Roster stalwart Lope De Vega (Ire) enjoyed another excellent year with his progeny and will remain at a roster-topping €125,000 at Ballylinch Stud in Ireland. Now the sire of 103 black-type winners since reaching his centennial earlier this year, the chestnut also sired a 1.8 million guineas yearling during the Tattersalls October Yearling Sales. No less than 26 of his progeny have won stakes worldwide in 2022, led by dual Group 1 winner turned $2.7-million Keeneland November alum Dreamloper (Ire). He is also the sire of G1 Prix Vermeille heroine Sweet Lady (Fr), G1 Prix de l'Opera victress Place Du Carrousel (Ire) and Hypothetical (Ire), who won the G1 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 in Dubai.

“Lope de Vega once again confirmed that he is a world leading sire with over 50 black-type horses including 4 Group 1 winners in 2022 alone,” said Ballylinch's John O'Connor. “He has achieved success at the highest level on four different continents and is one of those rare sires who can truly be called a global success. 2022 saw Lope de Vega become one of the youngest stallions in history to sire 100 individual stakes winners, reaching the milestone at the same age as Deep Impact (Jpn) and a year quicker than Sadler's Wells and Into Mischief. Ever popular at the sales, Lope de Vega's yearlings sold for up to 1.8 million guineas and averaged €285,000.”

New Bay (GB) sired an additional two new Group 1 winners in Bayside Boy (Ire) and Bay Bridge (GB), and his fee has almost doubled to €75,000. His dual Group 1 winner Saffron Beach (Ire), first in the G1 Prix Rothschild and G2 Duke Of Cambridge S. this term, is set to go through the ring at Tattersalls' Park Paddocks later this month. Successful in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S., Bayside Boy will stand his first season at stud for €15,000.

“New Bay has made an explosive start to his stallion career and confirmed himself as a top-level sire with the winners of the two feature Group 1 races on Champions Day at Ascot,” added O'Connor. “He is one of only six European stallions to sire at least 3 Group 1 winners in 2022. His statistics are impressive too, as only Frankel (GB) and Dubawi have a higher percentage of their runners rated over 100. New Bay's sale season reflected his results on track, with his yearlings averaging €96,000 and making up to 475,000gns.

“Bayside Boy is a very exciting new addition to the Ballylinch roster. He has all the attributes that we look for in a stallion prospect, a top-class 2-year-old and a Group 1 winning miler with an exceptional turn of foot. His sire New Bay is one of the very best stallion sons of Dubawi, and his stakes-winning and group-producing dam is from a high-quality family. He was an outstanding yearling and I'm sure that breeders will be very impressed with both his looks and his athletic walk.”

Arc hero Waldgeist (GB) sees his fee trimmed to €12,500 from €15,000. He is expecting his first runners in 2023. Make Believe (GB), the sire of the globetrotting Group 1 winner Mishriff (Ire), has been lowered to €10,000 from €17,500 in 2022.

“The highest rated horse by Galileo since the outstanding Frankel, Waldgeist has been given an excellent chance to succeed in his stallion career,” said O'Connor. “He is a Group 1 winning 2-year-old that went on to win a vintage Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Waldgeist's first crop was warmly received at the sales, with one in five making over €100,000 and averaging €66,000.

“Make Believe made an outstanding start to his stallion career by siring the exceptionally talented and versatile Mishriff in his first crop. Statistically he is very strong at 3.25% group winners. His yearlings realised up to 220,000gns and averaged over three times his stud fee.”

Listed winner Eydon (Ire) (Olden Times {GB}) will go to Epsom to test his aptitude for the course during the Cazoo Derby Gallops Morning on May 23, Prince Faisal's racing manager Ted Voute revealed. Depending on his results, that will see the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas fourth take his chances in the G1 Cazoo Derby on June 4. Alternatively, he will be re-routed to the G1 Prix du Jockey Club in France one day later.

Voute said, “He'll go on Monday to Epsom and have a little piece of work down the hill and around the turn and into the straight.

“We'll see how he handles the bend and the camber and then the Prince will have a think about what he wants to do after seeing how balanced he is.”

Voute also had an update on Prince Faisal's globetrotting multiple Group 1 winner Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}), and he is targeting the G1 Prince Of Wales's S. at Royal Ascot. Successful in the G1 Juddmonte International S. in August of 2021, the 2020 Prix du Jockey Club hero was fourth in the G1 QIPCO British Champion S. in the autumn. Defending his Saudi Cup title, the 5-year-old entire faded to last of 14 in Riyadh on Feb. 26.

