Successful owner/breeder Lord Jacob Rothschild, who found Group 1 riches as a co-owner with Nathaniel (Ire) among others, has passed away at the age of 87 earlier this week, according to multiple reports.

The fourth Baron Rothschild, OM, was prominent in both banking and finance, and also was active on the art scene. The chairman of the trustees of the National Gallery from 1985 to 1991, he operated his bloodstock interests out of Waddesdon Stud in Buckinghamshire with his late wife Serena. Later appointed the chairman of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, Rothschild partnered with the National Trust and turned Waddesdon Manor into a historical landmark open to the public housing an extensive art collection.

Many luminaries of the turf have carried the navy and yellow silks to glory, including Channel (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}), who won the 2019 G1 Prix de Diane and 2014 G1 Pretty Polly S. victress Thistle Bird (GB) (Selkirk). In Nathaniel's case, his dam, G3 Musidora S. heroine Magnificient Style (Silver Hawk), was purchased privately after delivering six stakes winners. During her time at stud for Rothschild, she left both the now-Newsells Park Stud-based Group 1 sire Nathaniel, who won the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S., as well as the G1 Eclipse S. and Great Heavens (GB) (Galileo {Ire}). The last-named mare won the G1 Irish Oaks. Pounced (Rahy) also represented Rothschild when taking the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf in 2009.

Rothschild was pre-deceased by his wife, who died in 2019. He is survived by his son Nathaniel, who is now the fifth Baron Rothschild, and three daughters–Hannah, Beth, and Emily and their families.

The 999th Great British Bonus was paid to the connections of Miss Bielsa (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) after she won on debut in a maiden fillies' race on Jan. 26. A £50,000gns Tattersalls Book 2 alum, the Alan Byrne-owned Miss Bielsa picked up a £20,000 bonus at Wolverhampton.

The Simon and Ed Crisford trainee is a half-sister to the very first GBB winner, Pelekai (GB) (Kodiac {GB}), who won £10,000 on debut, and to Golden Mayflower (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}), who earned £20,000, also in her first appearance. The trio are out of Pelerin (Ire) (Shamardal), a multiple listed winner. The chestnut is the 763rd filly to have secured at least one GBB bonus, with 166 multiple GBB bonus winners. Byrne is one of 562 owners who have seen success with GBB, while her breeder, Newsells Park Stud, is one of 454 who have bred a winning filly.

Philip Newton, the Chairman of the TBA, which runs the scheme, said, “At a superficial level, GBB is supporting the entire industry with immediate financial rewards, but it's doing so much more than that: it's encouraging racing in Britain; it's encouraging more fillies to be tested on the track; it's incentivising the use of British-based stallions; it's creating a demand and increasing the value of British-bred fillies at the sales; it's doing so much and exceeding expectations. It is showing that well thought out and carefully managed incentives can–and do–work.”

Since the scheme's launch, the value of British-bred fillies at sales has increased 16.3%; 13.4% for Flat fillies and 26.5% for NH fillies, according to a study by PWC.

He added, “We're truly grateful to the Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) for its unwavering support of the Great British Bonus. The HBLB not only provides £3.5 million in annual funding to the programme, but also plays a vital role in its management through its representatives on the GBB Management Group. Its continued partnership is instrumental in ensuring the longevity and effectiveness of the scheme.”

The deadline to register 2022 Flat-bred fillies for stage 3 is Feb. 28, 2024. For more information on the programme and to register a filly, please visit the GBB website.

The market demand for National Hunt foals remains strong, as the third session concluded on Tuesday with a colt by Walk In The Park (Ire) bringing €100,000 from Gerry Aherne and Charles Shanahan.

Sold as lot 509 from the consignment of Oliver Loughlin, the bay is out of Posh Trish (Ire) (Stowaway {GB}), a listed winner. Posh Trish was originally sold by Loughlin for €1,200 at the 2013 November NH Sale. He is one of nine foals to sell north of €80,000 over the sale so far, with only four achieving that milestone over the whole sale in 2022.

“As soon as this colt was born I thought I might hit the jackpot as he has looked a star from the start,” said Loughlin. “He is an image of her, a baby of her.”

