Following a momentous 60th anniversary year for Moyglare Stud, with a Classic winner and a champion stayer to the team's credit, owner Eva-Maria Bucher-Haefner and her bloodstock advisor Fiona Craig picked up a smart pair of fillies at Arqana's Breeding Stock Sale last December.

Both Malavath (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) and Amazing Grace (Ger) (Protectionist {Ger}), who are Group 2 winners and were Group 1-placed in France and Germany respectively, will remain in training this season. They have now left Europe to join Christophe Clement's team of horses, which is currently stabled at Payson Park in Florida.

“They didn't arrive there until the middle of January but they have both been kept on the go,” reported Craig. “After the sale, Amazing Grace went to Nicolas Clement [in Chantilly] and Malavath went back to Francis Graffard, so they were in really good nick when they arrived. But they had a long journey and they have had some good time out in the paddock with Christophe.”

She continued, “He's stepping their work up now but there is no desperate rush to run them in Florida. We'll know a little bit more in the next few weeks. Malavath wants 7 1/2 [furlongs] to a mile, so she is a bit more straightforward and will probably go straight up to New York. There is a possibility that Amazing Grace could run in Florida, but we'll see.”

The 5-year-old Amazing Grace, who was previously trained by Waldemar Hickst, was, like her sire, bred by Dr Christoph Berglar. Craig added, “She is an absolute beauty and she'll be so easy to breed. She's Monsun on top of Danehill Dancer. We bought her as a broodmare but then we thought we'd roll the dice. She's a good mare and we'll see if we could improve on that in America. We've got a lot of young mares so there's no big rush to put her in foal straightaway. And [GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf runner-up] Malavath is only four now, so that's an advantage.”

Closer to home, the Moyglare team can also look forward to a fairly imminent return for the Dermot Weld-trained Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Homeless Songs (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), while star stayer Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who is raced in partnership by Moyglare and Coolmore, is being primed by Aidan O'Brien for another Cup campaign this summer.

“Homeless Songs has been kept in training all winter and she will either run in the Park Express on the opening day [of the turf season] or a week later in the Heritage Stakes. I think a lot of it will depend on ground,” Craig said. “And Kyprios is also back in full training.”

Christophe Clement said he always looks forward to his annual trip to Deauville for the Arqana December Sale. It's a bit like stepping back in time for the U.S.-based trainer as he wanders the grounds that were once the setting of childhood summers spent working for his father, French conditioner Miguel Clement Sr. The youngest of three, Clement is still often called 'Little Clement' while in Deauville.

“That always makes me laugh,” said Clement, whose own son Miguel has a handle on their stable in America while his father is away. “I come to this sale every year. It's a great way to see a lot of friends and family and still do some work.”

Clement kept busy during Saturday's select session at Arqana and will be returning to the States with several new trainees in tow, highlighted by the session-topping filly Malavath (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}). The dual Group 1-placed 3-year-old was purchased for €3.2 million by Clement's longstanding client Moyglare Stud.

“I was aware that she was going to be in the December Sale and we've been working on this for the past two months,” Clement shared. “I'm delighted. I think it's a great acquisition for Moyglare.”

The winner of the G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte and runner-up in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at two, Malavath returned to the starting gate this year to claim a Group 3 in Deauville and place second in the G1 Qatar Prix de la Foret for Francis Graffard. In her most recent start, Malavath finished fifth in the GI FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile.

Clement said that he has no specific races in mind yet for the new acquisition, but added that he believes she will be a good fit for American racing.

“I think she seems to be [best at] seven furlongs to a mile. One of the reasons why Moyglare was interested in the filly was that she brings speed to their program. We'll get her to the States and let her tell us what to do. We have a great program in New York. If she's doing well, plenty of good things can happen.”

Also on Saturday, Moyglare Stud purchased Amazing Grace (Protectionist) for €850,000. The Group 2 winner will continue her racing career with Clement.

“She will be a fun fit for the longer turf races,” said the 4-year-old's new conditioner.

The Co. Meath-based Moyglare Stud has sent horses to Clement for almost 25 years. Their greatest successes together include Grade I winners Relaxed Gesture (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}) and Dress to Thrill (Ire) (Danehill). This year, American-bred Beautiful Lover (Arch) carried the black, white and red silks to victory in the GIII La Prevoyante S.

“We have a great relationship,” said Clement. “We've had plenty of good winners for them. It's fun because when you train for an owner-breeder, you get that kind of relationship where it doesn't depend on what happens today. It's more long-term, and usually that works out best for both sides.”

Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, who races with Clement and has been a leading owner this year on the New York circuit, was active during the first session, purchasing listed winner By All Means (Ire) (Kodiac) for €650,000. The juvenile was Group 2-placed for owners Giacomo Algranti and Haras d'Etreham.

“She is a very nice filly,” said Clement. “I believe that one of the owners, Nicolas de Chambure [Haras d'Etreham] will stay in for a piece, which makes it even more exciting.”

Also during Arqana's opening session, Clement purchased Group winner Atomic Blonde (Ger) (The Grey Gatsby {Ire}) for €300,000 and went to €280,000 for black-type filly Lady Mia (Fr) (Outstrip).

“You have a lot to compete with in New York,” he noted. “You have to buy some good horses because the turf division is not easy. You need to bring in new blood in order to compete.”

By Emma Berry and Brian Sheerin

DEAUVILLE, France–A memorable anniversary year for Moyglare Stud was rounded off with some select purchases at Arqana's Breeding Stock Sale, including top lot, Malavath (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) (lot 199), at €3.2 million on a day when the the single session aggregate was more than the entire sale last year.

The Co Meath-based farm owned by Eva-Maria Bucher-Haefner and established by her father Walter Haefner celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2022, and in quite some style on the track, courtesy of the Irish Classic winner Homeless Songs (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and the champion stayer Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who was bred and raced in partnership with Coolmore.

The 3-year-old Malavath, twice runner-up at Group 1 level and the winner of a Group 2 and Group 3 in France, will race on, bearing the famous black, white and red silks in America, where she will be trained by Christophe Clement after leaving Francis Graffard's stable.

“Now all she has to do is to win a Group 1,” said Moyglare's bloodstock advisor Fiona Craig. “She's lovely, and physically she'll make a nice mare for Moyglare down the road; we can breed her to just about anything. I think America is the place for her. She likes the tracks there. I think she'll struggle to get a full mile here whereas I think a mile over there should be within her limits. That's the plan anyway, and we all know that plans don't always work out.”

She continued, “We have lots of lovely mares but they stay a bit and now we just need a bit of speed, and that's what she has. Eva saw her earlier and she liked her. You can't really pick any holes in her.

“It's been a great year. We've had a lot of luck, we know it won't keep going like that but we've been through the lulls and now we've had some luck.”

Swiss-born Barbara Keller, who owned Malavath with David Redvers and Everest Racing, said of her compatriot Bucher-Haefner's purchase, “It's from Switzerland to Switzerland. We're very old friends and she couldn't be going to a better place.”

Moyglare later bought lot 204, Dr. Christoph Berglar's Group 2 winner Amazing Grace (Ger) (Protectionist {Ger}), for €850,000 from the draft of Ronald Rauscher.

Gemini Stud's G1 Prix Vermeille winner Sweet Lady (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) (lot 188) was another from the Graffard stable to reap a decent return and she will be on her way to England after being signed for by Claiborne's Bernie Sams on behalf of an undisclosed client of the farm for €2,050,000.

“She's for a man who has a couple of mares in England and she may come back to Kentucky eventually,” said Sams. “He wanted to try to buy a filly here with a race record and a good pedigree and she fits that bill.”

Bred by Chris Wright's British-based Stratford Place Stud, the 4-year-old Sweet Lady is a daughter of the dual listed winner High Heel Sneakers (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and won six of her 15 starts, including the G2 Prix Corrida and G3 Prix de Flore.

Rocketing Figures

Malavath was one of a septet of seven-figure lots on a day which easily outstripped the stellar returns of 2021, with those leading lights selling respectively to interests from America, Japan, Australia, Dubai and Saudi Arabia. In just one day, the turnover was up 9% on the entire aggregate for four days of last year's sale, and by 42% on last year's opening session. The tally weighed in at €45,882,000 by the time the last of 238 lots had exited the ring in a session which lasted for more than 12 hours. A clearance rate of 79% was achieved, with the average of €244,045 up by 16%, and the median up to €115,000 from €87,000.

He may have pocketed €2.7 million in sales within the space of 20 minutes but Baroda Stud's David Cox could be forgiven for feeling there was more to be extracted from Burgarita (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) (lot 177), who was knocked down prematurely to Anthony Stroud for €1.7million just as a last-gasp bid was placed.