“I said to the Prince the other day that he'd already won the French Derby and he said 'oh well, I don't mind winning it twice,'” Voute added. “Ascot is where we're heading [with Mishriff]. We're just waiting to see whether we'll be ready for then, but it's pretty much the same agenda as last year and we'll just take it one race at a time.

“I'm not sure I really want to take on Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), but if we're going to be a champion then we've got to.”

Also heading to the Cazoo Derby Gallops Morning on Monday are Eydon's fellow Derby contenders Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and West Wind Blows (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) as well as Oaks entrant Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}).

Prince Faisal's globetrotting multiple Group 1 winner Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) has recovered in good order from a last-placed finish in the $20-million G1 Saudi Cup near the end of February, but will not defend his G1 Dubai Sheema Classic title on Mar. 26. The John and Thady Gosden trainee will instead wait until the G1 Coral-Eclipse S. in July. Also, a winner of the G1 Juddmonte International S. at York in August, the 5-year-old entire was fourth in the G1 QIPCO Champion S. on Oct. 16.

Ted Voute, Racing Manager for Prince Faisal, said, “I saw John Gosden at Wednesday at Kempton and he said he was sound and great and he hadn't done any veterinary check-ups yet. He was on Warren Hill and everything appeared fine.

“He definitely wasn't himself in the Saudi Cup. Basically, most of last year, every time he ran in a Group 1 we did a medical check-up afterwards. He is valuable and he is pretty well insured, so we made that a standard practice. I think we are waiting to see if that throws any light on it.

“Looking at it, I think it was multi-factorial. He didn't break as well as last year and David had to fight with him a little bit. Every time you do that he hangs his head on the side slightly and says, 'Oh, I'm not sure I like this'. The track was a little bit deeper and he got some dirt in his face, and he wasn't used to that particularly. I don't think any one of those things beat him, but maybe a combination of all of them might have done.

“I can't pinpoint anything apart from what everybody else can see at this moment. I'm sure John will say something when he has run the tests.”

Voute added, “John did say he is not in any rush. We will try to follow the same plan as last year, so that would be the Eclipse next. We definitely won't go to Dubai. I say that, but last year we said we wouldn't go, then all of a sudden we went to the Sheema Classic.”

Prince Faisal's globetrotting multiple Group 1 winner Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) will undergo a thorough examination once he returns to the UK, according to co-trainer Thady Gosden, who trains with his father John. The 2021 G1 Juddmonte International and G1 Dubai Sheema Classic hero was attempting to become the world's richest racehorse with a title defence of the $20-million Saudi Cup, which was elevated to Group 1 status this term. However, the 2020 G1 Prix du Jockey Club hero failed to fire in Riyadh on Sunday and trailed home last of 14. After his International win last summer, he was fourth in the G1 QIPCO Champion S. at Ascot on Oct. 16.

Gosden said on Monday, “He was hard up on the pace early and he just stopped coming round the bend. He's flying back to the UK today so he'll have full check-up with the vet when he gets home.”

Prince Faisal's Group 1 winner Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}), who took the $20-million Saudi Cup last February, touched down safely in Riyadh on Monday and is ready to defend his title, according to co-trainer Thady Gosden, who trains with his father, John. The race, promoted to Group 1 status for the first time in 2022, anchors the two-day Saudi Cup Meeting and will take place on Saturday. If the 2020 G1 Prix du Jockey Club and 2021 G1 Dubai Sheema Classic victor wins the 1800-metre dirt race, he would become the richest racehorse in the history of the sport. A six-length winner of the G1 Juddmonte International S. last August, the 5-year-old entire reported home fourth in the G1 QIPCO Champion S. at Ascot on Oct. 16.

Thady Gosden, who is also overseeing the Group 3-placed Harrovian (GB) (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}) in Saudi, said, “He landed this morning. The weather is nice and cool enough out here at the moment and he seems well in himself.

“We also have Harrovian in the Neom Cup. He's travelled well too, he ran well behind Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) at Lingfield last time and he's a horse who has always had plenty of ability.”

Prince Faisal's 2021 $20-million Saudi Cup hero Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) is in excellent form ahead of his defence of his crown in the 2022 edition, the first time the race has been accorded Group 1 status. The John and Thady Gosden runner took the G1 Sheema Classic at Meydan last March, and was third in Sandown's G1 Eclipse S. July. Second to Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. on July 24, he bounced back to win the G1 Juddmonte International S. a month later. In his final 2021 start, the 5-year-old was fourth in the G1 Champion S. at Ascot on Oct. 16.

