Dullingham Park is the new sponsor of the G2 Clipper Mile on the first day of the Irish Champions Festival at Leopardstown on Sept. 9, Leopardstown Racecourse announced on Thursday.

One of Newmarket's oldest establishments, Dullingham Park has recently been renovated and expanded as part of owner Steve Parkin's Clipper Group. The one-mile race was upgraded to Group 2 status in 2014, and has been won in the past by Parkin's Space Traveller (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), who now stands at stud at Ballyhane Stud in Ireland.

Ollie Fowlston, Managing Director of Dullingham Park, said, “This is a wonderful opportunity to be involved in such a prestigious race meeting, it is a race that Steve Parkin has a close affinity with due to him owning past winners Suedois and Space Traveller. Dullingham Park is a new venture and we look forward to welcoming visitors from both Ireland and the UK. Irish Champions Festival is a remarkable meeting and we could not be more thrilled to support one of the biggest days in the Irish racing calendar.”

Tim Husbands, CEO of Leopardstown Racecourse, added, “We are delighted to welcome Dullingham Park to Leopardstown as sponsor of the G2 Dullingham Park S. Steve Parkin has had a long and successful association with Irish Champions Festival as an owner and sponsor and we are thrilled that he has chosen this elite racing festival to showcase his new stud farm.”

Aidan O'Brien trainee Ylang Ylang (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Shambolic {Ire}, by Shamardal), who made all for a 'TDN Rising Star' rosette with an impressive 2 3/4-length debut tally tackling seven furlongs at the Curragh in her only prior start, maintained her perfect record with a carbon-copy performance in Thursday's G3 Jockey Club Of Turkey Silver Flash S. at Leopardstown.

The prohibitively priced 1-4 favourite was slick from the inside gate and seized an early two length advantage in this black-type bow. Untroubled through halfway, she was shaken up with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and kept on powerfully under urging in the closing stages to comfortably hold Vespertillo (Fr) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) by 1 1/2 lengths. She extends O'Brien's record in the seven-furlong contest to an unmatched 13.

“She had a good draw, so obviously Ryan [Moore] used it again, and the next day we'll take our time with her,” the trainer revealed. “She hit the gates the first day she ran and Ryan did the right thing. Today she had the draw and she did the same thing. He said she was probably doing plenty for him in front and he gave her a beautiful ride. We're delighted, Ryan was very happy with her and he said she ran straight through the line. She's a very low mover and he felt that the ground was a little bit deep, but he was very happy with her. Hopefully now it'll be the [G2] Debutante before the [G1] Moyglare and we'll let her sit in and relax. She's very genuine, she tries very hard and wears her heart on her sleeve. Natural is a good way to describe her.”

Pedigree Notes

Ylang Ylang, a 1.5-million guineas Tattersalls Book 1 graduate, is the first of three foals out of Listed Pretty Polly S., Listed Height Of Fashion S. and Listed Chalice S. placegetter Shambolic (Ire) (Shamardal). The March-foaled bay's dam, who has also produced a yearling colt by Kingman (GB) and a weanling filly by Siyouni (Fr), is a half-sister to dual G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup-winning multiple Hong Kong champion Comic Strip (GB) (Marju {Ire}) and GI Flower Bowl Invitational and GI Diana S. heroine Laughing (Ire) (Dansili {GB}). Shambolic is also a half-sister to the unraced Blinking (GB) (Marju {Ire}), whose descendants include stakes-winning G3 Lillie Langtry S. third Twitch (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}), stakes-winning G3 Premio Dormello third Romsey (GB) (Mukhadram {GB}) and G3 Sweet Solera S. third Mottisfont (Ire) (Adaay {Ire}).

The contest will run from Thursday, June 8 to Thursday, Aug. 24. An overall prize of €3,000 will be awarded to the Plusvital Leopardstown Leading trainer during this eight-week span. In addition, the Irish equine science company will provide significant prizes for the winner and placed horses. In addition, three races will be sponsored by Plusvital, and provide trainers and breeders of the first, second and third finishers in those races with Plusvital supplements and genetic testing packs. The winning breeders will also receive an invite to the final day of the Series in August.

Second in Leopardstown's G1 Coolmore America Justify Matron S. when just running out of runway in the one-mile contest last term, Paddy Twomey trainee Pearls Galore (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}–Pearl Banks {GB}, by Pivotal {GB}) left nothing to chance in this year's renewal back at the Foxrock venue and led every step of the way this time around to secure her first victory at the highest level. The Matron victory also booked Pearls Galore's ticket to the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Keeneland in November.

Haras de Saint Pair's consistent 5-year-old mare had followed up last year's reversal with a second in ParisLongchamp's G1 Prix de la Foret before bringing the curtain down on 2021 with a close-up sixth in Del Mar's GI Breeders' Cup Mile. Back in tune when annexing April's Listed Heritage S. over this course and distance on seasonal return, she added to that with a narrow score in the Curragh's G2 Lanwades Stud S. the following month, but was out of luck when second in July's G2 Minstrel S. back at the Co. Kildare track and fifth behind Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) and Tenebrism (Caracaggio) in Deauville's Aug. 2 G1 Prix Rothschild last time.

