Assael Espinoza won the most races out of any rider with 93 trips to the winner's circle from 419 starts, equating to a 22%-win rate while his mounts finished in-the-money 56% of the time.

“I'm very thankful for all the owners and trainers who have given me an opportunity to ride their horses,” said Espinoza. “Ever since I got to Golden Gate, people have been really good to me. There are a lot of great people supporting me.”

Trainer Jonathan Wong successfully defended his 2022 Winter/Spring meet training title with the most wins out of any trainer at the 2023 meeting, winning 56 races from 231 starters. Wong posted a 19%-win clip and earned total purse prizes of $1,063,272.

Rodriguez, 32, holds an 11-win advantage over five-pound apprentice Jeiron Barbosa in the rider standings, 58-47, with eight races remaining. Rodriguez is named in four races Friday, while Barbosa is named in six. It will be the first riding title in Maryland for Rodriguez, who also leads with $1.9 million in purse earnings from 209 mounts. He led the Delaware Park standings in 2021 and 2022, averaging 124 wins.

Ness, 48, leads Brittany Russell in wins, 34-28, heading into closing day where Ness has horses entered in two races (Russell has three entered). With $1.219 million in purse earnings, Ness ranks second to Russell ($1.236 million). It will be the sixth Maryland training title for Ness and first since Pimlico Race Course's 2019 spring meet. Others have come at Pimlico in spring of 2012 and 2015 and Laurel Park fall 2011 and 2012.

Ness is coming off a 2022 season where his horses earned a career-best $10.3 million in purses to go along with 326 wins, the fourth time he has topped the 300 mark including a personal best 395 in 2012. He ranked third in North America in wins in 2022 and 2021 (311) and fifth in 2020 (224). Ness earned his 3,900th career win with Time to Cruise March 22 at Parx, where he has dominated the trainer standings since 2020.

Laurel will open its 21-day spring meet Apr. 1 and race Thursday-Sunday through May 7 with the exception of Easter Sunday Apr. 9. Spring post time will be 12:40 p.m. with a special 12:10 p.m. post time on Kentucky Derby Day, May 6.

The all-sources wagering of $208,907,655 was a 15.41% increase over the 2021 fall meet record of $181,009,626. It was the fourth consecutive season of record handle at the track. The numbers do not include whole-card simulcasting at Keeneland.

“This fall meet embodied everything our founders envisioned for Keeneland–a place where families and friends could gather and enjoy great horse racing–all heightened by anticipation for the Breeders' Cup,” said Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin. “The race meet was special in every way: idyllic weather, terrific racing, and special events like Make-A-Wish Day, Heroes Day, and Teacher Appreciation Day that celebrated many deserving people. We thank everyone involved in making the Fall Meet a success and look forward to the fun continuing as we host the World Championships next weekend.”

On-track wagering for the fall meet totaled $15,351,232, up from last year's $15,162,221 (a 1.25% increase). Fall Stars Saturday (Oct. 8) set records for fall meet single-day all-sources handle ($21,695,896, surpassing the $20,926,640 on the equivalent day in 2021, a previous record) and Pick 5 wagering ($1,431,736, bettering last year's $1,255,080). In addition, a Keeneland record payoff of $72,863.72 for a 10-cent superfecta wager occurred Oct. 20.

All the fall meet leader titles came down to the wire, with all decided on Saturday. Gary and Mary West won their first Keeneland leading owner title with four wins over the 17 days, including the GII Hagyard Fayette S. with West Will Power (Bernardini) on closing day. West Will Power also pushed his trainer, Brad Cox, to the trainer title with 11 total wins. It was Cox's third consecutive fall training title and fourth Keeneland title overall. Todd Pletcher and Wesley Ward tied for second with 10 wins apiece.

Luis Saez nabbed his second Keeneland riding title by winning three races on closing day, including the final race of the meet. He just edged Tyler Gaffalione 21-20. Gaffalione had six stakes wins during the fall meet, one shy of Pat Day's single-season record of seven.

Other highlights of Keeneland's fall meet included:

• Average daily purses of a record $1,168,120, up 32.66% from $880,511 during the 2021 Fall Meet
• Average daily all-sources handle of $12,288,686, up from $10,647,625 in 2021 (15.41% increase)
• Average daily on-track handle of $903,014, up from $891,895 in 2021 (up by 1.25%)

A far more telling statistic for the head of the vast Ballydoyle training operation was that the victory of Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}) in the G2 Hardwicke S. brought up O'Brien's 900th victory in Group/Graded races in a career which has so far spanned almost 30 years and is surely still full of running. 