“He's a year older and a little bigger, but he's been training well up to the race so far so let's hope it continues like that,” said co-trainer Thady Gosden. “It's more of a challenge being the middle of winter over here. We've been lucky to avoid the snow so far, but it has been cold and frosty. It's more straightforward in a warmer climate, but we're lucky it hasn't been too cold here.

“We'll get the Saudi hurdle out of the way and then there are two possible races on World Cup night, the Sheema Classic and the [G1 Dubai] World Cup itself and I'm sure Prince Faisal will know which he'd like to go for.

“Then we've got a long season here so there's a few bridges to cross before we start thinking of the Breeders' Cup.”

Another Gosden runner pointed to the Saudi Cup meeting at the end of February is dual Group 1 winner Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). The winner of the 2020 G1 Prince of Wales's S. has not been seen in action since he captured the G1 Dubai Turf at the end of March and is aiming for the Neom Cup on the Saudi Cup undercard.

“Lord North had a bit of an issue and because he's a horse of such calibre we've given him all the time he needs, but he's back training well now and hopefully he gets to the Neom,” said Gosden. “He's bouncing around the place and he's pretty determined to get out there. It looks a tough field and Pyledriver ran exceptionally well in Hong Kong, but he's back to his old self.”

The G1 Coronation Cup winner Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}), who ran a heroic second in the G1 Longines Hong Kong Vase in December, is also training with an eye toward a start in the Neom Cup. His trainers William Muir and Chris Grassick sent the 5-year-old entire out for a spin over the Kempton all-weather prior to leaving for Saudi Arabia.

“We took him to Kempton today to let him have a blow over the surface to cover a distance of ground,” Muir said. “It was just to literally get him away from home for something different and a change of scenery, to perk him up and keep him in good shape.

“The horse is in great shape. It wasn't one of those gallops you want to put a gun to his head and say 'go'. It was just to let us cover the distance.

“Martin [Dywer] rode him and when he got off he said, after riding in races there over the winter, it felt like he broke the track record.”

The La Pyle Partnership colourbearer was under consideration for the Saudi Cup itself, but connections ultimately opted for the Neom Cup on turf.

“We had a long conversation, the owners and myself, and we are aiming to go from here to the Sheema Classic in Dubai,” Muir explained. “We felt to drop him back to a mile-one on dirt and then go back up to a mile and four would be giving different signals. We know a mile and a quarter on turf is fine so we thought we'd do that and then go onto the next target.”

Prince Faisal's Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}), victorious in last season's Saudi Cup in Riyadh, remains on course to defend his title in the $20-million race Feb. 26. The race will be run as a Group 1 for the first time this year.

“That's his target, the Saudi Cup, and as far as I know everything is on track,” said Ted Voute, racing manager to Prince Faisal.

Following last season's victory, the John and Thady Gosden trainee added a win in the G1 Longines Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan. Later that summer, the Irish-bred took the G1 Juddmonte International at York. Given two months off following the six-length score, the 2020 G1 Prix du Jockey Club victor returned to finish fourth in the G1 Champion S. at Ascot Oct.16.

“He's amazing, going back-to-back to Dubai and then Saudi, he's got an amazing constitution,” added Voute. “What I do know is that John said to me that he's thickened out even more and he's even stronger.”

The 5-year-old is currently listed as the second choice behind China Horse Club and WinStar Farm's Life Is Good (Into Mischief), winner of the GI Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Del Mar in November.

“We'll wait and see, I notice we're second favourite to one of the American horses which I like, that takes the pressure off a little bit!”

“Fingers crossed he stays in one piece and gets out there, it would be fun.”

Three-time Group 1 winner Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) will still race next at Del Mar's Breeders' Cup meeting in early November, as long as he remains well. The John and Thady Gosden trainee, who won the G1 Prix du Jockey Club last term, ran fourth in the G1 Champion S. at Ascot on Oct. 16.

He kicked off his season with a victory in the $20-million Saudi Cup on dirt in February and added Meydan's G1 Dubai Sheema Classic back on turf at the end of March. Third in the G1 Coral-Eclipse at Sandown in July, the Prince A A Faisal colourbearer went one better in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot later that month and won the G1 Juddmonte International S. by six lengths at York on Aug. 18.

“John [Gosden] wants everything to be right for us to go, but that [Breeders' Cup] is his next target,” said Prince Faisal's racing manager Ted Voute. “It was spoken about on Sunday, and the early indications were that he came out of the race okay. At the moment we've all been told to act as if we're going, and the horse will let us know whether he's ready.

“John and the Prince will decide where to go. I suspect they'll go to the [GI Breeders' Cup] Turf–although just glancing through the [GI Breeders' Cup] Classic, I'd be happy to consider that race as well.