He added of Walk In The Park as the second mate of Posh Trish, who he picked back up for €118,000 out of the 2020 November National Hunt Sale, “He is a good stallion, she was a good mare and the plan is always to bred the best to the best.”

“For us he is the best foal here,” said Aherne. “We probably will race him, but not yet decided for sure. The mare was very good and is very good-looking. Oliver is a good breeder and we have been lucky with him before.”

A colt by Kapgarde (Fr) (lot 643) from Clonbonny Stud attracted a winning bid of €92,000 from Jamie Codd later in the day. The first foal of the winning hurdler Cushuish (GB) (Yeats {Ire}), the colt's second dam is Grade 2-winning chaser My Petra (GB) (Midnight Legend {GB}). His dam is also a half-sister to Grade 1 hurdler My Drogo (GB) (Milan {GB}).

“We'll get him home before we make a plan, but he has all the options,” said Codd. “He could go racing, or he could end up coming back here to the Derby Sale. We had to stretch to get him, but he's a lovely horse and is the only one by the sire in the sale.”

Rounding out the top three was a €90,000 son of Nathaniel (Ire) (lot 722) from Peel Hall Stables. NBB Racing and Joey Logan picked up the third foal of Grade 2 Cheltenham winner Limini (Ire) (Pentre Celebre). Limini was also placed four times at the highest level over jumps.

“The foal is initially going stay in Ireland with Joey but will go to France as a racing prospect–hopefully he will make up into a good juvenile hurdler,” said NBB Racing's Nicolas Bertran de Balanda. “He is very racy and correct.”

At the end of day three, 173 lots of 234 offered (74%) sold for a gross of €4,283,500. The average stayed flat at €24,760, while the median rose 5% to €21,000.

The fourth session, containing National Hunt-bred foals, will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

A colt by Blue Bresil (Fr) brought a sale-topping £90,000 from Richard Frisby during the first edition of the Goffs British NH Breeders' Showcase on Friday. It is a new record for a National Hunt foal sold at public auction.

Consigned by Mill House Stud as lot 42, the bay is out of Scorpio Queen (Ire) (Scorpion {Ire}), a half-sister to two-time G1 Leinster National H. Chase winner Pairofbrowneyes (Ire) (Luso {GB}).

“I never thought he'd make that much,” said Mill House's Juliet Minton. “He had a £40,000 reserve, and I thought he might make £60,000, but I never dreamt of £90,000.

“He'd be right up there with the best we've ever consigned. It was clear as soon as he was born that he was a lovely individual, and he's continued to improve ever since. He's very laid back and has a lovely temperament generally.

Colts by Saint Des Saints (Fr) (lot 24) and Golden Horn (GB) (lot 65) brought £65,000 and £60,000. The former, from Yeo Barton Bloodstock and out of a half-sister to Grade 3 chase winner Eva's Oskar (Ire) (Shirocco {Ger}), went to Coolmara Stables, Ltd.

“He's a beautiful animal, a lovely size and with good breeding,” reported Coolmara's Kieran Mariga. “He's been bought to pinhook and he'll be re-offered as a 3-year-old.”

Tally-Ho Stud bought the latter from Peel Bloodstock. The colt is related to Grade 2 hurdler Akilak (Ire) (Charnwood Forest {Ire}), who was third in two Grade 1s.

“He's a lovely foal and the one we really wanted,” said Tally-Ho's Henry O'Callaghan. “Golden Horn has a lot in his favour for jumps breeding, so should work, and this colt was well bred and very well prepared by the breeders. Fair play to them.”

The day's highest priced filly was by Nathaniel (Ire) (lot 44) and she made £50,000 on the bid of BLF Farm. Her dam was placed three times at the graded level and is a half-sister to top chaser Allaho (Fr) (No Risk At All {Fr}).

Of the 83 offered, 65 sold for a gross of £1,277,500. The average reached £19,654 and the median was £15,000.

Goffs UK managing director Tim Kent said, “Firstly, we would like to thank all of today's vendors for supporting this new venture. We asked the British NH Breeders to get behind this new initiative and we were overwhelmed by the response, but we still had to prove that this concept would work, so to achieve these results and break a new record is an incredible result for Goffs and for British NH Breeders.