The run-up to the big 900 had been provided perhaps most notably by Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the Gold Cup, a race in which so many of the Ascot faithful would have loved to see one last hurrah at the meeting for Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}). Instead, perhaps we have welcomed a new staying king from a family replete with top-level black type and just the sort of horse with which O'Brien has excelled over the years, with eight wins in the Gold Cup alone, four of those having been delivered by the mighty Yeats (Ire) (Sadler's Wells).

Overall, however, the results from Royal Ascot 2022 highlight the versatility and general dominance which has been key to O'Brien's training career. Changingoftheguard (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was perhaps fortunate that Grand Alliance (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) snatched defeat from the jaws of a likely victory when veering badly left in the closing stages of the G2 King Edward VII S. The more straightforward winner was bouncing back from a fifth-place finish in the Derby following his emphatic win in the G3 Chester Vase.  That win came three hours after Meditate (Ire) had her trainer dreaming of more Group 1 days to come when winning the G3 Albany S. on a day when John Magnier made a rare visit to Ascot. The daughter of No Nay Never also gave O'Brien and her Coolmore sire a juvenile stakes double at the royal meeting following the second-day victory of Little Big Bear (Ire) in the Listed Windsor Castle S.

Just a few weeks after O'Brien set a new record for the number of British Classics won when Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) became his 41st in the Oaks, by Saturday evening he had claimed his eleventh leading trainer title at Royal Ascot. His five winners were all ridden by Moore, who secured his ninth title as leading jockey with seven winners.

Speaking at Ascot on Friday, Magnier, the man responsible for installing the then-successful young jumps trainer O'Brien at Ballydoyle, said of his phenomenal tally of stakes winners, “That does the talking and he doesn't have to do it. It's refreshing to see a modest approach, I think.”

The same can be said for his stable jockey. Members of the media attempting to extract a word or two out of Ryan Moore may not often find his modesty, which often borders on terseness, refreshing, though they may take heart from the fact that the jockey is similarly sparing in his debriefs when being interviewed by his sister Hayley on Sky Sports Racing. 

Twelve years ago Moore won his first Classic on Snow Fairy (Ire) in the Oaks. His memorable comment when being congratulated on this success was, “Well it's not the Derby, is it?” The next day he won the Derby on Workforce (GB). No cartwheels were forthcoming. 

And that's the measure of Moore. He does his job with the minimum of fuss, saving his all for his horses and his paymasters. For this observer at least, Moore's complete lack of showboating is one of the best things about him – second only to his undeniable talent, and those are two attributes which so perfectly mirror O'Brien.

In contrast, Kimura was earning his first Woodbine jockey title. The 22-year-old is the first Japanese-born rider to achieve the feat. He notched 138 wins at the meet from 717 starts, including wins in eight black-type events, with $6,360,203 in earnings. The Eclipse Award winner as North America's outstanding apprentice, Kimura also won the Sovereign Award equivalent in both 2018 and 2019.

“It's a special achievement, and it was one of my dreams,” said Kimura. “Everybody wants to be a leading rider, but it's not easy. We just need great riding skills and good horses, good support from the trainers and owners for the whole season to be able to get the title. This year, I'd say I improved, and I got good support from trainers and owners. I appreciate that help for me to get the riding title.”

Barber was the leading money-winning owner at Woodbine for the third straight year although official statistics were not immediately available. Live racing will return next spring to the Toronto oval with opening day tentatively scheduled for the penultimate weekend in April.

Pletcher notched 13 wins during the meet, with a total scoreboard of 52-13-8-7 and earnings of over $1.55 million. His 25% win rate was also highlighted by five stakes, including three on Saturday: the GI Cigar Mile with Americanrevolution (Constitution), and the joint Remsen and Demoiselle wins while partnered with Ortiz, Jr. It was Pletcher's first Aqueduct fall title since 2018. Christophe Clement and Chad Brown tied for second in the trainer standings with 11 wins each.

Klaravich Stables won the fall meet leading owner title for the second straight year with five total wins and a final record of 17-5-0-5. With earnings just shy of $260,000, it was the stable's fourth owner title on the NYRA circuit this season. Michael Dubb and Repole Stable tied for second with four wins each.

The 56-day winter meet at Aqueduct will kick off Thursday, Dec. 9. First post on the eight-race card is 12:50 p.m. ET. The meet will feature 46 stakes races worth nearly $6 million in purses and will conclude Sunday, Mar. 27.