A huge groan went out among those in attendance at the packed sales complex but Cox countered that the failed bidder had long enough to get involved as the price hovered through an arduous bidding process on €1.7 million, and the leading consignor wasn't in the mood for arguing with French law.

The sale of the G1 Prix de Diane-placed Burgarita represented the most expensive lot sold by Cox's Baroda Stud and it was quickly followed by Nick Bradley's teak-tough Oscula (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}), a 4,000gns yearling purchase, selling for €1 million to Ted Voute on behalf of Prince Faisal's Nawara Stud.

Cox explained, “In fairness, the underbidders had plenty of time to put in their bid and, once the hammer goes down, it's French law that the deal is done. When I saw the Godolphin team looking at her I thought she was an ideal filly to go to Dubawi (Ire). There's still racing in her, if that's what they want to do, but she's a gorgeous filly and one to look forward to in the breeding shed.”

Shortly after the sale, Stroud embraced Cox and joked, “Well, we got there eventually.” He later revealed to the press, “It's a family I know very well because of the Wildensteins and Dayton. We thought she'd be an ideal candidate for Dubawi.”

Baroda Stud brought a select draft of 11 to Arqana while the majority of the team stayed at home in Ireland to prepare for the December National Hunt Sale at Goffs. Cox paid tribute to his dedicated team of staff after the sale of Oscula as well as paying special thanks to BBA Ireland's Mick Donohoe for entrusting him to sell Burgarita on behalf of his client.

Cox said, “Fair play to Mick Donohoe, who sold the filly on behalf of his client [Ama.Zingteam], so I am delighted for them. She's a quality Sea The Stars filly with a great temperament. I think it's the highest-priced horse we've ever sold and to have another millionaire walk through the ring a couple of lots later in Oscula was great. She is a tough filly and hopefully she is lucky for them.

“The team are at home and are getting ready to roll on Monday. We have a great team. Between the lads on the farm who steer the ship at home and never come to the sales to Padraic Gahan in the office and Noel McDonnell here at the sales. We have great people working for us and without them we couldn't do it.”

He added, “If anything, Burgarita and Oscula highlight the advantages to selling in the sales ring rather than on the private market. Owners are being inundated with private offers throughout a season but I think today proved that there's no better way to sell a classy filly than in the ring. When two, three or four buyers take each other on, there's no ceiling to what a horse can make and that was evident today. Also, the hype of a sale is great and we have some very happy owners and buyers alike so hopefully it's a win-win for everyone.”

Oscula has more than paid for her paltry yearling price tag during her two seasons in training with George Boughey with three Group 3 wins as well as a listed contest under her belt. The 3-year-old filly has also earned black type on another 10 occasions, including when third in the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac.

“Prince Faisal selected her,” said Voute. “He watches all the videos and the pictures and we're just the team on the ground and went around to make sure everything is okay and organise vettings. He's chosen her to support Mishriff in his first season at stud here at Sumbe. She was a bit like Mishriff, they were both tough as nails and hopefully they will produce something good together. I'm suspecting Prince Faisal will send Mishriff a half a dozen mares. Half the broodmare band will probably go to him but plans will be finalised when the sales are over.”

Hello You…And Your Mum

Shadai Farm made its presence felt when snapping up G2 Rockfel S. winner Hello You (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) (lot 195) for €1,550,000 on a day when the speedy 3-year-old's dam Lucrece (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) (lot 164) went through the ring for €710,000 to BBA Ireland.

Hello You was trained by David Loughnane and owned by Amo Racing. She was bought by Robson Aguiar for €350,000 at the Arqana Deauville Select Yearling Sale in 2020 and has done her connections proud.

Takuya Fujita, who signed for the filly on behalf of Shadai Farm, revealed that Hello You's speed is what attracted him most.

He explained, “My first impressions of Hello You when I saw her on the sales ground were that she had a really good walk. I thought she was my pick of the day and her conformation was perfect. She achieved good performances as a race filly but, more than that, she is just a very good mare.”

Asked if Hello You would stay in training or be retired to the breeding shed, he replied, “Well, we haven't decided that yet and we need to talk to my boss first. This is my first time attending this sale. I thought the beginning of the sale was slow and quiet, not what I expected. Now the market has got stronger and stronger and the goalposts will only go so far.”

He added, “The European pedigrees have made a big imprint on our breeding and racing in Japan. I try to find mares with good speed rather than stamina which is why I picked up this filly.”

Hello You and Lucrece were consigned by Ecurie des Monceaux and the latter, who featured among BBA Ireland's massive haul, was sold in foal to Frankel.

