Group 1 sire Lawman (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) has been transferred to Haras du Mazet for the 2024 breeding season, Jour de Galop reported on Thursday. His fee will be €4,000.

A winner of both the G1 Prix du Jockey Club and the G1 Prix Jean Prat in 2007, the 19-year-old has sired 38 stakes winners. Of his 22 group winners, six have scored at the highest level, including Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Just The Judge (Ire), 2020 Cartier Champion 2-Year-Old Filly Pretty Gorgeous (Fr), Most Improved (Ire), Law Enforcement (Ire), St Leger victor Harbour Law (GB) and Marcel (Ire).

After beginning his career at Ballylinch Stud in Ireland in 2008, the half-brother of G1 Prix de Diane heroine Latice (Ire) (Inchinor {GB}) switched to Haras de Grandcamp for the 2019 breeding season, where he stood through 2022. This year, he covered mares at Karwin Farm for €6,000.

On the back of the eagerly anticipated stallion fee announcements in Europe, Emma Berry spoke with a number of leading industry figures about value. Today we hear from Hubert Honoré.

EB: Who have you identified as a first-year stallion at an appealing opening fee?

HH: Sottsass (Fr), at €30,000, is very good value for what he’s done; he was a very consistent horse. Also Wooded (Ire) was a good sprinter who was very well trained and he will get a good chance. He’s not too dear at €15,000.

EB: Best value proven stallion, and why?

HH: I am a fan of Make Believe (GB). I also think Mehmas (Ire) is good value, even though he’s now standing for three times more than he was. I think he will be a hell of a horse. In the U.S., I would also mention Summer Front, a son of War Front, who gets a lot of winners for the mares he has covered.

EB: Who would you consider to be an under-the-radar stallion?

HH: Here I would name two horses who have come to France who have been elsewhere before. Dream Ahead is not a commercial stallion but he is a very consistent stallion and I like him a lot. Lawman (Fr) is also still a very interesting horse who has been quite overlooked lately. On a much smaller scale, I would also say that Stormy River (Fr) has always been a good stallion who is underrated. It is hard for a horse if he isn’t getting the best mares. In this business a horse has to be good in the first two years otherwise he gets rejected.

Friday’s G1 bet365 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket was fought out by two elite TDN Rising Stars, with Pretty Gorgeous (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}) prevailing by half a length over Indigo Girl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) to claim the bragging rights. Runner-up in the Sept. 13 G1 Moyglare Stud S. at The Curragh, John Oxley’s Pretty Gorgeous had been forced to miss Sunday’s G1 Prix Marcel Boussac due to the well-documented feed contamination but confidence remained intact as she traded as the 5-2 favourite. Racing well off the honest tempo as Shane Crosse played the waiting game, the bay who had earlier won the G2 Debutante S. cruised into contention two out and was in front soon after chased by a Ballydoyle runner which was at the time believed to be the 50-1 shot Snowfall (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). Able to see off that Rosegreen representative with relative comfort, she was beyond reach as George Strawbridge’s G2 May Hill S. winner Indigo Girl closed late on. It later transpired that the eventual third, who was the same margin behind, was in fact Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and not Snowfall with the number cloths having been mixed up. “Early on, I wasn’t overly happy and she’s so big she didn’t come down the hill all that great but once I got her balanced and rolling in the last half-furlong it was a case of me getting there too soon,” commented Crosse, who had missed out on G1 St Leger glory last month after a positive COVID-19 test.

Pretty Gorgeous was a rare Rising Star to run at the low-key Irish venue of Bellewstown, but the promise of her five-length defeat of the useful Talacre (Flintshire {GB}) over this trip was there for all to see July 2. Runner-up to Donnacha’s Shale (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G3 Silver Flash S. over the first of three seven-furlong outings when the going was lively at Leopardstown Aug. 6, she turned that form around with ease in the ground when scoring by 2 1/2 lengths in the Debutante at The Curragh Aug. 22 before again coming off second-best to Shale in the Moyglare. “She was very impressive and I’m delighted for everybody at home, for Mr Oxley who was keen to come here and for Justin who bought her,” trainer Joseph O’Brien said. “I thought Shane gave the filly a great ride. He was patient on her and committed when he had to. Shane is a young man, but he is a very good rider–strong and cool in a finish and he doesn’t panic.”

