Exciting young sires A'Ali (Ire), Caturra (Ire) and Stradivarius (Ire) will feature among the galaxy of stars on show at the 2024 Thoroughbred Breeders' Association Flat Stallion Parade at Tattersalls in Newmarket on Thursday, February 1.

The parade is typically limited to first- and second-year stallions, but breeders will have a wider range of sires to view this year with the invitation being extended to those whose advertised fee sits at £15,000 or less. Breeders who purchase a nomination will also be entered into a free prize draw thanks to a new incentive launched by Tattersalls in support of the parade, giving them the chance to win one of five complimentary foal entries at the 2025 December Foal Sale.

To be entered into the prize draw, breeders need to sign a service contract for one of the stallions within 24 hours of the parade. All of the stallions can be viewed from 11 a.m. in the sales ring, as well as in the Left Yard and Terrace Yard after the parade hosted by racing broadcaster Gina Bryce and Shirley Anderson-Jolag of Tattersalls.

Along with A'Ali, Caturra and Stradivarius, the stallion show will also feature El Caballo (GB), Lope Y Fernandez (Ire), Midnight Sands, Mutasaabeq (GB), Soldier's Call (GB), Twilight Son (GB) and Ulysses (Ire).

Tattersalls associate director and TBA trustee, Matt Prior said, “We are delighted to be once again supporting the TBA Flat Stallion Parade and the revised format along with the new incentive scheme we are offering alongside the TBA will hopefully encourage breeders to come along and purchase a nomination.”

TBA chief executive, Claire Sheppard added, “It is important for us to continuously enhance what we do to support the British thoroughbred breeding industry, especially at this current time. The Flat Stallion parade is a key event which offers a great opportunity to promote an array of British-based stallions to breeders and to suit all mares and budgets. We are very grateful to all those studs bringing stallions along as well as Tattersalls for their ongoing support of the event.”

Pleasant Acres Stallions welcomes to their roster 'TDN Rising Star' and GISW Doppelganger (Into Mischief) who will stand in 2024 for $10,000 LFSN, the Florida farm said in a release Thursday morning.

“Doppleganger exudes class in every sense. He's an eye-catching individual with more natural power and strength than his namesake Authentic. Commercially, he gives breeders an excellent chance to get a proper ROI, especially with the precocious nature of the broodmare base in Florida,” said Tom Ryan.

A $570,000 Fasig-Tipton Selected Showcase yearling, Doppelganger is out of the Quiet American mare Twice the Lady–a stakes winner and multiple stakes placed performer. His second dam, Catherine's Crown (Chief's Crown) is the dam of Michelle's Crown, who produced Louisiana Champions Day Turf S. and Louisiana Showcase Turf S. winner Snakebite Kit.

Once at the races, the Bob Baffert trainee broke his maiden on debut as a juvenile with a performance that awarded him the coveted TDN title for his 3 1/2 length win at Los Alamitos. He became his sire's 29th 'Rising Star'.

“When we saw him at the sale the whole team, Bob [Baffert], Tom [Ryan], and myself, agreed he was an absolute must have,” said Donato Lanni. “I am looking forward to seeing his babies hit the sales in a couple of years.”

At three, Doppelganger finished as the runner-up in the GII San Felipe S. at Santa Anita, and as a 4-year-old he captured the GI Carter H. at Aqueduct as well as the Battery Park S. at Delaware Park.

“A TDN Rising Star by Into Mischief has arrived in Florida for our breeders,” said Pleasant Acres Stallions Owner Joe Barbazon. “Bred on the same crossover Fappiano-line mares as Champion and MGISW Covfefe and GSW Maximus Mischief, we are confident he will make an impressive impact on future Florida crops.”

Pleasant Acres's newest addition will join the likes of MGISP and G1SP Gunnevera (Dialed In) at the 220-acre farm located just northwest of Ocala.