Shadai also paid €400,000 for the Ronald Rauscher-consigned Group 3 winner Noble Heidi (Fr) (Intello {Ger}) (lot 167) and €160,000 for Henri-Alex Pantall's Wooturn (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) (lot 87).

Flay's Treble Of Smart Fillies

Bobby Flay has enjoyed notable success with his European broodmare purchases and he signed up three more decent prospects on Saturday for a collective €2,450,000.

Lot 208, Final Gesture (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), bought for €925,000 from Godolphin, is a filly with almost all the bases covered. A dual winner with some minor black type herself, her mother, the Newsells Park Stud-bred Secret Gesture (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), was a Group 2 winner and placed in two Classics and is a sister to two Group 1 winners. Further back in the family there's the Arc winner Sagamix (Fr) as well as one of the most precocious and classy sprinters of recent years, Perfect Power (Ire).

“This is the kind of pedigree that I'm really interested in. She's by Dubawi, she's got some black type, she's out of a Galileo mare, and these are very, very hard to attain. This is a horse I hope I'll have for a very long time and I hope that my daughter will be breeding from this family in years to come.”

He added that Final Gesture will head to England to join his mares already boarding there and that she will visit a “top three to five stallion”.

Flay went to the same amount for Glinting (Ire), a 4-year-old daughter of Galileo (Ire) offered in foal to Wootton Bassett (GB) by La Motteraye Consignment. A non-winner herself, the filly (lot 219) is from a family steeped in black type and including her Group 3-winning brothers Bondi Beach (Ire) and Constantinople (Ire) as well as this season's leading juveniles Proud And Regal (Ire) and Silver Knott (GB).

The breeder and chef had earlier signed for lot 191, Ottilien (Fr) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), for €600,000, who was consigned by her trainer David Menuisier for Quantum Leap Racing, who also bred the sister of Group 1 winner Morandi (Fr). Ottilien's three wins include the Listed Prix Turenne and she was third in the G1 Prix de Royallieu in October.

Times Up For Hubie de Burgh

Renowned bloodstock agent Hubie de Burgh predicted that the 110-rated Times Square (Fr) could recoup her €1.25 million price tag if taking to racing in Australia after signing for the daughter of Zarak (Fr).

Times Square won twice for Christophe Ferland and was only narrowly beaten at the highest level on two occasions, including when going down by a neck in third behind Mangoustine (Fr) in the G1 French 1000 Guineas.

De Burgh said, “She has been purchased to go to Australia and will go and race down there. I can't tell you who is going to train her yet because the buyer is 35,000 feet in the air at the minute.”

He added, “We thought the opposition was going to be strong and, quite honestly, we thought we wouldn't be able to get her. She's a Group 1-placed 3-year-old by Zarak out of a Siyouni (Fr) mare, so they are two of the great proven stallions in Europe at the minute, and the family goes back well. The half-sister is group-placed and won her maiden very impressively so there are a lot of little things happening in the pedigree. With all the prize-money on offer in Australia, if she can go down there and be a good miler, she could bring back her costs very quickly.”

BBA Ireland Leads Buyers' Table

Michael Donohoe, bidding online from an office within the Arqana complex, was again one of the busiest agents in action, with a number of high-profile lots knocked down both in his name and that of BBA Ireland. The agent has been prominent throughout the sales season, often acting on behalf of his client Yuesheng Zhang of Yulong Investments, who last week bought Alcohol Free (Ire) for 5.4 millions gns to race on in Australia and was present at Arqana.

Donohoe confirmed that he was buying for a range of clients. He said, “A number of fillies are staying in training and going to Australia, one mare that I bought is going to America and one filly is going to the Middle East.”

Various BBA Ireland agents contributed to a haul of 35 purchases for the agency through the opening session for a total of €8,571,000. The list was headed by lot 184, Let's Misbehave (Ire), a Montjeu (Ire) half-sister to High Chaparral (Ire) sold in foal to Siyouni from Haras du Cadran for €920,000.

Treve's Sister to Juddmonte

Juddmonte needs only to make selective purchases and a weanling half-sister to a dual G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner is just about as desirable as they come. So it was that the Le Havre (Ire) sister to Treve (Fr) (Motivator {GB}) passed from one great breeding operation to another for the sum of €675,000, providing some consolation as Haras du Quesnay prepares to close its doors, that those bloodlines will live on at one of the best farms in the world.