“I was a little bit worried coming here, given that she’d been to France but she was very fresh and in great shape so we thought we’d better take our chance,” he added. “From the first day she worked, she was impressive at home and proved today that she is top-class. The Breeders’ Cup is an option, but it’s more likely she’ll be put away now and trained for a Guineas next Spring. She is a Lawman, so she would not be bred to go very far. I think Lawman’s can get 10 furlongs and I see her more as an eight to 10-furlong filly rather than an Oaks-type filly at this stage.”

John Gosden said of the runner-up, “It was a great run and I’m very happy with her. Her mother won the French St Leger and her sister won a group one over a mile and a half. She will be trained more for a mile and a quarter and middle-distance races. She won’t be trained as a Guineas filly.”

Aidan O’Brien explained the mix-up with his fillies later in the afternoon, telling the Racing Post, “I didn’t see the race live and when I looked at the replay after it was brought to my attention, I could see straight away. I contacted the BHA straight away and let them know what is after happening. We have a team based in England these days because of the coronavirus restrictions, so the problem is the lads that are with the horses at home can’t always go racing with them. I don’t know what to say other than I am so sorry that it happened.”

Pedigree Notes:
Pretty Gorgeous’s listed-placed dam Lady Gorgeous (GB) (Compton Place {GB}), who also produced the Listed Prix Nureyev scorer Alwaab (Fr) (Toronado {Ire}), is kin to the G3 Prix Fille de l’Air third Kartica (GB) (Rainbow Quest) who is in turn the dam of the G1 Coronation S., G1 Prix Rothschild and G2 Duke of Cambridge S. heroine Qemah (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). The listed-winning second dam Cayman Sunset (Ire) (Night Shift), who was also placed in the GII Canadian H. and GIII All Along Breeders’ Cup S., is from the family of the GII Lexington S. and GIII Everglades H. winner Royal Roberto (Roberto). Lady Gorgeous’s colt by Shalaa (Ire) was purchased by Peter and Ross Doyle Bloodstock for 90,000gns at last year’s Tattersalls December Foal Sale and heads back to that venue to come under the hammer during Tuesday’s session of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2.

Saturday’s G2 A.R.M. Holding Debutante S. resulted in the trifecta of Joseph-Donnacha-Aidan O’Brien in that order as the oldest son of the Ballydoyle master held sway with TDN Rising Star Pretty Gorgeous (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}). Runner-up to Donnacha’s Shale (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G3 Silver Flash S. over this seven-furlong trip on fast ground at Leopardstown Aug. 6, John Oxley’s 3-1 shot was always travelling easily in a share of fourth and when sent on by Shane Crosse brushed aside that rival to gain the lead with a furlong remaining. Hitting the line strong, she had 2 1/2 lengths to spare over the 7-4 favourite, with the same margin back to Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) who fared best of the Ballydoyle runners. “She’s a very good filly,” Joseph commented. “We were a bit worried about the ground today, but she obviously handled it. Being by Lawman, we thought that gave her a chance. We felt that she’d definitely get closer to Donnacha’s filly after her run in Leopardstown, as we thought the Curragh would be more suitable for us.”

Introduced over a mile at Bellewstown July 2, Pretty Gorgeous lived up to her title with a Rising Star-earning five-length defeat of the useful Talacre (Flintshire {GB}) and may have been racing against the bias when failing to claw back Shale in the Silver Flash. “We were looking for an easy spot for her debut first time at Bellewstown and she qualified for that race, but as it turned out it actually was quite a good race,” her trainer added. “The [G1] Moyglare [Stud S.] looks the logical next step. She has proven that she’s versatile ground-wise. I thought Shane gave her a lovely cool ride today, it was a lovely confident ride. She’s a big strong lady. She cost a good few quid as a yearling, but she was an outstanding physical specimen at the sales. The sky is the limit for her.”

