18.00 Kempton, £6,800, Nov, 2yo, 8f (AWT)
Charlie Appleby representative KALIDASA (GB) (Frankel {GB}) hit the heights at last year's Tattersalls October Book 1 fixture when knocked down to Godolphin for 2.8-million guineas. The March-foaled bay is out of dual stakes-winning G1 Prix de l'Opera third So Mi Dar (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), herself a full-sister to MG1SW sire Too Darn Hot (GB) and multiple Group 1-placed distaffer Lah Ti Dar (GB). His 10 rivals include Lordship Stud's John and Thady Gosden trainee Fighter Command (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who is out of a stakes-winning full-sister to G1 Derby hero Serpentine (Ire).

17.30 Kempton, £6,800, Nov, 2yo, 8f (AWT)
Godolphin newcomer EL CORDOBES (IRE) (Frankel {GB}), who fetched a whopping 2-million guineas at last year's Tattersalls October Book 1 sale, is out of a half-sister to G1 Haydock Sprint Cup heroine Tante Rose (Ire) (Barathea {Ire}). Opposition to the Charlie Appleby-conditioned debutant includes Marc Chan's Sardinian Warrior (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), who is a son of G1 Phoenix S. and G1 Matron S. heroine La Collina (Ire) (Strategic Prince {GB}), from the John and Thady Gosden stable.

13.00 Lingfield, £6,600, Nov, 2yo, f, 8f 1y (AWT)
George Strawbridge's homebred FRIENDLY SOUL (GB) (Kingman {GB}), a John and Thady Gosden trainee, is kin to six black-type perfomers headed by elite-level winners We Are (Ire) (Dansili {GB}), With You (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and Call The Wind (GB) (Frankel {GB}). Opponents include her once-raced stablemate Twin Peaks (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who is a full-sister to G1 Oaks and G1 Prix de Royallieu heroine Anapurna (GB).

12.30 Lingfield, £6,600, Nov, 2yo, f, 8f 1y (AWT)
Qatar Racing's hitherto unraced KALEIDOSCOPE (GB) (Kingman {GB}) is a half-sister to G3 Athasi S. winner Lightening Quick (GB) (Frankel {GB}) out of G1 Cheveley Park S. victrix Lightening Pearl (Ire) (Marju {Ire}). The John and Thady Gosden representative encounters nine contenders in this unveiling.

HOW THEY FARED
18.30 Wolverhampton, £9,950, Mdn, 2yo, 7f 36y (AWT)
Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum's Robeena (GB) (Calyx {GB}), a Roger Varian-trained half-sister to last year's GI Belmont Oaks Invitational heroine McKulick (GB) (Frankel {GB}), ran on well from off the pace to finish 5 3/4 lengths behind the winner in third.

Sandwiched in between the Derby and Oaks trials of Chester and York, Lingfield stages its own prep races for both Epsom Classics on Saturday before Classic action unfolds again in France on Sunday. It was only four years ago that Anthony Van Dyck (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Anapurna (GB) (Frankel {GB}) revived the Listed Derby and Oaks Trials by doubling up on the first Friday and Saturday in June and with the major yards represented close inspection is required.

In the Derby Trial, the two colts who went to post for the Listed Newmarket S. just eight days ago, Circle Of Fire (GB) (Almanzor {Fr}) and Waipiro (Ire) (Australia {GB}), venture forth again to try and squeeze into what could be an open contest next month. While Waipiro was unable to take part at Newmarket after Tom Marquand was kicked, The King and Queen Consort's Circle Of Fire showed up with promise in the 10-furlong contest and it is notable that he is backing up uncharacteristically for a Sir Michael Stoute charge. Obviously connections are still harbouring an outside dream of the Royal colours being carried at Epsom, while Waipiro's trainer Ed Walker could be about to relive the buzz that his 2020 Lingfield Derby Trial winner English King (Fr) (Camelot {GB}) provided.

“The tight nature of this track I don't think will suit many Derby-type horses, but he's a well-balanced horse and I would rather run on the all-weather than heavy ground,” he said. “We don't have a heap of mile-and-a-half horses to compare him to, so we need to compare them to other peoples. So we go there knowing as much as you do really.”