Ortiz, Jr., 29, finished the meet with a record of 76-21-7-12 and earnings of more than $1.44 million, winning at a 27.63% clip. He garnered five stakes victories during the Big A fall meet including a triumph aboard Peter Brant's Serve the King in the Grade 2 Red Smith on November 20 as well as the Key Cents when piloting the Pletcher-trained Classy Edition.

On Saturday, Ortiz, Jr. added three more stakes victories to his ledger when piloting the Brad Cox-conditioned Lady Rocket [G3 Go for Wand], as well as Mo Donegal [G2 Remsen] and Nest [G2 Demoiselle] to their respective wins for Pletcher on Cigar Mile Day.

Despite not riding in New York on Sunday, Ortiz, Jr., who was in his native Puerto Rico to ride at Camarero, maintained his lead over all other riders, with Jose Lezcano and Luis Saez tying for second with 17 wins apiece.

Pletcher scored five stakes wins during the meet, spearheaded by Americanrevolution capturing the G1 Cigar Mile presented by NYRA Bets. In addition to his trio of Cigar Mile Day scores, he saddled Repole Stable's Never Surprised to victory in the Gio Ponti on November 26 and Classy Edition in the Key Cents.

Pletcher boasted a ledger of 52-13-8-7 for the meet with earnings in excess of $1.55 million, while winning at a 25% clip. It was his first Aqueduct fall title since 2018, when he tied with Rudy Rodriguez with a dozen victories apiece.

“We've had a good fall,” Pletcher said. “We had a solid Belmont meet and we were fortunate enough to have a good Aqueduct meet as well so we're thankful. The main thing is you just want the horses to perform to their capabilities. We're fortunate enough to train horses like these. You want to do the best you can with them and it's gratifying to see them do so well.”

Pletcher finished two victories ahead of both Christophe Clement, who captured the 2020 fall meet title at the Big A, and Chad Brown, who won this year's Saratoga and Belmont fall titles.

Seth Klarman's Klaravich Stables captured their fourth owner title on the NYRA circuit this season when taking the Aqueduct fall meet title for the second straight year.

Last year, Klaravich Stables tied with Repole Stable for the 2020 fall meet, each owner earning five wins apiece. Klaravich Stables mimicked that amount of victories this fall meet, which included maiden scores with the Chad Brown-trained Inflation Adjusted, Core Conviction, and Marketsegmentation.

Klaravich Stables, NYRA's overall leading owner for the past two years, exited the fall meet with a 17-5-0-5 record and purse earnings of nearly $260,000. Michael Dubb and Repole Stable tied for second with four wins each.

Live racing resumes on Thursday when Aqueduct will kick off the 56-day winter meet which runs through Sunday, March 27. The winter meet will feature 46 stakes races worth nearly $6 million in purses. First post on the eight-race card is 12:50 p.m. Eastern.

Already, the 29-year-old Ortiz is in elite company as one of just four riders to lead the country's premiere winter meet standings three consecutive years, along with Jeff Fell (1977-79), Jorge Chavez (1999-2001) and Javier Castellano. Hall of Famer Castellano won a record five straight before being unseated by Luis Saez in 2016-17.

Ortiz ended Saez's two-year reign to start his own streak in 2018-2019 and, after flirting with Saez's single-season standard of 137 wins that year before ending with 135, surpassed it in dramatic fashion by guiding Known Agenda to a 2 ¾-length upset of the Curlin Florida Derby (G1) presented by Hill 'n' Dale Farm at Xalapa for No. 138.

Represented by agent Steve Rushing, Ortiz would finish with 140 wins including the $1 million Pegasus World Cup Turf (G1) with Colonel Liam who, like Known Agenda, is trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher. They also teamed up with Fearless in the WinStar Gulfstream Park Mile (G2), Con Lima in the Herecomesthebride (G3) and Always Shopping in the La Prevoyante (G3).

In all, Ortiz won 14 stakes last winter including the Gulfstream Park Sprint (G3) on Mischevious Alex. On Feb. 6, he won six of 12 races, one victory shy of the single-day track record shared by Saez, Tyler Gaffalione, Paco Lopez and Hall of Famer Jerry Bailey.

“It was a great meet last year for me. What I can I say?” Ortiz said. “I have to say thank you to all the people for their help. Without their help and their support, it wouldn't be possible, honestly. I want to go and have fun and enjoy my time there. It's great weather, it's great racing and, hopefully, we can do it again.”

Ortiz heads to Gulfstream off a November to remember that began at Del Mar, where he earned his fourth straight Bill Shoemaker Award as top jockey during the Breeders' Cup World Championships following wins in the Dirt Mile (G1), Turf Sprint (G1) and Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2). He also finished second in the Turf (G1).

