by Jessica Martini, Christie DeBernardis & Christina Bossinakis

LEXINGTON, KY – The Fasig-Tipton November Sale, which surpassed the $100-million mark in gross sales for the first time in its history last year, went past that milestone for the second time Sunday when 169 horses sold for $101,214,000.

“Another remarkable November sale just concluded here at Fasig-Tipton,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “Last year, we surpassed $100,000,000 in gross for the first time–that was kind of one of those goals that we dreamt about, but didn't think it was realistic–and we were fortunate enough to do it last year and we did it again this year. It's kind of a magical night. The excitement and the energy was palpalable and it's a great environment to transact business and to sell some really quality horses.”

The sale average of $598,899 dipped 13.9% from the 2021 figure of $695,966, while the median of $250,000 fell 16.7% from a year ago. With 71 horses reported not sold, the buy-back rate was 29.6%. It was 23.2% last year.

When the final hip went through the ring, 31 horses had sold for seven figures, with champion Gamine (Into Mischief) leading the way when selling to Coolmore's M.V. Magnier for $7 million. The Coolmore team followed up on its big weekend of three Breeders' Cup winners purchasing four million-dollar mares for $17.9 million.

Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm nearly kept pace with the Irish operation, purchasing out partners to wholly acquire GI Kentucky Oaks winner Shedaresthedevil (Daredevil), as well as the $2.9 million Wicked Whisper (Liam's Map) in foal to Curlin.

Despite facing a less-than-favorable exchange rate this year, Japanese buyers were out in force at Fasig-Tipton Sunday, with Emmanuel De Seroux making two six-figure acquisitions, including the $4-million purchase of GI Breeders' Cup Distaff runner-up Blue Stripe (Arg) (Equal Stripes {Arg}), on behalf of Grand Farm. Katsumi Yoshida purchased five mares for $8.05 million, led by the $2.1-million Kalypso (Brody's Cause).

“The thing that was encouraging tonight–just like last year–was the breadth of participation,” said Browning. “We had strong, strong participation from our friends from Japan. We had strong participation from our domestic buyers. We had strong international participation really throughout. The Europeans were active. And it was nice to see our friends from Australia being back and being active in the marketplace. Our industry has become more international in nature and that was reflected in the activity that took place on the sales grounds today.”

Gamine Offers Explosive Finale to Fasig Tipton November

Having done very little wrong throughout a near-perfect racing career, Gamine (Into Mischief) continued to exert her dominance over her contemporaries in the sales ring Sunday, headlining Fasig-Tipton's November Sale with a session-topping $7-million final bid from Coolmore's M V Magnier. Offered in foal to Quality Road, the 2020 champion female sprinter was consigned by John Sikura's Hill 'n' Dale on behalf of Michael Lund Peterson.

“She is just so unique,” said Sikura. “She has the right pedigree, she had freaky ability. If you look at her physically, she is a stud horse. A beautiful face and a big, long beautiful body. She is just a queen.”

He added, “High-end Buyers, like the Coolmore team, they want the very best. They have to feel moved, and that it is a unique opportunity and if they don't buy her, that they missed something.”

A $220,000 KEESEP yearling purchase, Gamine flourished into a $1.8 million juvenile purchase at Fasig-Tipton in Timonium in May. The winner of five of six starts at three, including the GI Acorn, GI Test S. and GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, Gamine added four more wins in 2021–all at the graded level–highlighted by the GI Ballerina and GI Derby City Distaff S.

“That was a very good price for her, but at the end of the day, she was an absolute champion,” said Magnier, who had a busy night. Magnier was listed as the buyer on four mares–for gross expenditures of $17.9 million–Sunday.

“She was an absolute freak on the track,” he continued. “The guys were very keen to get her. She has been fantastic for Michael Lund Peterson and well done to him. In fairness, we don't see much better than her. Let's hope she has a nice foal.”

According to Magnier, she will remain in the U.S. to be bred.

“The way Justify is going right now, there is a good chance she will go to him.”

Asked whether having such a strong showing during this weekend's Breeders' Cup, registering three victories over the course of the two-day championships, played a role in the strength of the operation's buying efforts at Fasig Sunday, Magnier said with a laugh, “Well, it definitely helped.”

“All of our guys are in it for the love of racing and they want to win Breeders' Cup races. Hopefully, she will breed one for them.”

And the weekend's activity both in the sale's ring and on the racetrack highlighted many Coolmore-based sires, both bourgeoning and established.

“American Pharoah has had four Grade I winners this year and Justify is doing things that no one would have expected him to do. Uncle Mo and Munnings have been strong and the young horses are doing very well too. It only happens because there are breeders that support us.” @CBossTDN

Pope Makes a Deal for the Devil

A year ago, Mandy Pope teamed with Staton Flurry and Sheikh Fahad's Qatar Racing to purchase GI Kentucky Oaks winner Shedaresthedevil (Daredevil) (hip 233) for $5 million. While her partners were hoping to race, Pope always had her eye on adding the mare to her broodmare band and the breeder paid the same price again to buy out her partners Sunday at Fasig-Tipton.

“I was buying the partners out and she is going to the breeding shed,” Pope said after signing the ticket on the 5-year-old. “That's why I bought her last year, but we decided to go racing for one more year.”

Shedaresthedevil is out of Starship Warpspeed (Congrats) and is half-sister to graded placed Mojovation (Quality Road). Before going through the Fasig-Tipton sales ring a year ago, she won the Oaks, as well as the GI Clement L. Hirsch S. and GI La Troienne S. for Staton Flurry's Flurry Racing Stables.

For the partnership, the bay mare added a win in the GII Fleur de Lis S., as well as third-place efforts in this year's Clement Hirsch and GII Azeri S. and a runner-up finish in the La Troienne S.

Shedaresthedevil was consigned by Hunter Valley Farm, which also advised Sheikh Fahad on the purchase of Saturday's GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint winner Caravel (Mizzen Mast), who was purchased for $500,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton November sale and who is expected to go through the ring Monday at Keeneland.

“No, to be honest,” Hunter Valley's Adrian Regan admitted when asked about the result. “We thought she wouldn't make as much as last year. But it's just fantastic and we're delighted she's staying in the country. I have to thank Mandy for buying her. Both myself and Fergus [Galvin] say she is the classiest mare we've ever been around.”

Of the decision to continue racing the mare in 2022, Regan said, “[Trainer] Brad [Cox] still thought there was plenty left in her and there was. Her X-ray report after all her runs, what is it 21 starts, came back perfect. That will tell you what a tough and sound a mare she is. At the end of the day, Mandy got a lovely mare. We hate seeing her leave the farm, but we are grateful she is staying in the country.”

As for mating plans for Shedaresthedevil, Pope said, “We have a couple of stallions in mind, but we will have to see who else is going to retire. She'll probably going to Gun Runner or Flightline or one of the top stallions.”

By the end of Sunday's auction, Pope had signed for two mares, going to $2.9 million for Wicked Whisper (Liam's Map) (hip 253), and a $575,000 weanling half-brother by Authentic (hip 125) to Cyberknife. @JessMartiniTDN

Campanelle A Hot Commodity at Fasig

Group 1 winner Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) (Hip 272) was in high demand, as expected, at Fasig Sunday, summoning a whopping $5 million from Coolmore's M.V. Magnier.

“She was a very nice yearling,” said Magnier. “Her breeder has always liked her, even when she was a foal and a yearling. She is a nice filly. She is very fast. She has done great for Barbara Banke and we look forward to breeding her.”

As for what's next, Magnier said, “We might breed her here and then bring her home [to Ireland]. We have a couple of ideas in mind. We could breed her to Justify or bring her back to No Nay Never. There are plenty of options.”

Ben McElroy went across the pond to secure some European-bred fillies on behalf of Stonestreet's Barbara Banke with the goal of racing both here and in Europe with Wesley Ward. A 190,000gns TATOCT acquisition, the bay opened her account with a trio of victories, including the 2020 G2 Queen Mary S. at Royal Ascot and that year's G1 Prix Morny at Deauville.

She crossed the line a head short in her next trip to the royal meeting for the G1 Commonwealth Cup, but was promoted to first via DQ. Campanelle won twice in 2022, taking the Giant's Causeway S. in April and the GIII Kentucky Downs Ladies Sprint S. Sept. 10. The 4-year-old closed her career with a troubled seventh in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint Saturday in Lexington and retires with a record of 11-6-0-2 and earnings over $1.05 million.