One For Inquiring Minds

If ever a son of Kingman (GB) was going to have a genuine Derby contender, it would be in the mould of Anthony Oppenheimer's Inquiring Minds (GB) whose dam Precious Ramotswe (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) was successful in the 14-furlong G3 Bronte Cup. Impressive on his 10-furlong debut at Newcastle 11 days prior to this test, the John and Thady Gosden trainee is another who is being sent back into action unusually quickly for a stable renowned for patience. “This will tell us what kind of standard he is,” Oppenheimer said of the homebred, who bids to provide the stable with its first winner of this since Percussionist (Ire) in 2004. “The King Edward is the sort of race one thinks he might enjoy–I would think he will be more suited to Ascot. I think he is quite useful, but I don't think he's number one in the stable, so I don't think we can expect too much.”

A Valid Point?

With the switch to the Polytrack for the two Classic trials, it may be that proven form on the surface counts for a lot. For all the proven class of Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum's TDN Rising Star and G1 Fillies' Mile third Bright Diamond (Ire) (El Kabeir) and Ballydoyle's G3 Prix Penelope third Be Happy (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), Godolphin's pair Eternal Hope (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) and Sunset Point (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) have won at Chelmsford and at this track respectively. The latter, who scored by seven lengths on her 3-year-old bow in a Windsor handicap last month, is a daughter of Hidden Gold (Ire) (Shamardal) who captured the Listed River Eden Fillies' S. over this track and surface and who hails from the ultimate Epsom family of Galileo (Ire), Sea The Stars (Ire) and Masar (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}). “Both don't look out of place in the field and this should give us a gauge for their future,” trainer Charlie Appleby said.

Draws Made For Poulains and Pouliches

ParisLongchamp's G1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Poulains and G1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Pouliches took their final shape on Friday, with manageable fields of 10 for both negating the worst effects of the draw. On that front, there was good news for Wathnan Racing as their high-profile acquisition Isaac Shelby (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) is in stall one for the colts' Classic next to Malcolm Parrish's likely favourite American Flag (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}). Aidan O'Brien is to be represented only by 'TDN Rising Star' Hans Andersen (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who breaks from stall six which is also the draw handed to the stable's sole Pouliches representative Never Ending Story (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}).

Inside Post For Blue

Yeguada Centurion SL's G1 Prix Marcel Boussac and G3 Prix de la Grotte scorer Blue Rose Cen (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) was handed stall one for the Pouliches, with Jean-Claude Seroul, Haras d'Etreham and Riviera Equine's Ritournelle (Fr) (Camelot {GB}) next door in two. While Blue Rose Cen should be sent forward from that favourable draw, Ritournelle who was beaten a head by Showay (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) in the G3 Prix Imprudence at Deauville will be arriving late on her return to a mile. “I did regret not running her in the 1000 Guineas, given that the ground at Newmarket was riding soft and because she loves a straight course,” trainer Jerome Reynier admitted. “Ritournelle has done nothing but improve with each race, her preparation has gone well and so we can go to into the race calmly and confidently.”

Can Rouget Turn It Around?

This season has hardly gone to plan for Jean-Claude Rouget, with most of the Classic trials for once passing him by, but in The Aga Khan's Valimi (Fr) (Teofilo {Ire}) and White Birch Farm's Kubrick (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) he has two live Poulains contenders. Valimi, who took April's course-and-distance Prix Machado conditions event, has the GI Breeders' Cup Mile hero Val Royal (Fr) in his pedigree while Kubrick's half-brother Raging Bull (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) has two top-level successes to his name at the trip. “Valimi and Kubrick did their final serious pieces of work on the grass at Deauville racecourse on Tuesday–the ground was very soft and they were not visibly inconvenienced by it,” Rouget said. “Both were giving me concern in this respect beforehand, especially Kubrick. He made a good return [when fourth] in the Prix Djebel and I was satisfied with his performance. Valimi improved for his return effort at Saint-Cloud and very quickly set the record straight last time.”

Testing Ground For Sunday

Charles de Cordon, who has the task of preparing the track at ParisLongchamp, is expecting the mile Classics to be stamina tests. “It has rained a lot in the Parisian region during the first part of the week, but the track has been drying out,” he said. “We expect the ground to ride very soft on Sunday and anticipate a penetrometer reading of around 3.9. There will be a 10-metre strip of fresh ground and the open-stretch, five metres out from the running rail, will also come into play.”

