The highest-rated turf horse in a decade, Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}–Aghareed, by Kingmambo), will stand for £80,000 in his first season at Shadwell's Nunnery Stud in 2023. The winner of 10 of his 11 starts, including six consecutive Group 1s, he is joined under the Shadwell banner by G1 Sprint Cup hero Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire})–Pardoven {Ire}, by Clodovil {Ire}), who will also be standing his first season next year, at €15,000.

Stephen Collins, European bloodstock manager for Shadwell, said, “Baaeed's fee reflects his current status as the champion turf horse in the world for 2022 and also his impeccable race record and superb pedigree, being a direct descendant of Height Of Fashion (Fr), the dam of top-class performers Nashwan, Nayef and Unfuwain.

“The 135-rated Baaeed is a wonderful addition to the Shadwell stallion roster and we have been inundated with enquiries for nominations. We have been overwhelmed with the response from breeders from all over Europe and further a-field.”

Rated 121, Minzaal will stand at Shadwell's Irish base, Derrinstown Stud in Co Kildare.

Collins said, “At a fee of €15,000, we have no doubt that Minzaal will prove very popular with breeders. He's a strong, good-looking individual who was a very high-class 2-year-old and developed into an exceptional older sprinter, winning the Sprint Cup in devastating style. His immense talent combined with his superb attitude will stand him in very good stead for what we firmly believe will be an equally successful stallion career.”

The Nunnery Stud roster also contains crack miler Mohaather (GB), whose fee remains unchanged at £15,000 while first-season sire Tasleet (GB)'s fee has risen to £6,000 (Jan. 1, special live foal) from £5,000 in 2022. Bradsell (GB) (Tasleet {GB}) captured the G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot. Eqtidaar (Ire)'s fee remains at £5,000.

Collins added, “The forthcoming sales will see Mohaather's first foals sell at public auction, which will be exciting for us all. We have a number of very nice foals by him on the farm and very much look forward to seeing how his other progeny are received in the sales ring over the coming weeks.

“Tasleet's yearlings sold well at public auctions throughout the autumn, which is no surprise given Bradsell's success in the Coventry Stakes and other eye-catching performances from the sire's progeny in 2022. Eqtidaar's first yearlings through the ring have also been making their mark with his progeny realising up to 12 times his stud fee.”

Also based at Derrinstown Stud is Awtaad (Ire), whose fee has been kept unchanged at €5,000. Former Derrinstown stalwart Tamayuz (GB) has been pensioned, and former Derrinstown Stud resident King Of Change (GB) has been moved to Micheal Orlandi's Starfield Stud in Co Westmeath for the 2023 breeding season.

“I've very happy with her,” said Brook Stud's Dwayne Woods. “She's exactly what we were hoping for. She has great depth, is a good size and has a fantastic wide hip. She's very strong with plenty of bone, and she's also blessed with a gorgeous, quality head with fabulous markings.”

A group winner at two, three and four, Mohaather covered 146 mares in his first book and stands at Nunnery Stud for £15,000 this season.

Group 1 winner Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) has the first three mares he bred in foal, Shadwell Stud announced on Tuesday. Both the listed winner Seeharn (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) and Dixie Dreamer (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}), who is a half to stakes winner Blanche Dubawi (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), were pronounced in foal after being covered by the G1 Sussex S. hero. Mohaather commands £20,000 this term.

“It's always an exciting time of year and I was delighted to hear his first three mares had been scanned in foal,” said Shadwell Stud Director Richard Lancaster. “Mohaather has been a consummate professional in his new role–incredibly straightforward and easy to manage. He has a great temperament and is particularly laid back, which is always a huge help.

“He has a fantastic book of mares–a big thank you to all the breeders who have supported him–and is due to cover dual Group 1 winner Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) this week. At this early stage, it appears he's a very fertile horse and we look forward to a long and successful breeding season.”

The mating plans for the high-quality Shadwell broodmare band were announced by the stud on Monday. Nunnery Stud's four stallions, led by new recruit Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), will all be well supported by Shadwell.