From there he returned to New York and won three more stakes including the Red Smith (G2). On Nov. 23, he won three stakes at Zia Park in New Mexico for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen, including the Zia Park Derby and Oaks; went to Kentucky for the Clark (G1) where he finished off the board with Pletcher's Dr Post; and was back in California to ride for regular client Chad Brown. While there, he won the Jimmy Durante (G3) for a second straight year.

“I've been doing good, thank God. My agent does a great job,” Ortiz said. “Those are three great trainers and three people that we ride for. We went and did the best we could and I'm happy.”

Ortiz has been voted the Eclipse Award as North America's champion jockey each of the last three years, and will be prominent in the discussion again in 2021. Entering December, he ranked first in North America in wins (327) and has won 57 stakes, 33 of them graded, including 10 Grade 1 races. He was second to Joel Rosario in purses earned with $28,534,585 and holds the single-season mark of $34.1 million set in 2019.

This year marks Ortiz's seventh straight with at least 300 wins and eighth in a row topping $20 million in purse earnings. He picked up his 3,000th career victory Oct. 7 at Belmont Park on Saratoga Kisses for owner-trainer Rudy Rodriguez, a total that included 92 wins in his native Puerto Rico, according to Equibase.

“When you ride against the best, you learn. You learn a lot,” Ortiz said. “I like those kinds of races. When you're riding against the best jockeys in the world you learn a lot from them even when you get beat. We have some experience from that, and that makes you better.”

Following the 2020-2021 Championship Meet, Ortiz finished second during Belmont Park's spring meet by two wins to younger brother, Jose, as well as to Saez at Saratoga. Winner of the Belmont fall meet by a single victory over his sibling, Ortiz was tied with Jose Lezcano atop Aqueduct's fall meet standings.

“I feel good,” Ortiz said. “I want to go [to Gulfstream] and have the same support from the trainers and owners, I hope. I know if I have the same support they've given me that I can do something. I feel positive. I'm looking forward to it.”

The 87-day Championship Meet featuring 76 stakes, 37 graded, worth $14.26 million in purses opens Friday and runs through Sunday, April 3.

Cabrera hit that magic mark when he won the final race of the night on a nine-race card, momentarily checking in the stretch before blasting through a hole down the lane aboard heavy 2-5 wagering favorite My Golden M ($2.80 to win). That gave him five wins for the evening, and 1,500 in his career.

Cabrera has won Remington Park riding titles the past three years, 2018-2020, and is well on his way to his fourth consecutive trophy. His five trips to the winner's circle on Saturday night gave him 69 for the meet. He now leads Stewart Elliott, in second place, with 46 wins.

Cabrera bookended the card with a win in the first race booting home Quinn Ella ($4.40) at 1-1/8th miles on the turf. The 4-year-old filly, owned by Joe Castillo of Porter, Texas, and trained by Ronnie Cravens III, took the opener by three-quarters of a length at 6-5 odds. The race was for 3-year-olds and older in second-level allowance conditions.

The second Cabrera win of the night did not come until the fourth race when he smiled for the camera after Mr B Quiet ($8.80) broke his maiden by eight lengths at 3-1 odds. The 2-year-old gelding by Mr. Besilu, out of the Quiet American mare Bin Quiet, was the most impressive winner for Cabrera, pulling away at the end, beating the bunch of $7,500 maiden claimers by a city block. He is owned by Linda and Michael Mazoch and Austin Gustafson, who also trains that winner.

Cabrera then won the sixth, seventh, and ninth races to complete his huge run. He had mounts in eight of nine races Saturday night. His winner in the sixth was Fred'stwirlincandy ($6.40), who won for the second outing in a row. The 6-year-old gelded son of Twirling Candy, out of the Wimbledon mare Daphne Angela, is one of the most versatile runners at Remington Park, winning on a muddy main track Oct. 27, and then taking to the lawn to win Saturday against $25,000 claimers over the turf course. He went off at 2-1 odds and won by 1-1/4 lengths. Cabrera rode him in both victories. It was his second win of the night for Cravens III. This winner is owned by Jeffrey Hoffman of Wichita Falls, Texas.

The young rider from Jones, Okla., was on fire at this point, taking down the seventh race with Bobbin Tail ($4), the prohibitive even-money favorite. That 3-year-old filly by Tale of Ekati out of the Indian Charlie mare Bobbin' Robin, was one of Cabrera's closest calls of the night, beating conditional allowance horses at the mile distance by a mere neck. In fact, there was an objection made by second-place finisher Itsallinthenotes' jockey, Jose Medina, but the stewards ruled there would be no change. Itsallinthenotes was trying to pull off the major upset as she went off at 74-1 odds, the longest shot by far in the field. Cabrera rode this winner for owner Dream Walkin Farms (Toby Keith) of Norman, Okla. The filly is trained by Kenny Smith.