Saturday's Derby Trial card at Lingfield has been transferred from the waterlogged turf course to the venue's all-weather track, the British Horseracing Authority confirmed on Wednesday.

The area has been subject to heavy rainfall, with more in the forecast, which resulted in Lingfield officials and the BHA moving the races off the turf course. Carded that day are the G3 Chartwell Fillies' S. and the Listed Oaks Trial Fillies' S., as well as the Listed Lingfield Derby Trial. The latter pair will be contested over 1 1/2 miles, instead of a half-furlong short of the Classic distance because of the surface switch.

A statement from the BHA said, “The British Horseracing Authority has confirmed that Saturday's card at Lingfield Park will be staged on the all-weather.

“A BHA inspection of the course on Wednesday morning found the turf track to be unraceable due to waterlogging.

“It is considered unlikely that conditions will have improved sufficiently by Saturday to allow any races to take place on the turf safely.

“Therefore, also taking into account the weather forecast suggesting further rain, the BHA has made the decision to switch the surface at this time to offer certainty for connections to confirm their running plans.”

The G1 Betfred Oaks is slated for June 2.

“She has come out of the race really well and she looks fantastic,” said Channon, who will run Caernarfon (GB) (Cityscape {GB}) in the G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas on Sunday, of the Mrs. P. Shanahan and Emily Magnier-owned filly. “I'm really happy with the way she is progressing.

“We will probably have a look at one of the Oaks trials, maybe Lingfield [on Saturday week] or Newbury [Fillies' Trial S., May 20], I would have thought, in a couple of weeks' time.

“She is in great form and we will aim her at one of those, I should think.”

As part of the ARC £1,000,000 All-Weather Bonus initiative, the Horse of The Year bonus has been won by the Grant Tuer-trained Walking On Clouds (Gale Force Ten), who will receive £100,000 after accruing 48 points on the Horse of The Year leaderboard. The 4-year-old's All-Weather season included five wins, four seconds, two thirds and one fifth-placed effort.

In its inaugural season, the ARC £1,000,000 All-Weather Bonus began Oct. 18 before ending on All-Weather Finals Day, Apr. 7. There are cash prizes for horses, who finish in the first 20 positions on the Horse of The Year leaderboard. The full results for the Horse of The Year competition will be confirmed Good Friday.

“I think it's been a great competition,” said Tuer. “The rules of the competition, the makeup of the competition and the monthly prizes with 20 prizes in the Horse of The Year competition has been fantastic. It's got everybody interested, certainly in the North where I am. Everybody is talking about it and it has been great fun. The extra money is fantastic.”

He added, “We're going to try and get into the six-furlong race at Lingfield on All Weather Championships Finals Day. It is a 0-95, so we're not guaranteed a run. If we did get a run we would definitely go there.”

Meydan's G1 Dubai Turf calls again for the now-veteran Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) as HH Sheikh Zayed bin Mohammed Racing's pride and joy marked his 2023 debut with a comfortable success in Saturday's G3 BetUK Winter Derby at Lingfield. Reported by jockey Robert Havlin to be further ahead than 12 months ago when he came up against the formidable presence of Alenquer (Fr) (Adlerflug {Ger}) in this, the 8-11 favourite travelled with gusto anchored behind the early leaders. Taking time to wind up approaching the home straight, the Gosdens' flagbearer overpowered Tyrrhenian Sea (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) 150 yards out en route to an authoritative 3 1/4-length success.

Havlin said of the winner, who along with his 2021 Dubai Turf and 2022 dead-heat in the same race also boasts the 2020 G1 Prince of Wales's S. on his resume, “That was like clockwork. His work has been a lot brighter and I think that was a better performance than last year, even though today did not have the depth of last year's race. He was a bit laboured through the final furlong and a half here last year, whereas today I was always confident he was going to pick up. He is better on galloping tracks, coming off a strong pace, but his class shone through. He has been showing us a bit of that at home–it was as if he was back to being a four or five-year-old. Hopefully he can get back on song and win the Dubai Turf outright this year.”