Practically unbeatable on Newmarket's Rowley Mile, Shadwell's Mutasaabeq (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) made all to annexe back-to-back renewals of the G2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Joel S. on Friday and gain a fifth success from six visits to his favourite venue.

Always happy on the front end with the bias firmly for front-runners, the Charlie Hills-trained homebred son of Ghanaati (Giant's Causeway) had to work late to deny two others who have likewise been around the block but remain just shy of the very top.

They are the Freemason Lodge favourite Regal Reality (GB) (Intello {Ger}), who for some time up the rising ground to the line threatened to ruin the party for the 11-4 favourite, and the imperturbable Chindit (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) but their combined doggedness and three-pound advantage over the penalised winner was not enough. By hard-fought head and half-length margins, Mutasaabeq saw them off to add to his Suffolk tally which also includes the rescheduled G2 Sandown Mile in May, a 2-year-old novice contest and conditions event the following season in which he gained TDN Rising Star status. The returning Maljoom (Ire) (Caravaggio) was never able to land a blow and finished fifth.

“This was right up there with his best,” jockey Jim Crowley said. “He loves it here, he likes to get rolling between the three and the two and where he has folded in the past, in fairness when they came to him he kept fighting and toughed it out well.”

Charlie Hills added, “It is a case of horses for courses and he has got a tremendous record at the Rowley Mile. I think when he wins he puts a lot into it and so he can't put too many races together, although he is a little bit older now and a bit stronger.”

“When he won here as a 3-year-old, he looked unbeatable and he was not far off favourite for the 2000 Guineas just off winning a conditions race. He has been pretty sound through his career, but he has not had too many chances at Group 1 level. I've always felt he is up to it and I'll speak to Angus [Gold] and Sheikha Hissa, but we could have a look at America for the [Breeders' Cup] Mile–that could be an option.

“What do you do with a horse that has won three Group 2s? He is a good miler and he likes fast ground. I'm sure he will handle the journey and he only needs to improve a couple of lengths with the travel and the conditions and you never quite know. A track like this tests his stamina, but a two-turn mile at Santa Anita will suit him ideally.”

Pedigree Notes

Following on from Thursday's G3 Tattersalls S. win of his relative Alyanaabi (Ire) (Too Darn Hot {GB}), Mutasaabeq adds another chapter to the remarkable story of his third dam Height Of Fashion (Fr) (Bustino {GB}). A son of the aforementioned G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation S. heroine Ghanaati, he shares his second dam Sarayir (Mr. Prospector) with Alyanaabi and is therefore linked to the operation's current and very recent Sea The Stars (Ire) luminaries Baaeed (GB) and Hukum (Ire) and past greats Nashwan and Nayef.

Invincible Spirit's sire line also shows up in the family's G3 Cumberland Lodge S.-winning sire Mawatheeq by Danzig, the G2 Queen Mary S. winner and 1000 Guineas-placed Maqaasid (GB) by Green Desert and the GII New York S. winner Makderah (Ire) by Danzig's Danehill. Ghanaati also produced the G3 Mahab Al Shimaal scorer Wafy (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and the Royal Hunt Cup winner Afaak (GB) by Green Desert's son Oasis Dream (GB).

After missing the G2 Hardwicke S. at Royal Ascot due to fast ground, Shadwell's Hukum (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) is expected to make his next start in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. July 29. Victorious at the Royal meeting last season in the G1 Coronation Cup, the 6-year-old returned after almost a year on the sidelines following a hind leg fracture to defeat Derby hero Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) in May 25 G3 Brigadier Gerard S.

“Hukum will run if and when we get some rain,” confirmed Shadwell's racing manager Angus Gold. “It was a touch and go situation Saturday. We were longing to run him, but [trainer] Owen [Burrows] just felt in the end that, while we could run him and he could win it, he might come back a bit sore after it and we'd all look silly.”

He continued, “We kept him in training and spent a lot of time getting him right again after his injury last year and he just felt it was too big a risk. It is frustrating but sensible.