Campanelle is out of SW Janina (Namid) and her second dam is GSW Lady Dominatrix (Danehill Dancer). —@CDeBernardisTDN

Uncle Mo Filly Tops Weanlings at Fasig-Tipton November

Well into Sunday's session of the Fasig-Tipton November sale, a weanling by Uncle Mo provided fireworks when bringing a $1.35 million final bid. Following a rapid fire volleys, which was precipitated by the eventual underbidder Legion Bloodstock, Paramount Sale's Gabriel Duignan signed for Hip 128, a filly out of multiple Grade I winner Bellafina (Quality Road). The Feb. 11 foal was consigned by Eaton Sales, agent.

“She is just a beautiful filly,” said Duignan, who said he was signing on behalf of a partnership. “She is by Uncle Mo and out of a hell of a mare. She is just drop dead gorgeous. It's as good as it gets. She also seems to be like the good Uncle Mos. You get them really pretty.”

Regarding the final price, he added, “I thought she'd bring about a million. It's just where it is now for the good ones.”

He continued, “I think the market is strong here. It's been strong all year, especially for quality.”

Equally high on the filly was Eaton Sales' Reiley McDonald. “Any time you get a million or more for a weanling, you're doing well.”

Outlining her allure, he said, “In this case, the filly was exquisite. She looked exactly like her mother. With the long neck and the huge shoulder-depth and length and big hip. So I wasn't surprised at the price. It's a lot of money, but I would say she was worth every penny of that and maybe more.”

He added, “She was a good size, but not too big. And she had all the same traits that her mother had. She had a massive shoulder with great angle. Great, huge depth and a long back. She looks like she's equipped to carry the speed and the long back to carry the distance. Those don't come along too often.”

Bellafina, an $800,000 Fasig-Tipton Florida juvenile purchase by Kaleem Shah, showed her ability early, graduating in her second career start in the GII Sorrento S. before adding victories in the GI Del Mar Debutante S. and GI Chandelier S. Fourth in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, she returned at three to annex the GII Santa Ynez S., GII Las Virgenes S. and the GI Santa Anita Oaks. Coolmore bought a stake in the filly following a runner-up finish in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint that season, and she filled the same position again in the GI La Brea S. She added a win in the GIII Desert Stormer S. at four before retiring with seven wins from 18 starts and earnings in excess of $1.6 million.

“She is a gorgeous filly and obviously she is very well bred,” said Shah. “I'm in partnership on these horses, so it's a practical decision to sell them. But I'll admit, I do have seller's remorse on this filly. She is a gorgeous filly and I wish I had kept her. I hope she'll do well for herself and for the new owners.”

Later in the session, Bellafina sold to Coolmore for $4 million.

–@CBossTDN

Coolmore Comes Back for Bellafina

After going to $1.35 million to buy out partner Kaleem Shah for the first foal out of Bellafina (Quality Road) earlier in the session, the Coolmore team was back in action to acquire the mare herself (hip 264) for $4 million from the Eaton Sales consignment. The 6-year-old mare, who was purchased by Shah for $800,000 at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale, won the won the 2018 GI Chandelier S. and GI Del Mar Debutante S. and came back in 2019 to win the GI Santa Anita Oaks. She sold Sunday in foal to 2020 GI Belmont S. and GI Travers S. winner Tiz the Law.

“We raced in her partnership with Kaleem,” said Coolmore's M.V. Magnier. “She's a lovely filly. She's very well bred and she's in foal to Tiz the Law, who was an exceptional racehorse. It was just unfortunate that it was the COVID year because he probably would have won the GI Kentucky Derby if it was run in May.”

Buying out the same partnership, the Coolmore team went to $1.9 million to acquire multiple Grade I-placed Donna Veloce (Uncle Mo), also in foal to Tiz the Law. Shah, who acquired Donna Veloce for $800,000 at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale, purchased the mare's first foal, a weanling filly by Justify (hip 159), for $400,000 earlier in the session. @JessMartiniTDN

Grand Farm Secures Distaff Runner-Up

Just one day after almost pulling off a major upset across town in the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff, Blue Stripe (Arg) (Equal Stripes) (Hip 316) was in the spotlight once again, bringing $4 million from Japan's Grand Farm with Emmanuel de Seroux acting as agent.

“She almost won the race,” de Seroux said. “She is a super filly and she is beautiful. On top of that, we love Argentine mares. They do very well in Japan.”

When asked if she will race or retire to the breeding shed, he said, “We will see. There is a good chance she will be bred.”

A four-time winner in her native land including a Group 1, Blue Stripe made her first American appearance in last year's Distaff, finishing a well-beaten seventh. Capturing the GII Santa Margarita S. in her seasonal bow, the bay was a close second in the GII Santa Maria S. in June and won the GI Clement L. Hirsch S. at Del Mar Aug. 6. Given a breather, Blue Stripe came within a nose of soon-to-be two-time champion Malathaat (Curlin) at odds of 24-1 in Saturday's Distaff, earning a 102 Beyer Speed Figure.

Out of Argentinian MGSW Blues For Sale (Arg) (Not for Sale), Blue Stripes is a half to 2019 Distaff winner Blue Prize (Arg) (Pure Prize), who topped that year's renewal of this auction at $5 million. Taylor Made sold the mare for Pozo de Luna.

—@CDeBernardisTDN

Pope Strikes For Mare With Fitting Name

After buying out her partners at $5 million on MGISW Shedaresthedevil (Daredevil) earlier in the session, Whisper Hill Farm's Mandy Pope was back in action, going to $2.9 million for GISW Wicked Whisper (Liam's Map) (Hip 253). The mare sold in foal to super sire Curlin, who was represented by three Breeders' Cup winners Saturday across town at Keeneland.

“It was the perfect name,” joked Pope's advisor Todd Quast. “She is a lovely mare. She has done everything right, great physical, bred to Curlin. We are very, very happy.”

A $500,000 KEESEP purchase by Alex and JoAnn Lieblong, Wicked Whisper won three of eight starts for trainer Steve Asmussen, topped by the GI Frizette S. She failed to get in foal to Uncle Mo last year, so the Curlin she is carrying will be her first foal.

Wicked Whisper is a half-sister to GSW & MGISP Point of Honor (Curlin) and SW Velvet Mood (Lohnro {Aus}). Her dam Zayanna (Bernardini) is a half to MGSW & GISP millionaire Mr Freeze (To Honor and Serve) and GSW Dilemma (Grand Slam).

“She has an amazing physical,” said Conrad Bandoroff of Denali Stud, which consigned the mare. “Alex and JoAnn Lieblong buy very good-looking fillies and she certainly fits that mold. She was fast. She was a good 2-year-old. Not only did she have the physical and the pedigree, but she had the racetrack performance. We wish them the best of luck.”

It's been a great weekend for Denali, who sold Saturday's GI Breeders' Cup Distaff winner as a yearling for $1.05 million at KEESEP.

“I've been beaming with pride,” said Bandoroff. “Just to have the smallest little fingerprint on Malathaat gives us tremendous pride. We are eternally grateful to Shadwell and Stonestreet for letting us ride the coat tails on a champion. The fangirl in me, I just love her.” —@CDeBernardisTDN

Kalypso to Japan

Japanese buyers made up a major part of the market at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton November sale and, despite a less favorable exchange rate in 2022, bidders from the Far East were quick to get on the board Sunday in Lexington when Katsumi Yoshida purchased Grade I winner Kalypso (Brody's Cause) (hip 192) for $2.1 million.

“We know that she was racing well and she had an outstanding racing career,” said Shingo Hashimoto, who signed the ticket on behalf of Yoshida. “We thought she was a very good candidate to bring to Japan. We're very excited to have bought her. We will breed her, but we haven't decided to keep her in the U.S. or send her to Japan yet.”

Kalypso, out of a full-sister to graded winner Prospective (Malibu Moon), was purchased for $240,000 at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton July Yearling Sale. Racing for David A. Bernsen, Gainesway Stable, Rockingham Ranch and Chad Littlefield, she won last year's GI La Brea S. and GII Santa Ynez S. and was second in the 2020 GI Starlet S.

Hashimoto agreed the exchange rate would make buying more difficult in Kentucky this year.

