The Legends Series brings together horseracing and bourbon enthusiasts for an exclusive lineup of five tastings, and is considered a highlight on the Museum's annual calendar. Tickets for the event, held Mar. 27 from 5-8:00 p.m., are available for purchase. Mine That Bird will be at the Museum through mid-April.

“We are thrilled to bring Mine That Bird to the Museum's Stable for this extraordinary Legends event,” said owner Mark Allen. “It's a unique opportunity for fans to get close to a living legend and explore the captivating history of long shots in the Kentucky Derby.”

Other highlights include dinner on the newly renovated Oaks Terrace, a sneak peek at the brand new Long Shots display before it opens to the public, and the opportunity to purchase bottles of the limited supply of the Museum's Private Barrel Selection. There will be a live auction for a prize package that includes several rare memorabilia items from Derby-winning long shots, and the funds raised will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Museum.

The Kentucky Derby Museum has named Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas as the inaugural recipient of the Kentucky Derby Museum's Lifetime Achievement Award. With Lukas in attendance at the Derby 150 Birthday Tribute Dinner, scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, Apr. 11 at the Kentucky Derby Museum.

Lukas has achieved remarkable success, including four GI Kentucky Derby victories. His unparalleled dedication to the sport and influence on countless individuals in the racing community make him a deserving recipient of the Museum's first award.

In response to the announcement, Lukas shared his appreciation, saying, “I am deeply honored to receive the Kentucky Derby Museum Lifetime Achievement Award. Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of working with incredible horses and talented individuals. Looking back, I get the greatest satisfaction from seeing the young people, who have been with me through thick and thin, come through our program and achieve their own great successes. The museum originally built the 'Riders Up!' exhibit in 2000 as a way to immerse visitors in the Derby and race day experience from the viewpoint of a jockey and Thoroughbred racehorse. The game was last updated in 2010 during a previous museum expansion project. With significant changes in virtual and augmented reality since then, the new version will look to captivate visitors with state-of-the-art technology designed to bring the thrill of horse racing into the 21st century.

“This exhibit has been a fan favorite for guests of all ages ever since the original debuted in 2000,” said Chris Goodlett, Kentucky Derby Museum Senior Director of Curatorial and Educational Affairs. “With 'Riders Up!,' we're not just entertaining; we're bringing the Derby's rich history to life. This exhibit drives home our mission of engaging everyone with the excitement of Derby every single day.”

Involved in the exhibit upgrade are Catalyst, an Australian-based production studio dedicated to virtual and augmented reality, and The Laboratory Creative, a design company based in Southern Indiana.

The HAWA Grand Prize is awarded to the artist whose work best captures the spirit of the Kentucky Derby. Churchill Downs Racetrack President, Mike Anderson, said Seckman's piece embodied the emotion of Derby.

“For 149 years, it's been about the horse. And for Derby 150, this portrait of the horse in front of the Twin Spires captures the very spirit of the Kentucky Derby,” said Anderson.

The winning artwork will be professionally framed and put on display in the Museum for the next year. Seckman also received a Spring Race Day Experience prize package sponsored by Churchill Downs, and the Museum awarded Atherton High School's art department with a $500 prize for art supplies.

Outgoing board members Brandy Harmon, Michael Judah, and Loren Hebel-Osborne were honored during the meeting for completing their terms of service. The late Clinton Glasscock was also recognized for his 12 years of service to the board.

A new board chair was unanimously approved. The board's vice chair, David Nett, was then selected to replace outgoing chair Glenn Haygood. Haygood served two years in that position and is now Immediate past chair.

“I'm pleased to see the incredible success that is a result of the board's collaboration and partnership with the Kentucky Derby Museum over the years,” said Haygood. “The Museum is on track to hit record attendance for 2023, and that momentum will only continue through what is expected to be an epic Derby 150.”