“Very much the idea is the King George. If the ground was good or even if it was good to firm, we might have to take a chance. That's the big day. We will see how we are going nearer the time.”

Gold also confirmed that G1 Prince of Wales's victor Mostahdaf (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) will miss next week's G1 Coral-Eclipse S., a race that has been earmarked for G1 Prix d'Ispahan winner Anmaat (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}).

“Mostahdaf has come out of it very good, said Gold. “I spoke to [trainer] John Gosden [Saturday] and he says he is bouncing.”

“The Eclipse is off the cards for Mostahdaf. We still have Anmaat in, ground permitting. If he's in good form and conditions look suitable, hopefully, we will go there with him.”

“I think we will be sitting still with Mostahdaf and, hopefully, get him to York in the same form in August.”

Listed winner Al Asifah (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who finished sixth after being supplemented to Thursday's G2 Ribblesdale S., will also be given some time off, according to Gold.

“We'll give her a break now and get her back in the autumn,” he said. “I still think she will be a very nice filly. We haven't even discussed targets. We will give her some gentle downtime, three weeks or so, then bring her back and take it from there.”

Dual Group 2 winner Mutasaabeq (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) will also be given a freshener following an eleventh in the GI Queen Anne S. Tuesday. Victorious in the G2 bet365 Mile at Newmarket May 5, the 5-year-old came home fifth in Newbury's G1 Lockinge S. May 20.

“We'll see what there is for him, but we will just give him a bit of time now,” he explained. “He's had three runs relatively quickly, but he's the sort of horse who could easily come out and win another Group 2 later in the year.”

Shadwell's 5-year-old entire Mutasaabeq (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}–Ghanaati, by Giant's Causeway) was rewarded for his consistency in pattern-race company with a course-and-distance win in September's G2 Joel S. and, penalised three pounds for that success, made a winning seasonal return in Friday's rescheduled G2 bet365 Mile at Newmarket. Racing on the front end after a slick getaway, the 4-1 chance poached a decisive advantage approaching the quarter-mile marker and kept on powerfully under continued urging inside the final furlong to easily account for MG1SW G1 Irish 2000 Guineas hero Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) by three lengths.

“He was supplemented for the [G1 2000] Guineas as a 3-year-old, so he's always been a good horse,” said trainer Charlie Hills. “He's got a good record here and I'm delighted with the way he's put it to bed, especially given he had the penalty to carry as well today. The blinkers seem to have helped him and we'll have to look at the [May 20 G1] Lockinge now. He's beautifully bred, being by Invincible Spirit out of Ghanaati, so that will have done him no harm today. It's obviously a week shorter now than it would have been between this and the Lockinge, had it been run at Sandown, but I think he should be fine.”

Pedigree Notes

Mutasaabeq is the sixth of seven foals out of G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation S. heroine Ghanaati (Giant's Causeway) and the March-foaled homebred is a half-brother to G3 Mahab Al Shimaal winner Wafy (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). Ghanaati is one of three black-type winners produced by dual stakes winner Sarayir (Mr. Prospector), herself a daughter of MGSW matriarch Height Of Fashion (Fr) (Bustino {GB}).

Allowed free rein on the lead in Friday's G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Joel S., Shadwell's Mutasaabeq (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) was able to turn that tactical edge to full advantage as he made all under a perfectly-crafted Jim Crowley ride.

Sent off the 5-2 second favourite returning to the scene of his seven-furlong conditions success at last April's Craven meeting which saw him earn 'TDN Rising Star' status, the Charlie Hills-trained son of Ghanaati (Giant's Causeway)–who had subsequently been brought down to earth on several occasions including when a latest underwhelming fourth in Goodwood's G2 Celebration Mile Aug. 27–was in his element from the outset as the 5-4 market-leader Tempus (GB) (Kingman ({GB}) blew the start. Keeping on up the rise to the line, the homebred who was fitted with blinkers for the first time had 3/4 of a length to spare over El Drama (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), with the same margin back to Tempus in third.