“We have a big list, but it's going to be tough to buy,” he said. “It's like 30% that the exchange rate has been depreciated for the Japanese yen. So it's tough, but we've got to deal with it.”

Despite the unfavorable exchange rate, Yoshida was plenty busy Sunday. In addition to Kalypso, his team signed for Beautiful Gift (Medaglia d'Oro) (hip 262) for $2 million; Bella Sofia (Awesome Patriot) (hip 266) for $1.85 million; Going to Vegas (Goldencents) (hip 293) for $1.5 million; and Plum Ali (First Samurai) (hip 220) for $600,000. @JessMartiniTDN

Grace Adler Gives Lund Peterson, Lanni, Even More Reason to Celebrate

Just a few hips after Gamine lit up the board at $7 million from Coolmore, Grace Adler (Curlin) reeled in a cool $2 million from Narvick International. Winner of the GI Del Mar Debutante, Grace Adler was also consigned by Hill 'n' Dale on behalf of Michael Lund Peterson.

Narvick's Emmanuel de Seroux said, “We bought her for Grand Farm of Japan. She was a fantastic 2-year-old and she's a beautiful filly by Curlin. She is everything that we were looking for.”

“The price was fair value, I think. Compared to some of the other horses that brought $3 million, she belongs with them.”

In addition to Lund Peterson and Hill 'n' Dale, a common thread between Gamine and Grace Adler are Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert and bloodstock agent Donato Lanni.

“Bob and I work everything together. We're a team. He really does all the heavy lifting, training them is the toughest part. He's done a great job developing these horses.”

“It's great to see the market as strong as it is. They are fillies that are beautiful, were successful on the racetrack and they retired sound. These are just the kind of mares people want to buy. They are collectors items. But it is just gratifying to see these horses go to the track and do well.” —@CBossTDN

Princess Grace Headed to Australia

MGSW & GISP Princess Grace (Karakontie {Jpn}) (Hip 221) is headed to Australia after being snapped up by the China Horse Club for $1.7 million Sunday evening. A trainer has yet to be determined.

“We thought she was an absolute queen, apex physical, very consistent form,” China Horse Club's Michael Smith said, after signing the ticket alongside the Teo family and other CHC principals. “We are going to take her to Australia and try to make her a Group 1 winner. She has another 12 months of racing in her and then she will be a beautiful addition to the broodmare band.”

As for the price, Smith said, “We really stretched to get her, but considering it was Sheikh Fahad and Coolmore who were the underbidders, I think it shows we were on the right track. Mr. Teo has always had a bold global vision for China Horse Club and we feel that Princess Grace can add to delivering on that given her international pedigree and profile.”

Owned and bred by John and Susan Moore, Princess Grace won a quartet of graded events on the grass and placed three times at the highest level while under the care of trainer Mike Stidham. The dark bay's record currently stands at 14-7-3-3 with earnings of $1,456,223.

Princess Grace is out MSP Masquerade (Silent Name {Jpn}), who is a half-sister to GSW Svea Dahl (Honor Grades).

—@CDeBernardisTDN

Wertheimer Family Gives $1.5M for Thinking of You

In 2015, American Pharoah reached the zenith of American racing when winning the Triple Crown. However, at stud, the Coolmore stallion has shown an international appeal, as illustrated by Thinking of You, who realized $1.5 million at Fasig Tipton Sunday night. Stepping up to secure the daughter of the unraced Galileo (Ire) mare Fabulous (Ire) was Pierre Yves Bureau, signing on behalf of the Wertheimer family. Offered as Hip 245 by Taylor Made Sales Agency, the mare was sold in foal to Triple Crown winner Justify.

“That is a page that we don't see very often in a sale,” said Bureau. “She has a very nice family and by a good young stallion. That makes a difference and I hope she'll be a good one. We thought she'd be more than a million but it was higher than I thought. I was a nice page.”

The 4-year-old is a full-sister to G1 Prix Saint-Alary heroine Above the Curve and a granddaughter of GSW Mariah's Storm (Rahy), who famously produced European Horse of the Year and leading sire Giant's Causeway.

“I thought she'd bring around that number,” said Taylor Made's Mark Taylor. “If you look down the page, it's one of the best families in the catalog. It's the family of Giant's Causeway. She has a sister that is a top-class runner and that is in foal to Justify. For people who breed at the top of the market, she ticks all the boxes. And she was a beautiful mare on the end of the shank, so I was confident she'd bring north of a million, and could bring 1.5 and maybe a touch more. So that was a very fair price.”

Taylor Made is very familiar with the family, also having sold Mariah's Storm.

“We sold Mariah's Storm, carrying Giant's Causeway,” recalled Taylor. “She brought $2.6 million. It seemed like Coolmore paid a lot at the time but it turned out to be a bargain.”

Commenting on the desire for international pedigrees, he added, “The nature of her pedigree is what everyone is looking for. The world is shrinking. You're seeing horses from Japan racing all over the world and European horses racing over here. So I think you'll see that more and more. This pedigree is a great representation.”–@CBossTDN

Gun Runner Filly Proves Popular at FTKNOV

A daughter of red-hot sire Gun Runner (Hip 97) sparked some fireworks during the weanling portion of FTKNOV, summoning $675,000 from Randy Hartley, who purchased her on behalf of a partnership.

“We will see how it goes,” said Hartley, who works in partnership with Dean DeRenzo. “Our goal will probably be to pinhook her back as a yearling. We are just trying to buy some nice babies.”

He continued, “We love Gun Runner so much. Gun Runners are so hard to get. She is a special filly with a big pedigree and we felt she had so much residual down the road. We sold Taiba as a 2-year-old, so we have special feelings for him. We are trying to buy the best Gun Runners we can get our hands on.”

Hip 97 was the second daughter of Gun Runner to eclipse the $600,000 mark Sunday, following Hip 31, who brought $625,000 earlier in the day.

“She is a big, leggy, two-turn horse,” said Hartley, who scooped up a son of Gun Runner (Hip 153) for $550,000 later in the day. “She's all class. Her presence is different than anything I've seen here so far. When the other filly brought $625,000 earlier, we knew we'd have to go to at least $600,000 because this one is a bit stretchier.”

Bred by Newstead Corp, Hip 97 is out of the Tapit mare Temptress, who is also the dam of MGSW & MGISP millionaire Tenfold (Curlin). The weanling's third dam is MGISW millioanire Possibly Perfect (Northern Baby). Hip 97 was consigned by Elite, which is known for selling racehorses and broodmares.

“We are in the weanling business now,” said Elite's Brad Weisbord. “We expected a little less, but Gun Runner is hot, the market is hot and that filly was hot. We're excited for the seller. Randy and Dean do a great job. They will probably turn her into a seven-figure horse.”

He added, “We will probably branch out a bit in '23. The only reason we sold a weanling here is because we had a baby out of a momma that we are selling. We got a call and were asked if we were selling weanlings. We had one, so figured why not take two. But, we said it has to be a great one because Elite sells at the top end of the market, so we only want elite product. The seller said this filly was a superstar. She sold great. We are all very excited.” —@CDeBernardisTDN

The New Hill Makes Most of Kentucky Trip

The New Hill Farm had just one horse in its Fasig-Tipton November consignment, but the operation made the most of the opportunity when selling a weanling filly by Gun Runner (hip 31) for $625,000 to the phone bid of Dell Ennis. The bay, who was bred by Mark Erlandson, is out of the unraced Mama Yay (Mineshaft). Erlandson purchased the mare, in foal to Arrogate, for $20,000 at the 2020 Keeneland November sale. She is the dam of Empire House (Empire Maker), who finished third in the GII Zenyatta S. last month and is from the immediate family of Saturday's GI Breeders' Cup Sprint winner Elite Power.

“It's such a great boutique sale and all of the right people are here,” said The New Hill Farm's Lili Kobielski. “A filly like this deserves to be here. She is obviously by the right sire and the female family was already fantastic. Then we had that big update with Elite Power winning the Sprint and her half-sister placed in a graded stakes. So the stars all just aligned.”

Of the trip to Kentucky from her base in Hoosick Falls, New York, Kobielski said, “She brought us here. Our farm is in New York and we usually sell in New York at the Saratoga Fall Sale or the Preferred Sale or the Select Sale up there. But this just seemed like the perfect spot.”