Several top-flight winners are booked to the 2020 G1 Sussex S. victor, among them dual Group 1 winners Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), Ghanaati (Giant's Causeway) and South African multiple Grade 1 winner Majmu (Aus) (Redoute's Choice {Aus}). They are joined by Ghanaati's Rahy half-sister, the stakes winner and G1 Oaks third Rumoush, who already has foaled a trio of black-type scorers; two-time Grade 2 winner and multiple Grade 1-placed Nafaayes (Aus) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}); and the stakes-placed Asheerah (GB) (Shamardal), the dam of Classic hero and young stallion Awtaad (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}).

Eqtidaar (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) landed his best prize in Royal Ascot's G1 Commonwealth Cup and his first foals are hitting the ground this season. Shadwell is sending him the stakes-placed Tamadhor (Ire) (Arcano {Ire}) from the family of G2 Cherry Hinton S. victress Memory (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). Mudaaraah (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}), who struck at listed level, placed in the G3 Prestige S. and is out of a half-sister to outstanding European highweight Bahri (Riverman), will be bred to Tasleet (GB) (Showcasing {GB}). The three-time Group 1 runner-up's first foals are yearlings of 2021. Rounding out the quartet of Nunnery Stud stallions, champion sprinter Muhaarar (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) is the beau of choice for stakes winner Etaab (Street Cry {Ire})-also from the family of Bahri–and is just one of several mares headed to the sire of nine black-type performers.

Other Group 1 winners and producers from Shadwell's paddocks will go farther afield for their mates. G1 Prix Saint-Alary winner Tawkeel (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) and Ghanaati's daughter Alandalos (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) are both headed to Darley sire Dubawi (Ire). G1 Oaks and G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. victress Taghrooda (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) is booked to Lope de Vega (Ire). She is not the only mare to visit the Ballylinch supremo, with Group 3 striker and Group 1 placed Thawaany (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}), who is a half-sister to Classic winner Kew Gardens (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), also on Lope de Vega's dance card; as is stakes winner Mutebah (Ire) (Marju {Ire}), the dam of G2 Champagne S. runner-up Albasheer (Ire) (Shamardal).

A quintet of Shadwell mares will visit Juddmonte's Kingman (GB) at Banstead Manor Stud, with the recently retired five-time Group 2 winner and G1 Royallieu third Enbihaar (Ire) (Redoute's Choice {Aus}) leading the way. The other four mares are rounded out by G3 Sweet Solera S. heroine Tajaanus (Ire) (Arcano {Ire}); multiple group winner Tantheem (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}); G2 Blandford S. scorer Tarfasha (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}); and Nazeef's dam Handassa (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}).

Kingman's barnmate Frankel (GB) will also be patronised by some Shadwell mares including Tatweej (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), herself a half-sister to champion 3-year-old Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}); and Group 3 producer Rayaheen (GB) (Nayef), a daughter of G1 1000 Guineas heroine Natagora (Fr) (Divine Light {Jpn}).

A mare bound for the court of Sea The Stars (Ire) is Garmoosha (Kingmambo). A daughter of Oaks winner Eswarah (GB) (Unfuwain), she has already produced the highly progressive Group 3 winner Raabihah to the cover of the Gilltown Stud-based stallion. The other five mares to also visit Sea The Stars, include the Awtaad's half-sister Alghabrah (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}), listed winner Maqsad (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), and Tamayuz's half-sisters–Ettisaal (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Muhawalah (Ire) (Nayef). Mubhirah (GB) (Raven's Pass), a half-sister to Classic heroine Taghrooda, will also visit the Aga Khan stallion.

Dark Angel (Ire) will once again welcome G1 Cheveley Park S. third Maqaasid (GB) (Green Desert), who already has a juvenile colt and yearling filly by the son of Acclamation (GB).

In Ireland, Derrinstown Stud residents Tamayuz (GB) (Nayef), Awtaad, and incoming sire King of Change (GB) (Farhh {GB}) are also being supported by Sheikh Hamdan's broodmare band. Roster veteran Tamayuz welcomes Safwa (Ire) (Green Desert), who has already produced G1 Lockinge S. winner Mustashry (GB) (Tamayuz {GB}) on this same mating and the group-placed Munaaser (GB) (New Approach {Ire}), as well as her daughter Rabaabah (Ire) (Shamardal). Tamayuz, the sire of 22 black-type winners, will also cover G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Bethrah (Ire) (Marju {Ire}) and the stakes producer Masaafat (GB) (Act One {GB}), both of whom visited the 16-year-old last term.