“He had a nice easy time of it in front and he has won here twice before, so he obviously likes it.” Hills said of the winner, whose previous best efforts were second placings in the Apr. 22 G2 Sandown Mile and the July 9 G2 Summer Mile at Ascot. “He's in the [G2] Challenge S. in a couple of weeks, so we'll see how he is. He's run two mediocre races at Goodwood so probably won't go back there again, while at Sandown he was a little unlucky. He's a very sound horse and it's nice to win a race like this with him.”

Ghanaati's finest hour came over this course and distance for Barry Hills in the 2009 1000 Guineas, before she added the G1 Coronation S. to her tally at Royal Ascot and she was also second here in the G1 Sun Chariot S. Her son Wafy (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) was successful in the G3 Mahab Al Shimaal, while she is also responsible for the Hunt Cup winner Afaak (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). The second dam Sarayir (Mr. Prospector), who also captured the Listed Oh So Sharp S. on this track, also supplied the sire Mawatheeq (Danzig) who ran second in the G1 Champion S. when it was staged here and Rumoush (Rahy) who took the Listed Feilden S. at the Craven meeting before running third in the Oaks.

Others from the illustrious family to have achieved something notable on the Rowley Mile include Maqaasid (GB) (Green Desert), who was third in the 1000 Guineas and G1 Cheveley Park S., Raheen House (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) who took the G3 Bahrain Trophy, Born With Pride (Ire) (Born To Sea {Ire}) who annexed the Listed Montrose Fillies S. on debut and one of its great celebrities Nashwan who had one of his many moments in the sun in the 2000 Guineas in 1989. Ghanaati's 3-year-old colt Maghlaak (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) promises to be at least a smart handicapper, having doubled his tally at the Goodwood track that his half-brother is so uneasy at earlier this month.

Earning compensation for respectable efforts in the top league, Michael Pescod's Chindit (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) battled to a typically game success in Saturday's G2 Fred Cowley MBE Memorial Summer Mile at Ascot. Third in the May 14 G1 Lockinge S. at Newbury and fourth in the G1 Queen Anne S. at Royal Ascot June 14, the 85-40 second favourite was in shallower waters here and took to the lead early to establish his presence. Looking likely to surrender as the 7-4 favourite Mutasaabeq (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) edged ahead over a furlong from home, the Richard Hannon trainee rallied for Pat Dobbs to wrest back the advantage late on and score by a head. “He is relaxing a bit better and he is finishing his races off,” the winning rider said. “He used to be a little bit headstrong. He kept plenty in the tank and I always thought he would get ten, so we'll see.”

First coming to prominence at this venue when taking the Listed Pat Eddery S. as a juvenile, Chindit went on to win the G2 Champagne S. at Doncaster later that term and although he added the G3 Greenham S. to his tally the following Spring he was unable to make a serious impact in four attempts at the highest level. Back with purpose in 2022 with a fluent score in the Listed Doncaster Mile Mar. 26, the bay had continued to provide honest service to connections by sticking as respectably close to Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) as possible at Newbury and Royal Ascot.

Pescod is keen to take on the Shadwell rocket once again. “I have a nose-bleed now,” he quipped. “I am in territory I don't understand. I have never had a group one winner and if you tell me where Baaeed is going to go, I will tell you if this is the horse who could be the first. We are entered at Goodwood and we have to do it really. We are not going to duck him. He is certainly one of the best horses I have owned.”