“It's sad to see the end of the Quesnay and she's a very special filly so we're delighted to have her,” said Juddmonte's Simon Mockridge of lot 166. “Obviously you've got a dual Arc winner under the first dam so this is an amazing opportunity. I know this was the last foal but for a May foal she is very well made and very strong.”

The first four lots from the Quesnay draft sold for a combined €1,525,000. Jill Lamb, buying on behalf of Newsells Park Stud, snapped up the first of the dispersal, going to €350,000 for the unraced mare Perle d'Auge (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}).

Sold as lot 31, the 5-year-old is a great granddaughter of Haras de Saint Pair's influential mare Pearly Shells (GB) (Efisio {GB}) and was bought by Quesnay just two years ago for €22,000. It is a family, however, which enjoys regular updates, including a recent Group 1 win for Pearls Galore (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) who is a half-sister to Perle d'Auge's listed-winning dam Pearly Steph (Fr) (Oasis Dream {GB}). Another of the young mare's half-sisters is Godolphin's Eternal Pearl (GB) (Frankel {GB}), the winner this year of Group 3 contests in France and England.

Perle d'Auge, who has an Intello (Ger) filly catalogued as lot 329 in Sunday's sale, was offered in foal to Persian King (Ire).

Lamb later signed for the second-most expensive foal of the session, a Kingman (GB) (lot 176) daughter of the Group 2 winner Castellar (Fr) (American Post {GB}), a half-brother to the Group 1 winner and sire Recoletos (Fr), at €400,000. She was also bought for Newsells Park, from Haras de San Isidro.

Aussies Get Stuck in

As Arqana's Australian representative, Damon Gabeddy has been responsible for bringing a large group of visitors from the Southern Hemisphere to Deauville, but he also runs his own bloodstock agency and as Belmont Bloodstock signed for three horses during Saturday's elite session. These included lot 142, the winner Roselyne (Fr), bought from the Fairway Consignment for €400,000. Now three and in foal to Siyouni (Fr) on southern hemisphere time, Roselyne, who is by Shamardal's son Dariyan (Fr), is bred on a similar pattern to Lope De Vega (Ire), who is a half-brother to her dam Bal De La Rose (Fr) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}). Furthermore, Roselyne is a half-sister to German Group 1 winner Danceteria (Fr) (Redoute's Choice {Aus}).

“She's been bought for Nino Tufilli who is based in Western Australia but the mare will go back to New South Wales to Middlebrook Valley Stud. She has a beautiful pedigree, we love Siyouni and they work well down there. Nino has just watched Amelia's Jewel (Aus), who is by Siyouni, win the Group 1 in Australia, and he was rather keen to acquire her.

“We've probably got about 14 Aussies here at the sale and there has been terrific interest. They have been busy and have bought about 15 or 16 horses so far.”

Elliott Gets Business Done Early

Before the action sprung into life, Alex Elliott signed for an interesting filly in Miss Saigon (Ire) (lot 154), an unraced Galileo (Ire) daughter of G1 1000 Guineas winner Miss France (Ire) Dansili {GB}) in foal to Palace Pier (GB) for €400,000.

He said, “She has been bought for a new client and will be boarded at Whatton Manor Stud. She's by Galileo and out of a Guineas winner. She's a lovely filly and, as soon as she walked out of her box, I said that I was going to try and buy her. This is the first Flat mare that we have bought for this client.”

Trillium's Sister to Flintstone Stud

American Kestrel (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) (lot 116), the 3-year-old half-sister to G2 Flying Childers and G3 Molecomb S. winner Trillium (Ire) (No Nay Never), was the selection of agent Matthew Houldsworth on behalf of English breeder David Weston. Houldsworth signed for the stakes-placed winning juvenile at €385,000. Weston is the owner of Flintstone Stud, close to Manton in Marlborough.

The filly is the daughter of the Group 3-placed Rockliffe Stud mare Marsh Hawk (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) whose first three runners have all earned black type, including Mohawk King (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}).

“Marsh Hawk has been well mated and obviously Trillium is a very exciting filly,” said Houldsworth. “The idea is to cover her commercially. She will likely go to Ireland to Fergal Hogan and we'll look for a suitable stallion.”

The Tally-Ho Stud-bred filly, who chased home Pizza Bianca (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf last year, was a £29,000 purchase by Star Bloodstock at the Goffs Premier Yearling Sale in 2020.

She was then sold to a partnership that includes David Redvers, Everest Racing and Barbara Keller for £120,000 at Arqana's Breeze-Up Sale in Doncaster the following spring.

