Mare Australis (Ire) (Australia {GB}–Miramare {Ger}, by Rainbow Quest), a winner at the highest level in France, has been sold to Pascal Noue of Haras de la Hetraie and will stand there next year, www.galopponline.de reported on Tuesday. The deal was brokered by Tina Rau and Richard Venn. A fee for the dual-purpose stallion will be announced later.

Bred by Stall Ullmann and raced by Gestut Schlenderhan and Andre Fabre, the 5-year-old won on debut at Munich in November of his juvenile year. In three starts at three, he scored in the Listed Prix de l'Avre second up and was then second in the G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris. Runner-up in the G2 Prix d'Harcourt when making his 4-year-old bow in 2020, he ran out a 1 3/4-length victor of the G1 Prix Ganay that May. From five starts this term, he was third in the Prix d'Harcourt and later added the G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly. Mare Australis retires with a mark of 11-4-2-1 and $408,989 in earnings.

He is out of multiple stakes placed Miramare and is her last living foal. His dam is a half-sister to group winners Montclaire (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) and Macleya (Ger) (Winged Love {Ire}), who was also second in the G1 Prix Royal-Oak. The family has also been effective Stateside, with GI Manhattan S. and GI United Nations S. hero Tribhuvan (Fr) (Toronado {Ire}) also under the second dam.

Working his way back to the level of his success in last year's G1 Prix Ganay, Gestut Schlenderhan's Mare Australis (Ire) (Australia {GB}) was steered to a cosy win in Sunday's G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly in what amounted to one of Olivier Peslier's masterclasses. Always comfortable on the front end kept company by the pacemaker Soho (Ger) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), the 3-1 shot took command at the top of the straight and had the energy to shy at the advertising boards en route to a two-length verdict over Bubble Gift (Fr) (Nathaniel {Ire}), with Glycon (Fr) (Le Havre {GB}) a further length away in third.

Lightly-campaigned for his age and raced only twice since his career highlight at ParisLongchamp last May, Mare Australis had posted a respectable return when third behind Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) and Sealiway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) back at that venue Apr. 10 before finishing fourth in the latest edition of the Ganay there at the start of last month. Trainer Andre Fabre is keen to go where the underfoot conditions suit. “This horse had been away a long time and he needed his two starts this year to reach his top condition,” he explained. “Softer ground today was also a help. If the ground is suitable and the weather not too dry, he might take his chance in the Grand Prix de Saint Cloud. If not we will wait for the autumn to race him again.”

Mare Australis is the last live foal out of the dual listed-placed Miramare (Ger) (Rainbow Quest), whose listed-winning dam Minaccia (Ger) (Platini {Ger}) produced five black-type performers headed by the G2 Prix de Pomone and G3 Prix Allez France winner Macleya (Ger) (Winged Love {Ire}) and the G3 Prix de Barbeville scorer Montclair (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). Also the second dam of the G2 Prix du Muguet-placed Mer et Nuages (Fr) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and the GI United Nations H. hero Tribhuvan (Fr) (Toronado {Ire}), she is connected to the dual Classic-winning German champion Majoritat (Ger) (Konigsstuhl {Ger}) and the legendary Monsun (Ger), while this dam line is also responsible for the G1 Japanese Derby hero Eishin Flash (Jpn) (King's Best).

It has been mooted more than one this spring, but without labouring a point it seems clear after the declarations for the racing at ParisLongchamp on Sunday that Messrs Fabre and Peslier are linked again, at least for the time being. France's dynamic duo combine with two major chances in the group races on the fixture, with Lady Bamford's Dreamflight (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in the nine-furlong G3 Prix la Force and with Gestut Schlenderhan's returning Mare Australis (Ire) (Australia {GB}) in the G2 Prix d'Harcourt over a mile and a quarter. The latter is racing for the first time since winning the G1 Prix Ganay here last May, so will he be sharp enough to deal with fellow top-level scorers Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) and Sealiway (Fr) (Galiway {GB})?

Will Dreams Shatter For Tumbler?

Taking on Dreamflight in the Force is the Wertheimers' exciting colt Tumbler (Fr) (Kingman {GB}), who earned 'TDN Rising Star' status with his 10-length debut romp at Saint-Cloud in October. Entered in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains and G1 Prix du Jockey Club, the relative of Falco re-enters the fray over this interim trip to help Carlos Laffon-Parias decide which route to take. In the G3 Prix Vanteaux for fillies also over nine furlongs, man-of-the-moment Peslier maintains his allegiance to Jean-Etienne Dubois's Listed Grand Criterium de Bordeaux winner Singforthemoment (Ire) (No Nay Never) in what should be another informative afternoon.