Now a 7-year-old, Godolphin's Benbatl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) still has relatively few miles on the clock as he launches his 2021 campaign in Saturday's G2 tote Celebration Mile at Goodwood. With nine pattern-race victories on his portfolio including the 2018 G1 Dubai Turf, G1 Grosser Dallmayr Preis and G1 Ladbrokes S., he has been in the wilderness since finishing third defending his title in the G2 Joel S. at Newmarket in September. “Benbatl had a nice break earlier in the season and we decided not to take him out to Dubai because he had a hard season last year,” Saeed bin Suroor explained. “This looks a good race for him over a trip that suits. He has been going well at home and is ready to get his campaign started, although we expect him to come on for his first run in almost a year.” Regular partner Oisin Murphy is reunited with the veteran and added, “I love the horse and he seems in really good shape. He's very healthy and very generous in his gallops. I know he's been off for a while and you'd expect him to improve for the run, but he's a superstar and at his best he'll take a lot of beating. I can't tell you how much I adore the horse. He was my first Royal Ascot winner, I rode him in the Derby when he didn't stay but some of his figures throughout his career have been outstanding.”

Shadwell's TDN Rising Star Mutasaabeq (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) goes back up in class having finished seventh in the G1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket May 1 and 16th on testing ground that hampered him in Royal Ascot's G3 Jersey S. June 19. Either side of those efforts are two good-ground conditions wins by a cumulative margin of 10 lengths over seven furlongs at Newmarket Apr. 13 and Haydock July 16 and this should fill in more of the gaps for this unknown quantity. Fellow 3-year-old colt Chindit (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) has yet to recapture the momentum of his G2 Champagne S. win in September, but his four starts this term show that he is at least a solid performer at a certain level. Michael Pescod's bay stuck with Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and co when fifth in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville Aug. 15 and trainer Richard Hannon is hoping he can get back on track here. “He's been running okay. He's looked just slightly below that very top level, he's finished fifth in three group 1s in a row but he's run with huge credit, the last race particularly,” he said. “Maybe he didn't stay that last half-furlong. An easy mile should be right up his street, there's no Poetic Flare, there's no Palace Pier. He's been running in the very top mile races and this is a good chance for him.”

Goodwood's action also includes the seven-furlong G3 tote Prestige S. for juvenile fillies, with Godolphin's John and Thady Gosden-trained Tinderbox (GB) (Farhh {GB}) taking aim at the race Nannina (GB) (Medicean {GB}) captured in 2005. Her 2 1/2-length defeat of Friday's winner and TDN Rising Star Silk Romance (Ire) (Shamardal) over this trip at Kempton Aug. 11 entitles her to respect taking on proven group performers. They include Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum's Aug. 3 G3 Prix Six Perfections third Daneh (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) from the Simon and Ed Crisford stable and the daughter of Rizeena (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) could have plenty more to come.

Thursday to Friday at Royal Ascot was like chalk and cheese and now that the meeting has become chopped in two by the unprecedented rainstorm there is only need for mudlarks to apply for Saturday's finale. Just as David Ward's Primo Bacio (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}) was pulled out of the G1 Coronation S. on Friday, so there must be a major doubt as to whether his Starman (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) will be allowed to take part in Saturday's G1 Diamond Jubilee S. Looking the one to beat before the deluge, the May 12 G2 Duke of York S. winner came unstuck on testing autumn ground in the G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint S. and even though this type of heavy surface may differ in its nature it will still compromise his best qualities. Trainer Ed Walker cast major doubts on his participation on Friday.

“I think it's pretty unlikely he will run,” he said. “His only defeat so far came on soft ground here last year. It's frustrating, as not only is it a lovely opportunity at Royal Ascot, but some of the other races he might go for, like the Maurice de Gheest and the Sprint Cup at Haydock, are often run on soft ground so it's frustrating to lose a summer target to freakish weather. We've just got to hope the weather improves and it dries up now. He is entered in the [G1] July Cup [at Newmarket July 10], so that is an option if the ground dried up.”

