Held up last of the quintet early by a confident William Buick, the 4-7 favourite was slipped through the gaps to overwhelm Ralph Beckett's Derby entry Valvano (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) inside the final furlong and surge to a two-length success. The Hannon runner Persica (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) was a further half a length away in third.
“Today was a warm race with a few unexposed types and he gave away weight to all of them, so I'm delighted,” Buick said after the Virgin Bet Best Odds Daily British EBF Conditions S., which formerly carried listed status when known as the Easter. “I was very pleased with how he has done physically since the last time I rode him–he has really filled out and I feel like he has grown a bit as well, which is always nice to see from a horse who has had two runs. I couldn't be more happy with him and I tested him a little bit today and he quickened up in a stride.”
Charlie Appleby has entered the son of the G3 UAE Oaks runner-up Swift Rose, who beat the subsequent listed scorer Cuban Tiger (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) in the European Road To The Kentucky Derby Conditions S. here in February, in the 2000 Guineas and Buick was not ruling that out as a valid objective. “I just had to pick a path and he's such a genuine, easy horse to deal with,” he added. “He's got a bright future ahead of him. It's so wet, so it was a nice opportunity for him to come here and run again on this surface. I think he would handle a little bit of cut in the ground, but he's a very fast horse with a low action, so I think he would want a bit of decent ground. He's opened up a few options there, but he's a speedy miler.”

The post Roaring Lion’s Lion’s Pride A New TDN Rising Star first appeared on Horse Racing Free Tips.]]> Almost a year on from the portentous debut win of Courage Mon Ami (GB) (Frankel {GB}) at Kempton, that recently-crowned king of the staying division's more fleet-footed half-brother Lion's Pride (GB) (Roaring Lion–Crimson Ribbon, by Lemon Drop Kid) surged to TDN Rising Star status at the same venue on Wednesday evening. Having been a highly promising runner-up on debut over 10 furlongs at Newcastle in May, Anthony Oppenheimer's homebred was partnered by Robert Havlin who had also been aboard his illustrious G1 Gold Cup-winning half-sibling in that eye-catching win 10 months earlier.

Racing in the catbird seat off the slow early tempo, the 4-7 favourite showed sharp acceleration to pounce on inferior rivals two out and settle the result quickly before drawing away for a resounding three-length success from stablemate Middle Earth (GB) (Roaring Lion). Lion's Pride, who hails from the same Clarehaven stable as Courage Mon Ami, becomes just the second TDN Rising Star for his sire after the ultimately disappointing Lion Of War (GB).

“He's always been quite a big baby and he learned plenty at Newcastle,” Havlin said. “He has a big action, so we avoided quick ground and I was impressed with the way he quickened from the two-and-a-half to the one-and-a-half today. Courage Mon Ami did everything wrong when he won here and was a work in progress and this guy is the same–he will learn and he was a different horse to the last day, so I'm sure he'll be a different horse again next time. He's got good attributes–he relaxes, has a good turn of foot and stays.”

Alongside Courage Mon Ami, Crimson Ribbon is also responsible for the Listed Chalice S. winner and G3 Pinnacle S. and G3 Princess Royal S. runner-up Crimson Rosette (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), the Listed Girvan Waugh Randwick City S. winner and G3 Neville Sellwood S. runner-up Astronomos (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) and for Purple Ribbon (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}), who was second in this track's Listed Wild Flower S. Sent off the 8-13 favourite for the John and Thady Gosden stable, the daughter of the G1 Pretty Polly S. heroine Promising Lead was prominent early with Ryan Moore happy to accept a lead. Sent to the front passing the two-furlong pole, the bay drew away with her familiar rapid late splits to register a 3 1/2-length verdict over Lightship (Ire) (Fascinating Rock {Ire}) that had group 1 winner written all over it.

John Gosden was happy to take in Ryan Moore's invaluable feedback afterwards and said, “Ryan was very happy with her and he likes her a lot. He has given me two options, so I'll be scratching my head but I'm clear with what I'm doing with the first one. The [G2] Duke Of Cambridge [at Royal Ascot] is an obvious target, but talking to Ryan it is what we do between then and now. If it was fast ground at Newmarket [for the May 7 G2 Dahlia Stakes], he was steering me elsewhere which is very good advice. Thady has mentioned a race in Ireland [the G2 Ridgewood Pearl Stakes], so that is a possibility.”

“The filly was incredibly immature and weak as a two-year-old and looked slow, but we haven't rushed her and she has come through and rewarded everyone. Her immaturity probably cost her the Sun Chariot and I think not knowing much about it as well, as she hit the front and wandered about a bit. She is learning all the time. Her mother has not had a lot of luck as a broodmare but this filly has turned it around.”

Promising Lead similarly came to the boil in the autumn of her 3-year-old campaign, finishing second in the G1 Prix de l'Opera before taking the G3 Middleton S. and G1 Pretty Polly S. on her only two starts at four. Her first seven foals, by mainly dirt sires, yielded six winners but none at black-type level although her daughters Surcingle (Empire Maker) and Lupin (Medaglia D'Oro) were in turn responsible for the GIII Berkeley H.-placed Sash (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and G3 Tokinominoru Kinen winner Phantom Thief (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}) respectively.

Confidently supported as the 11-10 favourite for the five-furlong Racing TV/EBF Restricted Novice S., the bay was quickly into stride to track the leader closely under Hollie Doyle and when committed two out stayed on strongly to score by 1 1/4 lengths from Ponga (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}).

“He is naturally very speedy and he is a laid-back type,” his jockey commented. “He is a lovely rangy colt. We usually send a few early types out, but he has a bit of scope. We are renowned for training them to know their jobs and be quick, but this is actually quite a talented horse and it has all come very naturally to him. He was just having a look around in front and he took the bend quite awkward. I'd say when we get him on the grass he will be even better.”

The dam is an unraced full-sister to the listed-winning sprinter Excelette (Ire), who is in turn responsible for the Listed Roses S. and Listed Dragon S. scorer and G2 Flying Childers S. and G3 Cornwallis S. runner-up Well Done Fox (GB) (Acclamation {GB}). Also a half to the dual group-placed Rapid Applause (GB) (Royal Applause {GB}) and to the dam of the G2 Gimcrack S. runner-up Devilwala (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) from the family of the G2 Kings Stand S. and G2 Temple S. winner Bolshoi (Ire) (Royal Academy), her yearling colt is by Ghaiyyath (Ire).
