Trainer Todd Pletcher offers up a pair of seven-figure sales horses making their belated debuts. Victorious Racing LLC's SWORDOFHONOR (IRE) (Siyouni {Fr}) sports some pretty flashy credentials. The €1.5 million Arqana August yearling purchase is a half-brother to the year-older Angel Bleu (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}), a two-time Group 1 winner as a juvenile who subsequently won last summer's G2 Celebration Mile S. at Goodwood. Consigned by Ecurie des Monceaux and purchased by Oliver St Lawrence, the bay was the second highest-priced yearling and the top-priced colt of the 2021 Arqana August Yearling Sale. His family also includes Group 1 scorers Elvstroem (Aus) and Haradasun (Aus). The son of Cercle de La Vie (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), sister to Group 1 winners Highland Reel and Cape of Good Hope, posted a pair of bullet works–including the most recent a 1:01 (1/5) move Feb. 8–at Pletcher's Palm Beach Downs base.

Also representing the Hall of Famer is Repole Stable and St Elias Stable's STORM READY (City of Light), a $1.05 million Keeneland September buy. The half to GSW Biddy Duke (Bayern) posted his latest breeze at Palm Beach Downs Jan. 31, covering five panels in 1:00 3/5 (1/2). The colts will be partnered by the Ortiz brothers, the former by Jose and the latter by Irad. TJCIS PPS

Sporting the distinctive gold square on the front and back of Luis Saez's silks, it was first time starter Amor Fati (Liam's Map) who loved the lead and never relinquished it en route to becoming a 'TDN Rising Star' at Gulfstream Park on Sunday afternoon.

The $375,000 Keeneland September grad posted a number of sharp works for trainer Brittany Russell over the past two months at her Palm Meadows base. Debuting as the 2-1 favorite here, the gray rocketed to the lead up the backstretch. Setting a strong pace up front with a quarter-mile of :21.43, the 3-year-old continued to hold sway around the far turn and she opened up down the lane to win by 5 1/2 lengths over Tinki Abarrio (Runhappy).

The winner is a half-sister to Accretive (Practical Joke), MGSP, $323,393. Mallory Street was purchased during the 2020 Keeneland November Sale by Hidden Brook for $100,000 with Amor Fati in-utero. She was her final offspring before passing away in 2022.

Whisper Hill homebred TAP MY BELLE (Tapit) makes her first start for trainer Ralph Nicks.

The gray is out GI Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic heroine Unrivaled Belle (Unbridled's Song), who was bred and raced by Gary Seidler and Peter Vegso. Initially, she was purchased by Brushwood Stable for $2.8 million as the fourth highest price at the 2011 Keeneland November Sale.

Five years later at the same auction, Whisper Hill made the mare the sales topper when Mandy Pope took her home for $3.8 million, while Tap My Belle's older full-sister, Unrivaled Princess, was in-utero.

Of course, Unrivaled Belle's most famous produce to date is also another full-sister to this Gulfstream first-time starter–two-time Eclipse Award recipient Unique Bella. Winner of the GI Beholder Mile and GI La Brea S., the champion was purchased for $400,000 by Don Alberto at the 2015 Keeneland September Sale.

Unrivaled Belle claims a 2-year-old colt and a yearling one of the same sex, while Unique Bella–herself a dam–also has a 2-year-old colt and she foaled a filly last year. All four offspring are by multiple leading sire Into Mischief.

Tap My Belle's second dam, MGSW Queenie Belle (Bertrando), is also responsible for the dam of GIII Gotham S. victor Raise Cain (Violence). TJCIS PPS

WEATHER DELAY (Curlin), the first foal out of MGISW American Gal (Concord Point), kicks off her career for Repole Stable and trainer Todd Pletcher. The 3-year-old was a $500,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase. Carrying the colors of Kaleem Shah, American Gal captured the 2017 GI Longines Test S. at Saratoga and the following term's GI Humana Distaff S. at Churchill Downs. She was also third as the favorite in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. American Gal brought $3 million from Weather Delay's breeder Whisper Hill Farm at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton November sale. Her 2-year-old colt by Into Mischief brought $1.1 million from Grandview Equine at last year's Keeneland September sale. TJCIS PPs

The most memorable moment of 2023 was our Keeneland September yearling class assembling at the sale. I always look forward to that two-week stretch and the excitement surrounding all the new horses we bring into the stable. Twice this year, I thought we were finished buying…once after picking up the Caracaro filly and again after we bought the War of Will filly we were (and still are) thrilled with. Then, on the last weekend of the sale, Marc [Wampler] calls me and says “Well, I bought another one.” We ended up with six yearlings and I couldn't be happier with any of them, especially the surprise Temple City filly.