Tanya Johnson prepped the filly at The New Hill and admitted the weanling may have been pampered.

“It was a lot of fun and a great pleasure to be given the opportunity to even have a horse like that,” Johnson said. “We knew she was pretty special the minute she got there, so she may have gotten away with a few things that another one might not have.”

Asked to describe the weanling's personality, Johnson smiled and said, “She's a diva.”

While Mama Yay is currently in Kentucky, Erlandson is active in the New York market.

“Mark participates in the New York program and that's how we met,” Kobielski said. “Several of his mares are in New York, but I'm not sure if he's planning on sending her to back to have a New York-bred foal. That would be thrilling, of course. We love the New York-bred program, obviously, and the rewards are fantastic. I am delighted for the breeder. He's very sharp. He bought the mare for $20,000 and he bred to Gun Runner in his bubble year before he became the superstar that he is. So it's just a wonderful result.” @JessMartiniTDN

SWEET ZAZ (f, 3, Nyquist–Century Park, by General Meeting) was beaten double digits into 12th when debuting in a nine-furlong turf event in March, but switches to perhaps a more suitable surface for this second go. A $67K Keeneland September buyback, the late April foal is out of the winner of the 2009 GIII Santa Ysabel S. (synthetic) who was purchased by Narvick International out of the 2017 KEENOV sale and produced a filly by Exaggerator in Kentucky that was subsequently exported to Japan. Century Park dropped Sweet Zaz in the Bluegrass and has also since been sent to Japan, where she foaled a colt from the first crop of GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint winner Four Wheel Drive (American Pharoah) Mar. 25. B-Takahiro Wada (KY)

Cavale Doree was purchased by Katsumi Yoshida for 650,000gns ($883,272) with this colt in utero at the 2019 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. B-Northern Racing

by Jessica Martini & Christie DeBernardis

LEXINGTON, KY – The Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale, delayed a day due to last week's blizzard, took some time to find its footing, but gained in strength throughout Tuesday's opening session to end the day with figures up compared to its 2020 opening session.

“We are very pleased with the way things ended up,” said Keeneland's vice president of sales Tony Lacy. “We were expecting a very solid day. There was some nice quality, especially towards the end. And that is the way it ended up. The numbers were pretty stable with last year's numbers until about halfway through the day and then we started creeping ahead. I think we ended up with $18 million in gross, so that's really strong for the first session.”

In all, 249 horses sold Tuesday for a gross of $18,015,200. The average of $72,350 was up 23.22% from a year ago, while the median rose 11.43% to $39,000. With 85 horses reported not sold, the buy-back rate was 25.45%. It was 31.79% a year ago.

Three Chimneys Farm purchased the session's top-priced offering when going to $750,000 to dissolve its partnership with Hill 'n' Dale Farm on the 2-year-old filly Princess Lele (Quality Road), a daughter of Carina Mia (Malibu Moon). The operation teamed with Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm to acquire the mare Remedy (Creative Cause) for the session's second highest price of $470,000. Again buying out Hill 'n' Dale, Three Chimneys purchased Justly, a 2-year-old filly by Justify out of Take Charge Brandi (Giant's Causeway) for $410,000 to have three of the session's top four prices.

“It was great to see the domestic market very strong,” Lacy said. “There was a lot of positivity there again. The demand for quality was as eager as ever. We are looking forward to tomorrow and I think it will be more of the same.”

Adrian Regan of Hunter Valley Farm admitted the consignment was having just an average day before sending the top-priced short yearling through the ring late in the session. Emmanuel de Seroux of Narvick International purchased the colt by Gun Runner for $375,000.

“The middle market seems a little weaker than Novemeber,” Regan said. “But then we've been trying to buy and when we follow something in, we're not getting close. The good ones are making a premium.”

Becky Thomas of Sequel Bloodstock agreed some of the demand from the November sale was missing Tuesday at Keeneland.

“For me, I haven't felt the sense of urgency in the market that there was in November at the end of the tax year,” Thomas said. “I feel like it is a fair market, but there isn't the feeling of 'gotta have a horse, gotta spend money.' Everybody made money last year, so they kind of needed to spend money and there isn't that sense right now.”

Tuesday's session ended with a flurry of activity from a strong group of supplemental entries to the auction. Larry Best's OXO Equine purchased the final horse through the ring, multiple stakes winner Hello Beautiful (Golden Lad), for $410,000.

“I think after the September sale, people had enough money that they didn't feel like that had to sell in January,” Lacy said. “So we felt the supplements brought back a little bit of quality that might have been lacking in the depth of the catalogue. I think people saw there was a real premium on quality in November and because of that they decided this might be a good opportunity to sell in this market.”

Keeneland's director of sales operations Cormac Breathnach added, “We had a lot of quality in the initial catalogue. Seven of the top 10 sellers came from the main part of the catalogue, but this freedom to accommodate fillies like Hello Beautiful added some quality to the back-end and finished the session strongly. Hopefully that creates some momentum in and of itself, too.”

At the end of the session, Keeneland sold a no-guarantee season of Gun Runner donated by Ron Winchell and Three Chimneys for $130,000. Proceeds from the season, which was purchased by Bill Layni, went to tornado relief efforts in Western Kentucky.

The Keeneland January sale continues through Friday with sessions beginning daily at 10 a.m.

Three Chimneys Cleans Up

Three Chimneys Farm bought out partner Hill 'n' Dale Farm on a pair of juvenile fillies from stellar families Tuesday at Keeneland and then added to another partnership to ultimately acquire three of the session's top four lots. Bidding on the internet, the Torrealba family's operation acquired Princesse Lele (Quality Road) (hip 276), a daughter of Grade I winner and 'TDN Rising Star' Carina Mia (Malibu Moon), for $750,000. Earlier in the session, Three Chimneys bought Justly (Justify) (hip 176), a daughter of champion Take Charge Brandi (Giant's Causeway), for $410,000. Both fillies were offered by John Sikura's Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency. Three Chimneys and Whisper Hill Farm teamed up to purchase Remedy (Creative Cause) (hip 298) for $470,000.

Carina Mia was purchased by Three Chimneys for $410,000 at the 2014 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and she went on to win the 2016 GI Acorn S. in the farm's colors. Sold to Shadai Farm for $2.6 million while in foal to Uncle Mo at last year's Fasig-Tipton November sale, she is also the dam of an unraced 3-year-old colt by Curlin and a yearling colt by that stallion, both of whom were bred in partnership by Three Chimneys and Hill 'n' Dale.

“She is a beautiful physical,” Three Chimneys' Doug Cauthen said of Princesse Lele. “I know a lot of people looked at her in the summer. She was one of the favorite yearlings of some high-end buyers, but unfortunately at the time she had a little issue that kept her out of the sale. So we waited and broke her and then, just to clean up the partnership, brought her to the sale.”

Carina Mia is a half-sister to Grade I winner Miss Match (Arg) (Indygo Shiner) and her unraced dam is a full-sister to Grade I winner Miss Linda (Arg) (Southern Halo).

“It's a family that has done so well,” Cauthen said. “We hope she can run and do well at the track, but she is such a good physical and with a great pedigree that we are always looking long term to the broodmare band. That's what the Torrealba family does–look at the long term.”

Of the filly's session-topping price, Cauthen said, “That exceeded expectations by quite a bit. As a buyer you always want to get them for less, but it's such an amazing family and there was a lot of active bidding amongst people well beyond the two partners.”

Cauthen added of the two fillies purchased out of the partnership, “They would have been on the list no matter what. Would you have paid full retail at 100%? It's a little easier at 50%, but it's still money no matter how you look at it. They were expensive, but hopefully in the long-term it will pay off.” @JessMartiniTDN

More Brandi for Three Chimneys

In the final dissolution of a partnership between Three Chimneys Farm and Hill 'n' Dale Equine Holdings on the mare Take Charge Brandi (Giant's Causeway), Three Chimneys purchased the champion's newly turned 2-year-old filly Justly (Justify) (hip 176) for $410,000 via an internet bid Tuesday at Keeneland, just 10 days after her 3-year-old half-brother Courvoisier (Tapit) won the Jerome S. at Aqueduct.

