Walshtown Stables' yearling colt by Blue Bresil (Fr) brought a sale-topping €62,000 from Glenvale Stud during the Tattersalls Ireland February National Hunt Sale on Tuesday.

The son of Maryota (Fr) (Martaline {GB}) (lot 113) is a half-brother to G1 Tolworth Novices' Hurdle third Mr Glass (Ire) (Sholokhov {Ire}). Under the second dam is multiple Grade 1-winning hurdler Yanworth (GB) (Norse Dancer {Ire}).

From the same consignment was another Blue Bresil colt (lot 7) which attracted a winning bid of €50,000 from Niall Bleahen. The bay is a half-brother to G1 Ellier Champion Novice Chase winner Feronily (Ire) (Getaway {Ger}), as the duo are out of Vickeeto (Ire) (Old Vic {GB}).

Walk In The Park (Ire)'s son of Fleur d'Ainay (Fr) (Poliglote {GB}) (lot 66) caught the eye of Grange Stud at €43,000. His dam captured a Grade 1 chase in France, and is already responsible for Zurekin (Ire) (Martaline {GB}), a listed winner and third in the G2 Prix La Barka Hurdle.

The one-day sale grossed €1,039,200 for 93 sold from 162 offered (57%). The average was €11,174 (-10%) and the median was €7,000 (-18%).

Tattersalls Ireland's CEO Simon Kerins said, “The February National Hunt Sale marked a satisfactory start to the trade for the beginning of 2024. We would also like to congratulate Walshtown Stables for yet again bringing a quality draft to market.”

One of eight six-figure lots on the day, Oak Grove (Ire) (Soldier Of Fortune {Ire}) (lot 13) took pride of place when selling for £250,000 to Fergal O'Brien Racing during the Tattersalls Cheltenham April Sale on Thursday evening.

O'Brien was buying the relative of Grade 1 winner Voler La Vedette (Ire) (King's Theatre {Ire}) for Chris and Deborah Giles, who already have a half-share in another O'Brien runner, Crambo (GB) (Saddler Maker {Ire}).

“We have no plans as yet,” reported O'Brien of the Rob James Racing-consigned 4-year-old who captured an Oldcastle point-to-point earlier this month. “He needs bit of time and from here will probably go to Jason Maguire's for some R and R through the summer.

“Sally [Randell] and I watched his video and thought he won a very competitive point-to-point–he was the one we came for and we loved him when we saw him.

“We are very grateful for the opportunity to come and buy a horse such as this. He is the most expensive horse we have bought in the ring–usually we buy four for this sort of money!”

The gelding Grand Albert (Ire) (Jet Away {GB}) (lot 27) and the mare Florencethemachine (Ire) (Malinas {Ger}) shared the next most expensive tag at £120,000 apiece. The former was consigned by Virginia Considine and caught the eye of Anthony Bromley of Highflyer Bloodstock. Tom Malone secured the latter from Treehouse Stables. The pair have each won a point-to-point, with the 5-year-old mare taking a Monksgrange affair on debut at the end of March.

The one-day sale concluded with 49 sold of 59 offered (83%) for a gross of £2,969,000. The average was £60,592 (-10%) and the median was £50,000 (-7%).

Matt Prior, Head of Sales at Tattersalls, said, “The Tattersalls Cheltenham April Sale has enjoyed a fabulous spring season on the racecourse through the exploits of Apple Way (Fr) (Diamond Green {Fr}), purchased for just £35,000 at the Cheltenham April Sale last year, winner of last week's G1 Sefton Novices' Hurdle for trainer Lucinda Russell.

“This year has also seen Tattersalls Cheltenham graduates Envoi Allen (Fr) (Muhtathir {GB}), Gerri Colombe (Fr) (Saddler Maker {Ire}), Shishkin (Ire) (Sholokhov {Ire}), Stay Away Fay (Ire) (Shantou), Tahmuras (Fr) (Falco), and Inthepocket (GB) (Blue Bresil {Fr}) all add new Grade 1 wins to their resumes, proving that the Tattersalls Cheltenham sales really are the prime source of top level NH horses in training and point-to-pointers.

“Today's broad buying bench reflected the strong demand for the 'Tattersalls Cheltenham horse' with 49 lots sold at a healthy 83% clearance rate, eight fetching £100,000 and over, a top price of £250,000 and a turnover just shy of £3 million.”

