There were 79 winning tickets in Friday's Stronach 5 with each returning $1,297.70.

The Stronach 5 featured races from Pimlico Race Course, Santa Anita Park, Golden Gate Fields and Gulfstream Park as well as an industry-low 12-percent takeout. Four of the five winners returned under $10 with the longest shot in the sequence going off at $6.90-1.

The Stronach 5 began with Pimlico's ninth race, a mile claiming event on the turf won by My Man Pots N Pans ($9.60) for trainer Kelly Rubley. Santa Anita's third race was next, an allowance event at six furlongs on the turf for fillies and mares that featured a heavy favorite in Lalic. The 4-year-old filly didn't disappoint at 6-5 for a $4.60 return.

Golden Gate's third race, the third leg of the Stronach 5, featured eight 2-year-olds going five furlongs after two late scratches. The winner was the 6-1 shot Love Candy ($15.80), a son of Danzing Candy trained by Ed Moger Jr.

The Stronach 5 concluded with two races from Gulfstream Park. In the eighth race, a turf event for allowance optional claimers at a mile, it was Drapes ($9), a daughter of American Pharoah, going to the winner's circle under jockey Edwin Gonzalez. In the ninth race, the final sequence of the Stronach 5, it was the 3-5 favorite Izhefrosted ($3.40) going gate-to-wire for an easy win.

Canterbury Park's 65-day Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse race meet, which begins Tuesday, May 18, attracted 248 entries in 27 races, not including 12 also-eligible entries, for the first three days of the season. With nine Thoroughbred races each on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at the Shakopee, Minn., track, field size averages 9.2 horses per race.

Exceptional participation by trainers can be attributed to a population of more than 1,100 Thoroughbreds and a $1,000 bonus, paid directly to the owner of each starter. The horse population is expected to increase over the coming weeks while the bonus extends to all open overnight races during the month of May.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=23 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=177 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

“I have a feeling this is going to be a great meet,” racing secretary Rob Junk said. “We have a lot of trainers returning, and some new stables as well. I expect they came to race.” Mac Robertson, leading trainer in 13 previous Canterbury Park meets, has entered 19 horses opening week. Canterbury mainstays Mike Biehler, Tony Rengstorf, Troy Bethke and Bernell Rhone have a strong presence as has been the case for more than 25 seasons. Robertino Diodoro, who last year had fewer horses than past meets, this summer intends to fill more than 50 stalls. Joel Berndt, 2020 leading trainer, also will have a full barn in Shakopee this summer.

Trainer Justin Evans, unseen at the Shakopee, Minn. racetrack since 2008, returned with 25 horses. Dick Cappellucci and Bennie Woolley, Jr., winner of the 2009 Kentucky Derby with Mine That Bird, have stables at Canterbury for the first time.

Track officials announced in April that a $.50 Pick 5 wager with an industry-low 10 percent takeout would return to the 2021 the wagering menu. The industry-low takeout rate was introduced last year and the success of that wager led officials to introduce a traditional $1 Pick 6 also with an industry low 10 percent takeout.

In 2020, the Pick 5 averaged $79,500 in wagering handle per pool and totaled more than $4.1 million throughout the season. Both were substantial increases over 2019 when the wager attracted an average Jackpot Pick 5 Pool of $8,366 and season-total wagering of slightly more than $550,000.

Canterbury Park all-sources handle in 2020 amounted to $68.4 million, easily setting a Canterbury Park record by more than $20 million in total handle and an increase of 68 percent over the prior year, all while conducting 12 fewer days of racing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, average daily handle increased in 2020 by a staggering 110 percent when compared to the 2019 meet.

Twenty-one jockeys were listed on the overnight for May 18 not including last season's leading rider Ry Eikleberry who will serve a three-day suspension stemming from a riding foul occurring at the end of the 2020 season. Several accomplished riders have joined the colony including journeymen Lindey Wade, Ty Kennedy and multiple graded stakes winning rider Ruben Fuentes who most recently rode at Santa Anita.

Racing will be conducted Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 5 p.m. CT and select holidays and Sundays at 1 p.m. CT through Sept. 16. More information is available at canterburypark.com.

Canterbury Park officials announced today that the Shakopee, Minn., racetrack's industry-low 10 percent takeout rate on the $.50 Pick 5 wager will return for the 2021 racing season and that a $1 Pick 6 wager, also with an industry-low 10 percent takeout, will be offered daily. Both the Pick 5 and Pick 6 will be traditional wagers distributing the full pool less takeout to bettors selecting the first-place horse in each leg of the wager.

In conjunction with a modified 2020 racing calendar as a result of COVID-19, Canterbury instituted the low takeout rate on a traditional Pick 5 wager at the beginning of last season, abandoning the jackpot format offered since 2017. The Pick 5 averaged $79,500 in wagers per pool in 2020 and totaled more than $4.1 million throughout the season. Both were astronomical increases over 2019 when the wager attracted an average Jackpot Pick 5 Pool of $8,366 and season-total wagering of slightly more than $550,000.

“There is no doubt that the low takeout in the Pick 5 was a factor in attracting new players to our racing product,” Canterbury's track analyst Brian Arrigoni said. “Those new players liked what they saw with our weeknight mix of turf and dirt races and solid field size and not only bet into that low-takeout pool but also found appealing wagering opportunities across other pools as well.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid=23 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=177 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

The weekday-focused calendar in 2020 and the modified wagering menu resulted in record all-sources wagering of more than $68 million during the shortened 53-day season, the fewest days run at Canterbury Park since 1998. All-sources wagering increased by more than 68% as compared to 2019 when a 66-day meet was conducted. Controlling for the reduction in race days as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, daily all-sources handle increased by nearly 110% and was spurred by an increase in the average Pick 5 Pool of nearly 850%.

“I believe the Pick 6 with this low takeout will appeal both to customers that favor a more traditional Pick 6 wager and those that are looking for reduced takeout wagers. Moving away from jackpot bets is good for the horseplayer and will bring even more bettors into our pools. The $1 minimum is certain to generate strong payoffs as well as exciting carryover opportunities,” Arrigoni said.

Both of these pari-mutuel wagers require the participant to select in order the winners of consecutive races, five in the Pick 5 and six in the Pick 6, placing the bet before the first race in the series begins. In the event no tickets correctly identify all winners, 75 percent of the pool is carried over to the following racing program and 25 percent is paid as a consolation.

The 2021 season will be conducted on a Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday schedule with additional holiday racing Memorial Day, Labor Day and July 3. Post time on Sundays is 1:00 PM (CDT). Tuesday through Thursday racing begins at 5:00 PM. More information is available at www.canterburypark.com.