“Yesterday's show and social evening provided the perfect platform to introduce the sale and celebrate the Best of British and we would like to thank the judges whilst congratulating Jackie Chugg and Sally Aston on winning the Richard Aston Colts' Class and Robert Chugg Fillies' Class respectively.

“We have welcomed a huge number of people to Doncaster over the last two days, with many vendors commenting that no one is missing, and that has created a solid market which has produced some wonderful results, in particular Mill House Stud's Blue Bresil colt which set a new British record for a NH foal when selling to Richard Frisby for £90,000.

“New ventures always come with a degree of risk and, once again, we would like to extend a huge thanks to all our clients who made this such a success whilst we look forward to reviewing the sale before building again in 2024. Meanwhile, we will be back on the road to discuss our January Sale with vendors over the coming weeks whilst we look forward to seeing everyone at the Goffs December Sale on 11-14 December.”

Derby hero Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) has been withdrawn from Wednesday's G1 Juddmonte International after injuring himself during a workout on Sunday morning, according to owner Saeed Suhail's racing manager Bruce Raymond.

“[He] pulled up lame after breezing this morning; [he's] being assessed at [the] equine hospital, [his] career [is] in balance,” Raymond told racing broadcaster Nick Luck on Sunday.

A winner at first asking at two, the Sir Michael Stoute trainee swept the G2 Dante S. over the Knavesmire last May and won the Derby by 2 1/2 lengths that June. An ankle injury kept the son of Desert Berry (GB) (Green Desert) away from the races for almost a year until his second-place finish in the G3 Brigadier Gerard S. at Sandown on May 25. He was similarly on course for Royal Ascot but sustained a setback. After recovering, the G1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth S. was his next target, but Desert Crown contracted a leg infection which ruled him out of that Ascot showpiece.

Dual Group 1 winner Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), who won the Derby and King George in 2022, emerged from his Wednesday gallop in good order and is on target for the G1 Juddmonte International on Aug. 2.

“Desert Crown worked this morning, he worked nicely and everybody was happy with him,” said Bruce Raymond, racing manager to owner Saeed Suhail. “He's not a great worker, as has been stated before, but everyone was very happy with him this morning and everything went as well as expected.”

The Sir Michael Stoute trainee was due to run in the G1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot, but was forced to miss the race due to a leg infection. Missing since last year's King George with an ankle injury, the 4-year-old finished second to subsequent King George hero Hukum (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in the G3 Brigadier Gerard S. on May 25.

Added Raymond of the work, “William [Buick] didn't ride him. Ryan Moore rode him this morning. He's ridden him a lot of times at home and Sir Michael just sometimes likes a different opinion.

“One thing I can definitely tell you is this horse needed it badly at Sandown, it wasn't said at the time but Michael was quite surprised how much he was blowing afterwards. He had worked on the grass but nowhere near as much as we would have liked as it kept on pouring down.

“We're looking forward to next week. He's got to go somewhere and when you are in his class, there are only certain races you can run in.”

Saturday was all about “Mr Goodwood” as Tom Marquand again led his weighing room comrades a merry dance on the G2 Qatar Lillie Langtry S. shock winner Sumo Sam (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}).

As he had on Tuesday's brilliant G1 Goodwood Cup hero Quickthorn (GB) by the same sire, the meeting's leading rider made all on Ben and Sir Martyn Arbib's homebred 3-year-old on ground turned heavy by ever-worsening conditions. Far from caving in with two furlongs remaining, the Paul and Oliver Cole-trained 25-1 shot whose previous best was a third in Newmarket's Listed Pretty Polly S. continued to pile it on. At the end of the mile-and-three-quarter feature, she had won with relish by 8 1/2 lengths from River Of Stars (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in an exhibition of power in testing ground.

Oliver Cole said of the winner, who had also been third behind Al Asifah (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in the Listed Agnes Keyser Fillies' S. here in June, was rewarding the efforts of the Whatcombe team having become renowned as a slow-starter. “Sumo Sam has always been a very good filly,” Oliver Cole said. “We have done a lot of stalls work with her since her last run. In her last two races, she has been left and that hasn't been helpful. Full credit to the team at home and thanks very much to the guys at the stalls who are the unsung heroes. Also to the boys who have ridden her in the stalls at home, because I know I wouldn't ride her.”

