Just One Time (Not This Time), beaten just once in seven starts, will look to follow up on her win in the Apr. 9 GI Madison S. in the GI Derby City Distaff S. at Churchill Downs Saturday. The 4-year-old filly closed late to win the Jan. 29 GII Inside Information S. by 3/4-lengths over Four Graces (Majesticperfection) in her first outing for trainer Brad Cox and defeated the hard-knocking Bell's The One (Majesticperfection) by that same margin in the Madison. She faces both of those foes again Saturday.

Since the Inside Information, Four Graces was third in the Mar. 12 GIII Hurricane Bertie S. and fifth in the Madison. The 5-year-old captured the 2020 GIII Dogwood S. over the Distaff's track and seven-furlong distance, but is winless in seven starts since taking the 2020 GIII Beaumont S.

Edgeway (Competitive Edge), second in last year's GI Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint, heads east after front-running victories in the Jan. 2 Kalookan Queen S. and Mar. 13 GIII Las Flores S. and will be seeking her first top-level score in the Distaff.

Just One Time (Not This Time) took her career to the next level with her first Grade I score in Keeneland's Madison S. Saturday. Away without incident after being pounded down to 2-1 favoritism late, the lightly raced PA-bred sat towards the back as Lady Rocket (Tale of the Cat) and Kimari (Munnings) knocked heads with longshot Club Car (Malibu Moon) through a snappy first quarter in :22.11. Just One Time has just one beat, Bell's the One (Majesticperfection), as the favorites continued their battle through a :44.50 half-mile. That Grade I winner launched her rally first approaching the far turn with Just One Time four wide to her outside and just off her heels. Lady Rocket and Kimari continued to throw it down in early stretch, but Bell's the One was coming on strongly with Just One Time going even better behind her. Bell's the One hit the front in the final sixteenth, but Just One Time mowed her down in the final strides to win by 3/4 of a length. Kimari bested Lady Rocket for third.

“It worked out today,” trainer Brad Cox said. “Obviously, there was a hot pace up front, but it's not ideal. We'd like to break and be a little more involved. That's how she was before she came to us. We put a starting gate blanket on her today, and honestly it didn't help her a whole lot getting away from there.”

“I was hoping to get a good break and get myself into the race,” Flavien Prat said. “Unfortunately, she broke a bit flat-footed so we went to Plan B and she ran really well in the stretch.”

Kicking off her career with a pair of wins last spring, including Presque Isle's PA-bred Malvern Rose S., Just One Time failed to fire next out in that venue's Lady Erie S. in August. Dominating an allowance on the Penn National dirt in September, she was equally dominant in that venue's state-bred New Start S. Oct. 22 in her final start for trainer Michael Salvaggio, Jr. Bought into by Commonwealth New Era Racing, Just One Time was transferred to Cox and captured Gulfstream's GII Inside Information S. in her first start for that barn Jan. 29.

Pedigree Notes:

Just One Time is the second Grade I winner for red-hot young sire Not This Time, following 'TDN Rising Star' Princess Noor. She is one of six graded winners for that Taylor Made stallion and one of three this year with the other two being GII Louisiana Derby victor Epicenter and GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S. scorer Simplification. The winner is also one of 18 black-type scorers for Not This Time. Just One Time marks six Grade I victors out of a daughter of Speightstown and is one of 17 graded winners and 42 black-type achievers for that broodmare sire. Chad Schumer picked up Ida Clark with Just One Time in utero for $45,000 at the 2017 KEENOV sale for Warriors Reward LLC. They bred her back to Outwork and sold her to McMahon & Hill Bloodstock for $60,000 in the 2019 KEEJAN sale. The resulting foal is a filly now named Hard Place, who was a $200,000 OBSMAR purchase by Spendthrift Farm. She has since produced a juvenile colt by Goldencents and a yearling filly by Runhappy. Ida Clark was bred back to Catholic Boy.

'TDN Rising Star' Kimari (Munnings) looks to successfully defend her GI Madison S. title Saturday at Keeneland. Twice second at Royal Ascot, the bay kicked off 2021 with a win in Oaklawn's Spring Fever S. and took the Madison next out. Sent to the sidelines after that effort, she was ambitiously spotted for her return off that seven-month layoff in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint and she could only manage seventh to stablemate Golden Pal (Uncle Mo). Sent through the ring at Fasig-Tipton's November Sale just days later, Kimari summoned $2.7 million from Coolmore's M.V. Magnier and returned to Wesley Ward's care. She kicked off her 5-year-old campaign with a facile score in a 6 1/2-panel optional claimer on the Gulfstream main track Mar. 3.