Deep ground is no deal-breaker for Saeed Suhail's Dream of Dreams (Ire) (Dream Ahead), as he showed when winning the G1 Haydock Sprint Cup in September following his seven-length romp in the seven-furlong G2 Hungerford S. at Newbury the previous month. Beaten a head in each of the last two editions of this race and in front a stride after the line in both, the Sir Michael Stoute-trained veteran appeared as sprightly as ever when taking the Listed Leisure S. over this trip at Windsor May 17 and if he can make it third time lucky it will be one of the stories of the week. “He's going very good at home. He couldn't be better, you just don't know about the draw [in three] but with 14 runners it shouldn't make much difference,” the owner's racing manager Bruce Raymond said. “He's working very well and he couldn't be better.”

Third in the Silver Wokingham H. over this course and distance at last year's meeting, Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum's Nahaarr (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) has subsequently made major strides to become a burgeoning top-flight sprinter. Successful on good-to-soft in the Ayr Gold Cup in September, he was just a neck behind behind Starman and 3 1/4 lengths in front of Tuesday's G1 King's Stand S. winner Oxted (GB) (Mayson {GB}) in the Duke of York. Trainer William Haggas said, “He ran a very good race in the Duke of York. I think he might be a little bit better with a bit of cut in the ground. If they go fast and he can wait a bit, I think he'll come home well.”

Testing ground is the order of the day for the British Champions Sprint S. hero Glen Shiel (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), who put up a creditable comeback performance when fourth under a penalty in the G3 Greenlands S. at The Curragh May 22. He is closely matched with Moyglare Stud's acquisition Sonaiyla (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), having had her back in second in last year's G3 Phoenix Sprint S. also at The Curragh. Although the mare was only 10th beaten him on Champions Day, she was a place ahead of him when third in the Greenlands on better weight terms and has since taken the G3 Ballyogan S. back at that venue June 2.

Hambleton Racing's Simon Turner said of Glen Shiel, “Obviously we welcome the rain at Ascot and he's in great condition at home. He's come on for his reappearance run in Ireland and we couldn't be happier with him. It was testing ground when he won there in the autumn and while he handles it, I don't think he needs it. It probably just doesn't inconvenience him as much as some of the others. We are excited to run him and I think plenty of people will latch on to Glen as he has that soft-ground form–he certainly deserves to be in the conversation.”

King Power Racing's Art Power (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) took the inaugural Palace of Holyroodhouse H. here 12 months ago before adding the G3 Lacken S. to his tally at Naas in July. Knocking on the door when fourth in the Haydock Sprint Cup and in the Champions Sprint back here, he should fare better than when sixth on his comeback in the Duke of York.

Preceding the Diamond Jubilee is the G2 Hardwicke S. over a mile and a half, where Christopher Wright's G1 Prix de Royallieu and G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S. heroine Wonderful Tonight (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) looks to have everything in her favour now that the heavy rains have come. Rapidly-improving last term, the bargain buy has trainer David Menuisier understandably excited ahead of her 4-year-old campaign but he is not expecting fireworks here. “She should really enjoy the conditions, the trip and ground are perfect but she's running against race-fit, really good horses so we will go there respecting everybody and bearing in mind she is only 85 per-cent fit,” he said. “We want her to peak later on in the season. That doesn't mean she won't put up a lovely performance but I'm just saying, due to her exuberant style as well, she might want to do a bit much too early. The Arc is her big aim this year and there are so many big races towards the end of the season, so it makes no sense to have her at 100 per-cent first time out. In saying all this, it may be compensated by the fact she's highest-rated and loves the ground–we'll find out in the race!”

Aidan O'Brien initially had four engaged, but has scratched the Galileo (Ire) duo of Tiger Moth (Ire) and Mogul (GB), leaving the latter's full-brother Japan (GB) and Ryan Moore's pick Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}) to represent the stable. Broome, who has proven versatile in terms of ground, is as consistent as they come and carries no penalty for his success in the 10-furlong G2 Mooresbridge S. at The Curragh May 3. Denied on the bobber by Helvic Dream (Ire) (Power {GB}) in the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup staged on a testing surface over an extra half-furlong back there 20 days later, his ability to handle this ground was proven back in 2019 when he enjoyed one of his career-best moments on it when beating Sovereign (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) by eight lengths in the G3 Ballysax S. at Leopardstown.