Pedigree Notes
Lord North's pedigree is a decorated one, with his dam Najoum (Giant's Causeway) being a granddaughter of the GI Santa Anita Oaks heroine Hail Atlantis (Seattle Slew). Responsible for the sires Stormy Atlantic and Mr. Katowice, her stakes-placed daughter Divine Dixie (Dixieland Band) produced the GI Blue Grass S.-winning sire Bandini and is the second dam of the GI Ashland S. scorer Out For A Spin (Hard Spun). Also related to the GI Summer S. winner Decorated Invader (Declaration Of War) and that sire's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf hero Fire At Will, Najoum has a 2-year-old filly by Too Darn Hot (GB) and a yearling full-brother to Lord North.

There is a faint scent of the approaching Flat season in the air on Saturday as the Gosdens' stalwart Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) enjoys his seasonal bow in Lingfield's G3 BetUK Winter Derby. Not seen since finishing a close fourth in the G1 Eclipse at Sandown in July, the 7-year-old is at the scene of his defeat in this 12 months ago warming up for a third consecutive G1 Dubai Turf.

Robert Havlin will be on board the consistent performer and he said, “Lord North seems really well. I have ridden him in his last two pieces of work and I think he is a little sharper than he was coming into the race last year. We are using this as a prep for the Dubai Turf again but I am hoping for a real big run. He just feels that bit more switched on than he was this time last year. He is the best horse in the race by far and hopefully he can show that.”

Also representing the Gosdens is the 2021 winner Forest Of Dean (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}) and Harrovian (GB) (Leroidesanimaux {GB}) who races for Lord North's owner HH Sheikh Zayed bin Mohammed Racing. The former will be partnered by South African jockey Collen Storey, while Roger Varian pitches in Flaxman Stables' 2022 Easter Classic runner-up Tyrrhenian Sea (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}).

Set for Lingfield on Mar. 10 and Southwell on Mar. 24, the trials provide a race day scenario without the pressure of a competitive race meeting. Slots in the trials can be booked on the C&J Equine website.

Craig Witheford, of C&J Equine, said, “The Race Day Trials provide a unique experience for unraced and experienced racehorses, with a race day scenario, without the pressure of a competitive race meeting. Statistics alone have proved that our trials produce many debut winners and help horses gain confidence on a racecourse. Our aim is to educate and prevent future problems for our client's horses, whilst providing an enjoyable experience for racehorses embarking on their career.”

“It's all about helping the horse achieve its ultimate goal,” said Adam Johnson, UK Thoroughbred Manager for Connolly's Red Mills. “Whether that's by providing our customers with the best in equine nutrition or by supporting the development of the young racehorse through initiatives such as the Race Day Trials. We are delighted to be able to continue supporting the racing industry.”

6th-Lingfield, £100,000, Hcp, 1-21, 4yo/up, f/m, 10f (AWT), 2:05.12, st.
AL AGAILA (IRE) (f, 4, Lope De Vega {Ire}–L'Amour de Ma Vie {GSW-UAE, SW-Fr, GSP-Eng, $322,632}, by Dansili {GB}), sent off the 10-11 favourite for this Winter Oaks having won the course-and-distance Winter Oaks Trial with ease last month, tracked the leading trio throughout the early stages. Earning the advantage approaching the furlong pole, the bay held on to score by a head from Morgan Fairy (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}). Simon Crisford said, “It was a tactical race and she would have benefitted from a stronger pace, as I think a real strong gallop will see her to better effect. Throughout the summer, she started growing and we had to give her some time, but she is doing very well now. We will speak to her owner Sheikh Khalid [bin Hamad Al Khalifa] and see if he is interested in coming back here for the [Feb. 25 G3] Winter Derby. We will be running against Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) and Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), so it will be like the [G1 King George all over again! Entries for Dubai World Cup Night close on Monday and she will certainly get an entry for the [G1] Dubai Turf.” The winner is the sole runner from two foals of racing age so far out of the dam, who captured the G2 Balanchine and was runner-up in the G2 Duke of Cambridge S. and G2 Cape Verdi. A half to the GII Marathon S., GIII Greenwood Cup and GIII Hawthorne Gold Cup winner Scuba (Tapit), her 2-year-old full-brother to the winner was a €75,000 purchase by Barry Lynch at the Goffs Orby. Sales history: €240,000 Ylg '20 ARDEAY. Lifetime Record: 6-3-1-2, $101,809.
