Defending itself against contempt-of-court allegations for purportedly violating an under-dispute preliminary injunction order by imposing riding infraction penalties upon Jockeys' Guild members nationwide, the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act Authority (HISA) fired back in federal court Tuesday with a filing that stated the plaintiffs' argument “fails the straight-face test.”

At issue is the still-disputed nature of the wording in a July 26 injunction order out of United States District Court (Western District of Louisiana), which stated that HISA rules would be enjoined in two plaintiff states until a June 29 lawsuit got decided in that court, while also noting that, “The geographic scope of the injunction shall be limited to the states of Louisiana and West Virginia, and as to all Plaintiffs in this proceeding.”

The plaintiffs–most specifically, the Guild–believe that last line of the judge's words applies to “all of the members of the Jockeys' Guild, regardless of the U.S. jurisdiction in which the jockey is riding.”

The HISA defendants have maintained that individual members of the Guild are clearly not plaintiffs in the lawsuit, and to consider them that way “would wreak havoc on the sport.”

HISA had asked the court to provide a clarification of the wording, but had first appealed the preliminary injunction to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, which resulted in a stay being issued.

Now it appears as if the lodging of that appeal means no clarification will be forthcoming until the Fifth Circuit Court decides the matter it has been asked to consider, as per a separate order handed down early Tuesday evening by the district court.

“Because the Defendants have filed a Notice of Appeal before filing the Motion for Clarification of Preliminary Injunction Order, this Court does not have jurisdiction to clarify the Preliminary Injunction,” the Aug. 9 district court order stated. “The filing of a notice of appeal confers jurisdiction on the Court of Appeals and divests this Court over their aspects of the case as it rests before the Court of Appeals. Once jurisdiction has divested, this Court may not take any action that would alter the status of the case as it rests before the Court of Appeals.”

On Aug. 2 the plaintiffs, led by the states of Louisiana, West Virginia, and the Guild, had moved for a federal judge to issue an immediate order to enforce its injunction to keep Guild-member jockeys from being subject to HISA rules nationwide.

The plaintiffs also wanted the judge to make the HISA defendants explain to the court why they should not be held in contempt for “flagrantly violating this Court's injunction within a mere four days after this Court entered it.”

The Aug. 9 filing by HISA painted that dispute in a different light.

“Plaintiffs' contempt motion is beyond the pale,” is how the HISA filing started off.

“For starters, the Fifth Circuit has now stayed the preliminary injunction (PI) Order in substantial part, including as it relates to the riding-crop rules and other safety regulations that form the basis of Plaintiffs' motion,” the filing continued.

“In any event, until the Fifth Circuit's stay, the Authority complied fully with the PI Order as written. Indeed, the Authority's affirmative steps (out of an abundance of caution) to clarify the scope of the injunction contradict any suggestion that the Authority willfully flouted the Court's PI Order.”

The HISA filing continued: “The Authority complied fully with the PI Order even before the Fifth Circuit's stay orders. Plaintiffs do not contend that the Authority continued to enforce the enjoined HISA rules in either Louisiana or West Virginia (against anyone), or that the Authority continued to enforce the enjoined HISA rules against any actual Plaintiff (anywhere). And as the Authority has explained, the individual members of Plaintiff Jockeys' Guild (and other 'association plaintiffs') are not themselves 'Plaintiffs' to which the PI Order is expressly limited.

“There is good reason that the Order does not extend to all of Plaintiffs' thousands of individual members nationwide: That would transform the Court's limited preliminary injunction into the sort of expansive nationwide injunction that the Supreme Court and Fifth Circuit have sharply criticized, and it would wreak havoc on horseracing in every racing state [because some] jockeys would be subject to less protective rules (or perhaps no rules at all), while others remain subject to HISA rules.

“That is untenable,” the HISA filing summed up. “Yet Plaintiffs have offered no response to those critical legal and practical realities.”

In the Aug. 2 filing by the plaintiffs, three Guild-member jockeys (the California-based Drayden Van Dyke, plus Florida-based Edwin Gonzalez and Miguel Vasquez) were alleged to be plaintiffs who purportedly suffered new harms resulting from HISA's whip-rule enforcement that the Guild believed to be in contempt of the injunction order.

But HISA's response on Tuesday pointed out that the first two of those jockeys have yet to avail themselves of HISA's process to request stays pending appeals, and the third was never even formally penalized for the whip infraction that the Guild had alluded to in the court filing last week.

