Group 1 winner Dubai Mile (Ire) has been retired to stud and will join the Manton Park stallion roster for the 2024 breeding season.

Successful in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud for Charlie and Mark Johnston last year, the son of Roaring Lion changed hands to join Freddie and Martyn Meade this season.

However, he failed to run for the father-and-son combination after suffering a career-ending injury and will now join the roster at Manton Park alongside Aclaim, Technician and Advertise.

Dubai Mile won three of his eight career starts for Ahmad Al Shaikh's Green Team Racing, who now jointly owns the colt with Manton Park.

Bred by the late Lady O'Reilly's Skymarc Farm out of the high-class stakes winning and Group 1 placed High Chaparral mare, Beach Bunny, who was just denied victory in the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh when beaten a short head behind Dar Re Mi.

Beach Bunny has proven just as effective as a broodmare producing nine winners from nine runners including Dubai Mile as well as Group performers Naadirr and Beach Belle.

Dubai Mile will be the first Group-1 winning son of Roaring Lion to stand at stud. He provided his late sire with his first Group winner from his sole crop.

Martyn Meade commented, “We were disappointed in having to bring Dubai Mile's racing career to an end sooner than expected as he had been training so well prior to sustaining a career ending injury at home on the gallops.

“We are however delighted to be adding Dubai Mile to our stallion roster and are confident he will sire many high-class performers. Roaring Lion was very special and a champion in his own right, to have his first Group 1 winning progeny from his only crop standing here is an exciting time for Manton Park Stud. Dubai Mile was very tough on the racecourse; we are very much looking forward to the next phase of his career at stud.”

Manton Park Stud resident Advertise (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) became Europe's latest first-crop sire to get off the mark when the Ralph Beckett-trained Matters Most (GB) prevailed in Thursday's £10,000 Byerley Stud British EBF Novice S. over five furlongs at Salisbury.

Originally sold for 135,000gns as a foal, the colt was knocked down at 500,000gns at Tattersalls October Book 1 to Richard Knight on behalf of Saleh Al Homaizi and was one of 17 horses later reoffered privately through Tattersalls when payment for the yearlings was not forthcoming.

Mick Kinane stepped in to buy Matters Most on behalf of Robert Ng after the colt had been broken in at Vicarage Farm by jockey Adam Kirby and his partner Megan Evans.

“Obviously a lot of people liked him at the sale and after what happened there was the possibility to try to negotiate something,” explained Rupert Pritchard-Gordon, racing manager to the Hong Kong-based Ng.

“Adam did a really nice job with the horse and was really happy with him. He just seems to be very mature and very professional. Ralph has always liked him. He is a big, imposing colt with a nice attitude.”

He continued, “Mick Kinane rode for Robert Ng and when Mick bought [multiple Group 1 winner] Romantic Warrior, Robert said, 'If Mick could find me something nice I'd really appreciate it'.

“As a general rule, Mr Ng doesn't buy a lot of yearlings, he usually likes to have seen them race. But he was very keen to renew the link with Mick and on this occasion it just seemed the right thing to do. Mick got on to Tatts, and Mr Ng was able to negotiate a settlement with them.”

With two starts and a win for Matters Most, naturally thoughts turn to Royal Ascot, but Pritchard-Gordon advised that the colt's programme will be very much set by his trainer.

“We'll see what Ralph wants to do with him next,” he said. “Robert Ng is very patient and he's not someone who would put any pressure on a trainer to go somewhere in particular. If Ralph wants to go to Ascot he can go, and if Ralph wants to do something else, Mr Ng wouldn't argue.”

Pritchard-Gordon added, “When Mr Ng bought him, the original idea was that he was going to go to Hong Kong and then he decided to leave him in Europe for the time being. He's a mature and likeable youngster and, with that pedigree, you hope he's a horse you can get straight on with.”