“It's up the Prince and John really–and it's down to Mishriff and his wellbeing. All the boxes have got to be ticked, and I'm sure John and the Prince will make the right decision.”

Gaining the British group 1 his record demanded in devastating style on Wednesday, Prince Faisal's Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) proved a class apart in one of the finest performances witnessed in the history of York's Juddmonte International. Third to the race's absentee St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) on his European return in Sandown's G1 Eclipse July 3, the high-level worldwide campaigner had moved forward considerably in the subsequent three-week period to be runner-up in the G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot. This represented a further leap, with David Egan able to bask in the moment after launching the homebred on to the lead approaching the two-furlong pole en route to a six-length defeat of Alenquer (Fr) (Adlerflug {Ger}) with Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) half a length away in third. “A lot of people had questioned whether he could do it on home soil, so I'm thrilled for the horse and this is really special,” Egan said. “The way he cruises into his races between the three and the two, I really think he'd have put it up to St Mark's Basilica today. I'm just so privileged to be put in the position to ride for Prince Faisal and ride a horse like Mishriff. Winning the Juddmonte International, it's stuff I've dreamt of my whole life.”

Mishriff, whose early career involved a second on dirt in the Saudi Derby in February 2020 and a four-length success in the delayed Listed Newmarket S., had proved himself at this level on his first attempt by capturing Chantilly's G1 Prix du Jockey Club last July. Following up in the G2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano at Deauville in August, he was only eighth in the G1 QIPCO Champion S. at Ascot in October but was back in the groove returning to Riyadh's dirt to garner the Feb. 20 Saudi Cup. Switching back to turf to take the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic on his first try at a mile and a half Mar. 27, he looked to have run into something special as St Mark's Basilica swept him aside at Sandown. What would have happened in the proposed rematch is conjecture, but John Gosden believes he had him undercooked for that contest and it is debatable whether the Ballydoyle sensation would have been able to live with this version of Mishriff.

Coming out of his tussle with Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in the King George in buoyant form, the bay raced evenly in fourth early alongside Love as they tracked Mac Swiney (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) and Alenquer. Always moving smoothly, Mishriff challenged up the centre of the track as all rivals were flat out and he was soon well beyond reach to recall memories of wide-margin winners of this in Sakhee, Royal Anthem and Assert (Ire) without quite hitting the dizzying heights of Frankel (GB). What he does have over the last three of that quartet is the ability to race with equal prowess on the dirt, which is where comparisons with the highly-talented Sakhee are apt as that Shadwell luminary went so close in the Breeders' Cup Classic 20 years ago. Giant's Causeway was another to lose out in agonising fashion in that monument, while this race's honor roll includes the similarly-versatile duo Singspiel (Ire) and Electrocutionist who managed to win the G1 Dubai World Cup.

“I was in the ideal position, one out and one back and everything worked out perfectly,” Egan said. “He got into a nice rhythm and he stays this flat mile and a quarter really well, so I was inclined to ask him to hit top gear and stretch the opposition. He prob will stay a flat mile and a half really well, so the Arc could suit. I had thought that over a mile and a quarter he had to be ridden prominently, but I couldn't believe how well he cruised into the race. He's a bit of a freak to do what he does on dirt and turf and I can't think of another one.”

John Gosden is looking to give the winner a break now ahead of big end-of-year targets. “I want to freshen him up again, as there's a campaign for him deep into the autumn,” he explained. “There's QIPCO Champions Day and the Arc, but I wouldn't run him on very testing ground. Then the Breeders' Cup Turf and the Japan Cup too. He wouldn't be one for the Breeders' Cup Classic this year. It's a very short straight at Del Mar and that wouldn't suit him at all. He needs a Belmont straight, not a Del Mar one. I think we've seen the finished article. This is the race we've talked about since last December, this has been THE race we've wanted to win with him and make him a stallion.”

Mishriff is currently the last of three foals out of Contradict (GB) (Raven's Pass) alongside the Listed Prix de Saint-Patrick winner Orbaan (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Momkin (Ire) (Bated Breath {GB}) who was second in the G3 Craven S. and G3 Supreme S. The G3 Princess Royal S.-winning second dam Acts of Grace (Bahri) is a daughter of the G1 Prix de Diane heroine Rafha (GB) (Kris {GB}), the famed matriarch who produced the stellar Invincible Spirit (Ire) and fellow sire of note Kodiac (GB) as well as the latter's full-sister Massarra (GB) (Danehill) who is in turn responsible for Gustav Klimt (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). This is also the family of the G1 Pretty Polly S. winner Chinese White (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}) and the dual group 1-winning young sire Pride of Dubai (Aus).