Pretty Gorgeous is the second black-type winner for Lady Gorgeous (GB) (Compton Place {GB}) after the Listed Prix Nureyev scorer Alwaab (Fr) (Toronado {Ire}).

It is not often that Bellewstown witnesses a performance with Classic potential, but on Thursday the tricky Co. Meath circuit played host to an exciting 2-year-old filly as John Oxley’s Pretty Gorgeous (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}) earned TDN Rising Star status in the Irish EBF Median Sires Fillies Maiden over just short of a mile. Always travelling with ease tracking the leading pair against the rail, the 525,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 purchase who is a relative of the G1 Coronation S. winner Qemah (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) was left in front as the leader Chummie (Ire) (Equiano {Fr}) ran off the bend approaching the three-furlong marker. Soon clear, the 2-1 second favourite was being eased as she recorded a five-length defeat of Juddmonte’s Talacre (Flintshire {GB}), the half-sister to Siskin (First Defence). Jessie Harrington’s Anna Strada (GB) (Havana Gold {Ire}) was another 1 3/4 lengths away in third.

Trainer Joseph O’Brien’s assistant Brendan Powell said of the G1 Moyglare Stud S. entry. “She’s a big filly. Shane [Crosse] said she jumped well out of the gates and travelled lovely. She wasn’t worried about the other horse running out in front of her, he said it left her there but she was lovely and balanced and did it easily in the end. You don’t know how good the race is. but you couldn’t have asked for any more than she’s done. A big galloping track would be more to her liking but she’d coped with that well and please God she has a good future. For a filly first time out to be in front a long way out like that there is a lot to look at. She’ll be pretty useful hopefully.”

Pretty Gorgeous is the fourth foal out of the Listed Surrey S. third Lady Gorgeous (GB) (Compton Place {GB}), who raced in the Jaber Abdullah silks and was purchased by Margaret O’Toole for just €40,000 at the 2018 Arqana December Sale. At the same auction, she also bought this filly as a foal for €55,000 and those investments looked unerring astute after Lady Gorgeous’s Andre Fabre-trained colt Alwaab (Fr) (Toronado {Ire}) took last year’s Listed Prix Nureyev. Pretty Gorgeous was offered at Book 1 and her price shot up to 525,000gns with Joseph O’Brien her biggest fan.

The second dam Cayman Sunset (Ire) (Night Shift) was successful in the Listed Dahlia S. in England and placed in the GII Canadian H. and GIII All Along Breeders’ Cup S. Her daughter Kartica (GB) (Rainbow Quest) was third in the G3 Prix Fille de l’Air prior to producing the aforementioned Qemah who also captured the G1 Prix Rothschild and G2 Duke of Cambridge S. as well as enjoying her finest hour in the Coronation. Lady Gorgeous’s yearling colt by Shalaa (Ire) was snapped up by Peter and Ross Doyle Bloodstock for 90,000gns at last year’s Tattersalls December Foal Sale.

TALACRE (Flintshire {GB}) is a piece of equine royalty set to visit the small Co. Meath circuit, being a half-sister to the G1 Phoenix S. and G1 Irish 2000 Guineas hero Siskin (First Defence). Bidding to provide Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms’ freshman sire with his first European winner, the Juddmonte homebred is pitched in by Siskin’s trainer Ger Lyons against John Oxley’s 525,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 purchase Pretty Gorgeous (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}), a Joseph O’Brien-trained relative of the G1 Coronation S. winner Qemah (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}).
DARK LION (IRE) (Dark Angel {Ire}) comes back 12 days after a big effort at Royal Ascot, where he was just over three-lengths fourth in the G2 Coventry S. There will be disappointment in the Roger Varian yard if Shaikh Nasser Al Khalifa’s colour-bearer, a relative of Giofra (GB) (Dansili {GB}), is unable to deal with five rivals which include Godolphin’s Newmarket maiden sixth Future Vision (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}), a half-brother to Teofilo (Ire) who represents the Saeed bin Suroor stable.