Three Chimneys and Hill 'n' Dale purchased Take Charge Brandi for $3.2 million at the 2019 Keeneland November sale to dissolve the Elevage partnership of Hill 'n' Dale and Glen Hill Farm. Three Chimneys purchased the mare, in foal to Uncle Mo, outright for $1.15 million at the Fasig-Tipton November sale last year and purchased her weanling filly by Quality Road in partnership with Glen Hill Farm for $450,000 at that same auction. Both the now-yearling and 2-year-old were purchased with an eye towards their future career as broodmares.

“This filly in particular, with that pedigree, was always an appealing prospect as a future broodmare,” Three Chimneys' Doug Cauthen said. “With the big update of Courvoisier winning the stakes and hopefully going on to get further black-type, that just added to the appeal of the filly.”

Justly has been broken and has been in training in Ocala with Eddie Woods.

“Eddie said she was a really good mover, tough, and had the right attitude,” Cauthen said. “That part was always there, obviously we will see what happens going forward, but the main focus was her future as a broodmare down the road. Whether she hits the track or not is not really a primary concern. It's a family that keeps on giving and hopefully down the road, she will prove to be a nice broodmare prospect for Three Chimneys.”

Of the Quality Road yearling, Cauthen added, “We are looking forward to racing her and she will be a broodmare for the partnership as well.”

Take Charge Brandi, named champion 2-year-old filly of 2014, is a half-sister to multiple Grade I winner Omaha Beach (War Front) and her second dam is broodmare of the year Take Charge Lady (Dehere), who produced Will Take Charge, Take Charge Indy, and As Time Goes By.

The 10-year-old mare will be bred back to Three Chimneys' standout young sire Gun Runner this year, according to Cauthen.

“It's the final phase of the dispersal between Hill 'n' Dale and Three Chimneys, no other reason,” Hill 'n' Dale's John Sikura said of Justly's engagement at the Keeneland January sale. “We had two 2-year-olds left and they are in this sale. It was not pre-arranged; it was the next venue. We had not come this far down the road yet so we were not prepared to sell them in September. Her dam sold in November and this is the last logical step.”

Sikura is co-owner of Take Charge Brandi's 3-year-old son Courvoisier, who won the Jerome S. on New Year's Day for trainer Kelly Breen, and he was underbidder on the 2-year-old Tuesday.

“She is a lovely filly, I tried hard to buy her, I was the underbidder,” Sikura said of Justly. “It's a lovely, active pedigree and there is a good current 3-year-old. Everything is positive.”

Of the juvenile's final price, Sikura said, “She wasn't perfect up front. I thought that might provide a little opportunity, but that pedigree is so strong. I thought she was full value for sure. Special fillies are hard to find. You have to chase to find and own them, but once you do, they are a valued commodity.” @JessMartiniTDN

Three Chimneys, Whisper Hill Team For Remedy

Even as Three Chimneys Farm was dissolving one partnership, it was adding to another one when teaming with Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm to purchase Remedy (Creative Cause) (hip 298) for $470,000 from the Taylor Made Sales Agency consignment Tuesday at Keeneland.

“That's been a real positive partnership,” Cauthen said. “We bought one in the November sale together and it's nice to get another one.”

Whisper Hill and Three Chimneys teamed up to purchase Magical World (Distorted Humor) (hip 203) for $5.2 million at last year's Fasig-Tipton November sale.

Remedy was purchased by Twin Creeks Racing for $200,000 at the 2016 Keeneland September sale. Racing for Twin Creeks, Medallion Racing and Parkland Thoroughbreds, she was runner-up in the 2018 GIII Comely S. and GIII Remington Park Oaks. She sold to Twin Creeks Farm for $570,000 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton February sale and produced a colt by Constitution in 2021. She was not mated last year and sold empty Tuesday.

The 7-year-old mare is out of Daisy Mason (Orientate), an unraced daughter of Leslie's Lady (Tricky Creek) and a half-sister to Beholder, Mendelssohn and Into Mischief.

“She is a good physical and from an amazing family,” Cauthen said. “It doesn't get better than Into Mischief and Mendelssohn. All reports are that, with a little luck, we should be able to get her in foal and get a great-looking Gun Runner out of her because that's who she will go to.” @JessMartiniTDN

Beautiful Ending to Best's Day

Larry Best of OXO Equine acquired four broodmares during Tuesday's opening session of the Keeneland January sale and saved his biggest purchase for last when buying Hello Beautiful (Golden Lad) (hip 430G).

“Most likely she'll go to Instagrand,” Best said after signing the ticket on the multiple stakes winner, who was consigned by ELiTE. “But I have three stallions. I have Instagrand and I also have Instilled Regard and, kind of under the radar, I have Rowayton.”

Best said he remembered Hello Beautiful's career, which included eight stakes victories and earnings of over $580,000, becauase the 5-year-old finished behind his Mundaye Call in the 2020 Runhappy Audubon Oaks.

“We beat her at Ellis Park, but I forgot about her after that,” Best said. “When I looked at the record, she's a very fast horse and a multiple stakes winner. And I love the Medaglia d'Oro bloodline.”

Early in Tuesday's session, Best went to $220,000 to acquire Evil Lyn (Wicked Strong) (hip 118) and $210,000 to acquire Ego Trip (Ire) (No Nay Never) (hip 113). Just before securing Hello Beautiful, the last horse through the ring Tuesday, he purchased multiple graded stakes placed Reagan's Edge (Competitive Edge) (hip 430) for $220,000.

“I was really pleased with Reagan's Edge's price,” Best said. “She is a very fast horse. I own Center Aisle and Reagan's Edge beat her three times. Now Center Aisle is three for three and just won a graded stakes. But I couldn't beat the horse, so I bought her.” @JessMartiniTDN

Haunted Heroine Proves Popular

Graded stakes producer Haunted Heroine (Ghostzapper) (Hip 148) sparked the first big fireworks during Tuesday's opening session, summoning $420,000 from Mike Cline, acting as agent for Andrew Warren, whose parents campaigned MGISW City of Light (Quality Road).

“He has a longstanding relationship with Lane's End,” said Cline, who is the former manager of that operation. “We bought her to breed to City of Light.”

A two-time stakes winner, Haunted Heroine is a half to Grade I winner Celestine (Scat Daddy) and stakes winner Silent Sting (Silent Name {Jpn}). The 11-year-old mare's second foal, Twin Creeks Farm homebred Law Professor (Constitution), captured the off-turf GII Santa Anita Mathis Mile S. Dec. 26 for City of Light's trainer Michael McCarthy. She was bred to City of Light on a late cover in June, but did not get in foal.

“She is a nice young mare and is proven,” Cline said. “She has already had a graded stakes winner. There are not that many of them around. She is pretty and we thought she mated well with City of Light. We are happy to have her and feel good about being able to buy one of that quality in January.”

Haunted Heroine was consigned to the sale by Taylor Made Sales Agency. —@CDeBernardisTDN

De Seroux Gets a Gun Runner

Emmanuel de Seroux of Narvick International purchased the highest-priced short yearling of Tuesday's opening session of the Keeneland January sale when going to $375,000 to acquire a colt by Gun Runner (hip 365) from the Hunter Valley Farm consignment.

“He will race in the U.S.,” de Seroux said, while declining to name his client.

De Seroux said the yearling looked to be the complete package.

“First he is by Gun Runner,” de Seroux said. “Second, he is a very athletic colt. He walks very well. He's nice. We loved everything about him.”

De Seroux purchased a weanling colt by Gun Runner (hip 32) for $380,000 at last year's Keeneland November sale, so Tuesday's competitive price was no surprise.

“The good Gun Runners, you have a lot of people trying to get them,” he said.

The dark bay colt is out of Take a Memo (Empire Maker), a daughter of graded winner Memorette (Memo {Chi}). He was bred by Hunter Valley's Adrian Regan and Fergus Galvin.

“To be honest, we were having a fairly average day in the ring up until this and we were getting a little worried he wouldn't get his full value,” Regan admitted. “Thankfully, the right people showed up.”

Gun Runner's stellar start to his stud career with his first 2-year-olds last year led Regan and Galvin to call an audible with hip 365, who had originally been targeted at last year's Keeneland November sale.

“We had him here in November and we had a little bit of a mishap with him down at the barn,” Regan explained. “We weren't happy with the way he was moving afterwards, so we sent him home. We were thinking of keeping him to sell as a yearling, but Gun Runner was doing so good, we decided to send him in there. We knew he was a good horse.” @JessMartiniTDN

Sequel Brings November to January

Becky Thomas's Sequel New York was absent from the Keeneland November Sale due to her son's wedding, causing her to re-route a group of November-quality horses to the Keeneland January Sale. That move proved to be a good one, as Sequel led all consignors by average at $161,833–aside from Clarkland Farm, who only sold one horse for $240,000.