“We have a very strong hand in here and all have winning chances at their best,” Moore said. “Broome comes here on the top of his form and he was only a short head away from making it four from four this season in the Tattersalls Gold Cup last time. This has been the first time he has stepped up to a mile and a half this term and that could easily bring about improvement in a horse beaten in a four-way photo for the Derby. He has a very solid look to him here and he should handle conditions better than most.”

Shadwell's Hukum (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) took the G3 Geoffrey Freer S. over an extended 13 furlongs on good-to-soft at Newbury last August and did handle going that was officially soft when taking Goodwood's Listed Tapster S. over this trip May 22, but whether he wants it this extreme is unknown. Boasting course-and-distance winning form at last year's Royal meeting, having come out on top in the King George V H. when Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) was third, the homebred faces a test of his ability here.

That William Haggas has opted to let Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum's winning machine Ilaraab (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) take his chance in this elite company speaks volumes. Looking ready for such an examination when scoring by three lengths in a competitive handicap over just short of this trip at York May 12, he was making it six on the bounce there and it is difficult to put a ceiling on his progress at present. “Ilaraab is rated 111 now and the other opportunity was the [Listed] Fred Archer at Newmarket next weekend. I'd have preferred to go listed and then group three coming out of handicaps and I think he's better left-handed as well, but he's in good form,” his trainer said. “He's a very interesting horse. He worked well this week with Addeybb so he's got talent, but who knows.”

In the seven-furlong G3 Jersey S., Godolphin's Creative Force (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) takes the next step up the ladder having taken every challenge in his stride so far in 2021. He beat Thursday's Britannia H. winner Perotto (GB) (New Bay {GB}) on good-to-firm in a six-furlong handicap at Newmarket May 1 before following up in the Listed Carnarvon S. over that trip on good-to-soft at Newbury May 15 and could still be progressing. He is joined by fellow Charlie Appleby-trained Naval Crown (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who beat Master of the Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the Feb. 25 Listed Meydan Classic before coming back to Europe to be second to Tactical (GB) (Toronado {Ire}) in Newmarket's Listed European Free H. over this trip Apr. 14. Fourth when ridden from the front in the G1 2000 Guineas back there May 1, it is no surprise that William Buick has opted to ride him.

“Naval Crown produced an excellent run in the 2000 Guineas and dropping back to seven furlongs will suit,” Appleby said. “A repeat of his Newmarket performance should make him a leading contender. Creative Force has proved very consistent over six furlongs so far this season and heads into this in good order. He won with some cut in the ground at Newbury last time and we are hopeful with his breeding that he will stay this distance.”

Sir Edmund Loder's unbeaten homebred Bellosa (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}) beat the re-opposing Fundamental (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in the Listed King Charles II S. over this trip at Newmarket May 15, but this ground is an unknown for her. There has to be a doubt that Shadwell's TDN Rising Star Mutasaabeq (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) will handle it testing, so impressive was he on Newmarket's fast Craven meeting ground when winning his conditions event at this distance Apr. 13. Only seventh in the Guineas, the son of Ghanaati (Giant's Causeway) may have to wait for another day to show his true ability.

Ballydoyle's Apr. 15 G3 Craven S. flop Khartoum (Pioneerof The Nile) put that behind him when beating the smart subsequent winner and this card's Golden Gates H. runner Visualisation (Ire) (No Nay Never) in a competitive mile handicap at Naas May 16. Ryan Moore is keen on his chances and said, “He was far too free for me in the Craven, but he showed his true colours when winning a decent handicap off a mark of 92 on soft ground at Naas last time and that was in spite of taking a fair bump coming out of the stalls. The second won next time and I think he deserves this step back up in grade. He has plenty of pace, so I think the return to seven furlongs will suit too and the rain may not be such a negative for him.”