WITHOUT CAUSE (Omaha Beach) tackles two turns over the turf in this debut run. Dam Without (Tiznow), out of MGSW Mary's Follies (More Than Ready), is a half-sister to GIII Transylvania S. victor Night Prowler (Giant's Causeway), champion female turf horse Regal Glory (Animal Kingdom) and Japanese champion dirt horse Cafe Pharoah (American Pharoah). Trained by Mark Casse, the $180,000 Keeneland September Yearling sale graduate will have Adam Beschizza in the saddle.

Also out for her first test is Bridewood Farm homebred Moshine (Uncle Mo), a Brendan Walsh trainee slated to be ridden by Declan Cannon. The bay filly is out of GI Chandelier S. heroine Moonshine Memories (Malibu Moon)–a half to the dam of MGSW Souper Hoity Toity (Uncle Mo)–who was purchased for $3.4 million by West Bloodstock in foal to Into Mischief at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton Fall Mixed Sale. The resulting filly went for $475,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale to North Hills Co. Moshine hails from an extended female family under her third dam which includes Horse of the Year Favorite Trick (Phone Trick) and his half-sister's MGSW son, Favorite Tale (Tale of the Cat). TJCIS PPS

A colt by Practical Joke led the way Wednesday, kicking off Book 5 of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in Lexington. Consigned by Bluewater Sales, Hip 2980 is out of Jetbird (Wildcat Heir), a half-sister to Group 1 winner X Y Jet (Kantharos).

“We were prepared [for the $250,000 price] because of the entire package,” said CJ Thoroughbred's Corey Johnson. “We felt between $200,000-$250,000 was what it was going to take to purchase him. We were expecting somewhere around that number.”

On Day 9, Ashford's Practical Joke was the second leading sire of the session, grossing $565,000 for five yearlings sold, with an average of $113,000. The leading sire of the session, Frosted, drew an aggregate of $617,000 for 11 sold, averaging $56,091.

“[Bloodstock advisor] Marette Farrell selected the horse for his fabulous physical and the potential there. We also believe that Practical Joke brings brilliance to the equation as an emerging top sire,” said Johnson. “Basically, we had a colt that was a really promising physical and by a brilliant sire that brings toughness to the equation.”

Johnson also pointed a little bit farther back on the page, with the appearance of several Argentine performers, including GSP Argentine mare Tripulina (Sings), a sister to Argentine GSW and GISP Tizna.

“I've also spent quite a bit of time in Argentina and watched that industry very closely and what I find is, those families bring soundness and durability to the pedigree,” he explained.

In foal to Bolt d'Oro, 13-year-old Jetbird realized $20,000 at Fasig-Tipton in February, while this May foal brought $27,000 as a short yearling from DKW Racing.

“Today, this was the only horse we were on,” Johnson affirmed. “I thought he is a physical with, just a little bit of vision, you could see where this would turn into a stunning racehorse. He may be just a touch immature but someone like Marette, who has done this for a long time, can see that blue sky ahead with these young horses. We may have gotten really lucky to find this kind of colt in Book 5.”

Through nine sessions, CJ Thoroughbreds, alone or in partnership, collected nine yearlings for a gross of $2.1 million. The operation's top priced purchase was a colt by Not This Time (Hip 594), who realized $535,000.

When asked about the market thus far, Johnson offered, “I think the sale has been really strong. I can't remember a Book 5 with that many people looking. The place was packed with quality buyers. I still see a lot of enthusiasm.”

Indicating that he was likely done on the buying side of things, Johnson said he would now put on his seller's cap for Thursday's session, offering Hip 3485, filly by Spun to Run, who is represented by his first yearlings in 2023. Out of Northern Netti (City Zip), the Feb. 19 foal is a half-sister to SW North County (Not This Time). She is consigned by agent Four Star Sales.

“We sell a horse [Thursday] and she had almost 30 looks today,” said Johnson, underscoring the strength of the current buying bench at Keeneland. “That is really a good sign. I'm very positive about the overall market. At times, it's been difficult to buy a good horse within our budget. But that's why you just have to work hard, have a great bloodstock advisor and hope some things fall your way.”

At the conclusion of Thursday session, gross figures for the first nine days came in at $379,373,200, dipping slightly from last year's blockbuster renewal which generated $389,605,000 over the same time frame. During Wednesday's session, 298 yearlings sold for $13,430,200, up 3.56% from 2022 when 329 sold for $12,969,000.

Both the session ($45,068; +14%) and cumulative ($180,396; 0.94%) averages rose, while cumulative median remained unchanged at $100,000 from last year's sale. This year's median of $33,500 was also up from $30,000 in 2022. From last year's corresponding day, RNAs rose to 60 (+66.67%) for Wednesday's session, up from 36 one year ago.

The 10th session of the sale resumes at 10 a.m. Thursday and runs through Saturday.