Lady Rocket (Tale of the Cat) looks to pick up where she left off at the end of 2021. Earning her black-type victory in the Pink Ribbon S. at Charles Town in August, the dark bay checked in second in the GII Gallant Bloom H. Sept. 26 at Belmont. The Brad Cox trainee captured a sloppy renewal of Belmont's Pumpkin Pie S. Oct. 31 and romped by nine lengths in Aqueduct's GIII Go For Wand H. Dec. 4, earning a gaudy 107 Beyer Speed Figure for the one-turn mile. Cox also saddles the once-beaten GII Inside Information S. winner Just One Time (Not This Time).

Bell's the One (Majesticperfection), winner of the GI Derby City Distaff when run in September of 2020, dead-heated for second behind Kimari in last year's Madison and was fourth in the Derby City Distaff next out. The bay won the Roxelana S. back at Churchill in June and followed suit with a victory in Saratoga's GII Honorable Miss H. in July. A close second in the Open Mind S. beneath the Twin Spires Sept. 18, Bell's the One took this venue's GII TCA S. Oct. 9 and, after skipping the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, rallied to yet another score back in Louisville in the Dream Supreme S. Nov. 13.

Two stakes victories in a day makes for a pretty good afternoon, so that means trainer Wesley Ward had a very enjoyable Friday and Saturday to open the 15-day Keeneland Spring Meet in Lexington, Ky.

On the heels of Friday victories by Three Chimneys Farm's Twenty Carat in the Beaumont (G3) and Ken and Sarah Ramsey's Chasing Artie in the Palisades Turf Sprint, Ward doubled up again Saturday with Ten Broeck Farm's Kimari in the Madison (G1) and his Bound for Nowhere in the Shakertown (G2).

“They are both fine this morning,” Ward said about his Saturday stakes winners, adding that neither would run in a stakes at Churchill Downs during Kentucky Derby Week in four weeks. “That is too quick.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

With his second victory in the Shakertown, Bound for Nowhere boosted his career earnings to $999,857. “But, when you add in his pounds and Euros from his races at Ascot, he's a millionaire,” Ward said.

In notching her first graded stakes victory, Kimari turned back the likes of Grade 1 winner Bell's the One, who finished in a dead heat for second in her 2021 debut.

“She's got a few nicks, but nothing we can't manage,” trainer Neil Pessin said of Bell's the One. “I still wouldn't trade horses with anyone.”

Next for Bell's the One figures to be a chance to repeat in the $500,000 Derby City Distaff (G1) Presented by Kendall-Jackson Winey to be run May 1 at Churchill.

Winning his fourth consecutive graded stakes on Saturday's program at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., Joel Rosario rode Ten Broeck Farm's Kimari to a popular victory in the Grade 1 Madison Stakes. The 4-year-old filly by Munnings came from just off the pace to win by about a length as the 3-5 favorite, covering seven furlongs on a fast main track in 1:21.53. She paid $3.40 to win.

Estilo Talentoso, a 50-1 outsider, and Bell's the One finished in a dead heat for second, with Sanenus fourth and pacesetter Mundaye Call fifth in the field of seven older fillies and mares.

Trained by Wesley Ward, Kimari was winning for the sixth time in 10 career starts. Two of her losses came at Royal Ascot in England, where she finished second in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes in 2019 and second again in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup in 2020. Kimari has won on turf or dirt and on fast tracks and sloppy tracks. She was coming off an easy win in the slop at Oaklawn in the Spring Fever Stakes on Feb. 21, her first start since a third-place finish in the Music City Stakes on turf at Kentucky Downs.

The Madison victory was her first in a Grade 1 race.

Rosario had Kimari in a perfect spot throughout the Madison, sitting just off the lead of Mundaye Call through opening fractions of :22.90, :45.58 and 1:09.29. She took command inside the furlong pole and held sway by three-quarters of a length.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Rosario earlier won the G2 Appalachian Stakes on turf aboard Jouster for Todd Pletcher, the G2 Commonwealth aboard Flagstaff for John Sadler and the G1 Ashland Stakes aboard Malathaat for Pletcher.