Sharply into stride to set the tone from flagfall, the 16-1 chance was bustled along at the top of the straight and maintained a relentless tempo under a drive inside the final quarter mile to exact revenge on her Rothschild opponents in style, hitting the line with a three-length advantage.

“The best race of her life was this race last year, she's been in good form and I said to Billy [Lee] we'd put the cheekpieces on her,” explained Twomey. “She's five years old and does what she has to do. It didn't work out for her in France [last time] where the ground was quick and it was a straight mile. This is more her jazz, ease in the ground and a turning mile. She was walking around the pre-parade ring and throwing herself around the place and I knew she was in good form. I told Billy, with the cheekpieces on, I don't think we should be taking her back and it worked. She has the ability to travel at a high pace and burn off horses. That's her true running there and I'm delighted for her.”

Ballingarry, Co. Limerick, native Lee added, “She has been very good to me. The race went nicely and, when she bounced from the gates well, I was happy to let her lead the way. She likes it here, she likes the turning mile and, when I asked her in the straight, she picked up well. She's all heart and kept galloping all the way to the line. I thought for a few strides at the top of the straight Hollie Doyle [aboard Saffron Beach] might have had me, but my one picked up again. I was quite surprised we won by three lengths, but she just kept galloping away and galloped them into the ground. These home Group 1s are very hard to win and I'm delighted she's won her Group 1. Her career deserved it and she has it now.”

Pearls Galore, who becomes the 21st Group 1 scorer for her sire (by Green Desert), is the fifth of seven foals and one of five winners from as many runners produced by G3 Dirk Elbers-Preis victrix Pearl Banks (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), herself a daughter of G1 Prix Vermeille heroine Pearly Shells (GB) (Efisio {GB}).

Irish Champions Weekend got under way with Leopardstown's €100,000 Listed Ballylinch Stud Irish EBF Ingabelle S. over seven furlongs, for 2-year-old fillies, which went the way of Ger Lyons and Colin Keane for a second straight edition after Juddmonte's Zarinsk (GB) (Kodiac {GB}–Pavlosk, by Arch) posted a 2 1/2-length success from Library (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Zarinsk, who backed up a May 22 debut success at the Curragh with a fourth in the G2 Airlie Stud S. back there the following month, was unable to feature at the business end of July's G3 Silver Flash S. over this course and distance when stumbling badly at the start and gained compensation with a pillar-to-post victory here. Breaking sharply to seize immediate control, she was shaken up when threatened by her closest pursuer Library passing the quarter-mile marker and kept on strongly under mild urging thereafter to hold that rival with plenty to spare for a career high.

“Our fillies have been pretty precocious this year, they have all won their maidens well and she is still a work-in-progress,” said trainer Ger Lyons. “Colin [Keane] is quite confident about her getting a mile, I'll have to talk to the owners and I could see us putting her away until next year. We do a lot of work in the stalls with our horses at home and our modus [operandi] is don't take away any advantage. Wherever they bounce you ride them from and he's kept it simple. She's not overly big, but has a lovely big stride and has a lot of maturing to do. It's the biggest weekend of the year for us guys in Ireland, it's a very special day and there is always a good buzz to it.” Keane added, “We would have taken a lead, but we got it on our own terms and we went nice, even fractions. I thought we picked up well from the bottom of the straight, she ran through the line and I couldn't pull her up. She's a lovely actioned filly, her stride is very long and she's a very willing filly.”

Zarinsk, who becomes the 81st black-type winner for her sire (by Danehill), is the first stakes scorer out of Listed Michael Seely Memorial S. victrix Pavlosk (Arch), herself a full-sister to Listed Prix Casimir Delamarre winner Rostova. Pavlosk is also a half-sister to the dual Group 3-winning G1 Gran Premio di Milano third Exhibit One (Silver Hawk), herself the dam of G3 Chunichi Shimbun Hai victor Maitres d'Art (Jpn) (Zenno Rob Roy {Jpn}) and Listed Sandringham H. runner-up Auction (Ire) (Mr. Greeley). Zarinsk's third dam Bold Empress (Diesis {GB}) is kin to multiple Group 1-winning sire Zafonic (Mr. Prospector) while her descendants also include stakes-winning G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches second Irish Rookie (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}), G2 Maurice Lacroix Trophy victrix Daring Love (Ger) (Big Shuffle) and last week's G2 Oettingen-Rennen scorer Dapanago (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}). Pavlosk has a yearling filly by Kingman (GB) and a weanling full-sister to Zarinsk to come.