1st-Salisbury, £10,000, Nov, 5-4, 2yo, 5fT, 1:03.20, g/s.
MATTERS MOST (GB) (c, 2, Advertise {GB}–Squash {GB} {MGSP-Eng}, by Pastoral Pursuits {GB}) shaped with promise when third on debut over this trip at Newbury last month and he escaped the early skirmishes to stalk the pace in a close-up second here. Launching his bid passing the quarter-mile marker, the 6-5 favourite inched ahead entering the final furlong and kept on strongly from there to account for Liv My Life (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}) by a 1 1/4 lengths, becoming the first winner for his freshman sire (by Showcasing {GB}). Matters Most is the third foal and scorer produced by G3 Nell Gwyn S. runner-up and G3 Chartwell Fillies' S. third Squash (GB) (Pastoral Pursuits {GB}). He is a half-brother to GIII San Simoen S. victor Motorious (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) and a yearling colt by Sergei Prokofiev.

135,000gns Wlg '21 TATFOA; 500,000gns Ylg '22 TATOCT. Lifetime Record: 2-1-0-1, $8,363.
O-Robert Ng; B-Kirtlington Stud & Mrs Mary Taylor (GB); T-Ralph Beckett.

Young stallions Advertise (GB) and Aclaim (Ire) will leave the National Stud to stand at Martyn Meade's Manton Park Stud from the 2023 covering season.

The G1 Prix de la Foret winner Aclaim has made a successful start to his stud career, and was represented by a Classic winner from his first crop when the George Boughey-trained Cachet (Ire) won the 1,000 Guineas.

Advertise, who was trained, like Aclaim, by Meade, was a Group 1-winning sprinter in three different countries and has his first yearlings at the sales this autumn.

“We would like to thank the team at The National Stud for their energy and commitment to Advertise and Aclaim since the start of their stallion careers,” said Meade. “It has been an ambition for these two horses to return to Manton ever since they were trained here and we are now in a position to welcome them home to continue their time at stud.”

National Stud CEO Anna Kerr added, “The National Stud is delighted to have launched the careers of two such exciting young stallions, it has been very rewarding for the whole team to see what a strong start both Aclaim and Advertise have made to their stud careers. They both have bright futures ahead of them and we wish them every success at Manton Park.”

“I have grown up around horses and ridden from an early age. Training has always been the ultimate goal.” said Freddie. “I look forward to us being able to use traditional methods of training at Manton but appealing to a wider audience through utilizing modern techniques.”

The operation has undergone extensive renovations to both the yard and the gallops, which have been restored and fully irrigated. The father and son operation, which is aiming double the number of horses they have in training to fill the yard with a capacity for 100 horses, plan to be active at the yearling sales.

Fearghal Hogan has been appointed the Nominations and Bloodstock Manager of Manton Park Stallions. A graduate of the Irish National Stud Course, Hogan also worked for Coolmore America and Goffs prior to spending three years in the nominations and sales department of Ballyhane Stud. He began at Manton Park on Dec. 1, 2021.

“Fearghal brings to the position a great deal of experience and thorough knowledge of both the racing and breeding sectors,” Manton Park's owner, Martyn Meade, said. “He will be a tremendous asset to the team here and has developed a good reputation amongst breeders through many years of experience within the sector.”

“It is an exciting opportunity to work with this calibre of stallions which doesn't arise every day,” Hogan said. “I am delighted to take on this new challenge.”

Trained by Martyn Meade, Technician was purchased by Team Valor International after breaking his maiden by 3 1/4 lengths in April of his 3-year-old campaign in 2019. He finished second next out in the G3 Classic Trial before earning his first black-type score two starts later in the Listed Prix Ridgway over a mile and a quarter. Technician added the G3 Geoffrey Freer S. later that summer before wrapping up his season with scores in the G2 Prix Chaudenay and G1 Prix Royal-Oak. Technician has not been seen since beating one home in last year's G1 Ascot Gold Cup.

Technician is out of the American stakes winner Arosa. Another relative to have gone to stud recently in France is the two-time Group 1 winner Recoletos (Fr) (Whipper), while the dual Derby winner and sire Shahrastani appears under the third dam.

Last week's Haynes, Hanson and Clark Conditions S. winner Zechariah (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}) is likely to be put away for the winter with an eye towards starting in a Derby trial next spring, said trainer Martyn Meade. Campaigned by Aquis Farm and Manton Park, Zechariah broke his maiden at third asking at Sandown on July 22 before making fairly light work of Juddmonte's Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Godolphin's King Of Conquest (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) at Newbury on Friday.