“Those jockeys have not suffered concrete harm for other reasons, too,” the HISA filing stated. “For example, the cited infractions for jockey Drayden Van Dyke (resulting in a 1-day suspension and $250 fine) would have violated California's own (pre-HISA) crop rules, and resulted in an even greater penalty. And no adverse ruling was even issued against jockey Miguel Vasquez.”

The 5 ½-furlong sprint for 2-year-old fillies will be highlighted in the Rainbow 6 sequence, which will span Races 4-9. The jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $300,000 Sunday at Gulfstream Park, where the popular multi-race wager went unsolved Saturday for the 11th racing day following a $461,035.47 jackpot payoff Oct. 9.

Last Leaf has an experience edge over her five rivals, having won three of six starts while demonstrating the versatility to win on both dirt and turf. The daughter of Not This Time, who broke her maiden on a fast main track in her second career start, will seek her third straight victory Sunday. She ran away with a six-furlong optional claiming allowance by 10 ¾ lengths over a sealed sloppy track Sept. 4 before scoring a narrow victory in the five-furlong Hollywood Beach on turf three weeks later.

“I asked for this race,” trainer Ronald Spatz said. “It will be fun to find out if she can win on four different surfaces. She's won on dirt, a sloppy track, and turf.”

Miguel Vasquez has the return mount.

“She's a nice little filly. She's got little feet; she's blocky; and she runs hard,” Spatz said. “She's a good little sprinter.”

Trainer Michael Stidham, who will maintain a division at Gulfstream for the first time during the Championship Meet, will be represented by Godolphin's Kit Keller, who is coming off a debut victory in a five-furlong maiden special weight race on turf at Laurel Sept. 9.

Edgard Zayas has the call on the homebred daughter of Ghostzapper.

The burgeoning turf-sprint star, who conceded between eight and 11 pounds to her five rivals, is a nose and a neck away from being undefeated in her six starts on turf following her length victory in Sunday's five-furlong overnight handicap for fillies and mares.

“She's a late-bloomer,” Dwoskin said. “She's been a different horse since getting on the turf.”

Choose Joy rated off a swift early pace set by Cat's Astray, who set fractions of :21.87 and :43.98 for a half-mile, before staging a three-wide rally into the stretch and drawing clear under Miguel Vasquez.

The 4-year-old daughter of Munnings ran five furlongs on a firm turf in :55.65. Hey High Pockets closed with a rush to finish second, a neck ahead of a tiring Cat's Astray.

David Braddy is no stranger to success in the tradition-rich FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes, far from it.

The veteran South Florida trainer saddled his fifth winner in the series for 2-year-olds sired by accredited stallions standing in Florida on July 31, when Champion Equine LLC's My Sassenach scored a 9 ¼-length triumph in the $100,000 Desert Vixen at Gulfstream. My Sassenach's victory came 30 years after Braddy last enjoyed success in the six-furlong first leg of the FSS series for fillies with Mystic Obsession in 1991.

Saturday, Braddy is slated to saddle My Sassenach for the $200,000 Susan's Girl at Gulfstream in hopes of winning the seven-furlong second leg of the FSS series for fillies for the first time since scoring with Staci's Toy, who won the first two legs in 1989 before finishing second in the third leg, the My Dear Girl.

“It's nice to have a nice horse again, no question,” said Braddy, who has saddled 1055 winners during a career that commenced in 1981.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Braddy saddled Sly Rajab for a victory in the 1998 Affirmed, but his four other FSS triumphs have come with fillies.

“I do like the fillies,” Braddy said. “It just seems like they try harder. I don't know if that's right or wrong, but I do like the fillies.”

There's a lot to like about My Sassenach in Saturday's Susan's Girl. The daughter of Uncaptured broke her maiden in the Desert Vixen with the authority that would seem to make the extra furlong of the Susan's Girl well within her range.

“There's always concern. We're hoping she can do it,” Braddy said. “This is a nice filly. I think she can handle the seven-eighths, but you never know until you run the seven-eighths. She has been doing good, so hopefully she does OK.”

My Sassenach launched her career with a second-place finish in a 5 ½-furlong maiden special weight race, after which it was determined that she raced with an undetected lung infection. The Florida-bred filly was obviously in perfect health for the Desert Vixen, in which she rated off the early pace before she made a three-wide sweep to the lead on the turn into the homestretch and drew away for a comfortable victory.

