revealed trainer Richard Hannon. “He has a bit of a history, so that's why he doesn't run too often. It doesn't look great and that's all we know at the moment. I would think it might be suspensory, but he has such a big heart he's run right to the line and that's why we all love him. He's been a big part of our lives for five years, he is a gentleman and a horse very close to his owner's heart. He is in the best place and he'll be fine. Whether he continues his racing career or not, is probably doubtful. He has given us several great days, it's been a pleasure to have him about and he is a very special horse.”

Pedigree Notes
Grand Alliance, who becomes the ninth black-type winner for his sire (by Galileo {Ire}), is the ninth of 11 live foals and one of four scorers out of an unraced half to the dual stakes-placed Wittgenstein (Ire) (Shamardal). The March-foaled homebred bay is a half-brother to MGSW G1 Vincent O'Brien National S., G1 Prix Jean Prat and G1 Prix de la Foret placegetter Dutch Connection (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}), Listed Radley S. third Dutch Romance (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) and an unnamed 2-year-old filly by Gleneagles (Ire). Their second dam, Listed Montrose Fillies' S. victrix and G3 Prix Saint-Roman runner-up La Vita E Bella (Ire) (Definite Article {GB}), is kin to the dual stakes scorer Bella Tusa (Ire) (Sri Pekan), herself the second dam of stakes-winning G3 Cornwallis S. runner-up Method (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}).

Godolphin's superstar Australian runner Anamoe (Aus) (Street Boss) is one of 30 nominees at the latest entry stage for the G1 Al Shaqab Lockinge S. on Saturday, May 20, Newbury Racecourse revealed on Tuesday.

A nine-time Group 1 winner Down Under, the bay won the G1 George Ryder in mid-March last out, part of a three-race winning streak from seven furlongs to one mile, which began in the G2 Apollo S. in February and continued in the G1 Chipping Norton S. later that month. He drew post eight in Saturday's G1 Queen Elizabeth S.

Newbury's eight-furlong contest also features fellow Godolphin runners Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), and 2022 Lockinge runner-up Real World (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Blue Diamond Stud's G1 Prix de Diane heroine Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}) is among the entries, as is three-time G1 Dubai Turf hero Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). Other top-level scorers set to take part include Angel Bleu (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}), Order Of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}), The Revenant (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), Homeless Songs (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), who runs in the Listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Heritage S. at Leopardstown on Wednesday, Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}), and Sacred (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) are other runners of note in what appears to be a contentious feature.

Keith Ottesen, Clerk of the Course at Newbury Racecourse, said, “It is very exciting and encouraging to see such a strong list of entries for the first older horse Group 1 race of the season. We are pleased to see some of last year's contenders returning for another tilt after chasing home the mighty Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), including runner up Real World and third placed Chindit (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}). It's also great to see the Godolphin owned Anamoe, Australia's best horse at a mile, in there, as well as last season's GI Breeders' Cup Mile winner Modern Games.