There is a fascinating renewal of the Listed Chesham S. to open the card and the seven-furlong contest has become a staging post for Ballydoyle's Classic-bound colts of late. Churchill (Ire) scored in 2016 and Battleground (War Front) prevailed 12 months ago, so the pressure is on TDN Rising Star Point Lonsdale (Ire) (Australia {GB}) here. Successful by 5 1/2 lengths over this trip on yielding ground at The Curragh June 2, the full-brother to Broome looked a touch special there and his G2 Hardwicke-bound sibling has always been as effective with cut underfoot. “It sounds as if this has been the plan for a while and he certainly looks to have been very impressive when winning by a wide margin at the Curragh on his debut,” Ryan Moore said. “Whether or not he will handle these deep conditions, we will soon find out.”

Andrew Balding has already won the G2 Coventry S. and G3 Albany S. and his enviable 2-year-old crop is represented by Mick and Janice Mariscotti's May 21 soft-ground Goodwood novice scorer Masekela (Ire) (El Kabeir), while Charlie Appleby looks to follow his 2019 success with Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal) with New Science (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}). Making all in a Yarmouth maiden over this trip on debut May 28, he is re-opposed by The Queen's Reach For the Moon (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) who is bound to improve on that start emanating from the John and Thady Gosden stable. “New Science won well at Yarmouth and improved mentally for the experience,” Appleby said. “Ground conditions will obviously be very different here, but his pedigree suggests he might be fine on it.”

Also on the card is the six-furlong Wokingham H., where Tuesday's G1 King's Stand S. seventh King's Lynn (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}) backs up quickly to attempt to provide The Queen with a latest Royal Ascot winner. Again it is Ryan Moore in the saddle and he said, “He ran a great race when a close seventh in the King's Stand here earlier in the week and he would have got much closer had he any racing room up on the rail in the closing furlong or so,” he commented. “A reproduction of that run clearly makes him the pick of the weights off a mark of just 100 here. He has form on fast and soft ground, the extra furlong could even be a positive and he must have a leading chance if he handles the quick turnaround.”

King's Lynn gets five pounds from one of the talking horses of the moment in Chris Kiely Racing's Rohaan (Ire) (Mayson {GB}), who beat none other than Dragon Symbol (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}) in the G2 Sandy Lane S. at Haydock May 22 having won the G3 Pavilion S. over this course and distance Apr. 28. Ryan Moore rode David Evans' stable star on the latter occasion, so has a direct line to him in what could prove a fascinating encounter.

Shadwell's Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) is aiming to defend his G1 King's Stand S. title at Royal Ascot and is training well trainer Charlie Hills reports. The 7-year-old gelding is thriving at Hills's yard in Lamborne after recovering from a small fracture sustained in the off season. The bay was undefeated in three starts last term, beginning in with the King's Stand in June, followed by the July 31 G2 King George Qatar S. and the Aug. 21 G1 Coolmore Nunthorpe S.

“Battaash has been back with us a few weeks now,” said Hills. “He's been in training and did a nice swinging canter last week. We're very happy with him. He should get to Ascot. I can't see any reason why he wouldn't.

“Dane O'Neill is coming to sit on him tomorrow morning. He knows him very well so it will be interesting to see what he says.”

Battaash's stablemate Mutasaabeq (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who won a novice in October and doubled up at Newmarket in April, has emerged from his seventh-place finish in the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas in good order. Named a 'TDN Rising Star' off the back of his April effort, the colt will point to the G3 Jersey S. at Royal Ascot.

“He's absolutely fine. He came out of the race in good form. He's looking well and training nicely,” said Hills. “I'll speak to [racing managers] Angus [Gold] and Richard [Hills] to draw up a plan, but I'd say the Jersey looks favourite.”