Awtaad, the winner of the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas and whose oldest foals are 3-year-olds, will cover Group 3 winner Rawaaq (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). King of Change, the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. hero and G1 2000 Guineas runner-up, will be sent the winning Qaadira (Mr. Greeley), who hails from the extended family of prolific blue hen Height of Fashion (Fr) (Bustino {GB}).

Group 1 winner Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}-Roodeye {GB}, by Inchinor {GB}), one of four stallions on the Nunnery Stud roster in 2021, will stand for £20,000 in his first year. Retired to stud in August after securing group races at two, three and four, including the G1 Sussex S. the bay is a full-brother to MGSW Prize Exhibit (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), whose Galileo (Ire) yearling filly brought 2.8 million guineas during Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, as well as a half-brother to the dam of G1 Queen Anne S. hero Accidental Agent (GB) (Delegator {GB}).

Joining Mohaather is champion sprinter and group sire Muhaarar (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) at £10,000; G1 Commonwealth Cup victor Eqtidaar (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) at £5,000; and MG1SP Tasleet (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), also at £5,000. Eqtidaar’s first foals will arrive in 2021, while Tasleet’s oldest crop are yearlings next year.

“We are keen to support breeders through these challenging times for the bloodstock industry caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and we believe that Mohaather’s introductory fee of £20,000 represents excellent value,” said Shadwell Stud Director Richard Lancaster. “He’s a striking dark bay, with plenty of quality who is incredibly light on his feet. However, what really impresses me is how well he walks. He’s a superb mover, who covers an incredible amount of ground. If he can pass that walk on to his stock, breeders will be sitting pretty.

“We have also trimmed the prices for Muhaarar, Eqtidaar and Tasleet in light of the present economic situation. Muhaarar has supplied several exciting winners, while Eqtidaar proved popular in his first season at stud and Tasleet’s foals have sold very well which is most encouraging.”

The quartet are available for viewing at Nunnery Stud.

Group 1 winner Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}-Roodeye {GB}, by Inchinor {GB}) will stand at Nunnery Stud in 2021, Shadwell announced on Monday. The 2020 G1 Sussex S. hero was retired earlier this year after sustaining bone bruising in his near hind fetlock joint. A fee for the bay will be announced later.

Richard Lancaster, Shadwell Stud Director, said, “The entire team at Shadwell are delighted to be standing Mohaather at Nunnery. He put up arguably the best performance of any miler this year when defeating a top-class field in the Sussex S., backing up what was an ultra-impressive performance in the Summer Mile at Ascot. His explosive turn of foot will live long in the memory.”

Bred by Gaie Johnson Houghton, Mohaather was knocked down for 110,000gns to Shadwell at the 2017 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2. As a juvenile he won two of three starts, culminating in a score in the G3 Horris Hill S. at Newbury. Returning at three, the Marcus Tregoning trainee added another Newbury Group 3, this time the Greenham S. from two starts. In three 2020 appearances the 4-year-old delivered in his final two, taking the July 11 G2 Summer Mile S. and the G1 Sussex S. at Goodwood at the end of the month. The highest-rated son of Showcasing at 123, Mohaather retired in August with a mark of 8-5-1-0 and $371,699 in earnings.

Added Lancaster, “It’s important to remember Mohaather was also a group winner at two and three and he has the physical prowess to match his racecourse exploits. He is particularly attractive–a beautiful dark bay–and is an extraordinarily well-balanced individual with a superb walk. You can see how he generated that speed: he has a great hindquarter and second thigh.”

Mohaather, out of the SP Roodeye, is a full-brother to American MGSW & GISP Prize Exhibit (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), and a half to the SP Harbour Master (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) and the dam of G1 Queen Anne S. hero Accidental Agent (GB) (Delegator {GB}). Roodeye in turn is a half-sister to the G1 Prix Morny runner-up Gallagher (GB) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}), while under the third dam is the G2 Gimcrack S. victor Bannister (GB) (Inchinor {GB}). Dead Certain (GB) (Absalom {GB}), a European highweight from five to seven furlongs and the winner of the G1 Cheveley Park S., is also a member of the female family tracing to the winning Sirnelta (Fr) (Sir Tor).