Trained by Francis Graffard, Malavath was placed on her first two starts at two before breaking her maiden at Chantilly that September.

She then went on to win the G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte before running that creditable second at the Breeders' Cup.

A Group 3 winner earlier this season, Malavath was last seen finishing second in the G1 Prix de la Foret.

The page could get even better as the talented filly is set to run in the G1 Breeders' Mile in Keeneland on November 5.

Trainer Francis Graffard has indicated that Malavath (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) is on course for the QIPCO 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 1 following her victory in last week's G3 Prix Imprudence.

The Tally-Ho Stud-bred filly is owned by Everest Racing, David Redvers and Barbara Keller, and she enjoyed a successful juvenile campaign, winning the G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte before travelling to California to finish runner-up to Pizza Bianca (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Behind her in fourth that day was Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}), who booked her own passage to the Guineas when winning Tuesday's G3 Nell Gwyn S. at Newmarket.

Graffard said of Malavath, “We were very impressed with her comeback, she did it nicely and everything is fine with her. She is better on better ground but she has just shown that she's a very good filly.

“At the moment we are leaning towards the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, there are some trials in England, Ireland and France again this week so we will decide after that, but that is the main option.”

The trainer also confirmed that last year's G1 Champion S. winner Sealiway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) will run next in the G1 Prix Ganay after finishing second in the G2 Prix d'Harcourt at ParisLongchamp on Sunday.

“I was very pleased with him, he will come on a lot for that,” said Graffard.

Another of his stable stalwarts, The Revenant (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), has options to run in the G1 Prix d'Ispahan or G1 Lockinge S., having already posted two victories this season.

It wouldn't be Craven week without a brisk wind blasting across Newmarket Heath, but for those of you considering spending afternoons paddock-side perusing the physical merits of some of this year's Classic contenders, the encouraging news is that the temperature is rising in East Anglia this week, along with the quality of action on the turf.

France and Ireland are ahead of Britain on the Classic trials front, and there is plenty to reflect upon in that regard, but a brief look ahead to the Newmarket and Newbury trials this week is enough to quicken the pulse that has only just come back to a steady tempo following the Corinthian exploits of the marvellous Sam Waley-Cohen in Saturday's Grand National. The name Mullins is never far from the winner's enclosure, in National Hunt circles especially, but Willie's thunder is increasingly being stolen by his nephew Emmet, 32, for whom Noble Yeats (Ire) was a first National winner with his first runner, the season after the young trainer saddled his first Cheltenham Festival winner. The winning 7-year-old also ensured that his sire, the four-time Ascot Gold Cup winner Yeats (Ire), surged to the head of the National Hunt sires' table for the first time.

But enough of the hedge-hoppers, it's Craven week after all, and we are about to witness the unveiling of Europe's champion 2-year-old of 2021 in Wednesday's Craven S. Godolphin's Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), the pride of Jose Delamotte's Haras d'Haspel, sailed through his juvenile exams without turning a hair, culminating in victory on the Rowley Mile in the G1 Dewhurst S. That experience of Newmarket's famous dip will doubtless be of value as his trainer Charlie Appleby sends him out on his first serious test a year to the day after he was sold by Norman Williamson's Oak Tree Farm for 210,000gns at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-up Sale, which begins on Tuesday.

Appleby has won two of the last three runnings of the Craven, bearing in mind that the race didn't take place at all in 2020. His first winner, Masar (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), famously went on to win the Derby, while last year's winner Master Of The Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) was beaten only a short-head by Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) when second in the 2000 Guineas.

Appleby's embarrassment of 3-year-old riches includes the exciting Coroebus (Ire), who looks set to head to Saturday's Greenham S. at Newbury, while New Science (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) heads a disappointingly small field for Tuesday's European Free Handicap.

Those on 'young stallion watch' will have spotted two entries for the National Stud resident Time Test (GB) in the Nell Gwyn S. The duo consists of William Stone's Salisbury Group 3 winner Romantic Time (GB) and Ribbon Rose (GB), who is unbeaten in two starts for the in-form stable of Marco Botti, who has formed an interesting partnership with Neil Callan since the jockey's return from Hong Kong.

These days, the Nell Gwyn is sponsored by Lanwades Stud, an arrangement that came about after the race was run for some years in the name of the former Plantation Stud manager Leslie Harrison. It was a fitting memorial to a man who devoted so much of his life to the breeding operation of Lord Howard de Walden, and who loved nothing more than the prospect of a Classic filly.