“She came out of the race good, and she's been training good here for this next race,” Braddy said.

Miguel Vasquez has the return call aboard My Sassenach in the Susan's Girl, which will co-headline Saturday's FSS program at Gulfstream with the $200,000 Affirmed, the seven-furlong open division.

Jacks or Better Farm Inc's Rachel Rock is scheduled to make her official debut in the Susan's Girl, although she came very close to making her first start in the Desert Vixen, only to run off riderless before the race and be scratched by the stewards.

“She's a half-way first-time starter. She's been saddled; she's been with the pony; and then she decided she didn't want to participate,” Nicks said. “We've been working with her in the morning. Hopefully, her little quirks are behind her. She seems to have quite a bit of talent. It's just timing. We'd like to have a race in her early on. Pedigree wise and this-and-that, we haven't gotten started as early this year.”

The daughter of Jess's Dream came back to register a five-furlong 'bullet' workout in 59.08 seconds.

“We're just trying to figure out what causes her little moments,” Nicks said. “She's very professional and laidback in general but then something sets her off. We're trying to figure out what that is.”

Samy Camacho has the call on Rachel's Rock, whose owner/breeder, Jacks or Better Farm, has a record 19 Florida Sire Stakes victories.

Trainer Roger Laurin's Demurely, who finished a distant second behind My Sassenach following a five-wide rally in the Desert Vixen, is set to return in the Susan's Girl. The daughter of Uncaptured entered the first leg of the FSS series off an impressive debut victory May 28.

Laurin homebred Veiled Prophet, a daughter of Uncaptured who has finished second in both of her career starts, will accompany Demurely in the starting gate.

Chantal Sutherland has the return mount aboard Demurely, while Luca Panici is scheduled to ride Veiled Prophet for the first time.

Shooting Star Thoroughbreds LLC's Noble Dreamer will return in the Susan's Girl after disappointing in the Desert Vixen with a troubled-but-distant fourth-place finish as the 7-5 favorite. The daughter of Noble Bird had previously broken her maiden impressively by 7 ¼ lengths at Gulfstream June 18 after a second-place finish behind Demurely in her debut.

Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. will also be represented in the Susan's Girl by Stefania Farms LLC's Spectacular Gal, a one-start maiden by Jess's Dream.

J.C. Diaz Jr. has the call on Noble Dreamer, while Edwin Gonzalez has been named on Spectacular Gal.

Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott has sent LNJ Foxwoods' Outfoxed to Gulfstream for the Susan's Girl. The daughter of Valiant Minister finished a distant third in a July 15 maiden special weight race at Saratoga in her only start.

Edgard Zayas has accepted the mount aboard the Florida-bred filly, who was purchased for $360,000 at the OBS April 2-year-olds-in-training sale.

CCF Racing Stable LLC's Dear Mama Mia and trainer Daniel Pita's Devilette will enter the Susan's Girl off strong second-out maiden scores.

Carlos David-trained Dear Mama Mia, a daughter of Chitu, withstood stretch-long pressure to prevail by a neck in an Aug. 1 six-furlong maiden special weight race at Gulfstream. Romero Maragh is scheduled to ride Dear Mama Mia for the first time.

Devilette romped to a 5 ¼-length score on August 13 for Pita, who saddled Princess Secret for victories in the Susan's Girl and My Dear Girl last year. Cristian Torres has the call aboard the daughter of Khozan.

Wendell Yates and Ronald Brown's Sequin Lady, a daughter of He's Had Enough who finished a close third behind My Dear Girl in her debut; and Angel Ruiz-Lozano's Lluvia, a five-race maiden by Handsome Mike; round out the field.

Stonehedge LLC's Gil and Marilyn Campbell collected their 16th success in the FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes series Saturday when Cajun's Magic edged stablemate Dean Delivers in the $100,000 Dr. Fager at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

“It's quite a thrill,” said winning trainer Michael Yates. “They've been such a big part in the Florida breeding industry. To be a part of the team is an honor, for sure.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

The Dr. Fager, a six-furlong open-division sprint, co-headlined Saturday's 13-race program with the $100,000 Desert Vixen, a six-furlong event for fillies won by My Sassenach, kicking off the 2021 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes, a tradition-rich series for juveniles sired by accredited stallions standing in Florida.