With the delayed 2020 turf season now enjoying some kind of equilibrium, the pick of the season’s milers line up for one of the first category-defining moments in Wednesday’s G1 Qatar Sussex S. Of the older brigade, last year’s G1 St James’s Palace S. and G1 Prix du Moulin hero Circus Maximus (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is an outsider if the betting is to believed at present despite returning to add the June 16 G1 Queen Anne S. to his tally. Out of luck in the Queen Anne but highly impressive in Ascot’s G2 Summer Mile July 11, Shadwell’s Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) has put himself front and centre, while the 3-year-olds include the 2000 Guineas heroes Siskin (First Defence) and Kameko (Kitten’s Joy) and the promising Vatican City (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). This is a far cry from some of the weaker editions of recent times and puts the Goodwood feature back on centre stage where it belongs.

With no pacemaker in the field, it is likely that one of Ballydoyle’s Circus Maximus and Wichita (Ire) (No Nay Never) and possibly both will go forward from the outset. The former is used to forcing a battle, having denied Terebellum (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in a thriller at the Royal meeting last time, and his best chance will be to try and engage some way out and draw the sting from the likes of Siskin and Mohaather. Kameko, who stayed on past Wichita to take the G1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket June 6, is another who will probably not be ridden for pace in what is a fascinating tactical conundrum.

Kameko’s trainer Andrew Balding has no fears about any lasting effects of his effort when fourth in the July 4 G1 Epsom Derby and has spoken about the constitution of Qatar Racing’s flagbearer on several occasions. Being that this provides an automatic entry into the GI TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile, connections are keen to place a flag in that particular territory. “He won a Guineas over a mile, so it was always the intention to come back down in trip after the Derby,” he said. “I’m looking forward to it and I couldn’t be happier with him. It’s a very strong field, as it should be for one of the championship races of the summer.”

Oisin Murphy has the responsibility of weighing up tactics, but there are very few among his profession better-placed than him to do so. “I’m drawn in stall two next to Siskin, with Mohaather near in four as well. Circus Maximus normally goes forward and Aidan O’Brien could have the first three ‘in the run’ with Wichita normally forwardly-placed and Vatican City a strong stayer at the trip,” he summarised in his pre-race analysis. “This time of year is a good time to take on the older horses, given the weight allowance, and we’ll see what happens.”

Mohaather proved when beating San Donato (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) by 3 3/4 lengths in the Summer Mile that he stays a mile well and has retained all the class that trainer Marcus Tregoning hoped he would despite setbacks along the way. He is awaiting the contest with relish. “It’s not a biggish field and hopefully he’ll run very well,” he said. “In all honesty, it was quite an easy race for him [at Ascot], as it turned out. He cantered the next day and we’ve been happy with him since. It’s a tough order, but I don’t think we could have Mohaather any better and he deserves a crack at it. I don’t see why he won’t handle the track, because he’s a neat horse who travels well and has plenty of speed. Hopefully he’s going to run a big race.”

Khalid Abdullah’s Siskin answered his own doubters when taking the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas at The Curragh June 12 and he had 1 3/4 lengths to spare over Vatican City on that occasion. As the only unbeaten runner in the race, another first to his name will see him enter cherished company and trainer Ger Lyons can only wait and watch now. “On ratings we have to improve, it’s as simple as that–we think he has, but we won’t know until he runs,” he said. “He has to improve to even get close to some of these horses. He is working well at home, but he does need to improve. I think he’ll cope with the track, because he’s pretty straightforward. He’s a very professional horse and if he gets beat it’s because he’s not good enough.”

Aidan O’Brien’s trio are outside the first three in the market, positions not normally customary for representatives of Ballydoyle, and all are there on merit. Of Vatican City, he said, “The Irish Guineas was a funnily-run race–it just became a bit of a mess. It was a little bit of a non-event for Vatican City, who was also having his first run of the year after two very soft runs last year. He’s been to Epsom since and ran respectably, even though he didn’t stay. We think going back to a mile will suit him much better.”