In retirement, Harrison, whose caustic wit was every bit as sharp as his pedigree recall, chose to share his great knowledge with a group of young(ish) enthusiasts who would gather in his study once a week, large glasses of wine in hand, sharing the space with his many lurchers. I was lucky enough to be among the group, and they were days I cherish. I miss them as much as I miss Leslie himself, whose extraordinary kindness is remembered especially in this week, 15 years after his passing.

The Z Factor

Zarkava (Fr) (Zamindar) was described at the end of her racing career by her breeder HH The Aga Khan as “the greatest reward a breeder could have”.

With brilliance in abundance, plus a liberal dash of spirit, there was little she had left to prove on her retirement from the track. All bar one of her Zarkava's seven victories came at French racing's Parisian focal point of Longchamp where she annexed the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac, G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, G1 Prix Vermeille and G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. At Chantilly, she also claimed the G1 Prix de Diane. She was simply wonderful, and as a fifth-generation descendant of Petite Etoile, who was such an important foundation of the Aga Khan Studs and a hugely influential mare worldwide, Zarkava represented the pinnacle of the breeding operation which celebrates its centenary this year.

While superior performance on the racecourse is the ultimate aim for any breeder, studs are built on the ability of those champions to impart their superior genes. For myriad reasons that doesn't always happen. In the case of Zarkava, though she cannot yet be considered a blue hen, she has already produced three black-type winners, led by her Group 1-winning son Zarak (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}), who has made strong indications in his fledgling stud career that he will further cement his mother's reputation by becoming a stallion of note.

The champion first-season sire in France last year, Zarak's name has continued to feature among the winners in this early stage of the Flat season. Last week alone, he was represented by a quartet of 3-year-old winners in Sabio Cen (Fr), La Parisienne ((Fr), Caramelito (Fr) and Zagrey (Fr). The first two named hold Classic entries in the Prix du Jockey Club and Prix de Diane respectively. Sabio Cen, trained in Chantilly by Christopher Head, was impressive in his second victory in the Prix Tourbillon at Saint-Cloud last week, racing in the colours of his Spanish breeder Leopoldo Fernández Pujals of Yeguada Centurion.

It was also confirmed this week by William Haggas that Zarak's daughter Purplepay (Fr), who was last seen on the track running third in the G1 Criterium International before selling at Arqana for €2 million to Roy and Gretchen Jackson, has joined his stable and has been given an entry for the Irish 1000 Guineas on May 22.

Zarak is not the only son of Zarkava at stud. His unraced half-brother Zaskar (Fr) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) has recently embarked on his stallion career at Haras de Cercy. Still to come from the family is a 3-year-old full-sister to Zarak named Zarka (Fr) and a Frankel (GB) 2-year-old filly, Zarkala (Fr), both of whom are in training with Francis Graffard.

An Abundance Of French Classic Hopes

Zarak wasn't the only Aga Khan Studs stallion in the news last week as Dariyan (Fr) was represented by a decent Classic prospect and his first group winner in the G3 Prix La Force with Mister Saint Paul (Fr), whose co-trainers Gregoire and Etienne Leenders are as readily associated with jump racing as with the Flat. Bred by Annie and Philippe Delarue, Mister Saint Paul was a €10,000 buy-back at the yearling sales but was later syndicated by his trainers for €25,000 via the recently established Iwantthewinner sales platform.

Not to be outdone, Siyouni (Fr), France's reigning champion sire and stud-mate of Zarak and Dariyan, was also in the limelight with the exciting filly Mqse De Sevigne (Fr), who won Sunday's G3 Prix Vanteaux. The half-sister to Group 1 winner Meandre (Fr) (Slickly {Fr}) races for her breeder Edouard De Rothschild, whose family's Haras de Meautry bred both her dam Penne (Fr) and the mare's unraced sire Sevres Rose (Fr), who stood for a time at Haras du Quesnay.

Thursday's G3 Prix Imprudence saw the return of two exciting juveniles from 2021 in the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac winner Zellie (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) and Malavath (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), who took the G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte before running second to Pizza Bianca in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Running for the partnership of Everest Racing, David Redvers and Barbara Keller, Malavath, representing the Francis Graffard stable, confirmed that she has wintered well after her exciting 2-year-old campaign when holding off Zellie by a length and a half over Deauville's heavy turf. The winner and runner-up are both close up in the betting for the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches behind Juddmonte's Raclette (GB), who is entered for Sunday's G3 Prix de la Grotte.