Cajun's Magic ($15) rallied from far off the pace to win a stretch duel with Dean Delivers by a neck to complete a Michael Yates-trained exacta in what turned out to be a two-horse race in the stretch.

“After they broke their maidens, Mrs. Campbell asked me which one I liked best. I said, 'Personally, at this point,' I feel like we have the exacta. I don't know which one's the best,” Yates said.

Saturday, Cajun's Magic proved the better Yates trainee by a very narrow margin in the Dr. Fager. Making his third start after finishing second in his debut and breaking his maiden by 4 ¾ lengths July 1, Cajun's Magic settled well off the pace under Jesus Rios, as Laki Lio set the pace along the backstretch, pressed by Hope in Him, the 8-5 favorite ridden by Samy Camacho, and Dean Delivers and jockey Miguel Vasquez. On the turn into the homestretch, Laki Lio and Home in Him began to falter as Dean Delivers took command and took the lead into the stretch. Cajun's Magic launched a three-wide drive on the far turn and quickly joined his stablemate, who was the 8-5 second choice in the wagering.

Cajun's Magic passed his stablemate in mid-stretch but was all-out to hold off a resurgent Dean Delivers approaching the wire. Gold Special rallied under Marcos Meneses to finish third, 10 lengths farther back. Home in Him checked in sixth of seven starters. Cajun's Magic ran the six furlongs in 1:11.01.

Both Cajun's Magic and Dean Delivers are sons of Cajun Breeze, who was owned and trained by Yates during his racing career in which he earned $246,000 the hard way while competing in allowance and stakes company in South Florida. Believing that the son of Congrats was a better horse than he showed on the racetrack, Yates took a leap of faith and stood him at stud upon his retirement in 2015. Cajun Breeze immediately proved to be a promising Florida stallion.

“It's pretty surreal. He's throwing some nice horses. I think the best is yet to come from him,” Yates said. “His first couple crops, he had some pretty small numbers from some pretty ordinary mares. Mr. and Mrs. Campbell have bought half of him and have bred a decent number of mares to him. The proof's in the pudding.”

The Florida Sire Stakes has a storied history dating back to 1982, when it was created by Ocala Breeder and owner Dan Lasater. The six-race series has produced six Eclipse Award champions: Awesome Feather (2010 Juvenile Filly), Big Drama (2010 Sprint), Holy Bull (1994 Horse of the Year and 3-Year-Old Male), Smile (1986 Sprint), Brave Raj (1986 Juvenile Filly), and Not Surprising (1995 Sprint Champion).

The Florida Sire Stakes series will continue Aug. 28 with the $200,000 Affirmed and the $200,000 Susan's Girl for fillies, both slated for seven furlongs, and Sept. 25 with the $400,000 In Reality and the $400,000 My Dear Girl for fillies, both to be run around two turns at 1 1/16 miles.

Champion Equine LLC's My Sassenach swept to the lead at the top of the stretch and drew clear for a dominating 8 ¼-length victory in the $100,000 Desert Vixen while taking her veteran South Florida trainer back to the FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes winner's circle following a long absence.

The Desert Vixen, a six-furlong sprint for fillies, co-headlined Saturday's 13-race program at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., with the $100,000 Dr. Fager, a six-furlong open-division dash, kicking off the 2021 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes, a tradition-rich series for juveniles sired by accredited stallions standing in Florida.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

My Sassenach ($21), who finished second in her July 1 debut, graduated in the Desert Vixen, giving trainer David Braddy his fifth career success in the Florida Sire Stakes series for juveniles sired by accredited stallions standing in Florida.

“It's good for me. I've won these races four or five times, but not recently,” said Braddy, who enjoyed FSS success with Stacy's Toy in the 1989 Desert Vixen and Susan's Girl, Mystic Obsession in the 1991 Desert Vixen, and Sly Rajab in the 1998 Affirmed. “It's good to be back with a nice filly.”

My Sassenach broke cleanly under Miguel Vasquez to gain a prime outside stalking position behind pacesetter Rufa Red Knot, who set fractions of :22.12 for the first quarter and :45.74 for the first half-mile. My Sassenach made a three-wide sweep to pull alongside the pacesetter leaving the turn into the homestretch and continued on to score comfortably and impressively.