“Circus Maximus will only ever just win–Ryan will tell you, that’s the way he is,” he added. “He’s a very solid miler and a very tough but lazy horse. At home he’d do the same thing, no matter what you work with him, so we don’t really know what his limit is. Wichita is really maturing and he’s a massive horse, so with every month that goes by he’s progressing. Hopefully they’ll all run well. Everyone wants to see the best horses in the race, as it means a lot more to a horse if they win it. It’s exciting that they’re all there and we’re really looking forward to it.”

Even San Donato cannot be discounted, as he was running for the first time since finishing third in the 2019 G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains last May when chasing home Mohaather at Ascot. “It’s been jolly frustrating that he’s only run twice in the last 20 months, but they’ve been two very good runs,” trainer Roger Varian said. “The winner won well at Ascot that day, but I was delighted with my guy–I thought it was a very good run against some solid group two opposition and I do anticipate him coming forward from that run.”

Goodwood’s only other black-type event is the G3 Markel Insurance Molecomb S., in which Michael O’Callaghan pitches the impressive July 22 Naas maiden scorer Steel Bull (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}). He encounters Amo Racing Limited’s June 20 G2 Queen Mary S. fourth and July 9 Listed Marygate Fillies’ S. scorer Sardinia Sunset (Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}) and several other fast and precocious types as he travels across the Irish sea. “He came out of Naas well and it was just like a piece of work for him really–it was no more than a half-speed and he quickened up very well,” O’Callaghan commented. “We’ve always thought a lot of him at home, so it was no surprise to see him win the way he did. I think he could be very, very good. He’s a very fast horse and he should he take a bit of beating, I hope.”

Juddmonte’s undefeated G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas hero Siskin (First Defence) and G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas Kameko (Kitten’s Joy), who represents Qatar Racing, lead the nine-strong G1 Qatar Sussex S. field at the latest entry stage on Thursday morning.

The duo are joined by fellow sophomores: MG1SP G2 Coventry S. winner Arizona (Ire) (No Nay Never), Irish 2000 Guineas runner-up Vatican City (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), and G3 Tattersalls S. hero and MG1Sp Wichita (Ire) (No Nay Never), all from Ballydoyle. Aidan O’Brien also sends 4-year-olds MG1SW Circus Maximus (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who won the G1 Queen Anne S. at Royal Ascot and GSW Lancaster House (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Marcus Tregoning fields MGSW Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) who leads the entries with a Racing Post Rating of 123. San Donato (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire})), runner-up to Mohaather in the G2 Summer Mile S. at Ascot earlier this month, will also take part. The lightly raced Roger Varian trainee won a 1200-metre listed event at Doncaster in the fall of 2018 and emerged from a 197-day break to complete the trifecta behind MG1SW Persian King (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) in the G1 French 2000 Guineas in May of 2019. The Summer Mile was his first appearance since and he appears poised to run well in this return to Group 1 company.

“Yes, absolutely,” said Varian, of San Donato on the idea of facing Mohaather again. “I think Goodwood will suit San Donato, and we’re looking forward to it. He’s come out of that Ascot Summer Mile bouncing, and I would anticipate in a nice bit of improvement–because that was his first run for 16 or 17 months. He’s an exciting horse for the rest of the year and beyond, I hope.”

Godolphin’s unbeaten Earthlight (Ire) (Shamardal), a winner of the G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S. as a juvenile, is a potential runner in the upcoming G1 Qatar Sussex S. at Goodwood on July 29. Although injury kept him from the G1 French 2000 Guineas, he resurfaced to take a listed race at ParisLongchamp the same day as Godolphin’s champion and MG1SW Pinatubo (GB) (Shamardal) claimed the G1 Prix Jean Prat. The one-mile feature is also the next likely target for G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas hero Kameko (Kitten’s Joy), G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas victor Siskin (First Defence), MGSW Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), and Circus Maximus (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who won 2019’s G1 St James’s Palace S. and G1 Prix du Moulin, as well as this term’s G1 Queen Anne S.

“We haven’t totally decided yet,” said trainer Andre Fabre. “He could go to Goodwood, but if not he will go for the G1 Maurice de Gheest [on Aug. 9]. He’s very fast and looks a real sprinter, but I’m convinced that he can go further. I think it was a good decision to split him and Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal) up last time and it will be up to Sheikh Mohammed where he runs.”