Post-race quotes:

Joel Rosario (winning rider of Kimari)

“I wanted to sit a little bit behind the other horses. After she threw her head around a little bit, she was fine. (After she settled), she was running for me then, comfortable, just waiting to let her go.”

Wesley Ward (winning trainer)

“She was a little bit rank. She broke better than she usually does, which put her right into the race. On paper, there really wasn't a lot of speed up front. Everything went our way. As soon as she turned for home, he (Rosario) started riding her. I was a little worried the last part; I wasn't sure seven-eighths (of a mile) is really her game. But this is her track, and this guy (Rosario) is on fire. So we had all the luck with us today.”

Corey Lanerie (rider of Bell's the One, who finished in a dead heat for second with Estilo Talentoso)

“I was very proud of her. Neil (Pessin) brought her over and she was ready, as ready as you can get one for not running. She ran her heart out for me. I'm disappointed we didn't win but very happy with the way she ran. I'm looking forward to her next race, I think she's going to improve more and more.”

Neil Pessin (trainer of Bell's the One)

“(The winner) had a race on us this year. We were coming off the bench. That and maybe if we could have bounced to the outside instead of being inside between horses. I think she's a little better if she's out. That being said, the winner ran a big race. Hopefully we can turn the tables on her over at Churchill (in the Derby City Distaff-G1 on May 1.).”

Paco Lopez (rider of Estilo Talentoso)

“Ran a huge race.”

Bell's the One (Majesticperfection) tops a competitive field of seven in Keeneland's GI Madison S. Saturday. Winning her first graded event at this oval in the 2019 GII Raven Run S., the bay captured the GIII Winning Colors S. at Churchill last May and checked in third behind Guarana (Ghostzapper) in last year's renewal of this event, which was held in July last year due to the pandemic. She rallied to a nose defeat of GI Kentucky Oaks victress Serengeti Empress (Alternation) in Churchill's GI Derby City Distaff S., also delayed from May to September, and closed 2020 with a late-running third behind champion Gamine (Into Mischief) in the GI Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint S. in Lexington Nov. 7.

The fleet-footed Kimari (Munnings) should provide the early pace Bell's the One needs, but could prove not for catching. Runner-up in the 2019 G2 Queen Mary S. at Royal Ascot, the 'TDN Rising Star' kicked off 2020 with a victory in Oaklawn's Purple Martin S. on the main track in April and returned to the Royal meeting for her next start, where she finished second in the G1 Commonwealth Cup S. June 19. Third in the grassy Music City S. at Kentucky Downs Sept. 15, the bay scored a decisive win in a sloppy renewal of the Spring Fever S. back in Hot Springs Feb. 27. Kimari is three-for-three on the dirt, including her 15-length debut graduation at Keeneland in the spring of 2019.

Sconsin (Include) will likely fly under the radar due to the presence of the top two, but could certainly get a piece. Runner-up in the GIII Beaumont S. at this oval in July, the bay was third to the re-opposing Mundaye Call (Into Mischief) in the Audobon Oaks at Ellis Aug. 9. She broke through at the graded level with a rallying score in Churchill's GII Eight Belles S. Sept. 4 and was fourth in the Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint last out. The homebred prepped for this with a five-panel bullet in :59 2/5 at Fair Grounds Mar. 22.

Also worth a look is GI La Brea S. victress Fair Maiden (Street Boss), who looks to rebound off an eighth-place finish in the GII Santa Monica S. Feb. 13.

The Madison, one of six graded stakes on Saturday's 11-race program, will be run as the 10th race with a 6:02 p.m. post time. First post time Saturday is 1:05 p.m.

Trained by Neil Pessin, Bell's the One will be making her 2021 debut in the Madison. Winner of the 2019 Raven Run (G2) here, Bell's the One will be ridden by Corey Lanerie and break from post position four.

Also exiting the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint and making her 2021 debut is Sconsin, who finished a half-length behind Bell's the One in the Breeders' Cup. Owned by Lloyd Madison Farms IV and trained by Greg Foley, Sconsin will be ridden by James Graham and break from post position six.