“I thought she was a real good filly the first time we ran her. We worked her nine days in front of the race, scoped her, and she was clean. We ran her in that race and she scoped with a lung infection,” Braddy said. “I think that cost us the first race, but we've been high on her all along.”

Demurely closed from off the pace to finish second, three-quarters of a length behind a tiring Rufa Red Knot. Noble Dreamer, the 7-5 favorite in a field of eight fillies, finished an even fourth.

My Sassenach, who was purchased for $152,000 at the OBS April sale for 2-year-olds in training, ran six furlongs in 1:12.17.

“We liked the way she breezed at the sale and we liked the way she galloped out,” said Champion Equine LLC's Michael Sucher. “We have a lot of high hopes for her.”

Florida Sire Stakes action will continue Aug. 28 with the $200,000 Susan's Girl for fillies and the $200,000 Affirmed, both slated for seven furlongs, and Sept. 25 with the $400,000 My Dear Girl for fillies and the $400,000 In Reality, both to be run around two turns at 1 1/16 miles.

“I think the seven-eighths might be all right. I'm not so sure about the long [race],” Braddy said. “We'll just have to see.”

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $425,000 Wednesday at Gulfstream Park West in Miami Gardens, Fla.

The Rainbow 6 went unsolved for the 15th straight racing day Sunday, when multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $629.86.

The jackpot pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Big Thorn wins 'off turf' Juvenile Turf
Alex and Joanne Lieblong's Big Thorn benefited from a perfect trip, as well as the morning rains that forced turf races to be run over the sloppy main track, to score a dominating victory in Sunday's $60,000 Juvenile Turf at Gulfstream Park West.

The seven-furlong Juvenile Turf for Florida-bred 2-year-olds, which was originally scheduled to be run at a mile on the turf course, co-headlined Sunday's program with the $60,000 Millions Filly and Mare Turf for Florida-bred fillies and mares.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=23 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=177 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Big Thorn, a main-track-only entrant who had broken his maiden by five lengths in his previous start, raced in third behind dueling pacesetters Hot Blooded and Fulmini, who put up fractions of 22.99 and 45.77 seconds for the first half-mile. Jockey Paco Lopez made a three-wide sweep to the lead leaving the turn into the homestretch aboard the home-bred colt, who drew off to a notch a 4 ½-length victory.

Fulmini, who was ridden by Edgard Zayas, finished second, 9 ¼ lengths clear of Castle King. Big Thorn, the 2-1 favorite, ran seven furlongs in 1:23.23.

“We were fortunate that the race came off and it helped shortening up to seven-eighths. I didn't expect him to be quite as close as he was. Paco told me he put him into the race early but after that it was all over,” trainer David Fawkes said. “He had so much horse through the whole race. He really, really likes the horse. When he got off the horse he said, 'Damn, this is a nice horse.'”

Big Thorn finished second in his Sept. 26 debut at Gulfstream in an open maiden special weight race before dominating Florida-bred rivals back-to-back.

“He ran a little green last time, but this time much, much more professional. He acted up on the van coming over, he did a lot of things last time he ran that could have jeopardized him but it obviously didn't,” Fawkes said. “We'll just wait and look for the next spot, that's all. I don't like to look too far ahead.”

Windylea Farm LLC's Thissmytime ($11) relished the sloppy going while registering an easy victory in the Millions Filly and Mare Preview. Like Big Thorn, Thissmytime was a main-track-only entrant in the seven-furlong race that was originally scheduled for 7 ½ furlongs on turf.

Ridden by Joe Bravo, who captured the $60,000 Millions Turf Preview on Saturday's GPW card, Thissmytime closely tracked pacesetter Picara, who showed the way into the far turn after running the first quarter of a mile in 22.45 seconds. Thissmytime moved to the lead entering the turn into the homestretch during a 44.45-second half-mile and drew off powerfully and comfortably to register her first stakes victory.

The Kathleen O'Connell-trained 3-year-old daughter of Carpe Diem ran seven furlongs in a sharp 1:21.40. Starship Nala closed to finish clear of R Prerogative, the 9-5 favorite.

Miguel Vasquez rode four winners on Sunday's program, propelling him into a 39-39 tie with defending champion Edgard Zayas in the race for the jockey's title with three cards remaining in the Gulfstream Park West meet. Vasquez scored aboard Terry's Dream ($13) in Race 3, Lavi ($5.40) in Race 4, Walkoff ($5.20) in Race 5 and Itsmyluckygirl ($5) in Race 8.