“It was my son Zachary's wedding in November, so this is really a November consignment in January,” Thomas said.

The Sequel New York consignment was topped by the $350,000 mare Call to Service (To Honor and Serve) (Hip 424), who was purchased by Andrew Cary on behalf of Coteau Grove Farms. Cary purchased Munnings' Finest (Munnings) (Hip 235) from the Sequel consignment for $300,000 for Coteau Grove earlier in the session and she is also in foal to Authentic.

In foal to Horse of the Year Authentic, Call to Service was supplemented to the sale after receiving a timely update courtesy of her half-brother Giant Game (Giant's Causeway), who was third in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile and is currently prepping for a start in Gulfstream's GIII Holy Bull S.

Call to Service is also a half-sister to MGSW Isotherm (Lonhro {Aus}) and GISP Gio Game (Gio Ponti). Thomas purchased the 6-year-old mare for $110,000 for a partnership consisting of herself, longtime partner Lewis Lakin and Spendthrift's Mark Toothaker at the 2020 KEENOV sale. She was carrying a foal from the first crop of champion Vino Rosso at the time and produced that colt Feb. 16 of last year.

“She is a half to a horse, who is on the Derby trail for Dale Romans,” Thomas said when asked what led to the decision to supplement Call to Service to KEEJAN. “He ran a really big third in the Breeders' Cup and we've been watching him fire bullet works every week. Plus, the average for mares in foal to Authentic was strong in November. We are very excited about Giant Game, so we thought it would be a good opportunity for us. We are all a group of pinhookers, so we are very happy.”

Thomas added, “I also have to thank Tim Hamlin and H. Allen Poindexter, who bred Call to Service and her talented siblings. I have seen this family year after year because of them, so when this mare became available in 2020, I already knew what the whole family looked like. When she went through the sale, Mark [Toothaker] said, 'Buy her!'”

Sequel New York was also responsible for the day's most expensive yearling filly in Hip 317, a daughter of Triple Crown hero Justify, who summoned $300,000 from Brian Graves.

Bred by Lakin's Lakland Farm, Hip 317 is the first foal out of San Saria (Ire) (Australia {GB}), who is a daughter of GSW San Sicharia (Daggers Drawn).

“She was always fancy,” Thomas said. “She looks like a colt. She is really, really strong. We hand walk all of these horses and she walked my main yearling man Humberto every day. He couldn't really walk her because she was walking him. She is just a machine. I love her.”

“We will definitely bring her back through [the sale ring],” said Graves, who has enjoyed great success pinhooking yearlings in the summer and fall. “I just thought she was gorgeous, maybe the prettiest Justify I've seen yet. She just did everything right for me. She is drop-dead gorgeous and has an athletic walk. I liked everything about her.”

Sequel New York offered a total of 14 horses, all of which went through the ring during Tuesday's opening session. They sold 12 of those for a gross of $1.942 million.

When asked if her consignment stood out more in the much smaller January sale, Thomas said, “That is hard to tell because I do think there was a lot of money to spent in November. However, I think we stood out here because these were November horses. I thought Keeneland did a phenomenal job, moving the sale back and getting horses placed, giving people a chance to look at them and us an opportunity to show them. The horses were well received and we are happy to be here.” —@CDeBernardisTDN

Cary Stays Busy at KEEJAN

Bloodstock agent Andrew Cary was quite busy throughout Tuesday's opening session, scooping up three mares, two for Coteau Grove Farms and one for that operation's new stallion No Parole (Violence), who they stand in Louisiana in partnership with Whispering Oaks.

Both of Cary's acquisitions for Coteau Grove Farms were in foal to reigning Horse of the Year and GI Kentucky Derby winner Authentic and both hailed from the Sequel New York consignment. The most expensive was Call to Service (To Honor and Serve (Hip 424), who is a half-sister to last term's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile third Giant Game (Giant's Causeway). He takes his next step down the Derby trail in the Feb. 5 GIII Holy Bull S. at Gulfstream.

“Obviously, there is a big potential update with the 3-year-old,” Cary said. “The mare is already a tremendous producer with what she's already done. She is also another mare in foal to Authentic, which was not by design. It is just the way it worked out, but you can't get too much of a good thing.”

He added, “It gives us a lot to root for in the spring. Giant Game just worked another bullet this morning [five furlongs in :59.85 at Gulfstream] and hopefully he will keep on trucking down the Derby trail.”

Earlier in the session, Cary bought Munnings Finest (Munnings) (hip 235) for $300,000. A half to MSW Baffle Me (First Samurai), she hails from the family of top sire Maclean's Music and GSWs Uncle Chuck (Uncle Mo), Kentuckian (Tiznow) and Electric Forest (Curlin). The 6-year-old mare's first foal is a now-2-year-old filly by City of Light and she aborted her 2021 foal.

“She was another mare in foal to Authentic,” Cary said. “She is a great-looking mare with a nice family. Those are the types everyone wants. You just have to keep swinging and hope to get some of them.”

Cary also picked up Catenaria (Bernardini) (Hip 67) for $80,000. She is currently in foal to Complexity, but was purchased with the intention of sending her to No Parole.–@CDeBernardisTDN

Twin Creeks Goes Back to the Well

Randy Gullatt and Steve Davison's Twin Creeks Racing campaigned MGISW Constitution (Tapit) in partnership with WinStar and he has gone on to be a very successful stallion. The operation returned to the well Tuesday, going to $260,000 to acquire a son of their former stable star (Hip 125).

“He has a lot of size and is a good, athletic colt,” said Gullatt after signing the ticket. “He has the same qualities as some of the good Constitution colts I have been around.”

When asked about Constitution's success as a stallion, Gullatt said, “It's pretty incredible. He is just over-achieving all of the time. It just gives you a lot of confidence that his [offspring] will over-achieve and do some good things.”

Consigned by Taylor Made, the chestnut colt was bred by Fred Hertrich, who had an outstanding year in 2021, breeding six Grade I winners either alone or in partnership. His operation had a hand in producing top-level scorers Americanrevolution (Constitution), Juju's Map (Liam's Map), Beyond Brilliant (Twirling Candy), Hit the Road (More Than Ready), Pinehurst (Twirling Candy) and Maxim Rate (Exchange Rate).

Out of Fifth Avenue Ball (Deputy Minister), Hip 125 is a half to SW Gotham Gala (Smart Strike) and SP Eastwood (Speightstown).

“He's an awful good Constitution and we really thought he would bring something in that $250,000 to $350,000 range,” Hertrich said. —@CDeBernardisTDN

Munnings Colt Proves Popular

A short yearling by Munnings (hip 128) brought a final bid of $240,000 from Joe Hardoon, racing manager for Al Gold's Gold Square LLC, during Tuesday's first session of the Keeneland January sale. The dark bay colt was owned and consigned by Clarkland Farm and is out of Forget Me Not (Uncle Mo), a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Needs Supervision (Paynter).

“He was a really classy, well-balanced colt,” Hardoon, who did his bidding alongside trainer Chad Summers, said. “He looks like he is going to be fast and can win early. We decided to take him to the races.”

Clarkland Farm purchased Forget Me Not, a winner of her lone career start for Fox Hill Farms in 2017, for $80,000 at the 2018 Keeneland November sale. The mare's first foal, a filly by Maclean's Music, sold for $115,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton July Yearling Sale.

The 23-year-old Hardoon purchased three yearlings at the Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Yearlings Sale last August, going to $170,000 for a colt by Unified (hip 539) and a son of Bolt d'Oro (hip 513) and to $120,000 for a colt by Maclean's Music (hip 509).

“We're just picking our spots at this sale,” Hardoon said of Tuesday's purchase. “We're usually more active with yearlings in September and later in the fall, so we're just picking our spots here and looking to find quality horses.” @JessMartiniTDN

Gun Runner Season Summons $130K

A season to 2021's leading freshman sire Gun Runner, donated by his owners Ron Winchell and the Torrealba family's Three Chimneys Farm, brought $130,000 from Peter Penny, who was acting as agent for Bill Layni, at the end of Tuesday's session. All proceeds from that sale will go directly to the victims of the deadly tornadoes that ravaged Western Kentucky last month.