Another Grade 1 winner in the field is Godolphin's homebred Fair Maiden, winner of the La Brea in December at Santa Anita.

Trained by Eoin Harty, Fair Maiden was a troubled fourth in last fall's Qatar Fort Springs here on the Breeders' Cup undercard. Brian Hernandez Jr. has the mount and will break from post position seven.

The field for the Madison, with riders and weights from the rail out, is: Sanenus (Javier Castellano, 118 pounds), Estilo Talentoso (Jesus Castanon, 118), Mundaye Call (Florent Geroux, 118), Bell's the One (Lanerie, 120), Kimari (Joel Rosario, 118), Sconsin (Graham, 118) and Fair Maiden (Hernandez, 123).

Following a gritty effort to win the Grade 1 Madison on July 11 at Keeneland, Three Chimneys Farm and Hill n Dale Equine Holdings' Guarana is scheduled to seek a fourth career Grade 1 triumph in the $300,000 Ballerina presented by NYRA Bets on August 8 at Saratoga.

The seven-furlong event over the main track for older fillies and mares is a Breeders' Cup “Win And You're In” event and provides an automatic entry towards the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint on November 6 at Keeneland.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

“I think that's a logical target,” said Doug Cauthen, Vice Chairman of Three Chimneys Farm. “Like with all of them, we let them guide us there but it's definitely on the radar. Hopefully, she can have a good summer and fall.”

Trained by Chad Brown, Guarana boasts a consistent 6-5-1-0 record with three of her victories taking place against Grade 1 competition. In her most recent effort, the Ghostzapper filly commanded the pace early on and was confronted to the outside by Mia Mischief at the top of the stretch who appeared to be in winning contention at the three-sixteenths. Guarana refused to be denied and battled back along the rail to win by a half-length.

“I think she gained even more fans for her courage,” said Cauthen. “It's hard to get passed up and then come back. She was definitely more than game that day. She's really a very special filly and special to everybody here because she's a homebred and she's just brilliant.”

Following a sensational career debut last April at Keeneland, Guarana followed up by defeating Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks winner Serengeti Empress in the Grade 1 Acorn at Belmont Park en route to a two-turn score in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks at the Spa.

“She's multi-dimensional,” Cauthen said. “She showed that talent last year winning one turn races and winning going two turns at Saratoga as well.”

Guarana is out of the Distorted Humor broodmare Magical World whose dam was the 2005 Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Pleasant Home. Her fourth dam was Grade 1-winner Maplejinsky, who produced Hall of Famer and 1994 Champion Older Female Sky Beauty.

“She's got a lot of the scope and the mare has plenty of scope and quality,” Cauthen said. “She [Magical World] is a Distorted Humor mare that's bigger than most Distorted Humor mares. Just quality and class that runs through the line.”

Fans of Guarana can look forward to seeing her Pioneerof the Nile half-brother debut later in the year. This year, her dam gave birth to a Gun Runner colt and is currently in foal to Quality Road.

“She has a Pioneerof the Nile 2-year-old with Chad that from all hopes is special, but he's got to go out there and prove it. I think he'll be a late summer, early fall horse if all goes well,” Cauthen said.

An odds-on favorite for the fourth time in her six-race career, Three Chimneys Farm and Hill 'n' Dale Equine Holdings' Guarana had to fight off a stubborn Mia Mischief to win Saturday's Grade 1 Madison Stakes at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., by a half-length.

The victory was the 100th career Grade 1 win for trainer Chad Brown, who saddled his first runner in 2007 and picked up his initial Grade 1 in 2011 when Awesome Feather won the Gazelle Handicap.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Ridden by Jose Ortiz, Guarana covered seven furlongs in 1:21.70 on a fast track. Mia Mischief finished second, with Bell's the One 3 1/4 lengths back in third and Wildwood's Beauty fourth in the field of eight older fillies and mares.

Guarana is a 4-year-old by Ghostzapper out of Magical World, by Distorted Humor. She was bred in Kentucky by Three Chimneys Farm.

Guarana, breaking from the five post, led the way early, with Mia Mischief and Ricardo Santana Jr. putting on the pressure to her outside through an opening quarter mile in :22.95 and a half in :45.92. Approaching the furlong pole, Mia Mischief edged ahead of Guarana, six furlongs in 1:09.60, but Guarana came back on along the inside in the final sixteenth to get the win.