Ralph Beckett, who was winning his first Qatar Goodwood Festival training title, said of River Of Stars, “She stumbled coming out of the stalls, but I'm not sure it made any difference as she was always scrambling on that ground. She has a German dam side to her pedigree, but I have always felt that she is a good, fast-ground filly. I would say the [G2] Park Hill [at Doncaster] next, or something like that. She didn't run very well in it last year but she is a hardier, more finished article this time.”

Pedigree Notes

Sumo Sam is the first foal out of the unraced Seaduced (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) who is a half to the owner-breeders' G3 Legacy Cup winner and G1 Pretty Polly S. runner-up Stay Alert (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and her Listed Gillies' S.-winning full-sister Star Rock (GB) who was also runner-up in the G2 T. Von Zastrow Stutenpreis and third in this race. Their dam is the G2 Park Hill S. runner-up and G2 Lancashire Oaks third Starfala (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), one of a trio of black-type performers out of the listed scorer and G3 Prix Cleopatre-placed Farfala (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}). They include the Listed Zetland S. winner and stakes producer Under The Rainbow (GB) (Fantastic Light) who was runner-up in the G2 Lancashire Oaks. Also related to Linamix's G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud hero Fragrant Mix (Ire) and the G1 Prix Jean Romanet heroine Alpine Rose (Fr), Seaduced has yearling colt by Golden Horn (GB).

Maybe the fact that it is so demanding means that it can only be a once-a-year thing, but Lady Blyth's Quickthorn (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}–Daffydowndilly {GB}, by Oasis Dream {GB}) is a joy to behold when he delivers his runaway train impression and Goodwood's gathering had a full two miles to appreciate it again on Tuesday as he turned the G1 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup into a one-horse show.

As he had last August when issuing a 14-length beating to Coltrane (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) in York's G2 Lonsdale Cup over this two-mile trip, the Hughie Morrison-trained Secretariat of the stayers was allowed to stride on at the pace he is comfortable at by Tom Marquand but which is simply too quick for the rest of this division's leading protagonists.

Turning for home, the yawning gap was still too sizeable for any to bridge and by the time the 16-1 shot hit the line there was still six lengths back to the nearest in the pursuing blanket. That turned out to be Emily Dickinson (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who denied Coltrane the silver medal by a short head, with the G1 Gold Cup-winning 2-1 favourite Courage Mon Ami (GB) (Frankel {GB}) only sixth in a race that will be cherished for many years for the sheer audacity of the winning performance.

“He's a fun horse to ride,” Marquand said. “There's no masterplan with him. Down at the gates Frankie looked across and laughed and said 'are you going to drop in?' He goes out wearing his heart on his sleeve and everybody knows what he's going to do and they still can't stop him. It is testament to how good he is. He's had some great days, but he deserved a Group 1 and it would have felt wrong if he had never got one.”

By the time Quickthorn had demolished the opposition in the Lonsdale Cup last August, he was on a three-timer having also garnered the G3 Henry II S. at Sandown and ParisLongchamp's G2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil. As if that effort took him past his limit, his following three outings which included a disappointing no-show in the G1 Prix du Cadran had seen his stock fall and that York tour de force seem an aberration. It all came back together again as he returned to the Knavesmire for the 14-furlong Listed Grand Cup last time, as he was able to turn back the subsequent G2 Princess of Wales's S. winner Israr (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) and while there was much upside to that form this was a deep Goodwood Cup and most were happy to overlook him.

What was remarkable about this performance was that Quickthorn actually ran at the right tempo throughout having shown alacrity on this tricky circuit to gain a huge four-second gap or just over 20 lengths on everything after the first mile. Given a breather out in isolation from seven to five out, he was asked to go again from there and instead of caving in continued to churn out sectionals strong enough to ensure the margin never approached being cut back. The gap to Coltrane et al was 15 lengths three furlongs from home and while he was almost 2 1/2 seconds slower than Emily Dickinson from there to the line, she was too far back to make a genuine difference.