The Eagle Flies On

The aforementioned Francis Graffard has a big year ahead at the helm of his own stable and that of the Aga Khan at Aiglemont. The trainer has started the season in fine form and another owner-breeder with whom he has enjoyed notable success of late is Baron Georg von Ullmann of Germany's historic Gestut Schlenderhan.

As ParisLongchamp's season got underway on Sunday, Graffard unleashed two unraced 3-year-olds to score on debut, both by the late Schlenderhan-bred stallion Adlerflug (Ger) who died last year in the season after he was crowned champion in Germany for the first time.

Alerio (Ger) got the ball rolling in the Prix Juigne, while the filly Swoosh (Ger) took the Prix de Chaillot. The latter, who has Classic entries in France and Germany, is a full-sister to the G2 Prix de Deauville winner and German Derby runner-up Savoir Vivre (Ire), who is now at stud in France at Haras du Taillis. Their dam is the Listed-winning Monsun (Ger) mare Soudaine (Ger), and this cross of two Schlenderhan stallions was seen again in Germany's first group race of the year, the G3 Walkman Frujahrs-Meile, won by Adlerflug's 4-year-old son Mythico (Fr), winner of last season's G2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen (German 2000 Guineas).

Alerio is also bred along similar lines, with his dam Amazona (Ger), by Dubawi (Ire), being a daughter of Monsun's Preis der Diana winner Amarette (Ger), who is a half-sister to the dam of Melbourne Cup winner Almandin (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}).

Adlerflug, a son of In The Wings (GB) and closely related to Galileo (Ire), did not leave many sons at stud. In addition to Savoir Vivre, Iquitos and Ito remain in Germany, and the full-brother of the latter, another Graffard/Schlenderhan star In Swoop (Ire), has recently joined Coolmore's National Hunt division at Beeches Stud, where, unsurprisingly, he has been very busy.

Think Again – And Again

A decade ago, So You Think (NZ), the mighty wild-maned son of High Chaparral (Ire), completed the rare feat of winning five Group 1 races in Europe to complement his five Group 1 successes in Australia.

Now ensconced at Coolmore Stud in Australia, he pulled off the equally rare–perhaps unique–feat of siring three consecutive Group 1 winners on Saturday during Sydney's Championships at Randwick.

Two of those–the Queen Elizabeth S winner Think It Over (Aus) and Sydney's Queen of the Turf S winner Nimalee (Aus)–are out of daughters of Zabeel (NZ), while the Sydney Cup winner Knights Order (Ire) started his career in Ireland, where he was bred by the Rogers family at Airlie Stud. The 7-year-old's dam Lamanka Lass (Woodman) was 20 when she foaled him and was also responsible for producing the GII Oak Tree Derby winner Dark Islander (Ire) (Singspiel {Ire}), who was trained by the late John Hills.

Brits Abroad

The early 2-year-old skirmishes at Keeneland over the weekend saw a gratifying debut win for Baytown Lovely, by Fast Anna out of the Bernardini mare Meu Amor. As overlooked in the betting as she was at last year's Keeneland September Sale, the filly provided a great start to the Spring Meet for a pair of British expats in trainer Paul McEntee and jockey Jack Gilligan. McEntee plucked Baytown Lovely from the final day of the September Sale for $3,000. She rewarded him with a return of $48,360 from her first racecourse outing.

It is the kind of result also associated with the trainer's both Phil, who is based in Newmarket and is a dab hand at turning sales bargains into multiple winners. There are plenty of members of the McEntee clan spread around the racing world, including another brother, Carl, who runs Ballysax Bloodstock in Kentucky. Phil's son Jake is also currently in America assisting Kenny McPeek, while daughter Grace is a successful young jockey in Britain.

Lucrative BEBF Target For Juveniles

There was welcome news from the British wing of the European Breeders' Fund on Monday with the launch of a £200,000 series aimed at the offspring of middle-market stallions.

Juveniles can qualify for two £100,000 finals for colts and fillies respectively by finishing in the first six from a total of 110 restricted novice or maiden races throughout the turf season in Britain. The aim of the series is “to identify ways to encourage a new avenue for progeny of commercially priced stallions to compete without an expensive series of early closing deadlines”.

The finals take place over seven furlongs, with the fillies' final being staged at Goodwood on Sept. 7, and the race for colts and geldings on Oct. 7 at York.