However, Vasquez also completed his final day of riding at Gulfstream Park West and is scheduled to return to competition on Wednesday, Dec. 2, the opening day of the 2020-2021 Championship Meet.

Rohan Crichton, who saddled Itsmyluckygirl for her victory, holds a 17-15 lead over Antonio Sano in the race for the trainer's title. Saffie Joseph Jr., the defending titlist, has had 14 winners.

Princess Secret shook off an upset in the $100,000 Desert Vixen four weeks ago and a stretch-long bid Saturday by a relentless Oh Deborah to score a hard-earned victory in the $200,000 Susan's Girl, the second leg of the FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes for juveniles sired by accredited Florida stallions at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The Susan's Girl, a seven-furlong stakes for fillies, co-headlined Saturday's program with the $200,000 Affirmed, a seven-furlong open division, which were supported by the $75,000 Proud Truth, a mile turf stakes for 2-year-olds, and the $75,000 Sharp Susan, a mile turf stakes for juvenile fillies. All four stakes were included in the six-race sequence for the Rainbow 6 on a day when a mandatory payout was held.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Princess Secret, who finished second in the first leg of the Florida Sire Stakes Series as the even-money favorite for owner/trainer Daniel Pita, came through in the Susan's Girl, scoring by three-quarters of a lengths over Oh Deborah as the 6-5 favorite. The daughter of Khozan chased longshot pacesetter Lyrical during fractions of 22.64 and 45.22 seconds for the first half-mile before moving to the lead on the turn into the homestretch, only to immediately meet an outside challenge from Oh Deborah.

Princess Secret responded gamely to jockey Miguel Vasquez's urging to prevail over Oh Deborah, completing seven furlongs in 1:23.02.

“She's a very gutsy filly. She doesn't like to lose,” Pita said.

Making her first start since winning her July 19 debut by 3 1/4 lengths, Oh Deborah finished four lengths clear of third-place finisher Go Jo Jo Go.

Princess Secret, who was purchased for $30,000 at the 2019 OBS October sale, debuted at Gulfstream with an impressive four-length triumph May 7. The Florida-bred filly returned two months later to finish a close second against the boys in the first allowance race for 2-year-olds of the Spring/Summer Meet to earn favoritism while facing fillies in the Desert Vixen. She set an early pace before being overtaken by Go Jo Jo Go in the stretch.

“This is hope for when you go to the sales and pick yearlings. We don't have millions of dollars. We always try to get some sort of bargain. She was a nice purchase by a stallion that seems to get nice runners. We were lucky enough to get her,” Pita said.

Pita is confident that Princess Secret will carry her speed around two turns in the $400,000 My Dear Girl, the 1 1/16-mile finale of the Florida Sires Stakes series Sept. 26.

“I think breeding is going to be the biggest factor in the next leg of the series. I think she showed it today,” Pita said. “Hopefully, she'll come out of the race in good order and we'll see you in four weeks.”

Savatiano's strong closing kick down the stretch at Gulfstream Park made him the first winner at stud for multiple Grade 2 winner and Indiana sire Prayer for Relief, BloodHorse reports.

Under jockey Miguel Vasquez, Savatiano stayed in touch with the leaders, then swung five-wide to stage a steady drive and finish a length on top. The gelding finished the five-furlong maiden claiming race 1:00.36 over a fast main track for owner David Romanik and owner/trainer Ronald Spatz.

Savatiano was bred in Florida by SCF, Inc., out of the winning Imperialism mare Retsina.

Prayer for Relief, a 12-year-old son of Jump Start, stands at R Star Stallions in Anderson, Ind., for an advertised fee of $3,000. He began his stud career at Pleasant Acres Stallions in Florida before moving to Indiana prior to the 2018 breeding season.

Over eight seasons of racing, Prayer for Relief won eight of 46 starts for earnings of $2,277,948. His race record is highlighted by victories in the Grade 2 West Virginia Derby and Super Derby, as well as the G3 Iowa Derby and Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap.

Prayer for Relief is out of the multiple stakes-winning Mr. Sparkles mare Sparlkin Lil, making him a half-brother to stakes winner Twin Sparks. His extended family includes Grade 1 winner Another Reef and Grade 2 winner Miss Sunset.