Aidan O'Brien trainee Alfred Munnings (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}–Best In The World {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) was all the rage for Friday's seven-furlong Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden at Leopardstown and justified market support, and then some, with a dominant debut performance, earning a TDN Rising Star rosette by 4 1/2 lengths on his birthday. The stable had won the contest in recent years with G1 Dewhurst S.-winning sire War Command (War Front) and G2 Vintage S.-winning sire War Decree (War Front) and also prepared Gleneagles (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) to finish fourth in 2014. The eventual winner was away sharply and shadowed the leader in a close-up second through halfway. Sent to the front off the home turn, the 8-11 favourite quickened beyond recall soon after passing the quarter-mile marker and maintained a high tempo under minimal encouragement in the latter stages to easily outclass Segomo (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) by daylight.

“Aidan [O'Brien] was very happy with that and the plan is to go for the [Listed] Chesham [S. at Royal Ascot],” revealed Ballydoyle representative Chris Armstrong. “He was very professional, he knew his job and delivered on the promise he's shown so far. He's a good mover and has the pedigree behind him. Fingers crossed now he has a good chance in the Chesham. Hopefully, it's a proper maiden and he's won it very impressively.”

Alfred Munnings, half-brother to a weanling colt by Wootton Bassett (GB), is the third of four foals and second winner out of G3 Give Thanks S. victrix Best In The World (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the first being last year's runaway G1 Epsom, G1 Irish and G1 Yorkshire Oaks-winning sensation Snowfall (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). Best In The World is a full-sister to three pattern-race winners, namely MG1SW G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe-winning superstar Found (Ire), GSW G1 Epsom Oaks and G1 Irish Oaks placegetter Divinely (Ire) and G3 Noblesse S. victrix Magical Dream (Ire). Found's first foal is G2 Vintage S. victor and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and G1 St James's Palace S. placegetter Battleground (War Front). The May-foaled bay's second dam is G1 Matron S. and G1 Lockinge S. heroine Red Evie (Ire) (Intikhab).

Coolmore and Westerberg's sophomore filly Above The Curve (American Pharoah) caught the eye when overcoming a slow getaway to finish strongly for third in a one-mile Leopardstown maiden last October. Back at the Foxrock venue for Wednesday's 10-furlong Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden, a contest won in 2019 by MG1SW distaffer Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal), she stamped her class on a field stacked with well-bred individuals to earn 'TDN Rising Star' status with an eyecatching display. The 6-5 favourite was more in focus at the break this time and settled off the tempo out wide in midfield through halfway. Making smooth headway into contention on the home turn, she quickened in taking fashion to seize control approaching the final furlong and kept on strongly under mild coaxing in the latter stages to easily outpoint Thoughts of June (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) by 2 3/4 lengths.

“We think a lot of her,” revealed trainer Joseph O'Brien of the June 3 G1 Epsom Oaks and July 16 G1 Irish Oaks entry. “She had a really good run last year and has an amazing pedigree. We couldn't ask for more and we'll see where we go now, but we think she's an [Irish] Oaks type. She's very big so we'll manage her gently, maybe something like the [G3] Blue Wind [at Naas next month] would suit. We won't throw her in at the deep end and we'll take baby steps with her. She really is huge, in a way she's nearly too big, and we'll have to manage her correctly. She hasn't done anything wrong so far anyway. I don't think she will be an Epsom [Oaks] filly and I think we will look at the Curragh [for the Irish Oaks], but it is early days to be targeting that.”

Above The Curve is the third of five foals and second scorer out of an unraced sibling of eight black-type performers headed by MG1SW sire Giant's Causeway (Storm Cat). She is a full-sister to G3 Irish 1000 Guineas Trial and G3 Weld Park S. third Thinking Of You and her dam Fabulous (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who was bred to Justify last year, has a 2-year-old filly and yearling filly by Justify to come. Descendants of the April-foaled bay's MGSW second dam Mariah's Storm (Rahy), herself a half-sister to G1SP sire Panoramic (GB) (Rainbow Quest), also include MG1SW sires Gleneagles (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Decorated Knight (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), Classic heroines Joan of Arc (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Marvellous (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), MG1SW distaffer Happily (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and elite-level performers Vatican City (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Coolmore (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Taj Mahal (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Leopardstown Racecourse appointed Jane Hedley as its new Racing and Operations Manager, a position she will take up during the forthcoming National Hunt season and Dublin Racing Festival. A former marketing and nominations executive for Shadwell and yard manager at Mark Johnston Racing for six years, she also served as Clerk of the Course Warwick, Nottingham and Market Rasen racecourses, in addition to positions at Jockey Club Racecourses, including Newmarket, Cheltenham and Aintree. More recently, Hedley was interim general manager at Nottingham.

“Jane is hugely experienced, passionate, highly knowledgeable and well respected within the industry and we are delighted to be welcoming her to Leopardstown Racecourse,” Tim Husbands MBE, CEO of Leopardstown Racecourse, commented.

Hedley added, “The chance to join the team at Leopardstown Racecourse, one of the leading Flat and National Hunt tracks, was too good an opportunity to pass up and I look forward to playing my part in reinforcing that status within the industry. Its heritage and sense of place, combined with the fantastic racegoer experience it already provides, makes it somewhere I'm really looking forward to being part of in the new year.”