“I was a little concerned about the ground, but it worked out pretty well,” Meade said. “It looked a fairly impressive win. On paper they looked a nice bunch. It was probably closer to a listed race in terms of quality, but the question is what happens next.”

“I think I'm leaning towards putting him away and bringing him back as a 3-year-old, because he's still a bit on the raw side,” Meade added. “Wherever we'd have to go now, it would mean putting him under great pressure, and I just think I'd like him to mature over the winter and then come back in top company at three.

“He's had four runs already, so he has got experience and he's shown me all I need to know. I just think he'd benefit more from maturing before going up in class. That is my thinking at the moment, but of course it can change. He's a nice prospect for next year. I think I'll be looking towards a Derby trial–he's by Nathaniel, so will certainly get 10 furlongs.”

Ballylinch Stud and Aquis Farm's Lone Eagle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who placed second in the G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, will miss the rest of the season after sustaining an injury in the July 24 G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. according to trainer Martyn Meade.

“I'm afraid he suffered an injury after his run in the King George,” said trainer Martyn Meade. “It's an injury that will take careful management–he's certainly out for the rest of this season, and the rest of his career is under doubt.

“He's obviously going to have the best recuperation. Unfortunately that's why he was a bit disappointing in the King George. He was found afterwards to have sustained an injury. Hence, the reason he's not run since.

“Hopefully, he might come back next season–but he's got to make a full recovery.”

Successful in the G3 Zetland S. at Newmarket to end his 2-year-old season on Oct. 10, the colt resurfaced with a fourth in the G3 bet365 Classic Trial at Sandown on Apr. 23. A classy winner of the Listed Cocked Hat S. at Goodwood on May 21, Lone Eagle was only a neck behind Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in the Irish Derby after leading for the majority of the 1 1/2-mile trip in June. He was last of five in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. and was under consideration for September's G1 Cazoo St Leger.

G1 Cazoo Derby hero Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), who also races for Godolphin, will not take part, and instead target the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Richard Hannon's Mojo Star (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), one better than Hurricane Lane's third in the Derby and fifth in the Irish equivalent is also signed on. The progressive G3 Gordon S. winner Ottoman Emperor (Ire) (Excelebration {Ire}) for Johnny Murtagh and Martyn Meade's Irish Derby second Lone Eagle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) also remain at the latest forfeit stage. One of two for Andrew Balding is G2 Great Voltigeur third Youth Spirit (Ire) (Camelot {GB}).

Aidan O'Brien fields an octet at this point for the race, including Sir Lamorak (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), listed winner and G3 Gordon S. second Sir Lucan (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and G2 Great Voltigeur runner-up The Mediterranean (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

A pair of listed-winning fillies have also stood their ground in Roger Varian's Save A Forest (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) and Ralph Beckett's Yesyes (GB) (Camelot {GB}).

Murtagh said of Ottoman Emperor, “That is the plan so far–we've had no problems, touch wood. I've not been speaking much to the OTI people [owners] since after Goodwood-[but] the English St Leger is the next stop.

“That last run was good, and the form of that race stood up at York. I think he deserves his chance in the St Leger–whether he stays the mile and six is a question mark, but we'll have to pay to find out.”

The July 24 G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. will be the next race for G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby runner-up Lone Eagle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), instead of the July 14 G1 Grand Prix de Paris. The Ballylinch Stud and Aquis Farm runner saluted in the G3 Zetland S. at Newmarket last October and ran fourth in the G3 Classic Trial at Sandown on Apr. 23. Back in the winner's circle after a four-length win in the Listed Cocked Hat S. on May 21, Lone Eagle made the running in the Irish Derby before being passed by Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in the shadow of the post.

“He's going for the King George. Everything's been perfect since the Irish Derby,” said trainer Martyn Meade. “Obviously it's a huge ask going there. It was a toss-up of going there or to France, and we decided we'd stay on home territory and take on the big guns at Ascot.”