“Everyone in Kentucky at every level wanted to do the right thing for those hit by the disaster,” said Three Chimneys Farm's Doug Cauthen. “This plus another $50,000 from Kentucky Downs and $50,000 from Three Chimneys is a step in the right direction. The whole horse community has done a great job. I have seen a million different donations. Gun Runner's owners, the Torrealba family and Ron Winchell, just wanted to do their part. It was a good way to do it with the sale being here. There are no more Gun Runner seasons around, so we thought it would bring a good number.”

Keeneland waived their commission on this offering so 100% of the proceeds will go directly to the cause.

“I thought it was a wonderful gesture by Ron Winchell and Three Chimneys, going to an amazing cause,” said Keeneland's Tony Lacy. “Having been able to support the effort and getting $130,000 for the victims of the Western Kentucky tornado–it's something that's great to see the industry getting behind. It's something that is very important to our state. We all talk about figures and numbers, but really the people of the state, it's a part of who we are as well. So this is great to be able to give back and support such a great endeavor. There is no commission, it is 100% going to the victims. We were just happy to facilitate the process. I think it was really well received. A lot of people showed a lot of interest.”

Gun Runner was bumped up to $125,000 for the 2022 breeding season after a record-setting freshman year in 2021 with two Grade I winners, six black-type winners and 31 individual winners. —@CDeBernardisTDN

The fireworks at the annual Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton November sales are always a highlight of the year as seven-figure bids abound on some of racing's top broodmares and broodmare prospects. But after the dust settles, it can be years before words get out on the breeding careers of the sales' top offerings. We catch up with the connections of a few of these most recent million-dollar broodmares and learn of their mating plans for 2021 in our ongoing 'Million-Dollar Matings' series.

CONSTELLATION (Bellamy Road-For Royalty, by Not For Love)

Sale: 2018 Fasig-Tipton November Sale

Purchaser/Owner: Don Alberto Corporation

Produce Record: 2019 Curlin colt, 2021 Into Mischief filly

2021 Booking: Quality Road

Offered carrying her first foal by Curlin, Grade I winner and 'TDN Rising Star' Constellation was purchased for $3.15 million by the Don Alberto Corporation at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton November Sale.

Her Curlin colt would go on to sell for $250,000 to Repole Stables and St. Elias Stables at last year's Keeneland September Sale.

After visiting Into Mischief but failing to produce a foal in her first year with Don Alberto, she was bred back to the Spendthrift sire last year.

Don Alberto's former Executive Director Fabricio Buffolo reported that Constellation foaled her Into Mischief filly on Jan. 31.

“We are extremely happy that she had a nice, robust filly,” he said. “She has been developing well. You can tell that she has all the parts there to turn into a nice filly as she grows.”

Buffolo said that Constellation will be bred to Quality Road this year.

“It will be interesting to see how she will produce with a horse like him with more scope and size,” he noted. “It's all about getting to know the mares and how they produce and it's a mating that has some contrasts on the physical aspect, which sometimes can be rewarding. Bellamy Road has only three blacktype winners as a broodmares sire and all three are from Mr. Prospector-line stallions.”

After a 'Rising Star'-worthy debut win as a juvenile for LNJ Foxwoods, Constellation ran in the money in her next two graded starts before capping off her 2-year-old season with a win in the Furlough S. As a sophomore, she added two more stakes wins before taking the GI La Brea S. At four, the chestnut ran second in four straight graded races including the GI Madison S. at Keeneland.

CALEDONIA ROAD (Quality Road-Come A Callin, by Dixie Union)

Sale: 2018 Fasig-Tipton November Sale

Purchaser/Owner: Narvick International

Produce Record: 2020 Justify filly, 2021 Justify colt

2021 Booking: Kizuna (Jpn)

Eclipse Champion Caledonia Road was purchased by agent Emmanuel de Seroux of Narvick International for $2.3 million at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton November Sale.

The million-dollar earner was bred to Justify as a maiden and produced a filly in January last year. De Seroux reported that the filly is “doing great” at the Ito family's Grand Farm in Japan, where Caledonia Road also resides.

The mare was bred back to Justify and foaled a colt on Jan. 27 this year.

“He's reported to be a very good foal,” de Seroux said.

This year, Caledonia Road will visit champion Kizuna, a son of the late influential Japanese sire Deep Impact and the leading Japanese freshman sire in 2019.

Trained by Ralph Nicks, Caledonia Road won on debut and ran second in the GI Frizette S. before taking the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Filles to win Eclipse honors for Champion 2-Year-Old Filly in 2017. She is a half-sister to stakes winner One of a Kind (Lemon Drop Kid) and hails from the family of Grade I winners Data Link (War Front) and Hymn Book (Arch).

CATHRYN SOPHIA (Street Boss-Sheave, by Mineshaft)

Sale: 2017 Keeneland November Sale

Purchaser/Owner: Bridlewood Farm and Don Alberto

Produce Record: 2018 Pioneerof the Nile filly, 2019 Medaglia d'Oro filly, 2020 Into Mischief colt. In foal to Curlin.

2021 Booking: None

One year after Bridlewood Farm and Don Alberto partnered up to buy a sales-topping Baffled (Distorted Humor) for $3.5 million, the same duo went to $2.3 million at the 2017 Keeneland November Sale to purchase 'TDN Rising Star' Cathryn Sophia. The 2016 Oaks heroine was carrying her first foal by Pioneerof the Nile.

The Pioneerof the Nile filly, now named Mezcal, was purchased for $625,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September Sale by Bobby Flay, but does not yet have any recorded works or starts.

Cathryn Sophia produced a Medaglia d'Oro filly in 2019 and last year, foaled an Into Mischief colt in May.

“He is a late foal that has developed so well over the last few months,” said Don Alberto's Fabricio Buffolo. “He is a strong individual and typical of what you expect of the sire.”

Buffolo reported that this year, Cathryn Sophia is in foal to Curlin. A similar mating proved successful when the Hill 'n' Dale sire produced champion and young sire Vino Rosso with a Street Cry (Ire) mare.

Because Cathryn Sophia's Curlin foal is expected to arrive late, Buffolo said that she will take a year off this year.

Purchased as a yearling by Cash Is King LLC and trained by John Servis, Cathryn Sophia broke her maiden on debut by 12 3/4 lengths before crushing the competition in the Gin Talking S. by 16 1/4 lengths in her next start. She won her sophomore debut in the GII Forward Gal. and maintained the undefeated streak in the GII Davona Dale S. After a third-place finish in the GI Ashland S., the Maryland-bred scored a victory in the GI Kentucky Oaks. In the later half of her sophomore season, she ran third in both the GI Acorn S. and GI Cotillion S. and caught a win in the Princess of Sylmar S.

Cathryn Sophia was offered at the 2016 Fasig-Tipton November Sale as a broodmare or racing prospect and sold to SF Bloodstock for $1.4 million. It was announced a month later that she would retire from racing, and she returned to the sales ring a year later in foal to Pioneerof the Nile.

GALILEO GAL (Galileo (Ire)-Alpha Lupi (Ire), by Rahy)

Sale: 2018 Fasig-Tipton November Sale

Purchaser/Owner: Craig Bernick

Produce Record: 2020 Kingman (GB) filly. In foal to Lope de Vega (Ire).

2021 Booking: Kingman (GB)

The regally-bred Galileo Gal was offered at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Watch out feature leading up to the sale here. She was purchased by Craig Bernick for $1.4 million.

She was sent to Norelands Stud in Ireland and was first bred to Juddmonte's hot young sire Kingman.

That mating produced a filly that is now a yearling.

“We are happy with [her],” Bernick said. “Our plan is to put her into training with Jessica Harrington next year.”

Galileo Gal was next bred to Ballylinch Stud's Lope de Vega (Ire) and Bernick reported that she is expected to foal any day now. She will return to Kingman later this year.

Bred by the Niarchos family, Galileo Gal was purchased by Gary Barber as a yearling and brought to race in North America, where she was a winner at three and four. The chestnut is a half-sister to champion and four-time Group 1 winner Alpha Centauri (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), as well a second G1 Coronation S. winner in Alpine Star (Ire) (Sea the Moon {Ger}) and stakes winner Tenth Star (Ire) (Dansili {GB}). Her family includes several other champions in Miesque (Nureyev), East of the Moon (Private Account) and Rumplestiltskin (Ire) (Danehill), as well as Group 1 winners and sires Kingmambo (Mr. Prospector) and Karakontie (Jpn) (Bernstein).