Wildcard Jersey Des Brosses (Fr) (No Risk At All {Fr}) (lot 32) brought a sale-topping bid of £370,000 from Gordon Elliott Racing to lead the way during Thursday's Tattersalls Cheltenham February Sale.

The price was the highest for a 4-year-old since 2019. Second on his debut at Oldtown last weekend to fellow sales horse Jingko Blue (Fr) (Great Pretender {Ire}) (lot 36) who made £225,000 from JP McGrath Bloodstock, Jersey Des Brosses was consigned by Colin Bowe's Milestone Stables.

Elliott, bidding online, said, “He looked the standout horse in the sale, and I'd say a summer's grass is what he wants as he's a horse with plenty of improvement in him.

“He's one we're looking forward to for next year. We'd seen him in Colin's and liked him. We'll have to get him home and get him sold now.”

A pair of winning Walk In The Park (Ire) geldings from Monbeg Stables brought £290,000 and £250,000 apiece, as Mt Fugi Park (Ire) (lot 8) caught the eye of Stroud Coleman Bloodstock on behalf of Jonjo O'Neill Racing, and Highflyer Bloodstock bought Leader In The Park (Ire) (lot 28), respectively.

A total of 40 lots of 52 offered (77%) sold for a gross of £4,298,000, the third highest aggregate ever reached at the sale. The average rose 30% to £107,450 and the median rose by 29% to £77,500.

Matt Prior, Tattersalls Head of Sales, said, “To have six horses fetch over £200,000, 15 sell for over £100,000 and a record-breaking turnover is a fantastic result and shows the continuing desire by owners and trainers to buy the very best NH prospects at the Tattersalls Cheltenham sales.

“A top-price of £370,000 given for the 4-year-old Jersey Des Brosses is a fabulous result for trainer Colin Bowe and owner Walter Connors, who are always such strong supporters of Tattersalls, and it is a great start to this year's trade in 4-year-old point-to-pointers.”

A colt by Walk In The Park (Ire) led the way with a €49,000 final bid at Tuesday's one-day February National Hunt Sale at Fairyhouse. Sold by Walshtown Stables on behalf of breeder Liam Flavin, lot 109, who is out of Be Mine Tonight (Ire), was purchased by pinhooker Dick Frisby.

Consignor Donie Murphy said, “We always thought he was a nice sort, this is the right sale for him as he was a June foal. The mare is three from three and there are a few more from her to run. We had plenty of interest yesterday and were very busy. We are very happy.”

The day's session finished on a similar level to 2022–the median of €8,500 and the average of €12,451 saw a marginal drop, and the turnover of €1,624,500, from a 21-lot leaner catalogue than in 2022.

“The focus today was clearly on quality with strong competition for the better yearlings from a large group of pinhookers who turned out in force at the first sale of the year at Tattersalls Ireland,” said Tattersalls Ireland CEO Simon Kerins.

“Figures held up well with the average dropping ever so slightly to €12,451 and a median of €8,500. The top of the market was strong with 13 yearlings selling for €30,000 or more and those with sought after individuals were well rewarded.”

Topping Thursday's proceedings was lot 506, a dark bay gelding by Stormy River (Fr) named Karisto (Fr) at €30,000. James Doyle of Baltimore Stables signed for him under the D/J Bloodstock banner from the draft of Mocklershill Stables.

A gelding by Affinisea (Ire) (lot 534) was next at €25,000 from the Moyfinn Stud draft. Steven Crawford raised his hand for the relative of the stakes winner and Grade 3-placed Morley Street (Ire) (Deep Run {GB}).

Tattersalls Ireland CEO Simon Kerins said, “What a summer of store sales… it's been spectacular. Finally after two years our sales returned to where they belong on the sales calendar and each one of them told their own hugely successful story. This week's July Store Sale firmly cemented its position in purchasers' diaries and the significant increase witnessed in turnover, average and median justifies the move from an August date.

“All these stats and achievements couldn't be reached if it wasn't for our vendors who supply the goods. It has been simply incredible what we have witnessed at Tattersalls Ireland this summer and it is a true reflection of the superb quality of National Hunt horses being produced by Irish and UK breeders and consignors. We are extremely grateful to our vendors who have entrusted us with their top-class stock and our returns this year only proves that we deliver.