A Clearer Picture

To say that the 3-year-old career of 'TDN Rising Star' High Definition (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was an anti-climax is an understatement, but Ballydoyle's 2020 G2 Beresford S. winner gets a clean slate in the G3 Alleged S. at The Curragh. The truth is, we still don't know how much ability he has and this should begin to enlighten us. In the card's G3 Gladness S., another star of the 2020 juvenile scene and fellow 'TDN Rising Star' Thunder Moon (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) also makes his comeback. It seems a long time since Chantal Regalado-Gonzalez's colt sparkled in the G1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien National S. and if he can give 13 pounds weight-for-age to the Madrid H. scorer Markaz Paname (Ire) (Markaz {Ire}) he will be well on course.

Click here for the group fields.

Gestut Schlenderhan's Mare Australis (Ire) (Australia {GB}), a winner of the G1 Prix Ganay, has suffered a setback with one of his ankles and will be out for the summer according to trainer Andre Fabre. A winner of a French listed race last June, the chestnut ran second in the Oct. 25 G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris and Apr. 11 G2 Prix d'Harcourt prior to his May 2 Ganay win at ParisLongchamp.

“Unfortunately Mare Australis has a problem with an ankle,” said Fabre. “I hope he will recover in time for the autumn, but he won't run at all through the summer.”

Fabre's G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Philomene (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) will return to the races in the G3 Prix de la Nonette at Deauville on Aug. 21. Successful in her only start as a juvenile last year, the bay scored in the G3 Prix Penelope at Saint-Cloud on Apr. 6 before a sixth-place run in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches on May 16. She was only three-quarters of a length behind Joan Of Arc (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the French Oaks at Chantilly on June 20.

“Philomene will run in Deauville on Aug. 21–she's going to have her prep race for the Vermeille,” said Fabre. “I think it's clear she's capable of winning a Group 1. You couldn't blame the jockey last time–because that happens at Chantilly.”

There was more Boudot magic at ParisLongchamp on Sunday as “PC” made all to draw the sting from all rivals and land the G1 Prix Ganay with the rapid improver Mare Australis (Ire) (Australia {GB}). Always highly-regarded and now an entirely different proposition from the greenhorn of last summer, Gestut Schlenderhan's homebred had offered a glimpse of what was to come when second on his return to Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) in the 10-furlong G2 Prix d'Harcourt at this venue Apr. 11. Asked a new question by his rider on this sternest test of his ability so far, the 5-2 second favourite responded by stretching every rival including Mogul (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) who was in closest attendance. When he kicked in early straight, he turned the screw too tight on Ballydoyle's 9-5 market-leader raider and kept galloping true to the line to beat the emergent Gold Trip (Fr) (Outstrip {GB}) by 1 3/4 lengths. Providing Andre Fabre with a seventh renewal of this prestige event, he offered proof of his talent by gapping the eventual third Mogul by 3 1/2 lengths in total. “He's always been a nice horse, but he's needed a lot of time as he was very immature,” Fabre explained. “He's coming around now and had run a very good race in the Harcourt. He won really nicely today and I'll keep him in France and maybe go for the [G1] Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. I don't know yet, but his target will be the Arc later in the season.”

One of a clutch of Schlenderhan horses sent to France at the end of 2019 along with the now-famous In Swoop (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and talented Alson (Ger) (Areion {Ger}), Mare Australis had beaten the subsequent group 2 winner Zamrud (Ger) (Samum {Ger}) on his sole start at two for the Jean-Pierre Carvalho stable at Munich. In deep on his debut for this stable when fourth behind the smart Port Guillaume (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}), Gold Trip and Dawn Intello (Fr) (Intello {Ger}) in a 10 1/2-furlong conditions race at Saint-Cloud last May, he made heavy weather of winning the 12-furlong Listed Prix de l'Avre at Chantilly the following month. Not seen again until finishing second to the Irish revelation Baron Samedi (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) in the G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris over 11 furlongs here in October, the bay was no match for the still-underestimated Skalleti in the Prix d'Harcourt but again demonstrated that he finds plenty for pressure. With Fabre having worked the oracle in the interim, he looked a ready-made Arc challenger here after that fine-tuning process. The solid marker Gold Trip was just over two lengths behind Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) in the autumn showpiece, so Mare Australis is already comfortably in the vicinity when it comes to that target.

Mare Australis is the last known foal out of the triple listed-placed Miramare (Ger) (Rainbow Quest), a daughter of the German listed scorer Minaccia (Ger) (Platini {Ger}). She in turn produced five black-type performers headed by the G2 Prix de Pomone and G3 Prix Allez France winner Macleya (Ger) (Winged Love {Ire}) and the G3 Prix de Barbeville scorer Montclair (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). She is also the second dam of this stable's Listed Prix de Pontarme winner and G2 Prix du Muguet third Mer et Nuages (Fr) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and the GII Fort Marcy S. winner Tribhuvan (Fr) (Toronado {Ire}). The fourth dam is the dual Classic-winning German champion Majoritat (Ger) (Konigsstuhl {Ger}), a close relative of the great Monsun (Ger) whose list of descendants feature the G1 Japanese Derby hero Eishin Flash (Jpn) (King's Best).