Larry Best's OXO Equine paid $1.95 million for Grade 1 winner and millionaire Concrete Rose and $1.9 million for Indian Miss, the dam of champion Mitole who is in foal to Into Mischief, to acquire the two most expensive horses sold during a day of strong trade at Monday's Book 1 opening session of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

With a total of six purchases for $5,015,000, Best led all buyers for the session.

Keeneland sold 128 horses on Monday for $49,775,000, for an average of $388,867 and a median of $280,000. Eight horses brought $1 million or more.

“Overall, we are really happy with how the day went,” Keeneland President-Elect and Interim Head of Sales Shannon Arvin said, noting that the energy created by this weekend's Breeders' Cup World Championships at Keeneland carried over to the November Sale. “It was a solid day of trade. We were pleased with the broad domestic and international participation. Japanese buyers bought three of the day's top-priced horses.”

Online bidding continued to gain popularity with buyers. During today's session, 62 bids were placed via the internet, resulting in nine purchases, one of them for seven figures, and gross sales of more than $6 million.

“It was very good to see the different platforms we put out there – internet bidding, phone bidding and the three different bidding areas on the sales grounds – were well utilized today,” Keeneland Director of Sales Operations Geoffrey Russell said. “One of the benefits of internet bidding is that the principal is back in control; they may go a little further than the agent would have been authorized to go. It's a different way of doing commerce in 2020, but we're all learning how to play with technology and get the best benefit out of it.”

Concrete Rose, a 4-year-old daughter of Twirling Candy out of Solerina, by Powerscourt (GB), was consigned as a racing or broodmare prospect by Lane's End, agent for Ashbrook Farm and BBN Racing. Trained by Rusty Arnold, Concrete Rose won six of seven starts, including the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks Invitational, G2 JPMorgan Chase Jessamine, G3 Edgewood Presented by Forcht Bank and G3 Florida Oaks, and earned $1.2 million.

“I didn't want to go quite that high, but honestly I didn't think I'd touch her below $2 million,” Best said about the purchase. “She's a beautiful horse and you can't take away that record from her. I'm just thrilled to have her. I have admired Concrete Rose for a long time. I have a multiple Grade 1 winner, Cambier Parc, and Concrete Rose beat her and I said, 'Wow, what a horse.'”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Indian Miss, an 11-year-old daughter of Indian Charlie, was consigned by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, agent. Best said he planned to breed Indian Miss to Instagrand, a son of Into Mischief he raced to a Grade 2 win and a Grade 1 placing. Instagrand enters stud in 2021.

“That's my strategy: Try to get Instagrand going, and hopefully we'll get a nice Into Mischief foal, too,” Best said.

Narvick International paid $1.85 million for Cherokee Maiden, a 3-year-old daughter of Distorted Humor from the family of 2020 Japanese Triple Crown winner Contrail and Saturday's TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance winner Essential Quality. Consigned by Bedouin Bloodstock, agent, as a racing or broodmare prospect, Cherokee Maiden is out of champion Folklore, by Tiznow.

In the day's highest price for an internet sale, K I Farm purchased Grade 1 winner Ollie's Candy, who ran in Saturday's Breeders' Cup Distaff, for $1.65 million. Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, consigned the 5-year-old daughter of Candy Ride (ARG), who was cataloged as a racing or broodmare prospect.

“I thought she would bring that with the way the market has been going on high-end mares,” said Mark Taylor, Taylor's Made's Vice President of Marketing and Public Sales Operations. “She was only about 3 lengths off winning three additional three Grade 1 (races). If she had won a couple more that she had rough trips in, she could have brought twice that.”

Ollie's Candy was cataloged to last year's November Sale but was withdrawn from the sale and resumed her racing career in 2020. She ran in six graded stakes this year and placed in seven of them, including Keeneland's G1 Juddmonte Spinster.

“(Breeders and owners Paul Eggert and Karen Eggert) got to have a whole other year of racing her, and you can't put a price on that,” Taylor said. “For them, it was definitely the best decision.”

With sales of $9.61 million for 29 horses, Taylor Made was the session's leading consignor.

Taylor Made also consigned Grade 1 winner Lady Prancealot (IRE), who sold for $1.6 million to Shadai Farm of Japan. Fourth in Saturday's Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf, the 4-year-old daughter of Sir Prancealot (IRE) was cataloged as a racing or broodmare prospect.

“I think we were expecting a strong showing today, and $1.6 million was a great result for everybody,” said Phillip Shelton, Racing Manager of co-owner Medallion Racing. “She's a 4-year-old and there is blue sky ahead. (Shadai is) going to breed her. If we couldn't get it done, we were happy to take her back and run her. We have to thank all of our partners for putting their faith in us.”

Two in-foal broodmares sold for $1.5 million apiece.

Spendthrift Farm purchased the first, Canadian champion and millionaire Holy Helena, who is carrying her first foal by Quality Road. Hidden Brook, agent, consigned the 6-year-old daughter of Ghostzapper who is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Holy Boss.

Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings paid $1.5 million for Houtzen (AUS), a multiple group stakes winner in Australia. A 6-year-old daughter of Australian sire I Am Invincible, the mare is carrying her first foal by Curlin. She was consigned by Woods Edge Farm, agent.

“She was a really brilliant 2-year-old in Australia – super fast,” Barbara Banke of Stonestreet said. “She was in foal to my favorite stallion, so what is not to like?”

Claiborne Farm, agent, paid $1 million for the racing or broodmare prospect Gingham. Consigned by Brookdale Sales, agent, Gingham is a stakes-winning 3-year-old daughter of Quality Road out of the Pulpit mare Chapel. The Grade 2-placed filly is from the family of Grade 2 winner Owsley.

Two weanlings sold for $600,000 to lead the session.

The first is a colt from the first crop of undefeated 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify who sold to Donato Lanni, agent. Consigned by Hunter Valley Farm, agent, he is out of the Mr. Greeley mare Groton Circle and is a half-brother to stakes winner Supreme Aura. The colt is from the family of Grade 2 winners Miss Isella and Sir Cherokee.

“He's pretty cool; he looked just like Justify,” Lanni said. “We bought him to race; I wanted to buy a nice Justify. He was an amazing racehorse. (The weanling) looked just like him.”

M.V. Magnier paid $600,000 for a son of American Pharoah who is a half-brother to multiple Grade 1-winning juvenile Jackie's Warrior. Beau Lane Bloodstock, agent, consigned the colt, who is out of Unicorn Girl, by A. P. Five Hundred.

Katsumi Yoshida of Northern Farm has purchased last month’s G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches winner Dream And Do (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) privately, Jour de Galop reports.

The deal was brokered by Emmanuel de Seroux of Narvick International, who said, “Dream And Do is a very pretty filly who is precocious with abundant class and speed, and she comes from an excellent maternal line. She will continue her career with [trainer] Frederic Rossi before retiring to Northern Farm in Japan. She matches perfectly the type of mare that Katsumi likes to have.”

Indeed, Yoshida enjoyed a purple patch over the winter with mares sourced from Japan; he purchased the dams of G1 Tenno Sho winner Fierement (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and triple Group 1 winner Admire Mars (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}) at Arqana’s December Breeding Stock Sale, and the dam of last year’s Japanese Horse of the Year Lys Gracieux (Jpn) (Heart’s Cry {Jpn}) was a private transaction. Yoshida has continued to be active at the top of the market at that sale, and his brother Teruya has also made a big splash for French-bred mares, his collection including Classic winners Avenir Certain (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}), La Cressonniere (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) and Stacelita (Fr) (Monsun {Ger}), who has already producing Japanese champion and Classic winner Soul Stirring (Jpn) (Frankel {GB}).

Dream And Do had been previously campaigned as a homebred by Haras Du Logis Saint Germain, having been led out unsold at €80,000 from Arqana’s August yearling sale. Out of the placed Librettist mare Venetias Dream (Ire), Dream And Do is from the family of Group 1-winning miler Charm Spirit (Ire) and influential broodmare Fanfreluche.