“Likewise, our thanks must also go out to each purchaser who flocked to Fairyhouse and dug deep to fill their stables. There was an extensive range of buyers involved across each sale and at every level. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the team for their hard work and Charles O'Neill and the ITM team for all their support.”

The second edition of the Tattersalls Ireland July Store Sale built upon last year's inaugural sale with increases across the board. Featuring an expanded catalogue, 190 lots sold from 270 offered (70%), up two ticks from 2021. The gross grew by 90% to €2,841,100, with additional increases in both average (€14,953, +43%) and median (€11,750, +47%).

Two lots shared topper honours, with Rathbarry Stud's lot 1A, the second lot through the ring, bringing €65,000 on the bid of Tom Malone and Paul Nicholls. A gelded son of Blue Bresil (Fr) and Grade 2 hurdle winner Jessber's Dream (Ire) (Milan {GB}) who also placed second at the Grade 1 level, the March-foaled 3-year-old is his dam's first foal.

Just a handful of lots from the final store, lot 293 equaled that amount on the bid of Nicky Richards. Consigned by Liss House, the son of Buck's Boum (Fr) and the Early March (GB) mare Implora (Fr) is a half-sister to the Grade 3-placed Desinvolte (Fr) (Early March {GB}).

Third on the buyers' sheets was lot 269. Knocked down to Hugo Merienne for €60,000, the son of Network (Ger) was part of the Wood Hall Stables draft. The dark bay is from the same family as G3 Prix Hypothese Hurdle scorer Dos Santos (Fr) (Smadoun {Fr}).

Tattersalls Ireland CEO Simon Kerins said, “It is fantastic to host the July Store Sale on it's intended date for the first time. The sale has recorded significant gains on last year, sale turnover almost double of 2021's inaugural sale as well as huge rises in average and median. The results fully vindicate the decision to stage this sale in July and the phenomenal footfall seen at Tattersalls Ireland today demonstrates that both Irish and UK purchasers fully support the sale.

“We must thank our vendors for getting behind the idea of a mid-summer sale and allowing us to introduce it to the sales calendar in such a vibrant manner. They have supported the sale with some quality stock and their confidence in the sale and the venue has been rewarded.”

Part II of the July Store Sale commences tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.

Of the 180 lots through the ring, 162 sold for a 90% clearance rate. The average was £31,393 (-1.1%) just down on 2021 and the median was marginally lower at 4% (£22,000).

Leading the way among the pointers and bumper horses that made up the majority of the first session was Porthill (Ire) (Flemensfirth), who brought £250,000 from the buying duo of H. Kirk and Willie Mullins. Consigned by Colin McKeever's Loughanmore Farms, the 4-year-old gelding (lot 420) placed second on debut and is from the family of Grade 1 winner Relegate (Ire) (Flemensfirth).

Of the other six lots to make six figures, the placed Passing Well (Fr) (Coastal Path {GB}) (lot 465) was next at £185,000. From the Leighmoney Stables draft, the gelding caught the eye of Tom Malone and Jamie Snowden.

Rounding out the top three was lot 431, Myretown (Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}). Another consigned by Leighmoney Stables, the winning point-to-pointer and half-brother to Grade 3-placed hurdler A Fine Young Man (Ire) (Snurge) was purchased for £135,000 by Tom Malone and Lucinda Russell.

The second and final day of the Doncaster Spring HIT/PTP Sale will begin at 10 a.m. and feature the Million In Mind Dispersal.

Back after a two-year COVID-19 hiatus, the 2022 Goffs UK Aintree Sale was topped by the winning point-to-pointer Croke Park (Ire) (Walk In The Park {Ire}) (lot 8) at £400,000. A 4-year-old gelding who ran second at Lingstown on debut in March, the Ballyboy Stables-consigned bay was purchased by Gordon Elliot Racing. His half-brother, Etre Francais (Ire) (Anzillero {Ger}), has placed third in a French listed hurdle. This is the family of the graded-winning chaser Oiseau de Nuit (Fr) (Evening World {Fr}).

Second on the buyers' sheet was lot 1, the high class Put The Kettle On (Ire) (Stowaway {GB}), who is the only mare to win the Cheltenham Festival G1 Champion Chase. Offered by Henry De Bromhead's Knockeen Racing, she was purchased by Highflyer Bloodstock on behalf of Simon Davies for £380,000. Broodmare duty is next for the 8-year-old and she will visit Davies's stallion Planteur (Ire) at Chapel Stud.