The victory was the fifth in six career starts for Guarana and her second of 2020 from as many outings. Unraced at 2, she won two G1s in 2019–the Acorn and CCA Oaks. Her only defeat came when second to Street Band as the 11-10 favorite in the G1 Cotillion at Parx Racing, her final start of the year.

Brown was not at Keeneland, but told the track's publicity department hitting 100 Grade 1 wins is “right up there near the top. It's a whole body of work from 12½ years now of training. It has to do with my team of co-workers, owners and horses both present and past. They all contributed to the 100 Grade 1s. God willing if everything stays intact, we'll work on the next 100. But we're going to enjoy this for now.

“(Guarana) showed her heart,” Brown said. “She showed that she's a very special horse, which we've known for a long time. I'm just so happy for the ownership group, especially Mr.(Goncalo) Torrealba (of Three Chimneys Farm), the original sole owner of the horse and the breeder. I've been associated with him and his family and horses for 17 years now going back to Bobby Frankel.

“To (get the 100th Grade 1 win) with one of his horses is really special. He's a real fine man. Very loyal. He was the first one to call me and congratulate me.”

“To get another win over Keeneland's track ahead of the Breeders' Cup (with Guarana) is very important too. And my team has done a really good job. Our division in Palm Meadows had (Guarana) all winter and prepared her for Churchill. I left her with my assistant Whit Beckman and the Churchill division, and they've done a terrific job. I'm really proud of them.”

Keeneland’s GI Madison S. was a battle between ‘TDN Rising Stars’ Guarana (Ghostzapper) and Mia Mischief (Into Mischief) from start to finish, but in the end it was Guarana who won the gutsy brawl. Favored at 1-2, Guarana went straight to the front and was hounded by Mia Mischief, who was let go at a surprising at 8-1, through early splits of :22.95 and :45.92. Mia Mischief drew even with Guarana at the top of the stretch and briefly headed her younger rival, but Guarana battled back in the final sixteenth, turning back her elder for a half-length success. It was the 100th Grade I victory for Eclipse winning-conditioner Chad Brown.

“Well during the course of the race, what happened was it unfolded sort of how I feared with Mia Mischief having the better post on the outside of us and being able to hound us a bit,” said Brown. “I thought turning for home that the post really did us in this race and I was started to get a little disappointed. But I could see at the sixteenth pole that she was finding her stride again and I think seven [furlongs] is maybe a tick far for the other filly. We were able to come back on her. She showed her heart. She showed that she’s a very special horse, which we’ve known for a long time.”

He continued, “To [get the 100th Grade I win] with one of Mr. Torrealba’s horses is really special. He’s a real fine man. Very loyal. It’s right up there near the top. It’s a whole body of work from 12 1/2 years now of training. It has to do with my team of co workers, owners, and horses both present and past. They all contributed to the 100 Grade Is. God willing if everything stays in tact, we’ll work on the next 100. But we’re going to enjoy this for now.”

Devastating the field by 14 3/4 lengths in her Keeneland unveiling last April, Guarana romped by sixth in Belmont’s GI Acorn S. last June and followed suit with a win in the nine-panel GI CCA Oaks six weeks later. Finishing second to Street Band (Istan) as the favorite in the GI Cotillion S. Sept. 21, she was subsequently shelved for the season and resurfaced at Churchill June 4 with a dominant optional claimer score in the slop June 4.

Pedigree Notes:

Guarana is one of 12 top-level scorers by Ghostzapper and one of 41 graded winners for the Adena stallion. She is bred on the same Ghostzapper/Distorted Humor cross as fellow Grade I winner Molly Morgan. Daughters of Distorted Humor are responsible for 45 graded stakes winners. Magical World, a daughter of GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Pleasant home (Seeking the Gold), is also responsible for stakes winner and GSP ‘TDN Rising Star’ Magic Dance (More Than Ready). Her 2018 colt by Pioneerof the Nile brought $2.1 million from e Five Racing at Keeneland September. The 10-year-old mare did not have a foal in 2019, but had a Gun Runner colt Feb. 25 of this year. This is also the family of MGISWs Point of Entry (Dynaformer), Pine Island (Arch) and Tale of Ekati (Tale of the Cat).