Quickthorn's final three-furlong percentage was an almost bang-on 101.45%, while Emily Dickinson was at 108.63%, so that means that the leader was ridden ideally and the filly was given too much to do along with the next four home who finished in a tight bunch. Perhaps the main reason why such class horses got so far adrift was the relatively slow pace set by Oisin Murphy as he lead the peloton, determined not to provide Frankie with a target as he had at Royal Ascot. The others trusted Murphy's judgement and ultimately paid for it.

On the back of some remarkable staying performances in the last 12 months, from the Cadran win of Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) to the Northumberland Plate success of Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}) and all the parts played by the scene's other main actors Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) and Coltrane, this was something else. Marquand's ride will be recalled for some time to come and he was quick to pardon those in behind in the aftermath.

“It's easy to say in hindsight, but I wouldn't be putting down other riders in behind as you would be doing them a disservice–I would be giving this lad credit for going such a gallop,” he explained. “If I was in behind I would have done the same. He's a relentless galloper and you think 'no horse can keep that up' but it's a case of going and finding a rhythm and wherever that puts you, it puts you. Obviously we showed that in the Lonsdale Cup last year and it just feels like the right way to ride him.”

Hughie Morrison said, “I was amazed he was that price, but we don't mind. We were pretty bullish today and no one was prepared to be the chaser, but had they been they would have probably not got there and then finished out the back. He's got a huge stride and I'd love to do an analysis on that, as it would be something for posterity I think, and he's quite quick. When you cover that kind of ground, it's psychologically hard work for the others to get there.”

“It's great to see that York last year wasn't a fluke and the Lonsdale was like a Group 1, but the opposition didn't turn up,” his trainer added. “I'm sure we would have dealt with Stradivarius and Trueshan there as we dealt with the others today and he was as straight as a die at the end–you wondered if something had come to him he would have picked up again. He's quite hard on himself at home–every other horse has to do about three strides for his one–and so probably in the autumn, he seems to go over the top. That's fair enough after you see what he does on days like today, so we're probably quite nervous about going into the autumn with him again. He's in the Lonsdale again and he'll have a penalty this year, he's got an entry in Ireland [in the G1 Irish St Leger].”

Paying tribute to the owner-breeders, Morrison concluded, “It is fantastic for James and Pam [Blyth], who bred him and it's fantastic to see they kept him and owned him. They have been very patient with him and we've got our rewards. We don't have a huge amount of horses, 50 or 60, and it's fantastic to train these homebreds and to be able to bring them on so they reach their zenith at the right sort of age. Lady Blyth has bred a Grade 1 winner over jumps and a Group 1 winner now–not many people have done that.”

Oisin Murphy saw the damage was done early on as he pondered the ride on Coltrane, who had similarly never got anywhere near the winner at York last year. “It was obvious in the first furlong that Lone Eagle, Tashkhan and Broome–those horses you'd expect to go forward–weren't going forward, so I changed my plan and decided to let Coltrane roll down to the first turn,” he explained. “I thought Tom was very clever around those sharp bends, he allowed Quickthorn to really slip on. You can only go so fast around those turns, because they are quite sharp and by the time we turned to go back uphill, he had a sizeable advantage.”

“He had to use up a fair bit of energy, albeit basically going downhill, to get away from us but often you pay for that sort of ride and in the last furlong I wasn't sure if he would stop completely. I probably cost myself second position by trying to close the gap from three down. Quickthorn has a massive pair of lungs and covers so much ground, so he has enough pace to get away from a high-class field. I was aware of what could happen and he was still able to do it.”

Pedigree Notes

Lord and Lady Blyth's Daffydowndilly, who also has the improving 4-year-old gelding City Streak (GB) (Cityscape {GB}) with Andrew Balding who took a valuable 12-furlong handicap at Ascot on Friday, is a daughter of Art Eyes (Halling) who captured the Listed Noel Murless S. and was second in this meeting's Lillie Langtry S. when it was staged as a Group 3. From an old Aga Khan family, she has the yearling filly Tardaff (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) and a colt foal Scarlet Legend (GB) who is a full-brother to Quickthorn.