Deep Cave (Ire) (Court Cave {Ire}) (lot 17) changed hands for £235,000. Part of the Charlestown Racing draft, the 4-year-old gelding caught the eye of Henry De Bromhead. The grandson of listed hurdle winner Soupinette (Fr) (Presenting {GB}) won a maiden point-to-point at Belclare by six lengths at first asking on Mar. 20.

Of the 32 horses catalogued, 31 went through the ring and 27 sold (87%) for a gross of £3,656,000. The new record average was £135,407 (+6%) and the median dipped to £95,000 (-10%). A baker's dozen (13) of lots made six figures, with seven of those reaching £200,000 or more.

Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent commented, “It's great to be back. That was how we marketed this sale in the build-up as we have missed it over the last two years and to see it produce new records on what was a very important return this year is a wonderful feeling. Of the 13 six-figure lots, seven made £200,000 or more, clearly demonstrating the quality that was on offer and the demand for these top-class horses.

“We are in debt to our vendors for their support once again. Aintree is a proven world-class venue and the sale's two-year absence had no impact on their desire to send their best. We would also like to extend our thanks to the Aintree Racecourse executives for their continued partnership and support. Today has been a great day and we are looking forward to our next major NH Sale–the Spring Sale–in Doncaster in May.”

Five mares broke the six-figure mark during the fifth and final day of the Tattersalls Ireland November National Hunt Sale, and Benie des Dieux (Fr) (Great Pretender {Ire}) was undoubtedly the star of the show. Offered by Closutton Stables, the bay went for €350,000 to MV Magnier/Bective Stud. Sold as lot 1253, she is a three-time Grade 1 hurdle winner and was in foal to Walk In The Park (Ire).

Closutton also offered the third- and fourth-dearest lots– lot 1254 and lot 1257, Buildmeupbuttercup (GB) (Sixties Icon {GB}) and Salsaretta (Fr) (Kingsalsa), respectively. The former was snapped up by Jayne McGivern for €165,000 and is a listed winner and Grade 1-placed hurdler in foal to the popular Crystal Ocean (GB). Salsaretta, a Grade 2 winning-chaser entered the ring carrying to Blue Bresil (Fr), and went to Seamar Bloodstock Ltd.

Magic of Light (Ire) (Flemensfirth) (lot 1251) was second at the end-of-day standings at €185,000 and caught the eye of Coolmara Stables. The Baroda Stud draft member ran out a dual winner of the G2 Warfield Mares' Hurdle, as well as the G2 Glencarraig Lady Mares H. Chase. She is a half-sister to Grade 1 hurdler Pingshou (Ire) (Definite Article {GB}) and sold in foal to young sire Crystal Ocean (GB).

At the conclusion of the sale, 857 lots sold of 1,182 (73%) offered for an aggregate of €15,758,100. The average dropped three points to €18,388 and the median was also marginally down to €12,500 (-4%). Thursday's trade ended with 135 sold and a gross of €2,420,250. The average was €17,928 and the median was €7,000.

Commenting on the conclusion of the November NH Sale, Tattersalls Ireland CEO Simon Kerins said, “What an amazing couple of days we have witnessed at Tattersalls Ireland as the November NH Sale reached unprecedented heights with a trade that was simply extraordinary. The November NH Sale continues to be such a strong hallmark sale for breeders and the 2021 renewal is one that only adds to the story in a hugely positive way. The sale kicked off with the highest turnover for a yearling session since 2015, setting the tone for a week of tremendous highs that saw records continue to fall with the turnover, average and median all making huge gains on the previous decade.

“Our foal session set records for a four-day sale and to break the €5,000,000 barrier on Tuesday was remarkable. The sale was a superb representation of the cream of the 2021 foal crop with so many leading breeders continuing to sell their best in November at Tattersalls Ireland.

“The Breeding Stock Sale continued the trend with top prices of €350,000, €185,000, and €165,000 to buyers from France, Ireland and UK illustrating the enduring appeal for the best NH broodmares, and they were the highlights of another incredibly strong renewal of our mare and filly sale with strong trade which enjoyed a record top lot.

“On behalf of all the team at Tattersalls Ireland, I extend our appreciation to the vendors for giving us the opportunity to promote their top-class yearlings, foals and breeding stock and to each and every one of our buyers.”