Cabrera closed out the night with the final trip to the winner's circle aboard My Golden M, a 4-year-old gelding by My Golden Song, out of the Early Flyer mare Early M. She is owned by Kathy Stephens of La Verna, Texas. His chances of getting that fifth win on the night and 1,500th of his career seemed almost inevitable riding this horse at 2-5 odds. It was also the second victory for the top jock by the length of a neck. Cabrera had to ride hard in this spot after being shuffled back and being pulled out wide to rally down the middle of the track. The winner is trained by Hector Echeverria.

Cabrera began his North American riding career in 2013 with 46 wins. His best year thus far was 2018 when he won 236 times. This year has been his top year for horses' earnings starting Saturday night at $6,876,135 from 987 starts for an average earnings mark of $6,967 per start. That compares to 2013 when his horses earned an average $1,372 per start.

The total career earnings for Cabrera, from 8,528 starts tops $34.6 million.

Remington Park racing continues next week with a new schedule. Monday and Tuesday racing in the afternoons gets underway for four weeks, beginning Nov. 15 & 16. The first post time is set for 2:30 pm on Mondays and Tuesdays. Each week will conclude with night racing on Fridays and Saturdays, with a regular first post of 7:07 pm. All times are Central.

Inflation Adjusted's win in Sunday's 10th race finale gave Seth Klarman's Klaravich Stables its eighth win of the meet, which broke a three-way logjam allowing Klaravich to become leading owner of the Belmont Park fall meet for the fifth consecutive year. Flying P Stable and Michael Dubb each finished with seven wins over the course of the fall meet.

Brown extended his dominance of the Belmont fall meet, posting a record of 29-22-18 from 111 starters with earnings of more than $3.7 million. The four-time Eclipse Award-winner for Outstanding Trainer has won at least a share of the Belmont fall meet every year since 2012. Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher concluded the fall meet with 16 wins. Christophe Clement and Linda Rice registered 16 wins each to tie for third.

NYRA's year-ending leading trainer six years running, Brown saddled eight graded stakes winners at the fall meet, racking up a pair of Grade 1 scores when Rockemperor captured the $500,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic on October 9 and Jack Christopher won the $500,000 Champagne on October 2. Brown also sent out Public Sector [Grade 2 Hill Prince], Fluffy Socks [Grade 2 Sands Point], Royal Flag [Grade 2 Beldame], My Sister Nat, [Grade 3 Fasig-Tipton Waya] Pocket Square [Grade 3 Athenia] and Sacred Life (Grade 3 Knickerbocker) to graded stakes victories. Shantisara won the $700,000 Jockey Club Oaks Invitational.

“I have to just thank my team, my owners and the horses,” Brown said. “Those are the three real key parts to the whole success and I'm very fortunate in all three areas to have the best. I have great horses to work with and terrific owners and a really super talented team and they deserve all the credit.”

Entering Closing Day, a three-way tie for the riding crown set up an exciting slate, with Ortiz, Jr., Luis Saez and Jose Ortiz all tied with 30 wins. But Ortiz, Jr. won three races, guiding Carom to a victory in Race 3, leading the Brown-trained Orglandes to victory in the $150,000 Zagora in Race 4 and winning aboard Big Package in an allowance optional claiming race in Race 8 that proved to the be the difference in the standings.

The 29-year-old Ortiz, Jr. finished with a 33-35-28 record in 177 mounts with earnings of $3.56 million. His brother, Jose Ortiz, challenged him for supremacy up until the final race, finishing second with 32 wins while Saez, who won aboard Rockefeller in the Grade 3, $150,000 Nashua in Race 9, was third with 31 wins.

“It feels great and it's always special every time I win a title in New York,” Ortiz, Jr. said. “This is my hometown. I'm happy, I thank my owners, trainers, my agent for doing a great job and I'm also thankful to stay healthy.”

Ortiz, Jr. was aboard for Brown-trained winners Public Sector and Pocket Square and also racked up wins with Annapolis [Grade 2 Pilgrim], Life Is Good [Grade 2 Kelso], Bubble Rock [Grade 3 Matron] and Arrest Me Red [Grade 3 Belmont Turf Sprint Invitational].

“We always compete no matter what,” Ortiz, Jr. said. “We try to do our best out there so thankfully it paid off with hard work and dedication.”
